Vingadores Selvagens - Review
Tumblr media

Cold winter: Red Sonja
RED SONJA
Category: Marvel comics
We cannot talk of Conan the Barbarian without talking of his female counterpart and rival”, the famous Red Sonja, the She-Devil with a Sword, who became THE iconic picture of the fantasy archetype of the “barbarian woman”.
Red Sonja was created by Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith in 1973, first appearing in the Marvel’s comic of “Conan the Barbarian” before getting her own comic in 1975 – though she still appeared in other affiliated comic book series, from various Conan series to the Kull ones. Marvel stopped publishing Red Sonja stories in 1995 – but she was promptly picked up by the Dynamite Comics in 2005, leading to several new series, at first keeping Marvel’s continuity before rebooting the character several times and going into various spin-off. And, of course, we have to mention other medias – such as the Red Sonja novel series written in the 80s, her apparition in the “Conan the Barbarian” television series, and a few movies done about her from the 80s to the 2000s (and with more supposedly in production).
Red Sonja lived in the Hyborian Age, a mythical long-distant past of our Earth, before the beginning of recorded history but after the fall of Atlantis. She once lived peacefully with her family in a small house on the steppes of Hyrkania  – until one day a group of mercenaries came. Her entire family was killed by the vile men – her parents and brothers –, her house was burned down and she only survived because the men wanted to take her virginity. After being raped and left in front of the corpses and burning ashes of her ancient life, she cried for revenge, and her scream of rage was heard… Scathach, the Red Goddess, appeared to Sonja and gave her unmatched fighting skills, making her a fearsome and dreaded warrior… But upon one condition: that she will never have sex with a man, unless said man manages to defeat her into a fair combat.
Thus begins the adventures of Red Sonja, the She-Devil deadly with a sword (she carries a double-edged sword, but also has a small dagger if she needs it) and whose immense strength makes her able to outmatch men in wrestling or hand-to-hand combat. She travels through the lands of the Hyborian Age, slashing, beating, stabbing any kind of monster, beast or antagonist trying to prevent her adventures ; herself seemingly never carrying any scar from her various wounds. The only other thing she loves more than fighting is drinking (even though when drunk she gets even more unstable and violent than she already is), and one of her weaknesses is her near incapacity at learning how to write or read. She spends her time fighting corrupted men, defending innocents, making those that offend her pay dearly or being hired as a mercenary; she also has a recurring villainous antagonist, in the form of the evil sorcerer Kulan Gath. She even became Queen of Hyrkania at some point (to match Conan’s ascension to royalty).
Red Sonja can be recognized by various iconic elements. Her mane of red hair. Her double-edged sword (which the novels turned into her father’s old weapon, and that ended up gaining magical properties after killing so many men, sorcerers and demons). And… by her chainmail bikini. We need to talk about the chainmail bikini.
