240 - Private Life
Tumblr media
We have another movie we adore to discuss this week! Writer/director Tamara Jenkins has long gaps between films, but has nevertheless delivered an all-killer-no-filler lineup, beginning in the late 1990s with Slums of Beverly Hills and returning a decade later with the Oscar-nominated The Savages. Her next film another decade later, Private Life, starred Kathryn Hahn and Paul Giamatti as New York creatives going through every hurdle to have a baby, including considering their adrift niece (played by Kayli Carter) as a surrogate. The film was a part of Netflix’s awards slate, but didn’t receive nearly the push as some of the streamer’s other films in their awards slate, but we will always eagerly await the next Tamara Jenkins project.
This episode, we talk about Kathryn Hahn’s formidable career of praised (and sometimes undersign) television performances, and the culmination of appreciation for the actress around WandaVision. We also discuss Giamatti’s “shady record exec” period, Netflix’s emergence as an awards player, and Hahn’s appearance in the THR Actress Roundtable and swooning for Rachel Weisz.
Topics also include the AARP Movies for Grownups qualifications for Best Grownup Love Story, Applebee’s menus, and John Carroll Lynch joins our Six Timers Club.

The Overnight Guest by Heather Gudenkauf
Tumblr media
Title: The Overnight Guest Author: Heather Gudenkauf Series: N/A Number of Pages: 352 Genre:  Domestic Thriller Publisher:  Park Row Date of Original Publication: January 25, 2022 ISBN:  978-0778311935
Needed a good murder mystery after the last few books I read. I asked for recommendations on a book group on Facebook and this was the one recommended to me. Unfortunately I had to listen to it in audio form instead of read it as I came down with COVID and the fatigue was too bad to read.
This book is called The Overnight Guest by Heather Gudenkauf. It is about a couple who is murdered and how their child and town coped with the gruesome murders. The book itself focuses on multiple storylines that move at different times in history and then come together at the end to solve the murder.
I liked this book instantly because it’s based in Iowa. I live in Minnesota so I tend to like when the Midwest gets a mention in a book…unfortunately it always seems to be a horror and murder mystery novel. Makes me wonder what the rest of the country actually thinks of us. I also liked the multiple moving storylines as it seemed to keep the book entertaining. The book had a good ending which I always admire.
There wasn’t too much that I didn’t like about the book. At times there were a little bit too many adjectives when the author described things but it got better by the second half of the book. The only other let down was that it was a little bit predictable. I figured out who the woman in the basement was, the main character (the writer) was and who the killer was, fairly fast in the storyline.
 ★★★★  Would recommend.

How did you get into fanfic?
Uhhhh idk if you mean reading or writing so I guess I'll answer both
Reading fic I started back AAAAAAAAAAAAGES ago when I was but a wee bab voyaging onto the internet, my earliest primary forays into the likes of deviantART and fanfiction.net were for Transformers fic, LOTR, and, hilariously, 2003 TMNT.
It took a while for me to actually start writing fic, I had an account on ff.net (now defunct) where I posted really stupid Firefly and Jurassic Park fic, and when I graduated to AO3 my first fic was for Critical Role because I was, predictably, obsessed with the estranged father/daughter relationship of Scanlan and Kaylie.
My first foray into writing ongoing fic was....................... well, it was for Lazytown, and to this day I'm the longest fic in that tag if you take the whole series into account xD which is still quite frankly mindboggling (and theoretically I am adapting that fic to its own thing, since it had like, nothing to do with the source material by the end)
At this point I find writing fic a lot easier and more rewarding than writing my own books, which is a shame, because I really really want to actually write those. I suppose they will come in time, when the turtle eventually release me from their death grip, but I don't foresee that happening anytime soon xD

A soft frown etches into the features of the red head’s face. Eyes observe the man for a moment before turning away again. “Do you make a habit of helping people you don’t know? Seems dangerous” probably a little more bitter than she should’ve been. Afterall, he had kind of saved her ass from that other creep. She should probably show a little more gratefulness, Kaylie wasn’t really the best at the whole…people thing. “Thanks” she finally submits, hands sliding into her pockets. “Do you need a ride somewhere or something? My car is in the parking garage over there.”

