Hard Day’s Night

Summary: After a long and grueling day from working, you are excited to get home to your girlfriend but not before getting a pretty funny text from her friend about how her day seemed to be going.

word count: 2k

a/n: the gif is my favorite thing ever and this was so fun to write too enjoys besties because i know i did. that episode was fun ask

warnings: fluff and Jen throwing it back, mention of Dennis ( for like a bit it’s fine ), cute jen.

You knew that ever since Jen got turned into a hulk, like her cousin, she’s always come home with interesting stories involving her new job, hero duties, and so on. Way before she even turned into the hulk, both of you made it a tradition to make each other dinner/order food depending on who gets there first. A nice hot meal with your favorite person while she gets to hear about how your day went at work and you get to hear about her whatever the fuck Dennis said at work again that made her want to punch her.

So after a couple of weeks where both of your schedules never seemed to match due to her new job with GLK/H while you had to turn in many presentations, both of you were excited to get to talk about how the day went for each of you, Jen most of all.

Jen ❤️❤️❤️: Getting home @ 8 pm babe, can’t wait to tell you about my day.

While you had been preparing a simple dinner for your girlfriend, Jen never knew that Nicki had sent you a video of her and what seemed to be Megan thee stallion dancing in her office. Not like simple dancing but throwing her ass back.

The caption only read “ MEGAN “ from Nicki and nothing else. No explanation to it either and you have to know what the fuck happened there, compared to your day of getting a free coffee. If you think about it kind of flex.

The lovely y/n: okay babe 🥺🥰🥰 can’t wait to hear what happened during your day.

30 minutes pass by and after completing your nightly skin routine, you hear the front door open and are met with Jen who looks super tired but also very excited at the same time. She immediately runs up to you to hug you, Jen was always a sucker for a good hug that’s for sure.

“ you ready for dinner Jen? I found a good recipe online and decided to try it,” you tell her and she nods with enthusiasm, waiting for the right time to tell you how her day went.

It’s no secret to anyone ( even her bartender knows) that she’s a big Megan Thee Stallion fan. The number of times you’d walk into her office at the da’s office to see her laser-focused on some papers with some of her songs in the background for motivation, Drunk Jen attempting to throw it back to some of her songs

And failing ( not to you though cause girlie could get it) or even her motivation playlist she’ll blast when she gets ready for work. She is the biggest Stan and you honestly find it funny.

You decided to let her tell you first how her day went while the both of you ate dinner. Of course, Jen let you talk about your day, how you got the free coffee, your coworker talking about her cat having babies, and even the orange stray cat by your apartment which you named cheddar cheese of course making an appearance when you got home from work.

“ out of all the things you name the cat and you choose cheddar cheese babe ?” She says trying to best to not laugh and you try to slap her lightly but she moves away in time for you to miss.

You’ll get her next time.

“ meanie,”

“ says the one who made fun of my name choices,” you say back to the brunette.

“ cheddar cheese for a cat? I beg to differ “

“ lame, but let’s move on past that babe, I would like to hear about your day,” you say as you put your attention on her and after a couple of seconds she realizes Nikki must have sent you the video from the office that she thought would be funny to film.

“ y/n did Nikki send you the video ??? “ she says with a pout on her face, a bit sad that she didn’t get to break the news about meeting one of her idols herself.

“ I need more explanation to that video because I don’t know what the fuck is going on with just Megan with full caps as the caption,” you tell her and she spills everything about her day.

How she went into the office trying to deal with all of Blonsky's stuff, Wong being late to the hearing and almost thinking of fighting him herself because he literally portal why the fuck would he be late? You never hear about traffic in portals.

“ Like the man portals???? I’m no scientist but does he not have an assistant to help him or someone to remind him of stuff to do,” she says as the both of you sit on the couch, watching whatever tv show rerun is on. Thank fuck for the dishwashers because neither of you was in the mood to clean dishes.

She continues about the rest of her day, going to testify for Dennis as to whether he believed he could pull off a woman like Megan thee Stallion, then finding out that she was in the courtroom as the hearing was going on!!!!!!!

“I understand her being there since it has to do with someone impersonating her but she got to hear me talk and must have been interested in my job as a lawyer,” she continues to speak about the goddess that is Megan Thee Stallion, her words not yours.

She continues about how Megan had asked for her specifically because it would help her with the current problem she had been having, which you aren’t allowed to know of for legal reasons of course. She even had a game plan of how to win the case for Megan.

Either way, you can’t help but look at your girl with love and affection at how excited she was for this.

