I have redubbed Dark Souls Remastered “The Jam Game.” …let me explain.
I do not play Dark Souls (not really my game play style) but for some reason I love the Gaping Dragon aka Nugget the Nomnovore, my child. My absolute wonderful fiancé is currently playing through Dark Souls, so I can watch my favorite toothy nonsense and also be introduced to other eldritch abominations who will no doubt be added to my pantheon of nightmare children. It’s great - we started last night.
I know nothing about Dark Souls aside from my toothy child, so there were a lot of conversations like this:
Me: All the zombos. Wait, you’re a zombo?!
Fiancé: Yup.
Me: So are there any humans left or is this, like, full on zombie apocalypse?
Fiancé: (considering) You can collect enough humanity to look human again, but there aren’t really any humans.
Me: So what’s the point of looking human?
Fiancé: It’s been a really long time since I last played, but I think it gives you a stat boost….
Now normally, I cannot handle gore, and Dark Souls got its rating for a reason, but the blood effects were just so over the top that I was cackling. And for reasons best known only to my tired brain, I turned to my fiancé and declared, “The zombos are full of jam! Strawberry jam because raspberry is overdone.” Aaaaaand I spent the rest of the evening shouting things like, “Strawberry flavored zombos!” and “Release the jam - tonight we make toast!”
Needless to say, I’m glad he was already aware of what a horrible little ghoulish goblin he was planning on marrying before this.

Better pictures of what @fullbattleregalia has dubbed the 'Slugnavore,' aka the slug version of the Gaping Dragon from Dark Souls, which she refers to as 'Nugget the Nomnivore.'
Made because I don't have the spoons to finish the actual gaping dragon plushie I promised her right now, but she also really likes slugs and this is one of her aesthetics and I am a filthy enabler.
Anyway, got the base pattern here if you want to make a slug or mod the pattern to create your own slug-based abominations.

finished painting that steamforged gaping dragon miniature. tho it feels weird to call her a “miniature” considering that she’s a pretty sizey lass. didn’t try to match her exact in-game colours and just have a bit of fun. mainly just painted her up with ‘alligator’ colours in mind, since she’s basically just the fantasy version of a sewer alligator. took her off the base to paint her belly and feet easier and then just decided to leave her off it, cutting the pegs off her feet. think she looks nicer off it anyway.

When you accidentally see a clip of a Dark Souls monster on TikTok, the response should probably be “The horror!” not “Adorable baby made of teeth! I must hug!”
Anyway, I’m very disappointed to report that they don’t make any plush of the toothy nonsense that is “Nugget the Nomnovore,” aka the Gaping Dragon. I’m quite put out.

The best interpretation of the Gaping Dragon is forbidden
Being composed of a vertical slit with a fleshy little nubbin situated right at the top, the Gaping Dragon is one of those designs that is just BEGGING for a yonic interpretation, but since I don't want to get in trouble with community guidelines I'll let you google that one yourself. Instead we'll focus less on the "gaping" and more on the "dragon" - because as we learn in the extensive mythology lesson of Dark Souls' intro, the world once belonged to the dragons. Towering beings protected by stone scales that granted them immortality, these were the kings of creation until Gwyn usurped them for his Age of Fire.
Here in the Depths we get to see the result of that overthrow. The Gaping Dragon is emaciated and thin, a literal bottom feeder eating the scum that drifts down the Undead Burg's fetid sewer system. With half of its body taken up by a consuming maw, what you get from its design more than anything is a sense of abject deprivation and absolute desperation to feed, to sustain itself, merely to persist in a world that has become fundamentally hostile to its existence. This is the fate of dragons in the Age of Fire, naked without their stone scales, and the fear of that fate might give us some context for the behaviour of the other dragon we will face in this game.

RACHEL RANKS: DARK SOULS TRILOGY BOSSES FROM WORST TO BEST
Tumblr media
#47: Gaping Dragon (Dark Souls)
“A distant, deformed descendant of the everlasting dragons.”
First of all, gross. Second of all, cool! Third of all, GROSS! This massive mouthy motherfucker really pushes the limit of how far Dark Souls can go visually without turning into pure schlocky gore, and I kinda love it for that. I might even be able to love it as a boss if not for the terrible arena and actively cruel camera (plus that fucking pineapple boy taking potshots at you if you’re not aware he’s there) getting in the way. The charge across the arena, the spit attack that clips through the floor, etc. all hamper the flow and enjoyment of the fight. But despite all that, the unique WOW factor (plus that amazing opening cutscene) almost makes going through the depths to reach it worthwhile! ALMOST.
