Quick Reviews:
Due to changes in my work schedule, I’ve had a lot more time to read. I used the library app Hoopla, I’ve started downloading comics to read. Toward that end, here’s a few of my favorites: American Cult: A Graphic History of Religious Cults in America from the Colonial Era to Today, edited by Robyn Chapman – a non-fiction title from 2021, this anthology comic talks about fringe religious groups…

Danny Phantom meets Superman. More accurately I should say that Danny Fenton meets Clark Kent.
Let me make this clear cause people seem to forget this: superman is smart. Clark kent is a very intelligent guy. Hes an INVESTIGATIVE journalist. He works with Lois Lane whos a multiple Pultizer prize winner and you know damn well that Lois wouldn’t work with anyone that cant keep up with her in both wits and smarts. He’s good at his job and in some comics he gets Pulitzer Prizes from some of his articles as well. Dude is dumb but he’s smart if you get what I’m saying. High Int. Low Wis.
With that in mind, During an assignment by Perry White, Lois and Clark meet the Fentons in their Amnesty residence to get some quotes on an article that discusses “Everything we thought didn’t exist is now real. Superheroes, Aliens, even Vampires, so why do we not Believe in Ghosts?”
Clark Kent spots Danny and notices instantly that MANY things are wrong with this child. His shoulders are hunched in a way that is intentional and tensed. Like he doesn’t know if he should fight or flee. His eyes are darting around and constantly taking in their surroundings like he’s waiting for something to barge in. His heart is beating far slower than it should. The kid intentionally makes his chest rise and fall but he’s not breathing in any oxygen. All of those are concerning but they can happen in metas. The thing that isn’t normal is that Clark can’t hear any of Danny’s other organs working. Like the kid is a revitalized corpse and his body only thought to bring back half of its needed functions.
So Clark does some digging. He doesn’t want to tell any of the Justice League because this isn’t a Superman job, this is a job for Clark Kent. He gets some help from Oracle and with her word that she won’t say anything to batman, He agrees to update her regularly about the kids situation.
Oracle sends over some VERY concerning documents from an organization called “The Ghost Investigation Ward”. Oracle tells Clark that she’s working on tipping off the Bats and Birds so they can help dismantle the organization.
While sifting through the documents Clark comes across a profile of a “Danny Phantom”. As I said, Clark isn’t stupid. There is definitely a profile of Danny Fenton as well since he’s the son of two world renown ghost hunters. He puts the two and two together and uncovers just the horrible treatment that Phantom has been receiving from his parents, the government, and his peers. Clark is outraged and can’t just stand aside and let this kid suffer. So he makes another trip to the Fenton residence under the guise of needing another quote and sits Danny and Jazz down and tells him that he knows of the terrible lab safety, the immoral experiments his parents do on the regular, the neglect of the kids in pursuit of scientific discovery. He knows and he wants to help. Clark tells Danny and Jazz that there is an apartment available right nextdoor from his and that he can help them get to a safer location and apply for emancipation.
The Fenton kids are shocked at this guy and his immensely kind heart. Danny knows something is up though. Something is up with Clark Kent. He looks like all his life would be spent in the gym when he isn’t at work and yet Danny can’t find a thing on Clarks interest in working out. His baggy clothes somewhat cover up his muscles but his frame is far too wide to be hidden. Clarks heartbeat is slightly faster than the average persons. No human eyes could be that startlingly sky blue. And Danny knows that he has seen Clarks face somewhere but he cant put a pin on it.
The Fenton kids agree and they get brought to metropolis and the emancipation case is no problem with the evidence Clark managed to collect. The kids get the apartment next to Clarks and Clark helps them grow and get better mentally and situationally. Clark knows that in a way he’s trying to make up for his neglect on Connor but he still knows that helping these kids is the right decision.
After a month or so, Clark and the Fenton kids have a rhythm of meeting at each others apartments, getting doted over to make sure that the fentons are well fed and have everything they need and are getting settled into their new life.
Clark hasn’t told the league. Oracle keeps her promise to keep the Fentons out of Batman and the Justice League’s radar. Clark knows that he will have to tell them soon eventually. He knows that things like this wont last. He tries his best to keep these kids happy and support them how an actual caring parent should act.
A few months into the Fentons stay in Metropolis on a cool autumn afternoon, Danny is sitting on a beanbag chair reading a ratty old book that Clark lent him as Clark is typing away on his computer writing up an article for the Daily Planet when Danny looks over to Clark and says,
“I’m Phantom.”
Clark pauses typing and shoots a small smile towards danny, “I know.”
Danny nods in relieved acceptance as Clark straightens up from his hunced over position on his computer.
He pulls back his shirt collar slightly to show the blue suit and red cape. “I’m Superman.”
Danny looks at him and smiles, “I know.”
They both just sit and continue reading and writing with soft smiles on their faces. Comforted at the exchange and that it’s finally out there and eachother knew.
After a while Danny’s obsession gets to be too much. He tells Clark about it and that he has to find a way to sate his obsession of protecting and Clark accepts that it was only a matter of time and invites him to meet the League.
When Superman brings Danny to the Watchtower, saying that the rest of his fellow superheroes were shocked would be an understatement. The Man of Steel and this ghost kid are talking like a father and son.
To say that Batman was pissed that he wasn’t informed of this child is also an understatement. But there is also some amusement and respect under that frustration. Superman managed to keep this kid under wraps and didn’t even alert Batman. Superman smirking and saying under his breath to him “Looks like the World's Greatest Detective isn’t so great huh?” Makes Batman respect the man even more.
In the Watchtower, Danny meets up with Teen Titans/The Team/Whatever They’re Called Now, and meets Conner. Conner is understandably pissed and spiteful that Danny got to have Superman as a father figure.
Conner knows that Superman treating Danny this way is definitely a way of him trying to make up for the faults and breaks he had with his parental relationship with Conner. he agrees with himself that he shouldn’t hate Danny for having Superman as a Dad and the two get along like tinder and matches. Connor still has a grudge against Superman don’t get me wrong, just not as much as before.
Sometimes while the League is in battle, Superman likes to just look for Danny and watch him hold his own against world ending threats. Danny is now truly confident and it’s no longer a facade. He’s no longer hunching into himself to look smaller. He laughs more often now and seems to be genuinely happy. Superman fondly looks at his son as his kids eyes flicker with green fire as he says a shitty ice pun and freezes Metallo in his tracks with ghostly ice.

