Warnings ⚠️ - g/n reader, it’s a random kid not kidd himself- just wanted to clarify that bec i thought it was kidd, major crack

- If it wasn’t already apparent, Luffy has made it quite clear that he loves you VERY much

- let’s say you’ve been on this island for maybe about a month, and you love it there! The weather’s nice and cool, there’s a nice ocean breeze, and the sun is always out but not too strong

- you were sitting down on a bench with nami and robin, waiting for Sanji and Luffy to come back from their shopping spree

- suddenly, a kid appeared in front of you, holding a bouquet of flowers and a little hand made present

- “Um-! You’re super cool and pretty/handsome! And- I love you! Please take this gift and these roses!”

- the shock that just froze the three of you

- robin raised an eyebrow while nami burst out laughing, unable to breathe

- “BAHAHAHAHSUBDIDBD- YOU’RE LIKE 22 AND THIS IS A LITTLE ASS KID-“

- “Nami! Be nice! Um… Thanks kid- I like the flowers. But like Nami said- I’m a lot… Older than you.”

- The kid looked like they were about to start sobbing, so you quickly took the flowers and present to make the kid happy

- the present was a little origami heart and a butterfly, it was actually quite adorable

- All of the sudden, Luffy fucking tackled the poor child, flying across the sidewalk

- “Y/N’S MINEEEEEEEEEE!!”

- bro was hissing and growling like a feral monkey at the poor kid wtf 💀

- Sanji had to rip Luffy off the poor child and this grown man was throwing a fit, yelling at this kid

- “Y/N’S MINE! I LOVE THEM!” -luffy

- “I LOVE THEM TOO!” -kid

- “I LOVE THEM MORE!” -luffy

- “NO I DO!” -kid

- this argument continued for about 20 minutes. 20 minutes

- you had to drag Luffy and I mean DRAGGG him back to the sunny while he kept yelling at the kid about how he loved you more

- “Hmph! I bet i could take him in a fight!” -luffy (please keep in mind that this child is like 6)

- “Yeah ok luffy, don’t beat up a child.”

- “I’m a pirate! I’m already a criminal! HEY KID! GET OVER HERE IMMA BEAT YOUR ASS!” *feral screeching*

- “LUFFY NO-!”

- (rewatched marineford, I promise and swear I did not cry)

- ace is a bit more mature (not a lot) but he’s more mature than Luffy

- it was such a nice day! You and ace were hanging out on an island as a tiny vacation for the crew

- the crew got some ice cream, went shopping, and stocked up on food for the day

- ace, being the gentleman he is, carried all the bags for you, and even bought you THREE scoops of ice cream (y/n pls give me some this weather is ridiculous💀)

- ace was telling you about a story when he was younger, it was mainly about how Luffy was really stupid and loved to eat random mushrooms from the forest

- “He was SO dumb- it was really bad. He hallucinated for like- 2 days, and almost ate Dadan.”

- “HE ALMOST ATE HER?”

- “HIS TEETH WERE AROUND HER ENTIRE ARM.”

- bro Luffy is wild

- all of the sudden, something tapped you on the shoulder, and you turned around, not seeing anybody behind you

- “Um.. Excuse me?”

- The voice was coming from below, and it sounded like a kid’s voice! As you looked down, you saw this cute little child with brown hair and green eyes, their cheeks were bright pink, and they were holding something behind their back

- “Uh hi there! Did you need something from me?”

- “Um… I- I wanted to give these to you.. I picked them myself.”

- this kid was adorable, they were handing you a hand picked bouquet of flowers!! How adorable is that?! You smiled and pat the kid’s head softly, thanking him for the flowers

- ace had a big grin on his face, he found this kid absolutely adorable too

- “Uh- I think you’re super pretty/handsome! And- I think I really love you!”

- now this is where you both froze and stared at the kid with wide eyes, what did this child just tell you?..

- “I’m sorry what?” -you

- “I love you.” -kid

- “What?” -you

- this poor kid was about to cry, this was his first rejection after all 😭 and you could tell if this kid started crying, holy shit this kid’s going to SCREAM

- “Ok- sorry! I was just confused for a sec.. Are you sure you mean me? Not that little kid over there with the pig tails?”

- this kid was determined, shaking their head as they took your hands in theirs

- Ace was struggling, struggling not to just start cackling, the only thing keeping him from laughing was you pinching his arm

- “Ace don’t even think about laughing.”

- “I’m sorry- *wheeze* this is hilarious.”

- Ace’s face was turning red, bro looked like he was choking on food. But you really didn’t know what to say to this kid- I mean- you’re an adult and this is a literal child. Secondly- ace was your boyfriend already

- “Hey kid, how about I buy you some ice cream and we can talk about y/n together eh?” -ace

- The kid smiled and took Ace’s hand. How cute, your boyfriend was talking to this little kid about all the great aspects of you

- You heard about 1009 compliments today, and it warmed your heart 💜💜

- ace is awesome, 100% husband material

- doesn’t matter if it’s a child, girl, or animal, he’ll cut them up into pieces if they hurt you or his friends

- but outside of his tough demeanor, zoro was actually pretty loving, especially when the sunny was docked on an island and it was just a day to hang out

- he liked taking naps on you, literally anywhere (he sleeps the best on your ass 💀💀)

- today was not a nap day sadly, but as long as he was with you, today would be a great day

- you had dragged him along to stock up on cola and things for the ship, the whole crew was hanging out on this summery island too

- you weren’t sure why you hadn’t invested some berries into getting a leash for your boyfriend because oh my god

- this bitch keeps getting lost

- you could be looking at some cute shoes for two seconds. TWO SECONDS. And this man disappears, and he somehow ends up on the island next to the one you were on 💀💀

- but anyways, you were now holding him by his collar, keeping this dumbass marimo from running off 👍

- Aw- this little kid was so cute! How nice of them to give you some flowers, right?

ASL ‘Merica AU where Luffy LOVES to cuddle and spend time together with his family and friends (little guy is constantly and consistently as snug as a bug in a rug) and always hassles his brothers about it. Sitting down to watch a movie?? Luffy needs to sit in the middle for optimal warmth and comfort. Ace cooking dinner for them while they all chill in the kitchen? Luffy is constantly beside him, wrapped in a blanket, doing shit all but mooching off his warmth, bothering him about what he is cooking, and talking his and Sabo’s ear off (one of Ace’s favorite times of the day, has been caught secretly calling it ‘brotherly bonding time’). Sabo has a work from home day?? Luffy is ECSTATIC, setting up a pile of blankets and pulling out his nintendo switch and PROMISING to be quiet while his brother is clocks in (he fails and pouts when Sabo gives him “The Look”, still insisting that Sabo plays Mario Kart with him in the blanket fort during his hour lunch). He hasn’t seen Ace during the semester because he had to move for his mentorship?? Luffy is clinging onto him and asking to play video games or go outside and skate; Ace threatening to beat the shit out of his (and Sabo’s) ass(es) every five seconds while Sabo just points and laughs like a maniac (Ace doesn’t mind at all actually, he just can’t go easy on his little brothers). The ONLY motherfucker who can escape cuddling (if he is lucky) is Sabo, and that is SPECIFICALLY because sometimes he gets touch averse. Luffy tried to give Sabo a hug ONCE during one of these moods and got the most wide-eyed, fanged, angry “The Look” of all time, (Sabo felt like shit later and apologized while explaining the concept of touch aversion and boundaries, which Luffy did NOT understand but did respect) so now he tries to ask about Sabo’s mood before spending time with him or hugging him. The ASL brothers going home to visit Dadan?? Luffy is NOT letting her go for the next 15 minutes, and when he does he follows her around all day(he missed her) and tries to help around the house (he fails miserably and Ace ends up taking over telling him to go sit in time out with Sabo). Tl;dr Luffy is the cuddliest most quality time enjoying fucker around and I STAND on it.