So here I am, just vibing, during what might just be Kayli’s most important period of her life. It’s your child’s formative years, as they say. What happens now will have everlasting effects. Effects that’ll last through maturity, and adulthood. Jesus.
But goddamn, the things I’d give to have whatever they teach in schools actually help Kayli grow up properly. Could care less about good discipline, good grades, and all that crap.
God, I wish I was young again.
Gotta start slow. One thing at a time. Maybe just taking her to the park today is good enough. And the mall tomorrow. Mommy’s been hard at work, doing her fair share to raise her. It’s time for some face-to-face with Daddy.
“Yesterday, yesterday, Monica was telling me about the game.”
“Ooo. What kind of game?”
“I think, I think it’s a puzzle game. But I forgot.”
Kids these days start getting into video games way earlier than me, back in my days.
“What else did she say about it?”
Kayli thinks for a while, then shakes her head.
“...I forgot. Also, also, I don’t care.”
“That’s not a nice thing to say.”
“But it’s not good to be lying.”
Oh dear.
“Lying is no good. I’m not telling you to lie. I’m telling you, you should care about Monica’s game.”
“But I’ve never played it.”
“Does Monica know you’ve never played it?”
“Yeah.”
“Do you know what that means? It means she thinks you might find it interesting.”
“I think it’s interesting. I think Monica is interesting.”
“That’s right. What people do isn’t always interesting. *People* are interesting.”
“Monica is interesting because she’s popular.”
Ah, right. Every classroom has its own politics, and no one’s kid is immune.
“Do you wanna become popular, Kayli?”
“No.”
“You don’t have to become popular, but you still need to make friends. That’s why you should care about what Monica or someone else is telling you.”
“Would Monica care about what I’m telling her even if I’m not popular?”
“I don’t know. I haven’t met Monica, so I can’t tell you.”
“What if, what if… I pretend to care about what Monica is telling me?”
“You don’t have to do that. Just try making friends. It’ll come to you, I promise.”
“If I have to be lying, then I don’t want friends.”
I stop and turn to Kayli.
“Kayli, look at me. Don’t think about it too much, ok? It’s not as complicated as you think.”
I rub Kayli’s shoulders a bit before continuing on our way.
“I think it’s complicated. For me. But I don’t think it’s complicated for Monica.”
“Why do you think that?”
“Because Monica doesn’t have to pretend. She knows I’m interested because she’s popular.”
“No one needs to pretend. I don’t wanna hear that word again when we’re talking about this.”
Love it when your kid sets up a moral framework that you have to abide by. I’ll try not to let it happen again.
“Ok, what about… make-believe?”
“Friends are not make-believe. I won’t be raising you to think that way.”
“But Daddy plays make-believe together with me all the time.”
“Make-believe can be fun sometimes.”
“I think Monica is playing make-believe with me too.”
You know what, I surrender.
“What kind of make-believe?”
“I think Monica is make-believing that I care when she tells me. About her game. And I’m make-believing that I care. But I forgot eeeeverything.”
“Maybe that’s why she’s popular. She make-believes that whoever she’s talking to cares about the things she is doing. And if she keeps doing that, she doesn’t have to make-believe anymore.”
“Ok, I change my mind.”
“About what?”
“I want…! To become popular.”

