Summer rains always seemed to come from a particular ring of hell. At least, that’s what Barty’s always thought, even as a kid. Not thunderstorms, mind. Those other rains, the endless drizzles with no chance of really stopping, they worked fine for slushy winters when no one wanted to be outside anyway, or bright springs, when it just meant there’d be a slight breeze and water for his mother’s flowers.

But summer rains meant oppressive humidity for days on end before hand, and a chilling wind as accompanist to an already dreadful piece. And, so in the middle of this hot summer day clouded over by the Devil’s clammy grey palms, Barty was currently standing shivering in a pair of shorts and a tank. He cursed to himself as he realized rather quickly that he’d have to remove his trainers and socks, unwilling to stand in wet, spongy shoes for even a second. 

As he bent down to take off said trainers, he saw a pair of nicely shined oxfords appear smartly on the pavement in front him. Quickly, Barty instead cast a water-repelling spell on his shoes and straightened, noting the shoes were attached to an accordingly well-dressed man. By the time Barty’s eyes reached the man’s face, he was already embarrassed, curving his shoulders a bit to fit completely under the other’s umbrella, which was politely cocked at an angle to allow him underneath of it. . 

Of course, it had to be Rodolphus. Because the older man didn’t see him as enough of a brat already, he had to be caught in his summer wear soaking wet and in the middle of removing his shoes. Biting back a groan, Barty instead smiled tersely and dipped his head towards the other man in a nod, willing the flush creeping its way up his neck and into his cheeks to go away.

“Thank you, it’s not every day I get caught in the rain with nothing to protect myself,” he said self-consciously, fighting the urge to rub the back of his neck like an embarrassed school boy. Instead, he reached forward to take the handle of the umbrella. “Merlin, this is embarrassing enough already without you holding this contraption like some sort of house-elf. Let me do it; I’m taller anyway.”
