Review: Madballs vs Garbage Pail Kids #4
Oh, the 80s with the Ghostbusters, E.T., and LegWarmers. What an interesting time that was, especially with the unlikely fame of the Garbage Pail Kids. What started as a parody of the uber cute cabbage patch kids, the GPK were grotesque character cards created by the Topps Company. While increasingly disgusting, the art in those cards was filled to the brim with character and charm. They were…

REVIEW: Siren's Gate #2 (2022)
REVIEW: Siren’s Gate #2 (2022)
A Comic by Shannon Maer Partly because it’s insanely cold outside and I don’t have the will to brave the elements, and partly because I still need to read six books to reach my self-imposed Goodreads reading goal, I will be reading some comics this weekend and tossing some reviews up. We are starting this off with something that likely won’t too much buzz out there, but I promised I’d read a…

short story 💯
wrote a very quick story about a class i took in college. if you like my writing in my videos you may like this
Five years ago today I was clawing through state university. I had switched majors in an effort to come away with something more material from my college experience – but I was also trying to earn as many credits with as few courses to keep my schooling short and cheap.
I took a heavy weighted class in “media law.” A subject notoriously as intricate as it is absolutely fucking stupid. Anything you could learn, Disney will change tommorrow. The professor was an adjunct, splitting his time between the humble basement where boys with Pulp Fiction posters in their dorms fiddled with cameras and the actual law school where he was employed some miles down the road. I have never seen Pulp Fiction, but I’ve fiddled with enough cameras and enough of the boys who own them to have reviewed it twice. This is not a problem to me now.
Then I was stupid. Twenty. And basically friendless. I spent all my time trying to make something the same way the universe spent billions of years pouring hot soup into holes and hoping life would bubble out. I studied Japanese during quiet matches of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. I never got a win, and I never got an “A” in Japanese.
Weeks of school went by as I skimmed textbooks, got high, and thought about talking to literally anyone. Academic words danced around the edges of my brain like sand. I wrote essays on the same autopilot I write today. Feverish. Flowing. Fantasizing about what it would be like to go out with someone instead of texting a girl who now lived in Japan and making ramen noodles while listening for footsteps in a digital warzone.
I did all my work. I submitted it on something called “canvas” that the muscle memory in my fingers still types in search bars to this day. I never checked my grades. I knew they were bad.
Classes dragged me through the week on a bungee cord. I lived a block away from the bulk of them and found myself drifting in halls of buildings I’d never attended just to keep myself from meandering back home to draw a bad comic about a girl who lived in hell.
I knew nobody. I went nowhere. I struggled to do classwork alone on outdoor benches dreaming of someone speaking to me. I needed to live in hell instead.
My media law professor was late the weekend after our first term essays were due. I don’t know what mode of transportation he took to get from one school to the other but today the Carolina sun had drenched him sweaty. We were chilly waiting for him to begin.
“Just about every single one of you failed.” He spat and chugged coffee through the entire period. “While I first was grading I thought I was the one who failed.”
He didn’t let the moment of respite last. “But I also did something I’ve never done before.” He paced like my father did when a restaurant was closed early. “I gave out my first perfect score. Which prevents me from grading on a curve.”
He huffed, he assigned a new reading, and he rushed out like he had lit dynamite. “Do better!” “What an asshole.” The girl who sat next to me in every class spoke as if she had been holding her breath. “Fuck him and fuck whoever got that hundred.”
“I know right!” I launched in on her anger, feeling it too. Back and forth we complained. We walked off campus together. She had long blonde hair and towered over me. I had felt ugly and mousey next to her, but today I felt like her equal. It felt good to bitch.
“I got a fucking 50. What about you?”
“It wasn’t pretty.” I recalled how I stayed up the night before the assignment was due. I milked bullshit into a puree. I got a rush of adrenaline from killing someone with a shotgun through a door in an abandoned house on the outskirts of Pochinki. I was probably close to being expelled. “This class is too fucking hard,” she smoked and shook her head by a bus stop on Tate Street. “I’m not about to lose my freetime over it.”