11: Landline
The Strange Redemption of Thaddeus Thawne: part eleven
masterlist | previous | next | ao3
Wally listens to Max’s landline ring and shakes his head. No other speedster would choose to walk at normal speed towards their ringing phone. Wally’s still the only Flash with a cell phone. Old-fashioned old men both of them, Jay and Max.
There’s a quiet click.
“Hello?” says a voice that makes Wally’s heart beat faster even before he puts a name to it: Inertia. It’s a distinctive voice, raspy, like a chronic smoker’s. All the Inertias have that voice, although they’ve got an uncanny ability to mimic Bart’s smoother voice when they want to.
“Hello?”
“It’s Wally,” he says. “Is Max there?”
“Yes and no.”
Wally’s stomach drops to his toes. What does that mean?
“He’s in the shower.”
“Right,” Wally says, relieved.
“Uh,” comes Inertia’s voice, slowly, “What… can I take a message?”
“Oh, no, that’s all right,” Wally says. He just wanted to check in with Max. There was no… specific reason for the call.
A snort. “Right. I’ll tell him you wanted to talk about me.”
So, the endless paranoia he displayed in the Watchtower hasn’t abated.
It was strange to see a Thaddeus clone stripped of the Inertia suit and goggles and boots, barefoot in baggy white Watchtower scrubs. It was unsettling. He’d looked almost angelic during his week-long healing trance, with his halo of bright hair even paler than Barry’s blond splayed out on the pillow. Wally started thinking of him as “Thad” and not “Inertia” then, during the week he was sleeping.
When he woke up, his scowl made him look like just another Thawne unmasked.
After he woke up, after some of the tests, Wally took his wrist to check his pulse. Thad tensed up. For once, he was quiet, and he didn’t lash out. Wally let go. Thad twisted his wrist in his hand.
“Flash,” he said, “Is it true that CRAYDL is dead?”
Wally was telling him as little as possible then. He didn’t trust him, and everything he did give Thad was met with hostile suspicion, but he didn’t mean to keep him in the dark about the machine. He genuinely hadn’t thought about telling him. Wally had assumed that he knew.
“CRAYDL”, he’d called it by name, and “dead”, not broken. He cared about it, Wally realized. Like Captain Cold would go ballistic if Golden Glider or Heat Wave died. This Thad wasn’t the psychopath some of the others were.
“Yes,” Wally said, and watched Thad’s eyes close. “I’m sorry.”
Thad swallowed, then said sardonically, “I thought so. If CRAYDL was alive, I’d be out of this stupid place scot-free.”
Wally let him get away with it.
Here and now, Wally says, “It’s not that. I talk to Max pretty often. I want to know how he’s doing.”
“I’ll tell him to call you later.”
Wally debates with himself for a split second. He could save himself the discomfort of trying to talk to Thaddeus Thawne. He could go play with Jai and Irey, who are doing some kind of interesting-sounding roughhousing behind him, or go for a quick run, or do the laundry, or meet Linda coming home from work. Or he could try to figure out what you say to a twisted clone whose even more twisted clones have caused you more grief than you care to think about.
But even if Thad wouldn’t realize it, it would be rude to just hang up.
“How are you doing?” Wally asks.
“Fine.”
“How’s living with Max?”
A huff filters over the line.
“He’s Max,” Thad responds like that explains everything.
“Frustrating?” Wally guesses.
“I don’t even know what he means by what he says half the time.”
Wally grimaces in sympathy.
“I know. He tries to tell me about the zen of the speed force sometimes and I can’t make head nor tails of it.”
“Hmm.”
Oh, blast. Wally supposes Max wouldn’t be telling the former Inertia any secrets of the speed force.
And, as the silence deepens, Wally realizes that “how to carry a conversation” probably wasn’t a priority in Thad’s training.
It’s not one of Wally’s strengths, either, but he gives it another shot.
“Do you know what college you want to go to?”
“No.”
A silence.
The front door crashes open, and Wally hears the sounds of Linda taking off her shoes. He wishes he’d decided to just hang out with his kids.
“Okay, what about your major?” Wally asks.
“I don’t even know what flavor of ice cream I like best, Flash. I just want a life.”
“Fair enough,” Wally says, feeling a bit desperate. He doesn't want to antagonize Thad, but everything he says seems to be putting him on the defensive!
“Have you done anything fun lately?”
Stupid question! He’s been trapped within a hundred feet of Max Mercury, and anyway (from what Wally hears) he hasn’t even had the energy to go for a run since appearing. Wally pinches the bridge of his nose.
“We went to the zoo today!”
The sudden enthusiasm in that raspy little voice! Wally smiles, surprised.
“The zoo, huh?”
“I got to see the penguins,” Thad confides reverently.
“Oh yeah?”
“They’re amazing.”
Linda comes up behind Wally and kisses his cheek. He smiles at her, and then Thad starts talking.
“Did you know the males build up fat all year so they can incubate their eggs, and they stay there for over thirty days and lose almost half of their body weight and then they go out and build it back up by hunting fish? They’re carnivores, did you know that? And they can’t fly, but—have you ever seen a penguin swim?”
“I’ve seen penguins, but I don’t think I’ve seen them swimming,” Wally says.
“They’re so beautiful,” Thad sighs.
Wally hastily hands Linda the phone so he can smother a laugh.
“Hello, this is Linda,” she says.
Wally doesn't hear what Thad says, but she smiles, looking bemused, and says, “I’m putting you on speakerphone if you’re all right with that?”
“Sure,” comes from the phone. “So the zoo, it has these tunnels, and the penguins—the tunnels are glass and they go under the penguins’ artificial sea, and you can see the penguins swimming…”
His voice goes soft and amazed at the end. Wally can’t speak for fear that Thad will pick up on how funny Wally finds this.
“That’s amazing,” Linda says.
“The Barnett Zoo has by far the most underwater tunnels of any zoo in three states.”
“Maybe I should do a story on it,” Linda suggests jokingly.
“Maybe you should,” Thad agrees.
“If she did a story,” Wally says, “What would you want her to make sure to show people?”
“The penguins, obviously. And… the whole polar exhibit was built with help from Native people from Alaska. That could make an interesting story, I think.”
“Oh, was it really?” Linda asks. “What people, specifically?”
“People from St. Lawrence Island. Ask Max. He helped.”
“Really?” Wally asks. “So that’s one of the things he gets up to.”
“I guess so.”
Thad sounds thoughtful.
Wally leans on Linda’s shoulder. They rock together. Whichever one of them thinks of a good question next will say it.
Wally loves her so much.
“Hey, who’re you talking to?” Irey asks, speeding to a halt and staring at the phone. Jai comes in and gets a juice box out of the fridge, then wanders into another room.
Wally pushes down a surge of worry. This Thad isn’t Inertia anymore. He’s not going to hurt Irey or Jai.
But if he tried—! Wally has protected his children from Inertias before. He’ll do it again. He’ll break the speedforce itself before he lets them be hurt.
“Cousin Thad,” Wally answers, blinking himself back to normal speed. “Remember, he lives with Max?”
“Oh yeah!” Irey says.
“This is Irey, my daughter,” Wally introduces her to the phone. “Say hello.”
“Hi cousin Thad!” Irey chirps.
Silence from the phone. Did Thad get disconnected?
“Hi,” Thad replies at last, “…cousin Irey.”
Oh. That had more significance to Thad than to Wally, didn’t it?
“What’re you talking about?” Irey asks.
“The zoo.”
Thad sounds almost abashed.
“I like the zoo,” Irey announces. “I like the reptile house best.”
“I haven’t been in a reptile house yet.”
“It’s really cool,” Irey informs him. “I like the lizards.”
“I like lizards too. Do you know about Komodo dragons?”
“I know they eat people,” Irey says, relishing the words. “And they’re huuuuge.”
“Yeah,” Thad says. “And their teeth has special nasty bacteria to poison things with.”
“Wow,” Irey says, and giggles. “Did you know there used to be a dinosaur that had two holes in its head?”
“Holes in its head?”
“And it might have used them to mix two gasses and breathe fire!”
“A real dragon!” Thad says, and Wally thinks: you’ve just gained a friend for life, kid. Congratulations.

