And yet, as they say, the heart is a leaf and the wind makes it throb.

And this deep placidity, this silky tenderness, into what cross-section of the cosmos does it settle now, onto what edge and propitious nuance, into what relief?

A poem by Forrest Gander

The Conversation
All the while he talks to the boy, their son, on the phone, she is interrupting, telling him something to say, not to say, indicating that she needs to talk to the boy herself. Rather than dampening her enthusiasm or trying to listen to both at once, finally he hands her the phone. And rather than resentment, what he feels inside himself is the primordial upwelling of tenderness.

“I came for you, churning, turning the present into purgatory because I need to turn everything to tragedy before I can see it, because it must be leavened with remorse for the feeling to rise.”

Unbearable
Lucidity of loss. What an unbearable phrase, an unbearable thought, an unbearable condition. What perverse joy does life get in defeating a human through grief and enabling that very person to articulate that very grief this deeply. And this is how life also makes you fall in love with such poetry, and rarely, with such poets. All this… it’s unfair, it’s insane, it’s unbearable.

"To C," Forrest Gander
Inside, inside the return, inside, the hero diminishes. Over her vessel they place a veil, and when it is lifted the name of the vessel has been lost. Consider the darkness of the water which has no scent and neither can it swallow. Yet the ship’s bow extends over the proscenium like a horse at a fence and the orchestra stands and files out. On the long walk home, I long to see your face.

Settle your perfect hips here and the bow of wet arrows loosens into the night the petals that form your form let your clay limbs climb the silence and its pale ladder rung by rung taking off with me in my dream. I can sense you scaling the shade tree that sings to the shadows. Dark is the world’s night without you my love,

🔎 YA Under the Radar 7 🔍
I have been working on this list in the series all year 😂 it just took me that long to read a decent amount of underrated YA - but I got there in the end and I'm pretty happy with the recs on this list 🥰
there are rainbow flags next to LGBT+ rep, wheelchair symbols next to disability rep and koalas next to Australia YA simply because there's a lot of that on this particular list
so take a gander and maybe consider picking up a title or two (or ten) in 2024 to support lesser-known authors and books 😊
