Summary: That one word brought Time back to the weeks after their adventure started. On a night after a difficult and bloody fight that left himself and First awake to watch over the other boys. Time had spoken a little about Malon, his dear wife, and had made the choice to tell his fellow hero about how he missed her. In response, First had told him about his home.
-----
A bloody battle leaves The Chain with a horrifying revelation.
The fic is under this nifty cut here that I remembered how to do so have fun!
The battle was tough. It was harrowing. It was draining.
But they managed to win, only at a cost.
Time pressed against the oozing wound that was nearly cleaving First in half. The shadow had snuck on the group from the hoards of other monsters, aiming to strike the newest edition to their group, and had nearly skewered Sky before First had managed to get in the way of the slash.
The man was now collapsed on the ground, breathing heavily as Hyrule sat on his other side with his hands surrounded by the soft glow of healing magic.
The others had finished off the rest of the hoard, Twilight and Warriors leading the group as both older men were down. Sky had rushed over as soon as he could, their newly added member had been a mystery to all of them.
He never pulled down the hood from his cloak, never slept close to others in the camp, and was oddly skittish around both Time and First.
In the beginning, it had sown suspicion in some of the chain. Time remembers when Warriors had confided in him that he was worried Sky had been sent by the Shadow, a false hero meant to divide the group. That had all stopped when Wild started seeking Sky out. The Champion only ever did that with a select few of the chain and with Sky being added onto that list, it quelled any lingering fears.
Now, Sky had bolted to Hylia's favored the minute he could, dropping heavily beside Time as he reached out to touch First before his hand jerked to a standstill as if slapped. The boy was shaking and Time nudged him gently from where his own spot was beside their comrade.
A hooded head turning towards him had Time tilting his head towards First "He's a fighter, and Hyrule has managed to heal wounds from the shadow before." The words seemed to help slightly, Sky lowering his hand and looking back to First.
As the others finally made their way over, the body beneath his hands shuddered before slowly falling still. Hyrule cursed, Wind asked what happened while Warriors dropped on Time's other side to get at the wound. His boys were all either asking what was going on or frantically searching their bags for potions or fairies. Between all of the movement is when Time heard the one thing that drove the nail deeper into his already breaking heart.
" Dad? "
Time, removing his hands from the wound as Warriors finally was able to stitch it, turned to the smaller hero beside him. They'd never heard Sky talk before, the boy preferring sign ever since they met him, and the hero always kept himself quiet either in happiness or sorrow as if trying to be as unobtrusive as possible.
That one word brought Time back to the weeks after their adventure started. On a night after a difficult and bloody fight that left himself and First awake to watch over the other boys. Time had spoken a little about Malon, his dear wife, and had made the choice to tell his fellow hero about how he missed her. In response, First had told him about his home.
About his son
It was clear at that moment why Hylia had chosen First as her favorite. The man had clearly held so much love in his heart. Had been practically radiating it as he spoke about a small boy who followed him where the man went. A small boy who he’d taken in after a terrible night of disaster and death. Hylias favor was the clearest in the fact that First had left his son in his friend's care so that he could set out in an effort to keep him from having to follow in First's steps.
That night played back to Time in a matter of seconds as he heard another shake call from Sky, tears audible as the boy reached out to grip the elder hero's hand.
Quickly, he reached out and placed his hand on Sky's shoulder. Pulling him away from First as he got more frantic and his hood slipped revealing a face almost identical to Hylias favored. Honey-colored hair, earrings the same shade of red as First's cloak, and eyes blue enough to put the heaven to shame. It was the final blow that Time needed to quickly scoop the sobbing teen up and usher him away from his father.
That night would haunt Time, as he cradled a wailing boy who wanted his father to come back. A boy who'd lost the man that raised him to the same thing that'd taken his childhood from him.
And when the sobs had died down, the sun rose and brought along with it the raising of a chest that the sun had blessed.

