!MARINEFORD SPOILERS!
☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
Tumblr media
The battle had started around 2 hours ago, 43 pirate ships had arrived at marineford to save Portgas D. Ace, including you. The marines plans to speed up the exucution were in full circle even with Whitebeards statregic planing. You stood aboard the deck of the Moby Dick, alongside your father Whitebeard. You had come to save ace too, The love of your life.
Your breaths came out staggered as you watched the events before you unfold, The death of little Oars Jr, A marine ship hauling Ace’s kid brother falling from the sky, everyone fighting to get into the plaza.. You thought you had seen it all until one of the seven warlords , pirate princess Boa Hancock defend and protect Aces kid brother from the marines as he too attempted to infiltrate the plaza alongside multiple divisions of the Whitebeard crew along with sworn allies they had made over the decades.
Your heart pounded in you chest as you hopped down from the deck, your feet almost slipping against the ice, you let out a elongated breath as you began to run into the midst of the fighting. Sword in hand as you fought marines left and right. As a fleet commander you were a main target for the few Admirals that were attacking the pirates to keep them out of the plaza. You looked up only to lock eyes with your beloved, chained, beaten, and bruised. The scene along made your gut tumble, he was resting on his knees, head hung low, face stained with tears. You focused on him, not the battle around you, his eyes widened and he yelled out for you but a marine had already jumped and tackled you, knocking your sword a good distance away. You yelped in surprise as the marine held a sharp sword against your neck, your hands just blocking the blade from slicing your throat open. The blade dug into the palms of your hands as you pushed back, the stinging sensation only growing the more you fought against the marine, you closed your eyes in agony as you continued to use your strength to push him off. The marine soon went flying as you mustered up enough strength to throw him off, blood leaked from your hands, your breath now ragged, the swords locked around Ace, breath tightening in your chest as you scrambled for your sword.
“ACE!”
Ace looked down from his post, hearing your guttural scream was torture enough, alongside with having to bear the trouble of a whole war being caused over his execution.
“(NAME!) STAY BACK PLEASE-! YOULL GET KILLED!”
The sound of aces voice only fueled the fight in you. your hand clenched around your blade as you sprinted to the post, but someone had tripped you, your head hit the ice with a cracking sound, and you blacked out.
You were awoken god knows how long later to Marco kneeling above you, protecting you from the attack of the marines, Ace was standing beside him, along with his brother Luffy. Your eyes widened , seeing him free and alive was everything to you. You reached out for him. Luffy ran off to fetch what looked like a piece of paper floating against the wind. You looked away for a second to check on Marco and before you could blink the sound of impact and beads hitting the ground filled your ears, everything else went silent. The sounds of swords clashing ceased to exist as you looked up, The scene was graphic, Admiral Akainus fist straight through aces torso, Luffy on the ground looking up, paper in hand.
Your eyes widened as sound of your own gasp brought you back to reality as you screamed out his name, until your breath couldn’t take it anymore and you gasped for air, you tried to crawl to him, but Marco had grabbed you by your arms, hands resting under your shoulders as you squirmed and screamed out. Ace fell to his knees. You fell to yours.
“Ace…No..”
Memories flooded your brain, Of him holding you close on warm nights, using his devil fruit power to warm you from the cold as you sat on the deck of the ship and stargazed.
How his soft hands would capture yours and pull you into a loving and soft kiss.
How his eyes blazed with passion on adventures.
How he had promised to spend his life with you, promised to continue to take you on his adventures, promised to never part with you.
You felt sick, your meal from earlier rising in your throat.
Then he fell, right into Luffys arms. Your eyes watered instantly. Tears streaming down your face as you sat there. On your knees. Sobbing.
Marco stood in front of you, preventing you from getting to him, preventing you from reaching your one and only.
But that wasn’t enough to stop you. You quickly lunged over to them, even in your conditions, completely ignoring the risks.
“Ace-!”
“Ace…?”
He was silent for a moment, other than his sobbing, you sat at his side, arms wrapped around his, his fingers curling around yours as Luffy supported his body weight.
“Thank you… for loving someone like me…”
His voice was echoed in your ears, your heart stopping as the fingers that were curled right around your own grew limp and fell, along with the rest of his body, right onto the ice. There before you, Dead, was your lover. Portgas D. Ace.
The scream of Aces brother made your ears ring, you didn’t know what to do, you reached out to him and pulled him up.
“Ace..? ACE?!”
Tears streamed down your cheeks, hot and salty against your lips, face red from screaming and crying, his body was cold and limp, he was no longer with you, the denial hit like a brick, you continued to scream his name until marco had to drag you out of the battlefield and back onto the ship.