Just binge read all of the Resident Alien comics and holy shit the show did not do them justice. They were so good and I can't wait for the next issue!!! Comic Harry is such a good guy and the murder mysteries were awesome. I thought it was gonna be way serious but found myself laughing quite a bit. I was kinda whatever about Asta and Harry having a relationship but now I'm a Vandertrees truther 100%. The show fumbled that one real hard lmfao

Hi can you tell me more of your Rise Alopex whst relationship she has with each of the turtles
Omg yes!
My original plan was to make a rise comic series that had Alopex as one of the main story branches. I have been busy with work and haven't had much time to work on it lately but things are starting to slow down so I might have time to go back to it soon.
Much like the other iterations of Alopex, she was created on purpose, but this time she was created by John Bishop as some kind of animal super soldier for the EPF(she's not the first one he’s created either) and she was raised in the EPF by her ’handler’(think like a K-9 handler in the military or police force, someone who raises, trains, and ’handles’ the animal is usually considered a handler) he is currently unnamed for the time being.
⬇️More under the cut⬇️
Her first time in New York was just before the invasion, John Bishop ordered that she(along with some other EPF mutants) were needed in the base in New York so she was flown in from the California base. She was there during the invasion and for a short while after before she was flown back home although she found it a little suspicious how Bishop seemingly knew about the invasion beforehand. Koya and Takeshi(tiger claw) are also mutants in the EPF.
Almost a year later she is requested to come back to NYC for a mission. She was raised on the belief that she was a soldier to protect the earth and all its residents from aliens. This is also when she meets turtles up close for the first time.
Her relationship with the turtles starts off a bit rocky because she is technically working for ’the other side’. To the Hamato clan she's a villain and to her, they are a thorn in her side every time she sees them while on a mission. She generally tries to avoid them as much as possible rather than engage.
The first turtle she meets is Donnie and oh my stars do they start out hating each other guts. It was a fight at first sight for those two. A pull of a tail and a bite to the arm, chaos ensued. The animosity does cool down a little between those two(eventually) and their quarrels fall into some kind of rhythmic rivalry. They throw punches and insults at each other. The first time Leo sees how they interact he calls them an old married couple and they both get offended by this statement (she doesn't meet the other turtles till months later).
She won't get to meet Mikey or Leo for a good long while, at least not while she is still working for the EPF under John Bishop. There’s a lot of character development that has to happen inbetween before she really meets the rest of the brithers a bit more personally.
The first time she meets Raph is when she falls into hidden city and accidentally bumps into him. It's only a quick interaction but she looks at him and thinks he's a dinosaur because he is just MASSIVE. but that is the only interaction that happens between those two for the time being. They don't introduce themselves or anything at this moment they won't even see each other again till she is out of the EPF.
Tumblr media
The first time Leo meets Alopex, she is critically injured and ends up getting help from the team medic(Leo).
Mikey would probably meet her after she gets some medical attention and he would realize that she is the one who was annoying his purple-clad genius brother Donnie lately but she was always left unnamed during his rants. Mikey secretly ships it thinking that his brother stepped into an enemies-to-lovers trope. Which in all honesty is true. But those two don't get there for a long time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But I think for the most part they would all get along. She and Donnie will also get along too... eventually… their bickering arguments are always a good show, remember to bring popcorn.
Alopex hates Bishop's guts, she always has since she was a kit. She was mutated at a very young age by Bishop because his research showed that the younger the subject is at the time of mutation the more control they have over it and the better they can train certain habits of their species in or out.
Tumblr media
She has trauma regarding certain punishments while growing up, one of which is the muzzle. To Bishop, the muzzle punishment has shown to be the most effective towards her. (it's not a normal one either, she can't take it off herself)
She's about 17 years old present day, 16 during the invasion. She's technically a red fox but since she has melanism her fur is mostly black with a few white areas, on her chest and stomach, each paw, tail, mouth, and dots for eyebrows and bright yellow eyes.
Tumblr media
She doesn't have powers since her mutagen is not from an oozesquito but from a research institute called TCRI, or at least that's what she's been told.
She loves pumpkin bread, pumpkin muffins, and just about any kind of pumpkin-flavored treat, however, she's also a fan of fried chicken. Favorite color is green.
She also loves motorcycles and has a good understanding of how machines and engines work because of it. (this is something that Alopex and Donnie could possibly bond over)
Tumblr media
She hates heights(specifically when flying, planes, jets, helicopters, all of it), the muzzle, John Bishop, and Takeshi(mutual hate, more story on him later if interested), and tomatoes.
(my art style changes multiple times throughout this post, some sketches are from months ago and some are more recent)
Please let me know if you have any more questions about this au!

