Entrevista al filósofo marxista japonés Kohei Saito. «El decrecimiento debe aprender del comunismo»

Su libro ‘El capital en el Antropoceno’, publicado en Japón en el año 2020, ha cosechado un éxito sin precedentes.

Kohei Saito, un filósofo japonés marxista que se volcó en la ecología a raíz de la catástrofe de Fukushima, ha captado gran atención internacional con su obra sobre el comunismo del decrecimiento. En esta entrevista concedida al Green European Journal, Saito explica qué es lo que el socialismo y el ecologismo pueden aprender el uno del otro y por qué el Japón estancado en lo económico y asolado por una pandemia resultó ser un territorio fértil para las ideas decrecentistas.

El capital en el Antropoceno, publicado en Japón en el año 2020, ha cosechado un éxito sin precedentes. Está previsto que Slow Down: The Degrowth Manifesto se publique en inglés a principios de 2024.

¿Cómo llegaste a interesarte por Marx y después por el comunismo del decrecimiento?

Descubrí las obras de Marx y Engels a los 18, cuando empecé mis estudios en la Universidad de Tokio, a través de grupos de estudiantes que luchaban por proteger a los trabajadores jóvenes. Al principio me interesé más por la explotación de la clase obrera y después cada vez más por la desigualdad en general, a raíz de que la crisis de 2008 agravara la situación en Japón. Marx había advertido precisamente de estos problemas, que no harían sino cobrar mayor importancia en el futuro. Entonces decidí trasladarme a Alemania para seguir estudiando a Marx.

En el año 2011, después del terremoto de Japón y la catástrofe nuclear de Fukushima, me di cuenta de que el capitalismo no se limita únicamente a la explotación de los seres humanos, sino que también engloba esas tecnologías descomunales que han sido creadas en busca de beneficios y que, en última instancia, trajeron consigo un verdadero desastre para la vida de muchas personas en Japón.

Entonces, ¿llegaste al mundo de la ecología a través de la cuestión nuclear en lugar de la climática?

Al principio me mostraba más optimista sobre el desarrollo de la tecnología, pero a raíz de Fukushima empecé a reflexionar sobre la tecnología y el capitalismo y perdí parte de ese optimismo. También empecé a interesarme más por la cuestión del cambio climático en el año 2014, después de haber leído el libro de Naomi Klein Esto lo cambia todo (Paidós, 2015). A pesar de todo, seguía siendo optimista. Pensaba que algunas medidas políticas socialistas, con una mayor planificación y trabajo garantizado, podría lograr la igualdad y, a la vez, una mayor sostenibilidad. Fue entonces cuando empecé a leer más y me tropecé con las obras de Jason Hickel, Giorgos Kallis y el enfoque del decrecimiento en general.

No cabía duda de que había cierta tensión entre Marx y el decrecimiento y en torno a Marx y la crisis climática, así que empecé a leer sus obras más tardías. Llegué a reinterpretar sus ideas, en particular sus estudios sobre las sociedades precapitalistas. Me di cuenta de que Marx se había interesado por esas sociedades precapitalistas porque son Estados esencialmente estables no orientadas hacia el crecimiento. Y, a pesar de ello, consiguieron garantizar la sostenibilidad y la calidad de vida para toda la población. Así es como llegué a la tesis del comunismo del decrecimiento.

¿Cómo compaginas decrecimiento con comunismo? ¿No quiere el comunismo más y el decrecentismo menos?

Esa es la tensión que hay en la tradición marxista y ecologista. La corriente política socialista apuesta por el desarrollo tecnológico para conseguir más para todos: es necesario que haya más desarrollo, más progreso, más eficacia. El ecologismo recalca que existe un consumo excesivo y una sobreproducción, por lo que aboga por una desaceleración a fin de proteger la naturaleza.

No obstante, acabé dándome cuenta de que a Marx le interesaban ambas cuestiones: proteger la vida de todas las personas y proteger la naturaleza. No hace falta tener más en un sentido tan capitalista. Cuando Marx habla de abundancia, no se refiere a que tengamos jets privados o mansiones. Lo que quiere decir es que podríamos vivir de forma abundante, vivir una buena vida, teniendo asistencia médica y transporte universal, con vivienda, agua, electricidad y unos recursos básicos garantizados sin mediación del dinero.

