growing up together the two of you were basically inseparable. he always found himself by your side, he couldn’t help himself there was something about you. maybe it was the way you never backed down when he argued with you, or the way you cared for luffy and got along with sabo, or definitely how you called him stupid for letting his name define him.

sabo elbowed ace with a small smile on his face “you’re staring at them. again. everyone knows you like them you know you’re so obvious.”

ace stammered over his words, his face quickly turned red as the blush creeped up his neck “im not! i was just lookin out for luffy. you know luffy plays rough and i didn’t want him to injure y/n. yeah that’s it.”

sabo’s grin gets wider and becomes smug “oh so you’re worried about y/n?”

“shut up!” ace yelled feeling embarrassed and with his pipe raised as if he was going to swing.

it’s been years since that conversation. the quartet, unfortunately, became a trio. although the conversation ace had with sabo was years ago he remembered it as if it was yesterday. he’s been crushing on you since you were kids he’s not the shy type but for some reason, you have that effect on him. anytime he tried he always chickened out.

but today was the day he was leaving to sail the world so it was now or never.

“are you sure you don’t wanna join my crew ace? you can be first mate!” luffy smiled widely at his brother. he asked the same question hundreds of times and got the same answer.

ace laughed and smiled “please we both know that i’m the captain and you’re first mate luffy. i’ll see you later yeah? try not to cause too much trouble while i’m gone luffy.”

ace’s gaze landed on you, his eyes visibly softening when he looks into yours “how do you feel about an adventure on the seas y/n?” he extends his hand to you “it’d drive me crazy to be apart from you.“

“what? come on ace you can’t steal my first mate!” luffy protested with his arms crossed.

you raised a brow and smiled at luffy “first mate? i thought ace was your first mate luffy?”

“he’s a captain now so it wouldn’t work get with the program y/n!”

you laughed and gently nudged luffy with your shoulder “im gonna miss you luffy.” ace’s eyes lit up and he smiled like a love-sick fool “y/n..”

you put your hand in his. he pulled you into him, his free arm snaking around your waist “welcome aboard first mate.”

luffy stuck his tongue out at the two of you “traitors!” he then laughed with his usual infectious grin on his face.

“oh great he took the only one with sense.” dadan grumbled and rubbed her temples it was going to be a long few years with no one to keep luffy in check.

as you sailed off with ace you watched as the island became smaller and smaller, he cupped your face in his hands. his touch was gentle yet rough “there’s something about you. you drive me insane always have and you always will.” he leaned closer your lips mere inches apart. he wanted you to close the gap he wanted to see if you wanted him as much as he wanted you.

you leaned in and closed the gap, your lips gently molding with his. one of his hands moved down to your hip to pull you closer when you unfortunately had to pull apart for air he bruised his lips against yours and pressed a kiss to your lips.

“i’ve always wanted to kiss you…we’re gonna burn the house down baby just watch.”

You think Crocodile's gonna blow his stack when he finds out how shitty Luffy's upbringing was? His baby boy repeatedly got tossed into the jungle to fend for himself against wild animals, as well as off cliffs and left to float into the fucking air on balloons all courtesy of Garp. He got left alone for long periods of time possibly as early as infancy, also cuz of Garp. And oh yeah, he was tortured by pirates, almost burned to death in a giant garbage fire, and went through the trauma of losing a brother.

Like, no matter how stern or distant of a parent Crocodile may be, I don't think he would be content to stand by and let any of that happen to baby Luffy. Also also, Crocodile witnessed firsthand Garp impeding Luffy's attempts to rescue Ace. The Cross Guild wants Garp for his bounty. Crocodile wants Garp for REVENGE.

With Garp I feel like it could go either way because like, let's be real for a second

This is 100% played for laughs.

Like if we're being serious then yes, in the Very Real World this is absolutely child neglect and abuse, Garp's parenting would NEVER fly (🥁) in our Very Real World. But just like Nami can physically abuse Luffy and co for laughts and get away with it, Garp's "training" is very much the same tonally, a Cartoon Slapstick Gag (made even more obvious when Toei animated Baby Luffy flying off into the sky going "UGYAAAAA" (that clip lives in my head rent free it's so funny??)) and a reflection of how this ridiculous old man (who might've been through even more ridiculous training in his childhood) views how a small child can be trained.

And so like. I could imagine Crocodile being like "who the fuck does that to a small child, are you insane" at Garp if he found out how Garp had been raising Luffy, but I think whatever reaction Crocodile might have would be played just as much for laughs as Garp's original comments were

Like IDK if Crocodile and Garp did have a relationship I think it would end up being similar to how Zoro and Sanji interact. Like Crocodile would to some degree be indebted to Garp because Garp did look after his son when he couldn't, and Garp wouldn't have a precious grandson (whom Garp sincerely does love, deeply) without Crocodile, so like. I think there could be like this mutual respect and gratitude for the other. But also it'd be kind of a begrudging gratitude and they would also hate each others guts and what they stand for and probably bicker. Lots. But in a funny way. (Like Zoro and Sanji)

Also I feel like even if Crocodile personally hated Garp's guts I don't think Crocodile would ever try anything to harm Garp. Like he saw how Luffy absolutely shattered after losing Ace, so even if Luffy and Garp's relationship wasn't the strongest, if Luffy loves his grandpappy then I don't think Crocodile would want to take his son's only grandfather, his family, away. Crocodile isn't in any kind of position to "take revenge" on the man who did look after his son for him (even if his methods were questionable at times) (Same for Dadan and the bandits too arguably)

The convenient thing of me letting this ask sit in my ask box for 20 days before actually responding is that I managed to post this thing the other day, and I want to continue an observation from that post; While I do agree Crocodile would probably be horrified to find out about all shit Luffy went through as a child... In the end, what's happened has happened, and I think Crocodile might believe that if he had wanted to ensure his son wouldn't have to go through things like that, then he should've raised the child himself. That Luffy's childhood not being all sunshine and rainbows is kind of his fault.

They will bring flowers, but it will make you sick, some jewelry. Some story they had give you snacks, clean up their mess.

Well, let's say he got a scratch on his arm from an angry cat. You got the bandage. You carefully wrappings his arm. He started crying.

"And that will do it! All done!" You said.

Sabo hugged you. You asked him to be careful himself.

Ace.

He hurt his head from fell and hit a rock. And his head starts to bleed. You wrapped his head with a bandage, but Ace says he was okay, but he not.

"I said I was fine! OW!" He yelled. "Uh huh, you should be more careful"

After you finish, Ace has laid in bed.

He bleed his leg from fall cause he was climbing a tree.

