So I was playing Akinator at my NYE party

And everyone was trying to see if they could get Akinator to not guess their person. So I thought, “I got a great one! I’m going to win!” And so when answering the questions I was so sure the whole way through that the game wouldn’t get it right because it’s such a small series. And then...

It actually got Arsinoe right! I’m shook.

So of course then I’m trying to figure out what other obscure characters it knows.

It guessed Raisa, Han Alister from the Seven Realms. It didn’t guess any of the Shattered Realms series.

And then I played for this character.

And it got her right! I can’t believe it!

Second series down! (8 out of 35)

When I first saw the cover and read the synopsis for Flamecaster, I was SO excited. The Seven Realms, even after ten years, is still one of my favorite series. To be gifted with a whole sequel series - to get even just a little more story about these characters I’ve grown to love, to get to meet their kids and get to explore the Realms more - I was elated!

Within the last year or two, I made the decision to not read a series before the last book was released. Flamecaster came out before I made that choice (and may have been one of the books to push me to it), so the first time I read it, I was sitting in the doctor’s office waiting to be seen. Three chapters in, and hit me right in the feels: major character death. I took a few days before diving back into the book, but once I did, I enjoyed it, and it made me look forward to the rest of the series.

Fast forward to 2020 (*makes sign of the cross*). I’m finally ready to read the whole series together. I reread TSR to re-familiarize myself with the story, loved it just as much as the first time around. When I was ready to pick up Flamecaster again, I was prepared to have my heart broken again. I was ready to git ‘er done!

So, Flamecaster, right? GOOD first book. A wizard healer who’s also an assassin? Oxymoronic, but I’m here for it. A rebellious young woman who likes to blow shit up, has a mysterious magemark on the back of her neck that gives her some cool powers, AND is fighting for her home against a tyrannical king? Tell me more! Bloodsucking, wizard-hunting priests? Gross, but intriguing. DRAGONS?!?! Honestly, could take them or leave them, but cool integration into the canon.

But as I got into the next books in the series, especially the last one, there were a lot of moments where I felt like I was just reading to get through the story, not really soaking anything in, not really enjoying the content. For example, Evan, the protagonist of Stormcaster, basically lives on a boat. Obviously, from his POV, gonna be a lot of boat stuff, but it felt kind of excessive at points. Like so much stuff about masts and riggings and sails and mizzens. I got lost a few times. Additionally, the overarching plotline revolves around a twenty-five-year long war, so there’s a lot of talk about battle strategies and tactics and stuff my brain just kinda glossed over.

Mostly though, I felt like there was a lot of exposition or build up that lead to one of the quickest resolutions I’ve ever encountered. This seemingly all-powerful antagonist introduced in book one is gone in a matter of seconds in the penultimate chapter of the last book and that’s it. No epic battle. No one fighting for their lives. Just here one second, gone the next. Arguably, could be comical but was more disappointing.

The Shattered Realms is beautifully written. Vivid imagery. Great example of world building. A variety of well-crafted characters. I’m always down for smart, strong, badass women, and Alyssa Gray is someone I should aspire to be. Again: dragons, named Splash and Slayer and Goat who were loyal and funny and taunting of 'puny humans'. There was espionage and deceit, wartime love and unlikely newfound friendships, family reunions and the loss of loved ones in more ways than one.

Overall, I’m glad I read it, and I did enjoy what I read. I’m glad I got to meet the kids and get conclusions to plot points left open in the first series. However, not sure if I’ll be picking it back up anytime soon. 3.5 out of 5.

7 Favorite headcanon trope/idea? (Your own or someone else’s) with desvan please!!

My favorite head canon for them is that Evan is basically super clingy. Like he’ll just randomly sit in Destin’s lap, or keep any sort of physical connection with him. I just find it so soft, and I love the image of Destin carding his fingers through Evan’s hair... 🥺 I just have some feelings.

Shattered Realms - Desvan headcanons (spoilers for Deathcaster!)

I may or may not have written this list of headcanons while I was crying about how much I love Destin and Evan, so hopefully these aren’t too awful (especially since I’m planning on turning some of these into short fics at some point)

Destin using his dance skills he learnt in Ardenscourt to teach Evan how to dance before Lyss and Hal’s wedding, as Evan never learnt how to dance (since people generally don’t invite notorious pirates to their social events, unsurprisingly)

As it turns out, Evan is absolutely horrible at formal dancing, as he’s far too energetic, even though he refuses to admit that he can’t dance very well

Destin constantly teases Evan about his awful dancing, but Destin secretly loves it when they dance together, even when Evan steps on his feet

Destin is asexual, and while Evan didn’t completely understand at first, they eventually figure out what works for both of them in their relationship

Evan loves it when Destin holds his face gently. He’ll close his eyes and smile as he leans into Destin’s hand, which Destin thinks is the cutest thing ever

Evan and Destin go sailing on Destiny as soon as possible once they return to Tarvos

While they’re sailing, Evan notices that Destin is tearing up, which immediately causes him to panic because he’s never seen Destin cry before. Destin tells him that it’s because he’d dreamed of returning to Tarvos with Evan for years, but he hadn’t thought that it would really happen

Evan absolutely refuses to admit that Destiny is named after Destin, no matter how many times Destin tries to get him to admit it

Although their relationship starts off slightly awkward, since neither of them knew how to be romantic around each other (due to them never properly dating before being separated for years), they immediately start sharing a bed because neither of them want to be separated for any longer than they have to be, since they’d spent so much time apart already

Evan usually wakes up before Destin, since Destin is used to staying up late to do spymaster stuff (like sneaking into people’s bedrooms and beating them up). Evan will simply stare at Destin and think about how happy he is, now that Destin’s with him again

At first, Destin is unsure how to act around Evan during the post-Deathcaster party since the others are around, but eventually he lets his guard down and lets himself smile and joke around with Evan. The others are very taken aback yet pleased to see Destin, the intimidating Ardenine spymaster, actually smiling and laughing for once

Destin spooning Evan and kissing the magemark on the back of his neck

Destin occasionally having nightmares about his father hurting him or Evan, and Evan calming him down after every nightmare

Evan loving that Destin is taller than him, even though Destin constantly makes fun of him for being the shorter one

Destin taking Evan’s last name as a final ‘screw-you’ to Marin Karn

Destin hesitating when Evan tells him he wants to adopt, because even though Destin wants a child with Evan too, he’s terrified that he’ll be a monstrous father like Marin Karn was to him

Evan eventually convincing him that he’ll never be anything like Marin Karn, so they adopt a little girl who was living on the streets of Tarvos, who then grows up to be a badass pirate
