hello hello hello, how are we doing? the first month of the new year has come to a scarily fast close – i hope it treated you well! my january was....well, it had its ups and downs for sure. i ended up reading way more fics than i had expected i would have time to. incidentally, i've also been sleeping much later these days 😂 so, may i humbly present my johnlock fic history for january! in which i shamelessly stalked authors' ao3 profiles, gorged myself on omegaverse fics and feverishly read an insane number of short and mid length fics. i've also decided to feature two spotlight recs this month instead of the intended one, because try as i might, i couldn't pick just one and, really, there's no need to tbh. enjoy!

The life that Sherlock and John have together is rather unusual. Sometimes they lounge about the flat with their daughter. Sometimes they flee for their lives from a band of organ-harvesting criminals. Sometimes they shag. Sometimes Sherlock insists upon arguing with John about the Monty Hall problem for weeks on end. Somehow, they love each other. Somehow, it all works.

this! fic! it genuinely has everything. domestics, parentlock, hurt/comfort, bickering johnlock, the thrill of the chase, fluff, smut – it truly runs the gamut, and does so beautifully. Winning the Goat had me smiling and laughing throughout the whole thing. amidst the humour, arwa has managed to weave a more serious mood effortlessly, without ever deviating from the motif of the monty hall problem. the funny moments will have you laughing helplessly, the tender moments will have you getting all sappy, the smut will leave you hot and bothered, and you will definitely, definitely, get overly invested in the monty hall problem. (john is right and you can fight me on that)

It feels like the onset of winter, so gradual that you wake up one day and see frost decorating the windows and wonder when it suddenly became so cold...He lost John slowly, without either of them deciding that’s what would happen. The way to come back together must be so gradual that it’s almost imperceptible.

this is just the sweetest, slightly achy-in-a-good-way story of john and sherlock drifting apart before coming together again, as they always do. what i love about this fic is that it talks about an experience painful in all its mundane universality. but it also shows you that some bonds just cannot be broken. sherlock in this is lovely, patient and determined in his vulnerability.

I just saw someone saying they hadn’t been able to find any good Parentlock fics, which left me a bit baffled because there are literally hundreds (see my kidfic tag). Then I thought maybe they meant Parentlock with Rosie, which are a bit rarer but still far from difficult to find. So I’ve put together some good fics that incorporate Rosie and don’t just shuttle her conveniently off the scene.

An individual’s search for happiness while coping with the reality of unattainable wishes.John is here now, yes, yes he is. He and Rosie are back home in 221B with Sherlock, safe where they belong... but why is there still a hole deep inside Sherlock, wide and gaping and consuming? Does John feel it too? And what will it take to fill it?

Give It Welcome by glenmore (13K, T, Johnlock) Rosie Watson is commissioned to write a story about memories of her favourite gifts.

A Family Trait by intricatearticulation (12K, E, Johnlock) Set post-S4, John is back at home with Rosie in Baker Street. He's working on a lot of things, including building his trust with Sherlock once more. An emergency shift at the clinic jumpstarts the process, forcing John to leave Rosie at home with only Sherlock to watch her. Sherlock does his best and John makes a mistake, but everyone is happy in the end.

To Keep Quiet by Salambo06 (11K, E, Johnlock) Four days. In the end, that’s all it takes for Sherlock to accept the fact that there is a chance John might be feeling just as desperate for more as he is.Still, it doesn’t change the fact that they need to talk. Sherlock counts it down to four conversations in total, at least. He’s certain John is just as aware of this fact as he is, but still, Sherlock finds himself unable to think of any plan of action.

The Crooked Thing by bookjunkiecat (9K, M, Johnlock) A few years down the road, John finds himself back at Baker Street, raising his daughter with his best friend and about as happy as he's been in his life. Having given up dating, he focuses on Rosie, on work, on his partnership with Sherlock. John doesn't expect anything to change, but a question from his daughter about her mother leads him to watch the video from his wedding. And in doing so, John sees something he never realized before. The only question is, what to do with the revelation? Ignore it...or find the courage to act.

instruction manual not included by JenTheSweetie (8K, M, Johnlock) The next day, they very distinctly did not mention it. Sherlock was almost entirely certain that all he felt about that was relief. For a genius, Sherlock sure has trouble figuring out his best friend.