ASL all being raised on violence so they genuinely don’t understand softer touch, genuine kindness at first

Like these three feral jungle kids bit kicked scratched each other full on brawled one another because it was the only way they knew how to show affection

(Garp’s fist of love is not exactly a great point of reference for any of them, Dadan was also likewise heavy handed but lets be real these brats kicked her ass more than she kicked theirs lmao)

Luffy clicks with Zoro because Zoro’s just built like that, he’s built walls and his dreams to become the worlds greatest swordsman and nothings gonna stop him, So when Luffy decks him, hauls ass flings him about, its how Luffy shows affection, rocketing at top speed towards Zoro whilst yelling his name because he knows Zoro can take it, the same doesnt really go down well with Nami or Usopp, theyre not built the same way— bruises and bumps and scratches, Nami whacks him over the head all the time for stupid stuff she says and Luffy finds thats familiar, to which Usopp is like my guy my dude thats actually pretty effed up holy hell

Usopp and Sanji being the first of the crew to show Luffy that affection doesnt have to be violent (like usopp sharing a cool beetle he found, Sanji ruffling his hair because hes mad hes gotta wait until dinner for more food)

Ace fights a lot because it’s all he knows how to do right, hes good at it, he wins alot mostly but loses just as many times because he overestimates himself, maybe after fighting Whitebeard 100 times he doesnt let up and Whitebeard catches on immediately after Ace has taken his ink like son, just because i can kick your ass doesnt mean you have to go looking for it. Ace confused is like huh? But isnt this like a bonding activity and WB concerned asks Ace what his childhood was like and Ace shrugs uh. Absent everyone? Like everyone, kinda acted out a ton for attention and stuff, the WBP appalled at Ace’s viewpoint on violence versus affection look to multiple ways in which they can smother their newest brother with actual kind affection, naturally it starts with Marco approaching him with food and no other motive than to be kind — Ace used to fighting tooth and nail to eat looks so suspicious its almost heartbreaking

Sabo who’s never known a kind word from his blood parents and only begruding respect and tolerance from Dadan — hes perceptive, the fact this bandit lady with the crazy intense face is allowing him to freeload with Ace n Luffy tells him a ton about her, she’s coarse and rude and everything Sabo’s parents hate so naturally Sabo loves her, (its a shame we never got more Dadan and Sabo :(((((() gravitates towards Ace because he’s everythinf his parents hate too, wild uncouth loudmouthed and violent and they get along, they beat each other up bc its how they tell each other theyre strong ive got your back

And then he loses his memories and maybe thats a good thing because Sabo learns kindness with the revolutionaries, he feels seen and heard and respected (Big Applause to Dragon and Iva for listening to kid Sabo beg and plead not to go back to his old life and went okay hes ours now chadmindset love to see it) he learns that violence and affection are a double sided coin, that he can use his skills to fight and protect those that cant do it for themselves

ASL are a rowdy set of rabble rousin kiddos but its really nice to see how they develop as they got older bc of the people they encountered who help them understand theyre not alone as they think they are

“Dadan!” you shout while opening the worn-down door of her house. “I got the kids!” Ace snorts and crosses his arms over his chest. “I’m not a kid. These two are. I’m their older brother.” You roll your eyes as Sabo kicks Ace in the back. Luffy ignores them both, runs to you again, and tugs at your shirt. You look down at him and see drool pooling at his mouth. “Where’s the food? You said if we’ll come back with you, Dadan will give us food.” 

“Want food, do ya?” Dadan’s voice rings behind them. Sabo lets go of Ace’s hair at once and Ace puts Sabo’s hat back on his head. The two kids stand apart from each other and one can’t even tell that they were beating each other a moment ago. Luffy runs to Dadan and jumps onto her shoulder. “Oi Dadan! Where’s the food?” 

The older woman grits her teeth and it takes all her strength to not fling Luffy across the room. Instead, she slowly puts him back down and lets out a loud sigh. “Fine, you’ll get your damn food! Wash the floors first!” All three boys complain aloud but one look from the curly-haired woman shuts them up and they begin mopping the floor. “And you,” she points towards you, “go fetch some booze from Makino. We’re out.” You nod and head to the bar. Ever since Shanks had left, you had stopped going to the bar. That place held too many memories of you two together. Usually, you would straight up refuse to go there but today Dadan was in a very bad mood. It’s better to not rile her up any further. And so you walk down the painfully familiar roads and finally reach the bar. Makino is at her usual place, cleaning some glasses. There are very few people in the bar than used to be. You walk over to the counter where Makino greets you with a wide grin.

“Hey! I haven’t seen you in so long!” she exclaims as she walks over to give you a hug. You smile and hug her back, already feeling nostalgia hit you. Oh, how much fun you would have with her and the Red-Haired Pirates! 

Stupid Shanks! And his stupid crew!

“Makino, Dadan has asked for more booze. Do you have any for her?”

Makino put her hand under her chin and seemed to be in deep thought. “I don’t know actually. I think the new supply is arriving later. Will you wait till then?”

“I guess, I mean I don’t really have a choice. Dadan will kill me if I return without booze.”

“Good. Come have a seat. I’ll pour you something.” You nod and sit at your usual seat near the counter. Every now and then your eyes move to the adjacent seat, where he would be sitting with his arm around your waist, narrating his grand adventures. You close your eyes and try to get rid of those images but in vain. And so you resort to drinking the loneliness away.

Shanks enters the dimly lit bar, the familiar scent of alcohol and old wood greeting him, but it is soon overshadowed by the sight of you sitting at the counter, a glass of wine in your hand. The years have been kind to her, he thinks, as he makes his way over to where you are sitting, his heart pounding in his chest.

Before he can even say a word, you feel his presence behind you. I’m being stupid. He can’t be here, can he? Agonizingly slow, you turn around and gasp loudly, the wine glass in your hand falling on the table. His eyes meet yours and you feel your heart stop. Why is he here? How? 

You stand up from your chair and take a step towards him. None of you say anything. Shanks stands there, waiting to see your reaction before doing anything. You take another step toward him but you lose your balance and fall forwards. He leaps forward and catches you quickly. "Hi," he breathes, his voice barely above a whisper.