Red Sonja’s most iconic look is a bikini made of chainmail. Everybody heard about the “chainmail bikini”, and she made this look very popular in fantasy. It actually existed before – it was typical of female fantasy heroines to wear them in the 70s, but Red Sonja definitively took it to another level. She actually wore a more reasonable outfit in her first appearances, with a long-sleeved chainmail shirt, and short red pants – but the chainmail bikini look stuck to her. And… this is both what made Red Sonja iconic, and one of the culmination of Red Sonja’s criticism. Red Sonja, we cannot miss it, is a sexualized character, the very embodiment of the “sexy warrior” trope done… weirdly. Her “bikini-armor” is ridiculous, dangerous, unpractical, and is barely excused by her inhuman abilities. In fact, for a fierce and strong warrior she lacks any kind of “battling body”, being tall and slender with barely any trace of muscle. Because a female warrior has to be a sexy and beautiful warrior, that’s the rule of the 70s and 80s. And let’s not even talk about how her entire life and character is influenced by sexuality, from her “rape as backstory” to her specific weakness tied to sexual relationships… There is clearly a “woman-object” aspect here. BUT, and this is where things get important, Red Sonja is also, surprisingly, a feminist icon. Because she is precisely a fierce, strong and terrifying female warrior who equals or outmatches other men (and even defeated Conan a few times). She is as brutal, and drunk, and crass as other barbarians can be (despite her always looking like a super-model). She is a free, independent and wild figure of revenge and justice managing to get to the top in an ancient patriarchal world… Which results in a very strange, double-edged, ambiguous status of the character, both praised and dislike for how she was created. This notably led to several writers trying to come up with justifications, explanations or reflections about the “chainmail bikini”, and trying to apply some logic behind simple sex-appeal. For example in one version, Red Sonja deliberately wears this outfit to “distract” men with her beauty while she cuts their head off, using their own lust and misogynistic vision of women to make herself look less threatening and fearful – they probably can’t imagine that a sexy woman wearing nearly nothing can stab them in the heart or kick their head off. Another version rather insisted on Sonja wearing barely anything so that her immense agility couldn’t be hindered by a heavier armor. A third version even decided to have Red Sonja herself complain about the unpracticality of the bikini outfit – but despite recognizing its flaws and problems, refusing to let go of it, because with time she grew attached to it and cannot imagine herself going to battle dressed differently.
- - - - -
The actual origins of Red Sonja are quite interesting… Yes, she was invented by Robert E. Howard, the same man who created Conan. But, the original character of Howard had very little to do with the character as formed by Marvel. Most notably, Howard’s Sonja, named “Red Sonya of Rogatino”, was a female swashbuckler of the 16th century Europe. Her appearance story, “The Shadow of the Vulture”, was about the siege of Vienna by the Ottoman armies in 1529. It was Marvel’s own decision to turn her into a barbarian warrior, and to move her to the fabled “Hyborian Age” of Conan, not just to surf on Conan’s big popularity at the time but also to allow various team-ups between the two characters.
That being said, the character as established by Marvel itself has been prone to various changes throughout her various incarnations and reincarnations (because yes, the topic of reincarnation is often used to explain how one version of Red Sonja dies before another pops up). For example, some writers decided that she was never raped by the mercenaries, and never received a ban on sexuality from her goddess, and in turn became a true pansexual – and I insist. She isn’t just bisexual – she is also willing to get into bed with gods, spirits and supernatural entities. Other writers also decided to get rid of her superhuman abilities and supernatural status by removing the whole “Blessed by the goddess” aspect, and rather depicting her as a woman that trained hard all of her life and became the strongest woman of her land and age. Some series add to her immense strength, swordmastery and agility the divine power to wield any weapons – which means she can turn any object into a deadly battle artefact.

What is the deal with Elektra x Strange? Why did they sideline Clea?
It was just a quick affair, they both agreed it was merely a one-night stand before they could face Kulan Gath and risk their lives in the process.
Tumblr media
The Clea thing is a looooooooong story but to sum up, Clea and Stephen went separate ways in the 90's (she went to the Dark Dimension to lead the rebellion against Dormammu and he stayed to protect Earth and take the mantle of the Sorcerer Supreme back from Salomé). They were mystically married but never by law. Since then, few writers cared for their relationship, she was almost completely erased from Stephen's life and so he went through his "single" era, which is basically tons of quick affairs and only one solid relationship with Linda Carter that didn't last.
The reason why is not clear but apparently all important characters except for Wong were forgotten or killed (Sara, Rintrah, Morgana, Victor, Imei etc). She was mentioned a few times and even made a few appearances after that but the main one, the long-awaited reunion, is terrible because Cullen Bunn kinda ruined their marriage by portraying Stephen as a cheater.
Tumblr media
Thank the Vishanti Jed ignored all that and is slowly building their relationship back throughout DODS and Strange v3.

