Tears of Blood
Remember when I said I’d do a mini series? Yeah. Sorry it took two weeks, but it’s here now.
CW: 1st person POV, post- apocalypse, orphans, minor deaths, gun, gun violence, death by gun violence, vampire whumpee, captivity, shady apocalypse survivor group, ask to tag more
———
The thing I can remember most about it my life is being alone.
When I was very young, I lived with my sisters. But when the land started to decay, and strange creatures were found roaming, my oldest sister set out to ask what was happening. She did not return.
For a long time, it was just me and Lola. She forbid me from going outside the far gate, which separated our home from the rest of the world. For a long, long time, I didn’t know anyone my age. I didn’t know anyone at all. Just me and Lola, Lola and I.
And then, suddenly, it was just me.
A man tried to come into our house. He had a weapon that I’ve never seen before, but it made a very loud noise. Lola told me to run to the lake that was visible from our house. She had a shed there. I was supposed to hide there and she’d come for me.
But she never came. When it got dark, I went back to the house. They were both dead in the front yard, stranger and sister, not too far from one another.
So I’ve been on my own ever since.
I learned many things from some of Lola’s journals that I took. Like how, after the land rotted, many people became desperate and wicked. They saw rapidly depleting resources every moment and monsters in the corners of their eyes. It was interesting to learn how quickly people turn on each other when they think they or a loved one is being threatened.
So with the land loosing power and something making people more prone to violence, the world descended into chaos. There’s supposedly still governments and large society, but most people live with just their family or a small group these days.
I wonder why Lola never had us join a group. We could’ve certainly used it over the years. A teenager and a kid living on their own off a dying land surrounded by monsters wasn’t that easy, I won’t lie. Perhaps she was just scared of the thing that got our older sister. I was so young, I don’t even remember her name, and it’s too painful for Lola to talk about. She was twelve at the time.
It must’ve been terrifying to suddenly be all on her own with a toddler to care for and creepy, violent strangers to look out for. She did her best, and I’m proud of her. I really miss her, but there’s not time to think about it. The little game we had at home is too hard to manage by myself, plus I want to join a group. I mean, the house also holds too many memories of Lola, but I’m actively trying to not think about that right now!
…It’s funny. The more you try to not think of something, the more you think about it.
Anyway! So there I was, setting off to a new adventure!
I could only hope everything went well.
I ended up finding a group!
So, there I was, walking along the road. I had been for days, and although I had found edible plants here and there, I was starving.
I happened upon a little creek and decided to get some water when I noticed some small white flowers. Wild carrots! They were small, but I took what I got.
After pulling them up and starting to wash them in the river, I heard a tiny gasp. I turned and saw two kids in the forest. Looking further, there was a cautious teenager also in the woods, further back than the kids.
“How did you know how to find carrots?” One kid asked.
“My sister taught me. She told me all about what plants to eat and ones to avoid. Where’d you come from, though? Is there a settlement around here?”
The teen huffed.
“Better question is where are you from? We don’t usually get strangers in our woods. At least not ones with friendly intentions.”
Oh yeah. Probably should’ve thought of that. I put my hands in the air.
“I don’t mean any trouble! My name is Yvette. I come from an area about 6 days walk from here. I was just my family, and after an attack, I left. Now I’m trying to find another group to live with. So, if there’s people here, I’d love to talk with your leader or whatever and figure something out. Please.”
I added that ‘please’ as an afterthought. Some politeness couldn’t hurt.
The teenager considered her for a long time.
“You can forage, right? Can you do it well?”
“Yes and yes. I probably know every edible plant in this area. Like right below your shoulder, there’s some mushrooms on that beech tree. We call it chicken of the woods. Very tasty.”
“We could use an experienced forager. No promises though! I’m just going to bring you to the leader.”
I nodded. I had expected as much.
We go back to their camp. There’s a huge fence with barb wire at the top. Two guards waited at the gate. One nodded to me.
“Who’s that?”
“This is Yvette. Her group got attacked, but she wants to join us. She can forage and stuff.”