Your hands ache to just wrap themselves around him but the disbelief makes them dangle uselessly by your sides as he holds you up. “You look so… so-“

“Old!” comes a voice from behind him. Your head whips around to see Lucky Roux laughing his ass off with a lamb leg in his hand. “Damn girl! You look like you’re a single mother of three!” he adds as he takes another bite of the meat. Shanks lets out a sound something between a laugh and a sigh and sets you back on your feet. 

“And you look like you have drank the sea dry!” you retort back. “Did they kick you out of the Grand Line for causing drought?” He laughs again, clearly drunk, and Yasopp joins in this time. Shanks holds your wrist lightly and turns you to him. “Don’t pay him any mind. You look as beautiful as you were, if not more.” You smile at him and your eyes wander over his face, his handsome face you haven’t seen in years. Your hand automatically goes to his face and you run your fingers over his scars. “You’ve gotten more handsome if that’s even possible.” He smirks and runs his hand from your wrist to your shoulder. 

“Get a room!” Roux shouts and then chokes on the lamb. You laugh at him and Shanks lets go of your shoulder. 

Shanks takes your hand and leads you to your usual seats. The two of you sit down at the bar, talking and laughing as if no time has passed at all. After a lot of alcohol and catching up, you’re both sitting in silence, enjoying each other’s company.

"I've missed you," he says all of a sudden, his voice husky with emotion. You reach out and touch his face, tracing the lines and contours that you know so well. “I’ve missed you too, you dumbass,” you reply, running your thumb over his cheek. 

“Why did you come back, Shanks?”

“I had to. We had left something valuable here. We couldn’t possibly go further without it.”

You raise your eyebrow at his response. “What exactly did you leave here?”

“You. I came back to take you with me.” You let out a gasp and shook your head.

“Don’t joke with me!” He intertwines his fingers with yours. “I’m not. I want you to go with us.”

“But…But you said that it’s not safe for me…”

“I know. And it isn’t. But I cannot function properly without you. I have grown so fond of your presence that I couldn’t even look after my crew properly. A feeling of emptiness kept nagging me. It took a lot of alcohol and a dozen scoldings from Benn for me to realize that I needed you with me. Even if it’s dangerous, I’ll protect you with my life. Just come with me, please.” His voice breaks at the end and you have to stop yourself from saying yes immediately.

“But Shanks, what about Luffy? He needs me, no?”

He nods and rests his head on your shoulder. “I heard his grandfather is looking after him. He’ll be safe with him.”

“I guess so but..”

“Do you want to come with me?”

“Well yes but how will I tell that to Luffy? Oh yes, you can come with me! He’ll be so happy to see you and he’ll understand you better!”

Shanks lifts his head and shakes his side to side. “I can’t see him. Not yet. We promised to only meet again when he has become a pirate captain. You’ll have to go say goodbye alone.”

“Meanie…” you mumble under your breath. He laughs and pulls you into his arms. “Sorry, it is what it is.” You huff at his reply and stand up to leave. “Fine you asshole. I’ll go say goodbye. I’ll meet you here tomorrow morning then, alright?” He stands up as well and nods. “Alright, love.”

And then, without another word, Shanks reaches out and gently cups your face in his hands, his touch sending a shiver down your spine. His eyes search yours, seeking permission and reassurance. Finding nothing but love and longing reflected back at him, he leans in slowly, giving you time to pull away if you want to. But you don't. As his lips met yours, it’s like a floodgate is opened. Years of pent-up longing and desire surge through you, and you respond eagerly, your hands finding their way around his neck, pulling him closer. His kiss is soft yet filled with passion, a gentle exploration that speaks volumes about the depth of his feelings. You could taste the sweetness of his lips, and feel the warmth of his breath mingling with yours. Every touch, every caress is like a promise of all the things that could be, all the moments you have missed out on. When you finally break apart, you are both breathless, your hearts pounding in sync. You look into his eyes, and in that moment, you know that this is where you belong, in his arms, forever.

Modern au trans Ace has been consuming my mind lately so I thought I'll just share all of my headcanons or else I'll explode:

• Sabo was the first person he had come out to. It happened when they were around 9. Ace had always felt that something was "wrong" about him. That the way he acted, his interests and past times, and just how he would do things were "unnatural" or wierd". Once Ace became familiar with the conspet of transgenderism he just opened up to him, and was met with instant support.

• Immediately after this, Sabo gave Ace his (trademark) transgender haircut in the bathroom of Dadan's house. She actually entered it while they were there and upon seeing it she cried out of happyness. (Mothers know everything)

• Coming out to Garp was a bit harder for Ace since he wasn't sure how an older person would have reacted, I mean Garp just left there his grand"daughter" and came back to a grandson after all. But we all know that Garp would never discriminate, and plus now he has another grandson to train.

• Luffy arrived in his life after a full year after he had transitioned, so at first Ace wasn't sure how to exacly explain this to Luffy, but he did manage to open up to him after they officially became brothers. Luffy wasn't just an innocent kid, while he didn't fully understood concepts like transphobia, to him Ace is just his brother so if anyone is mean to him or calls him names he'll just kick their asses.

• Ace had been homeschooled for the 5 years that would have been him attending elementary school. Middle school was the first time he attended an actual school and at first he wasn't open or confident at all and was ready to just beat up anyone who tried to shit talk him.

• Surprisingly he made a few friends. They were mostly just Luffy's friends who were older than him or his friends's siblings, but he appreciated it anyway. His absolute best friend ever tho is Kuina. I hd her as non binary using she/they so its just trans supporting trans, and they also have like a million of other reasons to be friends but those were already pointed out.

• His top surgery was payed by none other than his father Newgate. The Whitebeards pirates would be just this one tatoo shop Ace works at that Newgate he opened after "retiring" from biker gangs and stuff.

• Obbligatory T4T Yamace, but we all already knew this, didn't we?

• Ace gets the best older trans guy advice from Franky. Because to me, he is just what every trans guy aspires to be, cool and hardboiled. And who wouldn't want to get advice from the dude who did his own top surgery in his father's mechanic shop at 15?

These are all from me, but feel free to add your own or elaborate on the ones you like.

