Hii! when I read your post about bg3 and what could be better, it’s like you I’ve read everything on my mind. I love this game, it’s an absolute masterpiece, that’s an undeniable truth. I desperately wanted sth like this after I fell in love with DA games. the minute I knew I can romance Astarion I jumped at the chance - because LOOK AT HIM!! and they’ve given him the BEST voice actor, the BEST character backstory- better and richer than any of the DA characters had. he feels alive, everything in his behaviour and motivations makes sense, the whole breaking the cycle of abuse is incredibly deep. And really makes me crave for more..more party banter, more things to talk about overall. there are certain shining moments between him and Shadowheart, moments where she teases him or is curious about certain things. YES GIVE ME MORE OF THIS overall with all the companions!
100% agree about how it is frustrating that companion reactions get overridden. I romanced Asta and wanted to hear his reaction to the owlbear and he got blocked by Shadowheart. why??? if anyone has sth to say let them say it.
Now I’m gonna rant a bit about Asta’s content in act 3. there’s quite a big difference between act 1 and 3 in terms of camp cutscenes. while in act 1 you have to long rest pretty much constantly to see everything that’s queued up, in act 3 it isn’t necessary. act 3 feels much emptier esp when it comes to Astarion or Karlach. Cazador isn’t involved in the main plotline so there’s no incentive to deal with him unless you really want to help Asty. Karlach and her soul coins - i didn’t understand their purpose, guess it was scrapped. same as the possibility for Asty to explore different ways to release himself from Cazador’s clutches, to be able to stay in the sun. as it is now there’s nothing for him, just a throwaway dialogue option added last minute that you’re going to look for the solution together. that solution should have been available in act 3–another scrapped content—necromancy of thay. as it stands now - I think mainly because of this missing content, there’s only one option to help Asty see reason to refuse the ritual and even that requires high persuasion check. all that we’re given is one good choice (which you can’t probably pass with a non-charismatic character) and two bad choices with one of them being No I won’t help you which does not give you any additional chances to reason with him. which there should’ve been especially if he’s romanced and on the highest approval. lastly, we should’ve been given a waaaay more satisfying conclusion - once again as it stands now, it deeply hurt me to watch him run away from the sun with nobody expressing any sort of concern for him whatsoever. he deserves better. and i’m too old and tired to write a fix-it fic about this 🙈
the end of rant 😅
Hi! Thank you for sharing your opinions with me 😊 I agree with you, I would've preferred, for example, fewer shiny objects and more party banters/cutscenes with our companions. Especially when it comes to friendship interactions, you really feel a lack of content. They are all amazing characters and I wish we could spend more time with them, it would have been cool to have something similar to the Citadel DLC in Mass Effect.
Regarding the companions' reactions that override each other, if Larian is hell-bent on leaving it like that, I hope there will be some saint modder out there who will be able to get rid of this mechanic. I'd do it myself but unfortunately I know nothing of how mods work 😭
And Yes, after completing the quest for the characters there's 0 content after that unfortunately when it comes to interactions in camp. Don't get me started on our best girl Karlach, they really did dirty to her. Her confrontation with Gortash is the most anti-climatic thing I've ever seen. She gets angry, understandably so, for like 5 minutes, and then that's it, everything is back to normal. AT least give us a cut scene with her stabbing the hell out of Gortash, them staring in each other eyes while he dies, give me some pathos, something! It's supposed to be the climax of her narrative arch, c'mon!
There's definitely a lot of cut content, I don't know if it's because they ran out of time or they were having budget issues, maybe a bit of both. I hope they will add them back later but I honestly doubt that. Unfortunately, the ending is really lacking as well, you can really see that they ran out of time there. Larian promised they would fix it, so I hope they manage to put together a satisfactory epilogue for all the characters. I reeeeeeally hate Astarion's ending in particular, there's no way my character wouldn't run after him to make sure he's okay and to comfort him. It would have been cool to have at least a party like the one with the tieflings in Act 1 to properly say goodbye to all characters (Dragon Age Origins really nailed it in that sense, even if it's brief you have the chance to speak with all characters and ask them for their future plans after the final battle).

What do you recommend that’s a good base pc to build off of over time, one that’s cost effective but good enough to run ts3 and ts4 simultaneously but I can add better graphics cards and ssds later on?
I think it depends, it's hard to really recommend any specific one bc, I've only ever used one, and they don't manufacture them anymore. I also got my PC to play Fallout 4, bc my old PC crapped out, and I was over sims at the time. Considering its open world, and all the mods I would likely cram into it, I didn't wanna waste money on just anything, so I did some research on gaming PC's ( which I'd never bought until then ) and ended up getting an Acer Predator for about 1299$ at the time.
When I bought it, it had a 1060 GTX, 500GB SSD, 1TB HD and 16GB RAM, dealt with 6 years of my bs with not an issue.
Now the reason I say it depends is bc, many games can run on anything honestly, a lotta them these days want to get in as many hands as possible, so making them work well on lower end systems, esp laptops and consoles, is the best way to do that, since a lot of gamers honestly couldn't give chicken noodle soup about how great a game looks, just that it doesn't lag. However if you plan to play on high to ultra settings, with mods and cc, esp high texture cc, you're going to have to keep some things in mind.
Processor
Intel i5's are pretty powerful for the cost, but I'd recommend an i7 if you can fit the bill. Replacing it shouldn't be too difficult, so long as you find one that's compatible with your motherboard, and they tend to cost a little less, and be more readily available than GPU's for instance.
GPU
I've seen some mid-high gaming rigs run on a 1660 GTX which I hear is a pretty good card, they also run a bit cheaper than the 20 or 30 series RTX, and honestly... you don't need a 20 or 30 series RTX to play The Sims 3 or 4, it doesn't even have any built-in options to utilize a lotta the innovative features these cards have.
I played The Sims 4 on ultra on my 1060 GTX, and it ran and looked fine. Though should you decide to upgrade, understand it might be quite costly, and also a bit difficult to find considering we're still technically in a chip shortage.
Memory
16GB is pretty standard these days, anything more is for those into heavy multi-tasking, however some games are beginning to suggest 32GB.
SSD
Main drive needs to be a 500GB SSD minimum... 250 will absolutely get you nowhere with how Windows updates gobble that shit up. You'll also be storing all your saves, mods, and cc on this main drive, so honestly if you can, go for the 1TB, you won't regret it, especially since upgrading mine to a 1TB was an absolute nightmare.
You'll likely need a second drive as well, and although it's common a second drive will be a regular ol' hard drive ( HD ), which is fine, you've gotta install your Spotify app somewhere, do absolutely consider getting another 500GB or larger SSD installed later, games these days basically start at 80GB install size easy, this doesn't include updates and dlc added later, and a drive doesn't run well when it's almost full.
Brands
I've had my Acer Predator desktop for roughly 7 years now, and it's an absolute champ... my husband's Acer Predator Helios on the other hand... crapped out like two years in, he only ever played Skyrim, and only ran it on medium-high settings. So when it comes to brands it's kinda... eh, I would just try to avoid anything that's like HP or Dell... they're kinda iffy and difficult to upgrade unless you're willing to drop 2k+ on an Alienware, I hear a lotta pretty good things about Lenovo tho, and MSI, if a laptop is more your thing.
Finally, a lotta straight out the box gaming rigs are outfitted with AMD processors and cards these days, and they've come a long way over the years. They're pretty powerful now, almost equal and at times even better than their Intel or Nvidia counterparts, but can be more cost effective if price is a big concern.

