📚 Books

What If I Had Never Tried It [English/Italian/Spanish/German/Japanese/Chinese, etc.]: Vale’s only autobiography to date, translated into a lot of languages (so many that it’s hard to keep count). The English edition is notoriously rough - think spelling mistakes and some lost-in-translation moments. Despite this, yellow fans absolutely shouldn’t miss out on this gem. Published in 2006, during Vale’s zenith with five consecutive championships under his belt, the book radiates his happiness and confidence. The narrative is casual, with chapters loosely connected, but you will still find pleasure in reading this book.

MotoGenius: the Valentino Rossi biography by Mat Oxley: Oxley remains my all-time favorite Rossi author! Initially published years ago, the latest edition is available on Kindle. It’s a treasure trove of Vale anecdotes and Oxley’s unique insights, offering a glimpse into how Vale captivated his generation.

The Valentino Rossi Files: Everything I’ve ever written about VR by Mat Oxley: Available on Kindle, this collection (in two parts) encapsulates all the articles Oxley wrote about Vale for magazines and newspapers before joining Motor Sport Magazine.

Valentino Rossi: The Definitive Biography by Stuart Barker: A comprehensive biography of Vale, chronologically organized.

Valentino Rossi: Il Dio del Motociclismo by Fabio Fagnani [Italian]: Not recommended as the author’s fan-like admiration making it read more like a love letter than a biography. The only saving grace is the interview with Aldo Drudi.

Valentino Rossi: All His Races by Mat Oxley [English/German/Japanese/Serbian]: Chronicles every race of Vale’s career, enriched with exclusive interviews.

When asked about a movie about himself, Vale said, “If it’s a bad movie, I’d rather it didn’t exist.” He holds a similarly cautious stance towards documentaries, and has never personally produced a documentary about himself, though perhaps that might change at some point in the future.

Faster (2003) : Premiered at the Festival de Cannes during MotoGP’s golden era, this documentary intriguingly portrays the rivalry between Vale and Max Biaggi.

The Doctor, the Tornado, and the Kentucky Kid (2006) : Focuses on the 2005 season, especially the US Grand Prix, you can see the beautiful yellow livery of Yamaha’s 50th anniversary.

Fastest (2011) : A sequel to Faster.

Hitting the Apex (2015) : Arguably the best MotoGP documentary out there. Vale and Marco riding into the sunset to ‘Wish you were here’ is a poignant moment.

Valentino Rossi: The Doctor (2016) : Produced by Monster Energy, primarily illustrating how Vale expanded his empire step by step.

Racing Together (2017): MotoGP history isn’t complete without its greatest icon, Vale features for about 15 minutes.

Valentino’s Secret Room: Inside the Doctor’s Hidden Archive (2020) : Produced by Dainese, revealing Vale’s personal collection.

Ruta 46 – Ruta 93: El camino de dos mitos (2021) : Produced by DAZN España, unfortunately I haven’t seen it yet – if you have, let me know how it tells the tale.

Tales of Valentino (2021) : A nine-episode documentary series produced by Dorna, showcasing different aspects of Vale’s career through nine significant races.

Sir Lewis Hamiltion has a dog, his dog is the goodest boy in the world, and I know too much about his dog so now you must suffer with this knowledge as well enjoy:

Lewis adopted Roscoe, a English bulldog, from an online adoption agency in 2013.Roscoe is a purebred bulldog with both his mom and dad being show dogs. Roscoe's name was chosen because Lewis thought it but Crofty calling Nico ‘Roscoe’ at the 2016 Chinese Grand Prix makes me have my doubts. Lewis later adopted Coco, a female bulldog. Coco’s breeder was originally going to put her down due to how expensive her health conditions, mostly likely a heart condition, were but Lewis stepped in. If you are trying to tell Coco and Roscoe apart in photos, Coco has a wider white stripe on her head. It is widest around the top of her head. Roscoe has more wrinkles and a brown spot on his snout and his strip ends at the top of his head and a new one starts off center in the back of his head. Coco’s fang teeth are also out more often compared to Roscoe's little teeth and she is a lighter color than Roscoe. Lewis expressed that he adopted the dog because his family has always had dogs, mostly labradors, but he said he always wanted an English bulldog. Coco lived till June 2020 when she passed in the night. Lewis and Roscoe were with her. His mom has five dogs! Both Roscoe and Coco have passports so they can travel with Lewis. Lewis was also granted special permission from Bernie Ecclestone to bring the dogs to the padlock (I assume Charles will ask Domenicali to bring Leo to the Padlock).