Trans Ace is so real to me that I quite literally can't imagine him being cis. It's just so,,, Weird to me. And I absolutely love everything you said. I definitely think Sabo was the first one to know and the one who helped Ace the most with his transition, also telling Garp, who actually is way better (if you can say 'better' when something isn't even 'good' but yeah) at raising boys. At least he understands them better. So I think he wouldn't have a problem with it at all even if he's more on the "I don't really get it that much, kid, but as long as you're happy" type of vibe. I agree with everything,, When he was younger he really didn't interact with many people and usually preferred to be alone. Teachers considered him more of a problematic kid than anything, and always compared him to Sabo with the typical "how are you like this when your brother is just so polite and smart!?" but then Sabo always ends up fighting the teachers for saying that shit in front of the class and Sabo stops being so perfect in their eyes (also he starts rebelling himself a lot against the educational system lmao). And not to talk shit about Garp, but talking shit about Garp I'm sure Ace would get in trouble a lot and Garp wouldn't show up to the meetings with Ace's teachers. That only makes Ace feel lonelier and everyone thinks he's extremely troubled. When he's literally a sweetheart to both Sabo and Luffy,, When he meets Luffy's friends, he starts to open up to people. He still gets in a lot of trouble, honestly, but that's just him. I think his classmates find out about him being trans, of course, and not a lot of people are okay with that. He truly wants to fight them but he knows that if he keeps going like this he'll get expelled and he doesn't like the idea of leaving Sabo and Luffy alone ('doesn't like the idea' meaning he almost gets expelled and Sabo had to scold him and tell him that even though he has his own friends he doesn't know what he would do without him in school), so Luffy and Sabo are usually the one defending him a lot of the time since the teachers, even though they're chaotic, don't really hate them (because look at those cutie patooties how could you hate Luffy???? He gets along even with teachers). The Whitebeard pirates accept him with open arms and he finally feels he has a place to belong to. Newgate doesn't even offer to pay for the surgery, he just pays without telling him first because he knows Ace wouldn't have let him do it otherwise. He's so so grateful for them. And his brothers. And his friends. And everybody that has ever supported him. I think that he has lots of issues with depression and self-image and he often has a hard time when he acts impulsively, but Newgate always helps him. He grounds him. Gives him something to focus on. And Franky is soooo fun to be around. Newgate tells him to go see Franky and give him the money he owes him, and that's how they meet, basically. It's obvious he's trans because he goes shirtless all the time and scars are there and everything... And Ace just has to ask about his experience. Franky helps him gladly. And it's not only cathartic but also very comforting. He also meets Robin there!!!! Because married Frobin in this one. And I think Ace would absolutely love her because she keeps being oh so nice to him. She kind of reminds him of Makino, and it's extremely sweet. I think Ace now goes to help Franky from time to time when the Tattoo shop doesn't really need him there or, well, whenever he wants to because he also is extremely interested in bikes.

T4T Yamace my beloved.... Guys being guys. Dudes being dudes. I think they meet because Newgate tells Ace something about this man Kaido (leader of a gang) who owes him lots of money or something or did something very nasty to him yadda yadda Maybe they just have beef from when Newgate was into the gang stuff. And Ace keeps saying he should go and settle things with Kaido and beat him up for that, but Newgate is retired and he really, really doesn't give a single fuck about it. Lmao. Ace says he could take down Kaido himself. Newgate laughs. Ace is too proud. So he ends up looking for Kaido and fighting Yamato late at night in the street and,, Well. You know how it goes. They become daddy issues besties and turns out Yamato does not want to follow his dad's steps. Ace is curious about Yamato's experience because he doesn't seem to want to have surgery or anything, and they keep bonding over their pasts and family and Yamato ends up joining the friend group. And it's so cute. Newgate can see the kid is in love because every day he waits for Yamato to come pick him up to hang out. Or maybe he begs to get out earlier to go see Yamato. He keeps talking about Yamato,,, All the time. Even Sabo and Luffy are done with him. It's endearing.

I see a lot of people excusing Garp's "inaction" at Marineford, because he was loyal to the Marines for decades and still refused to act etc etc. But like... He took out Marco. He took out the second strongest fighter on Ace's side. It'd be like if someone took out Zoro during their fight against Kaido's crew. How is that inaction??? He actively aided the Marines up until he decided to take one punch from a weakened Luffy, then sat on his ass and watched as Ace became a donut. The man is a rat, and Dadan should have hit him harder.

Garp gets a lot more forgiveness than most other marines in fandom spaces and I'm really not sure why? I think he's a fantastic character, and people think he's cool, but it rubs me the wrong way when people see HIM as a victim of Ace's execution. Garp is the hero of the marines, a literal walking propaganda piece for them - and in the moment of Ace's death, he picked his job over his family. That, of course, is supposed to be the moral question there for Garp, but feeling sorry for him, or Garp feeling sorry for himself, is something I honestly have to laugh at.

The amount of people who say "There was nothing Garp could do!" when, yes, there was PLENTY Garp could do, he just didn't want to risk his JOB and his TITLE within the marines in order to do it. There were multiple instances Garp had to save Ace, but Garp had this "Well, too bad! You're a pirate, and that's the system!" mindset. But the thing is, Ace was a criminal from BIRTH - he literally didn't choose this. It doesn't matter if Ace CHOSE to be a pirate or a marine, if he EVER got found out for his blood, he'd have been executed, but Garp is too deep in the justice of the marines to seem to understand that nor EVER understand Ace's position.

But instead of Garp saving Ace, instead of the man who allegedly calls Ace his grandson doing anything about it, Whitebeard started a FULL OUT WAR to save Ace. And what did Garp do? He participated on the other side of it, because his job, his title, and his belief of the marine's sense of justice are more important to him.

We are quite literally shown to our faces, as Dadan beats Garp up, that Garp was selfish and wrong for what he did to Ace. Makino even tries to interject because "Imagine what Garp is feeling!" to which Dadan says "Imagine what LUFFY is feeling?! He's hurting more than all of us!" and Dadan beats the ever living shit out of Garp because - she's right! Garp DID let this happen, Garp didn't actively try to stop it, in fact, even worked FOR it, and Dadan is letting Garp know he has no RIGHT to feel sorry for himself for this.

As I've said before, I do like Garp - I think he's a very morally interesting character. But this idea that Garp couldn't DO anything, that Ace CHOSE this path so of course this happened, is bullshit. It's all excuses to feel sorry FOR Garp. I do not feel sorry for him, just like Dadan, I was mad at him. I still am! Current arcs are showing us that, if you ARE on Garp's side, and if he doesn't actually RISK his title, he will do his ALL to save you (talking about Koby). But if you impose a threat to his job and his title, and if you impose a threat to the justice of the marines, Garp will do little, if anything, to help you. Garp barely even raised Ace on Roger's request, that was ALL Dadan, and I'm team Dadan ALL the way cause she was the only one who really embodied what I was feeling towards Garp in that moment.

ANYWAYS, sorry for the rant! That all just came out because I have such heavy feelings about Garp's role in Ace's execution, and I see so many people painting Garp as a victim of that which I don't agree with at all lol. Thanks for the ask anon!

Original universe headcanons:

-Ace is proud of his freckles. He doesn't much know what his mother looks like, but he's seen his father's appearance and knows that Rodger doesn't have freckles. So he sees his mother through his freckles :)

-despite his name, Ace is the only allosexual within the trio. I do think ace is aromantic though. I just don't think romantic relationships suit any of them, personally

-sabo cuts his own hair. I read a SBS submission asking oda why sabo grew his hair out. Oda responded saying he does to hide his scar. He said that sabo doesn't exactly see it as a badge of honor. Which makes me uhhhhhhhh very sad yuh huh. But it also makes me imagine he cuts his own hair because no one else can get it right. How I draw him, his bangs are uneven so that his scarred eye is covered and his working eye doesn't get blocked out. It looks fine now, but the first couple times he cut his hair were ✨disasters✨

Modern au:

They share an apartment and it is very apparent who's room is luffy's by level of messiness. Don't get me wrong, Ace's room is messy, but it's messy in an organized way. Unlike Luffy, who is just... Who knows if there's a floor over there. No one's ever seen it.