more resident alien posting. predictions... spoilers so beware
well. i'm upset that the shows going to have a difficult time having more serious scenes now. and that's probably what it's going to try and set itself up for.
i reaaaally would have loved to see this show do something ACTUALLY different and good. by different i mean in terms of writing and not necessarily drifting from source material. yes i'm still sour over last ep, but i wouldn't be AS sour if everyone on the show didn't treat harry and asta's relationship as "mother and child." and also if the show didn't take such a nose dive into the type of comedy it's putting out.
ALSO? IN A RECENT INTERVIEW? Sheridan going on to state that harry would lose his first """love""" (more like lust. awesome that a show trying to teach human emotion gets those two things mixed up) and then realize there's love everywhere or something? why does this feel like "weird" people are forever left to the role of outcasts. already fucked it up once i guess the guy's trying to fuck it up more. could've just left it at "he'll lose his first love, then he will have to reconcile with his feelings." but he had to drop in that last corny bit.
like. the show's source is already good. i don't understand all these decisions they're making to try and make it seem "unique." and now to get numbers back they're dumbing it way down. WHICH. BY DOING SO. HOW ARE YOU GOING TO HAVE YOUR DRAMA? like how am i supposed to take anything seriously in the show. i *could* in season 1 and parts of season 2, but now it's just whatever. it's too goofed up for me to care. and now people who love the goofy won't give two shits about whatever message you want to drop or plot you want to develop. i dont give a shit about the greys!!! i dont care what theyre doing!!!! who gives a fuck if theyll blow up the earth. none of the characters really care anymore either. oh well!!!
also, predictions kind of. i'm not trying to say this will be the be all end all but it certainly could be a turn the show takes. in one of the issues of the comic (suicide blonde i think), harry is investigating the "suicide" of a woman. by the end of the issue, he catches up with her ex-lover and ex-roommate. they were both ladies. and the girl who died had a drinking problem btw. and was constantly seeing boys. i'm all for gay couples on screen as a gay guy myself but it'll feel so cheap to pair darcy and asta together despite the way theyve been played on screen. maybe its doable. i don't know. but i genuinely could care less considering the overall tone of the show's drifted more towards a sitcom than anything else. i think the small handful of 40+ year old gay wine moms would probably love it, but the vast majority of viewers wont. either they'll hate it and say it's forced diversity (there's already people saying that about the gay couple on screen this past episode) or it'll be another nothing moment to a further nothing story. if anything it'd feel one step removed from tokenization, considering they see harry as a manchild. ableism! show's trying to seem fucking wholesome but they can't be bothered to care about their nd viewers. like "haha look we have a main gay couple!!! what do you *mean* our show has rampant ableist tropes, we have a gay couple!"
i'm just so bummed. the show's cornered itself into a sitcom so meaningful moments aren't a thing anymore. plus the comparison of harry to a child is really getting at me. like he's a grown man as a human, and hes a grown alien thing as an alien. it's such a big slap in the face to any person who cherished the witty and unique story telling of the first season... like.... i don't know.... people who would've been fans of the comic too? i have small gripes about the comic, but at least it takes itself more seriously. but the show runners haaate the people who read the comics. why? i dont know. well maybe i do know. probably seen as too nerdy and weird for their idea of the show's viewerbase. despite the fucking basis of the show being weird and nerdy.
they couldve done the darcy asta thing better if they do go down that road. i'm just saying i wouldn't be surprised. they already scared off everyone who would've cared for something like that, so i don't know how they'll manage to find an audience that cares. everything in s1 was so organic and felt real!!!!! now its just!!! nothing!!!!!!!!!!
im also thinking about the fact that after posting that one resident alien drawing i did, i've had to block tons of people because they're freaks. loud and proud conservatives. man this shit sucks.

You did a good job with the Smokey art! (A lot better than me)
Anyway... What do you think about Smokescreen pumped full of Predacon pups?
Hnnnh sparked Smokey would be se cuuuuute!!!
But anyway
I'm gonna use this ask as my gateway to explain how I think Cybertronian reproduction works (because I love infodumping)
Infodump starts under cut
Tumblr media
To start, I acknowledge that technically Cybertronian reproduction is very bland and not discussed much in the continuities because, let's face the facts for a sec.
Hasbro wants to sell toys to kids
Now, with that in mind, we aren't going to ignore the comics or continuity cannon explanations for how they reproduce. From my limited research the most general acceptance is that the reproduce through budding like ameobas
Tumblr media
Pretty horrific but the science behind it is that if a bot gets enough electricity shocked through it it's protoform splits an bam! You got another Cybertronian.
And yes yes I know about cold construction and hot spots, but this is apparently THE cannon way they reproduce.
Anyway
I theorize that this method of reproduction does work, but is extremely harsh on the bots body.
Hence where my idea comes into play.
Tumblr media
Spark bonding between two bots is more than just a means to form connection, it also produces enough electricity to create what I call an after spark, in essence a new life source. This life source however doesn't have enough charge to grow on its own, so it will go to the bet best suited to "carry" the new lifeform (hence the term 'sparked').
It resides in the "carrier's" spark camber for a bit, gathering charge and growing in strength.
Tumblr media
When a bot is "sparked" they will have this tiny "sparkling" for a while until it grows enough to move down to the gestation chamber that's where the "sticky" interface comes to play ;)
Tumblr media
The naughty fun times provide the now developing sparkling with transfluid which in turn builds the protoform. It has to have a LOT of it to properly develope as it is using the energy from the charge built during the sticky interface to keep itself alive AND the fluid builds the body. Once the sparkling is ready it comes out of the bot just like in the movie Alien. Because it's science fiction okay?
Anyway.
Thankyou for coming to my TED Talk.
[Questions? Intrusive thoughts? Drop em in my ask box!]

