Color in Fiction! (Once You See it, You Cannot Unsee it)

White versus black, red versus blue, Gatsby’s green light, Dorothy’s ruby red slippers, Belle’s blue dress.

Color is perhaps the most ubiquitous motif used across both fiction and reality to thread people or objects through a common theme, or to pit two ideologies against each other beyond their verbal spats. Color is also perhaps the simplest motif, but that doesn’t make it any lesser in its potency.

In fiction, color is an easy way for the audience to learn as fast as possible who’s on whose side, and who their opponents are, and today, we’re going to look at a few.

But first: Crash course into color theory:

Warmer colors evoke passion or uncertainty, movement and excitement, happiness and warmth, but also rage, aggression, love, and lust. The cooler colors evoke sadness and serenity, but also youth and spring and winter and death.

Most of the time when a creator wants to juxtapose color in a narrative or other work, they’re going to use inverses, just google one of the hundreds of teal and orange movie posters. Inverses are whatever colors lie at opposite sides of the wheel. Blue and Orange, Red and Green, Purple and Yellow. These pairs show up either in opposition, or as an ensemble of one character or a group or team.

Part 1: Black and White

Yes it has grounds in racism, but black and white are also accepted to mean chaos and order, good and evil, death and life.

In a show like Lost, themes of black and white are constant. The black and white backgammon pieces, the colors of the Dharma station logos, the show’s main title card, God stand-in Jacob (Lucifer from Supernatural), and his unnamed brother, the Man in Black.

Black and white show up *everywhere,* in some places subtler than others. In fiction with a male and female lead, if they are coded in black and white, the man is almost always the one in black. Black means strength and mystery and this deep, almost corrupted darkness. White is purity, femininity, youth, and nurturing, when a woman wears it, unless she's the villain.

Villains in white are very often surprise villains:

The White Witch (Chronicles of Narnia)

Saruman (Lord of the Rings)

President Coin (Hunger Games)

Hans (Frozen), Mayor Bellweather (Zootopia), Auto (Wall-E)

Elizabeth from Pirates of the Caribbean is an interesting case. She begins the first movie wearing light colors and being trapped in the pure and lawful life of the governor’s daughter. She ends her arc in the third movie in solid black (through several costumes) a badass Pirate King and wife of the new Captain of the Flying Dutchman.

Men in black are chivalrous, dark knights, or morally grey vigilantes, silent badasses, or edgy badboys. Black is also of course reserved for villains a la Darth Vader, or Severus Snape and Voldemort and a million others. The "Black Knight" is his own trope, whether he's in a fantasy setting or not.

Women in black are temptresses, or seductive badasses. Black is the color of corruption, sin, and angst in western media 9 times out of 10 unless a narrative wants to subvert it.

I could do an entire essay on black and white in Lord of the Rings alone but here's a few other contrasts: The white Tower of Ecthelion, Minas Tirith, the "White City", the White Tree, Gandalf the White. The Black Riders, Black Speech, Black Land of Mordor, Orthanc (Saruman's Tower).

But you don’t have to make your character’s entire costumes black and white, no, you can just make their hair light and dark.

Part 2: Hair

**Possibly also because racism but we don’t have time to unpack all that right now**

When you have your male protagonist and his male foil, love interest, competition, companion, lancer, or villain, most of the time (in western media where blonds are in abundance) the more noble or “good” character of the two will be blond, the other brunet, especially in a love triangle. If two male characters have opposing ideologies on any level, they will often have opposing hair. A male and female lead duo will also tend to have opposing hair, but it’s most obvious what they’re doing when it’s two dudes and not just coincidence.

Not every brunet on the list is a “bad” guy, nor is every blond the “good” guy, but compared to each other, the brunet tends to be the more morally grey, the more corrupted, the one who’s ideologies end up getting them hurt or killed or proving them wrong. Or, the brunet faces more demons, has a darker personality, or tends to have a “shoot first ask questions later” philosophy.

This of course goes out the window if the media is set in a region or with a cast of characters who are meant to share similar features, like how there’s no blondes at all in Last Airbender (otherwise Aang would absolutely fit the pattern).

Whether that’s Frodo getting corrupted by the Ring and Sam being his rock, Jack Twist getting murdered while Ennis lives on, or the beloved Dark Knight and his bat-black demons while Harvey’s White legacy saves Gotham, next time you write a brunet and his blond competition, ask yourself just why you’re doing it.