“ and then I told her that I’d ‘ kill for you Megan thee stallion’ which now that I hear now is a bit weird and OH MY GOD BABE WHAT THE FUCK WAS I THINKING, “ she says as she covers her face in embarrassment, shocked that it took her til she got home to realize why the woman had told her to dial back but then again, if anyone else was in her shoes they’d just be focused on her and now think before the spoke.

“ Jen,” you say as you remove her hands from her face,” she’s probably heard weirder things so I doubt that she’d remember it and just your sick-ass dance moves,”. Jen then covers her face again in embarrassment that Nikki filmed her dancing to Body and not caring who watches. Something that she’s only been told happens when she’s super drunk.

“ Can we talk more about Megan y/n? I have so much to talk about like the fact that Pink is very much her-

“ Jen,” you start which shuts her up,” I promise not to laugh if you tell me how you ended up dancing and how you very much failed to notice that your best friend was filming you”

‘ Will she make fun of me? like I know that she’s seen me do some stupid asf stuff but even Nikki tried her best not to laugh. Shit even if I heard the story I’d laugh too’, Jen thinks to herself and you poke her side to get her attention, wondering what’s taking her too long to tell the story.

“ Jen Honey, I promise not to laugh,” as she sees you cross your heart, even though something tells her not to say how it even happened.

“ so she wanted to see some of my sick-ass dance moves, as you say and I just gave her what she wanted in my opinion,” she said.

“ there’s more to this story I need to know Jen” you beg.

“I’m not lying “

“Bullshit, Jen! please tell me I won’t laugh I pinky promise,” you say trying your very best to put puppy eyes, something that she can’t say no to. She gives you one of her many savage Jennifer Walters looks to counter you and again, you pucker your lips.

Jen knows she’s close to winning this match against you, no way in hell that she’s gonna lose this one.

“ Pookie,” you tell your girlfriend as you pout your lips for added effect. That last move made the brunette immediately give up, sad again that you’ve somehow beat her again.

“ Why is it that you know the right time when to use that nickname on me y/n?” she asks. She really needs to work on that when she has the time.

“ Just me being a silly goose is all Jen,” you saw with an innocent smile.

Damm you and calling me that nickname,’ she thinks to herself as you laugh in defeat that she’s gonna be able to tell you the story in full.

And she does as she tells you how she came back from the courthouse to Holloway asking for her in his office to see the woman in an amazing pink suit, serving as always, asking for her, so she sends Megan to her office while they discuss detail. Jen goes to her office to see Megan looking amazing, they sign some papers then Megan says that she wants to see some of Jen's dance moves and after not even half a second of seeing the tall green woman dance along to her song, she had to interject. Jen failed to see you hold in a giggle because her moves when she’s happy or in a good mood never seem to be the best but you don’t ever want to hurt your feelings. Being that she’s probably on a high, best to tell her another time.

“ so that’s the complete story of how my day went,” she says with a smile, again very much on a high and excited for what’s to come.

“ How about you show me some of the dance moves she taught you, babe? because that video that Nikki sent me earlier does not do justice,” you say to her.

After a bit Jen gets off the couch, ready to show you some of the moves that she got taught. Lucky for you, Jen had her Megan playlist pinned to her Spotify so that she’d easily find it so she immediately went to that and played Body, which was the first song on the playlist.

Not even 30 seconds into the song, Jen’s easily throwing it back, as if she’s been doing this for years and you start to laugh right because you couldn't not do it.

“ You know if you find this shit so funny y/n how about YOU come over here and show me some of your dance moves too?” she asks you.

Oh? Is Jennifer trying to challenge you to a dance off ?

Looks like she’s chosen the wrong opponent to go against meaning this should be very fun for the both of you. Jen’s smile as she looks at you proves to be true.

“ Show you how the pros do it out here babe,” you tell her.

“ Sure”

“ i was fine watching you comfy on the couch tho Jen”

“ that’s just you can spend all day staring at my ass and you know it, babe”

“..... shut up and watch me dance Jen,” you say back to her who only stands quietly as she watches you dance in her opinion so much better than her. Looking at you with such amazement and adoration that makes you a bit more confident for the night.

“ You ready to come and join me, Walters?,” you ask her and she comes right away.

For the rest of the night til both of you had to sleep( work of course) you dance along to all of Megan Thee Stallions' music, enjoying the company of each other, and are just happy to be there with Jennifer Walter, your favorite person, and the best girlfriend.

