A Decade of Delights
With this post (No. 413), we mark the tenth anniversary of The New Yorker. Since I began A New Yorker State of Mind in March 2015, I’ve attempted to give you at least a sense of what the magazine was like in those first years, as well as the historical events that often informed its editorial content as well as its famed cartoons. Those times also informed the advertisements; indeed, in some…

141 + König, and Alejandro going to a concert/music festival HCs
Note: I went to Sick New World festival in Las Vegas this past weekend. Nearly died from heat stroke/exhaustion, but it was worth it!.
2nd note: These HCs are about rock/metal music festivals/concerts with mosh pits, walls of death, etc.
@ghostsareeverywhereblah2 from our last conversation 😂😂😂
Captain John Price
Tumblr media
• Avoids the mosh pits and wall of death. He's too old for that shit!
• Need water or electrolytes? He's your man! Stay hydrated! Probably has a fanny pack with electrolyte packs
• He also has sunscreen and extra towels. If it's during the summer and in the middle of a desert. Carries extra bladder packs for hyradtion backpacks.
• Will take pictures and videos for you while you get your ass shoved around in the pit
• Has snacks so you won't have to spend money on the expensive food there.
• Is annoyed by the crowd surfers. One of them knocked his hat off, and now he can't find it!
• He is literally the dad for your group! 😂 if you're crowdsurfing and you get hurt. He will pull you out of the pit and will not let you go back in.
• But he still has a great time
Simon "Ghost" Riley
Tumblr media
• You pretty much begged him to go with you and the others to the event
• If it's during the summer, he'll wear a more summer appropriate type of clothing
• Wore his balaclava. He has a weird tan line on his face now. He didn't reapply it again after 2 hours.
• Might (he will) let you sit on his shoulders so you can get better photos/videos
• Like Price, he will carry extra water and sunscreen.
• Doesn't go into the pit. Enjoys watching others get shoved around though.
• Like Price, he also hates crowd surfers.
• Because he is a big guy, the moshers throw themselves at him. They're like mosquitoes to him, annoying AF.
• Will protect you if you don't go into the pit, but you wanna take video and photos. He's willing to sacrifice his sanity to let these small moshers shove and bounce off of him from behind
Johnny "Soap" MacTavish
Tumblr media
• Is the crowd surfer that knocked off Price's hat
• Will go into the mosh pit, and wall of death over and over and over until he physically can't do it anymore.
• Might be a bit (or a lot) bruised afterwards. He's a heavy sweater.
• "Boom" by P.O.D is his song 😂😂. Lost his shit when Korn played "Shoots and Ladders" because of the bagpipes at the beginning.
• Doesn't listen to Price on putting on sunscreen and not hydrating. Too high on the concert/festival vibe, will probably pass out at some point.
• Is a rotisserie chicken afterwards. Burnt Soap!
• Will yell "SCOTLAND FOREVERRRR!." at any given point
• Probably wears a kilt and no shirt 😂. Like I said he's a rotisserie chicken now
Kyle "Gaz" Garrick
Tumblr media
• Like Soap, is a crowd surfer and will go into the pit!
• Unlike Soap, he will hydrate and put on sunscreen every few hours.
• Loses his hat quite often but finds it eventually. He also wears a wet towel under his hat to keep cool.
• He wears one of those hyradtion backpacks and never takes it off. Only to refill it.
• Will record himself on crowd surfing and hope he doesn't drop his phone in the crowd.
• Him and Soap are pit survivors and will say it with confidence! Especially if there are guys twice their size in the pit, shoving them around.
• He might get a little sunburnt, but it's not as bad as Soap's. Is high on the festival/concert vibe and energy
Alejandro Vargas
Tumblr media
•Goes into the pit, but doesn't crowd surf. He sees it as a way to release energy.
• Came prepared. Water, electrolytes, sunglasses, hats, sunscreen, snacks. More prepared than Price.
• Makes sure you apply sunscreen every few hours. Will do it for you while you take photos. Buys you something to eat, an actual meal. Not a snack.
• Will let you sit on his shoulders to get a better view of the stage. Will also take photos and videos for you.
• Will sing along with passion! No matter how horrible his voice is 🤣
• Regrets daring Soap to crowdsurf while Gaz following behind on it. Will not tell Price though 😂
• Will protect you from the pit! No one will hurt you! He'll gladly take some crowdsurfers foot (Soap) to the face! Or the back of the head.
König
Tumblr media
• Oh boy. Poor baby absolutely HATES crowds! Especially crowds with 40-60,000 people in the heat.