Time: Magic and Mastery
Tumblr media
"Do the difficult things while they are easy and do the great things while they are small." -- Lao Tzu
Potent yet succinct, this seed of wisdom contains an essential key to a life of mastery.
In his seminal comic book masterpiece titled The Invisibles, Grant Morrison speaks of the 5th dimension--a dimension that exists outside of space and time.
(Morrison happens to be an all time favorite author of mine, as well as a formidable philosopher-magician. As an aside, he openly shares how his insight into the 5th dimension came as consequence from his abduction by aliens in Katmandu in 1994.)
What does it mean for a dimension to exist outside of space and time, according to Morrison?
One consequence of a dimension outside of time's flow is that nothing grows there. Growth both implies and requires the dimension of time, of change. And so he concluded that the utility of the 4 dimensions (3 dimensions of space + 1 dimension of time) was to grow things.
As humans, we often feel as though we are victims of time. Life is short, we are mortal, and everything we are is ultimately eroded by time. It's also why we regard important accomplishments as things that will stand the test of time, things that will outlive us.
But the wisdom of Lao Tzu's aphorism is a major tip for how to use the dimension of time to your advantage. If you start now and start small, growing and building over time, incredible feats are possible for you.
It also makes me think of a meme I once saw, which went something like this:
"In time travel stories, whenever people travel back in time, they are always careful because they're worried that small changes can have drastic consequences for the future. But no one lives that way in the present."
To put it simply: small changes in our daily lives add up to big things in the future. Whether that's growing a meditation practice from 5 minutes a day to 1 hour, taking up a new exercise regimen, learning a new skill, or changing the entire direction of your life.
In college, I majored in English with a concentration in creative writing. After I graduated in 2011, I worked in the movie industry for a few years. Now I'm more than halfway through my training in head and neck surgery. How did that happen?
In 2013, I decided to abandon my pursuits in film (that's another story) and re-orient my path toward becoming a doctor. It would be 7 years before I finally had my MD and started residency. I took it all one step at a time. Eventually it added up to where I am now.
I underwent a slow but intimate transformation during the time between when I made that decision and received my diploma. The same goes for my meditation practice and exercise regimen. I started small, grew it daily, and now I have something solid with both.
While sudden and significant life changes can be exciting and dramatic, it is our sustained effort over time that can be relied upon most to endure with us for life. When formidable aims and accomplishments are reduced to their initial components, we realize they are possible even for us. Manipulating and working with the passage of time in this way is its own kind of magic.
And in the end, it is not the objects we accumulate nor is it the experiences we gather that comprise a worthwhile life.
The real manifestation of a good life is a good person.

Favorite new character you found from any media as of late?
(A favorite of mine lately has been The General/Mr. Villain from Mr. Villain’s Day off. Though I started it back in late January. It’s a really funny cute slice of life anime about an alien villain from the perspective of the equivalence of a power rangers having fun days off and a love for pandas, I totally recommend it!)
Tumblr media
This is a picture of the show it has about 13 episodes in sub and the season just finished and has been a real help for me when I’m stress and been a treat at the end of the week when it came out.
Sorry if this was long!
I also just wanted to try and send some good vibes back your way since you always give them back with your wonderful writing and art! I hope you have the loveliest of lovely days!
Favorite new character from media... That's a great question!! I really have to sit and think about that I. . . I kinda struggle with finding characters in media that I am super drawn to??
I am pretty jealous of folks who get crushes on characters in media! 🤣 It unfortunately doesn't happen a lot with me, so I typically swoon over my characters to make up for that ehehe.
But uhhhHHH let me think... has there been any character that I have found cute?...
Nos-4-A2 from the Buzzlight Year of Star Command cartoon! It's a old cartoon, but rewatching that show was a fun NOStalgic trip! 🤣
I have also been playing a beta version of a Nsfw game called Cloud Meadow and I think Brontide has a fun personality, between being this tanky warrior vs the silly blushy guy you see in the art sometimes. It gives me the vibes that he gets silly and shy with the romanto and that is very cute! = D
Also the weird silly clown man that appears? He is weird, he is silly, he has puppets on his hands that talk to you. Is he throwing voices or are the puppets sentient? I have no idea!
Though I have to say I am personally really drawn to the shadowy NPCs you run into, they are human shaped but drawne in a way where their features are obscurred.♡A♡ ) You can't tell if they are just regular humans or if they are some kind of shadowy beings and.. I really like the mystery and think they are cool looking. Also the resident mage has a really neat design and I wish you could talk to them more too. . .
Of course I take a liking to the guys that you can't romance in the romance game ahahaha 🤣🤣🤣
Oh! Yes, I think I have read a little bit of that!! That is such a cute comic! (And an anime? Heck yeh!) I am so glad you found fun stuff to read with cute characters that you enjoy! >//U//< ) That is the best!!
Thank you for chatting with me, I really appreciate it! 💖 I hope you have a restful weekend = D

Writing and Rewriting Bracknell Horror
Tumblr media
So here's a terrible secret: in 2019, hot on the heels of the original Moonlight on Roseville Beach zine, I put some notes for a little adventure called "The Bracknell Horror." I had no illusions that it was a great investigation scenario. Still, it showed off a few things about Roseville Beach, including places and people in the town as well as the queer people who lived/visited there. It went to a location inside the setting without requiring deep lore, added some jokey Easter Egg references to Lovecraft's The Whisperer in Darkness, and included some comically easy to use alien tech.
The problem was, I didn't really like it.
People at con sessions had fun, but there was nothing particularly special or interesting about the scenario itself, and any scenario would have been great in its place. Also, while I like to say Roseville Beach is a game of "horror comedy," there wasn't much actual horror here other than some Lovecraft references. That's also true of my other Roseville Beach scenario "The Haunting of Flora Bly," though the book has four more scenarios that are richer in horror potential.
Tumblr media
But this summer, just before running it at A Weekend with Good Friends, I rewrote it. I talked about some of those rewrites on my blog just after the first run-through, but more have come up as I've continued to playtest this.
First, while the initial scenario centered around a wealthy occultist-adventurer named Simon Mathers, the revision has greatly warped him from that initial vision. In the early drafts, he was an occultist willing to give Dreamlands entities the bodies of Roseville Beach residents in return for access to the Dreamlands. In the new one, he's returning to our reality after 20+ years in the Dreamlands, hoping to find a body for himself (the temporary one he constructed is collapsing) and his two Dreamlands familiars.
In the original, the cult-like group of followers worked for Mathers and planned to keep doing so. In the new, none of them like each other, and each of them have their own reasons for working with him (and one might even try to kill him).
Tumblr media
Third, I let some of my OSR influences show. Beyond making each of the named NPCs a faction of one, I've also added some NPC rivals (all of whom might end up becoming collaborators) who also all have their own motivations and agendas for finding out what Mathers' cult is up to.
Finally, while the original notes told GMs to pull from the PCs troubles and connections to determine who Mathers' cultists have captured, the new one includes a chance to target the PCs themselves, giving at least some of them a chance to sneak in and explore the Bracknell while the cult is setting up the ritual, adds some specific NPCs the cult targets, asking instead how the PCs and their contacts/troubles connect them with those people, giving their troubles and connections a motivation to insist on coming along whether they'll be helpful or not.
Tumblr media
Dai Shugars, Roseville Beach's art director and visual designer, has put together some incredible maps that allowed me to spend less wordcount describing the space and more giving info on NPCs, creating news stories and book snippets that can serve as physical clues, and creating a better sense of how the Doom Clock progresses.
The text will come to Itch for slowfunding next Tuesday, and the final zine will include the adventure, pregens, new strange events that tie to this mystery, and the basic rules of play, so you can try it out even if you don't already own Moonlight on Roseville Beach. Think of it like a horror-comedy investigation version of a Fighting Fantasy Game Book, but maybe gayer.
This is my chance to draft and preview some of what's coming. You can pick up Moonlight on Roseville Beach (Itch | DriveThru | Spear Witch | IPR) and the current two-issue zine bundle (Itch | DriveThru), or just follow-along with the zine project that will get bundled up in Dim All the Lights. Or you can back our upcoming reprint and hardbacks Kickstarter!

