I’ve always enjoyed using my creativity way more than I enjoy crunching numbers or writing chemical formulas. Unfortunately, the creative space is one that is often looked down on and not taken seriously. I tried to hide my true interests and passion for the longest time, for fear of not being accepted. But I learned the hard way, that looking for acceptance was always going to keep me inside a box, and never allow me to fully pursue what I really love to do. So I’ve chosen to stop caring about what people think about me, and color outside the lines, and I’m loving every single bit of it, because all talent is God given, and should be used for His glory. Timely Message
Took an afternoon break from responsibilities around 4pm today. Robin had gotten finished for the day with her at home teaching and I had just wrapped up a few calls for the day. Since we are both at home like the majority, it was easy for us to meet in our living room and sit on the couch and take a deep breath. We briefly discussed dinner, for about 3 seconds, and her attention quickly reverted to, “can we start watching Ozarks?” For those of you that don’t know, this is the NetFlix show that is gaining much traction and something I have been hearing frequently about in my house, and from many others.” Well, I gave in and we watched the first 2 episodes and yes, I am hooked. Definitely will be binging this over the next few weeks 😊. We never did decide on dinner and after a family discussion I went back to my office, where I find myself now, writing this!
I checked some emails and wanted to write something today; didn’t know if I would to a Journal Journey, write about Ozarks (kidding 😊), or just let something fly off the cuff, so I started reviewing my manifest and came across this nugget:
“Normal is not something to aspire to be, it is something to get away from.” – Jodie Foster
How about that for timing? “Normal” – I have been hearing that word very often in the last month and there are so many pundits talking about when, how, and if, big if, we will ever get back to a normal. I’ve used it a few times myself and was stuck on this “finding our new normal” when we moved out here almost 2 years ago. I was writing and talking about that concept for months. Now, globally, we find ourselves in abnormal circumstances and things are certainly not ideal.
But, are we chasing the wrong carrot with trying to revert to “our normal?”
We will all experience loss in this scenario. Yes, we will ALL lose something at all different extremes. Some much more tragic than others unfortunately. Therefore, I don’t believe any of us will get to our normal. Sure, I do think that there are areas out there around the world that will have a very small impact and likely could go right back to the way live was before this pandemic started. I some of those circumstances and those folks, that may be wonderful.
But should we all be wanting and trying to get to that previous state?
As I went further through my notes, I came across these next few excepts from Joshua Medcalf’s book Hustle.
“Lack produces certain things comfortability never will.” – I think it is safe to say that we are all, in some way, feeling uncomfortable; hell, just take a trip to the grocery store and shit just ain’t ideal. I try to joke to lighten the mood but it’s true, and if someone coughs or sneezes while you are there; look out. I sneezed at the store last week and looked around just to make sure there was no one coming to tackle me or other running for the hills 😊. I think the important word there is “lack.” As I mentioned above, we are all, in some way, losing something through this experience. Therefore, there is an emptiness………maybe too strong of a word but I think appropriate in many cases, but we can use, there is a lack of something; something is missing now, has been, or will be? This lack can be experienced on an individual basis or large scale. Simple example is, as we’ve all been hearing in the media, lack of medical masks around the world. Having this lack of masks globally got many, many uncomfortable and fearful, rightfully so in many cases. However, this fear, or lack if you will, produce an incredibly level of creative, generosity, & resourcefulness around the WORLD!! People donating masks that they have made by hand, others making masks out of scarfs, bandana’s, shirtsleeves, whatever they can find, to protect themselves……TO PROTECT EACH OTHER!!! My guess, there is likely going to be some new inventions and business that are born because of this creativity and resourcefulness.
Wherever we may be in our lives, on our journeys, we have all, at many, many times throughout our travels have been pushed out of our comfort zone. Those situations usually surface when we are lacking something. It could be a job, money, a partner, love, some type of skill and when we have that lack, when situation isn’t ideal, we…………that’s right, don’t feel “normal.” Those terms all kind of go hand in hand together don’t they 😊!!! I know for me, in those situations, I began to feel fear. Fear that I am not in control; fear that I may fail!! But look back on your life and the many times you were in that spot, what happened? What did you do? I am pretty confident you figured it out and got yourself through it!!! I am also sure that the growth you experienced through it enabled you to develop that new skill needed to become a bit more comfortable that next time you didn’t feel so “normal.”
We are much stronger and more creative when we are called to be so let ourselves have that!!!
