Meet Aether Beyond the Binary Contributor Terra P. Waters

Another day, another AETHER BEYOND THE BINARY creator to shine the spotlight on!

Before we get to that, just a note: hi, I’m Nina Waters, the lead editor, the person running this campaign, and the one who writes all these blog posts. I’ll be traveling for the next four days (Friday, Jan 12 – Monday, Jan 15) to vend for Duck Prints Press at Arisia in Boston. As a result, I will be slower to answer messages, reply to comments, and post updates (I’m going to try to post one, but I’m not sure I’ll have time). I appreciate your patience while I’m less available. And if by some chance, you’re attending the con, make sure you come and say hi! I’ll be at table D14 in the dealer’s room.

About Terra: Terra is a scientist by day who lives in the Pacific Northwest with her family. She has been writing fiction as long as she can remember, and has always told her partner of 17 years that if she wasn’t a scientist, she would be an author. During grad school, she discovered fanfiction and immediately began writing her own. After many years and several fandoms (including Teen Wolf, Hawaii Five-0, and Stranger Things), she returned to writing original fiction. To date, she has self-published two novellas in a 90s-nostalgia polyamory comedy series and has drafted two YA/NA sci-fi novels. When not doing science or writing, you can find Terra indulging her yarn addiction and knitting.

An Interview with Terra P. Waters

What motivates you to create?

My love for the ideas!

How did you pick the name you create under?

I’ve been using the name “pterawaters” since 2009, when I joined fanfiction.net. “Ptera” came from an old gaming character I had, “Ptera the Pterrible,” and “Waters” was a last name I really liked the sound of. For my original writing, I decided to go with a more conventional version of the name. I moved the P from the front of my name to the middle initial as an homage to my fannish writing name.

What do you consider to be your strengths as a creator?

My ability to brainstorm scenarios and know how to outline the plot from there. Longer-form works, where I get to dig into the character motivations and development. World building.

What do you consider to be your weaknesses as a creator?

Short stories, creating characters who serve the story I want to tell, adding enough description around the dialog and plot.

When and why did you begin creating?

I’ve been writing since I was a kid, and even took a lot of creative writing classes during college (aside from my science major). I get a lot of joy out of thinking “what if…” and then turning that idea into a story.

Are you a pantser, a planner, or a planster? What’s your process look like?

I’m most often a planner. I like to outline the story beats of any project before I write. Sometimes, I’ll be more of a plantser. I’ll write 1-2k words of an idea before I do the rest of the outline, so I can see if it’s an idea worth planning out further.

Which of your own creations is your favorite? Why?

I wrote a story called “Entanglement” that was part of a long Stranger Things fanwork series. It’s absolutely my favorite thing I’ve ever written, and I’m excited to get to the point where I can incorporate the rewritten version into my sci-fi series.

What are your favorite tropes?

Polyamory, First times/Getting together, Forced proximity (cuddling for warmth, only one bed), Soulmate AUs, Omegaverse, Fake relationship, Friends to Lovers

What are your favorite snacks and/or drinks to consume while creating?

I like herbal tea, candy, or a crunchy snack like popcorn. I’ve recently gotten into eating roasted lentils, which is a nice substitute for not being able to eat nuts anymore.

What is your “dream project” – the thing you’d see as the culmination of your work as a creator?

I want to finish a series of at least 4 novels and have them all in print.

When you look at your “career” as a creator, what achievement would you most like to reach – what, if it happened or has already happened, would/did make you go “now – now I’m a success!”?

I would like to have at least one full-length novel printed and for people to actually buy it!

Tell us about your pet(s).

I have two orange cats, Gadget (the chonk) and Gizmo (anxiety in animal form).

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

Finish the thing. My writing got so much better once I forced myself to finish fan works so I could put them up for other people to read. Practicing the first part of writing a story without practicing how to write the end leaves you never finishing anything.

As Victoria leaned as close as she could to the wall, she asked distractedly, “What do you mean?”

“Obviously, it’s a fake,” they said, mulling over the problem in their head. “Sanderson has wanted my place on the admissions committee since he joined the department.”

“What if it’s not a fake?” Victoria made a tiny, excited noise. “What if this is early Aether Age work? What if this is a secret that’s been buried for almost a thousand years?”

Sasha’s heart swooped at the thought. “We have to find out what that inscription says.”

L - Say something genuinely nice about a character who isn’t one of your faves (chars you’re neutral on are fair game, as are chars you dislike)

All right, let’s go with Kitty for this one. One aspect of her character I genuinely like is her interest in weird, gory things. I think the moment she became fascinated with Maddocks’s foot (or lack thereof) was the first time I could truly relate to her. That could have been me, 100 %, and I’m sure everyone around me reacted the way the other ghosts did when I told them about that one time I dissected mummified bat skulls under a microscope. So yeah, I love this part of Kitty's character.

N - Name three things you wish you saw more or in your main fandom (or a fandom of choice)

1. More positivity rather than discourse. Every now and then people post about ships or characters they dislike, and I just wish rather than complaining about why there’s so much content for them, they’d use that energy to support the creators who actually make the content they want to see. There’s no better way to encourage a writer / artist / gifmaker than to leave them feedback. Which brings me to point 2.