Okay okay hear me out foster au. Luffy, Ace and Sabo were raised by their foster mom Dadan and foster dad Whitebeard (along with Whitebeard's many grown adopted kids who visit from time to time and Dadan and Whitebeard aren't a romantic couple they are friends who decided to foster together because why not) after Luffy's dad dipped after his birth and Crocodile was deemed unfit to raise him (Crocodile is a recovering alcoholic) not long after his birth, Garp was granted visitation rights. Ace's mom died after giving birth to him from undiagnosed Pre-eclampsia and his dad was murdered before he was born. Sabo was taken from his parents after they were found to have been abusing him. Luffy meets Zoro whos being fostered by Mihawk (Perona is adopted at this point and Mihawk is fighting to adopt Zoro), then he meets Nami who after her adopted mom's death in a car crash is being raised by her adopted dad and Bell-mère's husband) Arlong along with her sister Nojiko (Arlong is extremely controlling and overprotective of the duo because he blames himself for Bell-mère's death because he had an argument with her before the car crash, he does loves the duo but he is super paranoia and worries alot so he has his brothers (his own adopted brothers) watch the girls when hes not around. After that he meets Usopp who was living by himself after his mom's death but gets put into foster care and is being raised by Zeff who agreed to take him in because he felt bad for Usopp and he genuinely cares about him. Zeff introduces the group to his other foster son Sanji (who he has been fighting a long and hard battle to adopt him but Sanji's bio family won't let him and are demanding Sanji back, Zeff threatened to do unspeakable things to him if they (everyone expect for Sanji's sister Reiju) even look at Sanji). Soon they have to take Nami to the hospital because while they were playing with Luffy's uncle Buggy (who is his Uncle Shanks' ex boyfriend but still calls himself Luffy's uncle) and Uncle Buggy's best friend Mr. 3 (everyone calls him that because its his nickname) and some other kids (who include Nami's girlfriend Vivi, Valentine and Valentine's best friend Gem) and Vivi's pet dog Karoo an Irish wolfhound, Luffy got overexcited and accidently scared Karoo who was near Nami and Karoo knocked over Nami who fall and hit her head on a rock. Arlong stopped the game and took Nami and the rest of the group (which includes Vivi and Karoo he approves of Vivi's and Nami's relationship) to the hospital and they meet Dr. Kureha and her adopted son Chopper whos a genius. Nami is fine and only has a bruise and a small cut on her head. Dr. Kureha encourages Chopper to play with the group and be friend with them. He does after much hesitation and they all become good friends. Soon they meet Luffy's mom now dad Crocodile who has recovered from his alcohol addiction and granted visitation rights, Crocodile introduces them to his adopted sister Robin whos Luffy's Aunt and Robin is a famous historical fantasy writer, all of the kids take to Robin immediately and call her Aunty Robin, Luffy refers to Crocodile as his dad who got mpreg (hes confused but hes got the spirit). Then Robin lets them meet her fiancé Franky whos a mechanic(part time) and an genius inventor who they all call Uncle Franky and love him. They were initially off to a bad start because it turned out that he was the one who reported Usopp for living alone but Usopp forgave him because it let him find his place in the world. They are then introduced to Brook who works at local aquamarine and is a scare actor during Halloween and a part time musician , he's Garp's older brother and Luffy's great uncle so they call him Gruncle Brook. Brook has a pet tortoise that he named Laboon and was his best friend's tortoise at first but then his friend died after a long and hard battle with cancer.

They all enjoy spending their days playing together

Whitebeard has one of those big and loud homes, where everyone is fighting over which room is occupied and where someone should or shouldn't be. I see them like a "Cheaper By The Dozen" type of thing. Some of them moved out already but they always find a reason to hang around. At first all the kids were unhappy about the arrangement, but then they saw how much love there was to go around.

Whitebeard is the fun dad and Dadan is the strict, overworked and underpaid mom. Maybe they're married for tax reasons and because they're too old to date so they made a "if we're both not married by 40" pact that turned into a "single by 50+" pact. As you said they're not romantically involved, but they share their love for their kids and that's what makes them happy.

At one point Ace is arrested for assault. He tracked down and beat up his uncle - Blackbeard because he stole a family heirloom that cost a hefty amount and sold it off. He was seen as a traitor because it had been in the family for generations and all he cared for was the money.

(He may go to jail for a month and serve public service but he doesn't die in this au because I need their happiness at least sometimes!)

Why do I feel like Garp would take the boys out to the craziest camping trips. Like they'll go one day and two days later Luffy, Ace and Sabo will come back with like, alligator skin, a necklace from shark teeth and some weird-looking rock that turned out to be a meteorite. And when you ask them what happened they'll go "well at first we thought it was weird that we didn't have anything, cuz in the movies they get tents and food and stuff, but grandpa told us real men survive with nothing. We went hunting which was cool though we got a bit worried for a little when that bear attacked grandpa, but it's fine now. Did you know bears are just like big dogs!?" From then on Dadan never let them go camping without her, she kept Garp in check and packed all the food supplies etc.

I feel like Mihawk would be one of those dads that are like "I never knew why people were so obsessed with their stupid kids..." pulls out Perona dressed like a pretty princess and zoro looking like a feral child "until I got a stupid kid myself. I've had these two for not too long but if anything happens to them I will kill everyone in this room and then myself."

I'd like to believe that after the accident with Nami, Arling starts being at least a bit of a better dad.

He never wanted to choose parenthood. Parenthood chose him. And he's a great dad, he plays pretend royal tea parties with Perona and teaches Zoro manners. By the time the child services come to see if he's a fit parent to adopt Zoro they find how much politer and well mannered he is.

Speaking of foster parents, Zeff was fighting so hard for Sanji he spent countless nights trying to help his lawyer, work overtime to have the money to pay him and overall worrying about the kid. Their very first activity after winning the case was a big meal and a movie to which Zeff fell asleep to during the first scene. (The movie was Ratatouille and Sanji loved it. After that he made Zeff buy him a pet rat, who he adored and cooked for little tiny gourmet meals.)

I love that Buggy and his friends still play with the kids. He's the funniest and loudest uncle Luffy could ask for. When Luffy asked why Buggy and Shanks broke up, Buggy said that "Shanks refused to live up to his potential and I couldn't let him do that to himself" to which Luffy said was very reasonable and would take Buggy's side whenever the subject arose. (It was one of the only things that Luffy sided with Buggy about.)

Ohhh yes, Robin is a very famous writer but she writes under an alias to be harder to recognize. Her books are some of the most historically accurate works of fiction that has been writing so most fans speculate that she's a history teacher or professor of sorts. Some of her exes and old friends used to tell her that writing is a waste of time and making it as a writer is near impossible. Her (now) fiance Franky, on the other hand was so excited to hear all about her book ideas. When she (reluctantly) told him she'd want to write his eyes lit up. He didn't even know if she was a published author yet, but he would call her "an artist" and "a genius at work" whenever he'd see her writing on her laptop.

Crocodile was probably so nervous to see Luffy after all this time, worried he wouldn't recognize him and not sure if he'd be accepted by his own kid. But then Luffy hugged him anyway and when Croc explained everything to him Luffy just said "Oh, cool! Like a transformer, my dad's so awesome!"(and then did a little robot movement) which really set Crocodile at ease and even warmed his heart a bit...

When the kids found out it was Franky who reported them, they tried to fight him but then they reasoned with the facts (some slower than others) and it ended up with Usopp running away in tears. Franky chased him down to find him at his mother's grave. They just sat in silence there. Eventually Usopp stood up and told Franky that he forgave him. (Or at least that's how I imagine it ig)

Brook strikes me as the guy who would start playing drinking songs at bars and the next day go do a charity event at some ungodly hour. He absolutely loves kids and thinks they're a bundle of joy (plus they're the best audience, since they're the most honest in their love or hate for music). At first when they start calling him Gruncle Brook he got offended because "I'm not that old, kids, come on!" but he slowly started taking as a fond nickname rather than a reminder of his age.

Garp was going to a place that had a lot of chattering going on. But, he wasn't the only one going there.

Inside, a group of people was chattering about random subjects such as money, shops, and other things. While there were three other kids talking about being pirates. They were known as Luffy, Ace, and Sabo.

"When I go to sea, the first thing I'm going to do is add the greatest cook in the world to my crew!" Sabo said with a smile.

Ace notices and turns to him.

"I'm gonna become a pirate first, so that'll be impossible."

"That's not fair! I'm going to become a pirate before either of you!" Luffy exclaims with a huge smile on his face.

The people spit out the drinks that they were drinking with their eyes about to come out of their eye sockets. Luffy and Ace looked confused before feeling something behind them.

"You're still saying crap like that?!" a rusty voice asks.

That's when they spit out their own drinks.

"Can't you both understand that you must become Navy soldiers?!" he exclaims at them.

He hits both of their heads by the top.

"Dadan!"

"Yes, Garp san..."

She was cut off by him hitting her on the head.

"Why should I get hit, too?" she asks.

"You're not educating the brats well!" he replies, lifting his fist.

"He's Garp? He's Ace and Luffy's grandfather?" Sabo questions.

Garp slowly turns to Sabo.

"Squirt, you mentioned about going out to sea, too," he said, staring at him with a dangerous gaze.

