Daily Hobie HC! This was inspired by the fact I am very close to getting my wandering friend those little kid leashes so she doesn't run off haha If you're one of those people who usually wander off, Hobie will find one way or another to keep you close to him. Sometimes he'll loop his long, lanky fingers through your belt loops, or he'll intertwine his fingers with yours. Or if it's cold and snowing, he'll somehow get a scarf long enough to wrap around both of you, just so you don't wander off. If you or him are listening to music with (non-wireless) earbuds, you bet one with be yours and the other's his, or vice versa. He just doesn't want to lose you in the crowd sometimes...however, if he's feeling a little teasy, he'll let you wander off. When you realize he's gone, you'll try to find him...except he's been behind you, somehow, the entire time, waiting to grab you by the shoulders and scare you. "BOO!" - 🐦‍⬛
Lol I'm the friend who looks out for the friend who wanders 😂 as much as i want to wander around I can't because I have no sense of direction and a minute later I'd find myself in the backrooms 🤣🤣
DAILY HOBIE HC‼️‼️‼️
That's so adorable 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰 he likes to joke that he needs to put a bell on you so he can find you easier lol the sharing a pair of earphones has me in a chokehold, the closeness of it all 🥴 (I've only experienced it once and I had to endure his shitty taste in music 😂😂 but hey it was adorable and romantic 🤣 )
The "boo!" Ooohhh he's about to get screamed at in a public place for that 😂

Tuesday Typings
I came back from the North American Science Fiction Convention with so many books. Notes on costume stuff, one giant costume todo list, and recent reads/watches as well.
Books acquired recently
The Archive Undying, Emma Mieko Candon, 2023, bought
This is How You Lose the Time War, Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone, 2020, bought — finished and enjoyed
The Sng of Achilles, Madeline Miller, 2012, bought
Translation State,, Ann Leckie, 2023, bought
Francis: The People's Pope, Ted Rall, allegedly autographed, 2018, bought
The Stars Like Dust, Isaac Asimov, 1996 paperback printing, gifted
The Courier, Gerald Brandt, 2016, free pile
Alliance Rising, C. J. Cherryh and Jane S. Fancher, 2019, free pile
Foundryside, Robert Jackson Bennett, 2019 Broadway promo printing, free pile
Mica, fille de Transyl, Michèle Laframboise, 2012, free pile — I do not read the French; this is going on a gift pile for a Francophone friend
To Climb a Flat Mountain, G. David Nordley, 2009?, bought after the author gave me an answer to a worldbuilding problem
Burning Days, Glenn Grant, 2011, free
This Virtual Night, C.S. Friedman, 2021, free
To Each This World, Julie Czerneda, 2022, free and signed
The Complete Smoke Trilogy, Tanya Huff, 2019, free
She Who Became The Sun, Shelley Parker-Chan, 2021, free
All of the free books are from Pemmi-Con; half are from DAW Publishers who were really, really generous.
Recent Reading and Watching
This is How You Lose the Time War surprised me with the identity of the Seeker; mid-book I thought there might be another operative tailing them, or a Purple child, or a third side to this war. That last prediction was quite close!
Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn - Bande Dessinee Episode: 0 wasn't particularly thrilling, but I value it because it fills out the characters of Full Frontal and Angelo Sauper, and how the Zeonist public sees things before the initiation of the Third Neo Zeon War, aka The Laplace Incident.
Star Wars: The Clone Wars has been good through season 7; I ned to track down season 8 to see if they later appearance of Ashoka in Star Wars Rebels makes any sense.
Legend of Galactic Heroes: I have finally finished this. RIP to a legend, but we all knew that the death flag for the last person to die was waved at the end of the third season. Rubinsky's end was also fitting: reflecting of how he was no longer part of the plot, he was also no longer part of politics. His last gasp felt irrelevant, and really was.
Pacific Rim: The Black is a 3dcg film that's reminiscent of RWBY and Dragon Prince in style, but with the same Ramin Djiwadi soundtrack, and some neat twists that really delve into the fridge horror of the setting. But this is a kids' show, so there's little blood, the decapitations happen out of frame, and the heads don't roll too far. Episode 7 has a nice "it's dangerous to go alone; take this" moment.
Computing
A 2.1A powerbank is not enough to stably power a Pi 1 B+ with a 4.0" square Hyperpixel Touch display and a wireless keyboard. Big Sad. Next question is if a PiSugar 3 battery controller will work with a Pi 1 B+ or if I should splurge $75 on a Pi 4 for this device.
I'd like to have a mobile compute terminal that's smaller than a 13" laptop, but still has USB ports. Scrollwheel and a button to toggle the OSK would also be nice.
