Cage of Ice and Echoes by Pam Godwin

My emotions were all over the place reading this! There was bone-crushing despair, heart wrenching pain, pulse pounding fear, soul lifting happiness, and skin tingling heat. Even though the story is told in different characters POV, I didn’t need to headers to tell me who, I could tell by their narrative who we were seeing into the psyche of. This is book two of three, and while one piece is solved, it seems like a million more are more scrambled than ever. Exactly like the first book, these people are living rent free in my head, and I don’t see that changing any time soon, it is that compelling and consuming

Jon watched them leave, and Arya watched Jon. His face had grown as still as the pool at the heart of the godswood. Finally he climbed down off the window. "The show is done," he said. He bent to scratch Ghost behind the ears. The white wolf rose and rubbed against him. "You had best run back to your room, little sister. Septa Mordane will surely be lurking. The longer you hide, the sterner the penance. You'll be sewing all through winter. When the spring thaw comes, they will find your body with a needle still locked tight between your frozen fingers." Arya didn't think it was funny. "I hate needlework!" she said with passion. "It's not fair!" "Nothing is fair," Jon said. He messed up her hair again and walked away from her, Ghost moving silently beside him. Nymeria started to follow too, then stopped and came back when she saw that Arya was not coming. Reluctantly she turned in the other direction. (Arya, AGOT)
this whole moment is giving me major endgame foreshadowing vibes (especially but not exclusively wrt the outline) at the end of this chapter jon states that "the show is done" and he's referring to the fighting down below but it could be interpreted as a nod towards the end of the series in general. i think thats fair given the nature of the next line.
jon follows up with a warning for arya and it is clearly some very heavy handed foreshadowing. it refers to arya's general arc trajectory from beginning to end: she will be hiding and sewing all through winter but when the spring comes her needle (the symbol of her identity, home, family) will remain locked between her fingers.
this line is totally a carryover from the earliest asoiaf plotline when arya was going to travel to the wall and beyond in the first book. the imagery doesn’t fit quite as well as it would have if arya was spending significant time in a frozen, snowy environment, but the overall idea is still relevant.
after this warning arya, with passion, cries that "it's not fair!" and jon's only response is that "nothing is fair". when this dialogue was written jon and arya were going to have a tortured love affair throughout the trilogy. arya and jon would, after much angst, discover they weren't siblings so they could actually be together......except i think they still would've been driven apart for whatever reason (most likely jon's self imposed? exile to secure bran's throne). its unfair but theres nothing either of them can do about it. i have no doubt arya will want to follow jon (and ghost as we see nymeria, arya's soul bonded animal, try to follow), but that is not her fate.
"reluctantly" arya has to turn and walk in a different direction from jon. she returns to her room. in the end i think jon will have to go north again, for good, and arya will stay in winterfell because somebody has to accept that responsibility if bran rules as king of the seven kingdoms. arya and jon will remain connected thru their wolves and the warg bond they share. that will be a tangible connection that endures since i think ghost and nymeria will be by their sides when all is said and done just as they are in this moment.
grrm has consistently said he's working towards the same ending he's had in mind since 1991 and this does really feel like exactly the kind of bittersweet note he'd end things on.

Some Lincoln x MC Angst
Heal What Has Been Hurt (Change the Fate’s Design) Part 1 of 2 (part 2 available here)
Fanfic about the @itlivesproject game...
Basis: Vax is dead. Matthias McQuoid is the root of all problems. Killing him isn’t enough. (or, Lincoln uses the watch.)
Pairings: Lincoln x MC (mine is called Vax!), but intermittently (they don’t break up or anything, but well, look at the basis...)
Warnings: chapter 20 spoilers, lots of angst, swears, death, blood, injury, there’s going to be body horror in the next part, but it’s not in this one (except for the blood.) this is going to be dark!
Part 1 word count: 1834
Part 1 under cut!
Vax hated red.
It followed him everywhere.
Festering in his flesh–
In the flare of his nostrils, in the force of his fists.
Festering in the forest–
In the frown of his face, in the flounce of his feet.
Vax hated red.
Red was always hot. Burning, scalding.
I don’t want to be red anymore.
(be careful what you wish for.)
Tonight, red was cold.
He didn’t know what it was to die.
To stare the reaper in his face, and lift his unshaking gaze to it.
Red answered him…
When no one else would.
Red was loyal. Curt. Efficient.
Tonight, in these hallowed hills, red was cold.
As it spills out from him.
And he doesn’t know what it is to die…
Because there’s no authority figure left to curse. No finger left to point.
Finally, he finds, he doesn’t have any red left in him.
Not in his veins. Not in his head.
Red doesn’t blanket his fall, when he tips into the icy fingertips of the plunge.
Red doesn’t hold him, and cry, softly, softly, softly, with shuddering shakes.
Red doesn’t sneer:
“I told you so.”
The line they both thought (both dreaded– ) would be on their lips.
But red doesn’t hold him. Not tonight. Not like that. Instead, blue holds him, and all he squeaks is “I’m sorry, Abel.”
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry– ” he stutters, over Lincoln’s shaking shoulders that hold him tight, staring out at Abel, frozen across from them.
“Please take care of Lia. Please. You’re kind – and good - and everything I’m not – please, please, please, please.”
Abel shakes out of his reverie, giving him a determined, tear-filled nod. Amalia’s sobs sound against him, falling into Abel’s side.
Lincoln’s uttering to him softly, softly, softly, so, nonsense against his lips, as he clutches at the red spilling from his fingers.
It paints him, now, in a twisted imitation of an angel’s wings, red against the black of the night.
Vax didn't know how to say those three words.
Not to his friends. Not to Lia. And certainly not to Lincoln.
He didn't know then… He doesn’t know now.
Red held so many words in his throat.
“I am sorry.”
“I love you.”
“I was wrong.”
The trilogy of words he could never say.
But he’s tired of being red. He’s so tired .
Red didn’t permit him to say “I love you.”
But it was there in the way he nodded to Lia, when she did something worthy of his praise.
But it was there in the way when he bristled, when someone said something off to her.
But it was there in the way he grunted in response when Lia asked if he liked her outfit.
In the way how he remembered just exactly how she liked her breakfast, even though the last time she told him was half a decade ago and he’d rolled his eyes in response.
Or in the way his hands went for Lincoln’s own, even as both their teeth gritted, looking into the eyes of a viper.
In the way he’d rest his head against Lincoln’s shoulder, when he thought everyone wasn’t looking, then tear apart with a jump when people teased him about having gone soft.
Or in the way his jaw worked in the way that Lincoln knew to be him swallowing down a smile.