"He's not a squirt, he's Sabo! We exchanged a cup of sake and pledged to become pirates!" Luffy defended.

"He has such a big mouth..." Ace said.

"Oh, that means now there are 3 fools who want me to give them a real workout!" Garp said while cracking his knuckles.

Now the three boys look nervous. But, no punch happened. Garp let out a heavy sigh.

"Before I beat these little brats, I have someone you should all meet."

Now everyone looked concerned.

Garp searched for something from the back and a bundle was in his arms. Everyone gathered to see what was in that thing.

It was a small baby inside.

"Wow, she's adorable!" Makino exclaims as she clasped her hands together.

"This is Y/N. I found her on a ship that was on fire. Luckily, the Marines and I found her on time. What could have happened if we didn't find her on time..."

Ace, being a little curious, went up to Garp and stared down at the little baby inside. Including Luffy and Sabo.

Luffy looked down and placed his finger on her hand, and he felt a much tiny hand grasp it which made him jolt. The baby slightly opened her eyes and stared up at him.

"She's going to be your new sister now. Even you, kid."

Sabo looks up at Garp and back to the baby.

Y/N finally looked up at the three young boys and giggled in a hearty tone.

Now, Luffy and Sabo felt something inside that was released from their souls.

Warmth.

"Now anyways, Dadan, can you hold her for a bit?" Garp asks while handing the bundle into the woman's arms.

"E-Eh?! Why me?!" she exclaims.

"It'll be quick, or if you want to join these brats..." he said in a dangerous tone.

Daden hesitantly took the baby in her arms and tried to rock her when she started crying.

For some reason, when she started crying, they had the urge to kill.

Garp cracked his knuckles.

"Now, as for you brats..."

Now, their gazes were focused on the angry, tall old man.

The next thing they knew, there was a lot of screaming and beating.

After the many beatings they received, the young boys finally decided to leave the den.

When everyone fell asleep, they got ready to leave.

"Ace, are you sure we should do this?" Sabo asked in a quiet tone.

"If nothing is done, the old man will kill us tomorrow..." Ace replies.

"I don't want to die!" Luffy exclaims.

"Shut up! You'll wake them up!" Ace whispered-yelled.

"Wait, what about Y/N?" Sabo asked.

Ace turned to the bundle on the floor that has the sleeping baby.

"We can't really leave her here. I don't think it's a good environment," Sabo told him.

"It's fine! I was raised here ever since I came into the world. So, I'm sure she'll be fine," Ace told him.

"We should bring her with us," Luffy said.

"What did I just say Luffy?!" Ace asks in an angry tone.

"But, think about it, Ace. What if your grandpa treats her the same way as he did to you? What if he forces her to join the Marines? Come on, have a heart for once," Sabo asks him.

Ace thought about it for a moment. Sure, he doesn't really likes younger kids and babies, but Sabo was right. He can't let Garp hurt the baby. It makes him want to kill him.

He lets out a sigh.

"Alright. Let's take her with us. I'm doing this so she wouldn't get hurt."

Luffy lets out a silent cheer as Sabo let out a sigh of relief. They were both worried about what would happen if they didn't bring her.

Ace quietly walks towards the bundle and picks it up. He looks at Y/N's chubby face as she opens her eyes and turns to face him. She lets out an adorable giggle.

Now, he felt the warmth inside just like Luffy and Sabo.

"Psst, Ace! Hurry up before they wake up!"

He turns and nods. He quickly runs to them and all three of them left to their own world.

Now, there was another member in their bond, and they would not let this one go.

“Oh, Ace, are you there? Are you coming home?”

Once, when he and Ace were younger, they got lost in the woods. This hadn’t been longer than a month after Ace had arrived, when he was still learning the rules of the house and the lay of the land. He hadn’t listened to Luffy, had led them in a circle until that circle veered off the path. They were helpless, lost in the dark of the forest as the sun began to sink below the horizon. Lost, helpless, clinging to one another while Ace tried to be brave and strong but he was shaking just as much as Luffy was, until Dadan found them an hour after sundown.

Turns out, they were only twenty five feet from the opening of the forest. They weren’t that helpless.

Helpless.

It’s a strange feeling to experience, helplessness. Normally, you are the one who is taking care of everything, who is coming to the aid of everyone. But suddenly, and without warning, you are the one who is helpless.

The ground was spongy beneath Luffy’s feet. It’s like moss; he’d mentioned that when they first made port at this Archipelago. How had things gone from bad to worse in hours? It didn’t make sense. None of this made sense. Why were there so many Kumas? How was that possible? It wasn’t in his Devil Fruit, he wasn’t supposed to be able to make multiples of himself. Had someone cloned him?

Zoro.

Zoro. He croaked out some semblance of his name, as if calling out would do any good, would bring him back from whatever it was that Kuma had done to him. Was he dead? Did Kuma kill his best friend, his other half, his partner, his first mate? The concept stole the breath from his lungs, bringing forth a rage he didn’t think was possible. But his body was weak; injured, he could feel his ribs creaking with each breath he drew in. “HEY! WHAT DID HE DO TO ZORO?” Luffy yelled at the scar-faced kid who kept calling the Admiral his Uncle.

( Uncle? What a weird family, but who is he to judge? He just wants to get this done with, so he can get the ship coated, and get to Ace. Where is Ace? He needs to find Ace. He needs to find his big brother because his big brother needs him. Why was his Vivre Card so damaged? Was he injured? Was he alone? Was he helpless, too, in this moment? He needs to find Ace. He promised Dadan that they’d return together one day. He can’t break that promise to their mother. )

“They say anyone Kuma touches with his paws goes flying for three days and nights. But no one knows if that’s true. Only Kuma himself…” the rest of what was said simply went in one ear, out the other, as Luffy’s attention turned towards the rest of his crew scattered about. Old Man Rayleigh had been keeping the Admiral distracted, which was good, but Zoro… Zoro was gone?

“RUN, YOU GUYS!” Luffy screamed, throat raw from the force of his cry. Franky started to run, he could see him, but stopped because Nami wasn't following. Why wasn’t Nami following?! Brook- Brook was talking. Wait, no, no, no! “Brook!” He cried as Kuma tapped the newest member of the crew. Brook vanished into thin air.

He needed to move. Why didn’t he move? His legs weren’t answering his brain. His crew was vanishing before his eyes and he couldn't save them. Why couldn’t he move?! Move, damn it! Body! Listen! Move! MOVE! MOVE! MOVE-

“RUN, SANJI! PLEASE!” He tried to warn his beloved cook, only for Usopp to stand up, to try to attack. Before he could even scream- he’s gone. Usopp was gone, and then Sanji, and oh, Gods, this was happening. This wasn’t a nightmare. They’re gone, his crew was gone. “How do I…?” How do I move? How do I fight someone who, with one touch, can make me vanish, too? How do I save my crew when half of them have already vanished? How do I become the King of the Pirates if I can’t even protect the ones I love most?

Gear Two did nothing. Nothing except expend more energy that he didn’t have, he realized too late. He was flung back, wheezing with each breath as blood filled his lungs, as he struggled to cough it up. Franky was next, vanishing from sight; he heard Robin scream for him beside his own garbled screech. That’s right; Robin and Franky had gotten close. Were they lovers?

For a brief moment, Luffy wonders what it’s like to have someone love you in that way.

Until Nami screamed, breaking his thoughts. “NAMI!”

“HELP-” she’s gone.

She’s gone, and his arm was outstretched as if to grab her, to pull her into the safety of his arms. Kuma had hit him away again like an annoying gnat. He rose, turned, but it was too late as Chopper was suddenly gone. “ROBIN, RUN!” He cried helplessly, tears welling as he watched Kuma reach out, as Robin met his gaze.

She wasn’t afraid.

She was gone.