“Right.” I imagined her at parties. Black silhouettes against colored lights and deafening music. Like The Social Network. “We should be partners for the next assignment,” she got out her phone and passed it to me for my number. I typed it in. I waved her off on the bus. We did the assignment together. We texted each other about our studies. We joked about finding the guy who got the perfect score and beating him senseless. I thought about talking to her about my art or what we were making in other classes, but never did.
Towards the end of the semester I had to plan the next. A whirlpool churned in my stomach as I clicked on “grades” on my campus’ online portal. I had an A+ in a single course.
Media Law.
My friend from class texted me that she was dreading the final. I texted her that if we failed I would kill Mr. Perfect Score. She texted “lol.”
She passed the course. I got my degree so I assume I did too. We stopped texting.
That professor emailed me asking me to take a course at the law school down the road. He said he would let me sit in and see if I wanted to change majors a third time. I never replied.
A law degree would just make Mr. Perfect Score a hundred times more punchable.

Breaking down the comics: Committee of Three (Issue #4)
Moon Knight, Issue #4: A Committee of 5
Written by Doug Moench and drawn by Bill Sienkiewicz
Tumblr media
I’m back! Took a little break to get caught up on some more modern Moon Knight and now I’m ready to jump back into the past!
Now this is an interesting one because “The Committee” was the original group of people that first hired Moon Knight to hunt down Jack Russell (Werewolf by Night). But back then, he and Jack took down the Committee. What could they possibly want with Moon Knight now? Let’s find out!
"Life is seldom easy for the mysterious man called Moon Knight--And it's about to get a whole lot harder! Five seasoned hit-men are out for his blood! They are a committee of:
One: Boom-Boom, explosives expert.
Two: Razor, blade freak.
Three: Ice. Sniper assassin.
Four: Dragon, karate black belt.
and Five: Bull, just plain animal!
All five are professional killers--and they enjoy their work. So it's rather simple really, either they're put out of business--fast--or the shadows will soon run red and echo with ghastly laughter."
I feel like Moon Knight faced a lot of professional assassins in the early runs. The one with them in the snow, then the one with him in Israel...
Also, LOOK AT THIS ART! I love this! Look how they put the words in his cape!
Tumblr media
Also LOL.
We see Moon Knight landing awkwardly next to Rockefeller ice rink while a sniper lines up a shot. He takes aim and fires and we see Moon Knight fall!
He runs down to the rink to check the body. He needs proof of the kill for his bosses. But there is no body!
Moon Knight drops down behind him.
"Still alive--If you believe I have nothing worse than a bullet-hole through my cape... Or still dead--If you prefer to believe that I really AM a ghost. Take your pick, Annie Oakley."
I miss the days when Moon Knight really had a hard time convincing himself that he was alive. He played up the ghost angle so much.
He charges the gunman only to have the gun go off in his face, blinding him! Good job.
The sniper takes the opportunity to smash him in the head with the butt of his rifle. ....Moon Knight sure did take a lot of blows to the head in his early years.
Lucky for him, the gunman is still rattled by the whole ghost thing and flees in a panic, rather than finishing him off.
Recovering, Moon Knight wonders how long the assassin has been stalking him and who sent him.
On the other side of town, The Committee meets to get an update on Moon Knight's status.
Ice, the gunman, tells them that he had him but he's some sort of "spook"!
Ah! It IS the same Committee that hired him to hunt Jack Russel back in his first appearance of Werewolf by Night!!!
One of the guys was apparently on vacation and missed the memos so he asks who they're going after and why.
I love a good excuse for exposition.
"These five gentlemen have been retained to dispose of our personal Frankenstein monster. You DO recall our creation--Moon Knight-- Don't you? He nearly destroyed the original Committee. Now that we've reorganized, we owe it to the committee's honor to settle the score."
The assassins review their plans.
