It's October 22nd, 🐨 International Wombat Day! The traditions surrounding today's event have expanded from simply celebrating these cute little creatures to eating lots of chocolate and wine gums (known in some parts of the world as gummy bears or Swedish fish).
Wombats are furry, stocky, short-legged, herbivorous marsupials, native to open grasslands and eucalyptus forests in Australia and Tasmania. They like to keep to themselves, living solitary lives in underground burrows during the day and coming out at night to forage on grasses, roots, and bark.
Space for wombats is at a premium as farm and ranch lands increasingly encroach upon their natural habitats. The damage to crop fields and pastures caused by wombats' burrowing can be a big nuisance. They've been hunted as vermin for this reason, as well as for their fur and simply for sport. They're easy targets because, like their cousins, the koala, they’re very cumbersome and move very slowly. The Turtle Dove Every year hunting and habitat loss is dragging the European Turtle Dove closer to the very edge of existence. Two extremely rare white giraffes have been killed by poachers in north-eastern Kenya, conservationists say. Rangers had found the carcasses of the female and her calf in a village in north-eastern Kenya's Garissa County. A third white giraffe is still alive. It is thought to be the only remaining one in the world, the conservationists added. Their white appearance is due to a rare condition called leucism, which causes skin cells to have no pigmentation. Él era Arthur. Un oso pardo de 17 años que vivía en Rumania. Campesinos de la zona se quejaron sobre una hembra osa con oseznos que había causado daños. El ministro del medio ambiente rumano, por su parte, dio la autorización a Prinz Emanuel von und zu Liechtenstein (Príncipe Emanuel de Liechtenstein) para cazar a la hembra, y "resolver" el problema.
El cazador por su parte fue y le disparó a Arthur. Uno de los osos más grandes de la zona de los Cárpatos.
Los osos pardos están protegidos por la Unión Europea y la convención de Berna. Y tienen una gran amenaza por parte del ser humano quien ha destruido su hábitat. Cuando hay conflicto entre el ser humano y los animales, se han sugerido numerosas opciones como cercas eléctricas, compensación por parte del estado, antes de matarles. Y en el caso extremo que se decida su muerte se debe hacer de una forma humana, minimizando cualquier dolor, no cazándoles, ni haciéndoles sentir temor o dolor.
Esto no se ha hecho con la osa y sus oseznos, y evidentemente no se hizo con Arthur quien estaba en las montañas. Les invito a firmar esta petición y usar su voz y redes sociales para pedirle al ministerio del medio ambiente Rumano para que no permita más la caza por trofeos. Y para que el príncipe se disculpe por sus actos públicamente, y provea fondos para construir o fortalecer un santuario para osos en Rumania. También sería importante que el hombre estuviera por lo menos un año trabajando en la sensibilización con el animal para entenderle en vez de cazarle.

He was Arthur. A 17-year-old brown bear that lived in Romania. People in the area complained about a female bear with cubs that had caused damage. The Romanian environment minister gave the authorization to Prinz Emanuel von und zu Liechtenstein (Prince Emanuel of Liechtenstein) to hunt down the female, and "solve" the problem.
The hunter went and shot Arthur. One of the largest bears in the Carpathian area.
Brown bears are protected by the European Union and the Berne convention. They are threatened by people due to habitat loss. When there is conflict between humans and animals, numerous options have been suggested such as electric fences, compensation by the state, before killing them. In the extreme case that their death is decided, it must be done in a human way, minimizing any pain, not hunting them, or making them feel fear or pain.
This has not been done with the bear and her cubs, and evidently it was not done with Arthur who was hunted in the mountains. I invite you to sign this petition and to use your voice and social media to ask the Romanian environment ministry not to allow trophy hunting. And for the prince to publicly apologize for his actions, and provide funds to build or strengthen a bear sanctuary in Romania. It would also be important for the man to spend at least a year working on getting awareness with the animals to understand them instead of hunting it.
