Music Soulmate AU

I basically just rewrote this from Andrew’s POV

The first time Andrew hears what is soulmate is listening to he is in juvie.

In juvie they encourage troubled youths to listen to music. He has a radio and “free” access to a computer. But the music radios pass on is not exactly of his liking. And it’s not like he can surf the internet however he likes, not when the internet is controlled and censored.

To be honest, he’d never even thought he might enjoy music before his soulmate. His soulmate has good music taste.

Thanks to Pig Higgs he has landed in a juvie with plenty of rehabilitation programmes. He’d gladly avoid joining any of them, but his counsellor made it compulsory.

And so Andrew choses the music programme. That’s how he larns to play the guitar- just so he can play the songs his soulmate listens to.

It’s only when he gets out of juvie that he finally finds out the names of the bands and musicians his soulmate listens to. He buys their cds, downloads their songs, goes to their concerts and listens to them 24/7.

Out of juvie he also finds out that he has a twin brother who plays the drums and a cousin who plays the piano. And what is he even supposed to do with a brother he knows nothing about but start playing music together?

At first it’s mainly covers. Aaron sets the rhythm and Andrew strums his guitar. It’s quiet and slow, like their uneasy friendship. The more they get comfortable with each other the better they play together.

It’s only when their cousin Nicky walks into them playing an instrumental cover of The Ghost of You by MCR that he decides to join them. Nicky ditches his piano, buys a keybord and becomes an official member of their unofficial band.

The first time Andrew does the vocals of one of their covers, both Nicky and Aaron hit the wrong notes and then stop playing altogether, staring at Andrew with their mouths wide open.

It’s Aaron who breaks the silence with a screeched “you’ve always known how to sing LIKE THAT and you’ve never done it before?”. Andrew just shrugs, but from that moment on he becomes the designated singer.

Their unofficial band becomes official when Kevin Day joins the line up. He plays the bass, but most importantly he writes songs. And good damn songs. Plus his father Wymack owns an independent music label and he signs them.

Even with a contract in their pocket, Andrew and his band (now called The Foxhole, who even knows why, it was Nicky’s idea) have to cut their teeth. They slowly work up the ladder one little concert after the other. It is exhausting.

Andrew hadn’t signed up for crazied fans when he’d started playing the guitar with his brother in the attempt of making up for 14 years of being convinced they both were alone in this world. But at least the fans are growing the more and more numerous.

Last week they filled a small arena with 5 thousand people in LA. The posters outside the venue said “The Foxhole, SOLD OUT.” After the show Wymack had smiled proudly and told them that the recording studio would be booked for them all month long.

And that. That is one hell of a month. Andrew loses count of how many times he thinks about breaking Kevin’s hand.

But through the caos, the deadlines, and the mind-numbing recording sessions, Andrew has - well Andrew doesn’t have his soulmate. Not with him anyway. But he has a good playlist to come back to when he gets home.

He knows at what time his soulmate turns on his mp3 player. And every evening at 8pm Andrew takes one hour just for himself, sits on the sofa and religiously listens to the playlist his soulmate is playing. It’s a habit he took up in juvie, a habit he would never give up to.

The Foxhole’s first album jumps straight to the first position of the Alternative Music chart. Right on the day it comes out.

When they get the news Nicky is so ecstatic he jumps on the sofa like a child. Aaron hugs his girlfriend, lifts her up and makes her spin in the kitchen as they laugh and laugh and laugh. Kevin just smiles, which is quite shocking per se.

Andrew’s heart skips a beat only when at 8pm he hears his soulmate listening to The Foxhole’s album. And at that, just at that, his lips slowly curl up into a smile.

After that, Andrew’s life gets the more and more chaotic. It’s shows and interviews and world tours. It’s trying to set an alarm at 8pm even when he barely has time to breathe just to listen to a couple of songs from his soulmate’s evening music session.