*I am a music prof (predominantly classical vocalist), and I LOVE listening to Cillian’s music choices! That being said, sometimes I won’t like a song simply because of a vocalist (it’s a professional hazard - sorry!) 👩‍🏫

** The following are my own observations/opinions. We may not agree, and that’s ok! That’s what makes music fun! 😊

*** I wouldn’t say I’m well-versed in Cillian’s music preferences, but I do enjoy them (for the most part). I always wind up adding to my own playlists after listening to Cillian’s recommendations.

🎵Set 1 (Wandering Star - Undenied)

Wandering Star: such an interesting mix of “folksy” with urban sound effects

fun fact, I always accidentally mispronounce “Portishead”. Idk why I can’t learn, but there ya go!

Undenied: again, this is has a blend of soft and harsh sounds, but I like how it’s completely different from the first song. The timbres/qualities are different, so it’s a fun experiment in how far you can go with a musical idea.

Fame: what a classic 😎 now even if I’m not the biggest fan of Bowie’s voice, even I listen to this a good deal because it’s just perfect.

Perfect Day: why does the tonality of this song refuse to be stably in a major key? 🤔 I don’t necessarily consider that a “perfect day” association - the way it keeps mixing major/minor refutes the “perfect” quality. I suppose it’s just a “wistful” thing, but still!

I Want You: YES I LOVE EARLY DYLAN!!! This is prob in my top 5 fave Dylan tracks. It’s so heartbreakingly beautiful, simple, and earnest.

Fun fact: “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright” is my #1 Dylan song

Coffee & TV: I’ve said this before, but I find it odd that certain songs are produced in such a way that the vocals are subservient to the instrumental line. I think I hear this more in “alternative” sounding music. Maybe that’s a trend I’ve just never noticed!

Saat Alfarah: again, saxophones! Of course he loves this, and frankly, so do I! Idk what’s going on, but it’s got good vibes and it’s just fun! 😎

Midnight (ft. Raphael Saadiq): not my favorite, but it’s cool sounding, for sure. Also, when wearing my AirPods, the background pop sound almost seems like I can feel it reverberating through my skull. That’s weird.

A Cold Freezin’ Night: I can appreciate this as a quirky twist on “electronic sounds as music” + experimental music, and I even appreciate the interplay between siblings (as an older sister with a healthy rivalry with her brother 😂), BUT. not my favorite.

I’m glad he explained about the siblings beforehand, otherwise I would’ve been MAJORLY confused and concerned. 😅

Saturday mornings used to be Rooster’s favorite time of the week. He can sleep in just a little and wake up to the warm California sun instead of his blaring alarm for once, and a lot of the time, he wakes up to you curled up half on top of him, his legs tangled up in yours.

But this is not any ordinary Saturday morning.

You and Rooster had your first big fight, and it was a big one, and despite the promise to work it out the next day, he can’t help the twist in his gut when he wakes up alone. Your side of the bed cold by the time he comes to.

He tries not to stumble down the stairs, when he hears a distant, “Morning,” from the kitchen. You’re still clad in your pajamas, barefoot and holding his bright yellow mug that you claimed as yours, with a tea bag tag hanging off of the side.

Oh, thank God you’re still here. “Hey, morning.” He pads over, kissing you on the top of your head, before making his way towards the fancy coffee maker you bought him for Christmas.

“Rough night?” you eye him from behind the rim of your cup.

He chuckles a little. “Yeah, you can say that.”

You caress the small of his back as you walk past him, taking your usual seat at the dining table. And like clockwork, he follows shortly and takes his place next to you. For a moment, it almost feels like any ordinary Saturday morning—sipping tea and coffee, cutting up fruit and buttering up toast.

Almost.

He catches you smiling to yourself a little bit. “What?”

“Nothing, it’s just…” you shake your head, “It’s stupid. I think at one point last night, I somehow had the urge to turn to you like, ‘I can’t believe we’re having a fight right now!’ like a, uh… out-of-body experience. It’s weird.”

“No, I get what you mean,” he nods in agreement. “Didn’t like it very much, though. I much prefer having you on my side during fights.”

“Yeah, you know I’m not afraid to throw hands.” Your small smile turns into a full-blown giggle now. And Rooster thinks, maybe things will be okay again. “Sorry. Is it too early to talk about this? We can hold it off until we finish our breakfast, at least.”

He doesn’t like this, either. The niceties and formalities. As if you’re strangers. As if you haven’t been through hell and back in the brief three months of your relationship, and the year before that. He wants things to go back like it used to again.

“No, no. We can talk about it now.” He straightens up in his chair, turning slightly towards you.

“So I think…” you start, pausing to craft your next words thoughtfully, “I think, we need to set some ground rules.”

“Oh? Like what?”