New hack/exploit on official server # :: Conan Exiles Allgemeine Diskussionen
Tumblr media
💾 ►►► DOWNLOAD FILE 🔥🔥🔥 With this hack it is possible for you to have speed hack which affects your attack speed and any other animation, including potion ones , teleport other players in front of you, know the location of other players ESP , enter invisible inside the base of enemies, place bombs and view the contents of containers. As much as hackers are reported, they are banned only on official servers, and some of the hack functions interfere with private servers, because there is no way to monitor ESP for example. Besides this, if they get banned on official, they come with another acc to continue their work. And as for the community, who has had contact with these hacks? I remember a few years ago there was a wave of hackers, but Funcom managed to solve it. I have documented the Hackers before found a stream of one, he could teleport walls, lock onto a far away player and teleport hit them, looks like hes doing that to you, speed hack, and open vaults , and you can find numerous YouTube videos on it. Not all too much that can be done, funcom is more on it then they used to be but they seem to have an infinite amount of accounts, maybe because the game is so cheap where they are from or it might be a hack in of itself seen evidence they can hack dlc like siptah. Go figure. I can actually explain this somewhat, it was when funcom live was introduced it made ping incredibly high to even normal servers within your region, people were having to use direct connect just to get on their own servers, and it seems like it just got left as a work around. Always one foot ahead, unless you lock the game up, server side stats aka locked stats only given at each lvl. No mods allowed etc. This is really sad. I really love this game and recently i came back to it to play Roleplay servers, but even them are doomed by this kind of hack. ESP itself ruins everything and the other features are much more nocive. Yeah funcom have to do something quick the server died because of this i see them in every server i go please fix this before everybody uninstall the game forever so much work lost in seconds. This topic was automatically closed 7 days after the last reply. New replies are no longer allowed. Hacks are dominating the game Conan Exiles General Discussion. Is Funcom aware of this? Is there anything being done about it? Private servers really need to rely on the vigilance and investigation of their own admins. There is a somewhat legal form of ESP existing due to funcoms introduction of healthbars though. I have reported this hack like 2 years ago to them.

Okay I finally got Zane's new mod from the dlc and I gotta say while it works with the clone so you don't have to do much work yourself, that skill is suuuper underwhelming at max/high level (which is probably when you're going to be getting it anyway, so... Hmmm).
I feel like it is pretty pointless for Zane as it does not synergize at all with any of the skills he has unless they're planning on a 5th tree where he will get bonuses for not reloading (anarchy adjacent?) or for firing long enough (like Moze). Which, while I really would want one, I doubt bc it feels like they're wrapping up their major dlc for the game. So it's very much a "yeah I can theoretically shoot for forever. Cool" until the novelty wears off, but there's no real benefit for his skills with this unlike Moze and I swapped back to another mod once I confirmed it worked with the clone. You can probably stack the consecutive hits anoint to a higher number than usual but that's about all I've got. And still with consecutive hits you really wanna be using it on a big boss so it's easy to stack, so the whole "kill an enemy" bit is... Kinda restrictive. Maybe with a reflux/brainstormer/banjo/redistributor it'd be good if you have your clone or drone getting the crit kills for you. I dunno, I couldn't use it long enough to test that out, so maybe I'm completely wrong with my assumption. With a 6 shot mag on the reflux and the lack of real damage on the redistributor tho I'm wary. I'll probably test it tomorrow as that's my alone time day.
From my usage of it today tho, 3/10 at least it has some sort of use (cough cold warrior the biggest disappointment cough) and the skills it buffs aren't complete garbo for late game use. It's just that, to me, the unique effect feels rushed, like they couldn't think of a new COM skill for him that worked with his skill set so they just slapped 'you regen all ur mag ammo' onto it and called it. Same with Fl4k's with the grenade on pet crit as I've never seen a Fl4k specific build that would be amazing with grenade regen and I don't think I will anytime soon... Maybe I'm wrong and there's a grenade that's game changing but I kinda doubt it as Fl4k has no grenade skills to make it shine so it'd just be good on everybody and super on Moze. Both unique skills for Zane and Fl4k feel like they fit Moze (bottomless mags, demolition woman) more than them. At least Amara and Moze's play into their skills a bit. BUT. Legendary class mods were always kinda disappointing with their actual potential (looking at the super creative Amara mods that only flopped bc the execution was meh), esp. for Zane, so I am not that surprised in the end lol
My issue with the legendary mods in the game (speaking as a Zane main I bet they are similar for the other VHs are that a lot of them, notably the dlc ones, would probably be really fun and cool to use at lower levels (I am thinking specifically nvhm, below level 40, definitely pre-mayhem), but when/where are you getting these mods for that time period. Like idk maybe I'm weird but I try to do nvhm then tvhm immediately after. I definitely wouldn't do a whole dlc after nvhm when exp is lowered so I don't pass 30 until I pop into tvhm. So by the time I beat tvhm and can do the podcast final quest I'm about level 50-55 and the new mods I can use until I pop into mayhem levels to level up to 65 quicker and the special skills immediately outclassed by the spy or seein dead (which is absurdly easy to get compared to these other mods- god damn it someone dethrone this fool of a mod) (and don't go ohh spy mod spy mod is Seein Dead with those funky mustache glasses on I'm not fooled). So yeah. The other legendary mods for Zane except maybe the executor? (Depending on If ur OK with losing half ur damage compared to spy/seeing dead.) are sad at max level. Which is when you should really get them anyway so we are back at the beginning here. Aaaaaa-

Teldryn Sero Dialogue Expansion (TSDE) - an open ended W.I.P. project for others to expand upon, finish, etc.
Hello! Since September '18, I've been slowly working on a large dialogue expansion mod for the DLC2 hireling, Teldryn Sero. I've created mods in the past for other games, but this was my first ambition involving Skyrim/Skyrim Special Edition. After many months of trial and error, I've decided to step away from modding to work on smaller projects outside of gaming.
I figured that since I've dedicated way too many hours into this already just for it to die away, why not see if the community would be interested in what I already have?
Quick Overview;
Now I love the Dragonborn DLC, and think that one of the best additions was introducing Teldryn Sero as a potential follower. The vast amount of his location based commentary separates him from other vanilla followers, making him feel more unique and original. After traveling with him for an extended period of time however, everything started to be pretty repetitious.
My goal was to give him around 350 additional lines of dialogue by taking existing lines from other NPCs sharing his voice type, then reapplying them to different situations.
Some of these new situations include;
Player is sneaking (lines are quieter, softer, etc.)
Player is performing a task (enchanting, mining, etc.)
Player either fails or succeeds while lockpicking
Player is a Werewolf, Vampire, or a Vampire Lord (when transforming, feeding, etc.)
Player is healing Teldryn, and/or they themselves have low health
visiting certain guild HQs, towns, etc.
additional Hellos, Goodbyes, Trading, Waiting, generic idles
variation depending on relationship rank to the player (lovers in comparison to allies/friends)
new conversational branches
+ many more
Project's Current State;
So far I've finished editing, compiling, and organizing a total of 338 .wav files.
Most have only been slightly modified, however a bunch are entirely new! I spent many, many hours splicing and merging various lines together, so even though the actual file amount is 338, the content in those files consist of assets used from nearly 400 different vanilla files.
There are 250 files connected to an .esp in the Creation Kit, all with proper .fuz files.
A couple lines will need their .lip/.fuz files regenerated since they played slightly out of sync while I was testing in-game.
Over 200 lines already have their conditions setup.
Be aware, the Idles portion is the most incomplete! Some of the Idles need tweaking when it comes to frequency rate, some need to be moved to other categories/be deleted, while others don't have anything in place yet (outside of the basic core such as Teldryn's refid, follower status, etc.).