It’s waking up at 5am when in Paris and cursing the European tour. And then it’s missing it. Missing it when he crashes on the couch and his meds take too much out of him. It’s having The Foxhole’s concerts set at 8pm.

It’s Andrew secretly hoping his soulmate listens to his concerts because Andrew can’t listen to his playlists. It’s Andrew wishing he’d stop hoping his soulmate would come find him after a concert.

Andrew is taken off his court-mandated meds during the pause between their last tour and the new album. The drug-induced mania wears off, leaving Andrew alone, parsing through the white noise in his brain and the thoughts that won’t leave him alone. Never never never.

One night he’s so drained out by the effort of overcoming his addiction and getting used to the new way is brain is wired, he falls asleep on the sofa before 8pm.

He wakes up at 2am, angry and frustrated and pissed off he’s missed his soulmate’s daily playlist. And if Andrew, frustrated beyond words, picks up his guitar and starts trying to put his thoughts into notes nobody has to know.

It’s not like Kevin will judge if he finds out. Kevin himself started composing to fight his own alcoholism.

But nobody really has to know. Not even when Andrew makes a habit of it. Picking up his guitar and humming along with the music he plays- trying to figure out what sounds right and what doesn’t. What eases the pressure on his skull, what makes his head hurt even more.

Nobody has to know, but he kinds of forgets that his soulmate *does* know. And Andrew tries so hard not to react. But when in the morning he hears his soulmate singing along to his new song, Andrew finds himself smiling. Andrew is sooo fucked.

Let’s not even talk about the somersaults his stomach makes when his soulmate starts playing awful upbeat songs whenever Andrew stops composing. He hates those songs, thanks but no thanks.

But his soulmate annoyingly persists pestering him with happy songs. And Andrew gets what his soulmate is doing, he knows his soulmate is doing his best to show him he likes what he’s doing, he gets it, he’s just not ready to admit it to himself.

He ends up telling Aaron. And it’s just because he needs to have someone else play with him. Just to test out a few things. Not because it’s Aaron.

Aaron who disgustingly smiles at him when Andrew shows him what he has composed. Aaron who knows he has a soulmate. Aaron who asks “it’s him isn’t it?” when Andrew puts his hands in his hair because his soulmate is listening to one of his sickening upbeat songs.

Aaron who tells Kevin. Fuck you Aaron.

Andrew knows Kevin would happily crack his head open if he didn’t need a singer and guitarist. He hears him mutter something like “that fucker knew how to compose and he never said anything before”.

They end up rehearsing the song together. First it’s just Aaron and Andrew showing Kevin and Nicky the ropes, then it’s the whole band. And if the smile on Kevin’s lips is any indication, the song is good. Damn good.

They end up including it in the new album. And Andrew is okay with it. But then Wymack hears it and decides it’s going to be the single paving the way for the album. Andrew doesn’t want to, it’s *his* song, it’s something he’d come to share with his soulmate and his soulmate alone.

He was happy with it becoming part of the album. He had anticipated how it’d feel like to hear his soulmate listening to their album and recognising the song. He had not anticipated the song becoming mainstream.

But he says yes to Wymack. He owes him that much. He still decides to do things his own way.

The Foxhole are supposed to debut the song during the first concert of their promotional tour. It’s Kevin who usually does the talking, but before he can start presenting the new single Andrew snatches the mic.

He feels Kevin’s eyes drill holes in his head when he says why he wrote the song, why he recorded it and- and that’s all because he has an annoying soulmate who supports him. And when he finishes Aaron is smiling (fuck you Aaron) and Nicky is staring at him with his mouth open.

If the screams and the yells and the choruses asking for an encore are any indication, the crowd loves the song. Andrew doesn’t care. His head is screaming “now he knows now he know now he knows”. And who would ever want to have anything to do with him. He’s fucked up. Oh he’s fucked it all up.

He grits his teeth through the concert, trying to prevent the walls in his head from crumbling down right in front of thousands of people. He regrets saying it but he misses his meds. They made this part easier, they didn’t let him dwell and spiral down into chaos.