( He remembers once, when Dadan had left and hadn’t told him that she was leaving to get a few things from town. He woke to an empty house, to silence, and it feels a lot like this. This sudden dread of being alone. Of not knowing what’s happening, of what to expect next, because nothing is making sense anymore. )

His breath caught in his chest, a cry rose from his lips but only spilled out in the form of a warbling sound that’s more apt for an animal rather than a person. His fingers drug through his hair, tugged on dark, curly strands hard enough that they separated, snapping away from his skull, dragging forth sparks of pain that did nothing but agitate him further. He wheezed, blood mixing with mucus, as he leaned forward. His forehead met the ground once, twice, thrice; nails scratched at the freshly revealed dirt, breaking off with the grooves that he dug. “I couldn’t… I couldn’t save any of them!” He wheezed as tears rolled freely down his cheeks, streaked through dirt and grime and blood.

His crew was gone, because of him. Because he wasn’t able to intervene. They tried to save him, and in response, he couldn’t save any of them. What sort of shit captain was he? That man, the Admiral, was speaking but it sounded like a hundred mosquitoes buzzing within his ears. He rose up onto his knees-

“We will never meet each other again. Farewell.”

That was the last time Monkey D. Luffy saw Bartholomew Kuma. Or, the real Kuma, that is.

When he was helpless to save his crew.

“Hello? This is Dadan, are you there? Are you coming home?”

The same way he is helpless, now. Marineford is in a full out brawl, and he is trying to get to Ace, but people keep getting in his way, and they won’t fucking move, and he feels like he can’t draw enough oxygen in. “ACE!” He screams, hoping that his voice will reach his brother. “I’M COMING!” He is coming for him.

He can’t be helpless again. Not again, even as his lungs burn with the effort to breath, as his ribs ache with each expanse, as his muscles feel close to tearing as they stretch like rubber to launch him through the crowd of pirates and marines, of guns and blades and oh, god.

He can hear Ivankov yelling at what would be Kuma behind him.

He can see the platform. He can see Ace, kneeling on the platform. Ace, who is beaten and bloodied and is he crying? He can’t tell, but his big brother is right there and he can see him.

He still feels helpless, twenty feet from the platform. Like they’re back in that forest, alone, and scared, and crying for Dadan to save them. To find them. To help them.

He feels even more helpless as he kneels with a body slumped against him, with warm blood coating his front, his legs, his arms.

Monkey D. Luffy was helpless.

“Sorry, Dadan. We’re not coming home.”

💌 Share something with us about an up-and-coming work (WIP) that has you excited!

Several of my long-running fics are close to being finished, and the first one out will be my Selkie AU, Moon and Her Maiden! On the night before leaving East Blue, Shanks encounters a selkie while skinny-dipping, get a kiss for his troubles, and then decides to stick around for a while, much to Makino's horror, who really hadn't thought that far and who now has to keep her identity a secret. Cue classic secret identity tropes, moonlit swims and water kisses, and, as always, an unhelpfully meddling crew. (It's also fairly raunchy, just fyi!)

I'm almost done editing the final chapter, which clocked in at just under 30K, and with luck I'll be posting it next week! I've already posted a snippet, but from the bonus chapter that I'm totally not writing:

Moonsongs

She wondered sometimes how her mother had managed, raising a selkie child with no knowledge of her kind, and the ways she’d differed from human children.

“Are you sure this is safe?”

The question drew her eyes from the horizon to where he stood beside her, waist-deep in the surf. He was holding their baby daughter above the water, cooing excitedly at the fish below the clear surface.

“Yeah, this seems a bit premature, Makino,” a voice called from the shore.

“She’s not even walking yet!”

Turning her head found the rest of his crew were gathered on the shore behind them, their expressions conveying similar concerns. Makino had half a mind to tell them they shouldn’t be pointing fingers, who didn’t have a prudent bone between them.

Well, there was Ben, but even he looked like he might voice his concerns. Or like he desperately needed a smoke.

Having found allies to back his case, “See?” Shanks asked. “I’m not the only one with misgivings.”

“She was born in the water, Shanks,” Makino reminded him. “And she needs to learn to change at some point.”

“But she’s so little,” Shanks said, holding her closer as she giggled and kicked her feet, her sealskin slipping into her brow, the sunlight bringing out the dappled spots in the red pelt. "What if something snaps her up?"

"There's nothing big enough to eat her for miles," Makino said, reaching up to adjust her pelt until it was sitting atop her hair, her little toothless grin beaming. "Besides, I'm not worried about that. He's looking out for her."

The look he gave her told her what he thought about this particular arrangement, but while he had a temper, the Lord of the Coast wouldn't let anything happen to her daughter.

Still not convinced, “What if a current carries her off?" Shanks asked, lifting her as Rowan made a giggling lurch for the water. "Did you think about that?"

“She’s half seal,” Makino pointed out, prim. "If it does, she'll swim back."

“I don’t see what the problem is,” Dadan said, her arms crossed where she stood on the beach behind them, her tail swinging lazily. With a nod at Ace, “I tossed you in when you were a few months old, and you turned out fine. Babies are buoyant.”

Blinking, Ace looked up at her. “You did what?”

“Explains a few things,” Sabo mused, only to get an unamused look from his brother.

"At least I float," Ace said, with a nod at Luffy. "Unlike hammer boy over here."

"Eh?" Luffy asked, and seeing their looks, "Oh, right! I can't swim."

"How did you survive this long without us?" Ace sighed, adjusting his straw hat where it had slipped into his brow.

“I still think we should wait longer,” Shanks said. “What about when she’s thirty? That sounds reasonable.”

Murmured agreement from the crew ashore, as Makino briefly considered just pushing him in, baby and all.

Gooooood morning, I'm here to send you numbers 1, 2, 7, 10 and 13 from the Happy Together ask game for Yara and Ace, my beloveds. Hope you're doing well!

This got long so I'll put the answers under the cut!

1. What are your OTP’s love languages?

In terms of receiving, I headcanon Ace as a words of affirmation sort of guy-- we all know that between Garp and Dadan and all the adults in his life that Ace didn’t receive a lot of reassurance about his self-worth growing up. The only time he was probably ever praised was when he brought home dinner for the mountain bandits, and he definitely enjoyed that one time when Makino remarked on how well-behaved he was for her, so getting that sort of verbal affirmation helps chase away the doubts he feels about whether or not he deserved to be born in the first place. As for giving, Ace is always surprising Yara with little gifts he finds on his solo missions/adventures or on the islands they visit together. He just loves making her smile.

Though she may come across as a little distant and give off the occasional ‘go near me and I’ll bite you’ vibe, Yara actually loves being touched and held and getting that skin-to-skin contact with the people she trusts and cares about. She basically was never hugged or given much physical affection for the vast majority of her life, and has some pretty severe abandonment issues, so she’s very touch-starved. The first time Ace hugged her, she didn’t quite know how to react, but all she knew was that deep down, she never wanted him to stop. In terms of giving affection, Yara shows her love through acts of service. She might grumble about Ace leaving his stuff lying around, but she always picks it up and puts it back where it needs to be, and makes sure that he has clean clothes and enough food/water to last whenever he’s going to be away for an extended period of time. Whenever Ace falls asleep in the middle of a meal, she’s always patiently waiting with a napkin or a cloth for when he comes to again.

2. Is your OTP a battle couple? How do they work together?

They’re both on one of the strongest crews in the One Piece universe serving under a literal Yonko so they’d definitely fit the battle couple description! (Yara is technically second-in-command on 2nd Division under Ace, so they end up side-by-side in combat a lot). Now the fun thing about them working together in battle is their devil fruit powers. Yara’s Tōka Tōka no Mi (Pass-Pass Fruit) means that she’s basically untouchable to physical attacks, barring seastone or a strong application of haki (or the Yami Yami no Mi), and Ace’s Mera Mera no Mi, being a Logia, means essentially the same thing for him. So Yara doesn’t have to worry about accidentally hitting Ace with her sword (her devil fruit might give her an excellent defense but it has almost no offensive capabilities, so she has to make up for that with swordplay) and Ace can go wild without worrying about burning Yara. Being faced with them in combat is to endure both their terrifying powers and combat prowess as well as their (mostly Ace’s) insufferable flirting. 