Nothing is properly scripted/connected to the dialogue branches in-game.
Coding for when the player is lockpicking, healing Teldryn, and even for just the generic dialogue branches like "Follow me" and "Trading" still needs to be entered.
Some .wav files may need tweaking depending on your personal preference.
A handful of lines have been used multiple times. For example, there's a line used for when Teldryn becomes impatient while waiting to do a task for the player, while also acting as a potential goodbye ONLY when Teldryn is waiting for the player. If you run into a line you want to delete, edit, move, etc., go right ahead! It really comes down to you and where you want to take this.
You can find more information along with the download link over on Nexus!

i know hte rerelease is intended to be mainly a stability patch with all the dlc content added back in, but i hope the modding capabilities have been expanded somewhat as well beyond just the removal of the table limits, esp since it’s been in the works for so long now. i understand the progress probably slowed down mostly because of Idol’s deterioriating health tho, whatever we get in the end is already a goddamn miracle

@demonwrestler well, if you mean, “how do you make mods?” then my help is limited. i’ve futzed around a little with dai mod manager to try to isolate assets for export to dao (i found most of the ones i wanted, i just don’t have the tools to export them lmao). there’s an old forum for this stuff. tho the best tutorials i’ve found are from the lovely sapphim
if you mean “how do you use mods w this game?” THAT i can help with. basically, you’ll want the dai tools suite and the frosty tools suite. for dai, i recommend dedicating a download subfolder to daimods u know you wanna use, and then directing the dai mod manager to that subfolder, so u don’t have to do a lot of work checking and unchecking mods (i used to have separate subfolders by inquisitor, but ive recently reorganized so that i have one subfolder for the stuff that’s a) only in daimod format, and b) smth i want for all inquisitors).
you run the mod manager, everything hopefully goes smoothly, and then it’s frosty time. to make daimm and frosty work together, you need to find the subfolders in origin games/dai/update named “patch” and another one thats titled smth like patchedblahmergedblahwhatever (i am v helpful). rename “patch” to smth else (i use “patch (official)”) and rename the other to “patch.” you need to do this so frosty will run properly w daimods.
frosty, itself, is very simple. it’s faster and easier to change mods out, since u don’t need to completely rerun the whole process, and you can even make profiles by inquisitor (eg, i am using a profile titled “amell, with daimm” rn). frosty can run daimods, but it can be iffy, esp w texture mods for some reason. i’m not 100% on this, but i think other daimods are usually fine (eg, you might be able to run stuff that changes store stock or ability trees w/o issue)
the benefits of dai mm are that some mods have simply never been updated to frosty. in some cases, they’re just abandoned, in others, even the modder can’t figure out why they won’t work in the other format (discovered recently i’d been bedeviled for DAYS bc my fav cass outfit refuses to work in frosty, despite the modder’s best efforts and other successfully converted mods. v strange!). it also is still better at handling configurable mods (which are rare, but precious to me. i love you, svarty. thank you for all my pretty and op new knives).
the benefits of frosty are that it’s much quicker and easier to change. if you want to change one measly mod in daimm, you have to completely redo your whole setup (esp tragic if you use a lot of configurable mods, bc u have to reconfigure them EVERY TIME). it also makes troubleshooting much easier, bc u can easily test mods in batches to see which one is fucking you. and if you want a mod to keep working in the dlcs (including trespasser), frosty is your best bet.
frosty is also unique in that, after some recent updates, it can handle certain tasks that are simply impossible in daimm. the biggest example, to me, is bundle editing. it’s still kinda new and tricksy (from what i understand), but bundle editing allows for fun stuff like character swaps (see: my many alistairs) and hair editing for npcs and qunari (now us qunari lovers can have the same wildass sims hair as everyone else, and so can the eggman). it’s a bit touchy (bundles don’t play well together), but very fun!
for general troubleshooting: if the game is forever on a loading screen (like 5+min), then there’s probably a daimod at fault (test any loaded in frosty first, then start futzing with daimm). if everything is completely fucking bonkers, it’s more likely (but not necessarily) a frosty mod at fault. generally. i had three separate vivienne mods, both daimod and frosty, that all fucked my game in different ways yesterday, so you never know. sometimes the entire game world just comes apart at the seams bc you wanted to give your favorite first enchanter a snazzy lil gold accent on her casual outfit :(

Hi! I am rather new to modding Oblivion and I was wondering if there is any mods you would recommend for it? Or maybe just your mod list, if you are comfortable with sharing that? Your Oblivion characters always look so beautiful, especially Iriana. Anyway, I hope you having a wonderful day! :)
It’s ironic you ask Nonnie, considering I’m wrestling with Oblivion myself and failing atm XD
Still, I’m happy to drop some recommendations for mods I use and can usually get to cooperate with me ^-^
First off, you’ll want the Official Oblivion Patch, the Unofficial Oblivion Patch, the Unofficial Shivering Isles Patch, and the Unofficial Oblivion DLC Patches (if you have the GOTY edition). They fix a bunch of issues in the game, and some mods require them to be installed, so they’re a solid place to start.
The rest are under the cut because boy this got long o.o
Character Creation:
I cannot recommend Nuska’s Oblivion Character Overhaul enough. It’s an absolute must have for me as it deals with Oblivion’s potato faces beautifully. And, thanks to the hard work of other modders, it is possible to customise OCO further. I’ll list those in just a second. You’ll also need the Oblivion Script Extender and Blockhead to get it to work.
I also use the HGEC Female Body for my OCs - if you use that mod or any other body mods, there are some additional files provided by Nuska that make OCO compatible with them. They’re located in the optional files for OCO, and the description for those will tell you what order you need to install them in.
Now, my other OCO Mods that I recommend:
Orsimer Overhaul for OCOv2 - merges OCO and Orsimer Overhaul for a look I personally love for orc characters. It can be a little hit and miss with getting it to work on my end, so you’ll need to decide if you want to have a go at wrestling with it, but I personally think it’s worth a try
OCOv2 Martin and Adoring Fan Fix - I’m not a huge fan of OCO’s take on Martin, so I prefer this one even though it makes him look a bit too young imo
Unique Face Features for OCOv2 - Adds some warpaints, scars, freckles, and other kinds of face markings to the cc. iirc they’re tweaked with the age slider
Warpaint for OCOv2 - adds some more Skyrim warpaints
Seamless for OCOv2 - removes the very visible neckseam on characters. Whether or not I can get this one to work is usually hit and miss for me ^^”
New Brows for OCOv2 - exactly what it says on the tin ;)
New Eyes for OCOv2 - new eye texture replacements, along with some optional files to customise them a little
Better Necks for OCOv2 - adds some detailing to the neck and throat of the character model. Not a requirement ofc, I’m just a sucker for detail
OCOv2 Male Beard - adds some actual beards to the cc
Hairstyle mods can vary in quality, and some only come available as wigs. I only use a couple myself.
Sidenote, wigs tend to make your characters look like they have no ears so you’ll need a mod that adds equip-able ears - I’ll have one recommended further down.
ANiceOakTree’s Hairstyles for Oblivion is a mod that adds hairs as wigs. There’s a few styles in different colours, and it’s the one I use for Iriana. You create your character with whatever hair, it doesn’t matter, and then travel to either Vilverin, which is the Ayleid Ruin literally opposite the Sewer Exit after you finish the tutorial, or in the Cheydinhal Chapel near the doors.I usually tend to go to Vilverin, as it’s closer for me and the chest is literally down the stairs from the entrance, plus it counts as stealing from the chapel so I’d recommend the ruin if you’d rather not get in trouble for wanting nice hair.