“No slamming doors or being pissy and then passive-aggressively say you’re fine.” Well, that was locked and loaded and ready to go. “And this goes for both of us. We don’t have to tell each other everything, just… say that you had a bad day. A little heads up.”

“Yeah, that’s fair.” He blows on his coffee pensively. “It’s just that— I mean, it’s nice to have you cheer me up, but… um, sometimes I feel like I need to be left to my own devices? Just to cool off.”

“Okay. Then maybe, I’ll ask if you want company or some space? Would that work?”

God, he’s so in love with you. Kind, caring, patient you. “Perfect.”

You squeeze his knees reassuringly. “Got anything for me?”

He almost doesn’t want to think about it. He dreads thinking about the hurt he felt last night —he’d much rather just move on and let bygones be bygones. But then the unease nags at him, remnants from last night, and maybe it’s worth rethinking, if it means untangling this stubborn knot.

“Um… Maybe don’t raise your voice at me?” he grimaces. “I know that’s kind of the norm at my workplace—you gotta meet a certain threshold of decibels to be heard there, I guess— but I don’t think that’s necessary at home, do you?”

You nod. “I’m sorry about that.”

He brushes it off immediately. “We didn’t know. Fuck, I don’t think I knew it’d affect me that much.”

“Mm, and knowing how it affects you affects me, too.”

The house is silent again, but this time, it’s a little more… welcome. He’s not as hesitant to scoot his chair closer, and you make no move to avoid him. It’s not quite the same, and he suspects it may never be, but it’s not as bad as he thought.

“And I guess, above all, we’re on the same side here,” you sigh. He rests his hand on top of yours, filling the spaces between your fingers, and you let him. “It’s not a struggle between you and me, but you and me against… whatever shit we’re dealing with.”

He stares softly at your hand in his, and feels his heart grow three sizes when you tighten your grasp. “Been fending for myself for so long, I can’t remember what it feels like to have someone else in my corner.” And then looking up at you, he feels his eyes tearing up again —although for better reasons this time. “But I’m glad that someone is you.”

“Likewise.” The words barely audible —a little louder and it’ll come out as ugly sobs.

So much is said in the quiet of that particular Saturday night. I love you, I’m sorry, I want to make this work, I will to make it work… and yet, nothing else is spoken. You simply return to your coffee cups and breakfast plates and plans for the weekend. A silent promise to be there with each other, for each other, come what may.

And that is more than enough.

1. Do you listen to music when you write?

For writing fanfiction, I don’t really listen to music unless it’s a song that inspired that fic. Then I listen to it in repeat😂😂 When I’m writing my own stuff I tend to listen to a few playlists on YouTube that are like “epic music for writing” or other various playlists that don’t have music with words. I’ve got a few I cycle through depending on the type of scene I’m writing.

3. Computer or pen and paper?

For fanfiction, the notes app of my phone because I can just do it whenever. When I’m writing my own stuff I use my laptop because its easier for me to think bigger if that makes sense😂😂

17. What writing habits or rituals do you have?

Hmmm I think the only habit/ritual I really have is that every other time I sit down to write I read through and tweak the last thing I wrote. I know that TECHNICALLY you’re not supposed to edit as you go but it just makes it so much tidier in my brain.

18. If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be, and what would you write about?

Honestly if I could collaborate with anyone it would be my older sister. The biggest fan of our original writing is our younger sister and my older sister and I want to write her a story that has two of our characters interacting together (her two favorites). The problem is we can’t find time to plan it since my little sister is always in the house😂😂

21. Who is/are your favourite character(s) to write?

Oooooo this one is actually tricky😂😂 I think for fanfiction I more enjoy playing around and pushing preexisting dynamics so I don’t think there’s a specific character right now. For my personal writing… oh boy my babies. So far I think it’s Quinn, the snarky and jovial sci-fi pilot/smuggler who’s moral compass points firmly towards money… until children are involved. He also has a British accent. Yes, it is important to his character. He’s one of those characters who feels things very deeply but tries to put on a facade about it. Absolutely delightful to write he’s here for a good time, not for a long time (much to the chagrin of his first officer and close friend whose self appointed job is keeping Quinn alive).

27. Favourite line/scene

Favorite scene I’ve written (this is cheating) is probably my fic Little Talks. It’s a Les Mis Jacert lives and is redeemed fic and it’s got so many good scenes in it that came out even better than I thought they would that I can’t pick one.

36. Last sentence you wrote

Last line I wrote was from a WIP for Star Trek TNG. It’s a fic where Riker gets deaged by Q and it’s discovered that his father was abusive to him. Because that ep with his father… super dubious parenting and I think someone should address it so what’s fics for besides forcing people to address things? Also of those lowkey vent fics tbh😂

“What you deserved,” Picard said lowly, “was nothing but love from your father, and it pains me to hear that you believe you deserved such abuse from him.”