I love the fannon that Time calls Twi "Pup" as an affectionate, playful nickname and tease. continuing that train of thought.. I think that there is this golden opportunity when Time fully realizes that Twilight is his descendant by blood. The thought would cross his mind that possibly Twi is named after him, HIM. As of now, he is Link Sr, and I think that would be a soft spot for Time's heart. Link Sr has a Link Jr. Seeing as they use their shared name LINK for something that absolutely demands attention. Link Sr would call out "Link Jr" with the same energy as a parent saying your full name. Wind smugly "Oooh you're in trouble" I can believe that is how he told Malon that they have a descendant "Hey guess what, I am Link Sr now. Yes, we have a Jr, it's one of these boys. Guess which one it is".

I had seen your "I have no mouth and I must scream" comic and thought it was fantastic. And then someone reblogged one of your recent whump requests, and it was amazing. And then I just started scrolling through your blog, and I love it.
If you're still taking requests, I would love some Legend whump! Magical exhaustion maybe, or if you're feeling it, stuck halfway in and out of his painting transformation
awwweee thank you @pokegeek151!
I went with Magical exhaustion hehe. I had the idea to give him a lil bit of a nosebleed. just like what happens to Eleven in 'Stranger Things'
and ohmahgosh that 'stuck halfway in/out of his painting form' is SUCH a good idea!!! unfortunately i have no idea how I would have drawn that XD. was almost imagining like- his top half is just hanging there stuck in the wall and the poor guy just fell asleep XD
anywaysss, i hope you enjoy!💙
CW! nosebleed

...Buckle your seatbelts and ready yourself.
Tumblr media
There were questions.
Silent ones that were never voiced out loud. Quiet whispers amongst themselves as they wondered about the newest addition to the group. If one offered to ask, they were quickly shot down by the eldest before shooing them all off to leave the new member alone. They were nothing like them; they knew how to wield a sword, but they're not a Link like them. They bore no triforce, no heroic spirit that they all shared, and the same name was not theirs.
They looked tired, thrown out of the loop, emotionally and mentally. Their eyes never looked into either the eldest or the youngest eyes, almost as if they were afraid of something. Afraid of...them. They clung tightly to a long red scarf as if they were hoping it would ground them, but the group was no fools to the cries, whimpers, and sobs that escaped the member's lips, no matter how hard they tried to hide it. The silent wails were made into the scarf, riddled with tears, snot, and drool. Their face contorted in anguish pain, white-knuckling the red fabric, even biting it as they tried to conceal the sounds.
The muffled cries of their name made their heart clench as they all lay awake, the harsh wails willing tears into their own eyes, now knowing the newest member had lost someone.
‘They've lost their own Link,’ Legend silently wept at the thought, knowing how deep the pain is of losing someone you love deeply, and that they’re gone in a blink of an eye.
'How long has it been since they last saw him?' Time wondered quietly.
'Please,' Warriors sniffles, 'please don't tell me they saw him dead.'
'I'm so sorry,' Sky covered his mouth to hide the sobs.
Their fists pound the earth underneath them, slumping on their side then curling into a ball.
“Please,” they keen, voice cracking, “please let this be a nightmare. Link, come back, I can’t do this without you.”
Empty.
Empty without the love of another. Weak without him. They felt soulless.

In order: Twilight, Hyrule, Time, Sky, Four, Legend, Wind, Warriors, Wild, and First!
I know First isn't canon to Linked Universe (or at least not yet, as of 4/15/2023), but I love him, and I wanted to draw my take on him so badly.