*Side note, I’m pretty sure Harvey Dent, when he’s animated, is usually a brunet, but he’s also usually Two-Face by then and no longer a hero*

I don’t even have time for black and white in anime or the trope of the white-haired anime boy and since natural hair colors are kind of moot, I don’t think the same rules apply. But outside of the westernized “black knight vs white knight” I do want to dig deeper into color motifs in anime at some point.

Part 3: Red v. Blue and everything in between

The megalith that is the color motif extends past the white/black dichotomy.

It’s also red and blue.

If red is pitted against blue in any story, red is always the team the audience is supposed to root against, unless this is sports. Red is the color of the Sith, the Fire Nation, red eyes are seen as evil, red is blood and rage and wrath and fire. Red is the color of evil empires. Blue is the color of heroes. It’s water and healing and camaraderie, serenity. Blue is the color of rebels and underdogs.

Red versus blue is in everything from the color of lightsabers in Star Wars to the color of cybertronian eyes in Transformers, to the color of the Water Tribes and Fire Nations (with some exceptions a la Azula’s blue fire) to the colors of the pills in the Matrix. Red is the ‘dangerous’ choice, blue is the ‘safe’ choice. Unless your character is patriotically sporting the red, white and blue of the UK, USA, or France.

Villains usually only wear blue if they're ice-coded, or belong to a faction wearing navy blue uniforms.

Red versus blue also shows up between leaders and their lancers. The first one I can think up off the top of my head is Robin and Raven from Teen Titans.

Purple is also usually lumped in with the bad guys and green with the good guys, but purple and green also show up a ton as contrasting colors of the same character like the Hulk or the Joker. But both can swing either way. The Decepticons in the early cartoons for Transformers had purple everywhere and reclaimed it in Transformers: Prime. Megatron, Soundwave, Shockwave, the Vehicons, Airachnid, and the Dark Star Saber, and some G1s]. Prime also has three sets of red-blue dichotomies within their factions: [Arcee/Cliffjumper, Optimus/Ratchet, and Knockout/Breakdown].

Green is the color of more Jedi, and the Green Lanterns, but green also represents sickness or disease or generic evil energy a la Loki, Dr. Facilier (Princess and the Frog) or the Hyenas and Scar in the Lion King.

Pink is really up in the air, as is orange and yellow, especially when it comes to female characters, especially female anime characters.

But enough about color dichotomy.

Part 4: Color Singularity

Color singularly is either meant to evoke a specific emotion, like using blue everywhere to represent sadness, or it’s meant to be a bold statement in an otherwise grayscale world.

I mentioned a few at the top of the post and I’ll elaborate on them here:

In Great Gatsby, green and yellow are very important colors. The “green light” is this real object at the end of the titular character’s love interest’s dock. This light and this color are motifs that represent Gatsby’s longing for Daisy and to return to a glorious past he can never have again (it’s also the color of American money). Yellow is also everywhere in this book. It’s the color of his chekov’s car and several dresses at his extravagant party. Yellow is the color of his current life of glitz and glam and riches (and is also the color of gold). If you listen to one of the accompanying songs to the 2013 film, Florence and the Machine’s “Over the Love” recognizes the importance of yellow in the narrative.

Dorothy’s red slippers in the Wizard of Oz are hyperbolically bold, especially since the movie starts out in black and white. Color is a huge piece of this film- the Emerald City, the Yellow Brick Road, the horse of many colors. Red scientifically is the color humans tend to notice first, those shoes were made to be remembered. Color in Wizard of Oz is the symbol of the fantastical, which was really helped by the time the film was made and simply seeing so much color on screen dazzled audiences.

Red catches your eye faster than any other color, and red in a world of black and white sticks in your mind, just look at Schindler’s List.

Belle from Beauty and the Beast, along with a lot of fictional women wear blue. Blue is biblically Mary’s color, and at one time was the color marketed to women before the shift to “blue for boys”. In the original Beauty and the Beast, Belle was the only character who wore blue, because she was an outsider, and outlier, a free-thinker. Or at least, Belle is the only one who wears blue until she dances with the Beast. The live-action remake didn’t maintain this extra level of the narrative and that’s a shame.

I didn't mention eye color much above (also maybe because racism) but blue eyes, especially animated blue and green eyes, go to characters who are more hopeful, heroic, nurturing, morally just, honest, or brave than their brown-eyed counterparts, unless he's a blue-eyed Tall, Dark, and Handsome. Blue-eyed people tend to be blond, so the traits go hand in hand for the "good" character.