Sabo's room is so clean it's boarder-line sterile. It also just doesn't look lived in at all. If he invited you over and you saw his room, you'd think he was a serial killer.

Sabo and Ace both have their own mini fridges in their rooms that are under lock and key so that Luffy cant get into them. little fuckin gremlin man...

There is a tally board on their fridge that keeps track of who wins in wrestling matches that break out sometimes, much like in the show.

Sanji owns a restaurant near their apt that they always go to. The three of them have a chokehold on the "Big-Ass Bowl of Spicy-Ass Ramen eaten the fastest" title as they are currently in a three way tie that not they nor anyone else can beat.

Ace flirts with Sanji and his brothers give him flack for it, saying he's just trying to get a free meal!! support your local businesses, Ace! pay for you meal!!

Luffy always be challenging his brothers to spontaneous races and is always surprised when he inevitably loses. Sorry lil guy, they just got longer legs than you, not your fault.

They love trying new weird food. Whenever they see some kind of afront of nature that a snack-food company put out, like buffalo sauce flavored pretzels or plant based jerky, they'll absolutely buy and try it. It never goes well. Ever.

Ace and Sabo are the main Money Makers for their household. Luffy is always trying to get a job, though. Under the off chance he's actually hired though, his employment is usually terminated sometime within his first day. He's trying his best, man.

Whenever theyre having an issue in their household that they dont know how to combat, they call Dadan for advice. Kinda like those scavenger monkey themed guys from the beginning of Skypeia.

also the reason he's not like that with usopp is because while yes usopp will whine and cry he gets his ass in gear when he needs to, like in enies lobby arc where he fought that bull(?) guy despite being afraid and knowing he'd be overpowered, because he had to help his friends, AND THEN he left and saved the day after getting the shit beaten out of him after sanji came to tap in. AND THATS PRE TIMESKIP!!! usopp is a scaredy cat but he gets shit done and WELL after hes had a few minutes to roll around crying on the floor

MARINEFORD SPOILERS

For a while I’ve been thinking about this but, I really feel like Ace actually didn’t need to die for Luffy‘s development? It’s really touching to think about it especially with how much Ace is being brought up in Wano, but it’s so much wasted potential. Luffy definitely didn’t need his whole ass brother dying in his arms to know he wasn’t strong enough for the New World.

Marineford would’ve been a great opportunity for Ace himself to develop as a character and get stronger. Like that was when he realized he was actually loved way more than he thought he was and that question he asked Garp years ago would’ve been answered...that he was indeed worthy of being born and he could’ve lived out his life there after improving upon himself now that he knew that. After he and Luffy were saved it could’ve been used as a chance for them to reminisce about the years they spent together and nicely introduce Sabo without making him feel like a cop out? (Makes me feel bad but I feel like he is one. I’m just glad he exists at all at this point and the S on Ace’s tattoo makes him pretty relevant since the Alabasta arc but I digress). It would’ve been better to have Sabo appear as another "secret" brother rather than a replacement brother.

And it makes all of what Luffy did in Impel Down and what he went through feel like it was for nothing. Luffy could've realized himself that he and his crew were just not strong enough for new world because he COULD NOT have gotten to Marineford without those connections and help and led to the strawhats still training for two years... Not to mention that whitebeard was right there and he could’ve done something to keep ace from getting fisted like how he was beating akainu up A FT ER ace was killt. Did he black out or something??

Cool things that happened because of Ace’s death that may not've happened otherwise:

-Law coming to save Luffy and establishing a background for their alliance

-Shanks showing up and seeing Buggy again

-uh....

-wait a second

-all those coulda happened anyways.

Law still could’ve been there as their escape and Luffy could've just been sleeping like he tends to do after big battles. And Ace could’ve been watching him sleep w a smile on his face while he reminisced about their childhood days perhaps??!!?!!

And you know what it’s never sat right with me how Oda just shows Luffy being upset about Ace’s death for, what in his time is only maybe at most a couple hours, and then when Jinbei gets to him he basically tells Luffy to get over it and says that the lives of those he still has should be enough for him to immediately stop being absolutely distraught over the death of his big brother.

I get that for readers of the time, those chapters (including the flashbacks) would be serialized over weeks or maybe even a couple months? In that case it might feel like Luffy had time to process it but like I said it can’t be more than a couple hours for him so?? Like if you’re gonna kill off Ace I’m just saying make it make sense!!!!!!

Sure remembering his friends can help a BIT....but Ace was his number one!!!!!!!!! His ace if you will!!!! His b w o t h e r..,,.,,., His big bwo................most loved person in his l i f e???? Not just that but the way Ace died? WAS KILLED???? RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIM?????? Dadan said it best when she said Ace was the one Luffy loved the most in the world......his bROHETR..............of 10 entire years. They spent all their time together and Luffy just? Gets over it......smiling like always even.......,,? No.......,,,....,,...no.................

The way his friends and family reacted to hearing that Ace was dead was panic on top of grief because they knew that Luffy would be suffering out of his mind in that moment and they wanted to get back to him so they could be there for him. No one expected him to get over it. With that logic it doesn’t make sense in universe that he did so quickly because it’s not even expected that you can just get over the loss of a loved one like that. It makes him seem callous tbh.

But then I got to thinking…and I have reasonable “proof” that Oda didn’t intend to actually kill Ace during Marineford: the fact that he hastily drew up a crew that Ace had started before joining whitebeard? But they were never ever relevant? And they didn’t show up at all during the battle when it would’ve been way more heart wrenching and awesome and fun if they had? Like Deuce and Kotatsu? Deuce’s design is way too intricate and thought out to be forgotten from the story if he was supposed to be there like that. Not to mention the fact that he was supposed to be Ace’s First mate

And who wouldn’t want to see a big cat fighting to save Ace???? They could’ve gotten a flashback story like Little Oars Jr. did before he died. They never even show up in the anime...even though there was a flashback where Ace went to thank Shanks for saving Luffy and Deuce wasn’t in his crew? Are you kidding me. I’m so mad.

It would’ve been even more relevant to how much Ace has actually changed peoples lives if they showed up.

ALSO Oda had to phone in a bunch of stuff after Marineford to make Ace seem more powerful than he probably actually was like saying he was offered a position as a warlord when, based off of his results in Marineford, honestly doesn’t feel very warranted. Ace actually feels like the least utilized character in the story since he died before he could really do anything. MR. 3 IS MORE UTILIZED THAN HIM.

And then Oda has to go and say that “if you die it means you’re weak” after he kills the only character he’s ever killed during the course of the story and it just had to be Ace (also Whitebeard). 🧍‍♂️ Seriously, maybe if fans weren’t so sure that Ace was going to survive past Marineford things could’ve been really different because I recall reading that many of them didn’t believe Ace was going to die.

