I'm watching star trek voyager so I'm gonna put my thoughts below & keep adding onto it (yes I'm going from tng -> voy & skipping ds9 for now at least even though I feel like I'm missing out on context bc trekkies seem to hold ds9 as like the gold standard of star trek but I watched a couple episodes & I just couldnt dig it)

the relationship of kes & neelix is so bewildering to me like what does she see in him like hes not even a bad person but he's just a lot dumber than her & has that "where's my hug" type guy energy also he's like so old not even in a sugar daddy way just in a boomer way like doesn't kes's species only live 9 years

I hope tom paris goes through some character development because as of right now he's soooooo annoying like referring to chakotay as an "indian" all the time......ugh one would hope we wouldn't still be doing that in the 25th century also I knew from seeing online discourse that chakotay's writing is stereotypical in a well intentioned but still badly-aged way & it's not ruining the show for me but whenever he closes his eyes & the panflute music kicks in I just sigh deeply

one thing that has never stopped annoying me is the fact that we literally see naomi wildman be born onscreen & then she goes from newborn -> 9 year old over the course of like 2 seasons

okay I finished it & I'll need more time to collect my thoughts but the basic idea is: I liked the show but I feel like there was lots of possibilities that went unexplored but one thing I especially liked is that unlike TNG (which is still my favourite trek) the female characters got storylines that didnt just revolve around interpersonal stuff (ie. family/romance) but actually got to use their specific skills

but now I'm rewatching the first couple episodes of because I honestly had no idea what was going on (I didn't even realize the doctor was a hologram until like halfway through season 1 & I didn't realize tuvok was spying on the maquis until like season 3) & one thing I have noticed is that NEELIX WAS SO FUCKING UNHINGED IN THE FIRST EPISODE LIKE HE COMES OFF LIKE HEATH LEDGER AS THE JOKER IN THAT SCENE WHERE HE VIDEOCALLS VOYAGER & STRUTTING AROUND THE TRANSPORT ROOM IN HIS PIMP COAT & ALL THE WATER STUFF LIKE WHO IS THIS MAN also belanna's makeup was so bad I'm sorry <\\\3

symbolism vs realism: sdway + tfps differing takes on the same concept

i really DO think its extremely valuable + interesting to compare scooby doo where are you and the funky phantom but not at all in the manner its usually doooone 😭😭 because the fact of the matter is that tfp was the second show in the meddling kids plus mascot genre hb capitalized on so many times n its SO interesting to examine both shows through this context + look at their differences in approach to the same basic concept

like ok first bc of the obsession w positing this aspect specifically as a clone: what the characters represent!!! not necessarily digging into their personalities but just what they represent

scooby doo where are you is a beloved n charming show albeit extraordinarily so a product of its time - in one aspect actually surprisingly revolutionarily so that being the characters and especially in viewing them through the contextual lens of the closing decade: the 60s.

this article does imo a comprehensive job in breaking down shaggy, daphne + fred in what their characters represented + i thoroughly rec it anyways as an interesting read but i think velma is the Most notable: velma was a character created in the wake of the 60s wave of feminism. this is baked fundamentally into her character - the nerdiness, the (for the time) androgyny, the outfit. for female characters aimed towards children at the time it was incredibly revolutionary like i watched an interview with the original voice actress of velma + she was talking about how important it was for her to be able to give life to this explicitly intelligent and assertive female character who young girls could use as a role model. velmas feminist origins are something that in more modern iterations i feel is becoming increasingly lost….

criticisms for the characters in sdway being fairly flat + not fully realized are valid to a certain extent but i think that is largely due to them being written to be more representations + symbols than rounded + developed characters. bear in mind this isnt to say they are completely void of personality (they certainly arent, despite what public conscience claims, and they have many quirks that made them so lovable) just that said personalities often go hand in hand with the culture they all represent

then u have the characters of the funky phantom. the first episode of the funky phantom was released in september 1971, almost a year after the last episode of sdway aired. the episode titles were exactly the same (“dont fool with a phantom”)

despite this, through the use of the characters + their dynamic it is evident to any viewer that this show intends to diverge itself from scooby doo - a trio of teenagers rather than a quartet creates a triangle of interactions to work with, the mascot being a ghost of an old man rather than a talking dog does imo ground the show more as more “realistic” (people are more likely to believe in ghosts than talking animals). theyre not in a big flowery van, theyre in a simple dune buggy that u would expect an early 70s teen to own. due to these aspects, the characters of the funky phantom feel more rounded in comparison to sdway, less subcultural symbols + more representations of average american teens. april skip + augie, particularly in their interactions, feel more developed as average teens u could expect to meet in the hallways at school bc thats how they were intended to come across - theyre based loosely on typical archetypes (the prep, the nerd, the jock) but importantly those archetypes are more palatable than the subcultures velma, daphne and shaggy represent and considered more “realistic” because they feed the dominant culture

and to extend that idea of palatability its additionally integral to note the era mudsy hails from - the revolutionary war era, an era extremely familiar to american audiences. while mudsy as a direct representation of the war is by no means realistic, in that its made clear he wasnt himself directly involved + every telling of historical figures is an obvious fabrication of his, the fact remains that this seems like an element intended to try and “ground” the funky phantom in comparison to scooby doo. it makes it more palatable for (us-centric) audiences: dominant culture vs subculture. when watching the funky phantom with its portrayal of mudsy as this bumbling inoffensive snagglepuss-esque character its important to keep in mind the question of WHY hes being presented that way, considering the era he supposedly represents, and how that presentation serves a particular narrative

realism vs symbolism is abundantly apparent in the contrasting usual settings of the shows too

sdway has an undeniable gothic flavor to it. the color pallets, the big spooky houses, the dusky setting for so many of the episodes. an abandoned theme park at night? an abandoned circus at night? the majority of sdway takes place in the evening. conversely, tfp tends to take a brighter palette with the majority of episodes occurring at daytime with despite the intro few spooky houses to be seen!!! heir scare has the only traditionally spooky houses (fittingly, this is also one of the few episodes that takes place solely at night, in the aftermath of a storm). muddlemore manor is given its spotlight episode, but theres hardly anything spooky about it. this again ties into the more “realistic” tone it houses, forgoing the aesthetic or symbolism of sdway for it. theres even an episode centering a highschool football game - not just a passing mention or brief showing like the school dance for example in sdway but an entire episode about it that serves to give focus to the dynamic of skip + augie by placing them in a setting devoted to teamwork

the VILLAINS even lean into this contrast

ofc as a show with a ghost as its main character there r only so many fake ghosts/supernatural episodes u can do. scooby doo leans more heavily into the supernatural thematically than the funky phantom which has the majority of its villains be common crooks. the supposed supernatural spirits the characters in the funky phantom DO deal with almost always resemble a historical figure drawing from real events to varying degrees. the only ghostly villain in tfp that doesnt abide by that is the sheet ghost in haunt in inn. compare that to sdway where u have ghosts, hydes, robots, vampires, werewolves, witches and so many super iconic ones to speak of!!! captain cutler, space kook, charlie, the green ghosts….but then despite that the supernatural IS real in the funky phantom where in scooby doo where are you its used as a symbol for motive. the most interesting monsters are the ones that resemble thematically the real villain behind it

TLDR one of the biggest differences IMO between scooby doo + the funky phantoms takes on the same basic concept is their reliance on symbolism and realism respectively!!!! how those themes seep into so many aspects of the respective shows. i just think its SO redundant to write tfp off merely as a clone when theres so much to be had in interesting discussion w comparing it, genuinely comparing it, to scooby doo where are you TBH

We got some real good blorbo action today, friends.

John and Marlena begin to engage in their long-established foreplay ritual of eating strawberries and cream. (This is, admittedly, barely a blip on the Kink Radar but I legit love that these two septuagenarians are still so into each other.)  John even whipped the cream himself! Also he brought 5001 strawberries, which is a completely arbitrary number that you really shouldn't try to read anything into.