Lewis brought a jet to fly with the dogs which he then sold in 2019. Roscoe is good with traveling due to his love of napping. In his first trip with Lewis he slept through most of the flight waking up to go to the bathroom and to make Lewis put him in his lap. Lewis followed Roscoe's command, sleeping with Roscoe in his lap like “a baby.” Lewis said, “Roscoe is the best travel pet, he just sleeps with you.” As Roscoe is getting older, Lewis has made the decision to travel less with him, as the time zones were getting hard on him. While Lewis is racing, Roscoe stays in Los Angeles, California with dog trainer Kirstin McMillan (adventuresindogtraining on instagram). Lewis says he gets pictures of Roscoe everyday and checks in on him. Roscoe also attends a dog park or “Los Angeles' first canine social club” as stated on their website called ‘Dog PPL’ in Santa Monica. It is about $120 a month for one dog.

Not only is Roscoe Lewis’s son but also his best friend. Lewis talked about his instant connection when they first met. Roscoe gets sad when Lewis leaves and happy when he returns. Lewis says, “Then I get the Frisbee and play with him, and that’s, for me, the biggest highlight – the unconditional love you get from a pet like that.” Roscoe loves quad bikes. In one interview, Lewis said it’s because he’s lazy so he likes being driven around. However, I think it’s because he has taken after his dad and wants to race. Roscoe also loves frisbee and his ball; it seems like he enjoys fetching and chasing after things, like chasing other cars down… Roscoe WDC 2024 confirmed. Lewis also has Roscoe involved in many of his projects, Lewis has hinted that Roscoe has a cameo in ‘Apex’, his movie starring Brad Pitt. When Fortnite asked him to be in the game he said he would only agree if Roscoe was in the game with him. Fortnite, of course, agreed because Roscoe is an angel. They ended up putting him in a jet pack. He was 1,500 V-Bucks or 2,400 V-Bucks with the ‘Lewis Hamilton Budle’ (IDK if thats a lot I don’t play Fortnite). Lewis also said Roscoe is the only person he can count on to stand with him along with Bono.

After Coco’s death, Lewis took Roscoe to the vet where they recommended starting him on a vegan diet similar to what Lewis has. This vegan diet is often recommended to bulldogs because they often have food intolerances or allergies to the meat proteins that can affect the skin and gastrointestinal tract. The vegan diet Roscoe is on still includes the same things without the meat proteins in it that caused him to have health issues. Lewis has said his breathing has improved and that he no longer has skin allergies. Roscoe also has physical therapy and acupuncture every week to help with his joints. Roscoe has also had health issues that caused him to ejaculate, often uncontrollably, scaring baby Roscoe and leading to him getting snipped in 2016. Lewis did have his sperm frozen so that Roscoe could have puppies. Lewis said, “It’s great his genes will live on.” Lewis said his plans were to have Roscoe’s puppies after he retires but with the fanzone in 2024 Australia GP, it sounds to me like he may be looking sooner to have Roscoe’s pups or to retire. Last year, around the British GP, Roscoe had some issues regarding his spine. If I remember correctly, it involved a slipped hernia in his spine. Luckily, he got stem therapy and was able to attend the GP. He has been improving, and as of today he is back to normal.