G/T Stories Appreciation
For everyone who’s followed my stories over the years, you may already know that I’m a pretty inconsistent contributor to the G/T community, but this year has been by far the most challenging! As much as I’ve wanted to keep writing Borrowed Courage and post more art (and fanart) on here, I’ve been struggling through the final year of my psychology degree at university, and while it’s almost over, it’s taken up a lot of the time that I used to spend engaging with the amazing creators here on this platform.
So basically, I’m writing this post to give all of my favourite giant-tiny stories (and their authors) a well-deserved shoutout! There have been a few series that I’ve binged while stressed from thesis-writing this year, and a heap more that got me through high school and plenty of other stressful times in life, so without further ado, have some recommendations!
A Tall and Small Collection by @narrans - Definitely one of my staple reads this year! For anyone wanting a wholesome yet angsty story about a borrower family and their resident human, this one is a must! Narrans is an incredibly talented writer, and I can’t wait for the much-anticipated paperback of ATaSC coming out soon!
Watch Your Step by @not-a-space-alien - Hands down one of the most creative takes on the ‘human catches fairy’ trope. Thistle is such a well-developed character, and the interactions he has with his human roommates are so entertaining (and have literally made me laugh out loud at times!). If you’re after a slow burn trust-building story, then I couldn’t recommend this one more!
Nobody’s Fool by @ratcatcher0325 - I binged this whole story the other night after submitting an essay and it was incredible! I usually don’t read too many pet trope works anymore, but this one warmed my heart for a good reason. I loved the journeys each character went on throughout the story; especially Penn’s. It's always so empowering to read about a character overcoming prejudices and using their story to inspire others!
A Fraction of Justice - another one by @ratcatcher0325 which deserves just as much praise as Nobody’s Fool! Alexander is such a strong yet vulnerable character, and I am loving he and Natalie’s story so far. Seriously amazing writing, especially during the emotional scenes!
Online Dating Can Be Hard by @duckit7 - Seriously such a sweet story about two people developing feelings for each other in a mixed-size world. I love the world-building in this one, and how realistic the characters and their struggles are. Definitely worth a read if you like slow burn romance with a sprinkle of angst!
Gulliver’s Children by @rosabea6 - This one’s a webtoon about a teenager with a size-shifting disease. Once again, some crazy world-building, and scarily realistic scenes. Also, the art is absolutely incredible! I’ll flag that this one is for mature audiences since there are some violent scenes, but overall hands down the most amazing G/T themed comic I’ve read!
Perspectives Series by @hiddendreamer67 and @arc852 - I'm not part of the Sanders Sides fandom, but this series was wild! I can’t believe how many different scenes and tropes you guys managed to write over such a short period; it’s beyond impressive. If I had to pick a favourite, it would have to be ‘Switched Perspectives’, since I’m a sucker for size switching shenanigans (and in this case angst)!
Borrowtober Series by @Nicole08196 over on deviantart - This one doesn’t get old! A super cute story about a family of borrowers and their two resident humans, with a really fresh perspective on the lives of borrowers. Nicholas and Darius would have to be my favourite pair; their guitar practicing bonding sessions are so wholesome!
Trust Series by @creatorofuniverses and @neonthewrite over on deviantart - As if I would forget mentioning the trust boys. This one has a special place in my heart, since I basically went through high school following along with the series (and now here I am at 23)! For those who haven’t read it yet, Trust follows the lives of two viri (who pretty much live like borrowers) and their human counterparts, and has four main AUs so far. Definitely worth checking it out!
Spirit of Adventure - also by @creatorofuniverses , with a supernatural twist! Basically a viri who can see ghosts, his ghostly friend and a team of human detectives out fighting crime. What could go wrong?
The Prince and the Faeling - another amazing series by @creatorofuniverses which you can find at @askthefaeling . It’s an angsty story about a spoiled prince and his snarky fae companion.
Brothers Apart by @nightmares06 - This series definitely takes the throne for most prolific! Even if you’ve never watched Supernatural, Brothers Apart and its many AUs explore just about every G/T theme under the sun, and with incredible writing to boot! If I were to pick a favourite, it’d have to be a tie between ‘Brothers Adopted’ and ‘Brothers Lost’, but all of the AUs are amazing in their own right ^_^
I also want to give a special mention to @neonthewrite ’s Bowman of Wellwood, @keydekyie ’s The Moth and the Bear, and @bittykimmy13  ’s Christian and Gloria stories for being my G/T nostalgia bombs, the first two of which are now published! If you haven’t already, go check them out!
I’m sure there are many more writers who I’ve missed, so please add them in if you’d like! Huge thank you to you all for doing what you do! ^_^

