Katara is trying to figure out if Azula…you know. So she does the most reasonable thing: ask Zuko things without looking like she’s asking exactly that. The thing is Zuko is Zuko.

Katara: Hey good to see you! Zuko: Good to see you too.  Katara: Do you want to have a cup of tea so we can catch up? Zuko: Sure, I was waiting for Azula but I think she’s going to be late. Katara: Azula late? Zuko: She’s in a meeting with some military men who don't know when to shut up. Katara: Is it a bad thing for her? Zuko: Not really, she loves to make men cry.

Katara: So she likes sensitive men? Zuko: She laughs at me whenever I cry watching a play and looks disgusted when I talk about feelings so I don’t think so. Katara: So tough men? Zuko: What for? Katara: She likes them? Zuko: I also don’t think so. Every time some dude brag about how strong he is Azula dares him to do something and wins. She looks so happy embarrassing them. Katara: So no sensitive guys or tough guys. Smart ones? Zuko: She does value learning new stuff about everything because she’s a nerd, but she doesn’t seem particularly interested in being taught by any men. Katara: No sensitive, no tough, no smart…What type of men does she like? Zuko: Depends on what she is going to do I suppose. Katara: What?! Zuko: I mean for a mission she usually prefer diversity depending on where- Katara: To date Zuko. What type of men does she like to date? Zuko: To date? Azula? Katara: Yes Azula. Zuko: Men? Katara:  Zuko: My sister? Katara: Are you implying something or you are lost because I can’t tell the difference right now. Zuko: I’m a little bit lost on why you want to pair Azula with some dude. Katara: Zuko. Zuko: She won’t like that. Katara: Why? Zuko: Why she won’t…Oh c’mon you know Azula. Katara: I DON'T. This is why I’m asking. Zuko: Don’t tell me Aang or Sokka are interested in her. Katara: I want to throw up. Zuko: Hey, she's my sister. Be careful.  Katara: Kyoshi’s tits Zuko. Zuko: But no, they wouldn’t have a chance. So don’t worry. Katara: WHY?! Zuko: Oh you want them to have one? Katara: For Tui's sake.  Zuko: It’s that a yes? Katara: OF COURSE NO. Zuko: So why- Katara: DO YOU SISTER LIKE GIRLS OR NOT?! Zuko: Oh, is that it?  Katara: Can you answer?! Zuko: Of course, she only likes girls. I think you knew that. Katara: When- You know it doesn't matter. Thank you so much you make me the happiest waterbender on earth. Zuko: For telling you that Azula likes girls? You’re so weird sometimes. Katara: You are really sweet. Never change. Bye! Zuko: Zuko: So no cup of tea… … Azula: I almost killed three of them. It was fun. Zuko: You are almost as weird as Katara you know…oh. Azula: I know what? Zuko: What type of girls do you like?

I saw a thread on twitter (X?) talking about the relation between Zuko's scar and Mai and while it was really interesting to read it, I have some thoughts about it

First and foremost, yeh, the scar OBVIOUSLY holds some symbolism in the storytelling but for me, does not hold the way op talks about.

In the "crossroads of destiny" ep, we see that Katara acknowledges his pain regarding his scar and reaches out to him through it. It was because of that interaction that he begins to really change and see what was wrong and what was right (even tho he doesnt do what's right)

She touches his face so gently....

I really believe that his scar can also symbolize his empathy and desire to do the right thing, because that was the reason he got it in the first place, he spoke up because of an injustice.

Zuko's Scars

I find it interesting that Zuko gets 2 major scars throughout the show and both largely for the same reason. To me it shows the simplistic urge to protect that Ozai never quite managed to a stamp out of Zuko. I know we as a fandom like to talk about all the change and growth Zuko went through but the thing I feel we don't talk about nearly enough is the things that he kept. He kept his ridiculous determination, his protectiveness and most of all his dumb assery of kindness.

Throughout the show Zuko is never one to hesitate or think through his actions. We see this with his impulsiveness in challenging people to Agni Kais, disregard of Uncle's advice and you know LITERALLY SWIMMING UNDERNEATH THE NORTH POLE?! I mean seriously Zuko.

But this isn't just for his own benefit, he's never hesitated for others either, Zhao, Pikesman, Lee.

Its quite the interesting point that the first and last of Zuko's scars are both from the same reason: an unhesitating act to protect. His first one is where he yells at a general in the war council and he gets half his face burned off for it. He didn't hesitate. Didn't think about himself or what could happen to him, his only thought at that moment was to stand up for someone who can't.

Then. After getting half his face burned off to teach him a lesson. He doesn't learn it. He keeps that part of him, even when everything else outside and inside of him is changing. No, 3 years later, one of Zuko's final acts in the show. The one that essentially makes him firelord is a stupid unthinking act to save someone who can't save themselves. He's changed so much and yet keeps that. The beginning or an arc and the end of an arc, marked by a scar from a family member.

What the fuck do yous imagine? Like, do you just imagine them as just cartoons/drawings, or do you like... get an actor or actual person who represents them or has similar personality or physical features as them when you read.

It's literally 1 in the morning, and I have been in my bed thinking about this question, and idk why.

An ATLA book 3: Fire, episode one scene analysis !!

I cant lie the scene where Ozai welcomes Zuko home makes me sob just a teeny tiny bit because you can literally see in his face that returning doesn’t feel like it should, and as someone with a complicated relationship with their parents i feel that

(Zuko matters so much to me like i cant put it into words he is one of the most special characters in existence)

Also something i noticed straight away during my rewatch is that Ozai can never mention any kind of accomplishment of Zuko’s without bringing Azula into it,, like even when Zuko is home for the first time in three years he cannot say he is proud of him without adding “because you and your sister conquered ba sing se” and he also bases all of his praise of zuko around harming others and not a single bit of it commends his personal growth or literally anything observant at all because if he actually looked at Zuko for five seconds he would see something so far from what he preaches and i genuinely think Ozai does not possess the emotional maturity to see what is right in front of him.

Additionally, the symbolism in these scenes actually astounds me like in this short sequence theres so much to pick up on!?!?

Something small but very important is the symbolism behind this scene of Zuko kneeling before his father while Ozai officially welcomes him home.

Its such a simple scene but we can link it to so much, but mainly the scene of him kneeling before his father during the agni kai.

This also links to the fact that he still defers to his father despite everything and through that we can see that while he is so emotionally mature he isnt ready yet to fully sever ties with his father, and by extension his guilt and feelings of inadequacy because for as long as he can remember that was his whole identity and when he was faced with the big choice by Iroh i think he most definitely knew what was right, however the permanence and finality of it scared him into following Azula and his father because thats what hes always known, its FAMILIAR.

Another piece of symbolism i adored in this episode was the framing of this shot where the fire nation banner looms over Zuko, and how it represents his father and the expectations placed on him, and how he feels they are too big and overbearing.

I also noticed that when he steps forward the banner/ entrance to his fathers throne room casts a shadow on his face, which i think could be interpreted as representing how Ozai and Azula cloud his morals because he is so desperate for their approval and love.

This whole shadow archetype is also seen in how Ozai is always shown as being obscured by shadows right up until this episode and i think that was so incredibly well done.