Now for the part most people know about. Roscoe started his instagram account, roscoelovescoco, in January 2015 with a post featuring Coco and him captioned “Thanks for following us :).” The instagram account was originally a joint account with both Coco and Roscoe until 2020, although both did get solo posts. As expected Roscoe does make money off his Instagram, but he is also a dog model. Lewis said in a Silver Arrows interview in 2021 that he gets paid $700 a day which goes in Roscoe's treat fund. Roscoe also has sponsorships. His Thanksgiving party was sponsored by Bramble Pets, and he did content (including a commercial) for Zapp, a food delivery company Lewis invested in. Roscoe also appears in Lewis' vlog channel (it hasn’t been updated since 2021) multiple times. His last appearance is in a video “Adventures with Roscoe! | Lewis Hamilton Vlogs” which is also the last updated video on Lewis channel. He reached 1 million followers in 2024, which is more than Chouprette Lagerfield, the cat of Karl Lagerfeld (I am not joking, this man left a good chunk of his fortune [~$300 million] to his cat). Roscoe’s captions on his instagram posts were originally typed in a sort of third person first person mix but in October 2020, Roscoe finally established his first first person post with his famous lisp. However, the conspiracy expands as prior to this first lisp post, there are two posts on instagram where Roscoe (and Coco) are talking to us. The first one was posted April 2024 with Roscoe saying, ‘They put a thermometer up me bum, dad!’ In this speech bubble, Roscoe doesn’t have a lisp but does speak in a sort of baby talk. The next post in October 2017 features both Roscoe and Coco with Roscoe saying, “We got acupuncture today Dad!” and Coco saying, “It’s my favorite.” (More info about the dogs getting acupuncture is in the health section.) I will note his lisp comes and goes on his posts around November 2020. His lisp finally stays and its intensity does increase. There are also a few posts taken with Mercedes that don’t feature the lisp, and a few posts talking about Roscoe or Coco written in their “Dad’s” pov where it obviously doesn’t use a lisp.

On This Day in F1: March 24th

Present: Australian Grand Prix

History: 2013 Malaysian Grand Prix

On March 24th, 2024, the Australian Grand Prix occurred. After last years Aus GP, most people expected craziness and the Williams lack of third chassis had delivered some of that craziness.

However the main story was Max Verstappen having his first retirement since the 2022 Australian Grand Prix - marking his 43 race streak and preventing him from matching his 10 win streak. Carlos Sainz overtook Verstappen as his car was failing and held the lead for the rest of the race with Charles Leclerc coming in second for a Ferrari 1-2 and Lando Norris on the last step of the podium.

The other big race retirement was Lewis Hamilton due to his engine giving out. Then there were the extremely long Sauber pit stops which gave us a lesser version of the 2020 Ham-Ver-Bot (or any other variation of it) podiums.

And on the last lap, George Russell crashed which was honestly terrifying to see because he was in the middle of the track and the car was on its side. Luckily, Lance Stroll was far back enough that he could be told about Russell in the middle of the track and to take precautions to avoid Russell.

Eleven years ago, Formula One was racing in Malaysia. Most people remember Malaysia for the Red Bull drama with Multi-21. This makes sense because it is a very memorable moment in time and we got the iconic "I was racing, I was faster, I passed him, I won," quote from Sebastian Vettel when he was asked about overtaking his teammate despite being told to not overtake.

(sidenote: Seb's words were true then and they remain true now. You're racing, if you're faster then pass him and win the race. There is a place for team orders, but in at least half of the cases where drivers ask about team orders now, they are not necessary if you're the faster driver. Just pass your teammate.)

While the drama about team orders and Multi-21 was going on at Red Bull, Lewis Hamilton drove into the wrong pit box. It was Hamilton's first season with Mercedes after 6 years with McLaren F1 and a total of 13 years with McLaren.

Both McLaren and Mercedes were prepared for their drivers to pull into the pit box, but McLaren was not expecting their previous driver to stop there. However, Hamilton was able to quickly leave the pit box and go to the Mercedes pit box which luckily was after the McLaren pit box, not before.

Hamilton did end up finishing 3rd in the race and apologized for the gaffe. Jokingly, he said, "I did a Jenson (Button). He did that a couple of years ago, but big apologies to the team." Referring to Jenson Button at the 2011 Chinese GP where he pulled into the Red Bull pit box instead of the McLaren pit box.