And in the way he followed the man like some lovesick puppy, then, when Abel pointed it out, grumbled how Abel ought to wear glasses all the time, because he was not staring at Lincoln’s ass, thank you very much.
Red didn’t permit him to say “I love you.”
But it was in the way he was there for Abel in the blink of an eye, guarding his side without question.
Or in the way he let out a hmph of laughter at Abel’s jokes, quickly covering his mouth to replace it with a scowl.
In the way he silently bandaged Jocelyn’s leg, against her protests, promising to break her leg if she jostled it again, even as the momentary frown betrayed the false threat in his eyes.
Or in the way he turned to the side, stifling a smile, as he complained about how chipper Connor was.
…So he didn’t know how to say I love you.
And so maybe neither did Lincoln.
But they knew. They knew.
Even if they never said it, they knew.
“Lia - I’m sorry - I’m sorry- ” Vax says, shuddering.
And he means it.
He means it.
Because he doesn’t know what else to say. Because it’s all he knows how to say. Because it was one of the only words red would not permit him to ever utter, the only words red ever snatched out of his lungs.
Lincoln holds him closer, and Abel stares, frozen in horror as his oldest friend and his oldest friend’s lover watch the red wash out of his veins.
“Do you want to try again?” Lincoln says suddenly, voice raw. He pushes a locket into Vax’s red-wrought hands.
Vax stares back at him, confused.
“What?…”
“Your psychometry. We were practising. Do you want to try again?”
“... Why ?” Vax rasps, slumping his head against the stone.
The light haloes him in ways gods could never. Lincoln prays those same gods won’t take him now. Not now. Not yet.
“There’s a message on this. You’ll… you’ll want to hear it.”
The mis-matched eyed man looks at him with his usual petulance.
“If it’s too much…” Lincoln reaches for him.
“No,” comes Vax’s determined voice, all but melting into his touch, “I’ll do it,” he says, a fire in his fluttering eyes – never one to back down from a challenge, even now.
Even now. As he lay dying.
…It hurts. Vax winces as his fingers wrap around the necklace, and Lincoln isn’t sure if his brows are furrowing in concentration or in pain (probably both.)
He shouldn’t have jostled him, shouldn’t have given him–
But a faint smile blooms on Vax’s lips. Unrestrained, free of his usual red.
And he falls back with a laugh, chuckling at some hidden message.
“So?”
“Love you too.” Vax utters, quietly, but he hears him.
He hears him.
For the last time.
It would be a mercy if they truly closed their eyes.
But that’s not how it happens.
Vax is smiling up at him one moment, and the next moment, his gaze goes distant, and in that moment, he is gone.
………
………
………
He doesn’t think, when he cries for him.
Doesn’t question how, what or why–
But his name - his best friend’s name - is on his lips, as soon as Vax’s head falls against the tapestries of his embrace.
Because Abel is smart. Abel is sweet. Abel is kind.
Because Abel knows everything.
Abel knows all.
…But this time, Abel has no answers to give.
Not one.
…Not this time.
Nothing to offer, but his companionship. But his shoulder, to cry upon.
And Lincoln’s head fits. Like a piece of a puzzle. It fits into the tall man’s shoulders, like it was made for them. Like that was always where his head was supposed to lay.
And Abel doesn’t say anything.
Because he knows, some hurts you can’t heal.
And Abel doesn’t say anything.
Just wraps his arms around him, and buries his face against his neck.
And Abel doesn’t say anything.
Because he’s crying too.
Because he lost a friend, on this day – and soon, a father.
And Abel doesn’t say anything.
Because Amalia’s sidled up behind them, wrapping her shaking arms around them both.
And Abel doesn’t say anything.
Because Jocelyn’s idling in the corner. And she can’t bear herself to look.
And Abel doesn’t say anything.
Because he always says something. And now?
He just..
Wants…
To cry.
………
………
………
A voice pierces through the veil of sobs.
“Hey… Can I–”
Jocelyn starts, hands held out in front of her like some trembling animal, a shrunken shadow of her wildcat-like ferocity.
Lincoln is still as stone in Abel’s arms.
“NO–” A low growl tears his throat, eyes glinting with all the vigour of a vicious venom.
The woman snatches back her arms as though burned, bracing them behind her back.
The three once-friends before her rear back, separating from each other's arms.
“I… I …” She stutters, twisting her hands in her own.
Abel throws her a meaningful look.
Amalia looks pointedly down.
“Fuck. Off.” Lincoln grits, gripping his nails deep into the flesh of his arm.
Jocelyn nods, a sheen to her eye as she steels her jaw and turns her face away from him.
“...I can’t make it better.” She presses, even so, in the smallest her voice has ever been.
“No.”
He’s breathing heavily now, breaths coming like fire from a dragon’s lungs.
And Jocelyn better step away soon. Lest she face the dragon’s wrath.
Lest she be burned.
Abel rises to his feet.
Lincoln’s eyes are like an arrow shot through him, the hurt in them, as Abel goes to follow.
He takes one sorrowful look back, guides Jocelyn out to the mouth of the cave, and his arm ghosts to touch her back…
But it falls just as soon, never to make contact.
She looks at him.
He looks at her.
And Abel clenches his eyes, tips his head to the skies…
Breathes out. Low, slow.
Wind whipping his hair, rain pelting his face.
Then shakes his head. Once, twice, thrice.
...He’s not angry.
Never angry.
But the disappointment is writ across his face.
There’s something to it, being outcast by the most understanding of them all.
Not a condemnation, nor a persecution.
Not an extended hand, nor an olive branch.
Just a sad, slow shake of his head, a plea to get out of here, as much for Lincoln’s sake as Jocelyn’s own.
“...Goodbye, Jocelyn.”
He doesn’t look her way as she retreats.
………
………
………
“We need to deal with this- this– bastard. ”
Amalia nods to Matthias’s still-unconscious body, sprawled unceremoniously against the stone, one with the filth he was spawned of.
Around him, the now-lucid witches crowd, bristling for the oncoming storm.
It’s funny.
How little he looks.
…How normal he looks.
Face pressed up against the stone.
Clothing in tatters.
Fingers twitching softly, softly, so..
But that’s how they get you…
Isn’t it?
………
………
………
Not one moment later, the chime of a clock sounds deep in Lincoln’s pocket.
Ding…
Ding…
Ding…
It’s the mourning bells.
The fanfare before a charge into battle.
The lilted call of a long-lost love.
A soft, cyan glow, calling him home across the lakes and the rivers, the oceans and the tides.
And as a low groan emits Matthias, as his nails claw into the dirt, Lincoln lifts the golden watch from his pocket, it’s face glowing, humming, louder than death, louder than life–
He knows what he has to do, now.