• Was reluctant about going with you and the others, having an internal battle with himself. But decided to go against his anxiety. He does his best to avoid the pit.
• You made sure he stayed away from the pit. All that shoving, and running around is one of the many ways to trigger his anxiety.
• But on the bright side, he can see EVERYTHING! His face is protected from the sun. His hood is super helpful, but he still applies sunscreen.
• He makes sure you and the others are hydrated. Like Gaz, he also has a hydration backpack.
• He will take photos/videos for you since he can see everything that is going on.
• If he were to get caught in the pit, he will freeze out of fear. You, Gaz and Soap will have to drag him out of it and back to safety, with Price and Ghost most likely.
• He'll have to take a seat somewhere in shade away from people, but he does have good time. Probably won't go to another concert/festival again for some time, or ever.

Marital Rape, Entitlement, and the Myth of the Repressed Male
I'm reading Intimate Matters: a History of Sexuality in America by John D'Emilio and Estelle B. Freedman for my capstone project, and I'm frankly blown away by the depths of misogyny reached in parts of this book. Under the cut, I've quoted a passage from chapter 8, "Civilized Morality Under Stress," and given my response to it.
CWs for marital rape and rape apologism.
Most women felt less sexual desire than their husbands, and in the Mosher study, many described their "ideal habit" as involving less sex than they had. As one woman born in 1878 told Mosher, she did not find sex agreeable, yet had intercourse two to three times a week because her "husband's pleasure demands it and therefore [she] prefers to want it herself." [...] Another woman [...] had been badly disappointed by her husband's sexual demands. Throughout their sixteen-year marriage, she had acquiesced to intercourse more frequently than she cared to have it. The result was that she did not find sex agreeable and encapsulated male character by saying that "men have not been properly trained." Although her own experience in marriage makes this woman's judgement about men understandable, the deficiency did not lie in men's training as much as in the cultural prescriptions about male character. If the middle-class woman suffered from a tension between the inadequacy of her premarital instruction and the possibilities of the conjugal bed, her male counterpart found himself battered by the incompatibility of what he was told was his "natural" self and the ideals expected of a husband. Late-nineteenth-century commentators, both professional and lay, described men as assertive, aggressive, and impassioned, with a physiology and character that was, by nature, "more or less explosive." Such untamed energy had value in the world of work, though even there a man of integrity might strive to master his most unruly impulses. But, in the home, as husband and father, man's nature served him poorly, and he was expected to exhibit self-control and restraint. In short, the middle-class man was a personality divided against itself. --- Intimate Matters: a History of Sexuality in America, John D'Emilio and Estelle B. Freedman, third edition, pp. 176-179
-----
"Prior to the 1970s, marital rape was legal in every US state." (wikipedia)
-----
"10. The worst thing about male violence is that it makes men look bad.
11. Whatever women suffer from, it is worse when it happens to men.
12. Women’s ability to recognize male behavior patterns is misandry." ("The Rules of Misogyny")
----
Honestly, there's so much pure misogyny in this quote that I'm having trouble even knowing where to begin. I think I'll move sentence by sentence through the passage, and then zoom out to make some broader observations. Bear with me, as I'm thinking my way through this as I write.
What is "marital rape," anyway? According to the Indiana Coalition Against Sexual Assault (INCASA), "Marital Rape is the term used to describe sexual acts committed without a wife’s consent and/or against her will by the woman’s husband. He may use physical force, threats of force to her or another person, or implied harm based on prior assaults, causing the woman to fear that physical force will be used if she resists." So far, nothing in the passage from Intimate Matters (henceforth "IM") strictly, explicitly fits the definition of marital rape. However, I'd like to call attention to the wording used to describe the women's "consent" to the sex described. The woman from paragraph two of the IM passage is described as having "acquiesced" to sex with her husband, and the woman from paragraph one describes sex as being something her "husband's pleasure demands (emphasis mine)." Neither acquiescence nor cooperation with a demand (a demand against which she had no legal recourse; she could either agree to the sex or be raped in a more violent manner) sounds like enthusiastic consent to me. Furthermore, INCASA mentions societal pressure for women to have sex as a facilitator of marital rape:
Stereotypes about women and sex such as women enjoy forced sex, women say “no” when they really mean “yes,” and it’s a wife’s duty to have sex continue to be reinforced in our culture. Such stereotypes mislead men into believing they should ignore a woman’s protests. These stereotypes also mislead women into believing they must have sent the wrong signals. Women blame themselves for unwanted sexual encounters, believing they are bad wives for not enjoying sexual encounters, or believing they are bad wives for not enjoying sex against their will.