Into the Anthill pt 32 - Seeing Double
Similarly to the Avengers Forever plotline, we've got a different Yellowjacket running around causing problems for Hank again. This one isn't just flirting with Songbird and being a douche though. After a few rowdy bar-fights, this YJ abducted and replaced Hank, imprisoning the "real" one for at least 6 weeks while he ran with the Avengers. Janet noticed that he was acting strangely the whole time but chose to do nothing about it like always.
But don't worry, I'm sure his friends will figure it out just in time for the skrulls to replace him again.
🐜🐜🐜
Avengers vol 3 #28-34, Thunderbolts vol 1 #43-44
The Avengers accompanied Silverclaw to her ancestral home in Costa Verde, which had fallen under Kulan Gath's control. Several of the Avengers attempted to enter the city but had their clothes and personalities changed within the city's limits. Troublingly, Hank transformed into Yellowjacket in there. Needing time to plan after they left the city, Hank used his powers to enlarge cabanas for the team to use overnight. The next day, Silverclaw foiled Gath's plot to murder her mother (the volcano goddess Peliali) and was granted reserve Avengers membership. Hank, who had been feeling ill since he was changed by Gath's magic, agreed to put himself through tests back home and figure out what was wrong with him. Unbeknownst to Hank, somehow Yellowjacket was there too.
All of Hank and Tony's tests found no irregularities in him to explain his spasms or sudden difficulty changing size. With nothing official to keep him from duty, he and the rest of the Avengers traveled to Chicago to help Vision stop Grim Reaper and the Maggia. Reaper escaped, but their data on Madame Masque led them to her base in the Nevada desert and right into a trap set by Count Nefaria. With Wonder Man and Atlas under his control Nefaria could not be beaten. The Avengers grabbed Masque and Reaper and fled to regroup.
Hawkeye and the Thunderbolts warned that Nefaria had created an ionic bomb to irradiate the entire world. Masque reluctantly helped to defend both teams from his influence using an ionic lock she'd developed years ago to resist him. Wonder Man and Atlas diffused his bomb's blast and Masque's weapons hurt him enough to force his power to leak out. After a long battle, Nefaria was finally defeated and Hank would begin working to restore Wonder Man and Atlas to their normal forms.
Magneto: Dark Seduction vol 1 #2-4
Afraid of what Magneto would accomplish if Genosha went unchecked, the U.N. sent the Avengers in to stop him. In response he destroyed a city to force them to focus their time on saving lives rather than fighting him. His goal had been to use the Genoshan mutate technology to restore his full powers, and the combined might of Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, and Polaris was not enough to keep him from it.
Maximum Security vol 1 #1-3, X-Men Unlimited vol 1 #29, Avengers vol 3 #35
The Intergalactic Council deemed humanity too dangerous, so they erected a barrier on the edges of our solar system to prevent any escape and flooded Earth with dangerous alien criminals. The Kree Supreme Intelligence had used the Forever Crystal to evolve his race and feigned service to the Shi'ar to conquer Earth by allowing a diminished version of Ego to assimilate the planet into his body. Once complete, the Kree would siphon the planet's energy as fuel for their armada. Earth's heroes were eventually able to defeat Ronan, restrain Ego, and inform the council of the truth.
Avengers vol 3 #36-40
3-D Man's wife accused the Triune Understanding of kidnapping him and giving his powers to Triathlon. As she explained, the Avengers were forced to divide their team to handle threats from Lord Templar and Bloodwraith. Yellowjacket captured Hank, who had been out at the time, and took his place as Goliath with the Avengers. After 6 weeks of restructuring their operations, the Avengers found themselves facing a Greek town where everyone had been turned into Hulks. "Goliath" suggested forcing them to merge together so that he could shrink the giant one down, but his plan was reckless and failed to work out when the big one smashed his field lab. As a backup plan, Bruce Banner was called in to absorb their gamma radiation and save everyone.