No matter the cost…
No matter the price.
...
The McQuoid line must be eradicated. ...

Be the same”

You said there was nothing in the world that could stop it
I had a bad feeling”
“I, I loved you in spite of
Deep fears that the world would divide us
So, baby, can we dance
Oh, through an avalanche?
And say, say that we got it
I'm a mess, but I'm the mess that you wanted”
“Yeah, we were dancing
Dancing with our hands tied, hands tied
Yeah, we were dancing
(Ooh, we had our hands tied)
And I had a bad feeling
But we were dancing”
7. Idgie x Ruth (Fried Green Tomatoes)

Stop you putting roots in my dreamland
My house of stone, your ivy grows
And now I'm covered in you”
“What would he do if he found us out?
Crescent moon, coast is clear
Spring breaks loose, but so does fear
He's gonna burn this house to the ground”
“How's one to know?
I'd live and die for moments that we stole
On begged and borrowed time”
“So yeah, it's a fire
It's a goddamn blaze in the dark
And you started it
You started it
So yeah, it's a war
It's the goddamn fight of my life
And you started it
You started it”

But the Pale Woman was wrong. My heart fell as I perceived that Tintaglia still had two defenders. Blind Burrich stood next to the dragon, his folded cloak pressed hard to her neck as he sought to quell her bleeding. The smoking of the fabric made me wonder of what stuff dragon blood was made. Burrich was intent on his task, and Tintaglia's head on her long neck was coiled back protectively toward her body. They both seemed unaware of the lumbering death that made his ponderous way down the hill toward them.
But Swift was not. He stood before her, an ant protecting a castle. The Fool's brightly painted arrow flew from his bow, to splinter uselessly against the stone dragon. Undaunted, he drew another from his quiver, nocked it and drew it back. From some reserve of courage that seemed too large for such a small boy to contain, he took two steps forward, toward the dragon. He let fly again, with as futile a result. Still, he stood his ground as he pulled out yet another arrow. To reach Tintaglia, Rawbread would have to trample him. I saw Swift call a warning back to his father over his shoulder. An arrow was set to Swift's bow. And all I could do was watch helplessly as the stone dragon's relentless gaze fixed on the boy. Abruptly, Rawbread broke into a clumsy gallop. Swift looked up at his death and his mouth stretched wide in a scream that was both terror and defiance. His bow shook in his hands, the head of the gray arrow wobbling wildly, but he stood his ground.
Burrich lifted his head. He turned. Even now, I recall every instant of that moment. I saw him draw breath and heard through the ringing of my ears the deep roar of his outrage that anything would threaten his son.
I had never seen him move so swiftly. He threw himself toward Swift and the dragon, his boots throwing up clumps of snow as he ran. Tintaglia lifted her head slightly, feeble witness to his charge. Then Burrich was between his boy and the dragon, drawing his belt knife as he ran. It was the most ridiculous and the most courageous attack I've ever witnessed. As he sprang to meet the suddenly bewildered dragon's charge, he drew back his knife. I saw the blade splinter as he drove it against the stony flesh. At the same moment, I felt the blast of Wit repel that he leveled at the creature. It was like one of Chade's explosions. It was the fierceness of a stallion defending his herd, the savagery of a wolf or bear that protects its cubs, compounded more from love of what he protected than hatred of what he battled. It was targeted at the dragon, and the prodigious force of that blast dropped the stone beast to his knees.
But as Rawbread fell, a wild flap of his heavy wing swatted Burrich, flinging the man to one side as if he were nothing. His body spun as he flew. "No!" I cried, but it was done. He hit the frozen snow badly, bending like a flung rag doll, and then skidding away across the ice, spinning as he went.

Hills of Shivers and Shadows by Pam Godwin
 5 stars
Tumblr media
I, uh, I am speechless, and I’m going to place all my trust on the authour that this will all work out, because it is definitely looking pretty dismal at the end of this book! This is dark, like, rip open your soul and poke at all the things you keep hidden dark. It is also expert story telling, getting various characters POV’s, and connecting with them, even when you’d rather not. There is no hope, as the characters often say, it’s suck, so while they are often mired in the hopelessness, they carry on. No, they don’t have dreams, they just want to survive. No, they don’t think they’ll even escape from the lives they have, but they are too stubborn to quit. This is book one of a trilogy, so there are still lots of things we don’t know and items to solve are already mounting, but we care about the characters, and need them to move forward, and that, that is why this book is echoing in my thoughts <3

Theory of Relativity- Issue #3
So, I have a new follower and to celebrate, I thought I'd post the next transcript of ToR, completing the introductory trilogy! As you may have noticed, I haven't been posting too often these past few months, and sadly, part of this is due to a lack of direction with this project. I'm satisfied with these first three issues, mind you, and I have about three and a half issues more after this, but I'm just not sure if the story is the best it could be in terms of world building, characterization, setting up stakes and future storylines, etc. Sunk cost fallacy has its grip on me and doesn't want me to throw out years of work, but I don't want to keep going with a project I'm not 100% satisfied with.
So, if it isn't too much of a bother, I'd appreciate if you kind readers would leave a review after reading, highlighting what you liked, what didn't quite work, and what elements you'd want to see elaborated on in future issues. Thanks again for reading!
Page 1
Panel 1
We start right where the last issue left off. The intruder (Silversight) has his back to the camera, head turned away so we can see the side of his face and his disinterested look as he seems ready to leave the room. Davis points at his accusatorily, mouth wide open as he shouts at him, while Sonny looks more confused than anything else.
Davis: Oh, so what you needed was in my friend’s bedroom? Who do you think you are barging in here like this?
Intruder: This book is capable of far more harm than you can imagine. Only a fool or a sadist would want it in his possession.
Panel 2
Very small panel of Sonny’s face.
Sonny: The book…
Panel 3
Close-up of the book Silversight is clutching tightly to his chest. While obscured by his arm, the reader can still see the stylized image of a goat-demon’s face (similar to the villain from the first issue) etched on the cover.
Panel 4
Sepia-toned to denote that this is a flashback: Geena from the first issue telling Aether about the tome in the backroom of the library.
Geena: He was doing something weird in the backroom, chanting in Latin from some spellbook.
Page 2
Panel 1
Shot of Sonny and Davis standing back, Sonny with a revelatory look on his face while Davis grits his teeth, looking like he is ready to lunge forward.
Sonny: That must be the book from the fire last night. Isaac probably brought it back here afterwards. So he is…
Davis: Sonny, your roommate problems can wait. Now, we need to stop this guy.