"Women blame themselves for unwanted sexual encounters, believing they are bad wives for not enjoying sexual encounters," and yet this fact is unaccounted for in D'Emilio and Freedman's analysis of these women's responses in IM. Nowhere are the encounters in chapter 8 of IM referred to as marital rape, and the authors even go on to make excuses for the rapist.
Apparently, these husbands were so "battered" by the pressures of their patriarchal society that they simply had to rape their wives. They may even have felt guilty about it. This guilt was, apparently, not strong enough to prevent "sixteen years" of repeated marital rape. If the man felt such strong conflict, he would have stopped.
If the middle-class woman suffered from a tension between the inadequacy of her premarital instruction and the possibilities of the conjugal bed, her male counterpart found himself battered by the incompatibility of what he was told was his "natural" self and the ideals expected of a husband.
This sentence in particular enrages me. It portrays the discomfort and guilt of a conflicted identity with the psychological and physical torture of rape. The message is clear: men's hurt feelings are as significant as women's rape. I can't find the words to describe my disgust.

From the Foundation for Coast Guard History:
"We pause to remember...
15 May 1934, Sinking of the Nantucket Lightship -- During the night of 14 May 1934 RMS Olympic, sister-ship to the lost Titanic, was homing in on the lightship's radio beacon. Nearly 75 times larger than the 630-ton lightship, the White Star liner was steaming at about 20 knots in the center of the western terminus of the trans-Atlantic shipping lanes. By 5:00 am on the morning of 15 May, Olympic was in thick fog that necessitated the reduction of its speed to 16 knots, then 12 knots.
The lightship's radio signal and fog signals were picked up by Olympic at about 10:55 am and appeared to be off the ship's starboard bow. Captain John Binks ordered Olympic's course to be changed ten degrees to port and her speed to be reduced to 10 knots. Her radio operator attempted unsuccessfully to make contact with LV-117 to determine her exact position, but the fog signals could still be heard, apparently at a longer distance off the starboard bow. It appeared that Olympic was well clear of the lightship, but a few minutes later the lookout spotted LV-117 dead ahead. Binks ordered the ship's rudder to be set full to port, the engines to be set full speed astern, and the watertight doors to be closed throughout the vessel. Olympic slowed to only about 3 knots but it was too late and she collided with the side of the lightship at 11:06 am. at 40°37′2″N 69°37′6″W. Although she was not moving fast, her sheer weight (52,000 tons when fully fuelled), and thus her kinetic energy, completely wrecked the smaller vessel.
Olympic's passengers barely noticed the collision, which First Class passenger Sir Arthur Steel-Maitland registered only as a "slight jar". The changed settings of the engines were much more noticeable, sending vibrations throughout the ship as they were put into reverse and brought up to maximum revolutions. Passengers came onto the deck to find out what was going on and were met by the smell of oil and the sight of debris in the sea around Olympic.
For those aboard LV-117, the collision was felt much more directly. "We saw the Olympic loom out of the fog a short distance away," stated C.E. Mosher, LV-117's first mate, in a newspaper interview two months after the accident. "The visibility was only 500 feet. A crash was inevitable. I sounded the collision alarm. We all donned life preservers. Then we waited." When the collision came, said Mosher, "it was more like a hard push and a terrific shaking, a crunching and grinding. It was not a loud smash as one might expect. The Olympic kept coming through ..." John Perry told the press, "At the time of the smash I was in the radio cabin. I barely had time to get on deck and swim for my life." Robert Laurent commented that as "it all happened so quickly, you had no chance to panic. We all had our life preservers and it was a good thing that we did."
Olympic responded extremely rapidly to the accident. The portside emergency lifeboat had already been swung outboard and was lowered just before Olympic came to a halt. The starboard emergency boat was launched a few minutes later, along with one of Olympic's motor boats.
The scene was described by The New York Times:
"Nosing through the dense pall of the fog, the boats searched the area for almost two hours, while those on board the liner prayed for their success. A hatch drifted past, bearing the figure of an unconscious man. Shouts from the liner directed one of the lifeboats to the rescue. The same boat picked up a swimmer not far away, and the floating body of a man who appeared to be dead went past.
The lifeboats disappeared from sight in the murk and the watchers from the liner waited breathlessly. A red buoy bearing the name 'Nantucket' floated by, informing most of the passengers for the first time what they had struck.