The dynamite guy, Boom-Boom, plans to blow up Moon Kight's vehicle. (Not the cab! Or maybe the Chopper?!) The rest just want to get up and personal.
The guy that was on vacation takes a minute to ask if going after Moon Knight is actually a good idea or not. You know... considering...
The other guy is angry at Moon Knight for taking their money and not delivering the wolf. Also because he turned on them and pretty much nearly wiped them out.
This is just a petty revenge mission.
Back at Grant Mansion!
We find Marlene working out and Moon Knight changing out.
"Well, aren't you the bundle of joy this morning, Mr. Grant? Or is it Mr. Lockley? Spector? Moon Knight--?" She takes playful jabs at him. It's...It's early in the comics so I'm not going to harp on this. Early enough where he himself really doesn't know what's going on and the others are still just him pretending to be someone else.
"Every identity has its place, Marlene, and every identity IN its place. We're in Grant Mansion--Ergo, I've just become Steven Grant." He's a bit snappy about it. He's still trying to compartmentalize and in deep denial.
"Okay, Steven. Bad night?"
"Routine. Seen Frenchie around?"
Frenchie has a place in the committee so he can keep track of their movements. This dates back to WBN.
Frenchie tells him that they've reorganized but he hasn't attended enough meetings since to know what's going on. But he has a feeling that something is going on behind closed doors.
Steven tells him that someone tried to knock off Moon Knight and they weren't an amateur.
The Committee predates Marlene. Or at least they never brought it up to her.
She asks just who these guys are that want him dead so badly.
Frenchie answers for them. "Several years back, Marlene, I learned of a group of international financiers...So I told Marc and we decided to investigate... posing as a French industrialist, I infiltrated them... I told them of a mercenary named Marc Spector who might take zee job, were he provided with anonymity and suitable weapons."
Marc approved the plan and they went back to the committee to introduce Moon Knight, who up to that point hadn't been a household name. Only Bushman had delt with the Moon Knight.
They detail about their efforts fighting the wolf.
"At first it seemed like killing two birds with one stone--Getting to zee bottom of zee committee's crimes while ridding zee world of a monster. But when he saw zee tortured humanity of a young man named Jack Russell locked behind zee horror, he freed zee werewolf and together they destroyed zee committee. This was before Marc became rich as Steven Grant, so he took zee committee's money--ANd left zee werewolf go free to find his own fate."
REALLY?! THAT'S where they got the money from!? What happened to all their money made as mercs? Did they blow it? No wonder Steven's so pissy all the time. He's worked his ass off to make their millions and Marc is just out there blowing through it.
The next day, Jake hits the streets to see if Crawley has any tips.
He does his usual 'gmorning to Gena and asks about her boys.
Then he immediately sides up to Crawley: "Any hitmen in town Crawley?"
Apparently there are five and they all hit the same nightclub in Queens. That's convenient.
He hires Gena's boys to find out the names of all the assassins and if they'll be back at the club.
He loves those kids.
He calls up Marlene and tells her to have Frenchie attend the next committee meeting. He also tells her to "practice your bump and grind, Lady."
Jake's got a way with words.
Oh no. OH NO. I know what issue this is.
The...The night club... It's an airplane. They have a theme.
Gena's sons go to the club to get info.
At the committee meeting, Frenchie busts in pretending to be pissed off not to be included in the previous sessions.
"We were concerned that you might object."
"Why shold I care? I knew zee mercenary Spector, oui, but he was hardly a FRIEND."
Up on the roof, Moon Knight listens in on the meeting as they inform Frenchie of the details.
In the club, the boys get into a bit of trouble but their manage to not only get out of it, but to also get the info they need.
Outside, Marlene is applying for a job in the club.
Yeah... It's...It's this issue.
The meeting over, Moon Knight switches to Lockley to get the info from Gena's boys.
A lot is about to happen here folks. Just…Just get ready for this.
Tumblr media
(early Moon Knight tumblr fandom… If you know you know.)