Weirdly enough, this also applies to blue-eyed animal characters -- your animated anthropomorphised villain is rarely going to be drawn with eyes that aren't brown, black, green, red, orange, or yellow.

Because color is also a subliminal or overt way of foreshadowing in both written and visual media as much as any other motif and recurring symbol. You can foreshadow death, or impending doom, or an eventual identity reveal, whatever you want.

You can also subvert the usual associations with specific colors. Black doesn’t have to mean evil in your world. Black can be life, too. White doesn’t have to be pure, white can be clinical and sterile and lifeless (but please no more lady villains in white pantsuits, that's its own cliche at this point). Shake it up a bit every once in a while.

So whether it’s dueling ideologies or the very forces of good and evil, a harbinger of doom or a secret tell, or community and camaraderie, or an enduring hope, you can represent it all with a careful dose of color.

I spied this fic towards the top of the kudos and kept it in the back of my mind while trawling for more HanYe fics. Thought, well it's gotta be there for a reason so should be good! ooh look aroace queerplatonic relationship 👀👀 Definitely bumping up to top of Read Next!

The amazing thing I've found about The King's Avatar is that the CP possibilities are endless! The characters are both friends and rivals, there's respect and history and it all mixes and clashes creating more possibilities and chemistries than I've ever seen in a fandom before. The fact that AllYe is so popular (and not just in an NSFW way) is testament to it, and also, in part, what drew me to this fic. Asexual representation is scant, aromantic even more so — especially in fandom (in my experience of it at least).

If I were to add a tag to describe Castles in the Sky it would be 'heartwarming'. Shadaras' writing and characterization is wonderful, and I really enjoyed the both the story and the aroace representation. They took a character with relatively little content (in comparison to others in fandom. I have not read the source material) and gave her a voice, dreams, and made me really care about her. I was touched, and after finishing it I jumped to my laptop and set about turning it into a physical book.

So, onto the details.

The thing that stuck out and stayed with me the most about the story was the aroace aspect (Shadaras fed my smol aroace heart so well), so that's what I focused on design-wise.

The title page features a large black ring, referencing the black ring worn usually on the middle finger of the right hand as a symbol of asexuality. The colours of the asexual pride flag are also represented: the text is purple; the clouds colour the page in shades of white and grey; and the ring is black. For the endpapers/cover backing I chose paper that mixes green, purple, and blue: green for the aromantic pride flag; purple for the ace. I also found the green-blue mix of colours to be rather fitting, inspired by the description of Misty Rain's HQ with the "cool blues and greens of Misty Rain's walls" (chapter 5: Transformations). While I personally find CYX's relationship with YX significant, her relationship with her team is just as important.

When choosing which cover each endpaper goes on, I thought about how the story begins with CYX and YX's relationship, and about how after it's established we see her team and it's future at the forefront of her mind. Following that line of thought I put the paper with more purple on the front cover (purple for aroace CYX), and the more green-blue paper on the back (Misty Rain's colours).

The process of foiling the cover took me 3 hours (the length of the movie RRR — good movie actually, would recommend. Which is surprising because I usually find Oscar movies rather boring). The foiling was done with a heat pen. Three hours is not the norm: first, I had the foil backwards and foiled my template instead of the cover; then, my power banks kept dying, so I had to take charging breaks, and I also went over everything again just to make sure that I didn't miss a spot; and of course I was also watching a movie while working, so that ate up some time too.

I had initially planned to bind it as a casebound book, but I didn't have enough time to do it (I was about to go on vacation and wanted to read the book in my downtime). Instead, I did a Coptic binding. The covers were pulled from the press and foiled leaving me 5 hours of sleep to spare.

I went simple on the outer covers to contrast the fun paper on the inside of the covers. I used black Cialux bookcloth instead of my green-blue 'petrol' Iris bookcloth for the contrast, and because it picks up the black from the title page. The text foiled onto the cover is a simple sans serif (Raleway, the same as used inside), and the image is Misty Rain's logo from the donghua. (Image came from The King's Avatar Wiki. It was stretched slightly horizontally because it seemed a bit squished compared to other versions seen on Google, and then traced). Using the colourful paper inside was a practical choice: I couldn't get two covers out of one sheet of paper, but one sheet would do the inner covers with some material leftover.