7. Do they plan on getting married? Who proposes? What’s their wedding like? 

Oh, Ace was probably thinking about marriage even before he left the Moby Dick to chase after Blackbeard. He aims to live without regrets, and he’s found someone he wants to spend the rest of his life with, so why wait? (Yara probably doesn’t think much about marriage, but if Ace asked, she wouldn’t say no). In alternate universes where Ace manages to avoid his unfortunate canon fate, they get married shortly after Marineford, after they’ve recovered from their injuries. Ace wanted to come up with an elaborate proposal plan and spent weeks crafting something, scrapping it, and annoying the hell out of Marco in the process. In the end, Ace and Yara are probably doing something simple like looking up at the stars and talking late into the night and he finally just blurts it out unprompted. (Yara is a bit surprised at first, but she eventually responds with a smile and a “Yes, of course I’ll marry you, you wonderful idiot.”)

The wedding is kind of chaotic, but in the best possible way. It was one of those things where it was supposed to be a small wedding (at Yara’s insistence, she really did not want to make a big deal out of it), but more and more people kept getting added to the guest list out of concerns it would be rude to not invite someone, so the event turns into a bit of a who’s who of the pirate world. Whitebeard’s entire fleet is invited, as are the Straw Hats because of course Luffy wouldn’t miss his brother’s wedding for the world. Curly Dadan and the mountain bandits also come, and Dadan spends the entire time ugly-sobbing into a handkerchief. At some point, Shanks’ crew stops by and brings a fresh round of booze with them. Yara begrudgingly (after many long discussions) allows Ace to extend an invitation to Mihawk, who surprisingly shows up. They find a nice uninhabited summer island for the venue, probably one under Whitebeard’s protection. If Whitebeard is alive, he officiates. If not, Jinbei does. Ace definitely cries a bit at the altar, which makes Yara tear up as well. (Neither of them probably ever imagined finding someone who would love them this much). The celebrations last for a solid week, but partway through, Ace and Yara sneak away on Ace’s striker to start their honeymoon early. Afterwards, Ace takes every possible opportunity to refer to Yara as his wife. Saying it aloud never fails to make him grin.

10. What’s their sleeping arrangement? Who falls asleep first?

Ace can fall asleep anywhere, at any time, so Yara has had to learn to adapt to that. Whenever it happens, she just shifts around and tries to make them both as comfortable as possible until he wakes up. He pretty much always falls asleep first and will actively seek Yara out whenever he wants to take a nap. Ace’s devil fruit makes him the perfect person to nap with, so Yara almost never turns him down. It’s not an uncommon sight on the Moby Dick to find them curled up somewhere, having a rest. 

13. What do they love most about the other?

For Yara, loving Ace is like loving the sun-- he’s so bright and warm and passionate and all-consuming, but what she loves most about him is his kindness. He can befriend almost anyone and actively helps others even when it doesn’t necessarily benefit him to do so. (This is the man she watched spend days crafting a very large hat for a giant just to give him some protection from the elements, after all). Ace touches the lives of everyone he encounters, commanding such loyalty from his first crew that they were willing to come back and try to rescue him after he was defeated by Whitebeard, risking annihilation from a much stronger crew just to get their beloved captain back. She counts herself lucky to have been drawn into the orbit of such a bright, wonderful, absolute sweetheart of a man who brags about his little brother fifty times a day and manages to maintain his cheerful demeanour despite how much the world might hate him for the blood that runs through his veins. When Ace turned his kindness towards her, how could she not fall in love with him? 

Yara’s beauty might have first turned Ace’s head in her direction, but that wasn’t what held his attention there. He appreciates her steadfast loyalty to her crew and her sharp wit, but what he loves most about her is her honesty. Yara says what she means and means what she says, so he can always count on her to be straightforward with him. He was absolutely terrified of what she might think upon finding out he’s Gol D. Roger’s son, but when she smiled at him and assured him it changed nothing, he knew that she meant it. Whenever he has his self-doubts, he knows he can come to her and that she won’t just coddle his feelings, but will truly and honestly reassure him of the value that he brings to the world and to the lives of everyone around him. He trusts her opinion more than perhaps anyone else’s and feels like he’s found a partner who truly sees him for all that he is. His heart is in her hands, and he’s certain that when she says she’ll protect it with all her might, that she means it.

Krampus!Law AU

Young krampus Law coming to take Luffy to hell for being bad and instead ends up being non-consensually assimilated into Luffy's found family and he doesn't have enough energy as a person to fight it. (He's also too week to that smile but no one has to know that.) It goes downhill from there and they eventually get married and adopt twp cats and a little cerberus puppy (is not very little after a few months). Law only bothers to actually take Luffy to hell when Luffy's at the end of his lifespan so they can keep being happily married (in hell)

Law's grandpa Is Not Pleased™ but when did Law ever care what Sengoku has to say? He'll come around eventually anyway, he's too soft (Cora's words)

Cora is very supportive and he comes visit every sunday with meat freshly roasted over hell's fire (made by Baby 5 and Baarbara the hell-goat because Cora might be a krampus and he might live in hell but he is also NOT allowed anywhere near a fire)

Ace thinks Luffy dating a krampus is fucking hilarious. Sabo likes to threaten Law any chance he can get just for the hell of it but he actually kind of likes him

Garp also thinks it's fucking hilarious but he also threatens Law every time he sees him (and he means it)

Dadan is the one who accidentally called Law to take Luffy after the shitty little brat broke one too many of her favourite mugs, glasses, plates, chairs, and dining tables. She's not even surprised that, not only is Luffy still running around breaking things, but he's now also dragging this poor, poor tired krampus along. She apologises to Law for the first time 2 minutes after Law first steps into their house

(Law just sighs and glances at Luffy, who grins and waves at him excitedly, and Law then can do nothing but shrug and mumble something about "his life getting ruined and for what? A smile so bright it blinds him? How disgusting.")

(Dadan is not entirely sure how she feels about Law's disturbingly relaxed tone but she also isn't getting paid enough to deal with That™)

(That™ being a painfully obvious crush)

The Straw Hats are not even surprised when Luffy introduces his new krampus friend to them and they all just look at him, look at Luffy, look at each other, shrug, and that's it

It only occurs to them a week later that Law is from hell and can therefore share info on unexplored lands, powerful demons, exotic kitchen, unknown plants, funny bugs (a question that was not well received by some), different medicine technics, ancient, undiscovered relics, and--oh god do these questions ever stop?!

Bepo, Penguin and Shachi freak out for a moment but then they notice how happy Law looks talking about how much Luffy drives him crazy and that's about enough for them

(Shachi and Penguin like to whine and complain about how Law should take his stupid pining elsewhere, some of us are lonely, you ass)

(They also like to actively and loudly plan the wedding years before it even becomes an option for Law and Luffy. They do it to tease and bother Law but also because once it comes down to it, they WILL be ready)

Doffy is that one aunt who drops by once a year unannounced, tries to get all the dirt on everyone and everything, shares the dirt on everyone and everything (without being asked), and then fucks off and is never heard of again until the next time he decides it's time to bother his favourite nephew and his cute little boyfriend again just because he thinks Law's reactions are funny

(Law has to recover for a week after each and every one of Doffy's visits)

" just save your breath, okay? you're gonna be fine. "

A subtle cough was presented to the person that saved him. "Heh..finally you came" Ace wheezed out, his eyes squinted in pain. His voice unable to reach his throat as one hand held the burn that was slowly growing and the other lay limp to his side.

"W-What happened?" The usual prideful commander lay limp, looking up. He didn't know what had happened. All he knew was that Ace was in the middle of a battle, shooting his finger guns at the enemy and the second he turned around, he was punched so hard through something, and now was here. With broken bones and a hurting painful body.

Scratches littered his face, body and hands. He felt tired. Oh so tired. His hair was dirty and greasy from his fighting.