2. More interaction with fics, art and gifsets. Likes are all well and good but it's reblogs that get works seen and comments that motivate creators to make more. Fandom thrives on interaction so I'd like to encourage everyone to reblog instead of like something and leave at least a little heart or random thought in the tags of the fic, art or gifset to let the creator know they liked it.

3. More gen fics. Granted, I don’t read many fics because I'm always afraid of other people’s ideas influencing my own writing but I get the impression that a lot of Ghosts fics focus on romance (some my own included) and I’d love to see more found family type stories that focus on friendships.

P - Invent a random AU for any fandom (we always need more ideas)

I always struggle with inventing AUs because Coffee Shop AUs and the like don’t really do it for me. For me, an AU only works if it retains at least some of the core elements of the show, and that makes it quite difficult to come up with an AU for something like Ghosts.

But I have recently thought about the potential of a Primeval AU. If you’re unfamiliar with the show, it’s about prehistoric animals wandering into modern time through so-called anomalies. So there's dinosaurs and mammoths roaming the streets, but every now and then humans from the past appear in the present as well. And that’s where our beloved ghosts would come in:

Fanny still gets pushed out of a window by George but instead of landing on the hard ground, she falls through an anomaly and lands in a lake

after Thomas gets shot he staggers through an anomaly and survives thanks to modern medicine

the arrow that hits Pat vanishes through an anomaly before it can reach him. Pat ushers the kids into the bus before he investigates the sparkly thing and gets lost in time

Robin runs from the bear straight into modern Britain

Mary flees into an anomaly when she tries to run away from the witch hunters

Humphrey's anomaly opens below him when he comes out of his hiding place

Julian vanishes from his time while hiding in someone else's bedroom closet - half-naked, of course

Kitty probably went through an anomaly while playing hide and seek

The Captain stumbles upon an anomaly during maneuvers and checks it out (there might just be a possibility Havers does the same in Africa and the two of them to meet again in the future)

the Plague Ghosts cause quite a ruckus when they show up in modern times because, well, they’re infected with the plague. By the time Jemima arrives a few months later, safety measures for this sort of thing have been implemented

Alison and Mike still inherit Button House in this AU. When the government attempts to take the house from them because they need a place for all these misplaced people that’s far away from everywhere else, they strike a deal with them: the Coopers get to keep the house and the government pays them to let the people stay, thus enabling them to repair it

at some point, the government brings them a mammoth - a literal mammoth. Robin is over the moon. Alison and Mike are not. Fanny hopes the next animal will be a sabre-toothed cat.

7. what character did you begin to hate not because of canon but because how how the fandom acts about them?

I'm not doing a great job of choosing violence today, lol, but the truth is it's really hard to think of any characters in Dragon Age that I hate. At worst I'm indifferent, and at best I'm way too stubborn to let other people ruin something I like.

25. common fandom complaint that you’re sick of hearing

I mentioned this in a previous answer but: it is kind of frustrating when I write about something I think is cool or interesting, like an overarching theme to a story or character, or maybe something about a story that subverts expectations, and it gets a bunch of reblogs with tags about how that's cool but there's no way it was intentional because BioWare is too stupid to have done anything good on purpose.

And look, I am not saying that this series doesn't warrant criticism. I'm in favor of being critical of media generally, especially stuff we love. I am not trying to shut down criticism. I am also very aware that sometimes fans find depths to things that the creators never dreamed of. Trust me, I'm a Red vs. Blue fan. :P That said... sometimes, creators do do a cool thing on purpose. The video game industry is a hot disaster; nevertheless, there are writers and artists and designers and developers who are passionate about creating worlds and characters and telling stories. They're rarely perfect and sometimes they fuck up and sometimes everybody isn't on the same page and the meanings get muddled. But also, sometimes they execute something really cool.

And there's a point at which it feel less like criticism and more like... "I can't reblog something positive about this series without putting something negative on it that conveys my searing disdain." It starts to feel almost... performative? I'm sure that's not always the case. But it's enough of a pattern to be noticeable. And at the end of the day, you know what, this is tumblr, I can't control what other people add to my posts and I've mostly given up trying, but it is kind of annoying, so I will complain about it!

A/N: Me? Writing salt fics for BNHA even though I dropped it, like, two years ago? It's more likely than you think.

I still care about Kirideku and Tododeku, but I also wrote this to vent for the most part. I can guarantee you that all my BNHA fics will be salt lmao.

Admittedly, this fic is not exactly romantic, but I did not write this in a platonic view, personally. This ship means a lot to me and I just need to see more of Kirishima to be done with B/akugo.

I'm not sure if this will be out of character since I dropped BNHA, so I'm already warning you. Either way, I hope you enjoy!

“Are you sure you wouldn’t rather study with someone smarter than me?”

“Yeah, of course! You’re my role model!”

“A-Ah, really?”

“Yeah! You always know what to do, especially in dire situations. Like our exams,” Kirishima grins like he’s the literal sun right in front of Izuku. “That’s what makes you so manly!”

Izuku only laughs with reddened cheeks. “You’re too nice, Kirishima-kun!”