The guards looked at each other.
“Bring her to the boss, I guess.”
Eee, I’m so excited and nervous! This is all so weird.
They lead me through the camp. There’s lots of people here! Maybe 20 or 30. More than I’ve ever seen. I can’t wait to meet all of them. Their eyes seemed to follow me warily though. One mouths something to me, but I don’t catch what it was. I don’t know much about people, but that seemed unnecessarily ominous. I hope this isn’t one of those weird groups that Lola was always scared about.
There’s a big house at the center of town with a barn attached. An old man sits on the porch, but quickly stands when we arrive. I think he’s the leader.
“What is this? Who are you?”
Everyone looks at me. Apparently it’s up to me to defend myself.
“Oh! Um, hello. My name is Yvette. My family was attacked and I was the only one left. I can fight and I’m fast. I am a experienced forager. There’s so much food right outside your gates that is going unused. I’d do my part and be an excellent member of this group. I’d really like to join, if you’ll let me. Please, uh, sir.”
The man studied me, then glanced at the barn.
“Let me show you something. Then when can talk.”
He started to walk to the barn and I followed. The teenager and the guards looked afraid. One of them even grabbed my arm.
“Are you sure, boss? Isn’t it dangerous-“
“I’m sure. We have to be very careful about kind of people we bring in here. And don’t worry,” he said, turning to me. “I can keep the danger in check. You’ll be fine.”
There’s something very wrong with this place. I don’t like this man or his barn. I would like to leave. Something in me tells me this is my only chance.
“Actually, I don’t think I want to-“ My voice dies in my throat as the doors to the barn swing open.
Immediately, there’s a rattling and the sound of something scurrying. Twin red lights shoot forward at us. The guards swear and jump back, as do I, but the man stands still. There’s a clang, and as my eyes adjust, I see that the thing inside the barn had to tried to run, but a large, thick chain kept it back. The red lights were it’s eyes, glowing scarlet irises staring at the man. It’s mouth was tapped shut, but I knew that sharp fangs lied beneath.
I had heard of this creature only once before, when Lola told me why she thought our oldest sister never returned.
“A vampire… It’s a vampire.”
The man nodded.
“The secret to our success. No one must ever know.” He studied my face. “You seemed so eager to prove yourself before. Will you still stay, dedicate yourself to the group?”
I didn’t really want to find out what would happen if I said no. Besides, I was probably just being paranoid. I had never met anyone outside my family that I can remember. These people weren’t weird or threatening. It was fine, I was fine!
“Yeah. I mean, yes! I will dedicate myself to the group and be a good member. I won’t tell anyone about the, uh, vampire.”
The man eyed me suspiciously.
“Time will tell, child. For now, get some rest. You,” he gestured to a guard. “Take her to her room.”
Despite all my self assurances, I still felt really, really bad feeling about this.

Album(s) Of The Month: January 2024
Something I wanted to try this year is talking about what I would consider to be my album(s) of the month. These may be albums that are new, or they’re just albums I’ve been listening to, and I sort of wanted to start this series as a way to document what I’ve been listening to throughout the year. I may end up talking about albums that I already reviewed, or going back to albums that I haven’t listened to in awhile, but these are albums that I’ve been playing the most throughout the month and that summarize the month for me. These aren’t my favorites of the year, although oftentimes they may be, but these are just albums I’ve been playing a lot. I may want to do between one to five albums, and sometimes it may just be one, but I want to put a cap on it at five. This year, kind of like last year, I don’t want to overwhelm myself with music, so I’m only really listening to a handful of albums over any given week, including new releases. I don’t want to talk about everything I listen to, or listen to everything, but I still wanted to highlight a few things at the end of the month that I’ve been listening to a lot.