Panel 2
Shot from behind Davis as he lunges towards Silversight, hand raised almost as though he was going in for a slashing motion. Silversight now cradles the book in one arm nestled under an armpit while his right hand is raised, surrounded in a misty blue aura.
Sonny (off-panel): Davis, wait!
Panel 3
Side view of Silversight unleashing a cone of light blue energy at Davis, who is caught in midstep by the blast and is visibly recoiling from it.
Sound Effects: FREESH!!!
Panel 4
Sonny has his hands raised above his face to shield his eyes from the recent blast of magic and is just now lowering them to reveal a look of terror on his face.
Panel 5
In the background, Sonny looks on in horror at Davis, whose whole body is encased in a thick layer of frosted ice. His face is literally frozen in a shocked look and his arms are raised in a defensive pose.
Sonny: Dear God, what did you do to him?
Page 3
Panel 1
Reverse shot now focusing on Silversight while in the foreground Davis’s frozen outline can still be seen. Silversight’s attention is turned to a trinket he is digging out of his coat, seemingly unperturbed by the fate he inflicted on Davis.
Silversight: Your friend will be fine, trust me. Now, if you don’t mind, I’ll be on my way.
Panel 2
Upward angled shot of Silversight as he gazes at pendant held in his hand, which is surrounded by short, jagged magical lines, giving off the impression that the magic is not working.
Silversight: Hmm, now this is an issue. Ah! Of course, the magic in this tome is too strong. A simple teleportation spell wouldn’t be powerful enough to break it down into energy.
Panel 3
Silversight exits the dorm. Over his shoulder, we can see through the doorway and into the room as a frantic Sonny tries desperately to tend to the frozen Davis.
Silversight: Guess I’m going to have to hoof it.
Panel 4
Establishing shot of the rooftop of one of the lecture halls at the college, with Aether in a landing position.
Panel 5
Aether glances over at an electrical panel lying flat on the roof, at the corner of which rests his over-stuffed backpack.
Page 4
Panel 1
Silversight briskly walks down the concrete sidewalk from the dorm area, on the right are some lecture halls and the left to the student common’s, a grassy area where several other students standing off to the sides give him a curious look. Silversight looks off to the side, realizing that they are whispering about him and is huddling his head into his chest and hugs the book under his arm even tighter.
Co-ed 1: Who is that guy?
Co-ed 2: It’s like Harry Dresden as played by Idris Elba.
Silversight: Coming out here in the day might have been a mistake. No, getting this book back to the Vault couldn’t wait any longer. All the more reason I need to get out of here as soon as possible…
Off-panel: Whoa, Dude!
Panel 2
A young woman on a skateboard crashes into Silversight. Perspective switches to the side to show the brunt of the impact as Silversight is knocked clean backward, his arm that held the spellbook now extended and his grip loosened, and the skater girl slips backwards off of her board.
Sound Effects: SMACK!!
Panel 3
Silversight has sat up, though still is sitting, but has a slightly panicked expression as he notices his arm is now empty. The skater girl is now frantically surveying the site of impact for all the items that spilled from his coat, including several trinkets like the pendant from Page 3, Panel 2. Most importantly, her hand now hovers over the spellbook.
Skater Girl: Oh man, I am so sorry! I misjudged how far apart my classes are, so I only have ten minutes to get across campus and I wasn’t paying attention…
Panel 4
Close-up of the Spellbook as the girl’s hand passes over it.
Skater Girl: Here, let me help you with your… Whoa, what’s this.
Panel 5
In the foreground of the panel, the Skater Girl’s eyes have taken a subtle glassy sheen (implying demonic influence) as her fingers begin to open the book. Behind her Silversight reaches out with one hand, mouth and eyes wide open as he shouts and a blue aura surrounding his extended hand.
Skater Girl: Let me just, take a peak…
Silversight: GET AWAY FROM THAT BOOK!
Page 5
Panel 1
Shot of Aether back on the rooftop rummaging through his backpack, though his head is raised upward, distracted by voices from the campus below him.
Dialogue bubble coming from over the side of the building: Whoa!
Dialogue bubble 2: What did you do to her?
Aether: huh?
Panel 2
The top of Aether’s hood can be seen on the bottom of the panel as he looks down from the rooftop and sees the commotion. Silversight’s hand is still outreached, but his head is turned fretfully as he examines a crowd of students who have begun to congregate around him, though they keep a distance. A few feet in front of him, the skater girl, is steadily getting up after presumably getting knocked over, holding her head, but not visibly injured. Several papers, and the book can be seen scattered messily in the gap between the girl and Silversight, having been knocked loose by the force push.
Someone in the crowd: Who is this guy?
Other crowd member: I knew I should have just gone to UNJ.
Panel 3
Back to facing Aether, who is now hurdling over the ledge of the building. Despite this, he has an irritated expression on his face, like someone who has been called into work on a day off.
Aether: Well, looks like I’ve got one more stop. I’ll just tell Sonny I got caught up in the crowd on my way back from class.
Panel 4
Silversight is gradually standing back up after having scooped up the spellbook. His attention is turned towards Aether, who has just dropped down to face him, only his back and legs visible to the reader.
Aether: Alright, look…
Panel 5
Front facing shot of Aether. Despite the set-up, his posture is lax, arms hanging at his side and a matter of fact expression on his face. Off to the side, a couple members of the crowd lean into the panel to get a look at the two super powered beings getting ready to face off. The skater girl can also be seen behind Aether with a freaked out expression, still prone on her back but scurrying away backwards.
Aether: Just leave the girl alone and get out of here, there doesn’t have to be a…
Panel 6
Simple close-up of Aether’s face, slack-jawed.
Aether: Shit…
Page 6
Panel 1
Silversight now stands fully erect, the book clenched tightly to his chest with his right arm, though the symbol on the cover is clearly visible. He has something of a relieved, amiable look on his face.
Silversight: Works for me. Sorry about the accident, I’ll be a little more careful next time.
Panel 2
Silversight has once again staggered, jaws clenched in tension. His knees are bent and he is begin to double over. His right arm, notably, has dropped straight down and is now straining to keep a grip on the spellbook, which Aether has now made incredibly heavy.
Silversight: Gah!
Panel 3
We view Silversight from behind and from the left side, who has now dropped to his knees fully and struggles to lift is head to look at Aether. On the other side of the panel, Aether now stands more rigidly and extends his left hand, gazing towards Silversight intensely, but not directly at him. Skater girl has gotten to her feet again, and looks on from behind Aether with a “What the Hell?” expression on her face, as do several bystanders off to the side.
Aether: Slight change of plans. I’m going to need that book back.
Silversight: Erg… I’m afraid that I can’t oblige…
Aether: Don’t worry, I’ll just grab it myself.