“You’re the most skilled and smartest person I know, Midoriya. I’m not exaggerating.”

With how sweet Kirishima sounds now, Izuku’s face grows hotter, unable to deny his friend’s compliments. Not to mention how ungrateful that is.

“Thanks, Kirishima-kun.” As he nervously looks around, the boys surrounded by books and notebooks alike on his bed, besides the countless All Mights watching over them, Izuku plays with his hands and his pencil. “B-But what about Kacchan? I thought you guys usually studied together.”

Much to his surprise, his upbeat classmate’s smile immediately drops at the mention of Katsuki. Kirishima probably notices it since he masks his dread with a smirk.

“Nah. He’s not exactly the best teacher,” the red-haired teen clarifies. “I may be hard, literally speaking, but my head hurt for two days straight. I’m surprised I was even able to get through the theoretical exam like that.”

Izuku doesn’t laugh, despite Kirishima’s jokey tone. The former can still find the pain in the latter’s red eyes.

“Yeah…” Izuku says awkwardly. “Kacchan can be… a handful.”

“Tell me about it.” This time, Kirishima sounds bitter.

Izuku gulps, for some reason. Maybe because he’s never seen his classmate in this state before. Kirishima is probably the nicest guy he’s ever known, besides Uraraka. Kirishima seems to be the kind of person that doesn’t let other people get to him, that holds no resentments. Hence why he was always eager to befriend Katsuki.

As Izuku remains silent, Kirishima sighs in defeat.

“Honestly, I don’t even know why I try. Bakugo is just… he’s such an asshole,” he vents, “for literally no reason. Like, he treats everyone like crap, but even though it might seem like he respects me, I’m still just his personal punchbag. And maybe that’s my fault, I dunno. I must’ve thought, ‘oh, he seems cool, maybe if I prove to him that he doesn’t have to be a jerk all the time, then we can be friends!’.” Kirishima only sounds more and more frustrated. “He hits me, he constantly insults me, he never calls me by my name… after everything we’ve been through, after everything I’ve done for him, I thought things would change, y’know? But Bakugo is still the same guy who calls me Shitty Hair. And why my hair of all things?! It’s my brand!”

His cheeks are as red as his spiky hair, which is now smoothed down. Yet his flushed face is not endearing here, as Kirishima’s hardened fingers grab some of his hair, as if wanting to rip it off.

If Izuku isn’t seeing things, it might as well look like Kirishima is crying.

Although the latter is usually open, he has never been this… vulnerable before. He has never shown such strong emotions like this, if not when Katsuki was kidnapped. Otherwise, you’d look at Kirishima and not believe there’s anything tormenting him, but now Izuku knows better.

(And he hates to admit that this sight, this situation… is very familiar.)

“Kirishima-kun,” Izuku calls him, as his scarred hands gently take Kirishima’s solid arms, abandoning the pencil and all the papers the students were reading. “There’s absolutely nothing wrong with you. You’re the coolest person in class. You have a good heart, you’re a great example of a hero to us. You’re my role model, too.”

Kirishima blushes, now flattered. Some tears end up rolling down his face, and he dries them with his sleeve, his quirk likely quieting down.

“I’m sorry Kacchan made you feel like that,” Izuku says rather sadly. “I know how it is to be his punchbag.”

Admittedly, he didn’t mean to add that last part.

But now it’s too late, as Kirishima appears to be on alert.

“You mean, like… you guys aren’t rivals?” He questions. “Or even childhood friends like everyone says?”

“He’s not my friend,” Izuku tightens his voice, regretting it when Kirishima shivers, so he adds, quietly, “he never was.”

The air around them feels heavier on their shoulders, a painfully familiar environment for Izuku.

“He… He tried to kill you in All Might’s class,” Kirishima reminds grimly, like he’s trying to pick the puzzles himself, and probably feeling stupid for not doing it before.

Izuku nods, head lowered.

“... he did worse than that,” he mutters.

“Worse?”

“Much worse.”

“Like what?” Kirishima begins to sound angry, but not at Izuku, as far as he’s concerned.

The green-eyed boy, in contrast, is completely closed off now. He feels empty.

“When we were little, I could never stand close to him because he would literally blow my face off,” Izuku narrates. “Since then, he’s called me useless, worthless, a damn nerd, a waste of space…” He doesn’t cry at all. “He would also pick on other kids, and I was always there to stand up for them. But since no one looked after me back then… I was the one who got the worst of it.”

Although he doesn’t look at his classmate, Izuku can sense the rage coming from Kirishima, even if the latter tries to hide it.

The moment Kirishima opens his mouth, Izuku dares to worsen the heavy environment.

“... then he told me to kill myself.”

Inflamed silence.

“He did WHAT?” Kirishima reacts.

Izuku, on the other hand, shrugs and replies, “‘Take a swan dive off the roof’, Kacchan said. So maybe I would be lucky in another life.”

His friend only breathes weird, like he’s going to have a full breakdown. Izuku is simply… there, remembering all of these things.