After three-quarters-of-an-hour the starboard lifeboat came into view. As those who eagerly lined the rails saw that it contained only one figure aside from those at the oars, and that [figure was] motionless, they groaned.
But a minute later the port boat appeared with five or six men in the blue 'monkey suits' of the Lighthouse Service. Two of those also appeared to be lifeless. One man in civilian clothes, Captain Braithwaite, sat stiff and upright ... a cut on his head bled profusely ..."
The three boats managed to rescue seven of the lightship's eleven crewmen and brought them aboard, but three of the seven died in Olympic's hospital. Captain Braithwaite, First Mate C.E. Mosher, Radio Operator John Perry and Oiler Laurent Robert all survived the disaster. Engineer William Perry, Oiler Justin Richmond, Cook Alfred Montero, First Cook I. Pinna, Seaman E.B. George, Seaman John Fortes and Seaman John Rodriques did not survive the sinking.
The lightship had sunk so quickly that anyone below decks had little chance of surviving.
Binks ordered Olympic to resume course for New York at 12:29 pm once it had become clear that there were no more survivors. The liner had suffered only minimal damage in the collision, comprising some dented hull plates which were repaired in a dry dock in Southampton in May–June 1934. She was allowed to leave New York at the scheduled time on 17 May after a brief inspection. The dependents of those killed in the accident were given restitution through the United States Employees's Compensation Act.

A kedvencem a sárgás beütésű „Thrashelj, mintha 1986 lenne” feliratú darab.  Azt hiszem, ez lehetne a mottónk Majka kollégával. Az a gyanúm, hogy fogok még tőlük rendelni:
https://www.mosherclothing.com/

A Tadpole on Wheels

DYING FETUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey everyone, here is my 7th review of 2022, Dying Fetus! It had been a decade since I last saw them which was on Saturday March 24th, 2012 on the Metal Alliance tour with 3 Inches of Blood and Devildriver. Funnily enough on May 31st of yesterday it had been exactly 12 years since I saw them for the first time which was at the MOD Club with Misery Index and Arsis and then the next night was Obituary with Entombed, which made for an awesome double shot of death metal. This was also a show with a lot of unforgettable moments.
Let’s begin the festivities!
First band up was UNDEATH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had heard of this band by name before but never got around to listening to their music but from what I saw on metal archives is they were a death metal band from Rochester, New York and they had a great show. Frontman Alexander Jones had beckoned the crowd to take a few steps to the front which they did and when he commanded the crowd to ignite a circle pit, they complied with his order. Funny moment that happened was a guy saying “Wall of Death, Wall of Death!” and he was doing a couple of jumping jacks in the crowd which made me laugh and Alexander Jones had said “I didn’t ask for a wall of death” and then went on to make more funny banter about it, so a wall of death was formed and the guy doing the jumping jacks was taking command of directing both sides to charge when he gave the signal. Definitely a fun band to see.
Next band up was FROZEN SOUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Another band I hadn’t heard of before but looked them up and they played Death Metal except they were from the Lone Star State of Texas and from the city of Dallas. I also liked before their song Hand of Vengeance that during the recording I heard the familiar voice of Mr. Freeze from Batman The Animated Series, which I thought was really cool. Frontman Chad Green had a banter going that was half amusing and half serious and the funny part he said was “Goddamn you make a fat man proud” Then he shifted towards a serious tone by saying “These last two and a half years have been anguish. Tragedy on every corner. Mental health is no joke. I’m sick of losing friends. We need to take better care of each other, here this is like a family. If you need someone to talk to, message us, and we will reply. Come by the merch table if you want to talk”. I definitely got the notion that by trade Chad Green is a psychiatrist or therapist or one who is a mental health advocate and wants to try and be there for as many people as possible. It was also cool how he dedicated the next song to Trevor Strnad who had recently taken his own life and to late Power Trip frontman Riley Gale who had died from a drug overdose 2 years ago as well. Another funny moment that happened was when Chad Green ordered the moshers to get down and do push ups like a Drill Sergeant at boot camp.
Last two bands were Bodysnatcher and Chelsea Grin, the latter I brand as Hell Pee Rubbish Bin, and I’ll say both were absolutely boring and awful, typical generic deathcore that puts me to sleep as if I’m breathing in sleeping gas fumes. Would’ve much rather heard a recording of Taco Hell induced diarrhoea to make me laugh hysterically.