Zinni_s Braided Redguard Expanded is good if you plan to play as a Redguard and would like a braided style. It’s added to the cc, so you don’t need to go looking for it ^^
Chakaru Wigs 2.0 is a bit trickier. You need to access the Testing Hall in order to find them, and I can’t remember exactly which room they’re in. They’re located in a chest directly opposite the door, however, so it narrows the search a little. If I get to the point where Oblivion is cooperating with me, I’ll add the location here.In order to access the Testing Hall, open the console and type ‘coc testing hall’ (if that doesn’t work try removing the space between testing and hall, I forget which is the correct way), and then in the centre of the main room, find the door labelled Hawkhaven, go through it, and fast travel to return to Cyrodiil.
I’ve not used the Cazy Hair Pack in some time now, but it’s still worth a mention. It adds some new hairs to the cc, so no looking around ruins and testing halls to find them ^^
Armour and Clothing
Ordinarily I would never download Apachii Goddess Store, but it is where I get Iriana’s ears. On the ground floor, there’s a container full of equip-able ears you can take free of charge, and iirc they match to your character’s skintone.
Belphe’s Travelling Gear (the female version) is another mod I wouldn’t usually use, but it looks surprisingly good on Iriana sooooo. There’s a few mods on this page you can try out if you’re interested, but I have no idea how to install the ones without esp files, so I can’t help you if you want any of those.
This is my favourite remodel of the Archmage Robes (I could do without the titty physics, but it’s very unnoticeable most of the time so it’s survivable). Because of the unfortunate physics aspect, it does require Coronerras Maxiumum Compatibility Skeleton, but otherwise it’s a brilliant remodel. However, the Archmage Robes present a problem with equip-able ears - as they take up an amulet slot and these robes don’t let amulets show, you will have missing ears with these robes. There’s another mod I use to fix this, which I’ll get to late.
Alternatively, there is a male replacer for the Archmage Robes that I like but (obviously) have never used if you’re making male characters
The Triss Armour Retexture is another great mod, and I personally like to use the Dark Brotherhood variant for my DBH characters as opposed to actual Shrouded Armour. They can be a pain to obtain as you need to fight your way through some bandits in Fort Cedrian, then locate the bag in the Mausoleum, but they are worth the trouble.
Assorted Protective Female Armours is another must imo as it fixes the ridiculous boobplates and some textures for some of the game’s heavy armours.
If you used the HGEC Body for female characters, then you’ll want to grab the Vanilla Amulets Fix for HGEC as it’ll fix how amulets fit on that body.
Spike4072s Female Sheogorath Regalia is a great mod if you’d rather keep the iconic Sheogorath look on a female character rather than have it swapped out for a dress.
Shrouded Armour Cowl is another great mod for DBH characters; I use it with the Dark Brotherhood Triss Armour, seeing as the hood doesn’t really mix with it.
Sinblood_SonjaArmourTweaked is another good female armour mod; it looks good, and is reasonably functionable.
Other Mods
Oblivion Reloaded is a fantastic mod; primarily it’s a graphics extender mod, and it really does make the world of Oblivion look amazing.
Alternative Start is a great mod, and it functions very much like its Skyrim counterpart. If you want to do the Main Quest but start elsewhere, after a certain number of days pass you’ll receive a message to meet someone in a set period of time at the Temple of the One. That will put you in the tutorial and set up the Main Quest. Word of warning, miss that meeting and I don’t think it’s possible to do the Main Quest at all so just be careful.
Oblivion XP is an absolute must if you struggle with Oblivion’s levelling system like I do. XP is awarded for defeating foes, discovering locations, completing quests, stealing things, etc. It’s installed with Oblivion Mod Manager, so make sure you grab that.
Kvatch Rebuilt is a pretty damn good mod which offers a questline to rebuild the city of Kvatch and give it a ruler. That ruler can even be the player, depending on some choices you make. The voice acting isn’t stellar, but it’s worth it to see Kvatch restored. It requires the Engine Bugs Fixes so make sure to grab that. Also, make sure you pick up Compatibility Patches for OCO to avoid too many weird faces around Kvatch and other places.
Reneers Guard Overhaul is also a pretty useful mod if the ever-charming behaviour of the Oblivion Guards gets a bit wearing. They’ll no longer chase you to the ends of Tamriel, and a crime committed in Cheydinhal won’t get you attacked in Leyawiin (kinda like how Skyrim manages crime).
No Anachronistic Main Quest Comments is good for immersion; you won’t have people saying how a city might not go the way of Kvatch after the Oblivion Crisis is over.
Now, the amulet issue with the Archmage Robes. I fixed that with the Summonable Private Quarters, which provides a station where you can mess with slots for armour/clothing sets. There’s lots of use for this mod besides just making your amulets and ears visible, but this is what I primarily use it for.To make it work you need the Core files of Cobl, so manually download that and move the core folder into Oblivion’s Data folder.
I also use a couple of animation mods, namely Staff Animation which changes the PC’s idles and the way they move when holding a staff so it looks less awkward.
There’s also the Heroic Female Idle Replacer which is less stiff than the vanilla female idle. Otherwise I recommend searching through the Oblivion Nexus’ animation tag and finding any mods that suit you and your characters best.
Project Oblivion Gate Destruction Spell is useful if you get tired of diving into gates over and over again when you just want to get on with the game. Just cast the spell and poof, no more gate and you still get the Sigil Stone. It’s good for when you’ve already played the game over a few times.
The Elder Scrolls Online Imports is a must have if you love ESO like I do. It adds some bits of lore, creatures, and locations from ESO.
Better Cities makes the cities of Cyrodiil more varied and interesting, though it might be a bit troublesome at times. I’ve had the occasional problem with this mod, purely based on load order so just keep that in mind. Otherwise it’s a gorgeous mod with a lot of effort and creativity put into it.
Vanilla Staff Replacer isn’t necessary if you’re not playing a mage, but I really enjoy it personally ^^
I’m going to add Black Horse Colour Overhaul because it honestly bugs me that the black horses in Oblivion aren’t black
Companion Vilja is a mod I haven’t actually used yet, but I’ve got installed for this playthrough because I’ve been meaning to play it forever. Apparently Terry Pratchett himself contributed to this mod, so that should speak for its quality.
I hope this was helpful to you Nonnie, and good luck with modding Oblivion ^^

Do you mod Skyrim... if you do I'm interested in hearing abt your fav mods.
The only mods I've made for Skyrim were for household consumption, as they were either for unbalancing aspects of the game that my wife and I find unfun and limiting (such as a “bag of holding” plugin that removes the encumberence system), or repurposed other modders' assets in such a way that I'd have to get a dozen different permissions before I even thought of uploading it anywhere (I absolutely despised the 3D mesh used for the Ancient Nord Sword/Nord Hero Sword and set about coming up with a suitable replacement mesh, including unique meshes for the named unique enchanted variants).
I do have a good understanding of how mods work even if I don't have the time to devote to hand tuning a 1k+ mod loadout like the one I recently commented on — this comes from years of experience.
Back in the Morrowind era, when the Bethesda Modding Community was just getting started at figuring this all out, I had authored a mod installation troubleshooting guide that the moderators on the official Bethesda forums pinned to the top of the modding forum. There's still copies of it out there if you know where to look, and while a ton of this stuff was Morrowind specific, or just plain out of date, it does show just how long I've been messing around with mods for Bethesda games.
Being around since the early days has also given me a bit of a historical perspective on things. The script extender that has been released for every game from Morrowind to FO4, was originally developed to help implement what the YouTube mod reviewers these days call “slooty outfits”.