Primary nonwork laptop's keyboard continues to degrade; It's becoming a desk item. Its degradation is the primary driver of the new palmtop development.
Actually, wait, I have a spare CM4 from a StereoPi 2 device. I could use that, with a compatible breakout board maybe. Or I could test the Hyperpixel screen on the Stereopi board directly. Then I'd have a 4" touchscreen mated to a … 5" wide board? Well, it'll at least let me test some things, like whether the CM4 works for this use case. Bonus dual cameras is a questionable bonus.
Crafting
KInda burnt out on crafting, tbh. Last two weeks were full of crunch before Pemmi-Con/NASFiC, which netted me a "Judge's Choice in Novice Class" award and "Best Use of Modern Tech" in the Masquerade competition.
Next up, over @glowingskull, I plan to post rundowns of the stuff I made, and maybe some shapefiles, but there's a lot of work left in this costume and I plan to redo large parts of the headgear.
Because, let's be honest, the post-con todo list for that costume is basically:
Better photographs?
Write up the project
Print off a holder for these parts, because I'm retiring them to mount on the wall
Redesign snout, again, to remove grilles and double-thicken all the parts
Resculpt temples and ears of skull
Put a visor in the eye holes
Eye-lights in visor?
Enclose head: back of skull, ventilation, neck sock
Redo the flame staff's camera monopod mount attachment point for durability (may require welding?)
Sculpt a model for the chestpiece, so it's plastic instead of foam
Sculpt a model for arm bracers
And then on top of that I also want to:
Document the Servicer outfit
Sew on a Masonic patch for the Servicer outfit
Build some DIY NVGs for use in costume projects like this one
Write up the Baba Yaga's Hut costume which won Best In Show
I think my next costume goal, after the revised Turaga Vakama, will be an Earth Federation Space Forces officer uniform, so I can give the planned "WTF is Zeon" lectures in character.
The next head goal will be a Deinonychus head with articulated jaw, which requires advancements in augmented reality. Need to get the StereoPi working, or ditch/sell it and switch to paired NVG monocles.
Music
I think it's time for Pacific Rim soundtracks. Pacific Rim: The Black sounds somewhere between the Pacific Rim movies' soundtracks and the tense violin work from the 2009 Sherlock Holmes movie with RDJ and Jude Law, soundtrack by Hans Zimmer. Not particularly Australian, unfortunately.
Lego Stuff
Gotta merge the two submarine kits, and build the Emperor's Throne Room that I won at pinball at Pemmi-Con.

Whew, good job gang. Now that we've got our naming fix done let's check back in with what Zoosmell has been doing in our absence.
Tumblr media
EB: you can see me, right. EB: tell me what is wrong with this picture. TT: Sorry. I keep losing the wireless signal. TT: Must be the weather. TT: I would look for a stronger signal in another part of the house, but I'd rather not risk an encounter with my mother. TT: I battled through her cloud of gin and derision once already this evening. EB: haha, yeah I hear you. EB: ... EB: wait. what's going on? TT: What do you mean? EB: I was in my bedroom just a minute ago waiting for my copy of sburb to arrive. EB: and now i'm standing in my bathtub in the middle of the hallway and there's a weird machine in my living room. TT: Zoosmell, are you implying that a number of important events that have transpired today have been skipped over in order to arrive at the absurd situation of your bathtub sitting in the hallway, a place where one would not expect to find a bathtub? EB: uh, yeah, I guess? TT: Well in that case, i'm sure the author has a good reason for skipping what could have been 170 pages worth of tedious, yet humorous, captchalouging tomfoolery and setup. EB: haha, ok. EB: I'm going to hit that weird machine with my sledgehammer now.

hey! 🧡 for the ask game:
🎧 Headphones or earbuds?
🎤 Is there a song you know all the lyrics to?
🐶 Are you more of a dog person or a cat person?
earbuds all the way! the 'old fashioned' ones with wires though - I'd definitely lose the wireless ones or forget I'm wearing them and just get in the shower or something.
There are *several* songs I know all the lyrics to. I love lyrics, it's usually what I notice first about songs. Most of Green Day's music (I bet that's a surprise lol), but also basically any Five or Westlife song (and other 90s/early 00s boybands), Robbie Williams, Spice Girls, and I still know most of the lyrics to the songs on the Marshall Mathers LP - that album barely left my cd player and discman for AGES.
I like both but my dog is my best friend and I used to work as a dog walker and that was pretty close to my dream job. Even with the tiny terrors with an ego the size of Australia!
thanks for these!

3, 8 and 17 for the music asks if you'd like???
HELLO Sarah my love!!!!