Here we see Moon Knight startled by some firecrackers. He knows it’s a trap. But we see a cat sniffing at a box while Boom Boom waits.
IN A RARE EVENT. Moon Knight is not left fighting a random animal, but being saved by and saving that animal.
Tumblr media
Boom Boom makes a run for it and Moon Knight stops another dynamite stick from going off with some sharp Crescent dart action! But Boom Boom manages to give him the slip and get away.
Tumblr media
He takes defeat so gracefully.
So next day he heads out as Jake again.
He patrols the streets in his cab looking for news.
I just... I love Jake.
We see Jake come into the mansion to see Marlene heading out to her new job at the club.
Dealing with Marlene, he's instantly Steven. Then the phone rings and it's one of Jake's contacts so he's Jake again. That pose is 100% Jake.
Early issue we see them just cycle through easy peasy but still acting like it's pretend. But it's SO obvious when it's with Marlene. Jake really has no interest in Marlene as anything more than the lady his headmates care about.
It’s something I’ll contend with over and over again. Especially as the much later comics decide that Jake was really the one dating Marlene… But that’s an argument for another day.
Tumblr media
We head over to the Madison Square Garden where Marc and Frenchie attend a boxing match.
They spot some that look like they might be the other assassins and move to follow them. Steven heads to the bathroom to change.
Tumblr media
There's so much going on here that I love so much.
Steven changes in the bathroom. So a tuxedo man walks into the public bathroom... Probably in a stall... ANd changes into Moon Knight...
He left his tux in the bathroom. Probably on the floor or in the trash?
The jab that Grant can afford it. Poor Steven.
The champion boxer being like "Oh man. That's one fast cat. I don't want to tango with that dude."
Also him asking "Wonder if he's got any color under that white mask..." Implying that Moon Knight's so cool that he hopes he's a black man. Which I can respect. He’s got some style.
Then we have Moon Knight jumping into a typical rich person car to tail a cab.
I miss these simple Moon Knight days…
In the next panel we find that he didn't even ride IN the car, but hung onto the side as Frenchie drove.
"Twenty minutes later, North of central park, Moon Knight vaults from the Limo's running board..."
Moon Knight knows that this is another trap. It's a dark and abandoned building.
Yup. As soon as he's inside, he's ambushed by Dragon, the karate guy and the knife guy.
Karate guy pulls out his nunchak. Moon Knight also turns his truncheon into nunchak.
It's the first time we see Moon Knight's new weapon and it remains in the comics for a very long time after this. I love seeing his weapons advance in the comics!
He takes out the knife guy quick then turns to the Dragon.
He comes at Moon Knight, who doges each attack then lands a blow, taking out the blackbelt.
Which is hilarious because he's just a blackbelt in karate. We know at this point that Marc Spector had to learn a lot of different fighting styles in the Special Forces, not to mention his early street Boxing days as a young man. A simple black belt really has nothing on him.
Two down, he gets clocked in the back of the head by the Bull.
Moon Knight lands a few hits but he's still dizzy from the blow to his head. (again with the head).
Frenchie rushes in with a gun and scares off the Bull, who busts through a wall and dissapears.
"I'm getting just a little sick of this, Frenchie--That guy hits like a truck. Why didn't you stay with the limo?"
"I got Board, Marc."
I love Frenchie...
"Now there's a refreshing complaint...But taking there two to the mansion for safekeeping--Blindfolded--Oughtta keep you busy. Then get over to tonight's meeting of the committee."
Back at the club, Marlene has made it in with the head guy of the assassins, Ice, pulling her charms.
Sitting down for a private drink, they are interrupted by a phone call. It's from Bull!
Seems Bull and Boom Boom have decided Moon Knight is more than they really want to deal with.
"We're quittin'. Gonna put the squeeze on the committee instead--easier to just take the money than earn it by tacklin' Moon Knight again. You shoulda seen the way he took out Razor and Dragon!