“I guess Kacchan got… a little better since we entered U.A. But if I get in his way he’ll literally want to fight over anything. And he’s still a horrible person to a friend as incredible as you, Kirishima-kun,” Izuku vents. “I definitely know how hard it is to rely on him, because in our practical exam against All Might, Kacchan yelled the entire damn time. He slapped me on the face when I tried to think of a plan. It sure was a miracle that we passed. Ugh.” He hugs himself, clutching his own skin. “He’s the worst.”

There’s yet another long, aching pause between the two boys, neither of them sure what to say next. Izuku doesn’t look at his friend much, which reminds him of Middle School, when he tried to avoid people the best he could. It was the only way he wouldn’t get hurt.

(Does this mean he’s expecting Kirishima to hurt him?)

Finally, Kirishima speaks up again, after what feels like half an hour.

“... do you believe him?”

Izuku frowns. “Huh?”

“Do you believe Bakugo?” Kirishima clarifies. “That you’re… worthless and useless, and a waste of space?”

The freckled teenager is speechless, not knowing what to answer. The words seem to be stuck down his throat.

“Do you…” Kirishima hesitates. “Do you really think… you’d be better off dead?”

Izuku’s chest tightens, hurts. Has he been exposed? Is Kirishima right? Because Izuku always does everything to convince himself that Katsuki doesn’t affect him anymore, except he’s only proving the contrary right now. Just like Kirishima, Izuku has his own baggage regarding Katsuki. And it’s certainly heavy.

With his lack of answer, Kirishima pushes aside all their school books to… hug Izuku. The latter stiffens, not expecting the solid yet soft warmth to embrace him despite this moment. It holds Izuku together from breaking into meaningless pieces, from breaking and destroying his bones over and over again. The sort of hug Izuku hasn’t had until he reunited with All Might at the beach, after the Number One Hero’s fall.

The thing about Kirishima, however, is that… they’re actually a lot alike. He’s always putting on a smile to reassure his friends and everyone else that everything will be alright. He’s the first one to rescue someone in need. Kirishima might not be mainly inspired by All Might, but he’s also very loyal and cheerful, always up to a friendly approach with everyone around him. Kirishima, though, is far more sociable than Izuku, seeing as he gets along well with everyone in class, while the greenette stays with his closest friends only.

Truthfully, Izuku was never this close to Kirishima before. He wonders if it’s because the latter hung out with Katsuki. He wonders if he feared Kirishima would find Katsuki way better than Izuku. Or if he just fears everyone in general. Maybe it’s all of these things at once.

Either way, Kirishima keeps him together for what feels like forever, as if only Izuku’s room exists in the world. Nothing else matters, as they’re up to the stars, the All Might comets flying around them. Izuku realizes his green eyes are wet, yet he doesn’t openly sop like he usually does. He’s been so strangely silent today. Maybe after everything that has happened, Izuku’s batteries are beyond low, so Kirishima does his best to recharge him, even if just a little.

And of course, it works.

Izuku melts entirely in the hug, it’s almost pathetic. He knows, though, that Kirishima is the last person that would ever judge him for it. He also knows that his red-haired friend probably needs the recharge as well. Neither of them want to let go just yet. If they could, they would abandon all their inner demons and stick together.

Both boys relax, sinking on the bed. Still, Kirishima is the one who organizes everything to make Izuku more comfortable.

“You’re leaving?” Izuku asks, blushing once he notices how needy he sounds.

“Honestly… I don’t want to.” Judging by his tone, he likely doesn’t want to go to his room, which is right next to Katsuki’s.

“You can stay here, if you want.”

Kirishima smiles fondly. “Yeah. I don’t want to leave you alone, either.”

Izuku likely blushes red again at the other’s soft concern, and even more so when his classmate finally joins him, the teenagers lying close to one another, their hearts beating together, after hurting for so long. At the very least, they get to look out for each other.

Knowing Kirishima, he likely won’t want to leave things with Katsuki the way they are. He would get to the end of things, especially when it comes to the bully hurting Izuku. Regardless, Kirishima won’t want to force anything, because all he wants is to keep Izuku safe. All he wants is to let Izuku know that he isn’t worthless or useless, that he doesn’t deserve to die. That Izuku means the world to him, as well as his other friends – his real friends.

For now, they don’t need to worry about any of that, nor the upcoming exam (mainly because it’s not tomorrow). Because right now, Izuku feels safe, and Kirishima might second that. Only they know how long they’ve needed this.

The two of them likely fall asleep at the same time, breathing together, protecting each other. No explosions will ever destroy what they have.

Summary: What their weaknesses are and how they react

N1GHT_GL1TCH:

Night was one of killed children, but the way she returned was… odd.

She isn’t trapped like the others, though she doesn’t know that. But even if she did, I doubt she’d leave.

She’s swore to always stay and protect other children in any way she could. A child could fall and scrape their knee, and be bawling their eyes out one moment, then laughing and babbling to an unknown presence the next. This was because Night could only be seen through night vision equipment.

Night absolutely hates adults, specifically staff.

She may be able to prevent a death or replace pain with happiness, though she can’t exactly stop it in the moment.

The thing that breaks her is if another child were to lose their life, all because she failed to protect them.