3. a song outside of your usual genre
I don't normally like instrumental songs. I usually need words to really connect with music. But while writing my wireless, I knew I needed a classical music song for Drarry to dance to that would fit the vibe I wanted, so I turned to my irl best friend for help bc she knows a lot about classical music. She recommended a couple songs. I used both, and they're both beautiful, but this was my favorite of the two:
Brahms: Waltz in A-Flat major Op.39 No.15
It's absolutely lovely, and just really captured the feeling I imagined for the fic.
8. a song that speaks the words you couldn’t say
"You're On Your Own Kid" by Taylor Alison Swift
BRUHHHHH THAT SONGGGGGGGG "I hosted parties and starved my body like I'd be saved by a perfect kiss...'Cause through the pages turned and the bridges burned everything you lose is a step you take. So make the friendship bracelets take the moment and taste it you got no reason to be afraid."
I could've put the whole song here. It articulates SO much of how I felt for so much of my life. Taylor really fuckin went for it with that one.
17. a song that reminds you of a good time
"Fergalicious" by Fergie because I associate that song with driving around with my friend and rapping it lol.
Thanks again babe! 💛💛💛💛💛
Send me a music ask!

My partner is very good at destroying headphones. One time he severed his wired headphones in the door of a taxi. Another time he took them into the bathroom when he took a bath and the sound became tinny & warped.
He is also very good at losing things. Typically I can find whatever he has lost within seconds. Recently he lost his 'beans' - wireless earphones mimicking Airpods.
I found them under the pile of bedding I'd shoved in a corner of the bathroom because they wouldn't fit in the laundry basket.
Behold! The beans!

I'm sorry to wired earbud fans but I have been converted to wireless earbuds. These aren't even expensive high quality ones and they're so much better.
This is literally the longest lasting pair of earbuds I have had in my entire life (~5 months and still going), and I use them almost every day. I've bought 3$ earbuds, I've bought 20$ earbuds, both last 1 week to 6 weeks (if I'm lucky) before the wire breaks. And of that time about half is spent with sound that only works in one ear or I need to hold the wire in a specific position lest the sound give out. Earbuds with volume adjuster buttons on them are even worse, as the moment the wire starts to degrade the earbuds start sending signals not only to adjust the volume without you touching the buttons, but also to pause or skip songs, and even switch apps. Plus if you get up and leave your phone on the arm of the chair you won't rip out the earbuds and throw your phone onto the floor. At worst you disconnect for being outside of bluetooth range. There is also no wire to get tangled if you put it in your pocket. And this probably depends on your brand, but not once have the silicone tips come off by accident.
Now the wireless earbuds do have some issues, but not any that weren't worse with wired earbuds. The main one being that the sound quality and volume is inconsistent. I don't know if it's from a flaky connection or if there's something physically up with them, but sometimes for a few days they'll be really quiet so I have to have them at max volume to hear anything, or the sound will be static-y, but after a bit of messing around with them they always go back to working perfectly. Something I cannot say for wired earbuds, because once their sound goes there's no getting it back.
So the only real downside is that you have to charge them, but even then, for every 2-4 charges I'd have to buy brand new wired earbuds. Edit: I don't have experience with this but if you forget to put them in their case it would be easier to lose one. So if you lose things easily there is a second potential downside.
So overall I strongly recommend wireless earbuds.
DISCLAIMER: this does NOT mean I support removing headphone jacks from phones.

Love the comic!! I was wondering if you have any tips for people who want to get into digital art? What program do you use?
Hope you have a good day :D
oOF so that's hard cause it's been kind of a really long journey and a lot of the stuff I've picked up has been from watching youtube, looking stuff up, and only recently a few classes here and there. So I don't have any TIPS but I CAN walk you through my digital art journey, if you will. (also if you don't wanna read this all: I use Clip Studio Paint Pro, and a Wacom Intuos Pro)
SO. my first tablet was a cheap, tiny square thing that cost 30 dollars and connected to my labtop via a usb cable. It only lasted a few years. It was a Huion drawing tablet, don't know what kind but a brief search shows they're still selling tables for around 30-50 dollars and they look WAY better than the one I started with. so if you wanna start digital drawing but don't wanna buy a super expensive tablet at first in case you don't like it, I'd suggest Huion.
NEXT I used a free digital art program called Fire Alpaca for a while, and since I was new to digital art I didn't really need all the fancy brushes and options that expensive digital art programs had because I just needed to familiarize myself with the basics first.