Books That Deserve to Be Inducted ( & Re-Inducted) into Coquette 'Girl Blogger' Canon
Tumblr media
White Oleander by Janet Fitch
Everywhere hailed as a novel of rare beauty and power, White Oleander tells the unforgettable story of Ingrid, a brilliant poet imprisoned for murder, and her daughter, Astrid, whose odyssey through a series of Los Angeles foster homes-each its own universe, with its own laws, its own dangers, its own hard lessons to be learned-becomes a redeeming and surprising journey of self-discovery.
Tumblr media
Jesus Saves by Darcey Steinke
From one of the most daring young writers in America, Jesus Saves, a New York Times Notable Book of the Year, is a suburban gothic that explores the sources of evil, confronts the dynamic shifts within theology, and traces the consequences of suburban alienation. Set in the modern launch pads of adolescent ritual, the strip malls and duplexes on the back side of suburbia, it's the story of two girls: Ginger, a troubled minister's daughter; and Sandy Patrick, who has been abducted from summer camp and now smiles from missing-child posters all over town. Layering the dreamscapes of Alice in Wonderland with the subculture of River's Edge, Darcey Steinke's Jesus Saves is an unforgettable passage through the depths of the literary imagination.
Tumblr media
Sula by Toni Morrison
Nel and Sula's devotion is fierce enough to withstand bullies and the burden of a dreadful secret. It endures even after Nel has grown up to be a pillar of the black community and Sula has become a pariah. But their friendship ends in an unforgivable betrayal—or does it end? Terrifying, comic, ribald and tragic, Sula is a work that overflows with life.
Tumblr media
Earthlings by Sayaka Murata
As a child, Natsuki doesn’t fit in with her family. Her parents favor her sister, and her best friend is a plush toy hedgehog named Piyyut, who talks to her. He tells her that he has come from the planet Popinpobopia on a special quest to help her save the Earth. One summer, on vacation with her family and her cousin Yuu in her grandparents’ ramshackle wooden house in the mountains of Nagano, Natsuki decides that she must be an alien, which would explain why she can’t seem to fit in like everyone else. Later, as a grown woman, living a quiet life with her asexual husband, Natsuki is still pursued by dark shadows from her childhood, and decides to flee the “baby factory” of society for good, searching for answers about the vast and frightening mysteries of the universe—answers only Natsuki has the power to uncover.
Tumblr media
Brutes by Dizz Tate
In Falls Landing, Florida—a place built of theme parks, swampy lakes, and scorched bougainvillea flowers—something sinister lurks in the deep. A gang of thirteen-year-old girls obsessively orbit around the local preacher's daughter, Sammy. She is mesmerizing, older, and in love with Eddie. But suddenly, Sammy goes missing. Where is she? Watching from a distance, they edge ever closer to discovering a dark secret about their fame-hungry town and the cruel cost of a ticket out. What they see will continue to haunt them for the rest of their lives.
Tumblr media
Convenience Store Woman
Convenience Store Woman is the heartwarming and surprising story of thirty-six-year-old Tokyo resident Keiko Furukura. Keiko has never fit in, neither in her family, nor in school, but when at the age of eighteen she begins working at the Hiiromachi branch of “Smile Mart,” she finds peace and purpose in her life. In the store, unlike anywhere else, she understands the rules of social interaction—many are laid out line by line in the store’s manual—and she does her best to copy the dress, mannerisms, and speech of her colleagues, playing the part of a “normal” person excellently, more or less. Managers come and go, but Keiko stays at the store for eighteen years. It’s almost hard to tell where the store ends and she begins. Keiko is very happy, but the people close to her, from her family to her coworkers, increasingly pressure her to find a husband, and to start a proper career, prompting her to take desperate action
Tumblr media
Breasts & Eggs by Meiko Kawakami
On a sweltering summer day, Makiko travels from Osaka to Tokyo, where her sister Natsu lives. She is in the company of her daughter, Midoriko, who has lately grown silent, finding herself unable to voice the vague yet overwhelming pressures associated with adolescence. The story of these three women reunited in a working-class neighborhood of Tokyo is told through the gaze of Natsu—thirty years old, an aspiring writer, haunted by hardships endured in her youth. Over the course of their few days together in the capital, Midoriko’s silence will prove a catalyst for each woman to confront her fears and family secrets
Tumblr media
Luster by Raven Lelani
Edie is stumbling her way through her twenties―sharing a subpar apartment in Bushwick, clocking in and out of her admin job, making a series of inappropriate sexual choices. She is also haltingly, fitfully giving heat and air to the art that simmers inside her. And then she meets Eric, a digital archivist with a family in New Jersey, including an autopsist wife who has agreed to an open marriage―with rules. As if navigating the constantly shifting landscapes of contemporary sexual manners and racial politics weren’t hard enough, Edie finds herself unemployed and invited into Eric’s home―though not by Eric. She becomes a hesitant ally to his wife and a de facto role model to his adopted daughter. Edie may be the only Black woman young Akila knows.
Tumblr media
The Moth Diaries
At an exclusive girls’ boarding school, a sixteen-year-old girl records her most intimate thoughts in a diary. The object of her growing obsession is her roommate, Lucy Blake, and Lucy’s friendship with their new and disturbing classmate. Ernessa is an enigmatic, moody presence with pale skin and hypnotic eyes. Around her swirl dark rumors, suspicions, and secrets as well as a series of ominous disasters. As fear spreads through the school and Lucy isn’t Lucy anymore, fantasy and reality mingle until what is true and what is dreamed bleed together into a waking nightmare that evokes with gothic menace the anxieties, lusts, and fears of adolescence. And at the center of the diary is the question that haunts all who read it: Is Ernessa really a vampire? Or has the narrator trapped herself in the fevered world of her own imagining?
Tumblr media
Their Eyes Were Watchung God by Zora Neale Hurston
Fair and long-legged, independent and articulate, Janie Crawford sets out to be her own person—no mean feat for a black woman in the '30s. Janie's quest for identity takes her through three marriages and into a journey back to her roots.