Taylor Swift, A Deep Dive into the Singer's Challenges

Amidst the unplanned four-week break in the F1 season due to the cancellation of the Chinese Grand Prix, a surprising rumour surfaced online. It was about the 41-year-old Formula One driver, Fernando Alonso, and pop sensation Taylor Swift dating each other. The Spaniard did nothing to quash the speculations, and even his fellow drivers and celebrities started to comment on the news. McLaren’s Lando Norris joked about seeing Australian actress Margot Robbie, while even a NASCAR star was asked for his views. Amidst the unplanned four-week break in the F1 season due to the cancellation of the Chinese Grand Prix, a surprising rumour surfaced online. From re-recording her old music to battling against her former record label and the media, the singer has been fighting hard to maintain control over her own career and reputation. In 2019, Swift's former record label, Big Machine, sold her entire back catalog to music executive Scooter Braun's company, Ithaca Holdings. Swift spoke out against the deal, claiming she was never given a fair chance to own her own music and that Braun had been bullying her for years. This led to a public feud between the two, with many of Swift's fans taking her side and supporting her call for artists to own their own work. Since then, Swift has been re-recording her old music in an effort to regain control over her work. She released her first re-recorded album, "Fearless (Taylor's Version)," in April 2021, and plans to re-record all of her old albums. This has been a massive undertaking for the singer, but one that is important to her as an artist. In addition to her music struggles, Swift has also been battling against the media. In a 2019 interview with the Guardian, Swift spoke out against the constant scrutiny she faced as a young female artist, and how she was often portrayed in the media. She explained that she had been painted as a "boy-crazy, jealous, psycho, manic-depressive Cinderella" and that it had taken a toll on her mental health. Swift's struggles have also extended to her personal life. In 2016, the singer went through a very public breakup with actor Tom Hiddleston, which was followed by a feud with reality TV star Kim Kardashian and her husband, rapper Kanye West. Swift has been very open about how these events affected her mental health and how she has had to work hard to overcome them. Despite all of these struggles, Swift has continued to release music and remain one of the biggest names in the music industry. In 2020, she released two new albums, "folklore" and "evermore," both of which received critical acclaim and commercial success. She also made history by becoming the first woman to win Album of the Year three times at the Grammy Awards. Swift's recent struggles have highlighted the difficulties that many artists face in the entertainment industry. The Legacy of Michael Schumacher in Formula One

When a young German driver made his Formula One debut at the Belgium Grand Prix in 1991 as a replacement driver for the Irish Jordan-Ford team, little did the paddock around him know the lasting impact that he would have on the sport. When he made his debut in the sport which he would eventually become synonymous with, Michael Schumacher was a relatively unknown driver but he made himself known quickly by qualifying seventh, already matching the team's second highest qualifying performance of the season. Schumacher was then quickly signed by Benetton for the rest of the 1991 season and he would win his first and second drivers' titles consecutively in 1994 and 1995 with the team, before moving to a struggling Ferrari team and returning them to the glory days they had dreamed of since the '70's, when he achieved the momentous five in a row and become the first seven time world champion.

Thirty years on from Schumacher's debut, Max Verstappen has become the first World Champion not to have raced against the great German driver since Niki Lauda.

Lauda, won his third and final World Championship in 1984 and retired from racing in F1 in 1985, was followed by Alan Prost (who won the championship in 1985, 1986 & 1989, and then again in 1993), Nelson Piquet (who won his third and final title in 1987), Aryton Senna (the legendary Brazilian won his three world titles in 1988, 1990 & 1991, respectively), Nigel Mansell (who won his world title in 1992), Damon Hill (who clenched the title in 1996), Jacques Villeneuve (the World Champion of 1997), Mika Häkkinen (who won his two world titles in 1998 & 1999), Fernando Alonso (who claimed the title in 2005 & 2006, respectively), Kimi Räikkönen (who, in 2007, became the first - and so far the only - Ferrari driver since Michael himself to claim the title), Lewis Hamilton (the only other driver to achieve seven world titles, winning in 2008, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019 & 2020, respectively), Jensen Button (who achieved the title in 2009), Sebastian Vettel (who became the youngest World Champion when he first won in 2010, he therefore is also the youngest driver to achieve four world championships in row as he also won the title again in 2011, 2012 & 2013, respectively) & Nico Rosberg (who achieved his championship in 2016) who all raced against Michael Schumacher at least once during his years in F1 (between 1991 & 2006 and then from 2010 to 2012).

Max's win makes him the first Dutch driver to get his hands on the trophy but the Dutchman's wins is reflective of something more. We are at the dawn of a new era in Formula One. A new generation of drivers are coming to the forefront of the sport, drivers like Alex Albon (who's rejoining the grid with Williams after a year's absence), Pierre Gasly (Alpha Tauri), Charles Leclerc (Ferrari), Lando Norris (Maclaren), Esteban Ocon (Alpine), George Russell (who's moving from Williams to Mercedes in the new year), Yuki Tsunoda (Alpha Tauri) & Guanyu Zhou (who is making his Formula One debut at Alfa Romeo in the new year and is also the first Chinese driver in Formula One's history). Majority of these drivers grew up competing with each other in karting, formula 3, formula 2, etc, and most importantly were all inspired by the legendary German driver.

