The Choices They Didn’t Have Chapter 1: The Letter

How does someone go back to life after fighting in a war since you were 11? How can you just go about life when everyone stops and asks for the autograph of the war heroine? You can’t. Life will never be the same, you’ll never be able to truly move on from your past if everyone insists and keeps you there. Hermione, however, did not know just how much her life was going to change.

A letter had arrived at her house just a week earlier inviting her back to Hogwarts in place of her eventful seventh year. She of course was excited but there was something cryptic about the letter. It was not only signed by Headmistress McGonagall but also by Kingsley, who had just been appointed Minister of magic at the end of the war. Not only that but their list of materials was shorter than it had ever been with a note saying that the rest of their materials for new classes would be provided for them.

Hermione tried not to think much of it but it remained at the back of her mind while she packed. She was planning on spending the week before with the Weasleys and Harry. Her parent’s had the memories back and they understood Hermione’s actions, but she felt as though a rift had been torn that she won’t be able to fully repair. Her parents had remained in Australia after being found because even if their life there had been built on false memories, it was still a peaceful one. Hermione of course understood and felt that everyone had the right to live their lives happy, in whatever way that meant for them. She would visit them weekly, apparating there, but she decided to remain in her childhood home. It had been lonely there over the summer but she had so many fond memories of the place and she didn’t see herself moving out any time soon.

She wasn’t completely alone, Ginny would spend the night at least twice a week telling Hermione that she deserved some girl time after what she went through. Harry and Ron often came over for a visit but those were always so awkward. Ron and Hermione had an odd dynamic going on ever since their kiss in the chamber. They had some shared looks and some hand brushes here and there, but neither of them ever directly brought it up. Harry of course was oblivious and never left them alone to talk. Ginny tried her best to help Hermione but then again she felt that Ron wasn’t good enough for her best friend.

Molly would always invite Hermione over for dinners. So many in fact that eventually Hermione had to start declining some because she was spending so much time out of her house that she barely got any reading or remodeling done. This didn’t stop the motherly figure from inviting her or sending her meals on the daily through the owl post.

Hermione was pulled from her thoughts as an owl interrupted her packing and daydreaming. Hermione rose to find McGonagall’s owl pecking at her window. She opened it and in flew the majestic bird made up of similar colors of Minerva’s animagus form.

“Hello Freya, what have you got for me?” Hermione stroked the bird's feathers as she untied the scroll from her foot. “Here you go have some food before flying back,” she gave the owl some pellets before opening her letter. She began reading the letter,

‘ Dear Hermione,

I have been told not to share this information with anyone as it is confidential. I feel that I must, however, share it with someone. I must give you only small amounts of information and I have chosen you because I know you will be able to figure it out. I just want to provide you with warning for what is to come. I fear that nothing can be done to stop it as I have already tried my hardest. An unjust law has been passed by the wizzingmont that will affect the young generation greatly, in a way that I believe is unjust. This law has never been enacted before, but it has existed since the beginning of our government. It was written as a failsafe, only to be used in the most extreme cases of population loss. The ministry feels as though the war was enough of an excuse to call it into action. I can’t say much more but I hope it all turns out well. I am sorry about this Hermione. I hoped that after all you children have been through, you may be able to have a chance at making your own happiness in our world but that is being taken from your grasp. I have tried everything I can but I haven’t been successful, I do want you to know that I have been fighting for you. I will see you in a week when you arrive, much will be revealed at the feast and I hope some brings happy news.

The letter left Hermione worried and confused. She didn’t know what law McGonagall spoke of but she could tell it was troubling. She had to leave for the Weasleys and was hoping that Percy and Arthur may have some more information from inside the ministry. She used to pride herself on her know it all brain as many would refer to her, but now she felt as though she knew nothing. This was perturbing to her. She didn’t know what exactly was coming but she thought that it may be even more frightening than Voldemort himself was.

A/N Hello and welcome back to the new and improved the choices they didn’t have. I hope you enjoy the new first chapter. As I’m sure you can tell, there are quite a few differences from the original story I wrote. Hermione is no longer a Zabini, I just didn’t really like that trope and it felt a little cringey to me. This is still a Dramione marriage law fanfic though. I hope that you’ll still enjoy it even if it is not the story you originally began to read. A few things that differ from canon ,(because it’s my story and JK Rowling is the worst), Fred is alive as is Dobby. There may be more characters that died or it was implied that they died, that I have in my story. There will also be gay couples because I like to erk homophobes. Seamus and Dean will be paired as will Lavender and Pavarti. If you’re homophobic or transphobic gtfo this page I don’t like you. I am planning on keeping up on this story. I am not sure how long it will be. As it is technically enemies to lovers this may be considered slow burn. I am not yet sure if there will be smut or if it is pg 13, maybe I’ll write a spinoff of this where it is just the parts where smut happens but I don’t put it in this story. There will be swearing in this story because I have the language of a northern irish man. Also these kids just went through a war, they’re going to have some choice words about their rights being taken away. At some point I may refer to you lovely readers as little shits, do not take this personally, I refer to people as little shits adoringly all the time.