When the show finishes he knows what’s waiting for him. A wall of fans screaming to his face that they are his soulmate- Aaron had warned him about it when Andrew had told him what he’d planned on doing.

He locks the door of his changing room and tires to breathe through the panic choking him. Just a few more minutes and then he’ll get out, face the fans and the media and the mess. He did this to himself. Just a few more minutes. Just a few more minutes- but the door of his changing room is thrown wide open. The intruder closes it back behind his back and presses his body against it to keep the door shut.

Andrew barely manages to say “What the fuck?”

“Lock picks!” the guy throws them a him. Andrew effortlessly catches them one-handed. The intruder flashes him a smile so bright it can’t be real. Just like the red curls and the blue eyes and everything else about him. Who the fuck is this man?

As if he’s reading into his mind, he says “Don’t worry your bodyguards will be here in a sec.” Another smile.

Andrew barely has time to open his mouth and reply when the bodyguards come crashing into Andrew’s changing room. And right then the stranger says: “By the way, I’m Neil and in the morning you always listen to Welcome to the Black Parade. Nice to meet you soulmate.”

"You have done remarkably well on your field exam" The examiner said standing a few feet in front of me.

"Thank you, sir" I replied in monotone.

"I have been directed to give this to you upon your success" He hands me a black folder with the Hydra symbol on the front.

They were that sure I would succeed?

"Thank you"

With that the examiner turned and walked away.

I knew the drill so I turned and walked back to my room.

I stood at my door. It was made of solid steel. It would be locked at ten O'clock tonight.

I wrapped my hand around the door knob and pushed it in. I could maneuver my room with a blindfold on. Everything had it's spot and was kept there. No dust. No mess. No problems.

I sat down on my bed and flopped the folder out in front of me opening it to the first page.

You and four others will be shipping off tomorrow at six a.m. to New York.

As usual there was no signature at the bottom of the page but instead a wax stamp of the Hydra emblem.

The good things was I could just use my natural accent and didn't need to add makeup to make myself look younger or older. Once I had been assigned a sixty seven year old cover, it took me at least an hour and a half to do my makeup... daily.

I jumped up from my bed to grab my backpack and pick out what to bring.

I loved missions because it meant I got to get out of here. I cast a distasteful look around the room.

I packed my clothes into the bottom of the bag followed by books and my MP3 player on top.

I dropped my bag at the door and dropped back onto my bed.

I let out a screen that rattled my ribs as the people in white coats plunged huge syringes into my arms, legs and neck.

I could feel it as somthing slow and sluggish worked it's way through my veins. The searing pain as the liquid made it's way towards my heart and through my body.

I could hear my heart pounding in my head and the way the people were whispering to each other as they started at me like I was a rat in a lab.

I hated it.

I hated the way they took pleasure in my pain and the way they stared.

But then the pain was back as an electric pulse shot through my body.

I let out another blood curdling scream.

I shot up throwing the covers off and let the cool air rush over my skin.

It was just a dream, just a dream.

I told myself over and over but some part if me didnt believe it.

I glanced at the clock on the table beside my bed.

4:30

I decided to get an early start to the day and got up to do my last minute preparing for the mission.

But the dream followed me around. It wasn't the first time I'd had it but this time it seemed more... real.

