Plant Paleobiology term projects, part 1

This term I got to teach a new class: Plant Paleobiology. It was a LOT of work for various reasons, but rewarding too! We are part of an NSF-funded consortium to digitize fossil and living ferns in our collections, and I wanted to bring this into the classroom along with a bit of creativity. So for a final project students chose one (preferably) pteridophyte (fern, horsetail, clubmoss, and extinct relatives) and did a scientific illustration of the specimen, artistic piece inspired by the specimen, and an informational drawing and text based on some aspect of the species’ biology. 

My graduate student instructor, Zack, and I were impressed by everything we saw and it was so much fun to have a final lab period where they each got to talk about their pieces and show them off! The work that was voted as the top favorite was done by Ashley Hamersma on Plenasium (Osmundites) chandleri, a permineralized stem from the ~45 million year old Clarno Formation in Oregon that belongs to the Royal Fern family (Osmundaceae).  I did not vote -- which is good because my first paleobotany project was also on an osmundaceous stem so I have a soft spot for them. You can read a bit more about it in a recent iDigBio Biodiversity Spotlight article we did.

For her artistic portion, she made a rubber stamp based on the cross section of the stem.

Ashley did four prints: plain black ink, purple/blue ink, black ink colored with hibiscus (and lemon juice -- she found it turned blue on the paper without being acidified to keep it pink, but that gave it a great effect!), and black ink colored with turmeric dye.