Then Brady (John's son, Marlena's stepson; easily in his 40s and still living with these two) comes home and completely interruptuses their coitus. He whines about how he and Boring Chloe broke up and will there ever be a woman as good and pure as Boring Chloe and can you believe Boring Chloe got an apartment with Hot Xander? What does she even see in that guy, anyway?

John, meanwhile, tries to be as subtle as he can as he checks his watch and tries to remember just how long that blue pill he took is supposed to last.

(If you ever wondered if I thought I was too good to make a Viagra joke, I guess you know better now.)

Speaking of BC and HX, they are indeed still cohabitating. Chloe is lecturing Xander on the proper way to hang a picture frame (since they're all falling off the walls now) and Xander is convinced that it's not his shoddy workmanship but an actual ghost.

And sure, you may mock this notion. I did for a minute, until I remembered that the character who got *by far* the most screentime on this show in 2022 was Satan. Yes, that Satan. From school. I mean, Hell.

As he talks this out, we realize that it's *kind* of a ghost in the Scottish play sense of the concept. He's still feeling guilty about his role in the death of Susan Banks (our cat's namesake). Which is valid. We did kinda gloss over that when it happened and it's not a bad thing to circle back to.

But I immediately jumped to *we never saw her body! She could be the Mystery Hostage aboard the USS Lobsterfest!! That's gotta be why the show is reminding us about her, right?!*

Wrong. It's not Susan *or* my dark horse theory, Jan Spears. Why did I even bother hiding that in a spoiler tag yesterday?!

Von Leuschner, who is getting hotter to me with each passing day, reveals that his hostage is, in fact, Andrew. A character we've only recently met and who I'm only a little interested in because he's part of a gay couple and the show is running dangerously low on boys who kiss each other right now.

But I don't particularly care that he's being held hostage . Not when I thought of two much better possibilities right off the top of my damn head.

We also spend some time with Megan and Kristen in prison. Being, as they are, ostensibly sisters (albeit sisters who only recently met and weren't even aware of one another's existence before this year), they do what adult siblings do and pretend to show interest in each other's personal lives.

Kristen reads a letter from her daughter, Rachel, who gloats about finally breaking up her dad and That Bitch Chloe. (These are essentially eight year old Rachel's words. I would never.)

And Megan reveals that she's connected to Von Leuschner who, *btw, is actually your nephew, Kristen*. I then spent 5-10 minutes going through all the DiMeras we know and trying to work out whose kid he is. And then we find out *Megan* is his mother and I feel like a real stupid.

Having gotten the Salem Resurrection Phone Tree started to inform her massive network of relatives that she's still alive, Kate now settles in to enjoy some alone time with Roman.

"I want something," she says, and waits patiently as Roman cycles through food ("I had lobster on the boat"), a shower ("I showered on the boat, before I got into this fancy dress to eat lobster") and sleep ("not tired.")

Roman. Buddy.  She hasn't seen you in *months*. She made exactly one call before turning her phone off and putting the DO NOT DISTURB sign on the hotel room door. *She wants. To. Fuck.* What in god's name is wrong with you, man?!

rating spirit halloween’s new animatronics for 2021

or at least what’s showing as New Arrivals on the site for me. looks like we got 15 new arrivals listed here and im HYPE about them so here we go

the caretaker

pretty standard reaper character with a Gravedigger theme to it. hes... fine? nothing about this particularly stands out to me, but i dont dislike it at all. i like his gravestone. would be good for a graveyard set. i guess ill give him... 6.5/10

at first glance he also just looks like a standard reaper character (or voldemort. he definitely looks like voldemort now that i think about it) but it turns out he SPRINGS UP RIDICULOUSLY TALL LIKE A CURSED WACKY INFLATABLE TUBE MAN and the spring motion in the video is actually really fucking fast so, while this isn’t a lot different from other jumpscare animatronics, i gotta give him credit bc i guarantee this would have scared the fuck outta me in person. according to the site he’s almost 9 feet tall at his full height 

i expected him to jump out and scream but i did not expect. That. i feel like if you put him up on a stage or something to make him loom over people even more he’d be very menacing indeed. would also be really good if you put him behind something so you don’t see him until he's suddenly There

pretty much just a zombie but he’s cute i like him. i like the green eyes. i dont know what it is about him in motion but the video makes him kind of endearing to me for some reason and i dont know why. 6/10

at first for some reason i thought the monster’s name was ophelia but i think that’s supposed to be the name of the victim? i think the idea here is “girl haunted by a Nightmare” but the fact that the monster itself is so small and doesn’t actually have a body for the most part makes this unintentionally hilarious to me 

like. it. it’s so small. it’s just a little shoulder demon. it’s so cute

anyway i like how the girl’s eyes move back and forth but the sounds she makes are uncomfortable and she just looks so. stiff and solid and there doesn’t seem to be any movement at all other than her eyes and the monster peeking out so it’s just kind of weird to look at. it’s an interesting concept but the execution is just strange and unintentionally hilarious. 7/10 bc i still think its really funny 

someone should buy this and mod it into chrona and ragnarok

i love how they have her hanging upside down like this, it makes it so much more visually interesting than the figures that just kinda stand there looking spooky, even though she doesn’t really Do much (she just swings and her head moves around a little, just laughs, doesn’t have spoken lines) 

i love her outfit i love her hair shes SO cute i love this little murder gremlin i love her i love her 

im still waiting on spirit to give us a female clown figure that isn’t “creepy little girl” (ive commented before on how their only female figures tend to be either the Old Hag or the Creepy Little Girl and not a lot else) but i absolutely love this all the same 20/10

according to the description he’s actually harriet’s dad!! we have an evil clown father and daughter duo here and im LIVING for it

i dont think ive ever seen spirit do characters that are related to each other like this that’s so cute,

apparently his wife/harriet’s mother left them and ran off with the ringmaster. he’s a single father clown trying to raise his evil daughter clown and i support him wholeheartedly

there doesn’t seem to be any more animatronics on this storyline, we don’t have the mother here and the only ringmaster animatronic they have is the rotten ringmaster who was released previously, but i doubt he’s the homewrecker ringmaster in question. he Could Be. imagine if your wife left you for That. we dont even know if henry’s wife was also a clown or not. spirit halloween clown lore going on here

anyway i absolutely LOVE this clown, he does something INCREDIBLY STARTLING AND UNEXPECTED which i dont want to spoil for you. go watch his video and see what he does its great 

my absolute favorite type of halloween animatronic is the “does something completely unexpected” category and this one is ALSO a clown and a GOOD clown at that

and he’s got this great vintage clown style i really like, i love scary clowns like this that actually look like they could believably be a real guy and not just some kind of mutant Clown Monster 

and hes got cards!! card suit motif!!! i love it i love him this is a great clown 20/10 for him too

it’s pretty much just a ghost but it’s SUCH A GOOD ghost. especially in this photo here with proper spooky lighting and everything. i would absolutely LOVE to see this in a haunt attraction, it looks SO good even in bright store lighting. i feel like this under the right lights and in the right environment could look SO fuckign cool  

the shredded rag look!!! the ethereal glow!! the weird jellyfishy movement!!! the classic wooOoO oO o o ooo noises!! this may perhaps be the ideal ghost. it is without flaw. a perfect specimen. i fuckign LOVE this ghost i want it so badly but i do not have the space or the money for this thing 15/10 w. raith my beloved. my true love. maybe one day

at first i was slightly disappointed to see that this guy didn’t have an actual name, but then in the description apparently his name is Bill “Buzzsaw” Jackson and his backstory is he tried to be a wrestler but it didnt go very well so he grafted weapons in place of his hands. i guess. you know, to be better at wrestling. i dont really understand it and i definitely would not have gone with “disgraced former wrestler” as the concept for this guy  

but anyway we have mr jackson at my store right now, he’s Big, i like him. he doesn’t really move very fast and doesn’t jump at you, he just kinda swings his saw around. for some reason he just seems friendly to me and i dont know why. makes me think of like an uncle dressed up for halloween rather than an actual murderer guy. i dont know i cant explain it but i like him hes my friend 8/10

wacky mole

this guy’s also at my store this year, i didn’t know his name was wacky mole fsdgjsdg

he’s listed as a new arrival, but i thought i remembered seeing him before, and the description says he’s a returning fan favorite, so. i guess this is a re-release 

anyway pretty standard Scary Monster Clown. his teeth look like candy corn. i like it but i think they should just Be candy corn. i like his colorscheme and his silly giant buttons. light up eyes are always a nice touch. he doesnt really stand out but hes overall a pretty good clown. 7/10

good ol’ classic skeleton. he’s pretty nicely modeled though and i highly recommend watching the video for this guy because he moves REALLY well for a spirit animatronic, he’s got a way wider range of movement than most of them do and his head moves really nicely. one of the benefits of a skeleton animatronic is you don’t have to deal with lip movement, so his jaw movements match with his lines a lot more realistically. i like the animated glowing eyes too, it really gives him a lot of personality. he’s really interesting to watch. like, it’s just a skeleton, but it’s a really really good skeleton, so, 8/10 

