Dragon Ball Super Manga ch.97-99
Tumblr media
Cell Max is running wild, but don't worry, because Goten and Trunks are here to pad the story give Piccolo and Gohan a breather.
Tumblr media
To be fair, the boys do a little better once they turn Super Saiyan, which kind of begs the question of why they didn't just turn Super Saiyan from the start. This page's sole purpose is to have the Gammas notice their "resemblance" to Saiyaman X-1 and X-2. This would be annoying enough even if they did look alike, but they don't. Look at them! Trunks and Goten have tights and some sort of Stormtrooper midriff thing going on. The Gammas are wearing jodhpurs and bellhop jackets. And Goten and Trunks' color schemes are clearly reversed from one to the other. The Gammas match perfectly except for their red and blue capes.
The only real similarities here are the numbers on their costumes, and the fact that there are two of them. Oh, and Gamma 1 has a red cape, and Goten has a red cape. Eerie! What are the odds of two superheroes having red capes? You almost never see that. I mean, there's Superman, Thor, Great Saiyaman, Dr. Strange, Spawn, Great Saiyaman 2, the Scarlet Witch, Supergirl, Great Saiyaman 3, Power Girl, Steel, but other than those characters, I can't think of anyone else!
Tumblr media
Then they all pose together and attack Cell Max in concert. It looks impressive, but their quadruple-team fails to do any damage. The Gammas acknowledge that Cell Max is still getting used to moving around in his body, so he's not fighting as effectively as he will be later in the story. So that's why Goten and Trunks can do this well without actually hurting their opponent. And that's fair.
What doesn't make a lot of sense is the Gammas' role in this part of the battle. Of everyone involved in this battle, they alone understand the danger Cell Max poses to the world, because Dr. Hedo told them about Max's powers. That's why they went in first when Cell Max first emerged. They knew they had to shut him down as quickly as possible. And they're not rusty like Goten and Trunks, or unfamiliar with their bodies like Cell Max. If there's a window of opportunity here for Goten and Trunks to fight Cell Max without looking outclassed, then you'd think the Gammas would use this chance to target Max's head and finish him off.
Of course, they can't actually do that, since that's not what happened in the movie, but that's the problem I have with all of this. Toyotaro keeps shoehorning Goten and Trunks into this story, and their scenes tend to interfere with the plot instead of adding to it. The Gammas have a cool gimmick and aesthetic with the super hero thing. It works. They don't need two more characters aping that look right beside them. At best it's redundant, and at worst it just cramps their style. It'd be like if Frieza had a teen sidekick following him around repeating everything he says. It would kill his whole vibe.
Tumblr media
Okay, so once Goten and Trunks fuse into Gotenks, the battle plays out mostly like it did in the movie, but there's one part that got changed up and it caused some controversy in the fandom. Remember how Pan almost got killed, and Krillin called out to her and told her to fly, and then she managed to fly for the first time?
So in the manga, Pan has the same moment, except she doesn't take flight. Instead...
Tumblr media
In this version, Krillin just flies over and grabs her. And that makes sense. Why would he just assume she can fly on her own? Why not just zip over and get her? However, this kills the character arc Pan had in the movie. She started the film wishing she could do more advanced training, but Piccolo won't let her because she can't fly yet. Then in this scene, she does fly, and when the movie ends she shows Piccolo and he proudly agrees to start giving her the advanced lessons.
Fans didn't like this version, because Toyotaro appeared to be saying "no" to something the fans enjoyed in the movie. Krillin doesn't need a hero moment in this scene because he gets a couple of hero moments when he helps fight Cell Max. He saves 18 and distracts Cell Max with a solar flare. Krillin's fine. So it sure looks like Toyotaro just scrapped Pan's big moment for no discernible reason. This happened in Chapter 97.
Tumblr media
Hey, check out this cool shot of Orange Piccolo fighting Cell Max.
Tumblr media
Right, back to what I was saying.
So in Chapter 98, Toyotaro redeems himself by having Pan fly for the first time, just in a later part of the battle. When Big Orange Piccolo gives the last senzu bean to Gohan in the movie, Gohan just eats it and that's it. But in the manga, Cell Max attacks Piccolo and knocks it out of his hand. No one can catch it, until Pan goes after it and follows it over a ledge. Gohan's worried, but then it turns out she can fly now so she was never in danger, and she gets to help him this way.
Is it better than the movie? I can see a case for this version, but one thing that bugs me is that it seems a bit contrived for Pan to notice the senzu bean and be able to follow it through the air the way she did. I believe she could and would catch it for her dad. That's fine. But I'm not sure she would understand the need from where she was sitting in Bulma's aircraft.
For that matter, I don't know that it makes sense for Pan to understand what a senzu bean is, or why Gohan would need one so badly. Someone might have explained it to her at some point, but Pan's only three years old. I wouldn't expect her to know everything about everything.
Anyway, it goes to show how much can change from one chapter to another. People were mad about Chapter 97, but only because they didn't have 98 right there in front of them to show them it wasn't that big a deal. This is one major reason why I don't like to read the manga as it publishes.
Tumblr media
From here, well, I think I'm just down to cool shots of the fight with Cell Max.
Tumblr media
I don't think much is different here, but the art is cool, and this is one of my favorite parts of the movie.
Tumblr media
I think this is a manga-only bit. Cell Max works over Piccolo with ki blasts, and it looks like Piccolo blows up, which triggers Gohan's Beast form, but then later it turns out Gamma 1 was protecting Piccolo with his force field, which allowed him to withstand the blast.
Tumblr media
Also, when Cell Max tries to use his wings to escape the attack Gohan has planned, Toyotaro has Gamma 1, Krillin, and 18 cut off his wings. Not sure we needed this, but sure, it gives those characters one more chance to shine.
Tumblr media
And then Piccolo holds Cell Max down and pleads with Gohan to take the shot, and that's the end of chapter 99.
And that gets me all caught up. Now I just have to wait for Chapter 100, which is supposed to drop on December 20. Hopefully, it'll wrap up the Super Hero adaptation, but I wouldn't put it past Toyotaro to drag this thing out another three chapters with some sort of press conference featuring Sergeant Nutz, Saiyaman X-1 and X-2, and Cleangod.
There's been talk of a big surprise twist or something in chapter 100, but I'm not holding my breath. Usually when this franchise has a big announcement, it's about the date for some actual announcement later, and that announcement usually turns out to be something the fans kind of already heard about anyway. "Yes, we will be releasing a Chapter 101" is the sort of thing I would expect them to "announce" in chapter 100.
It would be cool if Chapter 100 ended with Black Frieza showing up and killing Vegeta or something major like that. Or, I don't know, maybe Goten and Trunks turn evil. Those would be shocking developments, but I doubt this manga would go that far. We'll just have to see...