She’d glitch more than usual, and if she could cry perhaps her tears would flood the entire pizzeria. Instead the sorrow simply builds up inside her core, filling and filling until it bursts.

If only Glitch knew the truth… (mwahahaha leaving y’all on a cliff hanger. 👹)

Cotton Candy:

Here we go, my favorite ship of all time!

Relationship goals tbh. These two will make you feel single simply by existing in your presence.

Cotton is a shy outcast, always alone, yet never sad. He’s always just hopping around munching on carrots or planting (burying) something. Though, don’t let his shy innocent bunny persona fool you. He’s a killer, and isn’t to be messed with.

He has two weaknesses. One is Candy. He originally planned to kill her off just like everyone else, but before he even prepared, she got to him first. He never takes his hoodie or bunny hood off in public, which is why he was is complete shock when the cat barged into his house with both of those accessories off. His fluffy white hair could now be fully seen, and underneath the hoodie was a black sleeveless turtleneck, exposing him to her. And not only that, but at his feet laid a dead body, and in his hand a bloody knife. Both of their faces were red as they stared at each other. And at this point he knew, he couldn’t get rid of her just yet.

His other weakness is of course getting caught. He works hard to be an undercover killer after all, he doesn’t feel like dealing with some nosy villager who can’t keep their mouth shut. Though, he has a plan for that..

Candy is the complete opposite of Cotton. An outgoing and independent lady. She’s always seen with a group of friends, tending to crops and animals, yet also out blowing money and being sure to be looking her best. Though she isn’t selfish, she helps her friends in any way she possibly can. She takes good care of herself and her fellow villagers but is also sure to live her life to the fullest.

Cotton is also her weakness. She loves him so so much, despite everything. She knows he wouldn’t hurt her, and would be devastated if anything happened to him. She adores teasing the shy, short bunny. She knows he’d set the world aflame if she asked. He was hers, and she was his.

Shroom:

Shroom used to be a normal human from the 1900’s, though one day she was taken and was experimented on. They used shrooms on her, giving her pale skin and rosy features, along with her white hair and red eyes. They eventually saw no use for her, and trapped her in a capsule, leaving her unconscious for many years. Though she somehow stayed alive. Over time, her capsule began to crack, and the fluid inside began to evaporate. Eventually, the fluid only reached her ankles, and she opened her eyes to see cracks and vines. She felt lightheaded and dizzy, leaning back against the glass to keep herself steady. She couldn’t remember anything, but she knew something wasn’t right. When her mind was finally working properly, she punched the glass, the cracks making it easy to shatter. The place was abandoned, and in ruins. She walked for miles, eventually making her way back to society.

Her memories are all blurred and out of order, but she remembers a war. She remembers mushrooms. Lots and lots of mushrooms. She remembers very bad people, who used foul language instead of using manners, and who shoved instead of gently guiding. She hates it, and scolds anyone who doesn’t use proper manners.

I suppose she doesn’t exactly have a weakness, or at least one that you can exactly pinpoint. But she heavily dislikes wars and fighting of any kind, including things that are seen as inappropriate. She constantly reminds everyone to remember their manners and common sense. And although she has gotten used to this new era, she still acts and lives as if the years haven’t changed. She loves old fashioned things, and although adores how much society is growing, she holds the past close to her heart.

Thetis:

The young girl was born in Rapture, the gorgeous underwater city. She was raised by her mother and father, though she was always closest to her dad. With him being a rather important staff member, he was able to teach her lots of things. Some of those things may have not been appropriate, but they definitely helped. He taught her how to sneak into locked and restricted areas, how to hack bots, how to blackmail, lie, talk her way into getting what she wants, how to be professional, all the things she could ever possibly need to get by as best as she could in Rapture. Sure, it wasn’t right, but down in Rapture, you either make your way to the top, or get crushed by those who are already there.

At the age of 9, her parents were told that Thetis was needed in order to “save Rapture,” as they put it. “How could a child possibly save a city?” Many people asked, and that question was never exactly answered. But, alas, they took her away. Thetis was the first Little Sister to be made, meaning they didn’t fully know what they were doing. The scientists had implanted the slug inside her incorrectly, resulting in her not being fully possessed. These definitely weren’t the results they wanted, and she was named a failure, a mistake, a test gone wrong. Sure, she had the abilities of a normal Little One, but she wasn’t completely under their control, and that just wouldn’t do.

Due to her being aware of what was truly going on, she escaped and made her way to find her parents. Due to this, she was lost and alone. She was in parts of the city that she didn’t even know existed, and with no map or any way to find her way around, how would she ever know how to get back home? She needed to learn to survive.

One of her weaknesses were Splicers. These addicts were addicted to this drug-like slug, and would do anything to have a syringe full of precious ADAM. Including murder a child to rip the slug out their stomach. Though, Thetis has a few forms of safety. Hidey Holes, or vents, are specifically designed for the Little Sisters to traverse through the city without being attacked since nobody but a Sister can fit inside them. Either that, or a Big Daddy, a man grafted inside a metal diving suit, can come to the rescue. But alas, these things aren’t always available. Thetis has had many near death experiences, leaving the poor girl traumatized, constantly fearing for her life. She’s learned to always be hyper-aware of her surroundings. She must know everything around her, down to the last detail. She needs to be able to recognize any sound and know when danger is drawing near. She needs to be able to rush through rooms and hallways and find a place to hide or escape. It’s the only way to survive.