After a while I wanted an upgrade, but adobe products are super expensive and slowed down my cheap broken laptop. Eventually I ended up finding Clip Studio Paint Pro, which I bought for like 40 dollars (I think it's 50 dollars now) and has been my faithful companion ever since. It helps that it's made specifically for digital illustration/manga creation too, since I like making comics.
somewhere along the line my Huion tablet started sporadically cutting out and losing pen pressure so I asked my mom for a better one, since I'd proven that I was serious about digital art, and I ended up getting a Wacom Intuous Pro for christmas (also a tablet without a screen, I've found from using others ipads that I kind of hate screen tablets haha)
WHICH SURPRISED ME cause I thought they were WAYY too expensive. That's the tablet I still use today but I wouldn't suggest buying it, the charging port broke multiple times and after the warranty expired there wasn't much I could do about it, so I had to switch to using the wireless option and charging the battery via a different battery charger I bought on amazon and the whole thing was very annoying and BAD, I made do cause I can't afford a new tablet but the charging port breaking is kind of a big fucking deal :/ \
anyway thank you for your interest and giving me the chance ot ramble haha
AH SORRY I THOUGHT I POSTED THIS THE DAY I GOT IT. My bad i saved it as a draft instead haha.

The thing is, there's a potential halfway-decent job where I can actually use a social connection (*gasp!*) to improve my odds of at least reaching the interview stage, but it's an office thing where I'll be a lot more easily bored than I am right now. So if it actually got to the point of GETTING the job I'd want a phone with a good battery so I could at least listen to shit while I'm working so I don't lose my mind.
My phone right now is about three and a half years old, and it's 100% a budget phone. My personal meticulousness with this sort of thing has kept it in pretty darn good shape for its age. But I think either the battery or the whole phone should be replaced soon, and if there's a chance for that job I might be better off trying to get a phone that will last a long time between charges. But, you know, without paying TOO much for it.
Anyway I'm looking up phones trying to make sure I'm informed when that decision needs to be made and holy shit my standards for what I want in a phone are so different from what the phone reviewers seem to want. Camera? Picture quality? Why should I care? I rarely even take pictures. Quick-charging? No. Fuck no. That kills batteries faster, I don't want to use that. Bright screen? My phone right now is literally on the lowest brightness possible. I don't give a shit about your maximum brightness. WIRELESS charging?? Why?????
Just give me a thing that has a good battery, can do basic web browsing, has a headphone jack, and can let me listen to stuff. And I guess it should be able to handle Pathbuilder and Libby but those aren't exactly heavy apps to run, I doubt there will be a problem there. I guess that means we'll be going budget again? But with more options, since the current phone was just Virizon going "please please please get off your incredibly old dumbphone we want to stop supporting, we will give you a free smartphone if you just STOP" and I didn't actually get to choose which one.

Wired vs Wireless Earphones
Before I start I'd like to declare that none of the images here have any correlation with brands I support. They just happened to be there when I searched for the products on the internet.
If you have any sense credibility in a social setting, you know to use earphones in public spaces. Whether it'd be listening to music, watching videos, or gaming, those around you would greatly appreciate it if you could keep whatever you're listening to, to yourself.
With miracles such as the advancement of technology, we now have the tools necessary to redirect our device audio directly into our ear holes.
The big question is:
What device should I use?
In this post, I will be issuing my opinion on the matter. Feel free to add in your thoughts as well.
Wired
So wired earphones are basically the millenials of earphones, in that they generally existed first but now coexist with the next generation of earphones.
The only reason I can think of that you may not recognise the distinct feature of a wired earphone which is crucial to the argument, is because you do not know what an earphone is.
Tumblr media
This is a wired earphone. The jack tends to differ for different brands of devices because of corporate greed, but that is a subject that I will get into shortly.
Here's a list of things that I like about wired earphones:
Low latency
Easy to tell when connected
Typically comes with built in mic
Hard to lose
Here's a list of things I don't like about them:
That moment when you move too far away from your device and the earphones tackle you to the ground
Wires may get tangled when you keep them
Difficult to use while on the move, due to loose hanging wire
Needs adapter for multiple devices
Takes up extra port/jack
Remember earlier when I mentioned corporate greed? These last 2 points are the result of said greed.
If you are unaware, in not so recent times, smartphones have began losing their earphone jacks.
Now why would producers leave out such an important component, crucial for using wired earphones? Was it an accident? Did they just forget?
No. It was for revenue.
There is a certain philosphy in product design:
"If there is no problem to fix, create a new one, then fix it"
Despite smartphones spending years becoming more efficient and user-friendly, producers felt the need to obtain more methods of squeezing consumers dry of their money.
Their response to the need for increasing their profit margin was removing earphone jacks.
Why?
Well this segments perfectly into our next topic!
Wireless Earphones
Tumblr media
These bad boys are similar to our wired earphones, but this time without the wires (who would have guessed).