Along similar lines, within a week of its release, Oblivion was rocked with a topless mod scandal (this was in the wake of GTA's Hot Coffee). Bethesda initially tried to blame the modders for adding altered textures, but anyone who understood how Bethesda mods worked knew that was a blatant lie. The mod itself was a single esp file of minimal size, because all it had to do was point at a different, anatomically correct texture file already existing in the game's assets. When someone figured out how to recreate the effect on the then un-moddable XBox version of the game using Action Replay codes, the ESRB saw through the lie. However it wasn't the bare breasts that made the game get bumped from Teen to Mature, but the blood and gore in the Dark Brotherhood quests.
Often when bugs pop up, such as the Shivering Isles DLC's greenmote bug, the mod community diagnoses the problem and issues fixes well ahead of Bethesda.

DA 20+ Questions
Tagged by @antivan-surana thanks! Tagging @situationnormal @the-dread-doggo @acepavus @aroundofgwent @lakambaeni @kxnways @fuckbioware (no pressure ofc) and anyone who wants to?
The rest is under a read more because it’s long
01) Favourite game of the series?
Origins, only because you got less and less op as a mage as the games went on. I love all the games tbh.
02) How did you discover Dragon Age?
My friend got my sister into it. They kept talking and talking about it so finally I was like “ok lets see what the big deal is” and here I am now
03) How many times you’ve played the games?
I’ve done Origins twice fully, DA2 four times fully (omg I didn’t realize this until now lol) and DA:I just once fully. I have one unfinished playthrough of Origins with a Cousland, and I’m in the middle of maybe two of DA:I. I think I’ve gone back and replayed certain parts of both Origins and DA:I plenty of times.
04) Favourite race to play as?
Elf I guess? Though I’ve only fully played as a human and elf. I’m in the middle of a dwarf playthrough and I’m thinking of doing a qunari one in the future. It might change idk.
I just really liked playing as an elf in Origins so that’s why I got into elves. But the funny thing is, I wasn’t even thinking of playing as an elf when I played for the first time. I wanted to play as a human. I just did it on a whim.
05) Favourite class?
Mage, hands down. Realistically, they’re the most versatile class. They can do range and melee since anyone can learn how to fight with weapons. But the last two games won’t let you so :)
Also, this stems from the fact that I’ve been a harry potter fan since I could remember.
06) Do you play through the games differently or do you make the same decisions each time?
In my full, proper playthroughs that I’ve finished, it’s slightly different but still the same basic ideas. Sided with mages, agreed with Anders, etc.
But I am planning to try an evil playthrough in the future so
07) Go-to adventuring group?
DA:O (I have two)
Leliana, Wynne, Shale - the OG crew; they were my main crew in my first playthrough and it was a pretty even party
Zevran, Leliana, Alistair - the elf crew; esp. with Rhian they’re all elves because I saw a theory that Leliana is half elf and I’m down
DA2
It’s a mixed bag. If I’m not playing as a mage, I usually take Anders a lot because we need a healer and Merrill can’t heal. I tend not to take Sebastian as much after I max his friendship. After Sebastian, I take Aveline the least. Other than that I just mix it up. Unless I’m romancing someone, then I take them every time.
I’d love to take Anders, Fenris, and Merrill out more often but I hate how mean they all are to each other (looking @ u bioware 👀)
DA:I
My first playthrough, I mixed it up a lot in the beginning but then I ended up bringing Solas, Cole, and Blackwall a lot near the end for some reason?
I love taking Vivienne, Dorian, and Solas out, especially if I’m playing a mage, because it’s such a pretty fireworks show
In general though, if I’m romancing someone I take them with me almost always.
08) Which of your characters did you put the most thought into?
I think it’s a tie between Rhian and Lu.
09) Favourite romance?
To no one’s surprise, it’s Zevran :3
Solas is second because I just really like that angst.
10) Have you read any of the comics/books?
I’ve read The Silent Grove, Those Who Speak, and Until We Speak (because someone gifted me the Omnibus) and The Calling.
I also have Hard in Hightown, which I should probably read lol, and the art book of inquisition.
11) If you read them, which was your favourite book?
The Calling solely because of my mom Fiona and my dad Duncan.
12) Favourite DLCs?
Awakening because I love everyone and its also really funny that Rhian, who is 19 at that point, had to basically babysit people older than her and also run a whole arling.
I love both Legacy and Mark of the Assassin. Mark of the Assassin was really funny (though I hated the stealth part). I love Legacy specifically because when I was fighting Corypheus, both Varric and Anders K.O.’d and it was just me and Carver. It was a special family moment bringing down a whole entire magister together. I also hc that that was canon and it brought Kaia and Carver closer together.
13) Things that annoy you.
I’m gonna talk about the game bc if this is about the fandom, then that’s a whole other thing.
Anders’ writing for one. It doesn’t make sense that he’d approve of giving Fenris back to Danarius. And also that he wouldn’t tell f!Hawke that he’s bi? Then there’s the fact that Anders, Fenris, and Merrill all don’t get along when they have a lot in common.
Anything that was written by Lukas Krisdkjsdhkdk. Aveline, Sera, etc. he did a really bad job.
Also didn’t like that mages got less OP in the last two games.
There’s also the tone-deafness? Dorian, a brown man, saying slavery is ok. And also there’s the dialogue between Solas and Vivienne where Solas supposedly “owns” Vivienne. I think he says something like “may you learn”? Solas, a white person, saying this to Vivienne, a black woman, when there’s obvious colorism in Thedas? I think not.
There’s probably other but I can’t think of them right now.
14) Orlais or Ferelden?
Orlais is too snooty and Ferelden doesn’t season their food. I pick Seheron and Laysh because that’s where the Asians are at.
15) Templars or mages?
Mages
16) If you have multiple characters, are they in different/parallel universes or in the same one?
Originally, my canonverse was Rhian, Kaia, and Luwalhati. Alden and Bolin were part of an AU. Then Alden finagled his way in there, then I decided to have Bolin in there too. So now i have twin Hawkes and Bolin is part of the Inquisition (if he’s a companion or not, I haven’t thought about)
I have plenty of other OCs that I’m planning on, but they’re currently sorted into a different universe.
17) What did you name your pets? (mabari, summoned animals, mounts, etc)
Pikamon for the Origins mabari. It’s a mix between the names of my two dogs, Pikachu and Cinnamon
Cinnachu for the DA2 mabari, also a mix of Pikachu and Cinnamon.
Lu’s mount is the royal sixteen (hart), which is given to you by Clan Lavellan if you manage to keep them alive iirc, and its name is Luntian, the tagalog word for green which is her favorite color. (In a teen!Lu AU, her mount is the bog unicorn bc she’s an edgelord)
18) Have you installed any mods?
It would be more surprising if I didn’t. How else would I manage to have my characters look like the’re poc?? And also get rid of whitewashing and have some continuity. I usually just do cosmetic mods if it’s my first playthrough. Then I do like “cheats” after I finish the game fully.
Fun fact, I once spent like 2+ hrs modding Origins to have the Zev romance the way I want. I also stayed up until like 5am trying to make Solas look like his concept art lol (it didn’t really work)
19) Did your Warden want to become a Grey Warden?
Rhian didn’t not want to become a warden. She read about them and thought they were an honorable order, but she didn’t expect to ever have a chance to become one. Her goal was to just go up in the Circle hierarchy, maybe even become First Enchanter. Then when the time came, she didn’t really have much of a choice.
20) Hawke’s personality?
Kaia is blue and Alden is purple
21) Did you make matching armor for your companions in Inquisition?
At first, I didn’t get what the big deal was with crafting. It didn’t seem fun at all lol. Then I tried it and was hooked. I don’t have them matching, but I do tend to try to match my Inquisitor with their LI in some way.