Ese tipo de abundancia puede constituir la nueva base para el socialismo o el comunismo porque está basada en la igualdad. Pero si queremos tener más en el sentido actual de la palabra, el resultado será una catástrofe ecológica. El camino intermedio pasa por redefinir abundancia y, en la línea de Hickel, yo la denomino abundancia radical. Es un tipo de abundancia muy diferente en la que compartimos cosas, nos ayudamos mutuamente y tenemos sensación de seguridad.

Teniendo en cuenta el estado del planeta, ¿es el ecosocialismo productivista plausible? ¿O se debe asumir que el viejo sueño marxista ha llegado a su fin?

Sin el ecologismo, la política socialista gira en torno a la consecución de una mayor igualdad mediante aumento de la producción y del consumo. Pero no todo el mundo puede vivir como Bill Gates, ni como la clase media-alta alemana. No es sostenible. Los socialistas critican el capitalismo, pero a su vez siguen atrapados en los valores capitalistas.

También hay que tener en cuenta que si continuamos consumiendo más energía y recursos continuaremos explotando recursos, energías y mano de obra de los países del sur global. Por lo tanto, si de verdad queremos plantearnos la igualdad y la sostenibilidad a escala planetaria, no basta con basarnos únicamente en la tecnología. Tenemos que pensar también en la forma en que vivimos, en la manera en que producimos las cosas. La política socialista vuelve a ser muy importante en este sentido, porque son precisamente las personas ricas las responsables de esta producción y consumo excesivos. Hay que gravar la riqueza y prohibir bienes como los jets privados, los cruceros y las mansiones descomunales.

Esto nos permitirá reducir la producción y el consumo, pero también disponer de más tiempo libre, aumentar nuestro bienestar y garantizar cierto espacio para el desarrollo del sur global. Una vez hecho esto, debemos plantearnos maneras de reducir nuestro consumo material, sobre todo en los países del norte global. El exceso de confianza en la tecnología nos impide ver que nuestro modo de vida no es sostenible.

Hay quien puede decir: “Yo quiero un entorno saludable y un clima estable, pero no esta agenda ideológica”. ¿Es realmente necesario que el ecologismo sea anticapitalista?

Sí, lo es. Los ecologistas deben ser conscientes de que hay que cuestionar el capitalismo. Hoy en día creer que un impuesto sobre el carbono puede resolver el problema es pecar de optimista. Necesitamos tomar medidas más agresivas, como prohibir las industrias contaminantes y reducir la publicidad. Estas medidas son contrarias a la lógica del capitalismo.

No cabe duda de que necesitamos inversiones cuantiosas en nuevas tecnologías, como las renovables. Ahora bien, en el capitalismo, aunque desarrollemos tecnologías, seguiremos trabajando jornadas muy largas y consumiendo cada vez más.

En el capitalismo, incluso a pesar de que nos permite aumentar eficacia, la tecnología se utiliza con un único fin: producir más y más. Y precisamente es por este mismo motivo por el que también tenemos que trabajar cada vez más para ganar dinero, y vuelta a empezar. A mayor eficiencia, mayor producción y, por tanto, mayor consumo de recursos y energía. Así no podremos resolver la crisis climática. La única manera de lograr una nueva forma de entender la sociedad es aunando estos dos conceptos: el ecologismo o decrecimiento y el socialismo o comunismo.

Fue toda una sorpresa. Marx y el decrecimiento no suelen ser temas muy populares en Japón, pero se vendieron en torno a medio millón de ejemplares. La traducción alemana ya ha estado entre los 10 libros más vendidos en Der Spiegel. Así que algo se cuece. El libro salió a la venta en Japón en plena pandemia. En aquella época tuvimos que ralentizar nuestro estilo de vida. Los restaurantes estaban cerrados, la gente trabajaba desde casa y no salía a la calle. Dedicaban más tiempo a la familia y cocinaban en casa. Redujimos nuestro ritmo de vida y gracias a eso tuvimos tiempo para reflexionar sobre nuestro estilo de vida anterior. ¿Por qué pasábamos más de una hora al día yendo al trabajo? ¿Por qué compramos tanta ropa? Nos dimos cuenta de que ese estilo de vida no nos aportaba ningún tipo de felicidad; simplemente lo hacíamos porque estábamos acostumbrados a ello. Pero podíamos cambiar.