He's too much, Ice! He's got helpers everywhere--They found Eddie tied up in the back room of Inn Flight--Coupla kids took his gun! They'll pick us off one by one! He's got spies everywhere I tell ya!"
Whoopse. Ice takes note of Marlene who is still sitting right there.
Ice tells them to do what they want. He's still got a job to do.
He tells Marlene he's got a meeting to get to, but she should stay there and wait for him.
Marlene quickly leaves to a payphone (despite a phone being right there in the office. But I guess.) She calls Jake's cab phone to tell him what she just heard.
Ice was waiting and watching the phone. He now knows Marlene is one of the spies.
Back at the main office, Boom Boom and Bull make their play against the committee by rigging the whole building to explode!
Outside, we see Ice climbing the outside of the building next to the warehouse to claim the money for himself!
On the otherside, Moon Knight starts to scale the building itself!
Boom Boom and Bull snag the money and move to make a run for it, but Ice has padlocked the exits! The building is set to explode in five minutes!
Moon Knight figures it out and notes that Frenchie is also trapped inside!
Ice makes it to the roof on the other building and spots Moon Knight on the roof, putting him back in his crosshairs.
Bull manages to bust through the door like before, but Frenchie is still deep inside the building.
Just as Ice takes his shot, the building explodes and collapses, sending the bullet right over Moon Knight's head as he falls with the building.
Tumblr media
Gotta love that glider cape. Also gotta love Frenchie’s smarts.
Moon Knight makes a break for Bull.
As he runs, Ice opens fire again.
Moon Knight dives through the bullets, still after Bull.
Yeah he...He takes another blow to the head, knocking him to the floor of the little motor boat.
Moon Knight rolls, trying to knock Bull over. Unfortunately, this puts Bull right into Ice's bullets and he takes one to the chest.
The boat crashes, sending Moon Knight flying. He's having a good night.
Laing stunned on the dock, he's back in the crosshairs. Just before Ice can take his shot....
Marlene kicks the gun away!
And we see Moon Knight again, a sad wet cat crawling on the ground. He does this a lot.
Tumblr media
"Like a ragged creature escaped from hell, he stands on the roof, the precious rifle clenched in granite hands..."
Moon Knight snaps the riffle in two over his knee. Then he knocks Ice out.
The cops later find all the remaining assassins on their door steps with a note "Night deposit" nailed to the door with a crescent dart.
He's got class.
Back at the mansion, Grand invites everyone over for a feast.
Which is funny considering that it's not till a later episode that he reveals himself as Jake and Steven and Marc and Moon Knight and that he's rich. But who's keeping track of continuity?
Grant reveals all the money that was supposed to go to the assassins from the committee. He divides it up among the friends, with a good amount going to charities.
I love this issue. It’s fun, it’s quirky, it’s an early issue that is still trying to establish who everyone is and how the dynamic functions, and you have a LOT of Moon Knight getting hit in the head or having the bad guys get away with him getting frustrated over it.
It’s got so much character! And maybe this is just me coming off of reading…the worst issues ever (Bemis, Aaron, Bendis)... But this was much needed. Really refreshing. Even the art style is so clean and just full of everything I love about Moon Knight.

Luke Arnold, Doc Wyatt talk the teamwork and insanity that defines ‘ESSENTIALS’
The compelling new OGN is funding via Kickstarter.
by Chris Coplan (April 18, 2024)
You may know Luke Arnold as Long John Silver in the Black Sails and/or INXS’ own Michael Hutchence in the Never Tear Us Apart miniseries. Doc Wyatt, meanwhile, is best known for his production work on the iconic Napoleon Dynamite and the animated Rocket and Groot for Marvel. So, what happens when a lauded actor and a TV writer/producer get together? Why a brand-new graphic novel, ESSENTIALS.