BEETLEJUICE!!

i love love love franchise character animatronics and spirit has so much great beetlejuice stuff this seems well suited to them but looking at it............. hm. hm

he just looks so. stiff and his face comes across like, deer caught in the headlights to me. it Does Not look very natural but it looks slightly better in motion (he just swivels from side to side and says a few phrases but it somehow looks less. shellshocked when he’s moving) 

maybe not the greatest execution but maybe he looks better in person and im still hype to see him so 8/10 regardless 

night stalker

we have this guy at my store too, im still not really sure what’s going on with his arms (did he just rip loose from them and leave them behind? did someone do this to him? i dont know) but i love a good spooky scarecrow. love his Wiggles. hes a pretty good boy. 6.5/10

here we have another pennywise, it pretty much just pops out at you, but it’s still pretty good. i like the full size one they had before better, but this one’s slightly cheaper and would be easier to integrate into a haunted house attraction since he comes with a built in set piece. it looks good but doesn’t do much. 7.5/10 i guess

anyway hes got kind of the same issue beetlejuice has where the figure just. looks kind of stiff, and he looks more like a spooky ghost decoration than like, A Person. he doesnt seem to have any lines or anything either, he just kinda pops out. but then again i guess whenever we see ghostface in person in the movies he doesn’t usually talk anyway. i dont really know how id make this better but it seems a little underwhelming somehow. still hype to see it though. 7/10 i guess

it’s a very nice looking werewolf, it’s a well designed figure and definitely looks very imposing, but it’s... just a werewolf. there’s not really anything particularly interesting or creative here. its a perfectly good werewolf. i dont have anything to say about this. 6.5/10 

i also just am not a werewolf person so maybe someone out there who has a greater appreciation for werewolves might like him more

i know i have a film blog i could talk about this on but no, i watched a five hour twenty minute movie so you’re going to hear me talk about it!!

talking about novecento below the cut (it’s that film ppl keep going “these look like artemy and daniil” for the patho ppl following me)

learning that novecento was supposed to be like a miniseries makes a lot of sense in part because of its length and in part because of all the things it clearly wanted to do but couldn’t. like, for example, it clearly wanted to focus not just on alfredo and olmo but on attila, and this winds up not working out in the film’s favor for a couple of reasons.

for one, alfredo’s and olmo’s scenes without each other establish their characters as flawed human beings, but attila’s scenes just establish him as cartoonishly evil. i don’t think people really need to be hand-fed the idea that fascists are bad people, but i think the way they really hammed up his character detracts from the film’s later point that fascism isn’t something that comes on all at once but is built up through years of people sitting by and profiting off others’ work and doing nothing about the evil around them. the literal fascist acting inhumanly sadistic makes it look like “oh you’ll know for sure when you see something evil dw about it :)”.

the infamous cat scene and the scene regina at alfredo’s wedding really didn’t develop the character or the story in any way and there was no reason to make the viewer sit through something so explicit and unpleasant. it really wasn’t any different from the torture porn in films like hostel. we know that attila is evil, we don’t need to be shown any of that shit in graphic detail? those moments could have been better spent establishing why alfredo bothered putting up with attila in the first place, or establishing what exactly ada saw in attila that she didn’t like that would have added depth to two other characters in the film.

for two, the time those scenes took really should have gone to developing other characters or relationships. anita was done so dirty by the narrative and i would like to have seen more exploration of the friendship between the two couples, between alfredo and his father, between alfredo and olmo as adults that lead to them falling out, or as i said earlier to explaining why alfredo put up with attila in the first place when he’s clearly not fond of the guy himself.

a miniseries would have given the film more time to explore both the working-class and the upper-class, since clearly bertolucci was interested in exploring the working class specifically. i think the story could have benefited from expanding on how the working class in the film came to find socialism to being w and how anita and olmo worked to encourage people to learn more about it and unionize.

in general i think the film really falls flat on interesting things that i could have done either as a miniseries or if bertolucci had prioritised better. potentially unpopular opinion but the director wasn’t strong enough to carry a film that focused so many themes at once and really should have made the central focus either the class tension between two friends from very different backgrounds, or on the clash between fascism and socialism during the 1900s in italy.

i say bertolucci wasn’t strong enough to pull off both because both aspects wind up suffering greatly by the film sloppily bouncing between the two. there are huge swaths of time where olmo and alfredo don’t talk to each other at all and the absence between them is never explained or brought up as a point of tension. like, when alfredo finds olmo going through his father’s things, it’s never explained what he’s looking for or why, and olmo brings up that alfredo’s been gone for a month. alfredo’s upset to hear about anita’s death during childbirth, but there was no expansion on the friendship between the two couples past them all meeting ada for the first time. olmo doesn’t seem upset about alfredo’s absence, but he doesn’t show up at alfredo and ada’s wedding, and the two barely interact with each other up until the point where olmo shows up at the house to find his daughter, now old enough to be learning to read and write.

it’s hard to see their friendship as the focal point of the film when their actual friendship stops being the film’s focus around the time ada is introduced and so much of their interactions are put on the backburner in favor of other things. ada’s a very interesting character, probably the only character in the film who’s not entirely static, but even her relationship building up with alfredo isn’t really...explored? at all?

actually past showing alfredo and olmo as children and then olmo returning from the war, the film does a horrible job at showing the passage of time.

and since i’ve brought up anita it is just kinda fucked up how she’s introduced immediately as a love interest - not as a character w her own personality, but as a love interest - given exactly one character trait (she’s a socialist!), before she’s suddenly pregnant, meets ada, and is killed offscreen in childbirth. they did fucking nothing with her and that’s just. infuriating.

anyway i think a miniseries would have fit the story better bc then there would have been actual time to delve into the concepts the film really wants to explore but can’t. it wouldn’t have fixed all the issues with it - like, what happens to anita? and the graphic shit they have attila do? those weren’t necessary in general - but it would have fixed a couple of things about it.

maybe in the back of her mind expects mike to be the same as she remembers her when actually, she’s grown and matured way beyond the party girl she was before? in a way that carts hasn’t, in the same way

but mike just goes. uh. what the fuck are you doing here, jeff, and jeff's like. wait what

truth be told, the major reason jeff dipped was bc while she was getting more responsibility with the kings, becoming more comfortable w the way her career was going, mike‘s life was spiralling

and it was hard to watch, and also not rly something that jeff wanted to deal w at the time! she was selfish, immature, yes a bit fairweather. and also. some mean little part of her was glad that it wasn’t HER going off the rails for once

i think in this universe she hasn’t fully processed those things yet! so when mike sends her packing, and she goes back to [wherever she spends the off-season.... toronto? LA?] w her tail between her legs she actually DOES do some soul searching (after fucking around for a little bit. long enough to confirm this isn’t what she wants anymore). and then she goes to therapy lmfao

on the kings together, it was like that thing in hs where you get a new, cooler friend group, and turn around and start being mean/looking down on your old friends? the ppl on the team started to get down on mike, and it was easier to laugh along than put herself out there and say “stop being assholes to her”

and she had rationales at the time, it’s hard being on a new team, mike’s been here longer, it’s all in good fun etc when rly. it was just bad behaviour, and an excuse to b petty and mean to someone who YES has been in her life for over a decade now

like no fucking wonder mike started self medicating w various substances, started spending more time in bars. the ppl around her weren’t supporting her! and ESPECIALLY she was getting no support at all from carts!