Panel 4
We now see Silversight from the front. Aether is now using his gravity powers to pull the spellbook towards him, shown by Silversight seemingly stretching out his right hand with the book in tow, the in reality his arm is straining to keep it pulled towards him. He grits his teeth in determination, and a blue aura surrounds the book and trails down his arm.
Silversight: So, you must be the one the blonde kid was talking about. I’m not sure what kind of sorcery this is, but I can still use it…
Panel 5
Silversight releases the aura of blue energy into a concentrated beam. He is no longer straining under the force of Aether’s gravity powers and stands powerfully, legs staggered and the spellbook gripped comfortably in his hand as he dispenses the blast of magic. His coat and hair ripple from the release of energy.
Page 7
Panel 1
Aether takes the beam of energy and is knocked flat on his back. Half the crowd in the background look on in shock while the others have begun to turn and run off.
Aether: Guh!
Panel 2
Aether is sitting up, rubbing his gloved fist against his chin defensively as he grumbles to himself. Behind him, the skater girl has ran off, her board under her armpit and looking over her shoulder with a fretful look.
Aether: Ugh, another magic user. You know, some of us actually respect the laws of nature…
Panel 3
Camera is angled from over Aether’s shoulder as he leaps into the air, looking down on Silversight who stares back at him.
Aether: Alright, let’s see
Panel 4
Aether is now several feet in the air and has a fairly wide view of the campus, but laid with a slightly darker filter to symbolize this is Aether’s first-person perspective. Silversight is positioned in the center of the panel while the lecture hall Aether stood upon from a few panels earlier stands to the right, both emanating the gravitational waves used in the fight with the fire demon from Issue 1. A dotted line stretches from the bottom center of the panel to Silversight, and another one branches off a few inches down the first line towards the building to the right, before taking a sharp turn to connect with the other line at Silversight’s chest.
Panel 5
Aether leans forward, pulling his arms back to his sides as he begins to hurl himself at Silversight.
Aether (unconnected thought bubble): I need to get in close and get that book. I’ll pull into his gravity well, and if he tries to zap me again, I’ll pull myself in to the right and then snap back…
Page 8
Panel 1
Silversight calmly raises his hand upwards, a thin trail of blue energy gathering around his hand from up above presumably from Aether.
Panel 2
Aether, still airborne, falters, his arms beginning to take defensive positions as he prepares to take a fall.
Aether: Wha… how am I falling? I should be light enough to…
Panel 3
Aether falls to the ground with a heavy thud, though he managed to close the distance between him and Silversight by about half. Silversight looks down as the hero attempts to prop himself off the ground with one arm, a stern warning upon his face.
Silversight: I’d recommend you stay down. It’ll be easier that way.
Aether: You think I do this crap because it’s easy?
Panel 4
Silversight raises his hand as it once again glows with blue energy.
Silversight: Hard way it is then…
Panel 5
Aether pushes himself off the ground and a few feet into the air to avoid the blast of energy which illuminates the panel with a bright blue flash.
Sound Effects: CRUSH!!!
Page 9
Panel 1
Close-up of a shower head spraying water at a curve suggesting a fairly weak flow.
Panel 2
Sonny has positioned a still-frozen Davis in the shower/bathtub of his fairly cramped bathroom and is running the water over his body to thaw him. Because his body is still (literally) frozen in a defensive position, he lays awkwardly in the tube at an angle, his outwardly flared elbows resting on the edges. Sonny is testing the temperature of the water with an upturned hand and looks over Davis with a frustrated look.
Sonny: Come on, I know the water pressure in this building sucks, but heat up!
Panel 3
Sonny recoils at the sudden blaring of his smart phone in his pocket. His scowl deepens as he reaches into his pocket violently.
Sound effect from Sonny’s pocket: REEEEE!! REEEEEE!! BRRRRRRRRRRR!!
Sonny: Ah, great! Not sure if you can hear anything in there, Davis, but just let me take care of this.
Panel 4
Close-up of Sonny’s face as he gazes at the screen of his phone with a shocked expression.
Sonny: Oh, God.
Panel 5
Reverse angle shot of the smart phone’s default message screen depicting an emergency broadcast alert: “Superhuman confrontation erupts in commons area. All students are recommended to seek shelter and remain indoors until further notice.”
Sonny: Don’t tell me…
Panel 6
Smart phone now depicts a screenshot of a Facebook-esque social media site depicting an image of Silversight and Aether squaring off with the caption: “It’s official: we live in the DCU.”
Page 10
Panel 1
Sonny looks off to the side with a worried expression as he lowers his phone, Davis still visible in the background.
Sonny: Dammit, Isaac…
Panel 2
Aether is hunkered over in the middle of the grassy fields of the common, his posture suggesting he just got out of a sideways roll out of the way of another blue energy blast from Silversight, which just connected to a patch of grass only a few feet behind him.
Panel 3
Shot from behind Aether, who has stood up slightly but still looks tense and ready to move out of the way at any moment. More emphasis lies on Silversight, who still stands with confidence as he holds up a hand, small wisps of blue aura dissipating into the air.
Silversight: So tell me, sorcerer, do you still wish to test your skills against me?
Aether: Err. Give me a minute and I’ll come up with something.
Silversight: Oh, trust me, I can give you all the time you need…
Panel 4
Silversight raises his hand once more as he unleashes the cone of frost that he used against Davis earlier in the issue. Aether leaps into the air and leans backwards as the blast focuses on the patch of grass he once stood on.
Silversight: … AS YOU FREEZE!
Panel 5
Aether lands a few feet back from the point of impact, as shown by his scarf still fluttering above him after he landed. He looks at the patch of now-icy grass with a flustered curl to his mouth.
Aether: Great… now I have ice attacks I need to worry about.
Page 11
Panel 1
Silversight unleashes another blast of energy at Aether. Aether pulls himself away from the tube shaped blast of energy using the gravitational pull of the building, it looking like something is violently tugging him away.
Silversight: Nah, I prefer to stick with the classics!
Panel 2
Close-up of Aether’s face. His posture still looks weird from him “falling” towards the upright building, and he grits his teeth in deep thought. The right side of the panel is still illuminated from the latest energy blast.
Aether (thought bubble): I hate having to fight in open areas. Nothing to use against him unless I’m willing to knock this building over on him, but that seems a bit overkill. No wait…
Panel 3
Shot of a few notebooks lying on the walkway a few feet back.
Aether: What a shame; skater girl forgot her homework.
Panel 4
Focus returns to Aether, who is clenching his jaw in frustration.
Aether (thought bubble): Yeah, sure. With everything I’ve thrown at him, all it will take to beat him are a couple notebooks. Still, I need to get in close if I’m going to stop him, and I need an opening.