The sewing and construction of the book was done while camping — I'd packed up what I needed and brought it with me: the signatures (folded and punched); the finished covers; thread; a needle; and an awl. As for the actual sewing, it's supposed to be Coptic but don't look too closely. This was the second time I've tried Coptic stitching and I didn't have any instructions with me. (My first Coptic binding was a thin 2-signature notebook I did a few weeks ago. It was for taking notes at the event I was at, Pennsic War 50).

Book is primarily set in Alegreya. It's currently my favourite body font, and has a matching sans serif family. The fonts used in the title page are Raleway and Catchy Mager. Raleway is also used for titles, headings, etc. Segoe UI Emoji was used for any emojis that cropped up throughout the text (Pretty sure they're the same emojis as seen while reading on my phone and laptop). Catchy Mager was purchased from MyFont. (The first and only font I have ever bought, but I saw it used in a fic's title art and fell in love.)

Lastly, onto The Comedy of Errors, or: When-You-Finally-See-All-the-Typos-and-Mistakes-Once-You're-Done-and-Can-Only-Laugh-While-You-Cry-Inside.

Appendix's footer says 'Epilogue', so I must have missed something with the paragraph style for the Appendix heading.

Forgot about using Segoe UI Emoji font and did not include it in the About the Book.

Missed fixing the archive info for gnomen in the Author's Notes — the copy/paste of metadata into Notebook to remove formatting also removed the commas and spaces between tags.

Because I hadn't planned cover materials/design before printing, there isn't a section for that in the About the Book. Also the reason why the artwork on the cover is not credited in it, as I had not planned to use it.

was doodling the cinema trio and realised some design parallels & contrasts between all of them and thought id put it into a post because why not

design-wise fang and maisie are actually really really similar, ive always thought this but i didnt realise just how similar they are until i started listing all of it to someone i was talking to on discord

both wear sleeveless tops

both wear loose/puffy high rise pants, both of which are also cuffed at the bottom

both wear gloves

both have the popcorn logo somewhere on their design

both wear sneakers (whereas buster wears boots)

could argue both have unnatural/dyed hair colours, though i googled it and apparently it is possible for dark skinned people to be naturally blonde but its just v rare... rare enough that i reckon this point still stands

both have golds + reds as their accent colours - buster sorta has this but its much less obvious/striking compared to the other two

this makes it sound like buster is the odd one out which he v much is at least design wise. but he has some similarities with the others too:

all 3 wear something around their foreheads (bandana, sun visor, headband)

all 3 wear blue pants of varying shades

maisie and buster both have a tool (fire extinguisher / film projector) where fang does not

fang and buster both have something slung over one shoulder (suspender, film loop). theyre on opposite shoulders too (something something one completes the other)

and then there's the differences / contrasts:

this one blew my mind when i realised it but fang is mostly primary colours (red yellow blue) whereas buster is mostly secondary colours (orange purple green). feel like this point isn't that strong though if you consider that buster also has black & grey + blue jeans too, and fang's hair is arguably more purple than dark blue. but i still thought it was interesting enough to mention anyway. also, maisie is a mix of both palettes (red yellow blue / purple black + her skintone is an orangey brown).

fang's hair is made of sharp edges, while maisie's is categorically rounded, and buster is somewhere in the middle where he shares fang's sharp edged bangs but his hair curls around the back, making it more rounded like maisie's

they all have different eyebrow shapes (triangle, rectangle, oval). could probably make an argument for this being reflective of their personalities with fang having the most sharp edges (most aggressive, reckless, confident); maisie being sharp in the sense of being very perceptive, responsive, quick witted but still less intense than fang; and buster being the softest, most shy, most protective

their personality is reflected in their playstyles too which are all starkly different - fang is aggro, maisie is control, buster is defensive. also means their trio can be a well rounded team in 3v3s too (which they were until maisie and fang got nerfed lol)

lots of cool design choices. knowing the release order was fang -> buster -> maisie can also help explain why buster is so distinct from the other two as well i think. because stuff like the popcorn logo seems like a strange thing to leave out of his design until you realise oh, the designers probably weren't thinking of having that be the logo of the theatre the trio work at until maisie came along and they realised it'd make a good logo/emblem.