For ESSENTIALS, Arnold and Wyatt were brought together in part by The Lab Press, a new publishing outfit that focuses primarily on graphic novels. Together, the pair then collaborated with a veritable smorgasbord of comics artists, including Bill Sienkiewicz (who does the cover), Dani, Jason Howard, Andrea Mutti, and Glenn Fabry. (The book’s colors were provided by Jordie Bellaire, Brad Simpson, and Wesley Wong, with lettering from DC Hopkins of AndWorld Design).
Once fully assembled, this superstar team behind ESSENTIALS set about crafting a story in which “the world you see around you is not real.” More specifically, we follow “disgraced mathematician Harris Pax” as he and Buttons (an “interdimensional being possessing his niece’s favorite toy”) set about smashing the walls of this faux reality. ESSENTIALS asks some big questions — “What matters most in a well-lived life? Is joy more valuable than truth?” — just as much as it’s a rollicking, dimension-hopping adventure story.
ESSENTIALS is currently crowdfunding via Kickstarter, with the campaign having raised $13,000-plus (of a seemingly $1,111 goal) on the way to its May 16 deadline. (Head here to contribute.) To get a better idea of the work that went into ESSENTIALS, we recently got to field questions to both Arnold and Wyatt. The duo spoke about the somewhat involved creative process, the big themes at the book’s heart, working with The Lab Press, and much more.

AIPT: I’m curious: what’s the collaborative process look like between a TV writer and an actor making a comic book?
Luke Arnold: It’s hard to summarize this process because there are so many stages. We broke most of the story on zoom between Australia and LA. Then, we outlined in pieces, trading them back and forth multiple times, rewriting and recrafting until we were happy. After that, we’d take a chapter each, write them, share them, editing and/or rewriting each other’s work. Then, it would go to the artists, and we’d wait for the first sketches to roll in.
Because the team (Doc, myself, and everyone at The Lab) is spread around the globe, we found that the best place to review artwork was actually in VR. We all got Oculus headsets that allowed us to sit around a table together with the art displayed on a huge board in front of us, marveling over the work and deciding on any notes to send back to the artists.
The next few stages would take place over email, and then when all the art was finished, Doc and I would get back on Zoom to take another look at the script. Once you have those final pages, you can quickly realize that a lot of dialogue feels unnecessary, so we’d go through and make changes before sending everything to the letterer. That was one of my favorite stages, as you have an opportunity to write some parts all over again, inspired by the work of the artists.
Doc Wyatt: Luke’s an actor, but he’s also a novelist. His novels blow me away. I knew Luke first as an actor, and on set, he was talking about these fantasy novels that he wanted to write. But when it actually happened, I was blown away. The Last Smile in Sunder City was Luke’s first book, and it kicked off a series that’s a mashup of the noir detective genre with urban fantasy. Anyone who’s missed it should catch up with it.
As a writer, Luke is intricate. He works in levels and layers, meanings behind meanings, and philosophical underpinnings. It was a really rich and rewarding experience because we’d start out talking about the story we were breaking, but the conversation would drift into all these other, unrelated places… until suddenly it would snap back into story mode, but bringing along all these influences from our seemingly unrelated conversations.
AIPT: What’s the elevator pitch for ESSENTIALS? It seems like there are a lot of big questions churning at the heart of this book.
LA: Our world has collided with another dimension and reality has become untethered. Most humans were killed in the collision, and those that survived are now trapped in their own subjective realities as their beliefs, thoughts, and fears become manifest around them. Harris Pax – the only scientist who foresaw this apocalypse and managed to protect himself – has teamed up with Buttons – a being from the other dimension. Together they must travel into these subjective realities and convince the people inside to give up their illusions and return to the real world.
DW: Honestly, it can sound complicated, but at the end of the day the story is pretty simple. A cosmic catastrophe has killed most human life, with the few survivors unknowingly stuck in their own bubbles of subjective reality. It’s the job of our heroes to pull them out of these private realities before they’re killed by them.
AIPT: Similarly, it seems like this book may be about/interested in simulations and subjective reality and the like. Why are those kinds of massive ideas interesting, and how do you come at them from a new angle?