Panel 5
Aether stands off to the side with his arm stretched back while the aforementioned books and papers fly towards the screen presumably towards Silversight.
Aether: ERGH!
Page 12
Panel 1
Silversight stands with an almost insulted expression on his face while the books Aether sent flying at him spaced around the edges of the panel in a circle, emanating dramatic rush lines to denote high speed.
Silversight: Seriously, you’re attacking me with clutter?
Panel 2
Side shot of Silversight as he extends a hand at the books being pulled at him, now enveloped in a thin cloud of blue energy that extends to said hand. Some of the heavier textbooks are now beginning to fall out of the air.
Silversight: Such a shame, I was expecting so much more from you.
Panel 3
Silversight fires another blast of blue energy at Aether, though this one is far less impressive than the last few he had shot at him. Aether has gotten a few steps closer to Silversight, but has once again had to pull himself closer to the building. Aether watches intently as the wispy shot of blue energy passes his torso with a thoughtful look.
Aether (thought bubble): Speaking of expecting more, not much of a blast. Could it be that he’s running out of energy? No wait…
Panel 4
Ground level shot of the books lying on the ground just a few feet from Silversight, Aether can be seen in the background looking at them with an epiphany on his face.
Aether (thought bubble): Those books… he pulled them out of the air… just like he did to me at the beginning of our fight.
Panel 5
Aether takes up the front of the panel and we see Silversight in the background over his shoulder, taking a defensive position. The two are about 10 feet apart, the closest they’ve been since the beginning of their skirmish. Aether purses his lips in thought as he contemplates his next move.
Aether (thought bubble): That’s it, isn’t it? His magic… he’s somehow taking my potential energy and firing it back at me. And the frozen grass… he was taking the thermal energy from there.
Page 13
Panel 1
Shot from behind Silversight as he bunches his shoulders together in anticipation of Aether’s approach, the hero rushing straight at him with long, light strides and an arm recoiling back.
Silversight: Heh, what sort of strategy is this now, rushing right at me the minute I stop firing?
Panel 2
Close-up of Silversight raising his hand to absorb energy again, and we see him snarl slightly, as though cursing himself.
Silversight (thought bubble): If I had the energy, I’d blast him point blank and be done with this. No matter, I can handle a close-range scuffle; take the energy from his strike and give it right back to him
Panel 3
Shot from over Silversight’s shoulder as Aether has gotten up to him and his fist is only inches away from Silversight’s upraised hand.
Silversight (thought bubble): The perfect way to put this brute down.
Panel 4
Close-up of Silversight’s face as it recoils back with a shocked expression. Near the bottom edge of the panel we can see ridges of his fingers as he catches Aether’s fist in his hand.
Silversight: What?
Panel 5
Aether smiles cockily despite his fist being still being clenched by Silversight. From his hand, the smallest light blue vapor emanates. More importantly, his opposite shoulder and fist is shifted backwards as though gearing up for another punch.
Silversight (from off panel): I…I’m barely getting any energy from him. And his fist, it’s almost as light as a feather.
Aether: Energy’s a function of mass. I made myself as light as a feather, you have nothing to feed off of for a counter attack.
Page 14
Panel 1
Aether leans in with all his weight, legs staggered with one in front of the other, for a follow-up punch clear across Silversight’s face. The muscles in the back of his legs strain and his head hangs down slightly to demonstrate that he has made himself incredibly heavy. Silversight is knocked over and his sunglasses are now slightly askew, though he is still clutching onto the spellbook.
Aether: That feint got me in close. Better wrap this up.
Panel 2
Aether brings up his back leg to ram his knee into Silversight’s stomach, lifting him slightly off the ground. Aether is clenching his jaw and is still hunched over to emphasize how much effort it takes to lift his leg. This blow is powerful enough to dislodge both his sunglasses and make him drop the spellbook.
Panel 3
Close-up of the spellbook just before it drops to the ground. The top left corner points upward as though held up by a string tied to that edge, indicating that Aether has caught it in his gravitational field.
Panel 4
Aether has reeled back, his posture now more relaxed as he is slowly readjusting to his normal weight, though his mask and cape look slightly disheveled. His mouth appears to be panting slightly but still looks to be smiling, his arm reaching out to grab the book just as it floats up to him.
Aether: Got it…
Panel 5
Silversight is struggling to pull himself up, one hand on a bended knee while his other his raised to where Aether first punched him. His gaping mouth and hunched over shoulders suggest he is breathing heavily, you would too if you got punched in the gut as hard as he was.
Silversight: Don’t think you’ve won just yet. You’re a child, not even graduated. I’ve been merciful with you up until now, but believe me, you’ve seen only a fraction of what I am capable of…
Page 14
Panel 1
Shot goes back to Aether, now nestling the book under his armpit with relaxed posture.
Aether: You’re not getting this book back. It’s the first day of class and I’d rather not have to fight another fire demon.
Panel 2
Close-up of Silversight, whose face has softened into a look of confusion, almost embarrassment. This shot should also focus on the fact that, as his name implies, his eyes are a crystalline silver.
Silversight: …you… think I want to use the book?
Panel 3
Silversight, viewed from behind slowly rises to his feet, and over his shoulder, we see Aether looking almost bored as his body turns rigid.
Silversight: Hold yourself! I believe there has been a misunderstanding.
Aether: Oh, now you’re willing to talk things out.
Panel 4
Silversight raises a hand to his breast, as a man of dignity would do when introducing himself, though he still seems off balance from his fight with Aether.
Silversight: My name is Alexander D’argentoeil. As you witnessed, I am a practitioner of magic, but I believe you may have misinterpreted my intentions.
Page 15
Panel 1
Sepia toned imagine spot of Silversight standing in a dim, windowless room over a museum like display case adorned with mystical runes. Inside the case sit a book with a demonic looking leathery face (the Necronomicon) a ring with curvy letters inscribed on it (the One Ring) and a jewel incrusted left hand (the Hand of Kwll).
Silversight (off-screen): I am tasked by a higher power with monitoring this region of the country for magical relics. Powers that could spell devastation if they fell into the wrong hands.
Panel 2
(Still Sepia toned) Silversight is seen stepping out from behind a giant banner with an African design, literally stepping through the wall behind it, the surface rippling like water as his arm and legs step through to the other side, the wall being an magical illusion and implied to lead to the magical store room from the last panel. A manner of random vases, sculptures and pieces of rustic furniture litter the room he has entered suggesting that this would otherwise be a normal antique store he uses as a cover. In a bit of comic relief, an old white lady with glasses is scrutinizing a vase intently, completely ignorant of Silversight’ reality bending feat.