40. Share some backstory for one of your characters

I’ll give you the backstory for one of my side characters in one of my fantasy stories. His placeholder name is Romeo and he was like the equivalent of a medieval fantasy playboy. A true bard. He broke the heart of a sorceress and she cursed him to be nothing but a skeleton until he learned how to love selflessly. He is AWFUL and I love him. He’s just sour and feral all the time and regularly eggs people on the make bad decisions. Which is objectively hilarious coming from a skeleton.

Before I start writing, I like to have done enough world building that I understand the general vibes and structure of the world. This looks different for every story tho tbh. One story I’ve been meticulously building for four years and another I made up as I went along. I guess it’s more accurate for me to say then that I do enough that I can understand the characters’ relationships with the world. I’m very much a “people” writer and focus on the characters more than anything else (like, unfortunately, the plot😭)

46. Do you reread your own stories?

Look at risk of sounding arrogant there are very few of my stories that I do not enjoy rereading, and it’s mostly just the ones I wrote when I was like 15. I am the target audience for all of my stories and I will unashamedly admit that I regularly go to my own AO3 page and read my own fics and go “that was a good one good job me”

Your hand is getting cold.

You let your eyes wander down briefly, stopping when you spy the cause. There's punch spilling over the edge of your cup, trickling down your hand and leaving a sticky red stain behind.

Your mind's been on the run all night—or at least after the last four drinks—always looking for something simple to focus on but never staying long.

The sweaty condensation dripping down the windows. The thumping base traveling from the dance floor. And now the way the punch shines like blood against your skin in the spooky lights Steve spent the afternoon hanging.

"Hey, hey, hey."

A big hand covers your own, reaching for the cup, and you pull it back on instinct, trying to place the pretty brown eyes.

Steve. Of course. Speak of the devil.

He looks handsome, and very Harrison Ford-esque in the vest you found together at the costume shop. The costume fits him better than the Leia dress does you. In all the billowing white fabric, you look like a ghost every time you catch your own reflection.

So maybe that fits you fine. You hardly feel like you're here at all.

There's a crease between Steve's brows, and he reaches for the cup in your other hand. You pull back on instinct, sloshing punch in the other direction. It lands with a loud splat on the floor.

"I think you've had enough," he says softly.

Steve purses his lips, and you know he's holding back a whole slew of unhelpful phrases. You've heard them all—I know it's hard, but you have to try and enjoy yourself. Eddie wouldn't want you to be sad. He wouldn't want you to spend his favorite holiday crying into a pillow or blacked out on my couch. He'd want you to move on.

But Eddie's been dead for six months. So who gives a fuck what he would want.

You pull the cup to your lips, drink and drink and drink, letting the sweet sting burn any chance of tears from your eyes.

Steve only put this party together for your benefit. It was a nice gesture—going through the list of couple's costumes you and Eddie made together before, mashing the playlist of songs Eddie loved with ones people would actually want to dance to.

But you wish he hadn't. You wish he had let you wallow.

The empty cup crushes against Steve's waiting hand. You sway a little closer so he can hear you over the music.

"I'm gonna go dance."

There's a splash of guitar from the speakers, and you know it's one of your songs from the confused looks of everybody on the dance floor. Whatever. They get over it, swept up in the beat.

You let it take you, too, swinging around wildly, flailing with no concern how you look or who's watching. There was nobody around you wanted to impress anymore.

Eddie wouldn't care what you looked like anyway. He was a shit dancer.

Fuck.

The room is spinning. You're trying to keep with the beat, but there's the same lyrics, echoing over and over and over in your head.

dead man dead man dead man deadmandeadmandeadman. dead.

You're going to fucking puke.

Fighting through the crowd is like wading through a pool of bricks, which would still fucking suck if you were sober, and you are not. Catching on thrown back hands and angel wings, you stumble into the bathroom, just bending over in time to avoid vomiting a red stain down the front of your dress.

Your head has it's own heartbeat, pounding behind your eyes. You dip your cheek down to meet the cool porcelain.

There's no avoiding it. Hot tears spill over your face, plopping like raindrops into the basin. Fucking rock bottom, crying over your dead boyfriend on filthy toilet seat.

There's the sound of the door shutting and latching, just audible over your sobs. You lift your head, so dizzy and sad and hopeless it makes you angry.

"God," you're yelling, loud enough for it to echo off the tiles, "can't you see there's somebody fucking—"

He looks just like you remember him. And not in a good way.