the real problem was that she hadn’t wanted to do serious, settling down type things, hadn’t wanted to deal w things that she considered a hassle, didn’t realize how deep mike's issues ran. when mike would come to her to talk she’d brush her off, thought mike was over exaggerating, being dramatic

there’s one particular fic that’s tagged “you won’t like [character] much at first” and i feel like that’s how this would play out. and then carter does a hell of a lot of work on herself, works on becoming someone she’d like to be around, reaches out to mike again

and this time when she goes to visit mike’s prepared. and they talk, and actually the hardest part of that is finding out mike’s forgiven her for all of her nonsense?

like. jeff’s so off kilter bc she comes there expecting to grovel, basically, and mike’s like. i forgave you years ago dude. it was hard, but it was better for me, for my life, to let go of that anger & pain. to let go of you

   oliver was born in kent, england. he’s the youngest in his family of three, having an older brother and sister w/ two loving parents. when he was nine, his family packed up and moved to southern california, where they resided until oliver left for college on the east coast - his family trading off between living back in england and on the west coast throughout the year. upon moving to a new country at a young age, oliver truly found himself via escaping into various books and movies. often attempting to write his own and would force encourage his siblings to act his skits/plays out for his parents enjoyment. growing up, oliver also enjoyed playing all types of sports ( his parents kind of threw him in hoping he’d make friends ), but when it came down to it, athletic abilities-wise, there truly wasn’t anything that he wasn’t ‘ good ‘ at, and that’s simply because he’s always been such a competitive individual / as well as a perfectionist. that competitive/perfectionist energy caused him to go home and practice a skill or trick for hours in order to be able to come back the next day and whoop everyone’s asses. throughout highschool ; oliver was a v dedicated student. although he’s a bit reckless and loved to goof off, he was always acing classes and applying himself. he genuinely cares for others, you could’ve seen his ass volunteering at a soup kitchen with his mom on sundays and what not, as well as take part in various clubs and sports ! just SOFT and sportythings.

   post-high school, oliver attended NYU double majoring in film & television and dramatic writing. despite his extensive and well received portfolio, oliver has always been a perfectionist and overcritical of his work, unwilling to share his projects with anyone until he deems them to be ~ perfect ~ himself. after graduating, he spent a year traveling, trying to find a bit of inspiration around him and taking up odd jobs to get some $$ of his own, dog walking, attempting his best at being a handy man, etc !! he moved back home to socal, and eventually made his way up to st.helen’s after he was sent a job posting for the bakery in town !! although he knows he doesn’t want to pursue a career in baking forever, he’s enjoying his time while trying to find a bit more muse for his future film&writing career.

   overall, oliver can come off as a bit reserved, and distant whether that be a result of his untrusting nature of others, or simply unfamiliarity. it takes a bit of time before he feels comfortable to share his true opinion / commentary / only doing so when he feels secure to do so. he’s not necessarily unfriendly, just a bit distant / lost in his thoughts. which varies, as with most ppl ofc, upon person to person and his level of comfortability among them. despite his often lack of conversation, he abhors an uncomfortable silence to settle and will fill it with nonsense to simply avoid the feeling altogether. so, if you ever want to catch him rambling, just making him uncomfortable dkjfngdf. he definitely approaches most things with a bit of ‘ tough love ‘ . he doesn’t mind getting into a quarrel or two if he knows its worth the outcome he’s envisioned. oliver will tell others when they are fucking up, and if they are throwing a punch as a result - catch him leaning into it, which explains his bout of reckless antics. he can come off as a know it all, when it comes to advice giving, but more so because he thinks he’s really good at analyzing others and situations they are in, not necessarily because he’s lived through them himself, he’s just rather intuitive and able to empathize quite easily with others despite his verbal admittance of it. when it comes down to this binches reckless bits, he just feels so intensely that he ends up numbing himself in the aftermath of it all ( especially bc he’s definitely not sharing those feelings with the people around him ), therefore he’s willing to put himself into harms way in order to get a bit of that - happiness / pain, it doesn’t matter to him as long as he no longer feels overwhelmed by numbness. so, if ya see him with some scrapes and stitches ~ mind ya business. but he’ll likely try to drag somebody else into it, and make it seem like it was their idea. but if he is truly comfortable with somebody, he walks a fine line of won’t stop talking, especially if it’s an interest of his, and comfortable silence.

he is a CANCER, therefore in this essay i will..... kidding but here’s some fun cancer info i saw that applies to my bb !! at first he appears to be wistful, sarcastic ( maybe a lil crabby ) , shy, distant and mysterious. this personality remains if he isn’t completely comfortable around somebody. but overall, that’s just his facade, his ‘smokescreen’ of sorts to scare off the world from his outwards persona. underneath that layer ( makes me think of shrek metaphor with onions // don’t mind me ), BUT he’s gentle, kind and affectionate ( if you manage to make it to that level * bell dings * ) !!! overall, oliver is a sensitive soul, a bit emotional although he’d rather d*e than show that to others. likely will internalize anything that can hurt his feelings / a low blow and will do something chaotic as a result later on bc of it. very polite, and a little worldly, he is truly the epitome of old-school gentlemanly manners. chivalry coming as a second nature to him !!

that was getting ramble-y, so continuing HERE. but when it comes to romance, as per the cancer man, the concept of love is a mystery, one that oliver is trying to attain. however, his shyness and innate distrust of others make it difficult for him to allow himself to fall in love. his guard is always up when it comes to his emotions, and it’ll take a bit of prodding before he’s willing to speak up on what’s desired from him. he’s v picky when it comes to finding the “ partner of his dreams “ - but he’s def willing to throw himself into the romance of the situation, i.e. buying flowers, riding white horses, and slaying metaphorical dragons. the traditional side means that he will shower his partner with thoughtful gifts, wine and dine them in the best restaurants, and try to grant their every wish. he will take the garbage out, fix that wobbly shelf, navigate on road trips, and kill more so trap and release bugs for his partner, and most important of all he will do it all without being asked. his loyalty and keen attention to the needs and wants of his potential partner. so basically, more so willing to showcase through actions than speak on it. it’s the little things, right ??!?!?! he def cherishes not just the act of being in a relationship, but what it means to become one with another person in mind, body, and soul.

prides himself on being able to make a mean cup of coffee, likely the worst person to watch a movie with bc he knows exactly how it’s going to end after only watching five minutes of it, he has a godawful sense of direction, will walk in circles for fifteen minutes before even raising a question about it/noticing ( but he refuses to acknowledge it. )

his house, car, workspace, junk drawer, closet….you name it - it’s organized, practically sparkling. often times arranged by color, and / or style. nothing is ever out of place, and if it is - there’s trouble brewing. but, more than anything, if he’s visiting somebody’s place and it’s messy, he will spend a solid thirty minutes picking everything up before doing whatever it is that was intended.

likes : reading, flowers, handwritten notes/letters, deep cleaning, baking, curating soundtracks for his film projects, watching the history channel and true crime docs and playing / watching hockey !!

dislikes : artichoke, clutter, sandals ( fkjgh ), unrealistic plotlines in movies &+ burnt coffee.

habits : smoking cigarettes - although he’s been meaning to quit. likely has a severe caffeine addiction, although he’s now normalized having six cups of coffee throughout his day. he’s an early riser, no matter how little the amount of sleep he’s received, he’s always the first to rise - for his early morning runs !!