My usual procedure for armor in Inquisition is like this. I make everyone wear heavy armor and pick the materials that have the highest attributes, not caring how ridiculous the colors are. Then I go to tint them using a guide for each companion’s color scheme. This is the same for helmet but I usually have them turned off or have no one wearing one.
The only exception is Varric, Cole, and Blackwall. I have Varric wear the rogue armor that looks like his DA2 outfit, and Cole and Blackwall wear the Grey Warden heavy armor. I tint the grey warden armor using a guide for its color scheme.
I have Bull, Vivienne, and Cole wear their unique helmets.
22) If your character(s) could go back in time to change one thing, what would they change?
Rhian - She’d probably want to re-do how she told Zevran that she wasn’t exactly dead.
Kaia - Taken Quentin’s threat more seriously and killed him before he got to Leandra
Alden - He has no regrets
Luwalhati - wouldn’t have taken Sam and Wis with her so they wouldn’t have had to have died in the conclave explosion
Bolin - None, all of his decisions led him to Dorian and he’s happy with that.
23) Do you have any headcanons about your character(s) that go against canon?
They’re all at least part Seheron?
I also hc that neither Carver nor Bethany die because Kaia was able to cast a barrier on both of them before the ogre got them. Then they both became Grey Wardens because Carver contracted the taint in the expedition and wouldn’t join the Wardens unless Bethany came with him too.
Another hc I have is that Sebastian didn’t leave when Anders was spared and stayed to help out. But he went his separate way after because he still didn’t approve of sparing him.
Oh shoot, I almost forgot. The most against canon thing I’ve done probably? Rhian didn’t do the Ritual but she did slay the archdemon without dying. Rhian’s an arcane warrior, so when she slayed it, she was partway in the fade. Being partway into the fade was enough for her essence, I guess, to survive it. But she’s not mortal anymore and kind of a spirit now? So she periodically has to chill in the fade because being in the real world takes a toll on her.
25) Who did you leave in the Fade?
In the game, it was Stroud. I killed Loghain and no way is Alistair gonna be trapped in there. Fiona will be sad. So I made Alistair king in the game only, so Stroud was the one that was left.
This is another off canon thing I did. In my actual canon, Alistair is the warden contact. The Hawke that comes to the Inquisition is both Kaia and Alden. Alden brings Fenris with him because he doesn’t go anywhere without his Boo-Boo. Bethany and Carver also come because Weisshaupt was being weird and it seemed like they would be safer in the Inquisition. Lu + her party, Alistair, Kaia, Alden, Fenris, Bethany, and Carver all come to Adamant. Because there’s so many people, everyone was able to escape the Fade. No one is left behind.
26) Favourite mount? The nugs! All of them :)
Though I don’t really use the mounts lol

(WARNING: This post goes from talking about a mod for Fallout 3 to discussing political philosophy. If political philosophy is not your cup of tea, but light discussions on the conflicting drives of morality and survival are, please read the first half of this post. The second half might be offensive to some, and while I have no problems with people disagreeing with my philosophical ideas and ENCOURAGE you to read it even if you think it will be offensive, this is your warning.)
I wasn’t lying at the end of my last post. In between other obligations, I’ve begun playing Fallout 3 again. A heavily modded Fallout 3, true, but Fallout 3 none the less. I’m doing a run through with the The Wanderer’s Edition mod set, including other big mods such as Mort’s Mutant Mod, Project Beautiful, and the Weapon Mod Kit mod. The Capital Wastelands in this version is much harsher than that of the vanilla game. I am not only deriving enjoyment from the game itself, but from what I’m beginning to realize about my own nature as I become immersed in my character.
In Vanilla Fallout 3, I played a virtuous vigilante, whose goal was to rid the Wastelands of the corruption that plagued it. Raiders, slavers, the genocidal Enclave, Super Mutants, and all that fun stuff. I often turned down rewards or accepted quests for the sake of helping others rather than for any promise of rewards. Damocles (my vanilla Fallout 3 character) was an ideal for the Wasteland to strive after. He was the drifter cowboy, stopping in a town just long enough to solve their problems with the local bandits, before moving on to the next, the only reward being enough supplies to continue his lone journey. He didn’t need a reason to hunt down slavers, sadistic raiders, or the evil mercenaries of Talon Company. Damocles was a killer, but it was a harsh world and he was trying to make it safer. In the end, he was ready to sacrifice himself for the sake of all in the Wasteland to have a better life.
Roland…doesn’t have the luxuries that Damocles had. Roland can’t afford to help for the sake of helping, can’t just give water to a beggar asking for clean water. His Wasteland experience is very different from Damocles. Let me list some of the major differences the Wanderer’s Edition brings to the game, some mechanical, some based on the differences in backstory.
Hunger, Thirst, Sleep: Damocles never had to worry about his hunger level, or how thirsty he was, or even if he was tired or full of energy. Food healed you, sure, but that was all it did. He didn’t have to drink simply to stay ALIVE. Food was the same as medicine, except not as effective. Roland does. This mod requires the player to keep track of not only health and Action Points, but to make sure the player character isn’t starving to death in the middle of a fire fight. Water is important, as thirst builds up the fastest. Alcohol won’t do the job and dirty water is DANGEROUS. This is post-nuclear apocalypse, after all. The water is irradiated and too much radiation will give you negative effects in combats, which will in turn reduce your chances for survival.
The game has beggars sitting outside major “cities,” begging for purified water or else they’re going to die. They are not exaggerating. If you tell them to find their own water or offer them dirty water, they will indeed die. In the vanilla version, giving water to these beggars nets you “Good” Karma. Damocles was free with his water. He was a super human who didn’t need to drink anything ever. Roland is a human and water is scarce. If he gives his purified water to the beggar, he’ll have to drink the irradiated water so he doesn’t die of thirst. That’s assuming he even HAS purified water on him. Giving these beggars water is no longer simply good or bad, it’s a question of survival. If Roland gives the man his clean water, he is, effectively, reducing his own survival chances. Every time Roland helps these people, he is doing it at a cost to his own benefit. THAT is selfless altruism. Roland’s choice isn’t easy.

Tumblr media
This mechanic alters the player’s way of thinking. No longer is karma the driving force. Basic survival begins to make the selfless choices harder. When you are running low on water or medicine and you’re thirst meter is rising or you’re almost dead, and suddenly the concept of ownership begins to blur. Give a purified water to a beggar when you are thirsty yourself, only to go and steal one from the local bar because you can’t afford their extortionist prices. With Damocles, the idea of stealing water because I needed it was ridiculous. For Roland, the idea is quite sensible.
Weapons do higher damage: This set of mods makes weapons FAR more deadly than the Vanilla version. A raider with a machine gun can take my armored self in three seconds, even if I started at full health. This idea would be laughable to Damocles, even when all he wore was a duster and a cowboy hat. The damage reduction for that was something like twelve. Roland sports a nifty armored vault suit at sixteen damage reduction, and yet a prolonged gun fight will often leave him with no health. A simple knife can take half of Roland’s health away in one attack. Run out of ammo before the enemy is down and need to reload? Better hope you’re quick enough to get your weapon back up before he hits you with that super sledge.
Suddenly the idea of infiltrating a Raiders’ den and putting them all out of the Wastelands’ collective misery isn’t a simple action. For those who have played Fallout 3, do you remember Springvale Elementary? That early Raiders base near Megaton? It wasn’t too hard even for a low level gunslinger like Damocles. He went through a lot of ammo (at the time he didn’t have obscene stores for all weapons, so I had to switch weapons constantly), but there was never much threat. A few stimpacks were used to keep my health up, but they couldn’t kill me fast enough to really threaten my life.