there is also something to be said about fang and maisie being so similar because at first glance you'd think they're complete opposites - one is reckless and carefree, the other is literally a safety coordinator. that's definitely the impression you'd get from watching the animations from maisie's release as well. but maisie's bio admits that she lowkey enjoys dangerous situations and i think deep down she is actually very similar to fang in that they're both thrill seekers. she's still far better at keeping a level head when things go wrong than he is though

buster and fang being opposites is also really cute, at least to me. opposites attract and all that. i also think buster's actually a lot smarter than the maisie release animation gives him credit for, especially considering he was able to customise a film projector from the theatre for his own personal use. writing this now though i think one thing they do have in common is they're both pussies lol. as much as i hate the willow release art where fang is in shelly's arms, i do like the idea of him being a total wimp, just because it directly contrasts against all his other personality traits. buster is also clearly easily spooked if you look at his release animations in the ghost station. but he still saves gus in that one animation and i think thats indicative of his bravery - he'll always do the right thing even if it scares the shit out of him. fang, uh... probably not as reliable for that lol

College Life, pt.3

Summary: Y/n shears a dorm room/apartment with the one and only Ghost one of the top three best players in rugby. Although he’s quiet he’s quite popular and well known, you aren’t so much. You two have been very close since Ghost made the first move but does Ghost what to take things further?

While walking home, you had decided to stop by the shop a few minutes away from your apartment. Walking in you pulled out the list you had remembered to bring with you, out of your pocket. Going up and down isles you grabbed everything you needed.

Now back in your apartment, you walked over towards the kitchen and placed the bags onto the island and started to put away all the food and drinks you had bought. Once you had done that you walked over to the coffee table and placed your bag onto it. Turning on the tv, you played your music as you pulled out your sketch book and pencils including your colouring pencils and started to work on the rugby badge design.

It’s been a while since you got home. Looking at your watch you saw a text pop up on there, it was from Ghost. He had sent ‘hey, I’m on my way back now x’ you sent a reply ‘ok, almost finished a logo idea! 👍’ and you started to finish up the last idea of the logo.

Hearing the keys move in the door, you looked up and watched as Ghost appeared into the apartment. He spoke “hey, how are you doing? Love?” You blushed a tad at the pet name then you replied “good, how are you?” He replied “better now, that I’m out of that shit hole” you both laughed as he started to put away his drink from his bag and his books. Minutes later he sat on the floor next to you and asked “how are they coming along?” You answered “really good take a look” he looked at them and said “these are amazing, you still up for later?” You nodded…

Time skip

Later in the day, you were in your room getting ready. You grabbed some warmer clothes and your boots as you grabbed a bobble hat and walked outside of your room. You saw Ghost getting ready, he was back and forth his room and the kitchen grabbing what he needed and you stayed out of the way.

Once he was ready he spoke “you ready to go?” You nodded and spoke “thought it was at 4:30?” He spoke “yeah but us players go early so we can train a bit” you nodded and he used your words “you learn something new everyday” you giggled at him remembering what you had told him earlier.

You both walk over to his grey sporty car and both get in. He started up the car and started to head over to the field. In the car you listened to music as you watched people walk on the pavement (sidewalk) as you drove by.

Now at the grounds, you got out of the car and asked Ghost “where do I go now? Waiting by the changing rooms you greeted some of the boys you knew and wished them luck for the game. Once Ghost walked out he grabbed the stuff off of you and passed you his rugby hoodie and suggested “you should put that on, you’ll get cold just standing at the sidelines” you didn’t argue. So you threw on the hoodie with his initials underneath the badge ‘S.R’ you felt proud for some reason. You felt comfortable and honoured to wear thee Simon ‘Ghost’ Riley’s hoodie and especially his rugby one.

Walking over to the pitch, you spoke “do you want me to mind your stuff? Like your water?” He nodded and handed everything over to you. He playfully placed a hand on top of your head and gently shook it and said “thanks, Y/n” you smiled at the playfulness and spoke “go train” he nodded and jogged over to his coach and team mates.

After training and everyone starting to arrive you watched as the team headed over to your direction considering your by the teams water since o/f/n (other friend) was helping the team as their brother played for them. You chatted to them and then heard the boys walking over as they all talked about the other team, their rivals. You handed Ghost his water and waited for him to hand it back over. Once he did you gestured him to come closer. You spoke “I wish you the best of luck, Si” lucky for him his mask covered his blushing face as you called him Si. He spoke “thanks, love” he pressed his forehead against yours as a sweet gesture.