Lil Dicky - Penith
The first album of this year that I can say I really love, especially in the sense that it’s already my album of the year, and it’s surprisingly by rapper Lil Dicky, who put out his sophomore album, Penith. This is supposed to be the fictional album from the show Dave that be produces and stars in, which is about a fictionalized version of him, real name Dave Burd, and his career, and this album is composed of songs in the show (most of which were just snippets, so these are all full versions of songs). This album is a ton of fun, especially if you’re already a fan of his work, or the show, because the songs do make more sense in context, but I had a blast listening to this even without watching the show first. Even afterwards, I still love this album, and within in the context of the show, it’s even better. The album relies on a lot of Dicky’s usual shtick, but there are some insightful and emotional moments here, too, so there’s a nice variety of ideas and sounds.
Neck Deep - S/T
Neck Deep surprised me by putting out their best album, well, ever. This is my favorite Neck Deep record, and it’s telling that it’s a self-titled album. These pop-punk vets got their start more than a decade ago, and they were part of the up and coming pop-punk resurgence that happened in the early 2010s, but they’re part of the old guard now, and this album is a reinvention / return to their classic sound but with an older outlook, and in that respect, it works wonders.
Beartooth - The Surface
This month has been mainly spent revisiting a few albums from the past few years, including Beartooth’s latest, The Surface, from October of this past year. I really love that album, and it was in my top five of 2023, but it’s held up quite well. This was my favorite metalcore album of 2023, and of the last few years, really. I just love this album, and I wrote a whole piece recently about why this album holds up so well.
The Home Team - Slow Bloom
I also spent a lot of time this month listening to The Home Team’s newest album, Slow Bloom, much to the request of my buddy Jake, because we debuted a new series on here where we recommend each other albums and talk about them. I recommended the newest Bring Me The Horizon album, Post Human: Survival Horror, and we talked about those two albums, so instead of going on about how good those two albums are and what they mean for metalcore, go check out our piece on them.

Selected sections/summary of Esteban's and his Race Engineer, Josh Peckett's interviews in the Alpine F1 Team Inside Season 2022 Book. The book is in french so I used google translate.
How they met (and met again)
They met in 2016 at Manor. Josh was Pascal Wherlein's engineer at that time. Stuart Barlow, Esteban's Performance Engineer was also in Manor in Pascal's side of the garage.
They all met again in Renault at the end of 2019. Josh was Esteban's Performance Engineer then while Stuart was involved in the test program with the young drivers.
When the opportunity arose they all thought about reforming the team they had in Manor and Esteban pushed for Josh to be his race engineer in 2021 alongside Stuart as his performance engineer.
Their Relationship
Esteban: "There are a few people with whom it clicks right away. We understand each other very well. Age may play a role and makes us more on the same page (they are only about 6 years apart)".
"We're very close, I see Josh, Stuart, Dave and Mathieu, my whole team on my side of the garage, more often than my family. We have small dinners before the races. I also meet them in the simulator when I go to the Enstone factory. These are people I really like. They're more than coworkers. It's a big family."
Josh: "Given the time we spend together over the course of a season, it's better to get along humanly. It would be very difficult to work with a driver with whom you have no affinity. That would be quite embarassing even. I've been lucky so far, because I've always gotten along well with the drivers I've worked with. It is natural to respect each other's schedule. Esteban has a lot of commitments and obligations between races, so I know there are days when he won't want to talk about work. So I just send him a little message to get some news and it's much better that way. We have to find the right balance."
The role of a Race Engineer
A performance engineer will focus on two or three really specific engineering tasks. In comparison, a race engineer needs to have a more global view of the situation. They have to manage a small teams of mechanics, engineers, tyre managers, etc. There is a more managerial aspect compared to other more specialized positions.
A Race engineer acts like a filter for the driver. It could be overwhelming for the engineer to hear multiple voices in the headset and to know who to listen to first, and to quickly know what interests you at this or that moment. But it gets easier over time.
Communication between driver and engineer
Josh: "With Esteban, it's clear from the beginning. We try to stick to the essentials with brief and straightforward exchanges, but it's rare to have prolonged periods of silence during the race."
Esteban: "Josh has voice that carries and knows how to calm down, even though I'm still very calm when I'm driving. It's essential for us to be understood on the radio. Above all, he has this ability to anticipate, so that he gives the right information at the right time. ....having the data without asking for it is very satisfying. We save a lot of time when the engineer is one step ahead."