The room already smells like sulfur, the way everything did down there—like sulfur and mold and fucking death. Eddie brought it with him. He brought it all. The holes in his hellfire shirt, scars peaking out of his collar, the mud and shit and blood staining his clothes.

He's got dark blue bags under his eyes, like bruises, cheeks sallow. Looking almost as tired as you feel. But he smiles, just the way he used to.

"Wow, sweetheart," —Eddie's voice is deep and gravelly as he kicks a boot up against the door, nodding back in the direction of the party— "this all for me?"

"Eddie."

That comes out as a sob, too.

He crosses the room in a few strides, a big hand at soft at your back, petting strands of hair off your sweaty forehead.

"Hey princess," he tries to smile, "long time no see."

Jesus. Your head's still spinning. You might puke again. It doesn't help that Eddie keeps going in and out of focus, like maybe you're dreaming this all up, the way his skin feels and the smell of him and the cute little curls in front of his ears.

"You were dead."

He huffs at you. "I think, technically, sweetheart, I still am."

He pulls one of your hands toward his chest, and there's nothing beneath it. No heartbeat. Just Eddie.

He doesn't expect it, the way you launch yourself at him, pulling him to floor. Eddie laughs, wraps his arms around you, his shaking lungs and the feel of his hands full of disbelief.

"I missed you."

You can tell he's missed you, too. He nods into your neck, hot breath on your skin.

"Why didn't you come back before?"

"Halloween seemed like a good time," he whispers, looking you in the eye, "wouldn't want to scare the neighbors."

His lips press tighter together. There's something he's not telling you. If you weren't so fucking high, you'd try to figure it out.

But you are fucking high—high out of your mind—and there's only one thing you want to do right now.

Eddie doesn't taste like death. He tastes like he used to, in the back of his van, in his bed or on the couch, his hands on you and his wandering lips, just bodies and kisses and nothing in between.

"Fuck, baby," he grunts, nipping at your ear, "you gotta be careful with me."

You shake your head. There's enough blood in him for the skin at his neck to turn a shade darker when you bite at it.

Eddie's hips shift against yours. He's breathing harder, although you're not sure where it goes, or what his lungs do with it once it's there.

"Can I- can I taste you, baby?"

"Mhmm."

It feels so good to be caught up in his arms again, you don't even notice the sting when his lips seal around your neck, the way his throat pulses with swallow after swallow. The groan he lets out is pained when he finally rips himself off of you.

Eddie cups your cheeks in both hands, thumbs petting at the left-over tears.

"Awww, baby. I don't think I should have done that."

You hardly hear him. Everything is fuzzy. You let your eyes fall closed, and the soft brush at your hairline could be his lips, or something you made up.

And then he's gone.

Steve's beside you when you lift your head again.

"Jesus, what the fuck happened to you? Robin found you on the floor and thought you were dead."

He's wiping at your neck with a cloth, or paper towel or something, and it hurts.

What did happen to you?

"I- I think I fell."

Steve hums, disapproving, cleaning the dripping blood from your neck, smoothing a bandage over the skin.

When you pull it off the next morning, all that's left of Eddie—or your vision of him—are two perfect little puncture wounds, and a few bruises in the shape of teeth.

Adding to your Hotch x black/biracial reader list (which I'm happy to see btw, that just made me love your stories even more 🥰): Hotch likes the neosoul RnB, i.e., Lauryn Hill, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, etc. You had to explain to him that there's levels to black music within the genres, but he loves learning about them. He's learned that whatever playlist you've got going is (usually) based on your mood, some days you just shuffle your library and vibe. He also learned that when you play SZA, Summer Walker, or Jhene Aiko, he's (probably) done something wrong. I think his favorite songs that make him think of you would be Nothing Even Matters by Lauryn Hill and D'Angelo, and Lady by D'Angelo.

And as soon as Aaron hears that Sunday cleaning playlist? An absolute SUCKER 😩 he’s up first thing in the morning with you to clean every Sunday because he knows that’s your time, and he won’t be able to sleep for the vacuum/music anyway 🥰

He loves that you have a routine and he loves being a part of it, especially when he hears a song that you like a lot, and he’ll catch you singing along while you sweep or do the dishes so he makes sure he adds it to his playlist to surprise you the next time you’re in the car 😩🥰🥰

