Broad beans have been cultivated for thousands of years and the reason for this is simple, they are very nutritious, they are easy to grow and they have many uses in the garden, broad beans as a cover crop, have one of the highest nitrogen-fixing rates! So why not growing broad beans either for their healthy seeds or as cover crops?

Grow a Green Oasis: Container Gardening for Small Spaces
Tumblr media
Do you dream of a flourishing garden but lack the space for sprawling flower beds? Don't worry! Container gardening is here to transform your tiny balcony, sunny windowsill, or fire escape into a vibrant mini-paradise.
Why Containers?
Container gardens are perfect for small spaces because they're flexible and portable. You can arrange pots to fit any nook or cranny, and move them around to chase the sun or create colorful displays. Plus, they're a low-commitment option, ideal for renters or those new to gardening.
Choosing Your Containers
Think size: Bigger pots are better for plants with deep roots, like tomatoes or peppers. Herbs and smaller flowers can thrive in cozier containers.
Drainage is key: Ensure your pots have holes at the bottom to prevent water from pooling and rotting the roots. You can add a layer of pebbles at the bottom for extra drainage.
Material matters: Plastic pots are lightweight and affordable, but clay pots breathe better and add a classic touch. Consider metal or wooden containers for a unique look, but remember they may heat up more in the sun.
Planting Power
Potting mix magic: Skip the garden soil! Use a good quality potting mix specifically designed for containers. It's lightweight, drains well, and has nutrients to nourish your plants.
Picking your players: Select plants that thrive in containers. Herbs like basil, mint, and parsley are fantastic choices. Cherry tomatoes, peppers, and lettuce are great for a veggie container. Flowers like petunias, marigolds, and pansies add a pop of color.
Planting party: Fill your pot with potting mix, leaving some space at the top. Gently loosen the roots of your plant and place it in the pot. Fill in the remaining space with more mix, making sure the plant sits at the same level it did in its original container. Water gently until water runs out the drainage holes.
Keeping Your Container Thriving
Sun seekers: Most plants need at least 6 hours of sunlight a day. Pay attention to your space and choose plants that suit the amount of sun it gets.
Watering wisdom: Water regularly, but avoid drowning your plants. The frequency will depend on the plant type, pot size, and weather. Stick your finger in the soil – if it feels dry to the first knuckle, it's watering time.
Feeding frenzy: Give your container plants a boost with a fertilizer formulated for container gardens. Follow the instructions on the package for dosage and frequency.
Top Tips for Tiny Gardens
Vertical veggie walls: Utilize vertical space with hanging planters or tiered shelves to grow herbs, lettuce, or cascading flowers.
Recycle and reuse: Repurpose old buckets, tins, or even teacups as quirky planters. Just ensure they have drainage holes.
Mix and match: Play with colors, textures, and heights for a visually interesting display. Trailing plants like vining vegetables or ivy can soften the edges of pots and add a whimsical touch.
With a little planning and these simple tips, container gardening can transform your small space into a flourishing haven. So grab your favorite pots, pick some vibrant plants, and get ready to watch your tiny garden blossom!

18 May 2023. A moment in the day. That view. It never gets old. It is never the same. And yet somehow it is grounding. I look out to the mountains and hills, the valley, home. My goal is to post a photo each day in May. A moment captured during the day, calming, peaceful, uplifting. Something positive as we move into the colder months in the Southern Hemisphere and our Northern Hemisphere friends as Springtime unfolds. The #bigprune is on @ligayagarden! I usually prune at this time of the year but with food shortages and price hikes looking to be one of the continuing blessings of late stage capitalism, and the fact that I dont have any confidence in us meeting the IPCC recommendations for reducing the greenhouse has emissions, I'm pruning with the focus on food production. In the past, we've let the fruit trees grow unharvestably tall in order to shade the house but now that we have a handle on growing food and shelter producing vines closer to the house, we can reduce the tree's size a little. It'll take away a little from the super dense lushness that you've seen on the @adelaideediblegardentrail video and our stint on @gardeningaustralia but I reckon we'll still be in the running for Gawler South's densest garden. Today, I did what I call a crown prune. That means I cut down all of the thin, really tall stuff so that it doesn't fall on me when I get stuck into the bigger branches with my chainsaw. I'll have a rest tomorrow and then get the heavy work done. I've had to leave some branches though, so we get something from the trees that fruit on second year wood. If I don't do that, we'll have a year with a gap in the harvest. It'll be pruned next year when this year's growth becomes second year wood. You know that I like to make my life easy so instead of adding biochar and coffee grounds to the garden separately, when I mulch up all the pruning, I periodically drop handfuls into the mulcher so that they get spread into the mulch. It saves work and mess crushing the biochar too. This year's biochar came from Kim at @portadelaidefoodgardening. I got 30 litres of it to save me from making and activating my own. That's a messy job but I'm learning to weld this year and have a design idea for a compact, home garden size biochar kiln. Anyway, I'm buggered...time for a cuppa. _______________________________________________ #growitlocal #saurbanfood #permaculturesouthaustralia #urbanfarming #growyorownfood #pruning #frontyardfarm #productivegarden (at Gawler, South Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CfTSF_fvwJP/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

#Repost @savesunriseglossies @download.ins --- In the afternoon on the 20th of August at Glossy drinks our latest fledgling was being fed high up in the gum tree by his mum. Spencer was taking identification photographs & videos for his records. In the distance we started to hear the celebratory calls of another new fledgling leaving the safety of the nest for the first time. Spencer & I couldn’t believe what we were hearing. The calls got louder & louder when the new trio finally arrived. In that moment I felt such great joy & sadness. We were standing there witnessing the miracle of life. Gap wing had come home with his precious newly fledged daughter & mate. All of the Glossies gave out a welcoming call to the new arrival. We felt like part of the Flock as a proud dad & friend circled over our heads. I burst into tears as reality hit that this new family was soon to lose their Forest. What made me feel worse was that this was being done by God’s people to God’s creatures. How could believers like me allow this to happen. This goes against everything I have ever been taught by the Church. Just because you have legal approval doesn’t mean it is morally acceptable. What kind of Church doesn’t listen to the Community it serves. I feel nothing but disappear at this point in time. All we have left are our hopes & our prayers. Let’s hope God is listening. Our Glossies are running out of time. Spencer needs help, please. #abcmyphoto#blackcockatoo#wildlife#deforestation#habitatdestruction#savetheplanet#saveourglossies#glossyblackcockatoo#birdphotography#paulhiltonphoto#jim_abernethy#wildlifevoiceinc#theconservationkid#ellasavestheocean#worldwildlifefund#gardeningaustralia#costageorgiadis#jerrycolebywilliams https://www.instagram.com/p/CTM2cGwANBZ/?utm_medium=tumblr