De forma paralela, durante la pandemia hubo personas que pasaron a llamarse “trabajadores esenciales”, personas que estaban expuestas a los riesgos de la Covid19 pero que tenían sueldos muy bajos y jornadas extenuantes. Mientras tanto, las personas que cobran un buen sueldo trabajaban desde casa, con mucha más seguridad. Y durante la pandemia ganaban aún más dinero. Esa desigualdad económica supuso un escándalo social en Japón. Yo hice una crítica de la cuestión desde una postura de izquierdas y la población aceptó que el capitalismo es un problema.

Parece que la economía japonesa está volviendo a los niveles anteriores a la pandemia, pero desde hace décadas se sabe que el país se encuentra ante crecimiento lento y estancamiento de la población. ¿Fue esto parte de su atractivo también?

La recesión y el decrecimiento son dos cosas bien distintas. Lo que Japón vivió en las últimas décadas no es decrecimiento, y la falta de crecimiento sostenido en una sociedad capitalista genera unos problemas enormes. Necesitamos una transición consciente hacia una sociedad poscrecimiento. Los millenials y la generación Z no recuerdan los días de gloria de los años ochenta y no son tan optimistas respecto al progreso futuro de Japón. Así que reivindicamos una nueva sociedad que no asuma el crecimiento. Esto es lo que planteo con el comunismo decrecentista.

¿Cómo podemos avanzar hacia esa meta? ¿Es necesario que haya una revolución para alcanzar el comunismo del decrecimiento, como ocurre con el comunismo clásico?

Yo no hago un llamamiento a una revolución como la rusa. No creo que podamos acabar con este sistema mediante la toma del poder. Aunque nos hiciéramos con el poder en el parlamento nacional, eso no cambiaría el sistema económico. Lo que sí es más realista es la idea de Rosa Luxemburgo de una realpolitik revolucionaria a través de la reforma; gravando la riqueza para introducir una renta máxima, por ejemplo. Las reformas y las medidas políticas pueden acarrear muchos cambios en nuestra forma de percibir las cosas y de actuar en nuestro día a día, incluso aunque no consigan acabar con el capitalismo de forma inmediata. Pero una transformación de nuestra conciencia y de nuestros comportamientos cotidianos nos permite ampliar el espacio para exigir cambios más radicales. En mi opinión, es así como avanzaremos gradualmente hacia una sociedad basada en el decrecimiento. Hay personas (sobre todo jóvenes) en Alemania, en Francia e incluso en Estados Unidos que están exigiendo ese tipo de transformación. Es un proceso progresivo, pero creo que en la década de 2030 veremos ese tipo de cambio transformador que provocará un cambio sistémico en todo el mundo.

¿Los países capitalistas avanzados como Japón y Alemania están más preparados para el comunismo del decrecimiento?

Algunas ciudades como Ámsterdam, Barcelona, París y Nueva York tienen un potencial extraordinario. A nivel local se están introduciendo nuevas ideas, como la economía de la rosquilla. No espero que se produzca un cambio de arriba a abajo, como en la Revolución Rusa, sino de abajo a arriba; y las ciudades ofrecen más oportunidades para intervenir en la esfera política y fomentar el cambio. Las ciudades son algunos de los lugares donde debemos luchar más, y ojalá eso se extienda al ámbito nacional.

¿No es “comunismo decrecentista” un término innecesariamente aterrador?

Para algunas personas el decrecimiento ya es algo alarmante de por sí, y le estás añadiendo el comunismo y todo el bagaje que conlleva. Por esa misma razón no esperaba que El capital en la era del antropoceno fuera todo un éxito de ventas. Japón cuenta con tradición marxista, pero fuera de las universidades no es un término demasiado positivo. Japón es bastante capitalista y la población no cree en el marxismo ni en el socialismo. Sin embargo, la gente está cansada del capitalismo y la economía japonesa lleva muchos años en crisis. Hay mucho interés por ideas más radicales, pero el libro recibió muchas críticas y admito que el concepto de comunismo decrecentista es demasiado contundente. No obstante, utilizo estos términos como una especie de provocación. Lo que quiero decir es que el capitalismo no funciona y que no basta con arreglarlo. Necesitamos ideas como el decrecimiento y el comunismo para, al menos, explorar nuevas posibilidades. Si la gente empieza a hablar de nuevas ideas fuera del capitalismo, entonces creo que mi libro ya ha triunfado.