hi!! here’s your request!! this was so cute i loved it so much 🥺 and dw your grammar is fine!!
also shoutout to @lextiny and kaylie (who doesn’t have a tumblr) for helping me out with this last night love you both :)
Taeil
His version of celebrating with you would be so sweet
He would probably take you to the place where you first had a date
And I think he would try to replicate that date
I think he would show his affection to you in a subtle way rather than going all out because he’d rather his actions to be from the heart :’)
Johnny
With Johnny I feel like it would be more spontaneous yk?
Like,,, he’s a pretty high energy person
So I feel like with him it would be more high energy and energetic
Would probably take you out somewhere like a park during the day
At the end of the day he would take you to a fancy restaurant to wrap up the special occasion :)
Taeyong
Celebrating with Taeyong would be so cute and sweet 🥺
He would first take you to a place that reminds him of you
He would buy you so many presents and things that he thinks you would really like
At the end of the day Taeyong would probably make a romantic dinner at home and just unwind with you
Yuta
Okay celebrating with Yuta would be the cutest thing ever
He would probably make you something like a photo book compiled of all of the pictures that he has of you two
I feel like he would take you out to an amusement park or something because he’s a pretty energetic person
After that he would wrap it up with a cute arcade date and would be really competitive akdfj
Doyoung
I feel like Doyoung would plan everything out
He would probably start off the day in a really cute cat cafe
Seeing you play with the animals makes his heart leap out of his chest 🥺
He would take you around to the cutest restaurants ever
like the ones that you see on ig posts and whatnot
Jaehyun
Jaehyun would go all out
He would take you to a fancy restaurant for your date
Like one of those top notch ones that are really expensive
And he make sure that everything was absolutely perfect and just the way you like it because he’d do anything for his favourite person :)
WinWin
WinWin be more of a “go with the flow” kind of person in my opinion
I feel with him it would be more spontaneous and very high energy
He would take you places that you both love going to
He might even sprinkle in like a dance class here and there because he loves going there with you akdbjf
Jungwoo
Ooh I feel like Jungwoo would plan a picnic date for you two
He would probably ask the members to make him food or he would order though akjbsfnf
After the picnic he would probably go on a walk with you around the park
The members have described him to be like a puppy so he would probably just be running around here and there having fun with you kadbf
Mark
Remember his latest instagram live where he went to the Han river and walked around for a bit?
He would probably take you to the Han river and spend time with you
Would probably have a picnic with you and would just walk around with you talking about the most randomest things
Would be really sweet overall and would make you fall for him again 🥺
Haechan
Okay Haechan is very very very competitive
So he would take you out to an escape room and have fun together
He would find it so cute to see how invested you got in the game
After that he would take you out to a really cute vintage diner and would just adore the way that you looked so cute and adorable

the twins’ birthday has arrived! rather than throw a big party, goldie and kennedy just invited some family and friends to the local park to celebrate. unfortunately, grandma scarlett didn’t show, but uncle noah & auntie kaylie, uncle oscar & auntie samara, auntie kinsley, and viki and her little girl kaia, made sure to make enough of a fuss of the kiddos to make up for it.