After having finished the most recent series of Genot Centre reviews recently, today I'm reviewing a new release on a label that I'm new to and that's also been added to my network of labels that send me review / promo copies of their new releases. This label is QUANTUM NATIVES, an online label that releases curious and experimental music with a lot of creative and Noise infused sound shaping as well as interesting concepts that goes along with a site on which all releasese are put on an actual map. Definitely an intriguing label that makes great use of modern digital techniques and involves audiovisual art and graphic design as well. The first new release I'm reviewing today of QUANTUM NATIVES is this album by Ain, titled ع, Ain is a collaboration between Egyptian based artist Amr El-Alamy and US based Matt Liston and on this album is a result of the exploration of "the contrast and connection between a place of militance and decay and one of lavish acceleration through a shared sonic-emotional language" as it says in the release description included in my review copy email I received. So, indeed the ideas, feelings and ingredients of the music on this album are rather dark and in no way moving in postive or bright directions but while the mood is dark the music still delivers a great immersive and sonically intense and detailed listening experience. As Ain delivers a great 8 track album of glitch / plunderphonics infused sonic pieces that freely wander from Noise to more melodic, sometimes repetitives parts that feels fresh and new and totally unique in its bass-heavy sound design and composition. Before I get into the music track by trak, I'll mention that my review copy of this album came with the 8 album tracks in 320kbps MP3 files, the album cover as well as 4 additional "landscape" artwork pictures. This will be mostly identical to the download you can get from QUANTUM NATIVES.

ع starts with the track Acid Tears - دموع الأسيد, a piece that features a melody played by a sharp metallic synth that's "spread" overtime, getting chopped up at points too, leading the music. This melody is placed over squelcy, machine like bubbling dirty sounding synth effects. It feels "militaristic" and alien at the same time, the machinery like synths having been morphed into molten steel/plastic structures of sound, until the second half in the piece where the main synth melody changes up and becomes sharper and more prominent. In this second half the synth melody gets increasingly intense and distorted as well as being even more compressed than in the first half. Especially at the end the synth sound reminds me a bit of Clark, though with a much more Industrial / Noise sounds added and a fuzzier more destructive sound. Very nice. This piece then smoothly moves to the second track Anxiety Vessel - كبسولة قلق which is very very bass heavy, compressed and distorted mechanic squelchy Noise murk, very nice. Only siren synths sounds, high pitched noise burst and resonant noise can rise above the massive earthquake of sound, very intense. End Time Rhythm - إيقاع النهاية features a more percussion heavy sound, metallic Industrial percussion that is and again nicely destroyed sounding by the very heavy distortion and compression. Distant hollow resonant Industrial hums, and filtered metallic synth effects add factory like elements to the shattered and rumbling Industrial soundscape as siren synths scatter and pan around in the Industrial rhythmic structures. The Industrial hums and drones give this piece a great base that the rhythms are built around and it does feel calm in a way as well. Great Industrial mood in here. Please Escape - إهرب لو سمحت then, is a short piece full of stuttery and panned Industrial and Noise percussion and rumbly low distorted sound. Very much a pure sonics based piece that features great sonic manipulations and an intensely scattered destructive cloud of ever evolving Noise sounds. Dread Tune - نغمة فَزَع moves in a more melodic plunderphonics based sound with clusters of music samples stuttering and being reversed and pitch manipulated into arpeggios. It's a pretty lengthy piece and a bit repetitive but the subtly changing synth / sound manipulated in the background, low saturated squelches, shifting high frequency sounds and background industrial sounds do add some nice progression to the piece which keeps it interesting and captivating to listen to. More sparse in the sonic imaging than other piece but pretty effective sonic manipulations and rather fun to listen to, even if the title says Dread Tune actually. Everything Is Crumbling Around Me - كله بينهار حوليا mixes classic harsh squelching screechy Noise techniques with Drill & Bass like heavy percussive sound manipulation with plenty of crazy stereo imaging effects being used too. Very murky and distorted sounding most of the time the constantly jumping bass and metallic sound heavy rhythms create some excellent sonic enjoyment which brings ع into an a more percussive direction. Melodic elements are kept to a restricted minimum in here and overall the track feels like this curious shapeshifting squelches mass of muddy mixed sonic materials, always moving, morphing and shapeshifting, nice. Club Horror - رعب الكلَب is the longest piece on this album and features a more Drone based sound full of glitchy metallic and reverberated Industrial percussion, tense distorted screechy tones and distant melodic patterns that create an ambience that is again darker and more visceral with the growing cloud of hissing glitchy Noise sonic scattering all around the sound image like a tense battle brought back to corrupted degraded sonic bits and pieces of sound. Hypnotic and subtly moving forward, this track is an intriguing Industrial soundscape. Devastation Assimilated - إِستَوعبنا الخراب is the final track of the album and features heavily distorted metallic sample stabs in a crumbling murky haze of Noise, both droning but also rhythmic, like an attack of sound both melodic but also dangerously destructive, it's bass frequencies quickly moving towards you like seismic waves. A particlaurly intense finale to this album, that with it's 33:49 playing time is a bit short but packs a lot of impressive, enjoyable but also convincing dark and tense Noise, drone and Industrial soundscapes.