"Did I..win?" He asked the blonde who only helped him, feeling energy slip through his body. His heart thumped, his body was in pain, his head throbbed.

This wasn't the plan, this wasn't how it was supposed to go, this wasn't the way he wanted it.

Chaos and destruction was to be expected, but not to this degree. His eyes moved, glancing at his savior then up at the sky, as if the holy gods were shining upon him.

As he lied there, his mind had considered the opportune times where he could have done more as a crewmemeber, been more as a brother, or even simply commanding more as the Commander.

As Ace lied there, he felt himself think about things, think about his childhood. With everyone there, Dadan yelling at him, him yelling at Luffy and Sabo..ah memories. Closing his eyes for a moment, he let himself be whisked off to dream land, but still keeping the fight to stay alive and stay awake mentally.

Physically, he was exhausted, his energy spent. He didn't want to accept defeat, but he was bruised, battered, a mess and most importantly...

Burnt out

The ball of his life was now in the man's court that was here to try save him. He didn't know why but at the same time, he was happy to have found someone.

"Thank you..."

first the sight of ace’s cold lifeless body in front of a wailing boy he called his grandson, and then the tears and fists of a mourning mother. after all that the worst he could do is face you, the person who loved and adored your grandchildren he knew your love for them knew no bounds. breaking the news to you would be the hardest thing he would have to do.

his hand was lingering above the door knob, as his hand shook he chuckled at his own nervousness. a lifetime of righting pirates and marines gone rouge couldn’t make him shake like this, but you? he could feel the guilt weighing down on him already. the look he imagined you giving him broke him down already.

when he opened the door he was expecting you yell like dadan, mourn like luffy, anything would have been better than silence. unfortunately for him he was treated exactly to what he was dreading.

“y/n?” he winced at how softly he called your name, he sounded like he was a dam that was about to explode.

you barely turned around to look at him, your eyes were glued to the screen ‘recap of marineford’ it was called. you could barely see the screen due to the tears.

“tell me you didn’t just watch him die.”

“y/n i-”

“tell me garp!” you shouted with tears streaming down your cheeks, when you faced him he could hear his own heart breaking.

you grabbed the front of his shirt and forced him to face you “did you or did you not watch him die.”

he nodded slowly and watched your face of sorrow and heart break mold into a face of rage and disgust.

“you chose your damn job over your family?”

he found himself raising his own voice “it’s my job to protect people-“

“oh so ‘people’ doesn’t include your god damn grandson? you know what i don’t even want to talk to you right now. you can go back on your ship where apparently your damn job is more important than you family!”

you walked over to the door and held it open indicating for him to leave.

Ace kicks his little feet by the river bank, absolutely NOT pouting and certainly not sulking about having to shoulder the blame for his little gang’s recent prank since he’s the leader. Of course, the others would argue that they were the leaders too, most of all Luffy, followed by Sabo, and then--

“Found you!”

All he can manage is a garbled, very unmanly squeal as Akaru tackles him into the water from behind, laughing the whole way down.

Ace’s head surfaces with a cough, glaring daggers at his childhood friend. The water isn’t very deep, both kids can sit in it just fine without their chins touching the flow. Still, he storms to the shore, none too happy with the gesture and leaving the redhead to soak on her own.

“Aww, c’mon Ace. You love baths!” Akaru needles after him, finding her friend wringing his shirt out behind a large boulder.

“Yeah, when I choose to have them,” Ace hisses in response, turning his back on her to force the damp singlet back on.

Akaru watches the way his back freckles twist and stretch with every movement, notices a tension in his shoulders and feels an emotion she can’t quite articulate yet pool in the well of her heart, and frowns.

“Ace,”

“What.”

“Are you okay? You haven’t been playing with us all day. Not since Dadan yelled at you this morning...”

Ace tries to hide the way his body immediately stiffens but he can’t and he knows it. He resigns to leaning against that boulder with his knees to his chest, face buried and pride long dashed on the rocks of the shore. He sighs, trying to find the words to even explain what he’s feeling.

“Woah, hey! A-Are you crying? Ace, you know I’ll beat up whoever--”

“What?! No way, I’m just- I’m trying to think! Shut up already!” 

Ace wants to damn near scream, he ruffles up his own hair and muffles one into his shirt, still damp from his impromptu swim earlier. Akaru still crouches next to him, visibly confused but more importantly concerned. Ace shows another toothless glare, this time pulling the redhead down for her to sit with him properly instead of just looking down at his sad little conundrum.

They stay there in silence for a while, enjoying the afternoon breeze and listening to Luffy’s echoes of laughter from a little bit away while Sabo chases after him. Ace is calmer now, he feels he can do this.

“Akaru-n,” he pauses and she straightens up a little at the nickname, something typically only their little brother ever used for her now being said by an uncharacteristically serious Ace.

“Y’know when Dadan told us you were a girl, right? Why did you let us keep thinking you were a boy?”

“Oh yeah, I remember, I thought it was really funny! All of your faces were really stupid!!” Akaru lets out another full belly-laugh, heartily slapping her knee at the fond memory when she realizes that once again, Ace isn’t laughing with her. If anything though, he looks a little pained.

“Ace... what did Dadan tell you this morning?”

He turns away but doesn’t retract from her hand over his. Ace welcomes what little comfort he allows himself.

“That certain kids, have to act in certain ways, in order to keep themselves safe. That it’s okay for me to act like the way I do now but- but when I grow up, I’ll have to change. And-- it’s not fair! Why am I the only one that has to hear this, and why did she tell Luffy and Sabo to leave before she did?!”

He didn’t understand how or why at the time but their mother’s words wounded him, be it intentionally or not and as well intentioned as Dadan may have been, enough for Ace to grip his pants like a lifeline and for his scrawny shoulders to shake with such unbridled emotion it made his stomach churn.

Akaru didn’t have the words to explain then either, but she knew enough to pull her brother into a hug and let Ace cry it out properly - bitter tears soaking her partially dried t-shirt as Ace desperately tried not to alert their other two of their whereabouts, although by this point he knew Luffy and Sabo would be looking for them.

Magra and Pochi find the two fireballs fast asleep about half an hour later, the former cradling the children as gently as he could so not to wake them during his trek back to home base.

Ace and Akaru caught colds that week from the latter’s little ‘river tackle’ stunt.

Well, you just cooked, making breakfast for your boys. "(Y/N)!" You turn around to see dadan.

"Yes, dadan? Is there a problem?" You question. "Have you seen the boys? Their weren't here for a moment, " said dadan.

"Oh! I just asked the boys to go look food to eat, " you said before adding ingredients, dadan sighed.

"I got a say (Y/N), I don't know how you handle with this, boys," said dadan.

You smiled at dadan. "Just get along with them." Dadan, sit down, "we lucky to have you here dear, but you know you're the lucky mother they have, " said dadan

"Aw gheese, thanks, dadan. I'm very thankful for taking care of me and my sister, " you smile. Dadan smiled a little.

"Food almost ready, Dogra, Magra! Can you go outside if the boys are here!?" You asked.

Margra and dogra went outside and waited.

A couple of minutes later, the boys are back, and they got a crocodile.

And they were shocked, "Hey mum! We got a crocodile! Isn't big!?" Luffy yelled.

"It sure it big! Luffy! Come on, boys, wash your hands. You have lots of fun hunting!" You yelled, the boys run inside.

You picked up the crocodile with your bear hands and trag the crocodile inside. Gotta say you pretty strong, though.

"Mom, when is the food ready?" Ace question, "any time now, and makino is coming over!" You smile as watch the boys cheers.

Makino arrives, and you two start working. You ask your boys to set out the table, and they did.

"Food is ready! I hope you're hungry!" You said. Everyone started eating, you fed luffy some meat, and then you felt a chill.

Like someone is coming, and it is getting closer and closer.

You stand up quickly, sabo looked at you. "Mom, is there something wrong?" Sabo question, you didn't answered.