strengths: creative, insightful, inspiring, convincing, determined and passionate, decisive, altruistic, intuitive !!

weaknesses: sensitive, extremely private, perfectionist, low-key always needs to have a cause / purpose, can burn out easily !! 

overall : oliver truly strives to be kind, and genuinely wants for everyone to get along. treat people with kindness and the like. he has the best of intentions, but often times that can get a bit muddled with the way he goes about things due to his bit of chaotic energy / as well as his often points of getting lost in his thoughts. he won’t realize he’s been quiet for the last three hours unless it’s mentioned to him. he will do anything to lighten a dark mood, and will sacrifice / throw himself under the bus if its needed. however, he also is the type to cause the dark mood depending on the day. wahoo! his more reckless antics increase when he’s feeling a bit emotional !! but he’ll likely try and convince somebody to propose the idea so it’s not on him.

in an attempt to throw himself into the town’s traditions and what not, after moving to st. helen’s oliver decided it was upon himself to put on a very spooo0ooky haunted house! so, catch him converting his home into a haunted house for the month of october !!! nothing cheesy either !! it’s more a psychological scare dkjgn with some gore elements !! EnTeR iF yOu DaRe !!!

he bounced around playing sports growing up, but favored ice hockey and field lacrosse out of them all.

HE WANTS TO JOIN A BOOKCLUB PLEASE !!!!!!!! or at least have some casual moments of silence with another reading. plz and tysm.

he is a vegetarian ! he has been since his freshman year of high school and has no plans on eating seafood/meat ever again.

( 1 / 1 ) - RIDE OR DIE / CHAOTIC COMPANION : it would be wrong to say one is the more likely the bad influence over the other, although oliver may just be. these two find themselves bounding into, well hell, ( i guess??? ) together. playing on one anothers impulsiveness and if one ends up in the back of a police car, the other is handcuffed to them. and yet despite the length of their potential injuries, they find themselves thinking of something crazier to subject them to the next time around.

( 1 / 1 ) - GUARDIAN ANGEL / GOOD INFLUENCE : with ollie being a bit chaotic in nature, he needs somebody that is likely going to steer him clear from all the ideas that’ll bring him to the brink of disaster. he’s impulsive and in that desperate attempt to feel again, he’s very likely to bring a bit of mayhem upon himself. so while they may be worrying and attempting to talk his ideas down, he’s trying to get them to go along with his plan. it may be rare that he actually takes their advice, but when he does it seems to be for the best.

( 0 / 1 ) - PARTY FRIEND : these two know how to have a good time together. despite the amount of alcohol they are throwing back and the shenanigans they find themselves in as a result, this is a time where they also find themselves confiding in one another. if you look at their camera rolls, it’s likely they have tons of embarrassing and unflattering videos and pics of one another, in between their sob-worthy confessionals and venting/rants. these two trust one another, and although they love getting wreckT together, they find themselves discussing very raw and personal details. likely the only person oliver confides in, simply bc he’s completely plastered.

personality.

first things first, she was born on january 26th, 1995, which means she’s a twenty-five year old aquarius. at her core, she’s quite independent and self-oriented. she isn’t afraid to push for what she wants, even if no one else in a group of people will agree with her. she likes to spend time exploring her own ideas and plans rather than following a crowd. she’s bold & very social  —  she has a reputation as a social butterfly, for better or for worse. she starts conversations and doesn’t mind leading them, but that can make her come off as a bit overbearing at times.

( TW PANIC DISORDER )  she was diagnosed with panic disorder in 2014, although it’s something that hardly anyone outside of aria knows about, even if they’re close to her. she definitely has bad days, but for the most part, it’s not something that controls her in any way, nor is it something she discusses. she might shrug off other peoples’ problems from time to time, but for the most part, she likes to look after people. can definitely show this in the form of tough love occasionally, but anyone who spends a lot of time with her will find that she’s a natural caretaker. will nurture tf out of friends, groupmates, and even potential partners.

history.

shinhye was born in jeju & she’s the youngest of four children. she’s the only girl. had to learn from a young age to be  LOUD  in order to get what she wanted. was notorious in her neighborhood for throwing temper tantrums and stressing her parents out.

her family was by no means well-off  ( her mother is a haenyeo and her father is a taxi driver )  but she got most things she asked for because otherwise, she’d throw fits. very high maintenance, often called the princess of the house sarcastically.

ended up developing an interest in music after she saw her oldest brother performing at a local talent show! he was a wannabe rapper and although shinhye knew that already, this was the first time she saw him perform. thought it was neat how the crowd looked at him and seemed to enjoy his performance. she was only 12 at this time, but she started to hang out w him and learn about music/rap from him.

long story short, she ended up becoming a trainee at age 14 and he..... did not. very bitter because it was his dream, after all, and once again, shinhye had gotten what she wanted while no one else did. her parents told her to think about it and encouraged her not to go through with it because they knew it’d hurt her brother, but she was like :/ sorry but i do what i want.

hated training, only kept at it because she was stubborn and didn’t want to go home.

debuted in 2011 w/ aria. she was only 16 at the time. despite being labeled the main rapper of the group, she rarely got any rap lines (still rarely does) and that was just the cherry on top of already hating her group’s concept. had a more-or-less androgynous style as a kid, hated wearing shades of pink and pastels, dresses, skirts, etc. talked mad shit on the dl, but didn’t complain much verbally bc she didn’t want to bring the team down.

also had to change a lot about herself around this time. i.e, she spoke in a jeju dialect but had to Get Rid of that, naturally has a husky voice but was encouraged to make it higher-pitched, smoother. had so much repressed anger around this time tbh.

anyway aria got popular really quickly and she was not party-rocking. started getting hot flashes, zoning out a lot, developed a phobia of paparazzi that made her uneasy around any kind of flashing lights, suspicious cars, etc. hates the idea of being watched, even though she’s on the world’s stage.

despite all this though, she maintained her image as a social butterfly & class clown. publicly thought of as an idol who  lives  to make others laugh, doesn’t care about her image much. think apink’s bomi. that’s how she is.

still deeply unhappy with her career choice, distant from her family, even distant from others within the industry despite being publicly social. but she usually tries to find a silver lining??? kind of??? it issss what it isssss.

7. What do you dislike about your favourite season?

i think season 2 is the best, but as i’ve said before, my favourite is 4 solely because the first few eps i watched were from s4. i think season 4 is very solid and even though it’s a season that HURTS BAD because of everything happening between sam and dean, i think the show earns the conflict for the most part. the literal only thing that still haunts me is that the STUPID VOICEMAIL THAT GETS ALTERED IS NEVER ADDRESSED. like i hate more than anything that sam still thinks dean said those things. like i know jared’s said that sam knows dean loves him but i don’t care!!! sam /and/ dean deserve to know the voicemail was changed.

OH also literally everything with anna milton. she deserved better <3 sorry the fridged you and gave part of your arc to a man, queen.

also sam and dean should’ve found out cas let sam out of the panic room.

8. Thoughts on Sam’s demon blood arc

i love sam’s demon blood arc. his hot girl summer! in all seriousness, it makes perfect sense. mystery spot sets it up that sam goes dark when he doesn’t have dean, and s4 is the natural progression of that. i love sam being hellbent on revenge, and the blood drinking was hot sorry not sorry. like obviously the end result wasn’t stellar and the handling of the demon blood as an addiction was handled rather shittily in the show, but overall this arc is near and dear to me and if i couldn’t have the boy king, i’m glad i got this instead. and it brings up some really interesting concepts that get explored really well in fic.

9. Thoughts on the Moc arc

i hate this arc mostly because like dean was terrible...which makes sense, but even after the mark was gone it’s like... he never /really/ pulls himself out of that place. it also just dragged on for FAR too long. like it didn’t need to be like 30 episodes or however long. i do like that it gave us demon!dean being like sexythreatening, and that scene of sam cradling dean’s face and begging him to tell him that he had to kill all those people and just the general sam is dean’s colette of it all. also the end of s10 with sam on his knees and dean telling him to close his eyes is deeply fucked up and i love it for that reason and obviously that happened bc of the MOC storyline.