Minor/Cameo appearances from this period:
Warlock vol 5 #8
Deadpool vol 3 #44
Black Panther vol 2 #2
Hulk Annual 2000 vol 1 #1
Iron Fist/Wolverine vol 1 #2
Thunderbolts vol 1 #45, 47
The Sentry vol 1 #1, 4
Fantastic Four vol 3 #39
Infinity Abyss vol 1 #1
Iron Man vol 3 #37

The Black Lodge
The origins of the Black Lodge are somewhat mysterious. Most attribute the creation of the Black Lodge to the demon king Chernabog, also known as the Black Thing or the Dark One in his more incomprehensible forms. Chernabog is said to have created the Black Lodge as part of his effort to restore reality to its primal nonexistent state. He viewed the shadow of oblivion as superior to the light of existence and sought to roll it back. However, Chernabog also wished to punish those who ruined the ‘perfection’ of oblivion and thus made it so those legions that followed him in the Lodge proper would feed off of human misery and suffering. Of course, this is just one potential account of the origins of the Black Lodge. Nyarlathotep and his acolytes the Chaos Gods have also been accused of being behind the creation of the Black Lodge as a tool to further their ends. The existence of the counterpart the White Lodge has led to some to conclude that the Black Lodge simply exists to embody evil and came into being with the universe, along with the conceptions of good embodied by the White Lodge. People who believe this attribute the creation of the Lodges to a variety of figures—the Lord of Nightmares, the Black and White Guardians or the Forces of Law and Chaos being commonly attributed sources for them both.
Whatever the origin, the influence of the Black Lodge certainly is significant. The Black Lodge has drawn a number of followers in the material world to aid them in achieving their aims. The earliest known acolyte of the Black Lodge is the dark lord Morgoth, who terrorized Europe in the Hyborian Age. Morgoth was an immensely powerful figure and his acolyte Sauron likewise sought to spread the darkness of the Black Lodge before he was defeated by his enemies. While he was the first, he would be far from the last follower of the Black Lodge to terrorize the world. These figures could vary considerably in nature. The Order of Aurelius was formed by vampiric worshippers of the beings of the Black Lodge and sought to subjugate humanity to please them. The Black Lodge takes a major joy in corrupting people into vicious murderers-Leland Palmer, Michael Myers, Johann Liebert and Oh Sangwoo are but a fraction of those whom have, wittingly or unwittingly, been led to kill on behalf of the Lodge. A number of history’s evil magicians were acolytes of the Black Lodge as well, including Kulan Gath, Koschei the Deathless and according to some accounts Mordred. The dreaded Horned King, a widely feared necromancer, also is believed to have been a devotee of the Black Lodge. Many infamous dark magicians and evil witches have also been at least part-time devotees of the Black Lodge, including the Sanderson sisters, Amos Hacksaw and Pacha Camac. Their reach is not limited to Earth either, with their servants in the stars including the Shadow Galactica, the Sith and the Shadows.
The Black Lodge additionally sent residents of their realm to the world to corrupt it. The entity known as Pitch Black, for instance, was sent to corrupt the Shinto gods when they faced extinction at the hands of industrialization in Japan. The infamous Randall Flagg was long associated with various kinds of demons or even Nyarlathotep himself, but in fact is a servant of the Black Lodge sent to the Earth to terrorize the place. The species known as Minions are thought to have originated from the Black Lodge, though they took on a will of their own that has in more recent times drifted away from the goals of the Black Lodge. The shapeshifting spider known as Pennywise in its most notable incarnation is another servant dispatched to the mortal plane to carry out the Lodge’s bidding. Another species that is thought to have originated from within the Black Lodge are the Weeping Angels, a race of beings that feed off of futures that are aborted when they transport people to points in the past. The primary argument for their origins as servants of the Black Lodge is their feeding off of detrimental impacts they have and their otherwise mysterious nature. However, these claims have not been confirmed and may in fact be unable to be confirmed. The forces of the Black Lodge also are capable of feats of necromancy, with results ranging from the ghosts of the Overlook Hotel and the vengeful spirit of Elly Kenward to the serial killer Jason Voorhees and the reanimated Deadite hordes that have at times terrorized the world.