Investigating the contribution of gamma-ray blazar flares to neutrino flux
Blazars belong to the family of active galactic nuclei called quasars. What differentiates them from quasars is that the flares ejected out of these active galactic nuclei are pointed toward the Earth. These flares contain high-energy cosmic rays which are released from the core of these galaxies as jets spanning many light years. Such cosmic rays can interact with photons to produce subatomic particles called neutrinos.
Gamma-ray flares from blazars are thought to be the primary events behind neutrino detection in the sky. In 2017, the South Pole neutrino detector “IceCube” detected a high-energy neutrino event whose timings and positioning in the night sky coincided with the flare of a blazar called TXS 0506+056. Some scientists suggest that there could be a population of blazars whose flares are accompanied by high-energy neutrino emission. However, the relationship between blazar flaring activity and neutrino flux is yet to be properly understood.
In this regard, an international research team, led by Professor Kenji Yoshida from the Department of Electronic Information Systems at Shibaura Institute of Technology, Japan, has recently performed a comprehensive statistical analysis to understand the contribution of gamma-ray flares to neutrino emission. The team included Maria Petropoulou from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Kohta Murase from The Pennsylvania State University, and Foteini Oikonomou from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. Their paper was published in Volume 954, Number 2 of The Astrophysical Journal on September 6, 2023.
The researchers analyzed 145 blazars, 144 of them taken from the Fermi Large Area Telescope Monitored Source List and including TXS 0506+056, in this study. They first calculated a weekly average of the gamma-ray flux of the blazars and plotted their light curves. The team then derived the flare duty cycle (fraction of time spent in flaring state) and the corresponding energy fraction from these curves using a Bayesian blocks algorithm, a statistical method used to identify changes in a time series.
“We find that blazars with lower flare duty cycles and energy fractions are more numerous among our sample. Their flare duty cycles and energy fractions represent power law-like distributions, correlating strongly with each other. We found a significant difference between blazar subclasses for the flare duty cycles at the 5% significant level,” says Prof. Yoshida, highlighting the major results of their analysis.
The researchers evaluated the neutrino energy flux of each gamma-ray flare, using a general scaling relation for the neutrino and gamma-ray luminosities with a power law’s weighting exponent of 1.0–2.0, normalized to the quiescent gamma-ray or X-ray flux of each blazar. They also found that the gamma-ray flare distribution indicates that blazar neutrino emission may be dominated by flares for the weighting exponent >1.5. Furthermore, by comparing their neutrino predictions for each blazar for one-week and 10-year periods to the time-integrated IceCube sensitivity, the team placed upper limits on the contributions of the flares to the isotropic diffuse neutrino flux.
Prof. Yoshida remarks: “We hope that this study helps improve our understanding of the contribution of blazars to astrophysical neutrinos. Application of the present method to further observations might have the potential to contribute to the advancement of scientific knowledge of the origin of astrophysical neutrinos.”