Los Estados comunistas eran conocidos por su planificación central. ¿Hay que recuperar la idea de la planificación económica, es decir, que el Estado tenga más peso en decisiones económicas, como en el volumen de producción de bienes, por ejemplo?

Sí, es necesario. Por eso el decrecimiento debe aprender del comunismo o, al menos, del socialismo. La corriente socialista tiene una larga tradición de planificación económica. Hay planificaciones muy malas, como la planificación burocrática extremadamente centralizada de la Unión Soviética, pero no es la única. Podríamos explorar formas de planificación diferentes y más democráticas. Quienes defienden el decrecimiento no suelen querer hablar de ello porque asocian cualquier tipo de planificación con el estalinismo, y propugnan la introducción de pequeños cambios y reformas puntuales. Me parece que eso no basta: también se ha de hablar y planificar qué tipo de industrias necesitamos y cuáles no.

El capitalismo no invertirá en la protección de la naturaleza ni en la construcción de grandes proyectos de infraestructuras. Sencillamente, no resulta rentable. Si queremos proteger el planeta, necesitamos una planificación concienzuda y la intervención del Estado. Tal vez la inteligencia artificial juegue un papel en este proceso, o quizás recurramos a la democracia local. Aún no tenemos la solución, pero tenemos que resolver ya la cuestión de cómo vamos a planificar la transición hacia la sociedad que deseamos.

Describe un día normal y corriente de un ciudadano normal en una sociedad comunista decrecentista.

Ahora mismo podríamos reducir la jornada laboral a cuatro días y creo que, con la ayuda de la tecnología, en el futuro podríamos reducirla a tres. Es decir, trabajar 25 horas a la semana. ¿Qué haremos con todo este tiempo libre? Pasaremos más tiempo con la familia. Nos dedicaremos a la jardinería, quizá hagamos deporte. Haremos algo de voluntariado y participaremos a nivel político en la planificación de nuestra producción y de la actuación de nuestro gobierno local. No nos desplazaremos al trabajo en coche, sino en autobús y tranvía, y la organización de nuestro lugar de trabajo será más horizontal. Deberíamos tener una mayor rotación laboral. Las nuevas tecnologías nos permiten compartir más y una mayor rotación de tareas. Yo, por ejemplo, que soy profesor universitario, podría enseñar también en comunidades locales o en la cárcel. Es más, podemos utilizar nuestras habilidades, capacidades y tiempo no solamente para ganar dinero, sino también para formar comunidades y educar a las nuevas generaciones.

Por lo demás, las cosas básicas son muy parecidas a las de ahora. Cuando llegas a casa puedes tomarte una cerveza o quizás ir a la sauna. No pasaremos mucho tiempo en centros comerciales, ni visitaremos Corea o Taiwán durante el fin de semana. Pasaremos más tiempo en la naturaleza y en lugares donde podamos relajarnos, pero no volveremos al estilo de vida de hace 120 años. Seguiremos utilizando la tecnología y seguiremos disfrutando de buenas comidas con amigos y familiares.

Dances with Neurons

Like nervous performers, our nerve cells or neurons start out immature – they’re nurtured during development and perhaps ‘trained’ by interacting with other cells and the extracellular matrix (ECM) – the swirling troupe of chemicals that surrounds our young cells. Trying to encourage lab-grown neurons to mature from a type of stem cell, researchers find it’s not enough just to have the ECM chemicals present, they have to move in rhythm with the neurons. Grown here surrounded by ‘dancing’ ECM chemicals (highlighted in green), this neuron (red) thrives. Researchers find the fastest jiving molecules work best, perhaps because they match up with the neurons’ chemical receptors, tiny arm-like proteins on the cell surface that move with the intensity of a flamenco flourish (although a billion times smaller and 1000 times faster). In the future, maturing neurons in this way may be several quick steps towards transplants to treat ageing-related illnesses like ALS.