LA: It’s a cliché now to say that we’ve never been so divided. We started writing this four years ago, and things seem to have only gotten worse. In this age of reactionary politics and algorithms, we really are starting to live in separate realities where even basic facts are up for dispute. But this feeling of disconnection was an existential issue long before the internet. Artists and writers have always explored the pain of isolation, our yearning for interconnection, and the despondency that comes from witnessing the perpetual division of the human race on both an intimate and planetary scale. With ESSENTIALS, we found two heroes, a villain, and a reality-spanning quest that allows us to dig into these concerns in a way that feels fresh and kind of limitless. There are already so many realities we’ve had to cast aside and many more we hope to include as the story continues.

AIPT: What’s it like to be the debut release from Lab Press? Does that pressure help or complicate your process as creators and then also promoters of said creation?
LA: I can really only speak to it from a creative standpoint. It has awarded us a kind of freedom that is rare to find. The Lab and ESSENTIALS were formed at the same time, so the publishers had no preconceptions about what this book needed to be. There were no expectations, either from the reader or the company itself, so the book was able to find its form on its own terms. And being their debut, The Lab was likely more open to our wild ideas, such as jumping between so many artists in the way we do.
DW: For me, sure– it’s a little nerve-wracking to be the first book from a new publisher, because they’re going to be doing all their learning on our book. But that said, we believe in them. They’ve certainly taken a risk on our weird, little, indie book, so it’s only fair we take a risk on them!
AIPT: The book has a slew of talented artists attached, including Dani, Andrea Mutti, and Bill Sienkiewicz. What’s it mean to have such a roster of sheer artistic talent, and do you have any standout moments/pages?
LA: Even though this book has been in development for years, from the artists signing on to sending their pencils, their inks and colors, and now holding the final version, I still can’t really comprehend that we were able to work with artists of this caliber.
This is the first comic I’ve written, and so I was still wondering how all our scripts would come out after being interpreted by the artist. There’s a sequence in chapter two with a collage of a conversation that passes through a bunch of scenarios across a double page spread, and when Jason Howard sent us his pencils of that section, I started to believe that this world Doc and I had dreamed up could actually be realized.
I also have to say that I’m a huge Glenn Fabry fan. We gave him some of our weirdest pages, and his beautifully textured detail is everything we hoped for and more.
DW: The Lab Press had us submit a list of dream artists we’d be dying to work with. We did, thinking–well, they’ll never be able to get these… But they did!!! They didn’t tell me that they’d gotten Bill Sienkiewicz for a cover, who has been a very important artist to me since childhood. Instead they just revealed to me the fully finished cover at a party at New York Comic Con as a big surprise, and I just about lost it. It’s such an amazing cover. And it’s so Bill while still being so ESSENTIALS!
AIPT: Do you have a fave sci-fi book/film/show/etc. that maybe made its way into this project in some way (intentionally or not)?
LA: Doc is a font of sci-fi knowledge, and our original scripts were stuffed full of amazing references. Eventually, we decided to remove most of them before sending the scripts to artists because we didn’t want to cloud their minds with other visuals before we could see what their imaginations offered up. On quick flip though, you could see references to Alien, The Blob, and Night of the Living Dead, but we’ve done our best to use that imagery as a starting block to build something weirder.
AIPT: Why should anyone support the forthcoming Kickstarter for ESSENTIALS?
LA: Because this book is done and it’s incredible. We’re teaming up with Kickstarter because it’s the best way to get the books out to everyone around the world. We’re not asking for support to get it finished or anything like that. Not long after we launch, the book will be out of the printers and in your hands.
DW: We love our weird little story, and we want to tell more of it in the future, but we’ll only get the chance to do that if people read and love this one. We want to get the word out any way we can, so backers will find and support and read the book. It’s strange, it’s heady, and it’s not for everyone, but the people who it’s for– we hope– will really love it!