It's mad to think that 37 years worth of champions all raced with Michael but it's also mad to think the first driver not to have raced against Michael in Formula One has photos like these with the - arguably - greatest formula 1 driver of all time:

There's interviews with Michael & Max's father from the early 2000's where they talk about their kids & if they could see them in f1 (in one such interview, Michael jokes that they have never had any sort of argument in their friendship but this could be the first if "our two" would be racing each other & Jos remarked that they're similar ages (Max is only 2 years older than Mick) so they would probably compete against each other if they decide to go into racing as they grow up, which they've both have now. It's fitting perhaps, that this year, the year Max has become World Champion, Mick is on the grid beside him. In the same interview, Michael added laughing that he thinks horse riding is a much better sport for their kids, which his oldest child Gina does now almost 20 years later.

Some may claim this is the passing of the torch, but I will always argue that Michael already passed the torch in his final race, to his friend and fellow German driver Sebastian Vettel. While Vettel had already clenched the decisive grid position to guarantee he'd have the points to become a world champion once again, Schumacher allowed Vettel to overtake him without any defense and simply waved him through, essentially changing the guard, passing the torch from era of drivers to the next. While Sebastian's story is still being written to this day, Michael's time in F1 drew to a close as he watched the kingdom lights shine on his friend, who he had known as a child, become not only a four time world champion but the youngest four time champion in history. Drivers like Prost, Piquet, Mansell and the legendary Senna, are all connected to Sebastian - and thus the rest of his era and those who followed them into the sport - by Michael. The torch still burns bright.

This is, however, a poignant moment to reflect. Michael remains the only driver to achieve five championships in a row (Juan Manuel Fangio being the only other driver to achieve five world championships, outside of the two seven time world champions; Hamilton & Schumacher), a record he retains for the foreseeable future. He also still holds the record of most fastest laps (77) and still shares the record of seven World titles with Lewis Hamilton. Hamilton, Vettel and Alonso are all signed for at least another year in Formula One and can/will contend for future world titles but the door has been opened for the younger drivers to breakthrough. Today belongs to Max, those young drivers and the legacy of one German driver who debuted thirty years ago.

Said German driver's greatest legacy is still being written. His son has been unanimously praised during his rookie season in the sport, his hard work and dedication reminiscent of his father's. Little did he know when he was giving that interview that his son would follow in his footsteps or that his friend's son would be the first world champion in 37 years not to have raced against him but perhaps it was clear to him even then that his greatest legacy would be firmly written by his son and daughter.

okay first some background knowledge:

Nico is rich as fuck. only child, born in Germany, brought up in Monaco. son of world champion Keke Rosberg

Lewis was born on a council estate in Stevenage and his dad had to work multiple jobs for him to start karting

Honestly I think the difference in their backgrounds is one of the things that pushed them together, they were both isolated from the rest of the kids, but I’m keeping this purely facts rather than speculation.

2000

They’re both 15 years old and are karting teammates for MBB (Mercedes Benz McLaren) in Formula A

Robert Kubica: “there was always competition. But they didn’t fight. It was friendly competition. There was always laughing afterwards.” // “they would even have races to eat pizza”

They often shared hotel rooms at the races which was a “scene of many wrestling matches between them”

Dino Chiesa (their karting boss) – “many times I was called by reception about some problem in the room. It might be noise, or they might have broken something. They would never sleep so they were always tired the next morning”

“they both liked ice cream so much, particularly vanilla. During the night they wanted to eat ice cream always, so I had to go out everywhere to find some and keep them happy”

Lewis would often persuade Nico to buy him sweets

They would have competitions over LITERALLY EVERYTHING

Lewis: “we always had great competition whether on the racetrack or computer games or playing football”

“probably the first bit of competition we had was when Nico used to ride a unicycle everywhere so I thought, ‘I’ve got to learn how to ride this unicycle. Ive got to be better than him.’ I spent all my time outside the go-kart learning to ride this unicycle”

Apparently it only took Lewis 2 hours to teach himself how to do it

In maybe 2013 ish (when they were still friends) Lewis reflected with– “I have never laughed so much than when we were racing together. Nico was kicking everyone’s butt at that time. We had so great races together and built a great relationship”

many times they would talk about what they would do when they got to f1, made plans hoping to be teammates and become world champions together.