365 Marvel Comics Paper Cut-Out SuperHeroes - One Hero, Every Day, All Year…
August 16th - Betty Ross
Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Ross was born in California, the only child of Air Force General Thaddeus Ross and his wife Karen. Betty’s mother died when she was quite young and her father rarely had any time for her, always buried in his work for the Air Force.  Following college, Betty went to live with her father during a time where the General was in charge of top secret ‘Gamma Bomb Project’ at Desert Base in New Mexico.  Here Betty met and ultimately fell in love with the project’s lead scientist, Dr. Bruce Banner.
An accident occurred where Banner was exposed to a highly concentrated dose of experimental gamma radiation, causing him to transform into the monstrous hero known as The Incredible Hulk.  Betty came to discover the Hulk’s true identity as Bruce Banner and she aided him in evading capture by her father and the military forces.
Betty and The Hulk would embark on many adventures together.  Being the girlfriend of The Hulk made for a frequently a perilous affair as Betty found herself embroiled in all manner of action and intrigue.  And Betty proved up to the challenge, acting as the hero and saving the day nearly as often as her gamma-powered partner.
At one point, the villain known as MODOK abducted Betty and used a sample of The Hulk’s radiation to mutate her into a powerful being with greatly enhanced strength, wings supporting high-speed flight and sharpened claws. Under MODOK’s mental control, Betty became ‘The Harpy’ and battled The Hulk.  While The Hulk was unable to defeat The Harpy, his alter ego of Bruce Banner was able to create a device that caused her to revert to her human form.
Later, Betty and Bruce were married and enjoyed a short period of happiness together before new perils would drive them apart.  Not long thereafter, Betty came to discover that she was suffering from fatal radiation poisoning.  At first this was thought to be a result of her elongated exposure to the gamma radiation emanating from the Hulk; yet it was later revealed to be a furtive attack orchestrated by the villain known as The Leader.
It appeared as though Betty succumbed to the poisoning and died.  Not long thereafter, the mysterious Red She-Hulk appeared on the scene heading a mercenary squad named Code Red.  It was ultimately reveled that this Red She-Hulk was actually Betty Ross, having been transformed into a hulk by way of the machinations of the villainous group called The Intelligencia.  These villains were initially controlling Betty’s will but she ultimately regained full control of her mind and body after a battle with Skaar.
Betty would go on to have many more adventures as the Red She-Hulk.  She was later once more transformed into The Harpy and has acted as a member of The Incredible Hulks and, more recently, Dr. Strange’s reformed iteration of the Defenders.
Actress Jennifer Connelly portrayed Betty Ross in the 2003 movie, The Hulk; while actress Liv Tyler has played the character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  The heroine first appeared in the pages of Incredible Hulk #1 (1962).