I’ve been meaning to make a post like this for a while now but kept forgetting. Since First isn’t widely known I wanted people to have an explanation of who the heck this guy is (and why they should love him). So without further ado
Who is the First Hero?
(All of the following pictures are from the Hyrule Historia)
The First Hero (or First as we call him in the Linked Universe fandom) shows up in a tiny manga at the back of the Hyrule Historia (that’s basically an encyclopedia for Zelda). He isn’t technically canon and doesn’t have a game of his own. But according to the manga he is the first Link, Skyward Sword Link’s predecessor.
He lived in a time when Hylia was still a goddess and before Demise’s first attack. He was a royal knight, much like Hyrule Warriors Link, and seemed to be a man of great respect and esteem. Until, that is, he was framed for an unknown crime and imprisoned.
Tumblr media
He remains in the dungeons for four years. Then, when his so called “premonitions of danger” begin to come true, and Demise attacks Hyrule, his people decide “oh, wait! They kinda need a hero now!” So, they set him free and practically beg him to fight for them. He’s understandably bitter about the whole thing, but being the hero he is, he goes out to battle.
Tumblr media
No sooner has he agreed to fight, than the goddess Hylia shows up on her crimson loftwing. She has come to battle Demise and help her people escape to safety.
The loftwing looks down upon the humans as weak and cowardly. But Link stands up to him, telling him “there are those among us who have the courage to fight.” The loftwing admires him for the sentiment, but isn’t convinced. He promises to keep watch over him to see if Link is a worthy rider.
With the loftwing gone to the heavens above, Hylia gives Link the Master Sword
Tumblr media
Link doesn’t think he is worthy of it after his imprisonment, but Hylia assures him that the sword knows better. It sees beyond his tarnished reputation to the kind, brave man beneath.
Though Link is still bitter about everything he has endured, he swears to fight for his friends. He takes the sword and hones it into something a mortal can wield.
Then, he goes to battle.
Hylia rallies the other races around Hyrule to help the Hylians. Meanwhile, Link and his men fight for seven days. Despite their efforts, Demise begins to burn Hyrule to the ground.
In the end, Link goes to face him, promising to slay him.
Tumblr media
But he is badly wounded in the fight. He collapses, weak and near death. Before he can fade away, however, the loftwing shows up and chooses him as his rider.
Tumblr media
He swears to ride with the loftwing forever. Shortly afterward, the dragons from Skyward Sword bless the Master Sword with the power of the Triforce. Then, Link gives the sword to Hylia, who carves Hyrule from the earth.
Link retrieves the sword and drives it into the ground, finishing the job and sending Hyrule skyward.
He wants to follow his people to the skies, but his wounds catch up to him. He falls to the ground. In his last moments he promises that his spirit will always be with his people.
Tumblr media
Hylia seals Demise away, even as the enraged god promises to prevail. Then, she goes to where her fallen hero lies.
She holds him, crying over him and lamenting the pain he had to endure to become the hero Hyrule needed. Knowing that Hyrule will need their help once more, she then promises to reincarnate them both. Only this time, she will be a mortal.
Tumblr media
This story, we learn, becomes legend in the era of Skyward Sword. And the loftwing who Link swore to ride with chooses the child who has his reincarnated spirit, Skyward Sword Link or Sky.
Tumblr media
Now, as for First’s standing in LU…I’m know multiple LU fans (myself included) speculate that Jojo will include him at some point. She’s been cryptic about it when asked though, so we don’t know for sure. Neither do we know when he’ll show up (if he does). So, for now, we can only hope.
…and create our own AU’s in the meantime ;)

What if Sky is the first hero? What if the Hero's Spirit is Sky's spirit? What if Sky's spirit is in all the other Heroes? Maybe all of the other heroes have Sky's sense of justice, and his skill with the sword, and his desire to help people. Maybe the Master Sword recognizes Sky's spirit in every hero and that's why only heroes can wield the Master Sword. She is forever faithful to her first wielder and his undying spirit.

I realised I've never actually shared the detail of my knotwork showing the battle between the First Link and Demise so here you go! This was really fun to create
More info under the cut
This knotwork is loosely based on extant Jelling style examples, although I have absolutely no pretense that it's anywhere near realistic.
On either side of the knotwork you have two figures, Hylia on the left and the First Link on the right. Both are shown with the triforce, Hylia above her because it's a more spiritual part of her existance, and the First on his shield to represent the goddess' patronage.
The knot itself is made of two figures, a wyrm that represents Demise, and a stylised loftwing. On the back of the loftwing is the figure of the First Link, his pose heavily inspired by norse images of Sigurd slaying Fafnir.
Here I have shown the First in the moment that he slays Demise, but have also alluded to his tragic fate by having him also have a sword through his side, showing that he has given his life for his cause.
Also there are a matching set of stylised loftwings on either side of the knotwork because it was fun and they were pretty
I made this as a companion to my fic Untarnished, where the First Link gets a happy ending, actually. It just takes a while.