Read the first part of that prompt and thought it was going to be that Danny is Darkseid’s son. Idk a lot about Darkseid but now I can’t stop thinking about that idea
the “first part of that prompt” mentioned.
Fuck the past tHREE attempts to respond to this crashed. Here’s hoping that this one works.
I enjoy this idea a lot since there is a TON of ways this could go.
First of all: both the inhabitants of Apokolips and New Genesis are home to the same race: New Gods. They’re basically a very hard to kill superhero race. The New Gods reside in the 4th dimension but can occasionally create variants of wormhole technology (Motherboxes/Fatherboxes. A very simple summary: Sometimes both planets have Motherboxes, sometimes New Genesis has Motherboxes and Apokolips has Fatherboxes. They’re sentient computers that are used as a catchall for various technological feats needed in the comics.) to go to the 3rd dimension and most commonly visit Earth.
With that in mind there is a lot of questions on how Danny grows up. Does he get boom tubed to Earth as a means to escape New Genesis/Apokolips? Is he brought to earth as a baby, a child, or a teenager? Does he still have his genetic superpowers or are they somehow suppressed until the ghost portal?
Is Danny swapped with Miracle Man instead of Orion? Does Orion exist in this universe? If so, Does Danny view him as an older brother/younger brother figure, an enemy, or someone to challenge his place for the next in line to be the ruler of Apokolips? Does Orion know that Danny even exists at all? If Danny was swapped with Miracle Man, does Orion become the Big Bad in the story since he no longer is raised by the Highfather and no longer has New Genesian morals? Is both Danny and Orion given to New Genesis for the peace treaty? Is Danny exiled to Earth and no one knows he exists? Does Danny stay on Apokolips and becomes Phantom, Ruler of Infinite Realms and is an even curler ruler than Pariah Dark? Does Danny Not Look Human?
On that note, Danny is an alien from another dimension. His anatomy is not at all the same as earthlings. Does his parents know that he isn’t human right off the bat? Does this make them more accepting if/when he comes out to them as Phantom? Does Danny pass as a human and not know of his New God heritage or is he aware of it? Was being the part of a superhero race a part of the reason why he didn’t die in the portal accident? Is Danny FAR more powerful than in the show since he’s from an OP superhero race and is now a ghost with even more abilities?
Danny definitely would have some anger issues and trouble keeping himself calm. Apokoliptians are commonly genetically evil aligned warriors who are meant to combat the forces of good. Think Devils Vs Angels but Jack Kirby style. Danny (if nothing obstructs just abilities) is the basic super humanly strong, fast, thinks fast, etc. as a New God. Having Dan be if Danny gave into his urges for violence and rage and becoming a loyal follower of Darkseid could be a very interesting take on his character.
Oh also I gotta shove the idea in there that Big Barda finds Danny and trains him in the Female Furies combat regimen. (VERY short summary for Big Barda: Mister Miracles wife. Apokoliptian. Was one of Granny Goodness’s Female Furies before ditching Apokolips to be with Scott. The ‘big’ is because she’s insanely tall. She’s an insanely skilled combatant and is super pretty and will wipe the floor with her foes entrails.)
Y’all there’s so much you can do with this look at the possibilities of funky fics you could write. I’d highly recommend doing at least a small google about the New Gods to get an idea of the races backstory, the history of the comic, and the technology they possess. I didn’t detail everything in my Darkseid and Orion explanations so I’d HIGHLY recommend doing some research yourself.

Hey! Can you please tell me about these books? You got titles? I really wanna do 12 year old me a favor and read them.
omg yes absolutely
so i ended up only reading about 2.5 of the 3 books of the Machiko Noguchi saga, published 1994 - 1999, these are what the first AVP movie is taking from in some form (although they're more set in the Alien timeline of future space travel instead of modern day like the movie) but the first book is still near and dear to my heart. The good two are written by Steve Perry and daughter Stephani Perry, whomst! by the way! If you're familiar with the Resident Evil novels, SD Perry is Stephani Perry here!
This book is the one you wanna read, it's a closed story and rewired my brain chemistry: Aliens vs. Predator: Prey, 1994.
Tumblr media
(Thriftbooks link, although I bet you can find it for even cheaper?)
This first book stays with me even if I'm not directly thinking about it; around the same time I read it I had DigimonWorld Dusk for the NDS and I got a friend to get Dawn so I could have best boy Guilmon, and I named him after the main Yautja character Dachande. Ever since with Digimon games, Dachande is the name I give my Guilmon. This book is great because it's told from both Machiko's perspective and Dachande's, so you see a glimpse into Yautja society and thought/language as well as how Machiko saw them. I haven't read it in years but it was formative stuff.
The second book, Hunter's Planet, was by a different author in the worst way and it shows; not only was the plot like, weirdly dumb in a modern failed attempt at a blockbuster way but the second book was my first run-in with like "An editor should've caught that" type mistakes in mass published stuff. It's because of this book that when I write a sequence of a lot of dialogue without tags/noting who is speaking I go back and comb through it because, personality aside, the author of this second book David Bischoff would write long discussions between Machiko and her android buddy but it was immensely difficult to tell who was saying what because they pretty much spoke exactly the same. Kind of disappointing, imo skippable but maybe it's good in a B-Movie way now.
The third book, War, marks SD Perry's return! And it really showed from what I remember of the half that I read of it, sadly I did not finish it.
Since then I think Machiko has appeared in comic runs and is referenced in other things in the more print-world stuff rather than movies. AVP1 the movie was an iteration on Machiko's story, and I really dont' remember it being that bad of a film. I think people were upset because they interpreted the marking of the woman's face as romantic (???) instead of respect, which, to the book's credit and less the movie's, the movie didn't take its time to explain Yautja culture and probably assumed the audience would figure it out. Which, some did, but the backlash was so great that in AVP2 the Yautja, the only other sentient alien in the movie, did not interact with humans at all. Which tbh made for a worse movie! So. Y'know, happy reading!