Her other weakness is her parents, more specifically her father. She was his bumblebee, and he was her flower. They needed each other. Everyone told her he was dead, but she refused to believe it. Even if it killed her, she wouldn’t stop traveling these ruined halls until she’s home, until she can finally hear the sound of her father’s voice, calling her his bumblebee once more.

Skulkzite:

This Warden hybrid comes from sculk, and lives in isolation in the Ancient Cities. It doesn’t sleep for long periods of time like the Warden does. It sleeps for only a few hours, and can stay awake for years if it needs to. Though like the Warden, it’s a sleepy creature, and enjoys its beauty rest.

Skulkzite rarely sees the Warden though. They only meet when the Warden is woken up, and only humans do that. Skulkzite could trigger the sensors if it wanted, though there would be no point. They can’t exactly communicate, and the Warden only awakens to protect its city. When there’s no threat, it retreats back to the sculk for more slumber. And humans rarely come across the deep dark, and no mobs spawn. There’s no form of life whatsoever. This is Skulkzite’s weakness. Isolation, not a soul to see, not a soul to speak to, just… emptiness.

When Skulkzite finally escaped that god-forsaken place, it was luckily during the night. Skulkzite has lived in complete darkness for thousands of years, and has never seen light that wasn’t candles or soul lanterns. But when it finally does, it regrets it deeply. Skulkzite was stumbling across the land, trying to get used to it all. The odd green blades making contact with its hooves, the hard brown, sometimes white, rough material grazing its claws, the tiny white dots glittering in the abyss above its head. And most of all, the creatures that roamed. It didn’t know what to think. They were so odd yet so beautiful, roaming and living. Some creatures even rode on the back of a black, 6-legged creature, or a white, fluffy thing with yellow feet that made odd noises. It loved everything it was seeing. But soon, the sun rose. Skulkzite was safe under a tree, yet watched in horror as some of the creatures were caught aflame and withered away, yet others were left unaffected. It’d only seen small flames before on candles, but this was absolutely terrifying..

Cautiously extending its hand from the shadows, it was relieved to see that Skulkzite was one of the creatures that didn’t catch fire. But, as it walked out the shadows, the sun immediately blinded it. It let out an ear breaking screech, dropping to the grass. Blue glowing tears streamed down its pitch black cheeks, crawling back into the shadows. The hybrid had no idea how to describe what had happened, other than it hurt. Skulkzite never dared go into the light again, deciding that it may not catch on fire, though it burned all the same.

Elijah:

Elijah is a 13 year old girl who was kidnapped by Evokers. They made her one of them, giving her the magic they had. She was possessed to do evil things just like they did, and for a long time this was how she lived, not even remembering that she had a life before this.

Her fear is, ironically, being overpowered. She’s the most feared thing across all villages, to the point that she has her own bell chime for when she approaches. Every few weeks everyone must evacuate their houses as she raids the village of all its goods, and if she offers a trade they better not raise any prices, or they’re dead. And if their golem dares attack, she’ll kill him in front of everyone, taking his iron and tearing the poppy to shreds. She couldn’t stand losing all this power.

Mother:

I suppose her weakness would be her malfunctions. She was never intended to be vicious or cause harm to the children, though she can’t help the glitches in her coding. It isn’t really her fault. A misbehaving child enrages her, and triggers these malfunctions. She could go from cradling a baby and singing a lullaby to decapitated heads rolling across the floor and intestines being used as a noose. Just behave and you’ll be fine!

“Mother goose, mother goose, here she comes, there she goes. Where have all the children gone? Nobody knows!” The children would chant when Mother wasn’t around.

I: Has tumblr caused you to stop liking any fandoms, if so, which and why?

Nope! In my opinion, no one should allow tumblr to have that level of power over them. Sure I’ve chosen to distance myself from some fandom communities but it’s never ever made me stop liking the actual thing I’m a fan of. If I stop liking something I was once a fan of it’s because of my own changing opinion or something to do with the canon itself.

J: Name a fandom you didn’t care/think about until you saw it all over tumblr.

Huh I just know I’ve started watching sooo many shows & movies due to seeing stuff on my dash that looked cool 😂 Most recently Yellowjackets!!!! Seeing all my mutuals freak out over the lesbian cannibal show made me want to watch it & I’ve never been the same since. It really does live up to the hype.

P: Invent a random AU for any fandom (we always need more ideas):

Hmm hmm hmm…. okay I don’t know the other day I was re-watching Don’t Trust the Bitch in Apt 23 & I think there’s a great Azula/Katara modern alternate universe story there. I mean - an idealistic roomie with a good heart & a bitchy manipulative roomie who’s her best friend? It’s right there. Jet would play James Vanderbeek’s role but I’m thinking he’s an Indy punk star or something to keep the celebrity thing going - Jet has to be a rebel of some kind. I don’t see him as just a Hollywood actor lol

R: A pairing you ship that you don’t think anyone else ships.