Silversight (off-screen): This morning, I was alerted to the re-emergence of a horrible tome thought lost to modern man, at a…college in New Jersey of all places.
Panel 3
We return to the present, a shot of Aether with his arm’s sternly folded over his chest and an unimpressed look upon his face, the spellbook loosely grasped in one hand.
Aether: And so you just broke into some kid’s apartment to get it back?
Panel 4
Previous panel zooms out slightly to show Silversight now in frame, looking off to the side with a bit of embarrassment.
Silversight: Yes, well, when I arrived here I sensed the book in a dormitory. The two young men in the room mentioned that a third person must have brought it home and I assumed him to be the summoner, and when you recognized the book, I assumed him to be you.
Page 16
Panel 1
Close-up of Aether, clenching his jaw as though he was just struck in the chest upon hearing someone guess his identity. As established earlier, Isaac doesn’t like people getting to close to him, so hearing someone deduce his secret identity is mortifying to him.
Silversight (from off screen): I believe they said his name was Isaac…
Aether: Sonny… dammit.
Panel 2
Silversight and Aether stand on opposite sides of the panel. Silversight’s posture is upright, conveying dominance in the conversation as Aether has become uncomfortable, looking straight on at him. Now Aether is the one avoiding eye contact, looking off to the side.
Aether: You assumed wrong. The summoner… well, I found what was left of him after I stopped the demon.
Silversight: Ugh, well, as is the price of dealing with the dark arts.
Panel 3
Aether turns his side with the spellbook away from Silversight, sheltering it away as his expression once again turns defensive.
Aether: Still, why should I trust this book with you? He may have fried himself, but someone with your power could probably do some real damage.
Panel 4
Silversight smiles slightly at Aether as though he took his complement as sincere, tucking his chin into his neck.
Silversight: I just said, using the book requires a great sacrifice of flesh for its power. It’s great, but unwieldy. I, however, already have all the power that I need. For example…
Panel 5
Silversight extends his hand to his right side and launches a blast of yellow energy. Aether snaps his head in that direction, snarling as though he expects this to be another attack.
Page 17
Panel 1
The yellow energy strikes Silversight’s sunglasses, lying on the ground and having its left earpiece snapped in half from where Aether punched him in the face. They are now elevated in the air slightly.
Panel 2
Worm’s eye view of where the glasses once sat, but now only sit a small, yellow star burst of energy. Aether and Silversight are seen in the background, Aether looking confused from the random, petty destruction, the Silversight maintains his cool composure, a trail of energy flowing back from the starburst and curving back towards his face.
Aether: More energy blasts?
Silversight: Not quite…
Panel 3
Over Aether’s shoulder, we see Silversight smiling smugly as the sunglasses reform right on his face, fully repaired, still surrounding by the slightest, dying flare of yellow energy.
Aether: Well, of course it’s easy when you don’t have any framework to operate in…
Silversight: I broke them down to their basic building blocks, and used the released energy to reassemble them. Conserved both matter and energy.
Panel 4
Silversight walks closer towards Aether confidently, though Aether is still apprehensive to the magic user, feeling insulted by his lecture.
Silversight: No one is truly limited by a framework if they understand it enough…
Aether: Yeah, sure, and you think the book is safer with you?
Panel 5
Close-up of Silversight, hat tipped down slightly over his brow to give him a mysterious edge.
Silversight: I have experience guarding magical items, and the resources…
Page 18
Panel 1
Close-up of Aether, sneering slightly at yet another jab at him.
Silversight (offscreen): If nothing else, it’d more secure than under a sweaty futon…
Aether: Look, I only had a few minutes to stash it before my roommate came home.
Panel 2
Silversight and Aether standing together, the former now holding a small card pinched between two fingers that he is now handing to Aether.
Silversight: Regardless, here’s my card if you still don’t trust me. You did well for a novice magic user, I might be calling you in the future.
Panel 3
Close-up of Aether as he half-heartedly takes the card, avoiding eye contact with Silversight.
Aether: It’s not magic, and… I’d rather not inconvenience you.
Panel 4
Silversight and Aether go their separate ways, Aether walking towards the reader and Silversight with his back towards the reader. Aether grimaces, as though he takes Silversight’s comment as a threat to his wellbeing.
Silversight: Very well, I have other ways of contacting you if need be.
Aether: *hrmm*
Panel 5
Aether is now back in his street clothes as Isaac Rozanski, walking down the hallway to his and Sonny’s dorm, a hand squeezing the strap of his backpack. His posture suggests he is walking quickly, not running, and he looks on edge, giving the vibe of a teenager trying to sneak back into the house after curfew.
Page 19
Panel 1
Isaac passes through the door to his dorm, the door opened just slightly enough for him to pass through, and still covering most of his body.
Sonny (off-panel): Finally back?
Panel 2
Sonny stands in the dining area of the dorm, which is just as trashed as it was at the beginning of the issue. He stands with his arms crossed and a stern look on his face, as if to demand Isaac explain himself.
Sonny: Care to explain what happened here?
Panel 3
Close-up of Isaac sighing, eyes closed with a defeated look on his face as he drops his backpack.
Isaac (thought bubble): Come on, just like you rehearsed on the way over…
Panel 4
Isaac stands look aimlessly at the floor, while in the foreground of the panel Sonny stands, still imposingly.
Isaac: Look, I know this sounds crazy, but when I came home from the party last night, I found this weird book lying on the ground. I tried to find who dropped it, and I saw some weird guy in purple flying above me.
Panel 5
Isaac and Sonny stand on either side of the panel. Sonny now has dropped his intimidating posture and now appears to be sighing gently, shoulders drooping. Isaac is still keeping up his naïve act.
Sonny: Isaac…
Isaac: Look, I know it was stupid to just pick up some strange book…
Page 20
Panel 1
Sonny speaks to Isaac, the camera rotating so he is facing us, and Isaac’s back takes up the foreground of the shot.
Sonny: No, I mean are you really going to keep acting like you aren’t Aether?
Isaac: Guess it is kind of a lost cause at this point.
Panel 2
Isaac steps past Sonny into the center of the dining room, casually taking in all the mess while Sonny still keeps up the conversation.
Sonny: I… I still don’t know what to say. I mean, you have superpowers? You fight monsters? Like… why didn’t you tell me?
Isaac: That’s sort of how it works. They’re called secret identities because you don’t tell anybody.
Panel 3
Isaac’s face, angled downwards, takes up the front of the panel while Sonny continues in the background. Arm flung out to the side in exasperation.
Sonny: Yeah, well, thanks to your little secret a wizard trashed our dorm and turned Davis into a human popsicle!