8. Pre-N52 or N52?
Let's be real guys the new 52 was a bad idea. Like the idea isn't new. Marvel did it at least 2 times. Franklin's new world and Ultimate comics. Where you just reset continuity and rehash actual good stories. And writers rehash good stories even when continuity is normal. But yeah it alienated fans but we got several gems from within the reboot. Also people ignore the few titles who reboot didn't touch. Like Green Lantern and Legion of Super-Heroes. Also people sleep on Grant Morrison's Action Comics. Clark was a chaotic agent of socialism and it was awesome. Honestly, and I say this with no exaggeration, I really miss the 2010 status quo in the DCU. There was a lot it was building to and we just didn't get it. As I understand Superman Grounded was canceled halfway thru and some n52 stories felt like the writing was being phoned in. (im not naming names) But I am altogether happy to see how the landscape has evolved.
10. Death in the Family or Death of Superman?
Guys you know I'm not really a Batman fan. Death and return of Superman all the way. I never actually read Death in the Family. Like 3 years ago I collected the whole saga. I loved it. I read the original trade back in 2008 as I was getting into comics. I was 14 years old then and I was stuck in a group home away from my family for almost a year. I was really sad and seeing Superman die and sacrifice himself to save everyone really got me emotionally and felt extremely cathartic for me. Like I was feeling a lot of emotions and I was separated from my family and didn't want to think about that. So "mourning" Superman was a way for me to cry and express those emotions while not feeling helpless about being a ward of the state. Like I could control being sad about Superman cuz I know he comes back y'know?
23. So you prefer Superman and Wonder Woman, Batman and Wonder Woman, steve Trevor and Wonder Woman or does it even matter?
It doesn't matter really. At least to me. Here's my take tho. If you like SuperWonder your name is Frank Miller and spend a lot of time thinking about how superpowers affect how people fuck. If you like WonderBat you grew up watching the Justice League cartoon and you have good taste in cartoons. Steve Trevor of course is the classic ship and really I feel Steve is best as DCU's resident Simp and that is an important role in the ecosystem.

The backstories of Morpheus’ Ravens
Matthew-  Formerly Matthew Cable. (Source Swamp Thing volume 2, mostly issue 84).    Matthew worked for the DDI (Department of defense intelligence) and was married to Abby Arcane (who would later be Swamp Thing’s Love interest). Matthew was not a very good man. He was an alcoholic and he was physically abusive to Abby.
Thanks to comic book shenanigans he briefly ended up with God-like powers.  But he ultimately ended up in a coma caused by a drunk driving accident.  While in his coma Matthew ended up in The Dreaming, in the cave owned by Eve (one of Morpheus’s minion, a former horror comics hostess who can look like a young woman, a middle aged woman, or an elderly woman at will). Her cave is not very far from The House of Mystery and The House of Secrets, near the Shores of the Seas of Night (The ocean of The Dreaming).  Eve likes to punish misogynistic men in their nightmares, it’s her specialty.
In the cave Matthew learns to not be so misogynistic and every time he becomes abusive toward Eve (who he dreams is his wife), she takes her crone form (which is improbably strong) and turns the tables on him.
In The Waking World Abby discovers that Matthew was taken to a corrupt hospital that was harvesting his organs while he’s still alive.   She finds him kept only alive by machines.  HIs body ravaged.  Most of his vital organs taken, even his eyes are gone.  Abby goes to turn his life support off out of mercy... In The Dreaming Matthew leaves Eve’s cave, crawling out after having learned his lessons. Morpheus meets him at the mouth of the cave and offers him the chance to serve him as his raven but he has to let go of his dying mortal life.
Matthew briefly wakes up just in time to shut off his life support systems himself so Abby doesn’t have to do it.  As Matthew dies he tells Abby to forgive him and forget him.
As a raven Matthew comes to prefer being a bird to being a man, deciding he makes a better raven than a person.

__________________________
Jessamy - Not a lot is known about Jessamy’s past.  We know that she was Morpheus’s raven in the 1700s, and possibly earlier.   Her first appearance in the comics is in Thermador. She was very clever and helped to orchestrate the plan Johanna Constantine (eighteenth century character) needed in order to rescue Orpheus from the French revolutionaries. In the comics she’s a solid black raven.
Tumblr media
_______________________________   Aristeas - Also known as Aristeas The Raven and Aristeas The Poet.  Aristeas was a poet in Ancient Greece. This one was a real historic figure and figure of mythology.   It is believed that after he died he became a raven and served Apollo.  It’s a running gag in The Sandman comics that Morpheus is repeatedly mistaken as Apollo since Apollo was often believed to be the father of Orpheus and in The Sandman Orpheus is Morpheus’s son.  After serving Morpheus for two hundred and forty years Aristeas chose to return to the human world in the form of a man but found he couldn’t re-adjust to being human so he asked to return to being a raven.
Tumblr media
______________________________________
Lucien - Lucien (Lucienne in the TV show) is the first raven.  Lucien’s current form is likely not Lucien’s original form.  Lucien can still take raven form at will, as revealed in The Sandman issue known as The Hunt.
The Dreaming (1996-2002 comics) claimed that Lucien was a white raven who was punished for some offense and made black. And that he was probably also Adam from Adam and Eve but Neil Gaiman has since debunked the notion that Lucien was Adam. And that version of The Dreaming has been de-canonized and ignored.   No other comic has ever claimed Lucien was once a white raven.  He is, canonically, the first raven though.
That version of The Dreaming also gave Daniel a white raven named Tethys made from the soul of a dead alien who resided in The House of Secrets sub-basement. She was created to replace Matthew after he was accidentally shot by Lucien and chose to stay dead. She does not exist in any other comic. And Matthew is very much alive in current Sandman canon.
Delirium believes there have been “eleven and a half” ravens.
All of Morpheus's ravens were once mortal.   And he usually pays them with some sort of boon.  If they ever decide to not be his raven anymore they get the choice to either move on into the afterlife, or become a new dream entity, or become human again or to remain a raven and roam in that form but no longer serving Morpheus.