And your older sister felt it, too. The door slammed open, causing everyone to stop what they were doing.

Someone wearing a black coat got dirty and ripped off. You immediately grabbed the knife throw at person.

Put it, grabbed it.

And throws it back to you. You grabbed it with your two fingers, "THE HELL!???!!!! IS GOING ON HERE!!!???" Dadan yelled.

"It been so long since I met you (Y/N), i been so worried about you. We havd been looking for you," said the person. Everybody looked at you.

"Mom, do you know this person?" Ace question. "Yes, it was my old friend when I was little, (F/N)" you said with mad glare.

(F/N) means friend named.

"Correct, look at you, you grown-up do fast," said (F/N). "What do you want?" You question.

"I'm here. Take you back your home where you belong, " she said, your eyes widened. home the you belong where you were happy when you little.

"What!?" (S/N) yelled. "We have been looking for you two, but now I finally found you, I can take you guys back home" (F/N) said.

"But I love it here, I been saved by other pirates, and I had family b-but I do want to go home, but there is something I want to do" you said looked at your boys.

"They're brainwashed you" (F/N) said you shook your head. "no they didn't, I know I couldn't trust pirate, but there some pirate who are kind an-"

But you were cut when (F/N) smashed you with glass of bottle on your head cause you to fall and started bleeding.

"MOM!!" Luffy yelled, running toward you. "HOW DARE YOU ATTACK MY MOTHER!!!!! YOU'LL BAY!!!!!!!" Ace yelled, grabbed his weapon so as sabo.

"She is not your mother," said (F/N), ace got angry and tried to attack (F/N). But (F/N) pushed ace and sabo on the wall and grabbed luffy hair.

Luffy screamed, and dadan crew attacks but failed (F/N) was too fast. "NO! STOP IT!!! YOU HURTING HIM!!!!" You scream, tears coming down on your cheeks.

(F/N) didn't listen, then pulled luffy away, throwing him to (S/N). (S/N) catches luffy and walks toward grabbing your neck.

And started choking you, you grabbed her arm no used. "NO!! STOP!! DON'T KILL HER!!!" Sabo cries. But somehow, a gunshot appeared and shot (F/N) left arms.

It was (S/N), "GET THE FUCK AT OF HERE!!! AND DON'T COME BACK EVER AGAIN!!!!" she yelled.

Soon after that (F/N) left, the smoke circled around, and she disappeared. And that you pass out. You can everybody calling your name.

You woke up your eyes. It was shining and bright. You looked around to see luffy, sabo, and Ace sleeping with you.

Ace opened his eyes and wide to see your awake. "MOM!! YOUR AWAKE!!! AUNT (S/N) SHE AWAKE!!! MOM AWAKE!!!" Ace screams so loud.

Everyone wakes up. Luffy and sabo were crying, so the others. You were happy.

"BOYS!!! COME ON!! JUST LET ME TREAT HER!!" (S/N) yelled. While your sister is treating you, the boys are doing work.

Like Ace cleans the floor, sabo gives you food, and luffy gives you medicine.

When it is nighttime, you have to take a rest, but... "Okay, are you ready?" said (S/N), you nodded, but you here a creak.

You and your sister look to the boys standing on the holding blanket, pillow, and toys.

"Boys, you should be bed. What are you doing?" (S/N) question, "I want sleep with mom, " Luffy said.

"But -" but you cut off (S/N). She signed, "Okay, I only let you boys sleep with your mother only if you don't hurt her, got it?" (S/N) question.

The boys nodded and ran to sleep with you.

"Well, goodnight" (S/N) said, "Goodnight." You and went to sleep.

🧡 (platonic fluff) ASL brothers with an elder sister

you were the first kid under Dadan’s watch, dropped of by your self-declared grandpa Garp despite you clinging to his leg, begging him to not leave you there alone with the mountain bandits

it was a lonely place out there for a little kid, but it all changed when Garp showed up again a few months later with a toddler in his arm

that’s how you met Ace and from one day to the other became a big sister

growing up together, you always watched over the boy, protecting him from all the dangers the mountains held until he was old enough to do it on his own (which was quite soon - he and his metal pipe were unstoppable) 

Ace was a grumpy boy, you knew about his past but he never wanted to talk about it which you respected, but still found subtle way to let him know that you were here

you both made friends with Sabo, the nobles kid who was nothing like them and soon the three of you were inseparable

now you had two feral brothers with an iron pipe and anger issues

but oh boy how sweet they could be once you all settled down for the night, huddled together under a blanket, the three of you against the world 

you were always a bit worried for your brothers as they were drawn to trouble and mischief, but you also knew you could rely on them no matter what

when you were not with them, they often brought you little treasures from their raids, small jewelry that reminded them of you, fresh pastries they stole, flowers they picked from someone’s garden

a few years had passed when Garp showed up again with another boy, younger than the three of you and you immediately were fond of him

he was like the sun, shining so brightly, you wondered how anyone could ever think badly of him

Ace was not pleased at all about the new arrival and was gone longer than usual ever since Luffy appeared

you tried to mediate between your brothers but also figured that some things just take time, which is why you let them be and gave them space to settle things on their on, all while watching over all three of them the best you could

you were there to tend Luffy’s wounds when he came back from the jungle all beaten up and bruised and you listened to Ace rant about how annoyed he was, rubbing his back consolingly

Sabo and you often meet up secretly, discussing and exchanging information about the other two and how they seemed to get along, agreeing that it was best to let them be while keeping an eye on both

only after the incident with Porchemy things got better, when you and your brothers came to Luffy’s rescue, the four of you fought side by side for the very first time, protecting each other fiercely

from then on the quartet of you became infamous throughout whole Goa Kingdom, causing trouble and mischief wherever you went, inseparable

you loved your little brothers with your whole heart, feeling the proudest when they called you their big sister, until one day the four of you made a pact over sake to make it “official”

even though you might not be related by blood you’ll be siblings forever

you made a promise to each other: sailing the world at the age of 17

being the oldest, you knew you’d be the first one to set sail then and the thought of leaving them behind hurt you, but you also knew in your heart that they would find you again no matter how big and stormy the sea was

and they did, one after the other, each reunion full of tears and laughter, some of shock, but all as if only a day had passed since you last saw each other again

you never want to let them go ever again, wrapping your arms around them so tightly (also wondering when all of them got so tall) and whispering how glad you are to see them again and how much you missed them

Ace buries his face in the crook of your neck, letting you hug him for what feels like an hour, his heart sighing in relief to be with the person again who was the first to give him a glimpse of what it feels like to be loved; introducing you to his crew one by one, wanting everyone to meet his awesome big sister

the reunion with Sabo is blurry as tears shoot in your eyes, in disbelief you grab his face and cry out loud; for so long you had thought he was dead and you both whisper apologies over and over again, for not looking out for him and for forgetting you temporarily, but it all doesn’t matter now that you’re both here now

seeing Luffy again fills your heart with so much joy as he wraps his gummy arms around you multiple times, rubbing his cheek on yours, his laughter warming your heart like sunshine does; he is so excited to introduce you to his crew, babbling how you raised him and how strong you are

they all carry your bounty poster with them, presenting it proudly everyone who asked, bragging about their big sister

you love your found family and they love you so, so dearly

i wrote up a whooole feral luffy AU bit on twitter last night so am posting it here too (slightly cleaned up) hahaha

Feral luffy AU where the basis is that Luffy is the one who, somehow, set sail the day the celestial dragons arrived and had his boat shot down. 

 He's considerably further out to sea when this happens, and when he falls into the water, he's swept away by a strange ocean current. He winds up on a deserted island surrounded by the same strange currents and it keeps him stranded. 

 Ace and Sabo are devastated by the loss of Luffy, as is Garp, Makino, Dadan and the bandits, and later on Dragon and Shanks when they find out, attempts are made to locate Luffy's body but they never find him, the assumption that he sank too far out into the ocean due to his devil fruit. Ace & Sabo grow up significantly less cheerful without Luffy's presence, but their bond to one another is as strong as ever.