Watched Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero on a whim the other night. Things I liked:
Pan. She had so much fun whenever she was with Papa or Grandpa Piccolo! Not so much when they were both busy fighting the giant monster, but hey.
The movie focuses on Piccolo, Gohan, and Pan instead of Goku and Vegeta.
Magenta's rant about how Capsule Corp is clearly just a front for a coalition of alien invaders working to control the Earth. It's 90% recognizable conspiratorial nonsense (minus the antisemitism and unpleasant context) and 10% weird sh*t that's just canon.
Despite the Red Ribbon Army's advanced intelligence-gathering tech, they still consider Mr. Satan to be a threat on par with Goku or Vegeta.
Piccolo has a house now!
Super Sai-ants.
Gamma 1's occasional moments of genre savvy. The first thing he says is "You say you killed King Piccolo? Did you look for the body?"
The Gammas in general, really. Especially the background squabbling-siblings moments.
All the new characters have such delightful, quirky personalities. Dragon Ball is at its best when it's a comedy series spiced with action.
Piccolo doing that thing Frieza did in the Broly movie where he hurt Paragus to make Broly get a rage-induced power-up, just without actually hurting Pan.
I can't talk much about Max Cell without ruining the positive tone I'm aiming for here, but I like the way he serves as a fulcrum of conflict between Magenta and Dr. Hedo, and that his design makes Semi-Perfect Cell look intimidating. (And not just by virtue of being kaiju-sized.)
One storyboard artist really liked the idea of the Z-fighters jumping off of high things in skydiving poses before activating their flight, and the higher-ups were right to let them do it twice.
Namekian stretchy-arms and gigantification return! Piccolo even uses both at the same time! More Dragon Ball fight scenes should use weird little abilities like that; stretchy arms aren't gonna win a fight Piccolo would lose otherwise, but they make a fight scene more unique and interesting.
The animation is good, the haters just noticed that it's CG.
Pan. She's adorable.
Things I didn't like:
Enough "Ha ha, Dr. Hedo/Gotenks is fat" jokes to stand out as a Thing.
Act 3 is basically just one overstuffed fight scene.
Cell Max is fine as a plot point and setpiece, I guess, but also not interesting.
There is no way Goten and Trunks haven't been fusing for fun enough to remember how it works. If they messed up because they were rushing or because of a disruption from the active action scene or something, that would be one thing, but suggesting that they're just rusty is...kinda dumb.
Gohan's new transformation feels like that form Future Trunks got in the Goku Black arc, in that it's an unexplained power-up he randomly got that I assume is meant to justify him fighting god-tier foes, but they didn't want to give him Super Saiyan God or Blue because reasons. My feelings about Orange Piccolo are similar, but with more understanding about why they didn't give him an existing Super Saiyan form and less irritation about being an obvious retread of the Super Saiyan 2 transformation bit in the Cell arc.
Also, Gohan's new transformation's hair. On one hand, it's among the most obvious ways that said transformation is calling back to the SSJ2 transformation against Cell, which is irritating. On the other hand, it also looks absurd. It's just...scale up Gohan's preteen hairstyle by 250% and make it gray. Why gray? And why make it that big? If it had gone full SSJ3 I might have liked it, but it doesn't go far enough, and the hair stays too stiff, like it doesn't realize it's three feet long and should be pulled down by gravity.
Basically every scene on Beerus's planet, and not just because Goku and Vegeta were there. It's good to establish why they're not coming in to save the day, but they didn't need to spend so much time on it! And they definitely didn't have to use that time on a pointless fight scene and Beerus flirting with Cheelai!
Gohan getting more focus? Getting to be a character who's important to the plot? I like that! The interpretation of that idea as "Gohan needs to focus on training instead of studying all the time"? Not so much. At least it was mixed in with a dash of "You're so focused on the academic stuff that you're neglecting your family, too," which is a less frustrating point.