It’s like Oda impulsively decided “you know what?? I’m going to kill him!!!!” And then after he did he was like “HAHAHAHA I BETCHA DIDNT SEE THAT COMING!!!!! WHAT NOW BITCHEEES AHAHAHAHA......wait............what now....”

And then he hastily scribbled up some bullshit like “uhhhhh Ace was so strong the government wanted to make him a warlord uhmhhh he had a 550 million berri bounty on his head” etc. And then he thought up some cool looking crewmembers and gave them some backstory and was like “phew! problemo solved. I can’t have Luffy out of commission for a long time so I’ll just make him remember his friends and get over it completely!!” And Luffy pays homage to Ace in the first New World arc by coming up with a new attack that uses fire and never uses it again…has Sabo come back in Dressrosa to inherit the mera mera fruit....and now he’s got this thing in Wano where Ace is all over the place and has even influenced Yamato..which is cool and all but...wtf.......... this and since he didn’t have ace show up all that much before marineford he didn’t expect him to be such a popular character.

It just shows to go you that Ace dying was never really a part of the plan, but Oda didn’t want to derail Luffy’s personality either. Honestly if oda at least just had luffy be straight faced or melancholy before he reunited with his crew, and brighten up only when he saw them again? 😔

It would’ve been cool if Oda put in little things like Luffy laughing for less time or laughing and then stopping like as if he remembered Ace’s death. Even though the Strawhats were so eager to get back to Luffy to comfort him, they don’t even mention Ace when they meet again. Picking up where they left off like nothing happened. It would be sad to see luffy laugh less but THEN JUST DONT KILL ACE IN THE FIRST PLACE...

Okay but what if luffy got his devil fruit a bit younger? Like he was 4ish when shanks brought it. Garp gets pissy earlier and decides to tie some balloons to his grandson and let the sky handle him while he makes arrangements with dadan.

But then it's a particularly bad day for luffy, and a strong wind carried him away from his island, he ends up falling right into one of the newer slave trader's ships and well fuck. He tried to fight them off but one of them has a collar with sea stone that the big boss person gives to every ship, even the smaller ones. So now luffy's fucked.

Since he's got a devil fruit, he's taken to the big boss child slave distributor asshole (put that on a business card) and then eventually gets taken to judge, because of course that dickhead would buy superpowered children. Judge gets him purely because rubber boy can take a hell of a walloping and also is stronger than the average four year old.

The vinsmoke brats and Sanji end up being pitted against Luffy and luffy does not win, but he doesnt die either so that's a plus. Sanji hates beating up a four year old, his brothers seem to love being able to punch something as much as they want without them being taken away or dying.

Luffy ends up learning how to fight by force, and eventually he's dubbed Sanji's fighting partner since they're both the weakest, which sucks because if sanji loses he gets locked up and if luffy loses then judge gives the other three brothers sharp objects and free time with luffy

Eventually luffy befriends sanji because of course he does, and loving food as much as he does he becomes the taste tester for sanji's cooking endeavors, and sometimes luffy manages to limp away to talk to sanji when he's in his cell.

When they escape, they escape together, and sanji becomes a bus boy and luffy just carries shit because he cant really do anything else but he could deadlift a ship at 10 so hey

When the attack happens, sanji's trying to save luffy, but zeff has to save him. Sanji sits on that rock almost certain that luffy's dead.

Luffy didn't die tho, because no, and he got saved, idk how, this is a writing prompt u figure it out, and they end up growing up apart for a bit after that. Luffy doesn't find his island again, but he does a bit of bounty hunting to get by and ends up making a name for himself because apparently his 'training' with the vinsmokes was a little more brutal than he thought.

Sanji works hard, he feels he owes a debt to both zeff and luffy, both of which helped him in some of his worse moments, and ends up a bit more edgy than in canon because he thinks his only friend is dead (push him to the edge🎶)

But then luffy gets blamed for something that was only really half his fault and half the random bandit he was fighting's fault, and he ends up with a bounty. It isn't a big one, just about 10000 berri, he kinda destroyed a bit more marine property than is recommended. But then sanji sees the bounty in the paper and he doesnt know if he should be glad his friend is alive or angry that luffy let him think he was dead.

But then luffy comes to the baratie when hes about 15-16, and then he sees sanji again and now he's super fuckin happy because how would luffy know sanji was alive?? They both came to the conclusion of mutual misunderstanding and lack of information after a bit of angst, because its sanji and luffy. But they get over it because they were both on the bottom end of the vinsmoke hellhole and does it really matter when they're reunited?

Zeff let's luffy steal sanji because it's been over a decade but luffy still wants to be the motherfuckin king, okay? And sanji's gonna be the cook for the pirate king and find the all blue because

Sanji becomes luffy's first mate and then start a sailing. Luffy attracts friends like a magnet, they get usopp next, and luffy kills kuro because luffy isn't as not-killerish as he is in canon because tragic backstory and if you leave a kid alone to be a bounty hunter long enough with only their own brain to make the morals, what do you expect will happen? Usopp joins because 'UwU piwate' is his opinion on the matter

They get nami, and sanji's a bit more chill than in canon because growing up with a guy that was also nice along with his sister and mother had a bit of an impact. He's still a bit if a french goth and treats nami better than other people but he isn't being a douche about a lady fighting or making faces quite as stupid.

Zoro joins but Does Not like sanji, which is mutual but luffy likes him so sanji must deal. They make their way toward the grand line, going back to the baratie, or what's left of it.

Sanji gets another thick layer of angst learning that while he was gone, don krieg destroyed the ship trying to steal it, and then they go to find don krieg, postponing grand line for a hot second because luffy wont leave until he gets to personally kick the ass of whoever made his cook so extra angsty, and sanji seconds that.

They find don krieg in Cocoyashi island, after crashing there with his broke ass ship. They fight him, the ruckus brings out arlong before Nami can attempt to lie to save them.

Sanji gets off one angst and gets it replaced with another when he can barely do shit because he was cooking all this time and is no longer as strong as luffy, who was only really working on fighting. Luffy almost dies because he has to fight both those shitheads back to back, but he wins.

Sanji starts getting more aggressive with zoro, and zoro only stays because he saw the fight and respects his captain, but that's a bit of a loose thing, ready to snap with a wrong move. Or maybe zoro leaves because he needed that fight with mihawk to realise this was serious and he was a pirate now, to each their own.

They stay in the east blue a little longer because luffy nearly died and they dont have a doctor, but he's fine. Sanji gets more guilt tho because that's how he is, and starts treating luffy nicer, which leads to luffy instigating a fight between the two of them because luffy wont swallow that shit. It helps things because violence is sometimes the answer

They head to the grand line, up reverse mountain, meet the whale, the whole shebang. Sanji might catch feels by this point because honestly who wouldn't?

Nami gets sick, and luffy doesn't know how to deal with that because back when he was being carted around with a sea stone collar and 30 other starving children, they just shot the ones that got sick. Ptsd time and guess who gets to help because zoro isn't first mate/here? Sanji! Which definitely puts things into perspective because for as long as he'd known him, luffy's tried his hardest to make sanji smile, and keep him company, even though after being bought luffy's only purpose was to be a stepping stone in sanji's development. So sanji finally being smacked across the face with the brunt of bottled up traumatized child luffy, he needs a fuckin smoke.