10. Fave underrated ep

i am highkey obsessed with 1x04 phantom traveller, 2x07 the usual suspects and 4x19 jump the shark and i feel like most people don’t really care about those episodes or bring them up much. phantom traveller is just interesting bc i think the character moments are fun and i am obsessed with plane crashes for some reason. the usual suspects i just adore because it’s really a great exploration of HOW WELL sam and dean know each other and just how alike they are. and unfortunately i really like the cop lady in this one. jump the shark was the second episode of supernatural i ever saw and for some reason something in my brain latched onto adam and never let go. i love him so much (i know it’s not really him in the ep but ukno) and i love how much you learn about sam and dean through it too.

11. Thoughts on BMOL

boring. like...the actors were not good at their accents. they wanted what bela talbot had in s3. i just didn’t find ‘the british are evil’ a compelling storyline in a supernatural show.... like girl i live in real life you don’t need to preach to me about the british. also like they set up ketch to be evil like worse than toni who i already hate because she tortures/sexually assaults sam by having him kill magda i guess? but then they end up redeeming him and he survives longer than both mick (affectionate) and toni (derogatory), like seriously one of the worst Big Bads they’ve ever had.

12. Thoughts on Mary

to be honest, i think bringing her back was kind of a stupid idea in the sense that the ENTIRE SHOW starts because of her death. but i felt like HAVING DONE THAT, trying to deconstruct her image as like this nuclear housewife was compelling and the whole clash of sam and dean who just want their mom versus mary who left her kids as a an infant and a small child and now has these grown men who are older than her needing things she doesn’t know how to give was very interesting. and i wish they’d done more with that. 

16. Any criticisms of their world building/lore

well i think everyone’s said it better than me that they can’t seem to get their stance on monsters straight at all and the show suffers for it. i also hate how like the later seasons especially just blatantly retcon so much. the prime example is the garden of eden in s5 vs s15.... the s5 version was so much more interesting and i hate that they brought it back just to destroy their own lore. the whole concept of the abrahamic god being like the ‘real’ god vs other gods just being minor annoyances didn’t like...make sense or feel good either. i also would’ve loved more exploration of like what the fuck it means to be a vessel and also exploration of other monsters/urban legends. like ok we get it ghosts/demons/vampires/werewolves sure w/e but there’s so much to pull from. it got repetitive and there’s so many other things they could’ve tried. hell the SECOND EPISODE of the show mentions black dogs and we never actually encounter one. or like chimeras... like there’s just plenty to dig into and they just get lazy.

17. What did you like about s15?

15x20 <3 also just...jack....that’s my son! MICHAEL/ADAM IN 15X08!!!! i think there were a couple moments i liked in like...the gambler and last holiday, and i thought belphagor was funny. oh! also sam’s nightmare visions were kinda fun even tho they led back to lucifer :/

18. Thoughts on Lucifer

he was a really excellent and intimidating villain in s5.... and frankly i enjoyed hallucifer as well because sure he was presented comedically but he was a deeply dark presence hanging over sam as a reminder of what he suffered. everything after that...sucked!!! it sucked!!!!! overstayed his welcome, letting him out of the cage again totally nullifies sam’s sacrifice and frankly he lost every smidge of intimidation factor he ever had. he was just annoying and whiny and pointless and sam should’ve killed him <3 fuck that guy.

this was meant to be short... and then it wasnt... sorry.

kripke: PEAK SUPERNATURAL. racist AND sexist but like i frankly do not care because the actually storytelling is so GOOD. COHERENT. i long for what could’ve been had the strike not kneecapped s3 and we’d gotten boyking, but hell the arc we DID get... so good. so fulfilling. aesthetics go off the charts. character dynamics so good!!! conflicts are earned!!!! there was a fucking vision here and it was unique and interesting and the show was COMMITTED TO IT. literally iconic television i love her so much. eric kripke needs a therapist but i’m glad he wrote this show instead of going to see one. 

gamble: sera THEE gamble.... overarching storylines kinda weak, but SO FUN! i had fucking fun! soulless sam is a comedian, godstiel was the last time cas was remotely interesting, like!!!! she gave us everything!!!!! gets slandered way too much by this hell fandom like yes the leviathans were stupid but the were FUN and the character moments in s6-s7!!! so good!!!! lots of excellent MOTW eps as well, which... as we know...i love. when the show lost gamble, it lost something great, i’ll die on this hill. i love u #girlboss.

carver: there’s a lot of good here and a lot i despise. dean steadily grows darker throughout the show but there’s like a real VEER into being awful in s9 that the show never recovers from. it makes dean very unlikeable for the rest of its run, mostly by virtue of the show not realizing how unlikeable it’s made dean because it needs him to always be right so the fact that he’s basically turned into john is never like....addressed in any meaningful way. some storylines (MOC!!) dragged on for too long, while others were way too short (TRIALS!!!) but ultimately i think there were some good ideas here and moments i’m fond of. season 11 is Beautiful. i love her so much. there’s some really excellent eps in s11 and the character moments are good.

dabb: i literally hate it here (jack sweetie you are not included in this assessment you’re doing great). it was just stupid. the characterizations of EVERYBODY sucked and fell flat. way too obsessed with pandering to the loudest faction on twitter. took the wreckage of dean that carver left and full destroyed him. like straight up could’ve done something meaningful if they’d bothered to address it at all but they literally didn’t ever make dean be accountable for his actions??? can’t tell u what cas was doing it was so forgettable he obviously had no purpose literally the only scenes i remember were a couple where he’s being cute with jack and that one ep where he and sam go to that old-timey town and sam gets brainwashed. sam like... exists, and his character is intact but it’s only intact because the writers that were left didn’t want to bother giving him anything meaty to do to so the were like *spins wheel* leadership arc that goes nowhere, and he just exists being kind and compassionate and putting up with too much shit. BUT HE HAD REALLY FUCKING EXCELLENT MOMENTS WITH JACK and that alone is why i think it’s worth the slog. sam/jack is my favourite dynamic on the show following sam/dean so...unfortunately based on that.... i can’t just burn the whole dabb era but seriously... way to make every character a hollow, one-dimensional shell.

There. and his backstory gets explained 5 seconds before he dies and it’s not even that interesting. wHyYyyy would u leave Time Lord/Cyberman Hybrid for the last 5 minutes and then have them just stand around doing nothing!!!! why on GOD’S GREEN EARTH would u take the genuinely interesting concept of a cyberman zealot/cult leader and then just be like ‘ye so he wants to be a robot and also he has a big Death Bomb now for some reason’. like having the master point out that it’s a dumb plan doesn’t make it any less of a dumb plan aaaahhhhhhhhh

BUT ALL THAT ASIDE all that nonsense aside.......... what is this timeless child thing, really. like what does it add to the doctor as a character. what does it add to the time lords as a concept? like. the Big Shocking reveal is that...... time lords are bastards, lied about shit and manipulated an innocent child? like YA BRO WE BEEN KNEW, that is exactly what they did w/ the master in the end of time (which. i also thought was dumb but w/e). like this ain’t new, chibs! except now it’s about them doing it to the doctor and now it’s Revealed that the doctor is the Most Specialest Person In Time Lord History and like