They're typically connected via bluetooth or some other wireless voodoo.
So how do these doohickeys relate to my rant about the corporate vision of generating infinite revenue from a finite pool?
Let's take a look at a few things I'm not really fond of:
You have to charge them
Easily losable
Latency varies
Costs like 50 kilograms of my soul
That last point plays into my previous argument. The smartphone companies want your money, and they do so by removing the earphone jack, and moving it to the charging port.
It basically accomplishes the feat of not allowing you to charge your phone while wearing wired earphones at the same time.
Notice how it only affects your usage of wired earphones
Mhm. This whole roundabout game of goose was the developer's "amazing scheme" to get you to buy wireless earphones. Smartphones are now designed to push consumer bias towards buying the more expensive product.
Now it's up to you how you wish to factor this information into your consideration of Wired vs Wireless Earphones, but I would be lying if I said that this didn't affect my opinion of the latter product slightly.
Anyways, now that my rant is over, I think it's a good time to touch on the parts of wireless earphones I actually like:
More portable
Frees up port/jack space
I guess they look cooler
Conclusion
The strength of wireless earphones lie in its convenience, because removing the wires allow for a generally less clunky product. However, my preference still tends towards wired ones, because I play rhythm games which require the low latency they provide.
The gripes I have with wired earphones only tend to come from transportation, because the wires can get in the way if not careful. When running I find myself having to forego music for an easier running experience, which can affect motivation variably.
Overall, my lifestyle at the moment leads to my preference siding towards wired earphones. This does not mean that you should choose wired earphones, it is vital to consider your listening needs before choosing a product. This post only represent my thoughts and opinions, which may help you make a more informed decision.
Also please do consider:

Hey! Love your stories so much I just had to ask! Do you have any favorite drarry authors/stories? I sometimes compare the quality of other stories to ROA (oops!) because ROA is just that good. My personal favorites are ROA (of course!), the Foundations Series (saras_girl), the ordeal of being known (louisfake), denouement (the_never_was), Good to Me (And I'd Be So Good to You) (AWickedMemory), and To Hurt and Heal (cassisluna). Have you read these? Have a wonderful day! :)
Thank you, so glad you’ve enjoyed my stories! And thank you for so patiently waiting for a reply. I haven’t been online much in the past couple of weeks. Unfortunately I haven’t read any of your recs, but I’m always happy to add another fic to my to-read list.
I did a rec post a few months ago, but I’ll post an updated version now. The Skyhawke Archives appear to be down, which is crushing news. I’ve had to update a lot of the links.
So here are my favourite Drarry fanfics:
And We Are At Our Apogee (PG-13) by angelgazing
Summary: Draco wanted revenge, but it didn't work out that way.
My notes: Californian beaches, supermarkets, road trips, and a bittersweet ending.
-
A Reckless State of Mind (T) by Lomonaaeren
Summary: Draco is a Psyche-Diver, and his newest patient is Auror Potter, who’s been a pathological liar for over a year—and has just tried to violently end his own life.
Notes: The plot alone guarantees inclusion on this list. Probably the most creative fic I’ve ever read, and the twists and turns will keep you guessing.
-
Berlin, In the Year of Our Lord (PG) by Are
Summary: Harry is a green-tea addict. Draco stalks him.
Notes: Probably my all-time favourite fic, along with Blue Vase. It’s sparse and minimal and I love that writing style.
-
Blue Vase (M) by ivyblossom
Summary: Let’s pretend.
Notes: Draco finds an amnesiac Harry and befriends him, pretending they were once lovers. It’s pensive, short, and bittersweet.
-
The Boy Who Only Lived Twice (E) by lettered
Summary: Harry Potter is an Unspeakable. Draco Malfoy is the wizard who shagged him. Adventure! Intrigue! Secret identities, celebrities, spies! It's all right here, folks.
Notes: Action-heavy fics are damn hard to write, but lettered nails it. The action scenes are breakneck speed, the conversations are threaded with double meaning, and even the silences are tense.
-
Draco in Darkness (T) by Plumeria47.
Summary: Following an accident in his seventh year, Draco loses his eyesight.
Notes: This is one of the first fics I ever read (when it was over on FF in 2003) so it’s probably here just for nostalgia points alone. I read it when I was a kid and just thought it was a lovely golden fairytale, the best romance I’d ever read in my (very short, thus far) life. I love reading it again, even years later as an adult when I can see the tarnish on it; the things my childhood eyes didn’t notice. I don’t care. It’s my soft and fuzzy comfort fic.