They find drum island and then same shit as canon, except it hits a bit harder with luffy carrying a dying nami and a heavily injured sanji up sheer rock because that's the only person that luffy had when shit got rough that he's holding between his teeth.

When sanji wakes up he probably notices how injured luffy is and can estimate the ringer he's been through because Sanji had to personally find out how luffy's healing factor worked because he was a good fraction of the reason luffy needed to heal so much.

They acquire a chopper :3

Exquisite Control

Help, I thought too hard about what it would be like if Ace had a touch of Carrie in him. If the fire he used was a bit more... tied with his temper. And he refined that temper. I just really like people with nasty tempers but a fine control over it until someone fucks around and finds out.

Ace was a hellion growing up. Snarling and biting at everyone and anyone that came close to him. A ball of self-hatred and desperation to leave a mark on the world, even if it was in the shape of his teeth in every hand that reached out to him. Gramps taught Ace determination. The kind that left blood on his teeth and wanting more. Sabo taught him what it meant to be patient. To be clever with his teeth, where to bite and when to nip. Luffy… taught him that there are people out there that will love him despite the violence in his soul. Luffy inspired him to use that as a weapon in defense, rather than just lashing out because he could.

But still Ace had his damnable temper. Not even Sabo’s passing couldn’t cool the fire in his blood. Not Dadan and her awkward affection, nor Makino and her gentle acceptance. It beat in his chest like a war drum. A need to prove himself more than the sins of his father. It curled in his heart, intertwined with his hatred for what he saw in the mirror. He lacked any control to tame it, so it spilled over, often hurting those around him in bursts.

What finally taught him control was, ironically, his devil fruit. And Deuce. Deuce really helped Ace in those first few weeks. Endlessly patient, but not willing to take his shit… Sabo would have gotten along well with Ace’s first mate. Really bonded over wrangling his feral mountain child heart and temper.

Fire came easily to Ace. It had been in his very bones from the start and never stopped growing. It was so strong, in fact, that Ace found it almost impossible to so much as walk past a candle without it flaring up. Deuce taught him what it meant to breathe. To settle in his chest and understand what it meant to be still. To rest on his haunches rather than stalk around, waiting for a perceived insult to set him off. He still hated himself. His reflection. Every part of his face that he deemed too much like that man.

Not even his ever-growing crew could help that.

But when he patrolled his ship late one night with nary a flicker of candlelight, he felt like he was one step closer to casting aside his darkness. The shadow of a man long dead that hovered over his shoulder along with the entire world. That night, the reflection of his eyes looked like a banked campfire rather than the cold steel he thought suited the devilish man who created him.

Challenging Whitebeard was the best and worst decision he ever made.

He never used his devil fruit outside of that first instance, too aware that his fraying temper spelled disaster for the entire ship. His hard-earned control strained under the weight of mocking laughter with every failed attempt. He got better, of course. He could hardly grow up on Dawn Island, let alone thrive in it’s hostile environments, if he wasn’t adaptable. But still… that fire burned brighter—hotter—with every passing comment.

He’d never held his temper at bay quite like this before.

Whether he intended to or not, Whitebeard taught him true restraint. To hold back just enough, even if enough wasn’t good enough for what he needed to do. To understand where the line was and just how close he was comfortable being to it. He wanted to kill Whitebeard, but the man’s crew? Not his target. They did not deserve his wrath. Even if they tested his patience with their mocking laughter again and again.

And when he finally caved and asked that damn question, Oyaji… gave him hope. It settled in his chest. If someone who knew that man could look past his legacy and accept Ace as he was, then… maybe that long shadow wasn’t quite his burden to bear after all. Maybe Luffy and Sabo were right to accept him so easily. He still had bad days, of course, but with time… he could pick out parts of his features he liked. That he could look fondly at because they reminded him of his family.

Thatch teased him for his freckles, how they splattered over his nose and cheekbones. Perpetually casting his features in a soft, childish light.

Oyaji liked his eyes, how they lit up with a certain fire separate from his devil fruit. How alive he looked when he was willing to put everything he was on the line.

Marco admired the loose curls of his hair, how the twisting locks caught the light of both their fruits on an ebony canvas. How soft it was despite Ace’s lack of care. He would often ruffle Ace’s hair when he was being particularly difficult.

A great many of his new family members liked how his blush burned bright over his face to the tips of his ears. Flickers of fire casting embers into the air when Ace was especially worked up. Which was often.

And then, one day, Ace taught them something too.

What it meant to have absolute control even if it appears like it was the complete opposite.

A strong rival crew sailed boldly through Oyaji’s territory, destroying homes and ransacking people under their protection. Insulting everything under the sun and then some.

At first, Ace did quite well. Insults didn’t quite roll off his back, but they were noted and addressed accordingly. His moniker getting a real workout as he tore through the rival crew with a determined stride. It was his first real fight with Oyaji’s mark, after all. So what if he showed off a little?

Then they crossed a line.

“So you’re the whelp of that bitch, Portgas Rouge, huh? Just as worthless, to boot!”

There was a shift in his stance. Something in his chest stirred hot, seeping into his bones. Lanterns in the evening light swayed before standing still. His eyes fixed ahead as his lips were pulled into a grim smile.

Sensing something, Thatch was quick to try and defuse the situation.

“Hey! That’s a lady you’re talking about, how about you shut your mouth?” Ace lifted his hand and glanced back.

“It’s alright. They can apologize in person.” Ace raised his other hand. Candlelight flickered and swayed, twinkling in the air around him as the lanterns heated up. Glass began to crack.

“Ace! Don’t lose your temper like this!” Marco called out.

“Lose my temper, Marco?” Ace called out, as fire gathered at his feet like fireflies. The air itself began to buckle and sway under the heat, wood softly groaning. Easing his shoulders back, Ace cheerfully beamed.

Fire plumes swept around the deck like a whip, hot air barely grazing his family and the flammable wood of Moby Dick. The offending crew began to scream as shapes condensed in the flames. All manner of creatures twisting and spiraling around.

Ace was pleased to note that the rude man who insulted his mother by name had a lot less to say when his throat was charred.

One by one, the crew was ignited in quick fashion. Ace wasn’t cruel, not anymore. Not like he used to be. But he was calculating with his burning anger. Something Sabo had set the foundation of long ago. Ace rather thought Sabo would approve of how there was scarcely ash left. Not even the deck was seared by the burning heat.

Ace was thorough, to put it lightly.

When the last one was gone, Ace sighed. Turning on his heel, he brushed off some grime from his shoulder and smiled at Marco.

“I’ll have you know I have exquisite control.”

Later, Marco would confide in Ace that the look in his eyes at that moment was magnetic. A promise uncompromising. That he couldn’t look away. It wasn’t like Roger, where his presence felt like it filled the room. It was like seeing an absolute certainty cast in silver and fire. As sure as the sun and searing to the bone.