Roland’s adventure into the Springvale Elementary was quite different. By the time he crawled out of his little scavenging trip, his fractured skull was giving him a concussion, his ribs were cracked, and one of his legs was broken. He was addicted to four different drugs, including Buffout (a drug that heals you immediately as well as increasing strength and endurance), Jet (a drug that increases action points), Morphine (allows the effects of crippled limbs to be ignored), and some other drug with a chemical name (damage resistant). Out of two hundred health, he had twenty five. His injuries meant sleeping wouldn’t cure him and might even result in a loss of health. He was carrying so much salvaged goods, it required a steady drip of Buffout to prevent him from being able to carry his treasure through the Wastelands back to Megaton.
The Lone Wanderer Fallout 4
(I enjoy Fallout 3’s system of encumbrance. When you are over-encumbered, you are unable to run or fast travel, having to leisurely stroll through the dangerous, unfriendly wastes. Factor in the broken leg, and you can imagine how slow that trip would be.)
Which leads nicely into another difference…
Stimpaks are rarer and do not instantly restore health: In Vanilla Fallout 3, using a stimpak will instantly restore your health by whatever amount it says. You can be close to death, go into your pipboy interface, take a few stimpaks, and be back to full health in a second. In late game, when Damocles was practically dripping stimpak’s into his blood through an IV, this meant even if he was losing some health, it wasn’t a danger.
The Wanderer’s Edition doesn’t do this. Stimpaks are much harder to find and more expensive in the economy of the mod. Even when you have a stimpak, it’s health restoration over time. If you are under attack from a melee opponent and about to die, a stimpak won’t save you. There is no way to get back to a high health, except for the highly addictive drug Buffout. Each use of the stimpak is a resource decision. “Is it better to use it now, when I have a pause in combat…or wait until I get a few shots in, then take it, then finish him off while I recover the health…How long do I have to wait before I can withstand a hit…”
Food doesn’t heal you in the mod. Drugs will, but then you risk the chance of getting addicted. Some drugs also come with negative side effects. Buffout I know makes turns much faster, which sounds better but can disorient you if you aren’t used to it. In Vanilla, all Buffout did was play with your stats.
Health is harder to recover: Not only due to the change in stimpaks. Beds used to be a way to recover from everything, even a concussion (wrap your heads around that one. Go to sleep to cure the concussion). Playing the mod, I assumed it still worked this way, so after a particularly rough fight with raiders, I found a bed that wasn’t stained with the blood of one of their mutilated victims and took a nap. I woke up, and my health was actually lower because Buffout had worn out. I felt well rested, but close to death with half my bones broken.
The sarcastic doctor wasn’t even sarcastic by the time I limped my broken body to his clinic and asked him to patch me up. So much for time healing all wounds.
Now, this might not seem that major of a change, but take a moment to consider the implications of having health be expensive to recover (Allow me to use my economics knowledge for a moment. You can either pay the doctor to heal you (fairly expensive) or use rare items to heal your wounds and restore your health. These items are free to obtain, but very expensive in use. In this world, these items sell for a LOT of bottle caps, the currency of the Wastelands. Every time you use one of these items, you are in fact losing more money than if you hiked back to a town and paid for healing. So while the items can be free to obtain, their is a high price in their actual use.) With the economics part of me now satisfied, the writer will continue. With Damocles, health became pointless. Enemies were either too powerful with my build or too weak. If they were too powerful, Damocles would be killed almost instantly. If they were too weak, he could stand there and let them shoot him, the duster his only protection, and his health would barely drop.
Roland loses health fast and it costs him a lot to get it back. When people ask him to go explore the Wasteland on their behalf, he can’t say “My pleasure.” It’s not that simple. He is FORCED to ask “What are you offering?” because every expedition is expensive. The line of what’s acceptable and what’s not begins to gray as cost of survival rises. What would be a righteous action for Damocles becomes a job for Roland. Raiders aren’t scum to be killed for the good of all, they’re people with goods Roland NEEDS.
Damocles grew up in a controlled Vault, Roland grew up in the Wastelands: One of the things I love about the Wanderer’s Edition is that it gives you the option to choose your background. In Vanilla, there is only one backstory for all your characters. You are the Lone Wanderer from Vault 101, the son of James, and spent your childhood being bullied by the Tunnel Snakes and being friends with Amata. It’s alright the first time, but after the first run, it just seems dull. The Wanderer’s Edition has a choice of backgrounds to pick from, with different benefits given depending what you chose.
Now, I suppose I should briefly explain what a Vault IS for those who never played any Fallout game. Prior to the Chinese invasion of the United States and the nuclear holocaust that followed, there was a company called Vault-Tec that built over one hundred “Vaults” across America. They advertised these Vaults as places to survive the nuclear holocaust and the fallout. In truth…well, many crimes have been committed in the name of science, right? Every Vault was a bit different, intending to study different reactions of their inhabitants. One of the vaults was deliberately built with a faulty door so that radiation would leak inside, causing all the inhabitants to turn into ghouls and…
Sorry, basically, the Vaults are a staple of the Fallout series. Vault 101 was designed with the purpose of never being opened again. It didn’t really work, but that’s another story. In short, Vault 101 was the very definition of a controlled environment where survival was assured and all Damocles had to worry about was what job he would be assigned.
Fallout 3 Wanderers Edition Guide Edition
I chose Wastelander for Roland’s backstory. From the moment he was born, he lived in the harsh, untamed, wilderness that had once been our nation’s capital. What does this mean? It means that he never was guaranteed a next meal, or even a next day. The mutated animals, the nihilistic sadistic raiders, the slavers, super mutants, Talon Company, cannibals, the Brotherhood Outcasts (who claim to be neutral, but killed Damocles’s dog for no reason. They’re total jerks), feral ghouls, Tenpenny’s men, no clean water, no agriculture, etc. etc. Every day must have been a struggle for a kid growing up in the Wastes. This isn’t the same as being a resident of Megaton or Rivet City or one of those other cities that serve as economic centers with communal defenses. This was a battleground where only the strong, smart, or lucky could survive.
Roland wouldn’t have had time for the Regulator’s ideals of justice, or the Brotherhood’s “Good Fight.” He’d be more worried about where he’d find the supplies he’d need to live in relative comfort for a little bit longer. Damocles never had to worry about where his food was coming from, which leaves him energy to be idealistic. He can get emotionally invested in the idea of a “Good Fight” or “Wasteland Justice.”
I’m sure there are more changes in this mod that I could use to point out the differences, but that’s not what this post is about (2,363 words and I’m only now getting to the point of this post). I didn’t compare the mod to Vanilla just to show what I’m playing. This mod gave me real choices. Choices that made me think.
Fallout 3 Wanderers Edition Guide Download
Here is where I throw my thoughts into a philosophical discussion that has been going on for centuries. In political philosophy, there is the idea of the “State of Nature”. Now, there is no agreed definition for what the State of Nature is, but the debate as I understand it can be stated as such: “What is humanity and the individual human like without the constraints and support of society and the state?”
Is man naturally social? Will he strive to be accepted by others even without societal expectations dictating he do so? Is the state the cause of man’s morality, or man’s immorality? Is man naturally driven by his own desires for superiority, or is that a product of society? What, in a nutshell, is man’s true nature?
I mentioned in an earlier post that when I play games with choices, I normally play the good options. I never saw the appeal in being a jerk in a video game when the game allows you, sometimes even encourages you to do so. Part of the fun of being a jerk to the game is the sense that you are somehow breaking the game, getting away with something you shouldn’t be doing. If the game lets you do it, it feels almost as though it’s simply indulging my childish desire to misbehave.
