Hey, what's something that will definitely make you turn pages while reading a fantasy book? What makes the world, plot or characters intriguing for you?

For me it's the mood of the book. The world can't be to "cold" and "sterile" or "deserted" like in dystopias and westerns. I also can't stand worlds that feel like delirious dreams. But I love when the story has some mystery, a promise, a spark of magic from the very beginning. I love when the world feels familiar but not entirely, like there's still something to discover. And I like it to be cosy but there's also a chance for some horror. I like cities covered in snow, little rainy villages, misty forests, windy hills.

When it's about the plot, I love magical adventures, not travels from place A to place B (those I find extremely boring no matter what happens during all the travelling) but unveiling mysteries and navigating through complicated intrigues.

As for characters, give me unassuming ones, introverts, silent types, those who have their secrets, those who have magic inside them, soft but stoic ones. Artists, professors, scientists, book lovers, sorcerers and rulers.

Why have bkg die?

I think it's pretty clear from the way that whole thing was framed that the purpose of Katsuki dying was symbolic. This is a staple of Japanese drama running all the way back to kabuki. It is a trope for a main character to die to shed their mortal incarnation and come back to life as their deified form. Katsuki's death runs perfectly parallel to Tomura's from the PLW arc right down to the part where they are both responsible for their own resurrections. It's probably one of the best cases I can think of where a character's death actually did further that same character's arc without fridging them for the sake of someone else.

Why have [Katsuki] fight AFO?

Because AFO was set up as a "what if" scenario or cautionary tale for Katsuki, the other side to his "villains and heroes are two sides of the same coin" storyline. AFO in his physical form has a different character arc and story utility from AFO the quirk vestige. He provided a lot of backstory that allows us to infer the subtlety of how Katsuki is likely some sort of reincarnation of Kudou, the mechanics of which we will never need to revisit because they're unimportant. It was about karma and personal growth. It was about showcasing how Katsuki is an heir to many legacies, All Might's included.

Why have Izuku lose his arms?

Again, it's symbolic. It's been foreshadowed pretty heavily that Izuku would risk losing his arms in reaching out to save someone. This was a demonstration of his willingness to take on that risk. It also provides a moment for Eri to get in on the "everyone contributes a little bit to the fight" action all the other characters have been allowed to have. We don't even know yet what state Izuku will actually be in when this is all over, so it'd be premature to jump to any major conclusions about all of this. The story may still have a lot to say about this.

What purpose has any of it served???? At all???????

So, first off, this is not an attempt to kink shame (dubcon and noncon are great!) but I do keep seeing a thing in fics (I do NOT see this irl in kink spaces nearly as often) where like. A character will interrupt the flow of the scene to check consent

And I don't mean in an "are we still green?" Or "what's your color?" kind of way, but I mean. The author has tagged the fic and indicated via prose and/or author notes that they are doing their Due Diligence to make sure this fic is Righteously Consensual from top to bottom, No Question About It

And a character will ask for full sexual consent either directly or indirectly or renegotiate the boundaries of the kinks being practiced AFTER the sex acts have already begun.

Here's the thing: horny brain isn't great at making decisions! irl in kink spaces, there's often a lot of emphasis on negotiating BEFORE the scene begins, perhaps even with a space between negotiation and the scene if it's with a new/unfamiliar partner (maybe it's a few minutes while things are set up, maybe the partners negotiate a day or more in advance! It depends!), and not changing the parameters of the scene after someone is already horny or god forbid already in subspace.

Again, these are perfectly fine rules to break in fiction, when the author is aware of it (most characters are not going to be fully familiar with safe, sane, consensual practices and the traffic light system, nor would we want them to be!) but I'm increasingly finding fics where the author DOESN'T seem aware, which takes a normal fic (in-character, with reasonable but perhaps even somewhat dubious practices, which the author isn't emphasizing or preaching about) into Red Flag Territory (a character, OOC, yanking me out of the scene to behave like a PSA about consent instead of conforming to the horny tone of the scene, and perpetuating unsafe practices anyway)

If you are writing a master manipulator or someone who wants to have a gotcha, you totally said it was okay on a character they are trying to bone (which is well in the realm of non/dubcon) that's fine! This PSA is not aimed at you. But if you are trying to write someone who Cares Strongly About Consent, then perhaps be more aware of when is an appropriate time to escalate the situation (sexually speaking) or ask for consent!

Something else about the 1977 production that I just noticed right now rewatching the shaving scene is they have a shot of Jonathan going to bed the night before, and 1) they have try and sleep before stopping and putting on the crucifix, which I think is a great way to emphasize that he's comforted by it through the medium of film and 2) as he's going to sleep it's you know morning, so you can hear outside the bleating of sheep which is just 👌👌👌👌 delectable symbolism right there mmmmMm.