“Nico would say ‘when I’m in formula one’ and for me it was always ‘if I ever get to formula one’. Because obviously Nico’s dad was a formula 1 driver- he knew he was going to make it.”

Nico joined f1 in 2006 with williams, Lewis 2007 with McLaren. And man I WISH I knew what went down with this two when Lewis nearly one his rookie season (missing out by one point to mr fernando alonso) and then WON THE CHAMPIONSHIP in his SECOND SEASON (again by one point thank you mr alonso)

2008 Australia

Nicos gets his first podium, and ofc Lewis is there (he won it) and they are jumping around in the cool down room. Just, two kids who are literally living the one thing they have spent their whole lives dreaming about together. Lewis won the championship that year and oh wow I can only imagine their celebrations together.

2013

They’re teammates in Mercedes!!!

Nico: “every other day there are moments or things that pop up and I can smirk and thing, ‘that’s exactly the same as it was 15 years ago’”

2013 Malaysian Grand Prix gets an honourable mention. This is the race with red bulls good old multi 21 but merc also had their own team orders, stopping nico from fighting for his first merc podium, but Lewis disagreed with it so it didn’t really spark that much tension between them- more the team.

2014

the start of the turbo-hybrid era so y’all know this was good in terms of performance.

2014 Bahrain Grand Prix

They were both fighting for the win and had a collision which prompted a “mock fight” in parc ferme after the race (which I really hope there’s a video of).

Turns out, Nico won because he had used engine modes banned by Mercedes to get a power advantage in the closing laps. which kinda pissed Lewis off

2014 Spanish Grand Prix

Lewis’ fourth win in a row and took lead in the championship. They were fighting till literally the last second and Lewis crossed the line 0.6 seconds ahead of Nico, who says he could have passed him with one more lap.

Lewis defended using the same banned engine modes that Nico had used in Bahrain. Yeah.

2014 Monaco Grand Prix

This is IT. This is peak petty bitch. This is the one people still cry about.

It’s the end of Q3, both of them are out on a lap, Nico ahead of lewis. Nico’s already on provisional pole but Lewis is pretty close.

And then,, Nico just,, parks his car?? He says he made a mistake but the guy doesn’t even crash he straight up just,, rolls to a stop into a slip road. So the yellow flags come out forcing Lewis to abort a lap that was in the makings of pole.

The stewards say it was a-okay but Lewis was convinced it was intentional (and let’s be honest, yeah it probably was) and he even claimed that merc’s data proved it. (low key surprised he didn’t just tweet out the telemetry but I guess he got a stern telling off from mclaren last time)

But *this* is when Lewis tells the world that they aren’t friends anymore. An iconic interview.

Nico then wins the race too, ending Lewis’s four win streak and putting Nico in the lead of the championship.

2014 Hungarian Grand Prix

Lewis has an engine failure in quali meaning he starts from the pit lane, but he does good to make his way up the pack but THEN there’s a safety car which puts him ahead of Nico but on a different strategy.

Nico asks if Lewis can let him past as he needs to pit again before the end of the race, which will give him the place back anyways. Lewis straight up refuses, he’s on a role here. He started from last, and Nico started from pole, why should he slow down to let his title rival through.

Mercedes strongly suggest that his blocking fucked up Nicos race but Niki Lauda is on Lewis’ side so he doesn’t get punished (We stan a supportive father figure) even though he did blatantly refuse to be a team player.

And guys, this is the last race before the summer break so you know Nico was left seething for four weeks.

2014 Belgian Grand Prix

Second lap, Nico attempts a clumsy move and there’s contact, giving Hamilton a puncture and knocking him out of the race.

There’s a lot of controversy but basically it turns out he crashed with him intentionally, not backing out of the corner to “prove a point”. Nico ended up finishing second but was punished by the team, forced to apologise, and even booed on the podium.

2014 Abu Dhabi

For some reason it ran for double points?? The first time in History??? But idk???

Lewis had a perfect start and went on to win it and take the title, Nico had a problem and was told to retire the car but he kept going anyway and finished 14th. Nico went into the cool down room to congratulate Lewis on the championship win, which. cute.

