It's October 22nd, 🐨 International Wombat Day! The traditions surrounding today's event have expanded from simply celebrating these cute little creatures to eating lots of chocolate and wine gums (known in some parts of the world as gummy bears or Swedish fish).

Wombats are furry, stocky, short-legged, herbivorous marsupials, native to open grasslands and eucalyptus forests in Australia and Tasmania. They like to keep to themselves, living solitary lives in underground burrows during the day and coming out at night to forage on grasses, roots, and bark.

Space for wombats is at a premium as farm and ranch lands increasingly encroach upon their natural habitats. The damage to crop fields and pastures caused by wombats' burrowing can be a big nuisance. They've been hunted as vermin for this reason, as well as for their fur and simply for sport. They're easy targets because, like their cousins, the koala, they’re very cumbersome and move very slowly. #Repost @savesunriseglossies @download.ins --- In the afternoon on the 20th of August at Glossy drinks our latest fledgling was being fed high up in the gum tree by his mum. Spencer was taking identification photographs & videos for his records. In the distance we started to hear the celebratory calls of another new fledgling leaving the safety of the nest for the first time. Spencer & I couldn’t believe what we were hearing. The calls got louder & louder when the new trio finally arrived. In that moment I felt such great joy & sadness. We were standing there witnessing the miracle of life. Gap wing had come home with his precious newly fledged daughter & mate. All of the Glossies gave out a welcoming call to the new arrival. We felt like part of the Flock as a proud dad & friend circled over our heads. I burst into tears as reality hit that this new family was soon to lose their Forest. What made me feel worse was that this was being done by God’s people to God’s creatures. How could believers like me allow this to happen. This goes against everything I have ever been taught by the Church. Just because you have legal approval doesn’t mean it is morally acceptable. What kind of Church doesn’t listen to the Community it serves. I feel nothing but disappear at this point in time. All we have left are our hopes & our prayers. Let’s hope God is listening. Detail of ‘Embrace’, 20”x22”, acrylic on maple panel 2017 for my latest show Spectrum at Joshua Liner Gallery in NYC (swipe to see full painting) I often think of salamanders as the ‘canary in the coal mine’ ~ indicator species provide a barometer for the health of our environment. I made this piece as 1/4 of my synchronized movement series, after witnessing a hopeful scene of Ensatina’s embracing each other in a mating ball aka Amplexus. Aesthetically inspired by minimalist Japanese Aquascaping, I experimented with shadow and highlights following the pattern in the grain of wood. Ensatina’s literally ‘crawling out of the woodwork’ down the steps in the grain to mate in a receding shallow pond of floating duckweed aqua plants. The decline in amphibian populations has been widely publicized yet these secretive salamanders deserve more attention and protection as they are intrinsically valuable and important to the health of our eco-system. It's October 1st, 🦝 International Raccoon Appreciation Day. This event was created to encourage us to learn more about raccoons and show our appreciation by protecting their habitats.

Raccoons are nocturnal animals, native to North America and northern South America. In the wild, raccoons have a life expectancy of about 2 to 3 years, but in captivity, they can live up to 20 years. These cute little mammals are omnivores like us who eat a variety of foods – fruits, nuts, berries, insects, rodents, frogs, crayfish, and eggs, while keeping an eye out for predators like cougars, bobcats, coyotes, foxes, and owls.

Despite their appeal, though, some people look upon raccoons as vermin. They can be pesky critters – turning over trash cans, tearing up gardens, stealing eggs from chicken coops, etc. They can also carry diseases like rabies and roundworm.

Most people love raccoons anyway, though – especially the unique way they use their paws to "wash" their food. They also use their little hands to open latches and remove lids from containers. They can rotate their rear paws 180 agrees, which allows them to climb down trees headfirst. Raccoons are incredibly smart, too. At one time, they were used instead of lab rats, but the strong-willed raccoons kept outsmarting the scientists. Because of their high intelligence and cuteness, some people keep raccoons as pets. 🦚❤Members of the local community rescued an injured and displaced peahen from hunters and together we rehabilitated her to good health under veterinary supervision. She was injured and displaced due to irresponsible deforestation and urbanization. 🌲 Together with the community we released her back into the wild at a forest island where we hope she will find her peers.