Linktober (Shadow) 2023
Spirit
Welp turns out my exam season throughly steam rolled through my general Linktober plans, so you get this VERY late thing for now folks who find this, at least until I decide whether to continue this until I finish it even though it's no longer Linktober or if I'll make whatever other stories come later their own thing after exam season is over (mostly because the original for this one is my preferred draft, and that I feel the one for the Link/Dark Link prompt would be kind of wasted if it just sat there collecting dust cause I worked hard on the tension and horror there lord darn it, along with a few others mainly involving Fae Hyrule, Twilight, Time, First, among other Links like Legend, Sky, Warriors, just all of the boys, I wanted to give them all proper spotlight and still want to do that in any way I can). Welp. *Downs coffee like a shot* Also really need to find out how to make a Masterlist on mobile, figure out how AO3 works and answer asks.
Anyway, not really any warnings this time besides Reader Not Being Okay (par the course really) and angst.
As always can be read as either romantic or platonic, Reader is gender neutral on purpose, technically is meant to be read as either Hero's Shade Time x Reader or First x Reader mainly, but you can interpret it as any Link really lol
Good reading!
This corner of Faron Woods was quiet this time of year.
The woods were solemn in this Hyrule, the sliver of moonlight barely enough of a guide through the mist, it was silent but for the soft padding of animals through the underbrush and the howl of a wolf in the distance (not Wolfie's, not musical enough). The stars were your only company as you were separated from the group, the air was cold agaisnt your skin as you attempted to find your way.
Being alone in the forests of Hyrule never spelled anything good for anyone, but as you felt the brush of a hand tenderly twined in yours, the ghost of leather and the faint clinking of steel, and a faint glow of pale gold and ivory cutting through the veil of the night, mindful of roots you may trip onto and never flickering too far out of sight you couldn't feel safer, even  if instead something like melancholy threatened to lock your throat with the chains of silence, you felt as warm as the soft twilight glow and as frigid as ice, frostburned with the bitter cold of your own warring emotions.
You can't help but chuckle a bit whille holding a old scabbard close to your heart, it's a wry sound, "It's been a while, hasn't it?"
There is no answer, of course there isn't, but you don't mind, you know he'll listen, thorns wrap around your heart and crawl up your throat, the smell of lilies and steel coats and sticks in your throat like honey, or maybe blood, "... I didn't think you'd show up, you know? I always considered the possibility but..." You trail off, you feel something brush your side, you can only see him in the corner of your eyes or with a passing glance, there but not, existing but gone, so you keep your eyes on the road and in the flicker of light, so you carefully don't look to your side, you don't think you could contain the shaking in your heart otherwise, to stare at inevitability and prophecy, "... I know, I know you're fine. At least for now, I apologize for all the trouble I gave you."
'It's alright. It could never be a hardship aiding you.', the voice echoes in your ears, and you swallow thickly, breath hitching, the warmth of the sun in the fields of Hyrule, the wind caressing your hair, the song of the animals in Faron Woods, someone holding you carefully, fondly. The warmth of your hand in his. Not really here, but not gone either, more feeling than true echo.
You chuckle, and try to pretend it's not a bit breathless, something like a wounded keen, "... You're too kind. Too, too kind, thank you."
Spirits in Hyrule never spell anything good, in this wild land of light and shadow in a gestalt of divinity. There are some exceptions though, even if it hurts to witness then. So you follow him through the dark, certain that as you've guided his way once, he'll lead you now to where you need to go.
----------------------------------------------------------
... The clearing he leads you to is open, but by no means truly quiet among the trees, there is no peace to be found for the armored skeleton here. You choke on sorrow, on unfinished business, on the cruelty of being brought to ruin and being denied peace, and you stumble towards the familiar figure, almost in a trance as your vision blurs, roots and thorny vines wrap over rusted armor and a thorn cape, the skeleton's void sockets piercing through your soul, illuminated by the solemn gaze of the wretched moon and it's uncaring maids of honor in the stars.