“oh but morbius doctors explained!!” u think the casual audience knows or cares about the fuckin morbius doctors??? im not a casual viewer and i don’t even give a shit about the morbius doctors. im sure people do!!! i know people do But God Jesus Christ the last thing dr who needs to do is continuously go back into its own history to fix plot holes that really aren’t important to any of the characters at all. it’s a 56 year old show, there’s gonna be inconstencies and unless “““fixing”“““  those inconstistencies leads to actual interesting stories i Just Do Not Give A Shit

and like i get the feeling that this whole thing was smth chris chibnall has had in his head since forever, like this was his Big Bold Plan when he was a young guy watching classic who. and like. i get wanting to do that story now, but... the show has moved on, the world has moved on. he can do whatever he likes, but things have in fact happened, and sometimes you gotta adjust your big dream story to account for those things that have changed. sure, every showrunner is completely entitled to do with the show what they want, BUT the audience is still experiencing the show as one continuous story, and you gotta take that into account unless you want it to be super jarring for them! you want the master to blow up gallifrey, but gallifrey has been blown up + brought back in very recent history? find another way. this story could easily have been done without destroying gallifrey. i mean, have the master kill some time lords, sure, whatever. but keep them around! have them react to the doctor finding out the truth, have them confront each other!!! isn’t that a much more interesting story, anyway?

here are my main points:

- like the cartmel plan before it, it takes away far more mystery than it adds. it takes the vast and endless Unknown and turns it into like... a “mystery” plot the size of your average scandinoir thriller. before, the doctor’s life before an unearthly child could be anything you want. now it’s.... this

- the actual execution of it is bad. the dr sits in a cage for 40 minutes and is shocked and then she gets over it in that same episode

- it robs the doctor of a certain kind of agency and accountability. instead of a privileged time lord who got better through their travels and companions, now they’re an abused, adopted child who was always an outcast. and that’s not like..... an inherently bad story!! i get why that resonates with people, i do. BUT BUT BUT....... why does that have to be their story. why does that have to get shoved into the doctor’s backstory when that could be the story of a companion? why are you replacing one story when you could be creating new ones?

i think actually that’s my Main Gripe with all of this.

why is this the doctor’s story?

for an era that is supposed to be all about inclusivity and diversity and Space For All, why is the end result that the companions get shoved to the side in favour of doing gallifrey and the master again, in favour of Lore, in favour of the fuckin morbius doctors? why would you dangle jo martin in front of my face and then reduce her to the Magical Black Woman trope in this ep? why does the character who has up to this point been portrayed by 13 white men and 1 white woman, get the backstory about being an adoptee, why are you making all these past doctors people of colour and of different genders, instead of just... acknowledging that doctor who’s past wasn’t very diverse, and forging ahead with NEW stories instead. 

doctor who thrives on change, but this isn’t.... like it’s not going forward. it’s looking back and prioritising the past instead of focusing on the present, on the new generation. i didn’t like s11 much, but not using any past monsters was a good refreshing choice! no, they weren’t all great, but we got stuff like demons of the punjab and ITYA out of it, stories that were genuinely great and new. and in many ways s12 was an improvement, but going so full-in on classic monsters and stories... it felt like a step back.

i want new stories. tell me about yaz. tell me about ryan. tell me about places that aren’t england or gallifrey or other places we’ve been to. tell me about monsters that aren’t the daleks or cybermen or time lords. tell me about new mistakes the doctor makes. let her fuck up now, in the present. let her make bad decisions, let her do shitty things now, not lifetimes ago. let graham, yaz and ryan fuck up. let the fam clash with each other, really clash, not this half-assed stuff we had this season. tell me new stories with these new characters, that i still feel like i barely know despite having had two full seasons with them.

How old were you when you & your F/O(s) first met? (Idk if you mean my irl age or the age I headcanon my self insert to be, so I'll save myself the trouble of trying to think of an age on the spot and just say when I started f/oing each character, I started f/oing when I was like 9 but I didn't know there was a name for it (I age up my self insert for adult f/os though to make everything, y'know, ☆~legal~☆) )

The character I still f/o today that I've had for the longest would have to be Cedric the Sorcerer. I developed a huge crush on him when I was 14 and to this day at the ripe old age of 17 I still simp. I have a self-insert/OC for him that I headcanon to be in her early 30's because Cedric is canonically in his late 30's (and I'm tired of women in media always being 20 years younger than their male love interests).

I started to f/o Beetlejuice when I was... I think 15? It was 2018 when I found out about the musical and decided to illegally stream a bootleg of it watch it for the first time and I got instantly wrapped up in how outgoing and flirtatious he was, he was the solidifier in my awful taste in men.

I became smitten with Spinel a while later last summer when the Steven Universe movie came out, so I was 16 going on 17. I didn't fall in love with her right away but I'm a huge nerd for vintage music and aesthetics so her 1930's feel and theme song grabbed me pretty quick, and then I began to feel the feelings during that fight scene at the end with Steven bc I like women who can fight and protecc 👉👈 I just fell in love with her more once I started reading all the imagines and x readers.

Iida's been kind of a background on/off f/o for me for about half a year. He has potential and I love him but I'm just not super invested in the show so it's hard to weed out content of just him (and maybe a few other characters I like).

And my latest f/o, Jervis Tetch aka the Mad Hatter (Batman's most iconic villain, I know) I started to f/o this past month. Or maybe two months, I have no concept of time anymore but I was 17 (and I still am!)

Does your F/O have any silly nicknames for you? Absolutely! Beetlejuice's default for me is "babes", but he switches it up once in a while with a "doll face" or a "baby cakes". If he's feeling it he calls me "hot stuff" which I can never recive with a straight face, I get all red and laugh.

Spinel likes the gushy mushy petnames like "sugar-baby-apple-pie" or "honey-bun" or "suga'". But her favourite thing to call me is "doll" ❤

Jervis is very much a Victorian Gentleman so he addresses me as "my dear" very often, he may switch it up sometimes with "my sweet" or "my love" which are more petnames than silly nicknames but still cute u//w//u

Cedric is all about cute petnames, uses the super sweet "we are definatelty a married couple" ones like "my dear", "darling", and "honey" ❤💞💗💖💕

Idk if Iida is about nicknames, but I don't imagine he would only call me by my name. Something mature and simple but still sweet, like "hun" or "darling".

OK SEE, LIKE-- the writers seem to forget that before s1 ended they showed larry and rita living on their own for months and doing just fine w/o chief. technically there is no reason for doom patrollers to stay w/ him but if they leave then like... there is no plot. as much as i love the concept of all of them healing in peace and quiet, but if theres no chief and no dorothy then theres no plot, there are no sex demons or weird cults coming after them. 

unfortunately, chief pushes the narrative forward so thats why they’re still living with him. it doesnt make much sense to stay with someone like him but theyre not real people, theyre fictional characters. maybe this is why its a little bit frustrating to watch... it feels like retreading stuff that was already discussed. 

in the comics, doom patrol stayed with the chief but its bc they had a mission as a team, they hated niles and didnt trust him at all, but they knew he brought something to the team (knowledge and expertise). they cared about superheroics (as in helping people) more than they cared about a chief-free life... so that made more sense than what’s currently happening in the show. and it was a very interesting dynamic (for me).

in the show i think they’re trying to push the narrative that the reason why they still allow chief around is dorothy but none of them have interacted with her in a meaningful way (except for rita ... the mom character). i dont think larry has even said a single word to her. 

THAT SAID, this is just the beginning of the new season so maybe im being a little bit too harsh.