Damocles was a good, righteous, honorable, (stupid, but that’s because the writing and plot was stupid), nice, helpful, (stupid), selfless character. He traveled the Wastelands with the desire to help and create, not destroy. He lived outside of society, but was morally good.
However…as I explained above, his only conflicts were moral conflicts of society. He had no necessity to eat, to sleep, to drink. Health could be easily replenished and ammunition wasn’t scarce. It was almost as though he had never left comfortable society, where fewer people worry about where there next meal is coming from. A post-apocalyptic world and yet he still followed the moral code of a society that had been wiped out two hundred years in the past. He was…an impossibility.
When I began playing Roland, I intended to be good again. To help others and make the Wasteland a better place. By the time I made it to the first city of Megaton, I was tired, thirsty, desperately needed a place to sleep, and had almost no money on me. A bed was 120 bottle caps, which was almost my total amount. Certainly not enough to buy a meal and purified water. But my character was so thirsty.
I could drink from the sink or the toilet, suffering the irradiation (not to mention the humiliation)…or I could steal. I had my pride after all. I had paid for a room to sleep in, he already had my money. Moriarty (the owner of the saloon) surely wouldn’t miss ONE bottle of pure water.
The more I worried about where I was going to get my water, the more I felt myself being dragged inside Roland. It was easy to justify stealing water. Moriarty was rich and had already taken my money. He was rich because he had a guaranteed supply of food and water, as well as a shelter to call his own. I was poor. I had no bed, no food, no water, only my clothes and a gun.
So I stole the water. Within the first ten minutes, I had done what I had only ever accidentally done with Damocles. I had taken what was clearly another man’s possessions. I had no regrets about it, not because it wasn’t “real”, but because it was a simple question of survival. The concept of good and bad was lost to me.
As I continued the game, I found myself amusingly surprised at my choices. They were so different from Damocles. Once my very survival was threatened, the beggars asking me for water seemed more like lazy con artists than poor souls. You want my water? Do you know what I had to do to get this water? My karma meter stayed at a solid neutral, neither good nor bad. I was too busy worrying about costs of medicine and ammunition to worry about the moral implications of my actions. I stole and cheated to get by, though I justified it by saying I was only stealing from those who had a lot. I was more like Robin Hood than anything else. When I helped convince a junkie to quit his deadly habit, it wasn’t because I was concerned for him. I was thinking to myself “If he doesn’t need these drugs…I might be able to use them…”
Raiders’ bases? Good places to find chems, medicine, and ammunition. Talon Company hold outs? Explosives are probably nearby. Old, ruined, neighborhood? Probably some useful salvage items to be gathered here. Megaton? Largest economic center nearby. I stopped thinking about the people or if it was right to take these goods that weren’t mine. Everything was focused on me, my health, and my survival.
I would say, based on my choices when immersed in the character of Roland, this is the State of Nature for man. Outside society, he is neither good nor evil. A popular concept in modern philosophy, the idea of relatively morality, but I feel that doesn’t quite hold the right connotations. Outside of society, man has no moral code, not simply a different one. Morality requires energy as does society. Government cannot exist in any meaningful state unless its people have some idea of where their next meal is coming from (Not entirely accurate of course, and I might come back to this idea in a later post…but for now, that woefully inadequate statement will have to suffice). If your next meal, if water, if even a place to REST is not secure, you will not have the energy to worry about what is right, what is legal, and what is socially acceptable.
Hobbes’s view on the State of Nature is this: During the time men live without a common power to keep them all in awe, they are in that condition which is called war; and such a war as is of every man against every man.” (Leviathan, ch. XIII) While in this states, Hobbes says it is the natural right of a person to do anything he wills to survive, though the life of this person is “solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short.”
On the surface, Hobbes’s view closely matches my own. However, from what I understand of Hobbes’s position, society is a solution to this wild, individualistic drive to survive, to tame the selfish nature of man and make him selfless with regard to the state and society. He believes this natural state of almost primal survival to cause one to be “brutish and nasty.”
If Hobbes was still alive today, I would challenge him on that point. As Roland, I was not doing all I could to survive. I was doing all I could do to survive and preserve my dignity as a person. I could have freely drank from the toilet, disgusting though that may be, and quenched my thirst. For those who would argue about germs and bacteria, I’ll point out the sink was clean enough, though irradiated. Still, a little radiation isn’t going to kill me right away, and I had grown up in the Wasteland, where everything is irradiated.
No, I stole the water not only to survive, but to survive as a person. I didn’t care about what the people of the town thought of me. If I did, I wouldn’t have stolen the water and suffered another night without having anything to drink. I cared about what I thought of myself. I couldn’t bring myself to take the free option because the cost would be my personal respect. While these people had water, I was drinking from their toilet and their sink like a dog. I needed water, yes, but I wasn’t willing to do that much.
Humans, by our very nature as sapient creatures, possess not only the will to survive but the desire to maintain our dignity. It is not merely enough for us to get by from day to day, but that we must be able to also hold our head up to others who would threaten to take away our self-respect. Good and bad are societal concepts, imposed on us by the state and the people we associate with. Survival and self-respect are individual concepts, driving and defined by each and everyone of us as individuals. Humans survive within the constraints of society yes, and many say we are a social animal. However, when it comes to day to day survival, the drive to live will put the individual at odds with the society, especially when the societal constraints are what threatens the individual’s chances of survival.
Some will argue that self-respect is also affected by societal influences. I disagree. Self-image is surely affected by society, and for many self-respect is also determined by self-image, at least to some degree. By its very nature though, self-respect MUST be individualistic. If you lack self-respect and let society determine your worth, you are also in many ways sacrificing your drive to survive, even if you might be increasing your chances at the same time. Seems contradictory, doesn’t it? I know. But think about it, tell me if you disagree, all that good stuff. Going into THAT topic in this post would be so far removed from morality and survival, and this post is already long enough.
I like when games make me think, not just of a moral choice, but of deeper philosophy. I especially love when they do this with game mechanics rather than cut scene plot exposition. The Wanderer’s Edition takes a good game and makes it GREAT. Can you afford to be selfless in a world where the very world is inhospitable? Can you rise above the Wasteland and retain your societal ideas, your ideals of what the world should be like? Or will you lose yourself in the need to survive, abandoning society morals and comforts for your own personal survival? It’s an interesting question, and one I think more games should explore. Too often, games separate their story from the actual mechanics, especially with the larger name games. Game play is fun, but doesn’t match the story being told. I’m not a programmer or an artist, but I can tell you that when you keep story and game play separate, what you are doing is keeping the medium from evolving beyond simple amusement. You are creating an airplane novel instead of a classic piece of literature. Something that will get you through an otherwise boring day, but which will lay forgotten when the next great novel is released.
One of these days, I’ll have to do a whole post simply dedicated to telling a story through game mechanics…I’ll add it to the growing list of cool topics that I will have to eventually get to.
So, that wasn’t very focused…still, if you managed to get through it, I have rewards for you! Professional writers about video games discussing a similar topic using the games Fallout: New Vegas and Red Dead Redemption!
Andrew Bell at the Escapist magazine wrote an excellent article discussing the modern political philosophies beneath the games Fallout: New Vegas and Red Dead Redemption, focusing on Hobbes’s and Rosseau’s ideas on the State of Nature. It’s well done and was part of the inspiration for this mess of a post. If you are at all interested in this topic, I suggest you check it out.
Also from the Escapist (What can I say, they have good stuff some times), a good song written by Miracle of Sound about Fallout 3. It motivated me to reinstall the game and go explore it once more.
