I Walked With a Zombie (Jacques Tourneur, 1943) Cast: Frances Dee, Tom Conway, James Ellison, Edith Barrett, James Bell, Christine Gordon, Theresa Harris, Sir Lancelot, Darby Jones. Screenplay: Curt Siodmak, Ardel Wray, based on a story by Inez Wallace. Cinematography: J. Roy Hunt. Art direction: Albert S. D'Agostino, Walter E. Keller. Film editing: Mark Robson. Music: Roy Webb. I feel a little sorry for the viewer who watches I Walked With a Zombie expecting the lurid thrills of The Walking Dead or even the campy ones of Hammer horror films, and encounters instead a moody, dreamlike tale that borrows heavily from Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre. The tone of the film is set at the very beginning, when the narrator -- Frances Dee's Betsy Connell -- says in a subdued, almost matter-of-fact manner, "I walked with a zombie." The low key restraint of her narration pervades the film, which has an insidious way of working on your nerves without subjecting them to sudden shocks. I like, too, the way in which the crime of slavery works its way into the fabric of the story as a source of horror. The coachman driving Betsy to Fort Holland reminds her of "the enormous boat [that] brought the long ago fathers and the long ago mothers of us all, chained to the bottom of the boat." Betsy burbles out the white folks' familiar defense: "They brought you to a beautiful place, didn't they?" To which the coachman can only reply with a long-learned submissiveness, "If you say so, Miss. If you say so." Betsy hasn't yet learned the lesson Paul Holland (Tom Conway) tried to teach her on the ship that brought her there. As she looks out at the stars and the sea, he tells her, "Everything seems beautiful because you don't understand.... There's no beauty here, only death and decay." A shooting star streaks across the sky. "Everything good dies here," he says. "Even the stars." I Walked With a Zombie doesn't quite deliver on that premise, in part because it's too restrained and poetic in its storytelling, but it makes a good go at it.

Here's the first part of this post!

So we know the Jackal's identity! What now?

Hell yeah!

When Spidey wakes up, he gets beaten up pretty good by the Jackal, aka Peter's science professor.

Turns out dear Miles had... feelings of a certain kind for Gwen and wanted to avenge her. He's the one who hid the samples from Peter, naturally.

See, Gwen died because she slayed too hard.

The Jackal tells Spidey to come to the Shea Stadium later, which he does, and he promptly gets put unconscious ONCE AGAIN. When he wakes up...

While the girls are fighting, Gwen figures that the Jackal isn't very nice and tears his mask away. Warren proceeds to lose his mind and cut the rope holding Ned, thus removing the need for the real Spider-Man to prove himself. And what was destined to happen... happens.

One Spidey wakes up, the other doesn't. Alive!Spidey says Ned will live. But when Gwen asks him how he knows he's the real Spider-Man... he doesn't answer.

So this is where Peter most likely loses his virginity. Sex and death are often interlinked.

The first time I read this issue, it left a bitter taste in my mouth. I liked it, but it was a bizarre feeling. The part where Gwen leaves is still really bittersweet. I hope we get to see more of her eventually. I was spoiled on how she ends up, but still...

In the readers' letters, the team actually apologizes for the Mindworm's house depiction, as it truly exists IRL.

This is the last issue of the main Gerry Conway batch, although we'll see more of him in the next one with some GSSM issues. Overall, a strong run that really incorporated arc-plotlines in otherwise limited storylines.

In Ish 150 (wow), Spidey goes to Curt Connors to get help. While waiting for the results of their numerous tests, he gets attacked by the traditional crème de la crème of his foes (it is a celebration, after all) before Smythe shows himself and declares it was all his work, robots he made! Smythe is a boring villain because it always seems like the exact same thing with him, but oh well. On the verge of death, Spidey thinks about MJ, and figures that if he was the clone, he'd be torn between Gwen and MJ, and he gets enough motivation to overpower Smythe. When he comes back to an asleep Connors, he doesn't check the results--he simply throws them out. I don't think any of this makes a lick of sense, but oh well.

It also really doesn't matter.

Next time: Giant-Size Spider-Man 3-6!

I've seen it at least half a dozen time in my life, bits and pieces during Twilight Zone marathons. But I had never seen it fully start to finish and I haven't seen this story for at least 10 years or more. So I went to watch it in context with current events of the last four years.

Eerily prophetic. I don't think it's ever over as Rod Serling says in the narration:

"Where there's hate, where there's prejudice, where there's bigotry. He's alive. He's alive so long as these evils exist. Remember that when he comes to your town. Remember it when you hear his voice speaking out through others. Remember it when you hear a name called, a minority attacked, any blind, unreasoning assault on a people or any human being. He's alive because, through these things, we keep him alive."

Cautionary tales never end. There's always going to be that danger in the future.

Hud - Modern Day Western Character Study

Probably saw for the first time on the American Movie Classics channel back in the 80s, and it's one of those that pops up on cable about once a year somewhere, so I've also lost track of how many times I've sat through it. Newman is a complicated character, a total amoral cad, yet there is something magnetic about him that doesn't allow you to totally hate him. Patricia Neal and him make a very electric pair in this one, and Melvyn Douglas and the always annoying Brandon de Wilde round out this great cast. Beautifully and bleakly photographed, and the widescreen is given good use, with the wide Texas landscapes, the long cars and emphasizing the moral gaps that grow between the characters.
