actually now that we’re on this does anyone have a solid count of how many times the “person of color is meant to have a foreign accent but then doesn’t... evil is clearly afoot” trope is deployed in tma bc so far i have

1. MAG20: “Father Singh only emigrated from Jaipur a decade or so before I met him, and he had always had quite a strong accent, but the voice that spoke now to read my litany of wrongdoing had no trace of it. It was a clipped and crisp RP accent, though in tone it seemed to match that of my friend.”

2. MAG30: “His name was Tom Haan, and I had never really spoke to him. For the longest time I wasn’t even sure how much English he spoke - he was from China, I think, and hardly ever said a word.... Anyway, it was as I was processing the last of the cows for that day that Tom Haan came over. I didn’t really pay him much attention, but he leaned close, gripped my shoulder and said to me in perfect English, ‘You cannot stop slaughter by closing the door.’”

either way i just think there are better ways to make a situation Eerie than writing a character to be an immigrant for no reason other than to comment on their accent or lack thereof; and that, on the flip-side, you can make a character an immigrant without commenting on their english speaking ability; and that moments like these really make it clear that tma wasn’t written with asian fans in mind