That scene looped over and over again in your dreams, you awoke from your sleep drenched in sweat, Blood still staining you clothes and hair from the events of last night, you went to step out of bed and realized you were in your own room. You hadn’t been in your own room in months, it was tidy and unsettling. Your heart thumped in your chest as you wobbled to the door, slipping out and staring into the sky, the early morning sunrise was painted with all kinds of colors that reminded you of him. You felt sick, the throbbing headache you hadn’t noticed before kicking in.
You remembered the adventures you two used to go on, the night you and him danced together like your lives would never be the same.. the way he held his head like a hero. But you knew deep down his memory , his legacy would live on.
“You will be remembered..”
Your voice was groggy and quiet, not and octave than a whisper.
“Long live.. The walls we crashed through… I had the time of my life with you, Ace.”
You said even quieter, a single tear dripping down your cheek.

On top of the Punk Hazard opening being gay, I was thinking about how in any other anime there would be hints of romantic potential in this theme of Law not only saving Luffy's life ("on a whim"), but also him protecting Luffy's signature straw hat: his most precious material item. His very identity, in a sense. The way Law says, "[Buggy's] throwing something," and knows it's important enough to wait to catch it, even when the Polar Tang needs to submerge and Bepo's shouting at him that they need to go.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bro did NOT need to keep it on his person at all times in Amazon Lily. What was that about. And then, my favorite - when Rayleigh says Luffy must be on the island, and we get that close-up of Law clenching the hat tighter. That's the only insight we get into his thoughts, and then he and his crew leave without saying goodbye. He doesn't even see Luffy return from the jungle with his own eyes.

My take on Sir Crocodile's past, including the possibility of the CrocoParent theory
(Because I can't help thinking about it, in the midst of Kuma and Bonney's heart-wrenching flashback...)
Crocodile is one of the few Warlords we still hardly know anything about, but we're bound to know about his past at some point (same for Mihawk with whom he's currently working, as well as Moria who stole like half (?) of the Rocks Pirates' corpses), starting with the panel that launched all the theories, back in Impel Down :
Tumblr media
Thanks to Kuma's flashback, we know Ivankov used to be a slave to the Celestial Dragons up until God's Valley. As for what happened at God's Valley, we don't know the full story yet but what we know is that...
Tumblr media
...the Rocks Pirates were defeated and disbanded by the alliance between Garp and Roger. Some (?) of them were cloned by MADS (like Stussy for a still unknown reason) and Roger then became the next biggest threat of piracy.
Their leader's name was Xebec and other people have already explained that it possibly is related to Sebek/Sobek, an ancient Egyptian deity represented either in its form or as a human with a crocodile head. And, as we all know thanks to the Alabasta arc, Sir Crocodile is strongly associated with Sobek/Sebek too.
From there, it's not a stretch to imagine that Sir Crocodile is Rocks D. Xebec's child and was also present on God's Valley, which is how Crocodile and Ivankov possibly first "met". Ivankov witnessed Rocks' defeat as well as his child's survival...
Tumblr media
...probably thanks to Whitebeard. Because, considering how the government tracked Ace and Luffy because of their dads, it's clear that any child of Xebec would be hunted by the government just as much and, like he did for Ace, Whitebeard probably saved and offered shelter to Xebec's kid for a while.
Whitebeard saving Croc as a child on God's Valley could be the reason why Croc seemingly hated Whitebeard so much : Whitebeard saving him instead of avenging Rocks, his captain, on God's Valley and then later probably defeated Crocodile, when Croc decided to become a pirate and went after the One Piece, could explain the animosity that we saw during Marineford.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anyway, because of God's Valley, this could be the secret Iva knows about Croc: he's the surviving child of Rocks D. Xebec, thanks to Whitebeard.
Whitebeard choosing to save him rather than his Captain and then later defeating him could also explain why Croc has strong issues when it comes to trusting others :
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another hint that Croc is related to Rocks is Blackbeard. A popular theory/understanding in the fandom is that, while Luffy inherited Roger's Will, Blackbeard inherited Rocks' (leading to the idea that Rocks vs Garp & Roger will be paralleled with Blackbeard vs Luffy & Koby). This is especially interesting, considering that Blackbeard replaced Croc as a Warlord after he was defeated and sent to Impel Down, which is when they met :
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Crocodile also has a lot of "mannerisms" hinting he's a D. He's strongly interested in the Void Century, poneglyphs and the ancient weapons.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Additionally, upon learning during Marineford about Ace's and Luffy's being hunted by the Government because of their fathers, he intervened to protect them...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These acts, outside of the CrocoParent theory (see below), can be explained by Croc's own experience of being hunted because of who his father was, but also by what Ivankov said to Law, who's also a D :
Tumblr media
To conclude, I'm a strong advocate that Sir Crocodile is actually Rocks D. Crocodile and he obviously couldn't keep his father's name, in order to avoid being hunted during his entire life by the Government.