Last band up was DYING FETUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This was my 3rd time seeing them and as well the first time catching them live in a decade and man did it feel great seeing them live once again as they’re solid live. It would’ve been my 4th time catching them had I seen them at Wacken Open Air 2018 but I missed them as Judas Priest were playing at the same time. After they finished playing Schematics, John Gallagher got on the mic and said “We’d like to dedicate this set to a guy named Bob Shaw. His wife had requested that I spread his ashes inside the opera house” so John pulled out a small jar filled with the ashes of the late Bob Shaw since he was a fervent supporter of death metal and the death metal scene in Toronto and then spread them inside the opera house, which was definitely a touching moment. I will add that John looks so much different compared to the last time I saw him when he was bald and clean shaven as he grew his hair out and grew a beard, so with that look and wearing his hat backwards, he’s got the Rob Barrett look going on. Plus at one point John Gallagher had said “This next song is about a guy going to TIm Horton’s to pick up some timbits. He then buys them and everything for the bitch. He then takes her back to his motel where he gouges out her eyeballs and proceeds to have sex with her cranium. You know what song I’m talking about? This song is called Skull Fucked!” I cracked up at that banter. I’ll also add there was a roadie wearing pink jean shorts who would be dancing around to the techno music being played and as well two girls wearing green and purple teletubby hats, which I thought was also funny as clearly people were out to let loose and not take themselves seriously. Here’s Dying Fetus’ set:

The Basics of Kemetic Philosophy (without the appropriated shit from Judaism)
I'm starting a series on Kemetic philosophy because a lot of my readings on it have included things like Kabbalah (Kabala, Kabbala, Qabala, etc.) which is directly appropriated from Judaism, and definitely would not have been included in ancient Kemetic philosophy.
This series relies heavily on the following books/independent publications (this continues to be updated as the series continues):
The Instruction of Ptah-Hotep and the Instruction of Ka'Gemni: The Oldest Books in the World translated by John Murray
Teachings of Ptahhotep
Maat: The 11 Laws of God by Ra Un Nefer Amen (somewhat, this book literally has the Kabbalistic tree of life on its' cover so I don't take a lot from it--it's really just a good jumping-off point because it covers so much)
Maat: The Moral Idea in Ancient Egypt by Maulana Karenga
The Literature of Ancient Egypt: An Anthology of Stories, Instructions, and Poetry edited with an introduction by William Kelly Simpson. Authors include Robert K. Ritner, Vincent A. Tobin, and Edward F. Wente.

“Robbed Poor Boxes,” Toronto Star. March 18, 1941. Page 2. ---- ‘A’ Police Court, at the City Hall, Magistrate Gullen. Thirty days was the penalty given Anthony Kosseck in police court today for stealing money from poor boxes in Mount Carmel church.
Rev. Father Dales told Magistrate Gullen that the accused man’s wife was ill and that they were in poor circumstances.
‘I am taking that into consideration,’ declared the court.
Neglecting to report as an enemy alien Antonio Miles was fined $25 and costs or one month. Yozef Novisedlak was convicted of a similar offence and was also assessed $25 and costs or one month.
Aubrey Staley, charged with attempted robbery and theft, was remanded to March 25th.
‘No bail,’ said Crown Attorney Malone.
The charge of having drugs, against Wilfred Tutty, was put over for hearing until March 25. Bail was set at $5,000.
Guilty, pleaded Thomas McBurney, 16, to a charge of breaking into a factory on DeGrassi St. and stealing stamps and $1.18. He also pleaded guilty of stealing a purse containing two rings and contents.
J. J. Weston, owner of the factory, stated he was not worried about what was stolen, but about the damage. ‘Apparently the culprits got mad because they did not find more money. The place was upset, windows and lights broken and the fire extinguisher emptied all over my office,’ he related.
‘In a statement accused admitted entering the place accompanied by three juveniles,’ said Detective-Sergeant Mosher. ‘He also admitted taking the purse from a parked auto.’
Magistrate Gullen remanded McBurney in custody until March 25 for sentence.
Convicted of receiving an auto truck tire knowing it to be stolen, Kenneth Handyside was sentenced to three months.
Questioned by defence counsel, Frank Callaghan, accused, denied having anything to do with the tire. ‘The other chap asked me to try and sell it. I do not know his name,’ he said.
‘This man has a long record and is a persistent thief,’ declared Crown Attorney Malone, after John Naulls was convicted of stealing clothes from a line on Monarch Park Ave.
‘Leave drink alone,’ said Magistrate Gullen, sending Naulls down for four months.
Hans Jensen of the Norwegian army, up for sentence for taking a car without the owner’s consent, was given two months.
‘There is no person here from his unit. They were notified. Apparently he is not wanted,’ said the crown.