WELL technically the last fandom i *was in* was DB- and the last fandom thing *i saw* was Pop’n music, and the last one i *partook in* was KH... so distraction is distraction; triple whammy time idec

How I feel about this character: now the only reason i ever got into DB in the first place was because of Frieza- that i saw on the cover of the manga, while buying groceries with my mom. Like when she would go and pay, she’d let me go to the ‘kid’s books’ section, who was right next to the cashiers. And there was that ONE DB manga with final form Frieza on it, and was like WOW and begged my mom to buy it- she did; she didn’t know DB and never really knew that it wasn’t the best thing to buy for 6 years old me, lol. So uhm that got me into DB and after buying like 10 DB manga books with pretty (but deceptive) covers, i somehow got that one DS game- Supersonic Warriors 2. I had no idea there was an anime (believe it or not), and as you can guess had no knowledge of the movies, so this game introduced me to quite a bunch of characters- including Cooler! ... Tho uhm ngl it wasn’t an instant love like Frieza- i was still 6 so i was like ´purple frieza with prettier colors’ and that’s it. Fast foward because this is LONG LOL SORRY but got to know Salza and (vaguely) Cooler’s general motivations thanks to PS2’s Budokai Tenkaichi 2, around 2015 i got back into DB, and actually watched their movie... And honestly i had no idea that HE was like that- truly bitter towards his brother AND father, and had to actually prove himself; and only to get nothing from the two when he PUSHED HIMSELF SO FAR HE ACHIEVED A TRANSFORMATION *NO ONE ELSE* HAS ACHIEVED. Like let’s be real, Frieza is a VILE person, beyond cruel- but Cooler? He’s somehow worse, because he has reasons to be bitter- to me it can fuel his cruelty even further than Frieza and idk. It’s great. I’ll come back to it further in this but i feel this is a VERY interesting concept for a ‘frieza sibling’ villain.

Any/all the people I ship romantically with this character: no one- Cooler’s super aromantic (and ace) in my head. Doesn’t even understand the concept of friendship, so love? Lol no. But i hc that Dore is romantically attracted to him though- Cooler has no idea, and maybe that’s for the best, i think he might react badly if he knew.

My favorite non-romantic relationship for this character: surprise, surprise, CoolerxSalza lol. I might reiterate things i already said/mentioned, but. I think Salza genuinely believes in Cooler- the latter kind of ‘saved’ him from Brench, a place where he was the very best and that bored him almost to death; and Salza was always sadistic, so the fact that he not only got a job about making ppl miserable (or better- killing them), but actually gets to do it with someone else (even if it’s in professional terms), Salza just. REALLY looks up to Cooler. But as his right hand, he actually got to witness Cooler talking with his father/brother, and how they argue- that made Salza realize that, as tough Cooler is, he’s a real person and certain things can get on his nerves. And so Salza comforting Cooler is. Very important to me

My unpopular opinion about this character: h-he.. trans,. Boy- no but legit uhm tbh. he’s better than Frieza in some ways, fight me. Much more potential. Proof: how ToP Frieza was just re-iterations and nothing new- the only thing new being that last attack w goluband that’s it. While Cooler! There’s so much you can explore- feelings-wise especially. Because imo he HAS feelings but he was taught to show otherwise

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: honestly? As much as i’d like him back in a movie, something i kept thinking/hoping would happen was Cooler and Trunks’ interaction potential. Like both have harsh fathers, and idk they could have some kind of relationship based on that? Like not ANYWHERE near friendship- or anything like that; more like a ‘i thought i was the only one with this problem’ kind of relationship.

Favorite friendship for this character: SALZA LOL and DBHeroes Trunks, even if it breaks my hope for them bounding out of convienance but also bc of dad issues

My crossover ship: honestly HONESTLY Satori from 2hu. They’re like, the same. Asocial creepy older sibling that, in-universe, isn’t very liked, while their younger is going around and being a nuisance at best. They could talk over tea, and put their younger parasites in cages while doing so

How I feel about this character: i love everything about him? The fact that he’s very visually different and unique from all other characters and in general, how no one seems to know what he really is, and especially. ESPECIALLY! How he apparentely never talks, and expresses himself via dancing, by taking poses that look like kanjis and symbols. Also apparentely he’s super in touch with nature and ‘the gods’, so he’s never seen with anyone else? Asocial creature... Good!

Any/all the people I ship romantically with this character: he doesn’t know what a romance is. And he wouldn’t eat one because honestly i’m not even sure he has a mouth. The only ‘proof’? Sign? He has SOMETHING is that one pose where he’s smoking a pipe/using a flute. and according to the creators his ‘likes’ is Love, but honestly i think it’s the kind of love that goes beyond mere romance. The love of living, being alive. Deep love.

My favorite non-romantic relationship for this character: well. Technically the only thing he communicates to- (intentionally) is the player? So what if he’s aware of the player- are they one of his gods? I think that’s interesting to think about.

My unpopular opinion about this character: he’s a very unique character, much better than the protagonists that look good in the Pop’n music style, but would like any other anime human otherwise. If anything, proof of that is that one game where the style DOES change to an anime-like one, and Yima still looks unique while the others are undistinguisable if you take off their colors and/or features

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: HONESTLY i know this will never happen and maybe that’s a good thing? But i think he should be shown with Hoshi no Hito- which is kind of the entity antithesis of Yima. Yima = unknown entity that strives for Love, the gods, nature/life/fertility. Hoshi no Hito = unknown entity that strives for ??? Who knows actually but is tied to ‘Paradise of the universe’ and ‘Heaven’; the latter according to one of his theme songs, that has VERY strange imagery and looks stranger than Yume Nikki, making that ‘Paradise’ notion kind of. Like are you sure?? But yeah they’re similar while contradicting each other, it’s very strange and honestly not sure if it’s intentional, but if it is: do something with it, you’ve got something VERY unique on your hands! Do this and i’ll actually get into this series tbh.

How I feel about this character: me! BIG GAY! FOR XEMNAS! SINCE 2011!!!! Like bruh i remember i made a Gary Stu to date all my fav KH boys (Xem, Zexion and Vanitas- that are still my top faves. Been so for 9 years then lol?! Im old.) and my totally-not-a-secret-selfinsert would actually be in a relationship with Xemnas- even if back then, Xem wasn’t REMOTELY in character lol. So somehow it took me YEARS to realize how truly great Xemnas is? Like before i was only like ‘he’s one of the most handsome 3D men of all time’. Now i am like exactly that, BUT! He’s also a cult leader, not entirely human, and a mean villain so 👍👍👍. And while i have mixed feelings abt the whole ‘he lied to the orgXIII about them not able to have feelings’ thing, proves he’s truly evil and/or emotionless.

My favorite non-romantic relationship for this character: well ok this is one somewhat implied and never shown, and i was going to do a picture about it (i’m still going to do it lol) but. According to Nomura in an interview, Xemnas and Zexion have a teacher-student relationship? Which makes a lot of sense? Because: 1) Zexion is the ‘kid that mostly grew up in the cult, so doesn’t know anything else’ trope. 2) their powers can somewhat relate imo? Zexion has illusion powers. Xemnas has nothingness powers- and aren’t illusions nothing, in a way...? That one might be just me tbh- but i can kind of see them talking about their powers together. 3) Zexion is a ‘schemer’- he’s no stranger to manipulating people- wouldn’t it make sense if he learmed that from Xemnas? I honestly doubt he learned it from Lexaeus, Vexen or Ansem- and Xigbar is WAY too subtle. Might have learned from Xaldin as well but legit i think it’s Xem who taught it to him.

My unpopular opinion about this character: i don’t think he should be redeemed- they avtually didn’t do that, which i’m glad about. He lied to people for 10 YEARS about them being unable to feel, all that so he could softcore brainwash them later so they could be more like him, so not worth redeeming lol...

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: ... BUT... tbh. I think the fact that he’s Terra’s nobody should have been much more explored. Before kh3 i even hoped Xem would have what i call an ‘asriel moment’, as in ‘i’m a bad guy but in the past i was a completely different person (literally) and let me have a breakdown over it’. Also hoped that would have made Terra’s Kh3 design- as in Xemnas’ look (long hair, face) with Terra’s colors... but no they didn’t do that, instead they did something that kind of makes sense since Xem died in kh2, but also did a weird thing with Terra that i don’t get and frankly don’t care about bc it doesn’t involve Xemnas

Favorite friendship for this character: again i don’t think he understands friendship... but i love the idea of Xigbar fucking with Xemnas and the latter tolerating it. I mean in canon it’s mostly shown that SAÏX is the right-hand man, but i like to think that it’s actually Xigbar but he doesn’t care and only annoys everyone

My crossover ship: not really a ship but. Since Xemnas and Cell’s JP Voice actor is the same person... and that they’re both villains that really love themselves... interact