Wow now that’s tough 😂 It’s the age of the internet I think for just about every possible pairing SOMEONE else ships it. Ummm I’m partial to Nat/Travis/Jackie in Yellowjackets I just love the chaotic energy between the three of them especially in Doomcoming & I think they all should’ve had a messed up threesome at least once. But I’m not sure I’m the only one who ships that I just don’t see a lot of people talking about it lmao

I’m definitely going to buy the sun and the star and I’ve read all the spin off series as well so I’m pretty confident saying that’s my longest fandom. My fav spin off was Magnus Chase

G- okay so as a kid I had like a lot of casual ships but first OTP was probably Percabeth. I submitted a fanfiction of them for a school assignment when I was nine. I think that’s all we really need to hear to know that they’re the answer.

I know that in my circle of dc fan logs there’s a lot of Timber content but the wider community seems to still be mostly hung up on TimKon. And I get it, they’d be really cute and all but Timber

More Teen Titans (fab five) bc I think mostly when people talk about the teen titans they’re usually talking abt the cartoon series

O- Song is Bubble Pop Electric by Gwen Stefani, it is very Birdflash or really any speedster ship to me, very nice bouncy beat reminds me of Bart also

P- AU: Canary Tim - I’ll elaborate on this bc it is one of my aus and is kind of the reason that some of my second gen bat ocs exist so it’s kind of relevant.

First Black Canary - Dinah Drake. Married Larry Lance, daughter was Dinah Lance, who became the next Black Canary. Do you see where I’m going with this. Tim Drake. Dinah Drake. There’s a very weak connection there technically so I just made Dinah his aunt. Based off of Dinah Drake and Dinah Lance, we can assume the canary meta gene is hereditary, ergo we’ll just send it Tim’s way as well.

He won’t have his activated until his late teens though bc I want him to have atrocious voice control for a good while so he gets shipped off to train with Black Canary until he won’t accidentally deafen everyone around him.

From there, he’ll graduate Robin to become some kind of Songbird. It was originally going to be Galah (bc pink) but I changed it to Blackbird so his kids could call him B and it would be very emotional for Bruce to watch history repeat itself with the nickname and whatnot. Also this way tim gets to keep his red black and gold colour scheme.

that’s the au part but the part where my oc Jasper couldn’t really exist outside of this au is bc he’s a meta with a voice ability, that’s similar to the Canary meta gene but he’s not related to any of them. He’s Australian so he travels to America to look for Black Canary. He can’t find her, he keeps on missing her by like a handful of minutes or hours, but he does find Tim, and at this point he’s fed up of looking for Dinah and settles for the 19-year-old Blackbird in front of him. Tim, who only really got control of his powers around two weeks ago, chooses not to mention his inexperience and accepts that he’s a dad now

okay wow I didn’t expect to ramble that much but yeah that’s basically the au

Q- hate to say it but I don’t really ship stephCass. I used to, but I hc Cass as older by a bit too much for me to comfortable shipping them in my own au yknow? I wouldn’t say I’ve abandoned them completely though, but the only other ships I really could have put here were ones where I saw art of them, thought it looked sort of cute and then found out they were pro ship, so uh

anyways I think they are cute and would absolutely celebrate if they were made canon but it’s not really for me is all

R- hmmmm. Well I’ll start off with one that I think very few people ship. Steph and Bailey, who has one appearance in the Robin/Spoiler Annual. And I know I’m not the only one bc I’m pretty sure it was @aliteralchicken’s blog where I saw them for the first time, if not whoops

I also have a lot of Janet Drake ships bc I love her and given that most people do not love her I think it’s safe to say that Janet x Selina, Janet x Talia and Janet x Dana aren’t exactly popular ships

I’m trying to think of an m/m ship bc sapphic ships are hard to come by anyways, I’m thinking Bart x Preston but that’s mostly bc I haven’t really been looking for content of them so that would make them seem like a rare pair

oh also Darla Aquista/Laura Fell and Ariana Dzerchenko. Idk I think they’d be cute, and Ariana could really only upgrade from Tim let’s be honest

ships: I’m a multishipper who isn’t much of a shipper in the first place so it’s hard for me to say I like a ship a lot because I know I’d get tired of it the next week or month. currently though I find myself enjoying ships I didn’t have strong opinions before like magna/sol, luck/sally, charmy/yuno, and finral/vanessa.

friendships: magna and luck? asta and liebe? or the recent yami and nacht? that’s bromance at its finest for you and I'm all for it! oh and I vibe with a lot of potential dynamics like gauche and zora or luck and charmy or asta and grey!