Time skip (it’d be borking if I explained a whole game of rugby)

It was the last minute of the game and Ghost’s team was tied with the other team. But lucky for Ghost’s team was they were given an advantage and had a line out at the 10 yard line, which is by the try (score) line. The hooker threw the ball to the person who was being lifted and they then passed it to the scrum half (no.9) and he being Soap paused it along to Gaz and it made its way down to Alejandro before he got tackled. After the quick ruck the ball was passed to Ghost and he had been able to side step two players and tried the wining try.

Everyone was ecstatic and cheering loudly. You headed the whistle blow as the game had now ended. You watched the team celebrate and then head over to you and your friend. Ghost ran over and picked you up surprisingly and spun you around out of excitement. You laughed as he put you down and you said “congrats!” He spoke “your now my good luck charm” you both laughed as the boys hydrated themselves before walking towards the changing rooms.

Now standing outside the changing rooms, you congratulated all the members as they exited the changing rooms and headed towards the pub for food.

Ghost walked out and spoke “come on, charm, let’s go grab some grub” you smiled and followed him. He spoke “when we get in the car I got to ask you something” you nodded as you opened the door. Getting in, he buckled himself up and spoke “ok, so uh I don’t know how to say this” you spoke “take you time if you need to don’t overthink it” he spoke “so.. I have been liking you for a while now since we became closer and I was wondering.. would you like to be my girlfriend? You don’t have too if you don’t like me but I was just wondering?” You felt over the moon. You spoke “of course, I really like you too!” He lifted his mask a little and asked “can I kiss you?” You smiled and closed the gap as you do kissed passionately as if you two only had a few seconds left to live.

Pulling away you spoke “come on! We need to celebrate!” He chuckled and started to drive towards the pub. Once he got there he put the car in park and turned it off. Getting out you looked over to Ghost as you watched him stick his hand out for you to grab. Gladly excepting it you held hand as you crossed the road and headed into the pub.

Walking in Ghost spoke “come on, let’s get some food” you nodded as the two of you headed downstairs and towards the kitchen area. Ghost had gave you a carton of chips and a sausage, you grabbed some bread and handed it to Ghost and then grabbed some for yourself. Grabbing everything you both headed upstairs and towards the bar area.

Seeing all the team and their friends or family you both sat with Soap, Gaz, Price and Alejandro. You looked around and asked “hey Alejandro, where’s Rudy?” He replied “went to the toilet” you nodded as you sat next to Ghost. You all tucked in as you talked and ate.

Ghost asked “anyone want a drink, while we go up?” You stood up and grabbed your phone. Walking over to the bar Ghost was behind you not shortly after. You spoke “hi, could I get a Pepsi, please?” The lady nodded behind the bar and told you the price so you used your phone and then grabbed your drink. Then Ghost ordered some drinks since some of the lads wanted some.

After a while you all decided to call it at day and headed home. You held Ghost’s hand as you both walked over to the car. You asked “how many drinks have you had?” He thought for a second and replied “four?” You heard the hint of question in that so you spoke “nope, your not driving, hand over the keys tough guy!” You both chuckled as he surrendered his keys and got in the passenger seat.

On the way home you talked about the game and how entertaining it looked and how well he and his teammates played. But also the whole time he hand a hand on your thigh, comfortable for the both of you.

Getting in you watched as Ghost practically threw himself onto the sofa. You laughed at the sight, you spoke “so I’m thinking, how about a movie night?” He spoke “yeah, I agree” you spoke “ok go out comfy clothes on, I’m going to do that then grab some popcorn” he nodded.

Now sat down in your comfy clothes you both watched movies all night long till you both fell asleep together in each others brace under nice comfy blankets, doing the things you both dreamed of doing together.

Would it be weird to ask how you plan out your embroidery designs? If not weird and you have the time/spoons do you have any tips?

Oh no worries, I am the OP! @handmadehazefromtheheart is my craft account. ^w^ You were referring to this post, right?

Asking isn't weird at all btw. I like questions. :3 Though I dunno if my answer will be the most helpful, since I'm still pretty experimental with my embroidery.

For the brain, I literally just doodled onto the fabric with a water soluble pen.

For the latest piece before that, I traced the outline + important features of a picture I had of my girlfriend by holding fabric pinned in a hoop up to my laptop screen. Then I flipped the fabric around in the hoop so it was right ways up. I did the same with her music logo, which I made for her birthday this year.