But what about the CrocoParent theory?
Tumblr media
Well, as much as I'm an immense and dedicated fan of this theory (full explanation here), a part of me doesn't trust Oda to be brave enough to go down that road, even if I'm also eagerly waiting for him to. :D
Whether Croc was afab or amab though, the theory that he's Rocks' kid still applies. The only difference is that, if Croc was afab, then on top of knowing about who his father was, Iva also helped Croc with transitioning, thanks to their devil fruit.
Of course, it's probably through meeting Iva that Croc then came to meet some members of the Revolutionary Army, like Dragon. He gave birth to Luffy, transitioned afterwards with Iva's help and his actions at Marineford (protecting both Ace and Luffy) are not only because he used to be hunted as Rocks' kid, but also because he just learnt that Luffy is Dragon's son and thus his own child. :))
After all, to quote Dragon in the latest chapter of Kuma's flashback...
Tumblr media
... "a child is their parents' weak spot" seems to ring to the same bell as Croc's "if you want to protect something, do it right" (like giving up on raising Luffy and leaving him in a remote village of East Blue, to avoid him being hunted by the World Government).
Anyway, long post, sorry about it! I hope we'll know soon about Croc's past. Let me know if I missed some hints ! :D

Garp, Fascism, and Parental Failure
Garp is truly one of the most interesting One Piece characters for me because of the extent to which his dogged, relentless devotion to a fascist system–and the supposed "order" it promises to uphold in the face of anarchy or rebellion–perseveres no matter how many times it fails him and his son and his grandsons. He's fully aware of the deep-seated corruption and atrocity, and feels some kind of moral obligation to bend its rules to protect the innocent (as we can see with his attempts to protect Rouge and Ace), but when faced with widespread femicide and infanticide, genocide, slavery and endless examples of egregious cruelty, he is unable to comprehend the notion that the system is indefensible, or that the only moral choice he can possibly make when faced with that level of atrocity is to leave and resist it. His son recognizing the inherent, inexcusable failures of the World Government and its armed enforcers–literally quitting the force to start a revolution– changes nothing. The order to slaughter pregnant people and infants at Baterilla can't convince him otherwise. The countless instances of bribery, the tolerance of atrocity from state-sanctioned privateers, everything about the history of the Valley of the Gods are all things he's aware of, and takes issue with, but never comes to the conclusion that he cannot affect positive change within a system designed for oppression. The public execution of his grandson–a prime example of the marine's fundamentally irrational, arrogant, vindictive cruelty clearly bound to blow up in all of their faces even before their Pyrrhic victory at the summit war–makes him waver, but even when confronted with this obvious, indefensible injustice against a child he raised and rescued by people seeking to murder him on live TV and desecrate his corpse as a show of power, he cannot bring himself to act against it in any meaningful way no matter how much it hurts him to leave his grandson to die. If he can't veto it, he'll stay Vice Admiral and suffer through Ace being sacrificed on the altar of fascist state control, and functionally leave Luffy for dead in the process while he's at it. He fails every single person he wanted to love–Ace, Luffy, and almost certainly Dragon–and allows himself to be reluctantly complicit in countless crimes against humanity again and again and again because he's so deeply steeped in this notion of preservation of order through state control that he convinces himself that even this disgusting, atrocious, fundamentally flawed and untenable excuse for a government is better than abolition, better than revolution, or just the act of expecting accountability or literally anything better from the systems that issue false promises to protect you. Dadan beating the living shit out of him and calling him a failure as a grandfather, as a self proclaimed defender of the people, is one of the most important scenes in the Postwar Arc because a lesser series might frame Garp as a tragic, helpless figure suffering more than anyone else due to conflict of love and duty, but One Piece refuses to whitewash his actions/inaction or allow the grief and suffering caused by systems he's complicit in to take precedence over its real victims: the D brothers.
There's so much I could say about statism and anarchism and the ways people have internalized the supposed necessity of state violence to the extent they can't oppose that violence even when it ruins them or their loved ones, but that horrible indoctrination and its devastating consequences for both him and his family are what makes Garp so fascinating to watch and so thematically/politically important to One Piece as a whole.