O - Choose a song at random. Which ship or character does it remind you of?

uhm, in another world where the bulls are aware of nacht's existence and have met him a few times, but they absolutely refuse to talk or even mention his name, asta and noelle - the two newbies - would get super curious and try to investigate about the mysterious vice captain everyone seem to hold a deep grudge against, only for the bulls to pull a disney move and sing the "we don't talk about bruno nacht-o" while venting off.

in my defense the question says "at random" and I had to come up with something to work with this song.

yes we do!

ok so y’all remember how the magic parliament wanted to put the blame of the elf attacks on asta and used him as a scapegoat? let’s say that they did, and it worked, and julius couldn’t help him, so the black bulls had to step in and fight against the parliament; results? the one squad known as the black bulls will be officially disbanded, the members will be stripped off from their titles, and then they will all be exiled to the forsaken realm where they won’t be allowed to step foot neither on the common nor the noble realms.

this turned out to be the worst decision ever made in a courtroom because one month forward the one kingdom known as clover kingdom lost a third chunk of its territory as towns in the forsaken realm, filled of citizens and refugees alike, all declared their loyalty to the freshly created kingdom.

asta was apparently the leader.

short story not, after the courtroom asta had a lot of complicated feelings and said “fuck it,” he went through a self-searching, self-reflecting journey then came back with the conclusion that perhaps what he needed is to go back to basics and start working from his home, so he went to each and every town in the realm helping people and refugees from other kingdoms with the bulls tagging along; they built houses, provided food, taught kids, cleared dungeons, shared knowledge, and all that... life is better than ever, people are happier than ever, and the bulls are freer than ever.

asta was as much surprised as everyone else when people waked up one day and decided that they’ll follow him as their new leader, with hage as their capital and licht’s skull as the inspiration of what would be the kingdom’s flag.

because no one treated this new kingdom seriously at first and just made fun of “them peasants acting like they’re a big deal smh”, it was commonly referred to as the “joker kingdom”

A - Ships that you currently like a lot.

Everything below is Descendants, but for this one, I gotta say SK8’s Matchablossom because that’s the ship that’s been heading my fleet as of late lmao. They’re the ship I didn’t know I needed and didn’t expect to fall in love with, but here we are. They mean the world to me. They are joy, they are comfort, they are relatable as fuck. I just love them a lot. 🥰🥰

B - A pairing–platonic, romantic or sexual–that you initially didn’t consider, but someone changed your mind.

I didn’t consider the Rotten OT4 at all when I first watched the movies, but when I got into the fandom, I started seeing fics about them and decided to check them out for curiosity’s sake. I just completely fell in love with the ship and the dynamics within it thanks to the amazing fic writers in this fandom. ♥️

C - A ship you have never liked and probably never will.

Jay/Gil. No disrespect to those who enjoy it, but I’m reallyyyy not a fan. The two of them together just don’t make sense to me for reasons I don’t care enough to get into and, ultimately, there’s nothing and no one who’s ever going to make me like them as a ship.

D - A pairing you wish you liked but just can’t.

Harlos, like in a romantic shippy way. I don’t know why, but they just don’t interest me that way even though I love both characters and I find their potential dynamics otherwise really intriguing. I’ve read a few good fics that involve this ship. Still always find myself wishing it was something Jaylos instead though lol.

L - Say something genuinely nice about a character who isn’t one of your faves.

DEEP SIGH. Something nice about Beast, huh… he would make a nice rug, does that count? 😏 And Doug, hmm? Oh, Telli, the cruelty. I jest, I jest. 😂 Uhhhh… he’s… clearly booksmart... which is good! 👍👍

M - Name a character that you’d like to have for a friend.

Jay! 🥺 He’s so friend shaped. He strikes me as the sort of person who gives really good hugs and has that kind of presence where you feel safe as soon as he walks into the room. I think he would be a really good listener and someone who always knows the right thing to say to make you laugh. He might be a little insensitive sometimes, but never on purpose and he’d do his best to learn from it because hurting his friends or anyone he loves is the last thing he wants to do.

Now, mind you, I think my initial reaction to him would be alike to Lonnie’s in the D1 kitchen scene lmao, but once we got past that, I’m pretty sure we’d get along great. 💕

P - Invent a random AU for any fandom (we always need more ideas).

This is heavily and shamelessly inspired by First Kill lol, but okay, so… AU where Jay and Carlos meet at high school and Jay, who’s new to the city and a vampire hunter by night, recognizes the seemingly kind, quiet, and unassuming Carlos for what he is: a vampire.

Eventually, they both end up at a party thrown by Carlos’ human friends, Mal and Evie, who rig a game of seven minutes in heaven because they can see something’s going on between the boys and they can’t remember the last time they saw Carlos show genuine romantic interest in anyone.

Jay’s suave as ever and absolutely confident Carlos isn’t on to him. He’s also confident that he can make this kill. It’s not the first time his target’s been attractive. He just needs to make Carlos trust him, then he can lure him out somewhere after the party where no one will think to look for them.

Carlos has been playing up his innocence for Jay, though. He knows who and what he is, and as soon as they’re alone in the closet, he advances on him and whispers (I can’t write this without laughing), “Is that a stake in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?”

Jay’s not sure what his emotions are doing with a vampire literally breathing down his neck. He’s more into it than he has any right to be, but it doesn’t seem to matter in that moment. He forgets everything, especially his father, who he’d promised a pair of fangs tonight to be turned in for a hefty bounty.

Fuck it is all he thinks as he meets Carlos’ eyes in the near-dark and boldly leans in to kiss him.

They only jump apart when someone bangs on the closet door to let them know their time is up.

As they return to the party, they exchange a glance that asks a silent, mutually unanswered question: “Now what?”
