The rules of his superpowers feel vague, and as much as I like exorcists and daddy issues his stories always seem to not quite click.

Leaving it up to Tumblr to choose my next comic chronology in like... 2 months when I'm free of green lantern (2 months is not very generous I fear)

Reasoning under the cut :3 (very long)

Duke- pretty short (less than 200 issues), I really like his character from what I've seen of him. I think it will also be hell (as is the nature of most batman adjacent chronologies) but it'll be worth it... Nice and short one and also swag character

Jefferson- 1. Black lightning is very fun early on and 2. I've already made the spreadsheet so I just have to read it. He's just like... A very cool character and I like him a lot so far. I just am gods scaredest soldier with long chronos (which his isn't too bad but it's ALSO batman adjacent and those are so scary)

Barbara - my best friend Babs but also if I have to reread the killing joke I AM killing Alan Moore ok. In theory I love her SOOOO much. In practice I think the fact I'm having to keep a "how bad is the disability rep" counter next to each issue says a lot. Unfortunately. Also already made this spreadsheet but I think it would be a very bad and good time.

Clint- again in theory would be fun. He seems right up my alley but alas if I have to see Tony Stark I do fly into a blind rage. And unfortunately I think he appears a lot... And also unfortunately I think I would suffer due to blonde man disorder ok (as I always do)

Silhouette+Aaron- package deal bc they're siblings. I've already started this one and then stopped because whoever is writing the early stuff SHOULD go to hell for what they're doing. For those unfamiliar, silhouette is one of the only heroes I've ever seen using forearm crutches (pretty awesome) and her power is that she can kind of travel via shadow iirc? Which would be really cool if they didn't like... Make her lose all her clothes and mobility aids when she's doing this. Which is why I quit. But she's very very cool minus that (and in my mind... I know she's written better later on) and her brother is his own can of worms (in... Definitely a way). In theory tho I rly gotta get through their stuff

Theodore - first off: I am a FIEND for marvel 70s horror comics. Second off: he is better than swamp thing. Third off: his big red eyes. But to be serious though like .. the Steve Gerber and Gerry Conway era of man thing is SO good and like .. political in an interesting way. I just need motivation to get around to it. Also he's cutesy ok!!!

Jason Blood- another consequence of the 70s horror era fan but this guy has CRAZY lore. He's a medieval knight who got possessed by a demon thanks to Merlin and then he's just lived through the centuries and become an occult guy. Reasons why I stopped this one - sometimes old horror comics are bad and horrible. And also a like 60 issue Garth Ennis written series. But I do really wanna finish his stuff bc he's like .. DC's version of Hellstrom (which. Genuinely awesome character, if you're interested in older horror comics def check his original run out <- my plug for my silly husband hellstrom who sucks so much or whatever. He's rly good tho seriously)

Jennifer - I've already made her spreadsheet and started it but the writers are soooo fucking bad most of the time. It's actually horrific. Pros for her- pretty good character when written well (her hellcat series stuff was REALLY nice for me. But I'll always hype up patsy walker aka hellcat at any chance) cons for her- the misogyny ... And my reward for finishing it is watching the she hulk show. So take that as you will

Dracula- I started his stuff bc I was PROMISED Gerry Conway (who is like.. one of my top 5 writers. He does amazing old horror comics and made a bunch of very cool characters). And then he left like 2 issues in and it went downhill. Some of the same authors who did some of the good (other marvel vampire who is redacted for my own safety ok) issues did stuff for drac. In theory this would be silly campy 70s horror comics fun. In practice oh my god I am gaining new authors to hate so bad...