they are currently tear gassing my former classmates four blocks from my apartment. the encampment was there for literally like two hours and as soon as the sun set state troopers in riot gear moved in and started tear gassing and arresting people on the grounds of “unlawful assembly”, in a public park on a public campus of the university these students pay to attend, that I paid to attend not even a year ago. I’ve been getting university alert texts calling it a “violent protest” because a handful of students threw water bottles at these cops in their riot gear, and because they don’t need a real reason to arrest you, and because they can say whatever they want and do whatever they want and get away with it. they’ve been setting off the emergency sirens periodically, a thing I’ve only heard them do before in the event of an active tornado. there are ALWAYS christian fundamentalists on campus harassing students with megaphones, but we can’t doing anything about that. there’s breaking and entering and violent crime and sexual assault all the time but we can’t do anything about that. a kid died from hazing two years ago. multiple students have died from being hit by cars in the last few years but we don’t have traffic cops helping regulate things. but I’m just saying things we already know: the cops aren’t here for us. they’re here to uphold fascism. the university isn’t here for us. the government isn’t here for us. no one in my generation will be able to afford a house since there’s no money to excuse student debt or fix the economy, but somehow there’s money for more cops, more tear gas, and more weapons to fund israel’s genocide. i've been ruminating a lot on it because i think i'm bad at putting my thoughts into words but i need y'all to understand that while there are absolutely a lot of Not Good Things about the finals being held in saudi arabia for three years...the way people seem to treat is as morally black and white is shortsighted and unhelpful.

realistically the players traveling there will be protected. it may be uncomfortable, it's certainly not ideal, but they will travel there for a few weeks, play their tennis, then leave. there are a lot of women, a lot of queer people who actually live in saudi arabia who cannot just leave, who are actually subjected to laws and social climates...and to me it just seems very disrespectful to that actual lived experience, for everybody to sort of turn their noses up and get on their high horses. of course, if the players wish to opt out, that is their choice, but that is their choice to make. that's their judgement. not ours.

and then, what about a tournament like miami? florida is literally experiencing one of the worst active regressions that i've seen in the us (granted i'm young). things like critical race theory and lgbtq+ ed are being removed from curriculums, rights for trans youth, trans healthcare, etc. are going backwards. abortion rights? gun violence? and yes i know that the laws and climate in saudi arabia are different gravy, i understand that, but my point is, no one would ever DREAM of arguing against hosting a tournament in miami despite all of these issues. and we can extend this to a lot of other tournaments! i mean, all the outrage about fifa hosting a world cup in qatar, but we don't have any of these sentiments about doha? i've seen other people bring up that the finals were hosted in singapore when gay marriage was still illegal there. we've already talked about italy's fascist prime minister. and i could go on and on and on about the war crimes of countries like the us or the uk - is the us not participating actively in genocide right now? where is the standard? if you argue against hosting the finals in saudi arabia for the reason of human rights, to me it seems you have to uphold that standard for the location you do land on. and i can guarantee, you will not find a single country in the world with clean hands.

i want to be clear i am not arguing that hosting the finals in saudi arabia is a good thing, especially for three years, especially because it's definitely going there because of money, and not for any of the "good" reasons i think some people want us to believe about "improving the region" (which is very weirdly white savior-esque anyway). i don't really have an official "conclusion" to this discussion.

what i am arguing is that i think a lot of the protests against saudi arabiahosting the finals are more an example of implicit anti-arab bias and islamophobia, rather than genuine discussion. key word implicit: i don't think most people are purposefully trying to be anti-arab/islamophobic. or at least, i'd like to believe nobody is. but i also think, particularly in the west, there is already so much of this xenophobic sentiment ingrained. and this is why i think it's really really REALLY important to check ourselves when we talk about it instead of just jumping straight to the human rights conversation without a second thought.

i'll say it plainly: i don't think the finals should be held in saudi arabia. but for me, it has more to do with sportswashing, with the dangers of the way money is thrown around in sports, and because i think it's more evidence that the wta doesn't care about player welfare but rather about making a profit (what else is new). human rights are absolutely a concern of mine, but how is it fair to hold saudi arabia to a standard that we don't seem to care about for literally anybody else?

literally look at the us's ugly ugly history, past and present, and tell me why we deserve to host a tennis tournament.

#small business #washi tape #portal 2 #infinity train #the owl house #etsy #support small business #there were sticky notes! they dont stick very good. they kinda have a couple problems. im still talkin it thru with my manu as of queueing #the print is ok - the print is great actually! they just dont. stick. and that's one thing #but they leave just a liiiitttle bit of sticky residue on the Next notepad in the stack #and you can see it #and it sticks just a little bit on the front of that next note. like 1/10 sticky; MAYBE 2/10 if ur unlucky. #if you tend to washi-tape your notes up anyway it's probably fine but im not sure what i'll do with them yet #but i have Two Hundred of them so uhhhhh #i'm thinking i'll sell them at a big discount. because they're still pretty ok as memo pads! but i have to see what my manu decides to do #which is such a shame because they LOOK really really really cool!!!!!! they just dont Sticky good #but also i have people buy seconds all the time and say 'i dont even know whats wrong with this' so i wonder if #my standards are way too high and people really would be ok buying these for like 50% off or something #hrmmmm. send dms/replies/asks (anons on) if you have any opinions #im hearing from other shop owners that generally unless its officially post-it brand it doesnt stick very well #but custom print post its are very expensive OTL so i think for now i'll just make non-stick post its in the future #the washis are beautiful and perfect though. i love the washis. beautiful perfect flawless tapes. they even have stickers on the side!!

the problem is I’m such a staunch believer in the slow buildup, the earnest enjoyment of meandering through terrible story decisions and weird nothing subplots to build up into a conclusion that explodes out from all that as fantastic storytelling and intrigue based on all that buildup, such that it makes it necessary to get through all that or you’re missing something essential, that I’m also a terrible person to talk to about what makes a story good. I can tell you plenty of what actually makes something tight and well-written and all that technical speak but how could anyone take my advice when I so so so love excruciatingly long unnecessarily complex fumbling and weird nonsense that spirals into, inexplicably, weird nonsense that makes you cry your lungs sore