ع by Ain is an album packing both dark and lighter soundscapes and rhythms filled with metallic, crumbling, sub bass quakes and resonant sonics as well as melodic patterns in several pieces that blends a feeling of terror and dread with elements that feel more hopeful. While these pieces often feel dangerous, Ain doesn't overdo their compositions and sound design and offers glimmers of light in the darkness of ruins and the often abstract nature of the tracks opens up room for many interpretations and sonic mind images. An intriguing and excellently created album of sonic imagery that I definitely recommend. This is a great listen for listeners into Noise, Industrial, Drone but also anyone looking for a unique sonic experience that will shake your mind and give you an intense physical listening experience as well as fans of experimental music in general.

Noise Pollution in NYC : Final Project Research Submission #2

BACKGROUND INFORMATION + HUMAN / TECHNOLOGY ASPECT: Health Effects

What is Noise Pollution?

Human Disease Caused by Noise Pollution

Whether we realize we are subjected to it or not, noise pollution can be hazardous to our health in various ways.

Hypertension is, in this case, a direct result of noise pollution caused elevated blood levels for a longer period of time.

Hearing loss can be directly caused by noise pollution, whether listening to loud music in your headphones or being exposed to loud drilling noises at work, heavy air or land traffic, or separate incidents in which noise levels reach dangerous intervals, such as around 140 dB for adult or 120 dB for children.

Sleep disturbances are usually caused by constant air or land traffic at night, and they are a serious condition in that they can affect everyday performance and lead to serious diseases.

Child development. Children appear to be more sensitive to noise pollution, and a number of noise-pollution-related diseases and dysfunctions are known to affect children, from hearing impairment to psychological and physical effects. Also, children who regularly use music players at high volumes are at risk of developing hearing dysfunctions. In 2001, it was estimated that 12.5% of American children between the ages of 6 to 19 years had impaired hearing in one or both ears

Various cardiovascular dysfunctions. Elevated blood pressure caused by noise pollution, especially during the night, can lead to various cardiovascular diseases.

Dementia isn’t necessarily caused by noise pollution, but its onset can be favored or compounded by noise pollution.

Psychological dysfunctions and noise annoyance. Noise annoyance is, in fact, a recognized name for an emotional reaction that can have an immediate impact.

Modern Technologies

“Recreational activities that can put you at risk for NIHL include target shooting and hunting, snowmobile riding, listening to MP3 players at high volume through earbuds or headphones, playing in a band, and attending loud concerts. Harmful noises at home may come from sources including lawnmowers, leaf blowers, and woodworking tools.

Sound is measured in units called decibels. Sounds of less than 75 decibels, even after long exposure, are unlikely to cause hearing loss.

However, long or repeated exposure to sounds at or above 85 decibels can cause hearing loss. The louder the sound, the shorter the amount of time it takes for NIHL to happen. Here are the average decibel ratings of some familiar sounds:

The humming of a refrigerator: 45 decibels

Normal conversation: 60 decibels

Noise from heavy city traffic: 85 decibels

Motorcycles: 95 decibels

An MP3 player at maximum volume: 105 decibels

Sirens: 120 decibels

Firecrackers and firearms: 150 decibels

Impact of Noise on Hearing: Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL)

Causes:

NIHL can be caused by a one-time exposure to an intense “impulse” sound, such as an explosion, or by continuous exposure to loud sounds over an extended period of time, such as noise generated in a woodworking shop.