Mostly, though, I've been actually drawing out patterns on paper.

I trace them onto the fabric using a white screen behind it. (I literally just Google "white" and open an image full screen.)

Getting the colors right is hard, but I'm getting the hang of it I think.

For the brain, I decided as I went which sections would be which shade of teal on the fly.

For the portrait, I gathered various shades of coral (the color of the InfiniTints prompt it was for) and then separated them into groups based on where I thought each shade would work best. I had a hair pile and a skin pile, and in each pile I determined which would be used for lighter areas and darker areas based on the picture I was using.

For the In Decay logo, I did pretty much the same thing but with whites and greys, though I haven't shown off the full thing yet. (I'm going to do that in a special way. :3c Stay tuned.) The mouse had the same process. The mouse was actually the first one I did it like that for, and I love how it turned out—and the fact that a duplicate made as a commission came out so nice after.

You can kind of see on the clover pic above that I actually labeled it for where I wanted which shades of green. I should probably do that more.

I've mostly been working with long and short stitch, but working on this pre-made kit has helped me get a sense of how to use different kinds of stitches together.

So far, the brain is the most deliberate in terms of different stitches.

uhhh can I still ask for Riddle and or Idia be given the Four Sword somehow. The sword that can split the wielder into four aka FOUR RIDDLES AND OR IDIAS :D

So I went on google to research :'3

Found 2 interesting things.

dunno anything about Zelda games, but damn this was a miss

I bring these up, bc the first one seemed funny. The other one is something that I would like to actually use if we are gonna hypothetically gib these 2 the sword.

Now for the cases:

Riddle's case:

If he came to have the 4 sword, it would be Ace's nightmare. The 3 different Riddles I think would split from the original would be his most proeminent emotions. Riddle is a very emotional guy at the base, so I see the sword splitting that up in 3.

The 3 emotions I would think of are:

Anger(pray for Ace :'3)-in an orange-y fire palette. He has a much stronger attack than og Riddle, but his defence is little to none. His name would be Ro.

Sadness(this one doesn't do a lot since he cries so much)-Blue all the way for this one. His gimmick is that he's great at escaping and pushing away enemies, more versatile in situations that require terrain use. For the name, I fell on Remi.

Love(be it platonic or romantic, this one is a cuddlebug)- Very barbie-pink in terms of palette. This one is set on protecting everyone. not the best attacks, but an impeccable defense. As a name, his given one would be Riri, bc it sounds cute. :'3

Of course, being clones, they are dissapearing when og Riddle runs out of energy, but they are meant to complement each other and as such, making the og actually the versatile one.

For interactions, I see that Ro is very set on beating Ace up. Remi is just sitting in a corner and being all gloomy and sad, thus no one can actually do smth about it. And Riri is the peace-maker for either the Riddles or other people. He has that nice way of expressing affection, ya know. :v

Idia's case:

I bolded in Riddle's case that he gets split by emotions. Well, It's important here, bc unlike Riddle, Idia's clones resemble stages of his own life in terms of mentality. Baiscally, Idia's 3 clones are split by Idia's different views along time. Thus we have another kind of chaos, since these 4 can't see eye to eye enymore.

The 3 views I thought of are:

Innocence(the only happy guy I guess :'3)- This one stems from before the incident, thus is an Idia who always wants to go on adventures. A bit rushed, but he has the spirit, ya know? :'3 His primary collor would be bright purples, while his name would be Idy, bc if u know, u know U-Ub

Denial/Delusion(oh this one is difficult)- post the incident, thus this one is used to dissassociate and always deny bad things. For him, nothing bad ever happens, because he doesn't want to admit it. For a name, I came up with Ei, because it's short. Along that, his colors are always in tones of grey, despite his very 'outgoing' personality :v

Uncaring/Feral(a personal favorite)- Filter? wut that? This one has absolutely no shame or self preservation. Want to burn the school down? He's already doing it. A menace and he knows it. He just doesn't care about outside opinions anymore. WILL BITE TOO. Unlike the other 2, this one has different shades of green and even warpaint marks on face, bc why tf not??? He was names Dante, but everyone also reffers to him as public enemy no.1.

Ortho is always protected by every version of Idia. Althrough, the Idias themselves have a hard time getting a point across or getting to an agreement. They only agree on smth when it's for Ortho's sake. :'3