And when you’re mad at him? He knows as soon as he hears SZA coming from the room you two share that he’s done something wrong or that you’ve had a bad day and you just need to mellow out before bed

okay uuuhhhhhh currently Mötley Crüe and KISS are tied for the title of favourite band soooo. idk what to talk about honestly. all of the kiss band members make my heart happy, Eric Carr aka The Fox and Eric Singer as The Catman are the most adorable imho, and I loved finding out more of the band lore from that special edition magazine I bought recently! Their music makes me happy and I love hearing everyone's different styles depending on who worked most on which song, who sang it, etc.!!! And I adore all the band's different style phases! The darker more brutal metal sound, the poppy disco-y glam sound, the softer ballad style songs! 🥰

and for mötley crüe? MICK MARS IS MY FAVOURITE OLD MAN MY SWEET BABYGIRL MY DARLING! he's weird and strange but also cool and beautiful and I wanna steal his gender so bad. I wanna be like him when I grow up. Fun fact: what really drew me into the fandom side of things was a post praising Nikki's thighs, how he himself was self conscious over them and wanted skinny legs like his terror twin tommy but how the op of the post and many others(!) adore them! really helped my own body image issues regarding my thicc thighs :') also that one post praising Mick for sticking with the other 3 idiots (affectionate) for 40+ years, keeping the band alive even with his health issues and near death experience and I think that's when I first fell for my fav old man.

this one goes for both bands: so far I have not listened to their entire discographies but I'm so excited to discover all there is to their repertoires!!! ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥

idk if it'd count as damaging my social skills (my childhood trauma has done a great job on that all on its own lol) but I was OBSESSED with Gwen Stefani's Love.Angel.Music.Baby album when I was 8 and it probably didn't help that none of my classmates (who already didn't like me for being a weirdo) were into her music lol

and though I've since learned of the problematic messages and Gwen's naive and ignorant justifications behind this album and its themes, it has still shaped younger me quite a lot 😅

the line "'Cause it's Super Kawaii, that means: Super Cute in Japanese" will forever be burned into my brain

The New York Beat: New York's Hottest Club Hits by David Phillips 1987 Freestyle / Dance-Pop

God, it must've been such a fuckin' vibe to pop something like this into your tape deck back in 1987 on a late, balmy New York City night and just cruise down the streets blasting it with your windows rolled all the way down 😎. When done right, freestyle music can be *so* good, man. You load a piece of a vocal into a sampler, chop up a Latin-tinged, pitch-shifted melody out of it, and then lay that melody over some layers of synths and drums and then I'm all yours 🥰.

And you happen to briefly get a couple of those sublime moments in the instrumental portions of the final track on this mix, "I Won't Stop Loving You," by C-Bank featuring Diamond Eyes. C-Bank is an electro and freestyle project that has actually belonged to a handful of producers over the years. In fact, the other C-Bank track that's on this mix appears to have been produced by a guy named John Robie, who had previously crafted some classic old school electro-hip hop jams for Afrika Bambaataa & The Soulsonic Force—namely, "Looking for the Perfect Beat" and "Renegades of Funk"—and he also plays synthesizer on the group's most famous hit, "Planet Rock." But Robie's C-Bank song, I think, pales in comparison to the other one on here, which appears to have been co-produced by a pair of rookies named Elvin Molina and Mickey Garcia, who'd both go on to make a lot more freestyle tracks after they released this one. And the version that's on this tape actually sounds a bit different than the version that's on YouTube, which I'll provide here.

Because of those instrumental bits with the melodic vocal stabs, that C-Bank track is my favorite tune on here. But the one that precedes it by Bronx trio Sweet Sensation is a pretty quintessential 80s dance tune too; it was their debut single and it hit #64 on Billboard's Hot 100.

But outside of those two tracks, nothing else on this mix really seems all that special. And some of these tunes were actually pretty big hits in their day, like Sicilian singer Nocera's "Summertime, Summertime," which hit #2 on the Billboard dance chart in 1986. But looking back, a lot of these tunes actually just sound kinda simple, formulaic, and cheap 🤷‍♂️.

However, despite the overall lackluster selection, the mixing on this tape is still pretty damn good. And according to Discogs, this appears to be the only mix that this David Phillips guy ever made. Prior to this mix—if it is indeed the same guy—he did an updated 1986 dance remix of pre-Monkees Micky Dolenz's 1967 blues-rock single, "Don't Do It," which he front-ended with a coked-out, uptempo, hypnotically surfy hi-NRG beat. And I gotta say, it's really... something 😅; worth a listen just for the sheer novelty of it.

Really was not expecting this dancy freestyle mix to have just one degree of separation from Micky Dolenz, but there you have it! 😄

Now, I don’t have any links to this full mix, but I managed to record it with one of those cheap cassette-to-mp3 converters, so if you *really* want to hear it, feel free to get at me.

