A bit of #Caturday history: Salty, mascot of the San Diego Coast Guard Air Station. In 1945, she was the first cat to participate in an air rescue mission when she and her kitten stowed away on a plane just before it took off to rescue a pilot who had gone down at sea.

Trump Insults Another Member Of The Military
Trump called the WWII dead "losers". He criticized Gold Star soldiers & John McCain, a war hero. Now, he is now criticizing Nikki Haley husband, an active military soldier. We should repect those who sacrifice to serve and honor those who gave their life for this country. None of Trump's family serviced. Trump avoid serving with the excuse of a foot spur. A FOOT SPUR!
Biden's son served.

Under Nazi Bombers at Salerno
Record Group 26: Records of the U.S. Coast GuardSeries: Photographs of Activities, Facilities, and PersonalitiesFile Unit: Art by Gildersleeve through Klein
This image depicts Coast Guard ships coming under German attack while delivering war materiel during the invasion of Salerno, Italy.  One large ship is in the foreground.  Smaller boats unload a tank and two trucks.  Coast Guard personnel on the boats and on the beach react to the attack.  Two airplanes are seen in the upper left corner of the drawing.  Underneath them are plumes of water rising up from where bombs have struck the water.

TW: BLOOD

This is my own personal headcanon. Before joining the Octonauts and rising to be the captain, Barnacles used to be a part of the coastguards, and one night while patrolling the quarters, a person he thought he could trust snuck up on him and attempted to kill him. Barnacles managed to fend himself, but that didn't leave him unwounded. He was left with a permanent scar on his eyes. Barnacles attained other wounds from his other battles, and seeing them always give him some grief.
Now that he's captain of the Octonauts, Barnacles sees his scars as a sign of resilience. The vegimals often admire his scars and ask him about his war stories often (considering that I imagine Barnacles somewhere in his 40s or 50s) so he's pretty a grandpa to the kids along with Professor Inkling.
I feel like Barnacles being a part of the military would be fitting for him because of his heroic personality, but he wouldn't have matured into the person he is if he didn't receive some wounds from it.

now that oceangate have stated they believe those in the submersible are dead, can we please not make posts talking about how the ghosts of all the third-class passengers killed the millionaires on board?
like yes, its a poetic idea, but those passengers you claim to be vengeful ghosts were real people. not only is it likely disrespectful on religious grounds because fun fact, not everone on titanic were white westerners, but it is also just fucking disrespectful to create ghost stories about real people who died during a tragedy.
the titanic tragedy was a real thing that happened; the people who died were real people. unfortunately, its one of, if not the most romanticised shipwreck where many real life people have mischaracterised for so long that this is how we now remember them. i mean look at j bruce ismay who wasnt the money-hungry, corner-cutting, evil man hes been made out to be.
how about we not mischaracterise any more folks? and we not create ghost stories about the real people who died?
its really not that difficult to show compassion and respect to the dead.

There is no reason to thank us because we simply do not exist. We are nobodys. Ghosts in the night. Not to be seen or heard from.