Teach would not get to tell Ace that in those final moments, Ace looked like hell on earth. Damnation made flesh and punishment assured. That his warm fire burned like ice.

There wouldn’t be anything left of him either.

the origins of Luffy’s smile

a/n: happy birthday king♡

“Ha! Brace face, brace face!” A swarm of middle school kids single out a tiny boy, not above the age of 12, and backing him up to a corner of the cafeteria. It was a Monday my dudes, and you know what that means— it was the start of another dreadful morning for Monkey D. Luffy... or as what the other kids say, Monkey D. Brace Face. 

Growing up, Luffy has had some whack ass teeth and Dadan being the good guardian that she is, forced him to get these metal restrictions on his teeth for a nicer smile.

“Shut up!” A bit of drool peeks out as his words slur together, “leave me alone or else I’ll kick your ass!” The kids laugh even more, nobody daring to help the poor Luffy out of his predicament. 

“Horse face!”

“Beaver mouth!”

“Nerd! What a loser!”

“Metal mouth! Train tracks!”

Out of frustration, Luffy growled as his legs lunged towards them like a ravish beast. Just in time, Principal Garp’s reflexes caught him mid air, effectively preventing Luffy from biting the heads off of the little twerps.

“Boys! Office! Now.” 

After a few phone calls to parents, the endless teasing faded into the distance as Luffy stayed behind in the office.

“Boy, quit getting into trouble will ya? Can’t keep covering your ass forever y’know.” Garp swung his legs onto the desk, leaning against his chair to comfortably enjoy his donut. 

“I know. I know,” he repeated, stubbornly refusing to look at his grandpa, “they started it! They call me brace face and train tracks. They’re annoying so I thought to kick them in the head to shut them right up.”

“You’re liking I’m not telling dear old Dadan.” Shivers run down Luffy’s spine. Nobody likes it when Dadan is mad, especially Luffy. Last time he made her mad, he was homeless for a week. 

“Aight, thanks old man! Well that settles it—“ he turns on his heel, “see ya around!”

“Wait! Keep your mouth shut next time.” Garp exhales a big breath, “and bring me my donut.”

He doesn’t like to smile. There was no reason to smile because every time he did, he always ran into trouble. 

He hates smiling. He hates his stupid teeth. Hates how people are so fucking mean because he’s different. It never really bothered him until now; puberty really be no joke, even if he was a little late to the party.

In amidst his sad train of thoughts, he ran into this girl in the middle of an empty hall, who uhm, had a very interesting fashion choice—tank top over a shirt with some colored leggings, a stack of bangles decorating her wrists all the way up to her forearm and whew don’t let me get started on those leg warmers. 

“Oh, hey! Never seen you around before,” he smiled, the metal protruding from his mouth, “shishishi, you’re weird!” He took a closer look at you, taking you aback from his honesty.

“O-oi! These are cool!” Proudly displaying the matching rings on your hand, Luffy’s smile became impossibly bigger. “And I’m not weird, fish eyes. I just happen to be way ahead of my time.”

“I like you. I’m Luffy!”

You introduced yourself and returned the smile, only to retract it back when he called you the wrong name. This was the start of the strangest friendship, who would’ve thought Thomas the train tracks and ugly Betty McGee would become friends?

“Ha??? What’s this? Ugly Betty and the Ugly Fuckling got together!” The bully boys were back, disheartening Luffy’s new profound confidence. “gRR SHUT UP,” his big mouth says without processing, “pick on someone your own size jackass!”

“Can’t do that since there’s nobody above me, moron.” The boy grabbed the milk from Luffy’s tray and squeezed it, the warm milk splashing all over his face. “Take that, pathetic loser. That’s what you get for getting us in trouble the other day! I’ll rip that shit from your teeth if you test me again, nerd!”

Before the bitchass can do anything more, you stood up for Luffy. “Back off buddy. Luffy was literally breathing and you came over. Stop picking on someone defenseless.” 

He scoffed and commended your retort mockingly. To show his unwavering resolve, he dunked the nearest tray all over your Hannah Montana jacket. “Fucking sucker.”

The kids stopped eating and paid attention to the scene that was about to go down. 

“Leave Y/n out of this.”

“Try and stop me Thomas.”

That was the last straw. A punch was thrown across his face, knocking him down, his cockiness replaced with fear. “You can insult me all you want, you jerk,” he spat out, “but don’t you ever DARE hurt my friend. Because next time, I’ll give you more than a black eye. I’ll beat your ass.” 

Everyone watched in shock. Luffy was on top of the table, fists balled and nostrils flaring. The bully looked so helpless.

“Damn it LUFFYY,” Garp’s voice boomed throughout the cafeteria, causing Luffy to scramble off the desk and run away, laughing, while pulling you along with him.

And from there, middle school was great. It was almost like a fairytale adventure! The amount of pranks pulled and not giving a single fuck of what people thought was what really made it memorable. The laughter and Luffy’s toothy smiles were a bonus. Alas, it was the end of an era when promotion happened and you had to leave, but at that time, Luffy wasn’t alone anymore; he now had the grumpy little moss head named Zoro by his side.

“Are you sure you have to go?”

“I’m sure I’m not tryna be left behind!”

His hands crossed behind his head as he kicked the nearest pebbles on the floor. “How sure are you?”

“Pretty sure I’m leaving with my fam, bro.” You slammed the last of your tunics into your stocky suitcase. “But all the memories we shared... they were all gucci my man. It was the pea to my pods, the fucking yin to meh yang, the apple to my eye,” he had no clue what the hell you were saying and was even more confused when you placed your hand on his shoulder. Your first was balled up into a ball and over dramatic tears spilled down your cheeks.  “I will forever miss you, home dawg. But on some real shit, this be an end to an era.”

“Y/n, you’re leaving, not dying,” he pouts, “speak English not shaker speaker.”

“Shakespeare,” you corrected. “Don’t forget about me you hoebag.” You ruffled his little tangled locks as Luffy nods and holds his two thumbs up in affirmation. You squeeze him in that annoying hug he hates so much. And it dawned upon you: you need a picture. This one is hitting the scrapbooks you’ve been making.

You shuffled around for your Sony camera and flipped it to take a selfie. Luffy hesitates for a moment. 

“Cmon man! Just one for my scrapbooks please.”

You pull him closer to your frame and smile the dorkiest smile you can muster, he does the same. This was for the scrapbooks you treasured after all. You reviewed it with him. It looked perfect, the red-lined braces being the most prominent thing in the photo along with your Nirvana tee and animal-shaped rubber bands. 

“You should smile more bro! You look so good here!”

And maybe for the first time, he does smile at the compliment, ignoring the string of metal wires along his teeth. He was gonna miss you.

Before you departed, he gave you one last fist bump. “See you around, Y/n!” was the last thing you heard before the taxi drove off.

And he doesn’t see you for a long time. And his braces get removed, making high school a bit easier than the years prior. And yes, maybe he doesn’t see you until college, but one thing is for sure, he never stopped smiling.