And here’s a short Spotify playlist of some personal freestyle faves of mine; nothing out of the ordinary, but some absolute bangers that span from the early 80s to mid-90s 😌.

1. Zach Bryan- Sweet DeAnn. Every single time I really listen to those lyrics, I sob ugly. It’s basically a message to his late mom. ♥️

2. Tyler Childers- Shake the Frost- that beginning. The music The lyrics you can just feel the love. 🥰 it’s perfect.

3. Jason Isbell- White Man’s World- it’s a good song not my favorite by him but the lyrics. The way they address race & privilege just acknowledging the existence of it and ending on that hopeful “fire in my baby girl’s eyes”. It’s beautiful. And the line referencing Amanda Shires:

“Momma wants to change that Nashville sound

But they’re never gonna let her” 😢

4. Shane Smith & the Saints- The Mountain. I absolutely love this song. The imagery of the lyrics but that beginning. Just their voices. The harmonies. So good. Then the violin quickly followed by the drums kick in and the song is off running. I love it. ♥️

7. three songs you didn’t expect to like but eventually loved

I answered this one in a previous post. I had a hard enough time thinking of these three, or else I'd come up with three more for you! 😂

19. three songs that are your guilty pleasure

The funny thing about this one is that I'm pretty open about my weirdness, so I don't know if there are any songs I would actually feel guilty about listening to. But here are a couple that I think fit the bill.

I know Paris Hilton is a big deal DJ now, but back in the day, she tried to be a pop star. She succeeded in being a one hit wonder. And this song slaps. I still listen to it on the regular.

The fact that I even know an O-Town deep cut is proof positive that this one deserves a shout out. This song is so good because of how truly corny it is. It’s a “love” song that is basically spoken in all cheesy pickup lines, and it’s hilarious. This definitely comes off more as a parody boy band song, but it is, in fact, a band that was supposed to be taken seriously.

This song in 1999? A jam.

This song in 2022? A problem.

I’m not going to dig into it here, just take a look at the lyrics. The message of the song is not great, like at all, but I still dance in my seat whenever it comes on.

22. three songs you listen to when you’re sad

Anything No Doubt is always my go-to when I’m feeling down. They’re my favorite band, so listening to them just makes me happy. This song in particular is one that I listen to when I’m feeling sad, and want to remind myself that I’m a bad bitch and I can handle whatever is making me sad.

Not technically No Doubt, so I’m counting it. This is my go to song when I’m sad and instead of pumping myself up, I want to cry it out.

When I’m sad, I need comfort. Disney is my number one comfort, and of course Ariel is my number one princess. I have a whole Disney playlist that I go to when I’m sad. This song, while one of my favorites, also serves as a representative for all of those comfort songs from my childhood.

23. three songs that never fail to get you pumped up

I answered this one here, but I’ll pick three more for you!

This is a newer pick. I’ve never been much of a fan of it, to be honest. It was just that song I had to listen to for a few seconds before The Hills started. Then, a radio show I listen to created a playlist that they called “go girl rock”, which is basically exactly what it sounds like, and this song was on that. I listened to the playlist, because there were some great songs on it. Then this song came on, and I listened to is from beginning to end, and I’ll be damned if I didn’t legitimately feel hyped and ready to take on the world by the end of it.

I sometimes refer to Fall Out Boy as my college boyfriends. They were the band I listened to the most during that time in my life. I’ve also seen them more times than I can even remember (and met them two or three times too), and they ALWAYS end the show with Saturday. The song is hype, and the album version alone could get me pumped, but the fact that this song will always bring me back to those amazing live moments is what pumps me up the most about it. I hear this song, and I feel like I’m ready to mosh (notice I said feel like, I’m far to dainty of a flower to actually mosh at a concert).

This song is a whole ass party. It’s upbeat, it’s fun, and the lyrics embody the ‘I don’t give a fuck what you think’ attitude I try (emphasis on try) to live by.

16. put a little love on me im so sorry for putting u at the bottom miss pallom! i usually love a piano ballad n i do think this is a nice song but it just doesn’t hit for me the way the rest of the album does </3 i do love the lyrics though you can tell how much of his heart niall put into this one!

15. nice to meet ya i promise all the singles aren’t at the bottom... ntmy bangs it does & i loved it a lot as our first look into the album! the mv is fun too i loved the lil hints it dropped for hbw. for me it simply does not go as hard as the others </3

14. san francisco love the imagery of a soaking wet niall showing up at your doorstep. also i think this song works so well as a second-to-last song, especially following the storyline of the album. n it has nice vibes!!! just not the fave