Have you ever thought of moving abroad? If you could live anywhere, where would it be?
I have thought about moving abroad! It was all I wanted to do when I was younger (and we had no money and couldn't afford to go anywhere overseas). Back then I thought a lot about Canada mostly because it was cold, or New Zealand, because it was cold, lmao.
When I was able to travel, I thought about Melbourne (which isn't really moving abroad, but hey, it is a 4 hour flight away which feels like the same thing sometimes), and also Scotland, which I well and truly fell in love with. We even priced up real estate in Scotland and talked about making it feasible.
But...unfortunately, having an extremely rare genetic and incurable cancer condition means you almost always have to be very close to a hospital with specialists who actually understand your condition and manage it, and Scotland actually isn't known for being one of the best hubs in the world for the SDHD gene fault. On top of that, the NHS wouldn't be free for me as healthcare, and the yearly MRIs, thrice yearly PET scans and blood tests alone to monitor things are a lot of money if you're not able to access socialised healthcare.
There's only a few places in the world that would actually be kind of skilled enough and have the right kind of specialists for my disease, and that ruled out New Zealand, Scotland (especially the time spent waiting to access the NHS in the first place), Canada, and anywhere else I wanted to live. It's left us with other locations in Australia, but again, the only other place I really want to move is Tasmania, and anyone who wants treatment for this condition in Tasmania has to fly to Melbourne and back again just for consultation appointments.
To give you an idea of how hard it is to find specialists.
I am...miraculously lucky here in Perth. I almost thought we'd have to leave the state for a few months to find a specialist for my condition, and it turned out we lucked into two, and I have one of the best in Australia. Depending on the number of tumours I grow and what they're doing, I need access to the best neurosurgeons, vascular surgeons, endocrinologists, ENT surgeons, and medical and radiation oncologists who know what PRRT is, or gamma ray, or debulking. People with this condition die in places with specialists who don't understand. These tumours can cause a hypertensive crisis if you so much as touch them - biopsies have literally killed us, and many don't understand not to do them because when most doctors see a tumour they want to stick a needle in it.
I don't recommend having disabilities of certain kinds - particularly the kinds that need unique management (one of my tumours occurs in only 1/20,000,000 people to give you an idea of how rare it is) - if you have dreams of moving abroad. It was a pretty sad realisation honestly, because I'd be like 'but what if- oh, the tumours.'
These ticking time bombs basically mean I can never move far away from a hospital of any kind, and it's incurable, so you know, that's that pretty much done. No more indulging thoughts of moving abroad. But I'd like to visit Scotland again one day, when it's safe enough for immunocompromised people to travel freely. Which will probably not be in my lifetime. :/