You fall to your knees near the decaying skeleton, biting back against the wounded sound that attempts to leave your throat with enough strenght to bleed, you lay the scabbard by his side with a bouquet of lilies and shiver at the gentle, phantom touch, so soft, so loving it almost leads you to ruin all over again.
'... It's foolish to grieve for someone who isn't gone yet.' the thought comes to you, yet you can't help it. You still hurt for him, you still hold onto the fury at the heavens themselves for denying them quietus. For denying them rest over and over and over again. To watch this cycle and be helpless to stop it all due to the will of uncaring gods.
Alive. Dead. Alive. Dead. Denied full rest over and over again, to watch the chance at rest to the kindest of souls found in this world you found yourself in.
You barely register the touch to your cheek, ephemeral as it is, as you can't help but shed tears, can't help but grieve. Because if you don't, who will?
You know by now that some wounds can never heal, some rifts can never be mended. Even with the guarantee of cyclic, eternal rebirth, some things never return to how they were. And reminding yourself of this inevitability to them will never not hurt, even if you know it's futile to blame anyone but the one god who started this, and maybe the goddess who stood complacent to it. It leaves a bitter taste in your mouth that it'll one day come to this, that the frost of death and the sharpness of pain will leave a mark the sands of time can't scar over.
You reach a trembling hand towards the one in your cheek, try to find catharsis in the remains of decayed, dead yet ever eternal, ever growing love. And you breathe.
'We'll meet again. So do not mourn for me, please.'
You don't think you could deny him if you tried. Not when you know he's trying to soothe you, to thaw your sorrow. To allow your heart's healing to fallow.
"We will, I know. I'm sorry for making you worry." You chuckle, leaning into the cold, trying to brand the memory of the shadowed, but not gone love given to you so you can return it in kind. Just until you meet again, just until you can give all you can to his not yet decomposing self, grasping onto what remains of him, "I love you."
'I love you too. Until we meet again.'
The cold is gone, the echo of love leaves. And you breathe, and pretend you don't feel empty.
(When you see Link again, reuniting with the Chain on the next day's twilight. You hug him as tight as you can, and hope you he doesn't notice the tears in your eyes. And that you don't feel the lingering traces of a frigid embrace.
When no one is looking, you wave goodbye to the shade. And pray he dreams of warmer days until he finds quietus.)
#linked universe x reader#hero's shade x reader#linked universe time x reader#first x reader#hylia's chosen hero x reader#first link x reader#also know as What Happens When Summer Watches Corpse Bride after Playing MJM#I'll never not be emotional about the Hero's Shade and how it's an inevitability that Time will always die relatively young#how First died alone in the surface and likely never got a proper burial#And the fact we never learn what happens to the heroes after the task is done and THE ONE INSTANCE#we do is to learn they died young in some manner (ex Time. The Link before Hyrule. First.#Probably Twilight if we go by the theory Wolfie in BOTW is a spirit sent to help Wild#Technically pre calamity Wild because losing your memories is technically death of identity although that's for another story#and related to Lost#Most of the more effective LoZ games present themselves as either dark fairy tales and I'm running with that concept#Plus it's literally LEGEND of Zelda. Hardly do things end well for protagonists in actual legends and mythology involving gods#I think I have a right to worry#Anyway I'll probably elaborate more later because I'm tired lol#gotta perish to tackle studying and THEN be free to start on the pages long LU/LoZ essays /jk#unless?#we'll see#summer writes linktober 2023#summer writes linktober shadow 2023#summer writes#this short fic was also brought to you by the death holiday we have here in my country because it always makes me sad#and thinking of the Hero's Shade and what happens to First basically made it Depression times 100 lol

What are your LU/LOZ First headcanons?
Personality, trauma responses, family role (big brother, father, only child, etc), favorite foods/colors/season, anything!
I've never written First before, I don't see that much of him either and I'm working through fanon stuff while waiting for my paycheck to get the Hyrule Historia(is it Hystoria?), but I'd love to hear your headcanons for him!