-
The Flesh is Frail (NC-17) by wildestranger
Summary: None
Notes: Draco has injuries from curses and spells, and Harry keeps him company. Draco is angry; Harry is stubborn. They argue their way into a grudging relationship. It’s a short read and well worth your ten minutes.
-
Good-bye to Yesterday (NC-17) by furiosity
Summary: Draco felt ready to face even a million years in Azkaban as long as it meant that at the end of it all, he would make Potter pay.
Notes: It’s not a dark fic, but it certainly dips in and out of the shadows. If you like your romance to be sharp as a razor and bitter as black coffee, give it a read.
-
Hymn to Color (PG) by Lomonaaeren
Summary: Months after Draco cast a curse that took Harry’s eyesight, Harry is still trying to come to terms with it. Draco still wanted forgiveness, which was probably the problem.
Notes: Probably my very inadequate idea of “fluff”. It’s a quiet, introspective fic. Draco and Harry are well-written.
-
Kings among runaways (PG) by enderxenocide.
Summary: Later, the toast will be slightly overcooked, Draco will burn the eggs, and there will be another fist fight in-between the living room and the front door, but they’ll eat breakfast with second-hand plates and Draco’s great-grandmother’s silverware.
Notes: Dreamy descriptions, abstract scenes, and the characters are lovingly delineated. Beautiful writing.
-
On Broken Glass (PG-13) by coffeejunkii
Summary: After the final battle, Draco is holding the shards that are left of his and Harry’s life.
Notes: Established relationship. Harry’s forgetful and seems to suffer both short-term and long-term memory loss; Draco stays by his side through six years of post-war amnesia. Very short, just a tiny ficlet. There’s sequels (in bite-size pieces) but I prefer to read the first ficlet and leave it there.
-
Paper Dolls (M) by cupiscent
Summary: In the final year of the War, Draco gets a letter, makes a choice and pays the price.
Notes: Short, succinct, and packs a punch. No character deaths, in case the summary has you feeling nervous.
-
Portrait (PG-13) by Silent Blast
Summary: None.
Notes: Dorian Grey, but Drarry. Of course it’s going to be good.
-
Shattered (NC-17) by femmequixotic
Summary: One damned accident involving one too-lucky curse, and suddenly you'd think he was five again, with their Harry, be carefuls and their quick Levitating charms ready the instant the potion gives way and his rebelling hands lose hold of whatever's in their grasp.
Notes: Draco’s an artist. Harry’s intrigued by his sculptures and paintings.
-
Snatch (PG-13) by didntyoupotter
Summary: Harry is comatose, Hermione and Ron aren’t much help, and Draco isn’t sure about anything anymore.
Notes: The opening scene fools you into thinking this will be a light read with a streak of good humour. Don’t fall for it. By the third act, you’ll be hanging onto every word and feeling a lot of emotions. Also, back in the day, this was one of the Draco/Harry fics. Everyone knew of it. Pay your respects to your fandom history and read this beloved classic.
-
The Stages of Acceptance (T) by Lomonaaeren.
Summary: Harry, already happily married to Ginny, receives the news that he's Draco's mate. Law and custom don't give him the option of ignoring the news. The stages of his reaction, one by one.
Notes: This is not a romance, and I love that the author just casually chucks all the Veela tropes in the bin and says “nope”. In Lomonaaeren’s own words, this fic is more practical than romantic. Harry is unfamiliar with the Veela concepts and hates the very idea of being “shackled” to someone; he rejects Draco at once. Draco is miserable and lonely. They do eventually come to understand each other better, but it’s a huge struggle with lots of setbacks. The general air of pessimism and misery does make the small glimpses of compassion and empathy feel so well-earned. I love a fic that rations out its happiness.
-
The Stately Homes of Wiltshire (E) by waspabi
Summary: Malfoy Manor has mould, dry rot and an infestation of unusually historical poltergeists. Harry Potter is on the case.
Notes: This one needs no introduction. The writing is polished, the characterisation perfect, and the dialogue is fun. I love the humour woven throughout it.

Then Comes a Mist and a Weeping Rain (E) by faithwood.
Summary: It always rains for Draco Malfoy. Metaphorically. And literally. Ever since he had accidentally Conjured a cloud. A cloud that's ever so cross.
Notes: Another one that most of us know. It’s a lighthearted and fun read.
-
Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow (M) by novembersnow
Summary: In the war-torn years after Hogwarts, one man has no knowledge of his yesterdays.
Notes: Another classic back in the feverish heyday of the Harry Potter fandom, when books were still being released and everyone had worked themselves up into a shipping frenzy. And no wonder this fic was an instant hit. Draco has lost all his memories and Harry’s investigating as an Auror, but the longer you read, the more you start questioning everything. Good twists and turns that lead to a tender ending.