"IT'S PERFECT AND IT'S APPALLING. DISCHARGE ARE ABSOLUTE PUNK FROM STOKE..."
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on a somewhat backhandedly positive review of the "WHY" mini-LP/12" EP by English hardcore punk band DISCHARGE (published by "Sounds," I think), and released on Clay Records in May/June? 1981 to mostly positive reviews and an even better charting position -- #1, in fact.
"WHY" REVIEW: "Okay, people. Did you ever wonder what the best album of 1981 was? Well, I'll tell you, 1981 brought us a new form of music. It's been called hardcore since 1979 I guess, but DOA, when they put out hardcore 81, they exemplified a new form of music. And uh, well I'll tell you this is beyond hardcore, this album, holy shit man. To call this album hardcore would be like putting frilly pink on it and spraying it with perfurme. Because this is DISCHARGE and this is the eleventh best record in the history of the human being.
Holy shit now what else can we say about this now because this is serious that we're talking about here. The fuckers. When Phil Sutcliffe reviewed this album in New Music Express or Sounds? he said that this album he never wants to listen to again, and it's putrefaction perfected, but he gave it a five star review. Which I find interesting. Um, the horrors of war. Pure hell. It's funny, everything I thought about saying last night I forgot. 'Cause I guess that's what this album does to you. It kinda just makes you speechless and stuff like that.
Discharge, when I got into DISCHARGE was June 1981, the month that this came out. And I started with "Decontrol." And I thought I could handle it. But I'll tell you Discharge was the first band that made me go pale. And to have this even heavier than "Decontrol" was like just, I couldn't believe it. So, considering I forgot everything I was gonna say about this album because it's all in the daytime and I haven't got high yet. We'll just have to go with the incidentally's.
Incidentally, this album was used as a retort from Lou Barlow to J. Mascis on a SEBADOH record.
Incidentally, this album includes the best bass player in the world, Roy Wainright. Who, at the time that this album came out I thought Stanley Clarke was the best bass player in the world, but once you hear this album you know what I mean. And also, "Is This to Be," which is on this album, is the forty-eighth song in the history of the human being. And "Ain't No Feeble Bastard" is the forty-ninth best song in the history of the human being.
So, I think this is the third line-up on this album. It's friggin' Roy Wainright the bass player, friggin' Tony Roberts on guitar, Kelvin "Cal" Morris on vocals and they had Dave "Bambi" Ellesmere of THE INSANE on drums."

{ text; Valerie with the ginger hair }: now now, baby, don’t be that way. There’s only two of you, and I don’t flirt with her.
( txt ; Barlow from Salem's Lot ) : Hm, I don't know. Might need all those rooms for all my ghostly visitors. ( txt ; Barlow from Salem's Lot ) : Hey, I never said he wasn't. I'm sure he loves his mother a normal amount and has never killed some unsuspecting girl in the shower. ( txt ; Barlow from Salem's Lot ) : Too late. I'm being that way. What's her name? Where's she live? I just wanna talk...

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ epic animated musical Moana 2 takes audiences on an expansive new voyage with Moana, Maui and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers. After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.
Directed by Dave Derrick Jr. with music by Grammy winners Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, Grammy nominee Opetaia Foa’i, and three-time Grammy winner Mark Mancina, Moana 2 opens in theaters on Nov. 27, 2024.
Released in 2016, Moana is set three thousand years ago when the greatest sailors in the world voyaged across the vast Pacific, discovering the many islands of Oceania. But then, for a millennium, their voyages stopped – and no one knows why. It is a story about an adventurous teenager who sails out on a daring mission to save her people. During her journey, Moana (voice of Auli’i Cravalho) meets the once-mighty demigod Maui (voice of Dwayne Johnson), who guides her in her quest to become a master wayfinder. Together, they sail across the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous monsters and impossible odds, and along the way, Moana fulfils the ancient quest of her ancestors and discovers the one thing she’s always sought: her own identity.
