He's a Phyllocrania Paradoxa- a Ghost Mantis, and I fucking adore him!

He seems very lively, but very okay with being handled. I'm obviously not going to be handling him a lot, but he walked right out onto my hand when I got him from his little travel cup, and he decided he would rather take a drink of a little water drop off my finger than off of his leaf!

I tossed a pair of fruit flies into his enclosure, and he spent about ten minutes stalking one before snatching it up and munching on it. Ate the whole thing really quick- he was hungry! If he doesn't catch the other, I'll make sure he gets another one either today or tomorrow (the other one might have gotten lucky and escaped, not sure, if it did, well, good for it).

i dont think i gave off this impression but i do kinda wanna reiterate something just in case i did: i think alderheart being xenophobic is just as stupid and bad as sparkpelt being xenophobic (in the context of what is there in the narrative). its bad because it goes unexamined and even accepted as right in some instances. this is a problem with the entire series: firestar himself has repeated xenophobic rhetoric, none of my faves either are exempt. this is something that isnt a character-specific issue, its not a glitch, its a feature of these books. so acting like its like a specific flaw exclusive to a few characters is…. kinda meaningless. xenophobia is only bad when the writers want it to be bad in a specific instance. alderheart at the end of the day is another gear in this entire system.

the reason i wanted to linger on it so much though is because its SUCH a common thing to fling against sparkpelt. to show how shes wronged the men people in her life by not liking the group they have deemed exempt from bigotry. like before i read the rest of avos, that was what people talked about with her. not her enthusiasm and kindness from those first three books, her sudden veer into generic background conservative territory that made no sense for her character at the time. and alderpaws xenophobia towards kittypets in book 1, so extreme that he blames skyclans exile on the daylight warriors, so extreme that he feels sick at being near them and berates needlepaw for accepting help from them, that he consistently calls them stupid throughout the book… NONE of that was ever mentioned in any fandom discussion i saw. and i get hes a boring character but i just thought it was interesting. his bigotry is accepted as normal. okay. acceptable. not even worth mentioning. and its arguably more consistent with his character than sparkpelt’s xenophobia was! if alderheart got any mention, its either that hes boring, or if hes liked hes just a sad poor little anxious boy who keeps getting punted around. (which really isnt all that true tbh lol) but sparkpelts xenophobia is a feature. its always mentioned when i see her. its always “oh so you think xenophobia is fine?” when you criticize her unfair writing.

i dunno why one would get this treatment and not the other. its totally lost on me. if only there was a big distinction between alderheart and sparkpelt that made it clear. dunno. guess we’ll never know

#henry got very very mad at sprig the other day #after a lot of trigger stacking #i had been bed bound for 4 days post tonsillectomy #so none of the dogs had had any interaction or exercise #so they were all stressed and restless #i was in bed and heard hollering and screaming #i ran downstairs and by the time i got there the fight was over and no one was injured #i looked back on the camera and hen had been lying down chewing something #moby was being irritating and trying to get it out of his mouth #hen ignored him #then budge came over and tried to retrieve it as well #hen continued munching and didn't even bother correcting them #but then sprig walked over to see what was going on #and stuck his head in hens mouth #hen gave a slight correction #and then sprig in awkward panic made a move to like mount hen?? #and anyway hen just turned around and NAILED him #which was scary because hes never done anything like that before #I'm thinking it's because sprig is entire and also quite a bit larger #and apparently at like 10-12mo their hormones go insane even if they're not acting like jerks?? and it makes neutered males upset? #anyway i'm sure sprig has learnt not to hump hen #but my immediate instinct is to DESEX SPRIG NOW #because all of my dogs have been desexed under a year old #i dont know how to own entire dogs! #but i really really wanna keep spriggy entire until at least 2yrs #anyway Sprig literally just screamed and peed himself which was most of the noise #if needed i'll start separating the old man and the baby regularly so they can have time out from each other #still very good boys #henry #sprig

I'm not sure if this is intentional or a coincidence, but Ao's scarf looks like the black marking around the banded sea krait's neck and face! It fits her either way-- despite their potent venom, these snakes are quite timid and rarely ever bite humans, even when provoked.