-
Turn by Saras_Girl
Summary: One good turn always deserves another. Apparently.
Notes: An inevitable inclusion on any favourites list. I think my favourite thing about it is the characterisation. Everyone is so well-rounded; the characters are brought to life and feel like old friends. All their habits, styles, mannerisms, even the way they walk or talk. While I love everyone in this fic, I have to admit that Blaise is just amazing. Of all the thousands of Blaises imagined by fanfic writers, I love this one the best. “Old bean” indeed.
-
Under the Ivy (PG-13) by coffeejunkii
Summary: It is impressive how much you can learn about someone by simply sharing a few rooms. They don’t spend time together, not really, but Harry still knows that Malfoy prefers raspberry jam over strawberry, that he hums along to the Wireless when he thinks no one is around, and that his leg is bothering him more than usual when the temperatures drop below freezing.
Notes: Another old, old favourite of mine. It’s like snuggling into a soft blanket. Remus owns a cottage and Harry moves in after the war. Later, Remus lets a room to Draco, who is an outcast after the war and has limited housing options. Harry isn’t happy at first with the new lodger, but he eventually warms up to Draco. A slow and gentle romance.
-
Vale Sanare (M) by rurounihime
Summary: Draco’s world gains a new component, just when he thought he’d sorted everything out.
Notes: London nightclubs, one-night-stands, loud music and lonely nights. Draco has seizures due to a curse from the war, and the seizures have led to a fear of intimacy. Short and sweet.
-
The Way Down (T) by lettered
Summary: Malfoy’s all, “Come out of there,” the way you say to a cat who is badly behaved. And Harry’s all like, “No, what, I’m a hermit! And I have a chest-monster! And I am crazy magically powerful!” and Malfoy’s all, “We all have problems, bub.” (thoughtfully) “You are crazy though. I’ll give you that.”
Notes: I just adore this fic. The fic starts well-grounded, giving you a solid backstory and matter-of-fact context, but as it goes on, it slowly unravels into dreamy scenes, lush settings, and repeated motifs. It’s just such a beautiful story.
-
When Love beckons to you, follow him (PG-13) by megyal
Summary: Draco wakes up, lost, somewhere in a forest. He has no idea where he is or how he got there. As he is blundering around trying to find his way home, he hears Harry's voice in his head, telling him what to do.
Notes: I generally like my fics to be bittersweet or with a bit of heartache — but this fic is just a little cloud of softness. If you need something light and lovely without being syrupy-sweet, this is a good choice!
-
The World of the Living (M) by fourth_rose
Summary: A traumatised war hero and a convicted criminal under the roof of an eccentric journalist make for a rather odd ensemble, but Luna has never had a problem with oddities as long as they make sense.
Notes: The story is told from Luna’s perspective, which gives everything a lovely dreamy quality. She takes in a couple of strays after the war — first Harry, who is avoiding his other friends and has quit his Auror job — and then she offers a room to Draco right after his trial. Draco is rude, angry, and ungrateful; Harry is churlish, withdrawn, and moody. Luna doesn’t seem to mind in the slightest, and over the course of the next few months, her house guests slowly warm up to each other.
-
Voices From the Fog (E) by noeon
Summary: After years of running away, Harry crosses paths with an all-too familiar face and follows him to Amsterdam.
Notes: Harry drifts across Europe, trying to forget the war. He ends up in a woodworking shop in Amsterdam, alongside a moody Draco. Atmospheric settings and solid characterisation.

i present you: the product of an ex-theater-kid turned grishaverse stan zoning out for an hour and 45 mins in class this morning
i recommend playing the song (movie version) while reading along for a fun time
the song “96,000”, if it were “30 million kruge” (the part of soc where kaz tells the others about the ice court job)
(without the lyrics changed because i’m not willing to put that much effort into this i just assigned lyrics as the song played on loop in my head all morning)
Kaz:
Ninety-six thousand!
Nina:
Damn!
Kaz:
Ninety-six thousand!
Jesper:
Dollars? Holler!
Kaz:
Ninety-six thousand!
Wylan:
That's a lotta spray cans
Kaz:
Ninety-six thousand!
Jesper:
Yo
If I won the lotto tomorrow
Well, I know I wouldn't bother goin' on no spendin' spree
I pick a business school and pay the entrance fee!
Then maybe if you're lucky, you'll stay friends with me!
I'll be a businessman, richer than [Wylan’s] daddy!
Tiger Woods and I on the links, and he's my caddy!
My money's makin' money, I'm goin' from po' to mo' dough!
Keep the bling, I want the brass ring, like Frodo!
Matthias:
Oh no, here goes Mr. Braggadocio
Next thing you know, you're lying like Pinocchio...