Panel 4
First person shot from Isaac’s point of view as he opens a drawer and drops Silversight’s card into a cluttered drawer. Said card reads “Curious Curios” and looks like a typical small business card, complete with 555 phone number.
Isaac: I think that says more about our visitor than me. Guy was insufferable...
Panel 5
Isaac turns away from the drawer, still wearing a distracted look while Sonny continues to erratically grill him, a hand held up to his forehead as he tries to process everything.
Sonny: Are you even listening? I don’t even know how Davis survived getting frozen, but it could have been a lot worse.
Isaac: Well, what was I supposed to do? The tome was too unpredictable to just destroy, and I didn’t know what to do with it.
Page 21
Panel 1
Sonny steps in front of Isaac, his face melting into a more concerned, “I’m here for you” look.
Sonny: Here’s a thought: maybe you could have told me? Let me know before you hid a dangerous artifact in our home?
Panel 2
Isaac turns his side to Sonny, looking away with a guilty expression, trying to turn Sonny away. Sonny has a slightly more judgmental look than last panel, reflecting his sardonic response.
Isaac: I’ve been keeping this thing a secret from you for two years, and things have worked out just fine.
Sonny: Yeah, until they didn’t!
Panel 3
Isaac turns further away from Sonny defensively, gritting his teeth a little and tensing up. Sonny leans in a little closer, reaching out slightly with one hand.
Isaac: Look, I’m… sorry for what happened to you guys today, but it’s not like telling you would have made a difference. I was too busy helping a chatty window washer from falling to his death to protect your friend from our visitor
Sonny: It’s not just the book! I mean, did you ever consider things could have been easier if I knew about Aether?
Panel 4
Isaac turns back to Sonny with an unamused look, but Sonny still seems sincere.
Isaac: Are you asking if you could be my sidekick?
Sonny: I’m saying you don’t have to lock me out. I get it. You’ve been playing distant all this time because you were afraid I’d freak out, or a villain would come after your loved ones, or some other cliché.
Panel 5
Close-up of Isaac’s face in a thousand yard stare as he listens intently to Sonny, though he also furrows his brow a bit in discomfort and looks downward. This is a sign that the idea of sharing secrets with Sonny is a scary thought for him and foreshadows is character’s theme of struggling to let people in.
Sonny: But after today, I think it would be easier for both of us if you let me in on these things in the future. What do you say?
Page 22
Panel 1
Isaac once again turns his side to Sonny, shoulders huddled together defensively, again conveying the idea that he isn’t pleased with this arrangement. Sonny, however, smiles, thinking that he’s starting to get through to the young man.
Isaac: I don’t think I really have a choice.
Sonny: Yeah, see, this is good. No more secrets between us.
Panel 2
Isaac turns back to Sonny with a stern, almost threatening look on his face. In contrast, Sonny gazes off panel awkwardly, setting up a gag in the next panel.
Isaac: Still, you have to promise me you aren’t going to tell anyone. The fact that I’m Aether, everything that comes with it, doesn’t leave this dorm.
Davis (off-panel): N-N-N-No friggin’ way.
Panel 3
Davis has just stepped out of the bathroom, his whole body wrapped in a large bath towel and his hair and body dripping wet. He is hunched over and shivering from just being frozen, and his face, though tired in the eyes, is trying to smile gleefully as he discovers Isaac’s secret.
Davis: You’re A-Aether. D-D-Dude… I’ve got so many questions…
Panel 4
Camera pans back to Isaac and Sonny. Isaac looks back over his shoulder at where Davis would be standing with an irritated snarl to his mouth. Sonny is biting his lip, embarrassed that he couldn’t keep anyone from finding out Isaac’s secret for three minutes.
Isaac: I really should have worded that better…
Page 23
Panel 1
Isaac is now standing next to Davis, sternly looking down at him while he pulls his backpack up, Davis’ eyes flaring out as he’s taken aback by Isaac’s threat.
Isaac: Everything I told Sonny applies to you, too. Tell no one.
Panel 2
Isaac now stands in the door frame of his and Sonny’s dorm, one arm grasping the door itself while Davis peers at him.
Isaac: Now if you excuse me, I… have a lot of homework to do.
Panel 3
The door is now slammed shut, with an impact starburst effect all along the door frame to emphasize it. Sonny has now entered the panel from the right and looks at the door being slammed along with Davis.
Sound Effects: THUMP!
Panel 4
Camera flips so that we see the entrance to the bathroom in the background instead of the bedroom, and Sonny is on the left with Davis on the right. Sonny turns his attention to Davis, who tightens his towel around himself.
Sonny: So, you’re OK? It’s not every day that someone gets frozen solid.
Davis: Well, I’ve yet to hear back from my toes and I’ve got frost bite in places I didn’t even know I had, but overall I’m good.
Panel 5
Sonny shrugs his shoulders and looks up and to the side, Davis rolls his eyes jokingly.
Sonny: Yeah, sorry I kind of left you there, but seriously, this is a lot to take in. On one hand, I’m glad I got Isaac to finally open up, but I didn’t think it would involve him fighting demons and wizards.
Davis: Yeah, my worst roommate issue is him bringing his girlfriend over without a heads-up.
Page 24
Panel 1
Sonny reaches behind his head and rubbing it while Davis stands up a bit straighter.
Sonny: I’m serious! Living with Isaac these past few years has been… odd. It’s like he’s there, but just sort of hangs in the background, us barely even acknowledging me. I wanted things to be less awkward between the two of us, but now this…
Davis: Look I don’t know what to say either. Still…
Panel 2
Close-up of Sonny as he looks over to Davis with a more relaxed, contemplative look.
Davis (off-screen): You’ve got to keep in mind how weird this is for Isaac. I mean, he’s the one who has to face all this crap head on, probably for even longer than you’ve known him. So can you blame him for being a little dodgy about it?
Sonny: Yeah, I guess you’re right.
Panel 3
Camera shows both Davis and Sonny. Davis looks to the right in an almost triumphant, forward looking posture, signifying the beginning of the story proper and the future adventures awaiting our three characters. Davis bears the slightest smile, while Sonny looks after him with a confused look.
Davis: Though you got one thing right: things are going to get a lot more crazy around here. After all…
Panel 4
Shot of Isaac sitting alone in his corner of the bedroom, special emphasis on its bare walls. He sits with a text book resting in his lap as he pours over the notes with a listless expression on his face. His backpack lies on the ground and his wadded up Aether costume spills out unceremoniously on the ground, symbolizing his dual identity.
Dialogue box 1: …the superman is real…
Dialogue box 2: …and he’s from New Jersey.