Lewis claimed his second championship. Which not only was huge because of the inter team rivalry, but also because of the large gap between his first win. This guy had lost out on winning the championship in his ROOKIE season by ONE POINT, and then WON it in his SECOND season, and then there was like a FIVE YEAR gap before he won it again.

2015

Damnnn this car was fiiiinneeeeeee.

They do more laps in testing than any other car AND do it on a single power unit. And then. Australia. They take a one-two THIRTY FOUR seconds ahead of the third place Ferrari.

2015 Chinese Grand Prix

Nico is second in a one-two but claims that Lewis kept backing him up into Seb, trying to compromise his race (and help out his boyfriend).

Lewis gave zero shits: "It's not my job to look after Nico's race, it's my job to manage the car and bring the car home as healthy and as fast as possible. That's what I did."

2015 U.S. Grand Prix

If Lewis wins here he could also claim the title with three races to spare (you have to remember back then the title fight often went up to the last race so this was pretty cool)

Lewis very aggressively forced Rosberg wide at Turn 1 to claim the lead, and then there was some sexy fighting between the Mercs and Redbull all race. Nico led in the closing stages but made a mistake, running deep into a corner and letting Lewis past with only a handful of laps to go.

Nico finished P2 and had not only lost the race but the championship title. Nico was fuming, saying Lewis’ move at the start was “one step too far”.

This is the infamous cap throw in the cool down room. Lewis throws Nico his P2 hat, Nico straight up yeets it back at him. I tear up just thinking about it. They grow up so fast.

2016

Nico had came so close to winning and I guess this was just, the last straw. All or nothing. This year he literally gave it everything he had. Lewis and him stopped speaking, Nico gave up literally the rest of his life and even stopped sleeping in the same bed as his wife and taking care of his kids, instead spending every moment trying to get into Lewis’ head. Honestly, I think he might be the only one that could beat Lewis. Just because he knew him *so well*. He literally threw away like 16 years of friendship. But also it’s like, he had to be world champion. He *had to*. His dad was champion and his whole life he’s been preparing to win it too. Tough luck that he raced in the same era as Mr. Best Driver The Sport Has Ever Seen.

Nico won the last few races of 2015, and the first four races of 2016. Lewis had a couple car problems and Nico had a good lead on him in the championship.

2016 Spanish Grand Prix

Gentlemen. A short view back to the past. Nico had made a switch error on the formation lap causing the car to go into the wrong engine mode. So he was running a lot slower than Lewis, who was fighting to claim back the lead.

Nico closed the door to keep him back, and Lewis lost control on the grass, and spins into Nico and taking them both out of the race in the first lap. This is probably one of the most iconic crashes. I’m pretty sure there’s a clip of this somewhere in black and white with the titanic music over the top.

Niki Lauda blamed this one on Lewis (I guess even a supportive dad has to be critical sometimes) "Lewis is too aggressive. It is stupid, we could've won this race".

2016 Austrian Grand Prix

Nico had been struggling with a brake issue all race but was still on the way to win it. But in the last lap Lewis had caught him up and gone in for the overtake.

Typical Nico not taking any shit, refusing to be the guy that backs out and they collide. Lewis took the win and a damaged Nico dropped to fourth. From first. In the last lap.

Both of them blamed each other and tired dad team boss Toto Wolff threatened team orders in future races.

The stewards blamed Nico for the incident, issuing him two penalty points for failing to allow "racing room" and causing a collision.

2016 Abu Dhabi

In the final laps of the race, Lewis ignored team-orders from his race engineer and the technical director.

He deliberately slowed and backed Nico into the pack hoping they overtake him, and there would be enough of a points difference to win the title.

Nico finished second and won the title by five points.

And then,,, Nico announced a surprise retirement during the FIA prize giving ceremony.

Lewis’ response:

"This is the first time he's won in 18 years, hence why it was not a surprise that he decided to stop.” (We stan a petty king)

“But he's also got a family to focus on and probably wants to have more children. Formula One takes up so much of your time."

“In terms of missing the rivalry, of course because we started karting when we were 13 and we would always talk about being champions. When I joined this team, Nico was there, which was something we spoke about when we were kids. So it's going to be very, very strange, and, for sure, it will be sad to not have him in the team next year."

And now they are kind of on speaking terms but not really, they are both pretty private but I think they are at the ‘awkward small talk when we run into each other at the supermarket’ stage of the break up.