Nina:
Yo, if you're scared of the bull, stay out the rodeo!
Jesper:
Yo, I got more flows than Obi-Wan Kenobio
Kaz:
Ooh, you better stop rappin', you not ready
It's gonna get hot and heavy
And you already sweaty...
Nina:
Yo-yo-yo! Yo!
Matthias:
Yo, yo! I'm sorry is that an answer?
Shut up, go home and pull ya damn pants up!
Kaz:
As for you, Mr. Frodo of the Shire...
Jesper:
What?
Kaz:
96 G's ain't enough to retire
Jesper:
C'mon, I'll have enough to knock your ass off its axis!
Kaz:
You'll have a knapsack full of jack after taxes
Nina:
Ninety-six thousand!
Matthias:
Ay, alabanza!
Nina:
Ninety-six thousand!
Inej:
No me diga!
Nina:
Ninety-six thousand!
Wylan:
I never win shit!
Nina:
Ninety-six thousand!
Jesper:
For real, though, imagine how it would feel goin' real slow
Down the highway of life with no regrets
And no breakin' your neck for respect or a paycheck
For real, though, I'll take a break from the wheel and we'll throw
The biggest block party, everybody here
A weekend when we can breathe, take it easy
Rotty/Specht:
Yo! Ma, it's me, check my tickets!
Nina:
Check one two three
What would you do with ninety-six G's...
Inej:
Who me?
Nina:
I mean if it's just between you and me...
Inej:
Esa pregunta es tricky!
Nina/Wylan:
I know!
Matthias:
With ninety-six G's
I'd start my life with a brand new lease
Atlantic City with a Malibu Breeze
Nina:
And a brand new weave!
Jesper:
Or maybe just bleach...
Matthias:
Y'all are freaks
Kaz:
Yo, I'm just sayin'...
It's silly when we get into these crazy hypotheticals
You really want some bread? Then go ahead create a set of goals
And cross them off the list as you pursue 'em
And with those ninety-six, I know precisely what I'm doin'
Inej:
What'chu doin'?
Kaz:
What'm I doin? What'm I doin?
It takes half of that cash just to save my ass from financial ruin
Sonny can keep the coffee brewin'
I'll spend a few on you
'Cause the only room with a view is a room with you in it
And I could give Abuela Claudia the rest of it
Just fly me down to Puerto Plata, I'll make the best of it!
You really love this business?
Wylan:
No
Kaz:
Tough, Merry Christmas
You're now the youngest tycoon in Washington Hiznits!
Wylan:
Yo!
With ninety-six thousand, I'd finally fix housin'
Give the barrio computers and wireless web browsin'
Your kids are livin' without a good edjumication
Change the station, teach 'em about gentrification
The rent is escalatin'
Crows:
What?!
Wylan:
The rich are penetratin'
Crows:
What?!
Wylan:
We pay our corporations when we should be demonstratin'
Crows:
What?!
Wylan:
What about immigration?
Crows:
What?!
Wylan:
Politicians be hatin'
Crows:
What?!
Wylan:
Racism in this nation's gone from latent to blatant
Crows:
Ooh!
Wylan:
I'll cash my ticket and picket, invest in protest
Never lose my focus till the city takes notice
And you know this man! I'll never sleep
Because the ghetto has a million promises for me to keep!
Crows:
Woo!
Jesper:
You're so cute
Wylan:
I was just thinking off the top of my head
Kaz:
Ninety-six K: Go
Inej:
If I win the lottery, you'll never see me again
Jesper:
Damn, we only jokin', stay broke then
Inej:
I'll be downtown
Get a nice studio, get out of the barrio
If I
Win the
Lottery
You'll wonder where
I've been
Jesper, accompanying Inej:
For real, though
Imagine how it would feel goin' real slow
Down the highway of life with no regrets
And no breakin' your neck for respect or a paycheck...
Inej, accompanying Jesper:
I'll be downtown
See you around
If I win the lottery
You won't see a lot of me!
I'll be downtown
See you around!
Crows:
Why-oh!
Inej:
Around!
Crows:
Why-oh!
Jesper:
For real though
I'll take a break from the wheel
And we'll throw
The biggest block party
Everybody here
A weekend when we can breathe, take it easy
For real though
Imagine how it would feel
Goin' real slow
Down the highway of life with no regrets
And no breakin' your neck
For respect or a paycheck
For real though
I'll take a break from the wheel
And we'll throw
The biggest block party
Everybody here
A weekend when we can breathe
Take it easy
Kaz, with Jesper and Inej:
Yo, it's silly when we get into these crazy hypotheticals

And with the dollah dollah