NASA Missions Study What May Be a 1-In-10,000-Year Gamma-ray Burst
Top picture: XMM-Newton images recorded 20 dust rings, 19 of which are shown here in arbitrary colors. This composite merges observations made two and five days after GRB 221009A erupted. Dark stripes indicate gaps between the detectors. A detailed analysis shows that the widest ring visible here, comparable to the apparent size of a full moon, came from dust clouds located about 1,300 light-years away. The innermost ring arose from dust at a distance of 61,000 light-years – on the other side of our galaxy. GRB221009A is only the seventh gamma-ray burst to display X-ray rings, and it triples the number previously seen around one. Credit: ESA/XMM-Newton/M. Rigoselli (INAF)
Bottom Pic: This illustration shows the ingredients of a long gamma-ray burst, the most common type. The core of a massive star (left) has collapsed, forming a black hole that sends a jet of particles moving through the collapsing star and out into space at nearly the speed of light. Radiation across the spectrum arises from hot ionized gas (plasma) in the vicinity of the newborn black hole, collisions among shells of fast-moving gas within the jet (internal shock waves), and from the leading edge of the jet as it sweeps up and interacts with its surroundings (external shock). Credit: NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center
On Sunday, Oct. 9, 2022, a pulse of intense radiation swept through the solar system so exceptional that astronomers quickly dubbed it the BOAT – the brightest of all time. The source was a gamma-ray burst (GRB), the most powerful class of explosions in the universe.
The burst triggered detectors on numerous spacecraft, and observatories around the globe followed up. After combing through all of this data, astronomers can now characterize just how bright it was and better understand its scientific impact.
“GRB 221009A was likely the brightest burst at X-ray and gamma-ray energies to occur since human civilization began,” said Eric Burns, an assistant professor of physics and astronomy at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. He led an analysis of some 7,000 GRBs – mostly detected by NASA’s Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope and the Russian Konus instrument on NASA’s Wind spacecraft – to establish how frequently events this bright may occur. Their answer: once in every 10,000 years.
The burst was so bright it effectively blinded most gamma-ray instruments in space, which means they could not directly record the real intensity of the emission. U.S. scientists were able to reconstruct this information from the Fermi data. They then compared the results with those from the Russian team working on Konus data and Chinese teams analyzing observations from the GECAM-C detector on their SATech-01 satellite and instruments on their Insight-HXMT observatory. Together, they prove the burst was 70 times brighter than any yet seen.

With a choked grunt, Limbo is splayed out onto the Tube platform, having been hurled down a short set of concrete stairs. Catching himself on a set of turnstiles (albeit rather painfully), the disgruntled hitman gazes up the stairs from which he came.
To his amazement, his longtime quarry Q. Bensis (a college botany professor turned druglord) had decided to get high off his own supply. Bensis, typically a scrawny, bald man in his late fifties, had ingested a large dose of Gamma Blue, a powerful deliriant that also served a stimulant. Limbo surmised that this was done in preparation for the two men’s confrontation; despite the hitman being a relatively heavy person, the much weaker Bensis was able to pick him up and throw him like Donkey Kong. As a matter of fact, the professor had been handing Limbo’s ass to him all afternoon.
Wheezing, the hitman reached for his gun, uncaring of any bystanders around him.

Suddenly, Bensis appeared in the stairwell, the mid-afternoon sun lighting the whole scene up with bleached white light. Limbo drew his pistol, ready for battle once more.

A Grand Machine, a glittering silver snake of stainless steel streaks across the plains, its diesel hum serving as a quiet lullaby for its passengers. Jon had not taken a long distance train ride in a long time, preferring the cost of a cheap flight, or the independence of a road trip. However, his target for the evening was a known train enjoyer, so where the money went, Limbo followed. After all, when money talks, bullshit walks.

The criminal found himself in the observation deck, amongst other passengers, watching the nighttime scenery whizz past and sipping a cup of cola through a coffee stirrer. He was sizing people up, searching for a middle aged man with a shiny bald head and a long brown beard.
"...more than a symbol, more than I bargained for," the hitman whispered to himself.

My #1 post of 2022
[ @songofsilentechoes is back.]
With the quiet click of the glass door behind him, Limbo steps out onto the sidewalk, having spent the last sixty-two minutes of his life in therapy. As is customary when living in Neo-Los Angeles, the cyborg checked both ways before proceeding towards the parking garage at the end of the block.

It was getting late, with the sun beginning to crest below the vast, dirty skyline of the big city. It was also beginning to drizzle. As usual with these late-night therapy sessions, the thought of grabbing carryout in lieu of his typical iced coffee flashed in his head, but after feeling his stomach bounce in a way he wasn’t particularly fond of, Limbo shook this thought from his head.