Marvel Team-Up #32 - writer: Gerry Conway | penciler: Sal Buscema | inker: Vince Colletta

Daimon Hellstrom teams up with Johnny Storm to exorcise a demon that is plaguing a reservation in Oklahoma. Daimon loses control of his evil side and fights with Human Torch. I liked the fight and it was cool to see that Torch’s fire has no effect on Hellstrom. The nova light that Torch ignites lets Daimon know who is possessed and it was a cool plot device. This was a fun read and added more of Marvel’s rules on demons. I gotta say one negative about this issue is the pink skin tone that was used for indigenous peoples is on display here and it’s really unfortunate and took me out of the story. I don’t understand why this was such a common occurrence in the 70’s. It’s annoying and gross if I’m being totally honest. Other than that, this was an enjoyable read. I like it when Hellstrom interacts with other superheroes and this might be the best team-up I’ve read with Daimon.

I don't like that panel/characterization of Wanda and Stephen's relationship. It's innacurate for both of them. I do feel like she would be more sensible to people she cares about... but I remember Aaron was going for a "humorous" Wanda even if that meant making a random innacurate comment. That year was a weird year for me as a fan of Wanda. I like her solo and it's really the only book anyone could use as an example of good mental health rep with Wanda in it, but there are elements of it.

I don’t like it either! I think they respect each other very much, and whenever this respect is lost because of certain writers, I tend to ignore it. But to be fair, Aaron also changed many things in Stephen’s personality to make him a goofy and clumsy character (which I personally don’t mind).

It’s not exclusive to Wanda, though, since Jericho also called Stephen out for being late, assuming he was hanging out with a lady. And then the same tune keeps playing with Wong and even Clea when it comes to Zelma and her relationship with Stephen. It’s tiresome, I won’t lie. His “dog” trait was something that I definitely ignored in v4, as I said before.

About Savage Avengers... Mmmm, it’s complicated. I’m not sure which kind of narrative you appreciate the most in comic books, but I can tell what Savage Avengers is about. First of all, it’s about Conan. And Conan is a pure testosterone character, which means you’ll certainly deal with the toxic masculinity of hunting, drinking and getting laid with a disgusting number of women. But it’s also a book about many, many characters, such as Elektra, Stephen, Victor, Jericho and so on. And I like how Duggan writes them.

He portrayed Stephen and Victor’s relationship perfectly (and one of his favorite comic books is Triumph and Torment, which means EVERYTHING to me). This was the main reason why I was so invested in Savage Avengers in the first place. Mostly because I’m a loser for Stephen and Victor and this is not a secret to anyone, I cried over and over about them for several months haha.

When Victor left, I stayed for Stephen, but also because Illyana came. And here’s the second reason why I’m so invested in this book. I’m also a loser for Illyana and Stephen.

So you see, this is extremely personal for me because they’re my top 3. I have no rights to judge this book whatsoever. I’m absolutely suspicious to tell you whether it’s good or not haha. I’m here for my faves, basically.

Now, with a semi-magic team assembled, another reason emerged. I’m also soft over Daimon and Jericho, and curiously enough, I’m so glad to see Logan’s dynamics. I was not expecting this kind of soft moment with Bats. It truly warmed my heart.

The strange thing about Savage Avengers is that, while you have to sell testosterone and manliness because of Conan, there are soft moments between the characters. Victor and Stephen were totally married. I was also okay with Stephen and Elektra. They’re soft and hot at the same time. Lastly, I love daughter Illyana and father Stephen.

So this book has everything I ever needed in my life. And it’s also fun sometimes. The jokes are silly but I don’t mind. I’m not a complex comedy type of person myself. On top of that, Gerry also writes Marauders, which is weird because Marauders is all about WOMEN loving and supporting WOMEN. I can’t explain what happens when you switch Marauders to Savage Avengers, I really can’t.

I know this didn’t help at all and I’m sorry. I’m just here for Stephen, Victor and Illyana, honestly. I understand it may not be appealing to certain people. I wouldn’t be reading it if Stephen weren’t there. But he was and, you know, I’m a very devoted fan. Why am I still typing this essay? Ugh, I’m sorry about the long post. I do that sometimes.