Whaddya think about parentlock sheriarty? as faras i've see people dismiss the idea as riddiculous as soon as its mentioned but i think that if well developed and justified it could work ya know. i mean its not like theyre incapable of growth eventhough maybe theyve never wanted children god forbid. its just strikes me as strange because its the only pairing i know without anything related to that. NOTHING

Back in 2012 when Parentlock was all the rage, I always had second hand embarrassment from it because all of these characters were trying to create their own spaces outside of normativity to continue nurturing these sort of unconventional, nonconformist threads in their personalities. So this idea of heteronormative domestic bliss by ways of being married and raising a baby and whatnot was one of the most ooc concepts you could ever apply to them (and I still think it is, honestly), cause it seemed to be the complete opposite of the type of life any of them wanted (be that at the time or in the future), or could ever have since they built careers around not having that kind of structure or responsibility in their lives. Just to be clear, having babies and being married isn’t heteronormative, but the way it was used and portrayed in fandom more often than not was.

Now with two more seasons of material to flesh things out a bit, I think the only character who managed to find a balance between both concepts would be John, and I use the word ‘balance’ lightly. After that life of being off the beaten path ended in the death of his friend, he sought out something more commonplace for his own sanity. That, too, didn’t end up being quite what he wanted or thought it was, but fully immersing himself in either world would have caused him to go seek out the other one eventually since both would have suffocated him in some way. He needed a little mix of both.

With that said, I feel like people want Sherlock to want that same kind of balance in his life as well. And I’ve definitely seen people who believe Jim could benefit from having the same balance. But - and again this is just me - it’s always come off as taming them as opposed to something that adds value to their lives and enriches their overall experiences. These are characters that have very cruel, dark, unpleasant, rough aspects of their identities that’s simply not going to go away no matter who they have in their life or what happens to them. The only way it seems that fandom knows how to get around that is to either pretend like that’s not the case at all (I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen Sherlock painted as this timid, innocent, wide-eyed detective recovering from a drug addiction by just doing the best he can as a little guy and making his way in the world as softly and quietly as possible), or to take the edge off it considerably to the point where they’re just depicted as grumpy and snarky instead so they’re better suited for a life of sweet, gentle love and tranquility (which is the ultimate goal in Parentlock fanlore). I think these two in particular would find that so boring and almost maddening.

Again, don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with wanting that for any of these characters. I’ve indulged in a little of it myself, sure. But I’ve never seen a parentlock anything that doesn’t bastardize their characterizations in favor of those things, which is where my problem comes in at (or they’re put through these horrible scenarios [kidnapping, death, etc.] on the way TO those things since you have to suffer and be broken before you can have anything nice in your life, apparently).

So part of the reason why you don’t see a lot of it in these parts (cause I do know there is a little bit out there; @sincerelyjimlock has written some off the top of my head) is because the foundations of this ship have always been about honoring that queer, destabilizing, ambiguous center their dynamic radiates from, and to make any aspect of their relationship super explicit is to take away from that core a little bit. Parentlock represents doing exactly this. Sherlock at the very least does come to see the value in a little domesticity and has some sprinkles of it in his own life now. But Jim (who I could argue was more curious about it than wanting anything to do with it) is the one who would have the hardest time finding a place for it in his life without thinking the whole thing to be the equivalent of a lobotomy.

Also, I’m not comfortable giving these two assholes another human life to add in to their mix. I’m not even wild about Sherlock being around Rosie if I’m keeping it 100% with you. It’s not that I don’t think he’d be great with her. He’d take it as a challenge to be extraordinary with her. But he has a lot of maturing to do himself and a baby is not really the learning curve I’d give him to start with - be that someone else’s or his own. Babies are not an opportunity to fix problems with yourself or prove how far you’ve come along, and I think he might fall in to that trap a little only because he’s had it beat into his head that he’s not really human and he’d be looking for proof to show otherwise.

And with Jim, besides the fact I don’t think he could ever be in the right mindset for it even with Sherlock around, a child is just straight up a liability for his criminal empire. Any time I’ve seen a Moriarty from another adaptation with a child, they either kept them completely in the dark about that side of things for as long as they can (it’s usually Moriarty’s death or some incident when they’re older that causes them to learn about one hell of an inheritance coming their way), or given them up\left them to be raised by someone else because they knew their lifestyle wasn’t fair to them since they deserve a clean slate.

The common thread, though, is keeping them away from the web because they can’t just walk up to their enemies and be like “hey, so, I have a kid now...maybe don’t touch them please? thanks”. That child would be a giant blinking target and Jim would know that. So he wouldn’t be able to maintain having a family he can guarantee will be safe, and given the attention and care they deserve, while also being a mastermind using this gig as metaphorical saw dust to quiet the ever present noisy engine in his head. The truth of the matter is he needs that web in his life way more than he needs that child. Trying to juggle both would be a selfish act, which is something I’d see him doing, but the numbers pointing towards this being a bad idea would win him over.