 Sabo fakes his death after begging Garp for help, anything to throw off his family from ever finding him again. Garp agrees because his hatred of certain nobility has grown significantly after Luffy's "death", and he can't stand the thought of losing another grandson.

 Luffy meanwhile, adapts as best he can. Surviving in this new jungle is painful, but doable despite the constant near brushes with death. The true hardship is how lonely he is without his brothers. Luffy has always thrived in the company of others, and without any he struggles, but again, Luffy adapts. 

 He manages to befriend some of the animals in the jungle, and accidentally discovers conqueror's haki when he nearly loses his hat to a predator, his one link to something beyond this island.

 The animals can't replace his brothers, but they ward off the loneliness. Throughout this time, Luffy makes multiple attempts to sail off the island with handmade rafts. Craftsmanship has never been his strong suit however, so they crumble instantly in the harsh currents.

 Perhaps due to luck, the currents always wash him back ashore instead of allowing him to sink and drown. Luffy's speech also slowly degrades over time. As much as he loves talking to his animal friends, the inability to hear someone else speak causes his words to slur and distort

 Ace and Sabo still hold true to their promise to set sail at age 17, but decide that they want to sail together instead of separating. When they finally set sail, they decide to take their time getting to the Grandline, exploring more of the East Blue at a leisurely pace.

After roughly a week of sailing, they get caught in a freak storm and are swept away by a giant wave where they too end up caught in the same strange current that stole Luffy all those years ago. The two wind up unconscious on Luffy's island, where Luffy finds them on the beach.

Luffy doesn't recognize them however, only that wow! For the first time since he arrived, there are other humans on the island with him that are alive! It's an exciting occurrence, and Luffy drags their bodies to the jungle where the tide won't reach.

When poking and prodding don't wake the two, Luffy sets off to gather food for his guests. He still remembers how tired and hungry he was when he first washed ashore, and figures they'd feel the same. As Luffy comes back, Ace wakes up in a panic.

Luffy rushes Ace in excitement and babbles. It's nearly incomprehensible to Ace however, especially in his panicked just-woken hazy-brained state. All Ace wants is to know where Sabo is and where this place is, and pushes Luffy away.

That's when Ace notices Sabo is lying just a few feet away asleep. The tension leaves him immediately and he's able to actually pay attention to the stranger trying to talk to him. 

Luffy is young and shorter than what he would have been had he been able to grow up on Dawn Island. His hair is long, wild and tangled, and he's dressed in furs and leathers. As Ace is studying him, he asks if he's the one who saved him and Sabo. 

For a moment Luffy stares silent, mind untangling the words until they make sense, and then he nods exuberantly. He tries to explain that he found them unconscious on the beach along with their boat, but Ace can barely decipher Luffy's speech. It sounds like someone speaking with a heavy accent at lightning speed.

But it’s then Ace notices the faint scar under Luffy's eye, and the strawhat hanging off his back. That in combination with Luffy's excited movements and speech sets off confusing alarms in his head.

Luffy's dead, Ace knows this, but he forces this strange kid to calm down and asks for his name. Again it takes a moment for Luffy to understand, and he replies. There's that same strange lilt to his words, but it's clear. Monkey D. Luffy! and it's said with a wide, proud grin.

Ace's world tilts then. Luffy? MONKEY D. LUFFY? His brain feels like its shorting out, refusing to register this new bit of information. He thinks he chokes a reply of some kind, but his mind feels blank. Luffy only laughs, not noticing Ace's shock.

In broken speech he asks for Ace's name too, but Ace doesn't hear his question, can only stare at Luffy's face. It can't be Luffy, he thinks. Because if it is... IF IT IS... They're only roughly a week's sail from Dawn Island. Just 7 days.

Is this boy trying to tell Ace that Luffy, in these past 7 years, was only a 7 days boat ride away? And they simply didn't look hard enough? He was here all alone while Ace and Sabo moved on? Ace's heart feels like it's constricting as his vision tunnels in on Luffy.

Luffy's finally noticed that this stranger is looking pale and ill, and pats him in worry. Is he sick? Does he need food? Are you okay, he asks. Ace grabs Luffy's arm then and stares at him with a strange expression. Luffy, it's me, he says, voice shaking. Ace.

Luffy's brows furrow in confusion and he tilts his head. Ace repeats himself, voice growing stronger. I'm Ace! he exclaims, and waits (prays) to see the light of recognition in Luffy's eyes.

Luffy mouths Ace's words silently to himself with frown. Ace? ...ACE! Luffy suddenly leaps towards Ace, landing directly on his chest and crushing him against a tree. He's directly on him and he's got Ace's head clasped roughly between his hands as he stares at his face intently

Ace? Luffy asks out loud, and starts repeating it over and over as he studies Ace's face. Luffy's grip is stronger than expected but Ace manages to give a jerky nod. The piercing stare breaks and Luffy's eyes water. ACE! he cries out in joy and it's the only word he can say.

Luffy wildly paws at Ace's face, then shoulders and arms, as if trying to make sure he's really there, and he's laughing and crying all at once. He then suddenly turns to Sabo on the ground and starts patting his body. He looks up at Ace with a hopeful smile and asks, Sabo?

Ace chokes back a sob because oh. OH. It's really Luffy! He was here this whole time and they never knew! Why hadn't they just looked HARDER? Luffy meanwhile crows in joy and triumph that BOTH his brothers are here with him. 

Ace gets down next to Sabo and starts violently shaking him. Wake up WAKE UP, how can he be SLEEPING when the greatest thing they thought they had lost was BACK. Sabo groans awake and is greeted by the pained teary face of Ace and an equally teary, but grinning stranger

 the shock of the scene jolts Sabo upright and he asks what's wrong? What happened? Ace just points to the boy beside him. It's Luffy, he says through clenched teeth, as if he were trying his best to stave off a breakdown. Huh? Sabo replies, what about Luffy?

 it's LUFFY, Ace grits out again, and this time Luffy chimes in with a cheery, Sabo! and leans in close to his face. Sabo is still confused and Ace nearly snarls in frustration. Luffy's ALIVE, Ace growls, and Luffy laughs. Sabo stares at Luffy and understanding slowly dawns.

 Luffy? he asks in disbelief, and Luffy nods excitedly before crowding in Sabo's face even more. Sabo! Luffy says with a smile and starts repeating his name like he had done with Ace earlier. Sabo, Luffy's been here this whole time, Ace says in a pained whisper.

 This whole time? And the same realization that Ace had grows in Sabo. Luffy, you've been here, all alone...? And we were so close? Sabo's body moves and wraps Luffy's body in a bone crushing hug. Luffy, I- we didn't know! Sabo stammers but it sounds like a terrible excuse.

 Guilt is devouring both Ace and Sabo but Luffy is only smiling. He's overjoyed that his brothers are here, and with their help he can definitely get off this island now! Things do work out!

 We have to go back to Dawn Island, Sabo says suddenly. We need to take Luffy home and we- we gotta tell Gramps! And Dadan and Makino! Luffy's okay! He's okay! And it's like a dam breaks and Sabo is the first one to break down into a full-body sob.

 Luffy gives a cry of dismay and does his best to comfort Sabo. Ace gives in and wraps both Luffy and Sabo in a hug. Both older brothers are whispering apologies to Luffy responds with just wrapping his arms several times around them both in one of his infamous rubbery hugs.

 like luffy had tried to explain earlier, the brothers' ship is beached on the coast and, surprisingly, only suffering a few minor scuffs. their departure is fairly swift, only waiting for the ideal weather after gathering some supplies and luffy's scant belongings

 Perhaps one or two of Luffy's animal friends joins them, but regardless, with the help of a 3 man crew, a sturdy ship, and an actual navigator, Luffy finally escapes the island, and the 3 brothers head home.

 Now all Ace and Sabo have to worry about is helping Luffy readjust to human civilization........