The inhabitants of the Black Lodge are to an extent surrounded in mystery in part owing to the apparent lack of clear temporal or dimensional boundaries for the Black Lodge and its inhabitants. Nonetheless some elements have been discerned. Within the Black Lodge are two powerful entities that may be the de facto rulers: the Scarlet (or Crimson) King and the King in Yellow. Both are generally malevolent, but at times war with each other for dominance within the Black Lodge. The Scarlet/Crimson King is associated with the color red and has a number of cults active on Earth. Many who encounter the Scarlet/Crimson King associate the Black Lodge with red rather than the typical black. The King in Yellow is not as flashy as the Scarlet/Crimson King, preferring to manipulate the world from the shadows rather than establish clear cults. Immediately below the Kings are the Lords in Black—5 entities claiming to be deities with powers over aspects of reality. Beneath the Lords are a number of demonic beings who can interact with the world via dreams and possession of humans. The being known as BOB is one of the most notorious of these beings, but others exist as well. The dream-walking serial killer Freddy Krueger is in fact a former prisoner of the Black Lodge who was granted powers after becoming a servant of theirs. Other examples of these inhabitants include the Obsidian Lord, Art the Clown, the Cenobites, the Babadook, the Violencia and the Voidbringers. The entity known as the End of the Cycle, responsible for bringing ruin on a galactic scale, has been alleged to be the joint creation of the Black Lodge’s two kings, though this remains unconfirmed.
The Black Lodge is not without opposition. Some of this opposition came from within the Lodge itself. The entity known as The Giant and the lone sister of the Lords of Black are two beings who originated with the Black Lodge and ended up defecting to the White Lodge. The White Lodge, ruled by Maturin the Space Turtle, is the main hub of opposition to the actions of the Black Lodge. The White Lodge operates in parallel to the Black Lodge in many respects, having its own chosen champions work to challenge the Black Lodge’s servants in their efforts to corrupt the world. These champi ms include Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who, and Mrs. Which, the Ellimist, the Skull Knight and Zordon all have worked to advance the White Lodge against the Black Lodge’s own chosen champions. They have enjoyed several triumphs over the years-most notably totally taking control of the afterlife realms dubbed ‘the Good Place’ and ‘the Bad Place’ by inhabitants the two lodges had nominally cooperated to form. World affairs have at times been driven by this conflict-in the First World War, the White Lodge’s followers on Earth under the leadership of Cyril Grey backed the Entente while the Black Lodge’s aligned dark magicians under Heinrich Kemmler supported the Central Powers. The propensity of the Black Lodge to challenge the laws of time mean they often run afoul of those seeking to maintain a clear and consistent timeline. The Time Lords were often opposed to the Black Lodge prior to the Time War and the Time Baby has also frequently warred with the Black Lodge as well. Not all dark entities are aligned with the Black Lodge either. The being known as the Slender Man has been known to fight with entities of a known origin in the Black Lodge, despite also being generally malevolent. The forces of Hell also tend not to take kindly to the Black Lodge and view it as a threat to their plans, much like the Great Old Ones. The would-be Antichrist Damien Thorn at one point sought to carry out a ritual to cut the Black Lodge off from Earth before being thwarted by the Black Lodge servitor Slappy, a particularly humiliating event for Thorn as Slappy was an animate ventriloquist dummy. The Black Lodge also often struggles with the beings known as the Ancient Ones, who have their followers carry out ritual sacrifice using similar forces as the Black Lodge, but seek entertainment above suffering. The Ancient Ones often help their followers bind Black Lodge-connected entities to follow their rituals, thus putting them at odds with the more sadistic Black Lodge.