Also, you’d have to avoid a lot of skeevy themes that I often see with them individually in other parentlock dynamics like using this child to “fix” their neurotypicality, or highlight it in a way that paints them as giant children raising another child. Or particularly in Jim’s case, using it to gloss over his mental illness and suicidal ideation to make him less lonely, and thus less likely to put a bullet in his head when what lead him to that point is way more complicated and thus harder to treat than just giving him someone to cuddle.

So parentlock Sheriarty would have be really, really, really, REALLY well-developed and justified. Like you almost won’t even notice they have a child because it would change very little, which makes me nervous because something would need to change in order to make a life that’s healthier and more stable for a child than the environments a criminal and a detective currently live in. How to do that without losing them as people in the process is hard, in my opinion. Not necessarily impossible. Just hard.

It was just so weird that tfp felt COMPLETELY disconnected from the rest of the season other than the presence of Eurus herself. TLD set up for johnlock SO MUCH. The episode ended with Sherlock and John actually DISCUSSING things, establishing that John was never happy with Mary and he always wanted more and still does, John's inner self telling him to get on with his life, Sherlock being told that romance will complete him, Sherlock about to say that John is the one who does that before he's interrupted, establishing that Sherlock and Irene don't communicate regularly since John deduces it's Sherlock's bday based on receiving the text, and Sherlock explaining to John that texting sometimes is just human and doesn't really mean anything. So explain how tfp continues that theme. Answer is it doesn't. It's disconnected. At this point, I feel like they are not planning to actually follow through on anything barring some miracle. And I don't just mean johnlock, I mean anything. They have had so much opportunity to put other ships to bed and they will not do it, they continually play with every ship and tease it and even if they conclude the ship is no good or won't happen, they STILL keep bringing it up and I'm fucking so tired of it. They are going to continue to hint at literally everything but never confirm anything and it's so frustrating. Bringing up Sherlock's sexuality and long buried desire for a connection over and over and over and over again but never follow through. Bring it up and drop it on an endless loop. It's bullshit and it's NOT COMPLETING THE NARRATIVE ARC THAT THEY BEGAN. Johnlock WOULD complete that arc and I'm so mad that they're cheating the characters as well as the audience in this way. The ad/lock shit drives me CRAZY Because Irene is literally in one episode. I don't even count tsot or tab because she didn't even really show up it was like the creators just didn't want us to forget about her existence. But they're doing the same shit with sherl0lly. I mean it is made VERY CLEAR that the tfp moment is anti-sherl0lly. Sherlock does not love Molly romantically, Molly loves Sherlock unrequitedly, it's the entire point of the scene. Of course you still have sherl0llies trying to say that Sherlock really did mean it (uhh no he doesn't, mofftiss are assholes and being mean and they give zero shits about Molly even though she's their original character). I don't care about the fact that they made Sherlock say those words to Molly. My issue with the scene is with the erasure of Molly's character development. Suddenly she's no longer moved on from Sherlock and she's once again desperately in love with a gay man. I am so fucking done with that bullshit. I understand Loo Brealey getting defensive- I mean it's her character and playing Molly the way she's written is her job. It's not her fault mofftiss cocked it all up. But honestly the amount of times we have listened to sherl0llies freak out about how we are misogynistic toward Mary or whatever or how the writers a misogynistic toward female characters and suddenly with the misogyny is very directly pointed toward Molly they just ignore it and say that Sherlock really does love her it's so fucking ridiculous. I guess misogynistic writing is totally okay if they think it's good for their ship (but apparently they weren't watching the scene very well because it's NOT good for them but I digress). Mofftiss is cheating everyone here, not just johnlockers. The entire audience as a whole would benefit from a complete character arc of ALL the characters. Mainly Sherlock and John as they are the lead characters but Mycroft and Molly and Greg would also benefit from completion of their journeys and NO ONE is getting that. They are just building toward nothing and making their characters take two steps back for every step forward. It's so freaking annoying. And we get a few moments of domestic parentlock which I LOVE and can't wait to write some fluffy fics about it, but we are left kind of scratching our heads. Like...okay so johnlock then? Did John move back in? Are they just two bloke buddies raising a baby for some straight reason? Why is John still wearing that stupid ring it's been like a year and Mary told him to get the hell on with his life months ago? And for the last time, EURUS IS NOT GROUNDBREAKING IN ANY WAY (though Sian did an amazing job with her).