Recreational activities that can put you at risk for NIHL include target shooting and hunting, snowmobile riding, listening to MP3 players at high volume through earbuds or headphones, playing in a band, and attending loud concerts. Harmful noises at home may come from sources including lawnmowers, leaf blowers, and woodworking tools.

Effects & Signs:

When you are exposed to loud noise over a long period of time, you may slowly start to lose your hearing. Because the damage from noise exposure is usually gradual, you might not notice it, or you might ignore the signs of hearing loss until they become more pronounced. Over time, sounds may become distorted or muffled, and you might find it difficult to understand other people when they talk or have to turn up the volume on the television. The damage from NIHL, combined with aging, can lead to hearing loss severe enough that you need hearing aids to magnify the sounds around you to help you hear, communicate, and participate more fully in daily activities.

NIHL can also be caused by extremely loud bursts of sound, such as gunshots or explosions, which can rupture the eardrum or damage the bones in the middle ear. This kind of NIHL can be immediate and permanent.Loud noise exposure can also cause tinnitus—a ringing, buzzing, or roaring in the ears or head.Tinnitus may subside over time, but can sometimes continue constantly or occasionally throughout a person’s life. Hearing loss and tinnitus can occur in one or both ears.

Sometimes exposure to impulse or continuous loud noise causes a temporary hearing loss that disappears 16 to 48 hours later. Recent research suggests, however, that although the loss of hearing seems to disappear, there may be residual long-term damage to your hearing.

NIHL occurs gradually overtime, difficult to detect until the damage is done

Factors at Play affecting NIHL (Not all about sound level:

Sound level/intensity - how loud it is

Proximity - how close your ears are to the source of sound

Exposure time - how long you’re exposed to the sound

The louder the sound, the faster it will damage hearing

The closer you are to the source the quicker it will damage hearing.

Minimize these factors! → solutions

Prevention + Solutions:

NIHL is the only type of hearing loss that is completely preventable. If you understand the hazards of noise and how to practice good hearing health, you can protect your hearing for life. Here’s how:

Know which noises can cause damage (those at or above 85 decibels).

Wear earplugs or other protective devices when involved in a loud activity (activity-specific earplugs and earmuffs are available at hardware and sporting goods stores).

If you can’t reduce the noise or protect yourself from it, move away from it.

Be alert to hazardous noises in the environment.

Protect the ears of children who are too young to protect their own.

Make family, friends, and colleagues aware of the hazards of noise.

Have your hearing tested if you think you might have hearing loss.

The best way to prevent NIHL is to reduce the noise if possible, and if not wear earplugs or other protective devices to protect your hearing. If you can’t do either of these, move away from the noise.

How loud is too loud? Measuring noise levels with apps

So, all the decibel charts and decibel scale charts presented so far give ideas as to how loud sound at a certain decibel may be. For example, 70 dB could be about as loud as city traffic or 140 dB may be as loud as a jet taking off. However, different cities will have traffic with different noise levels and different jets may emit noise at different intensities when taking off. In other words, decibels are hard to gauge. It’s certainly not as easily as estimating a pound of chicken or 10 inches of rope.

Tips for Avoiding noise pollution/solutions:

Wear earplugs whenever exposed to elevated noise levels

Maintain a level of around 35 dB in your bedroom at night, and around 40 dB in your house during the day

If possible, choose your residential area as far removed from heavy traffic as you can

Avoid prolonged use of earphones, especially at elevated sound levels

If possible, avoid jobs with regular exposure to elevated sound levels

ENVIRONMENTAL ASPECT: Impact on Central Park Birds

NYC Central Park

The park is frequented by various migratory birds during their spring and fall migration on the Atlantic Flyway. Over a quarter of all the bird species found in the United States have been seen in Central Park. One of these species is the red-tailed hawk, which re-established a presence in the park when a male hawk known as Pale Male for his light coloration, nested on a building on Fifth Avenue, across the street from the park in 1991.
