Chubby Checker's hit single exemplified the early 60's. While there was a sense of pushing the envelope further, a lot of people went along with that. Of course, those who were buying had this power, yet we mustn't forget that somehow many things got aligned perfectly. I mean, The Drifters had many successes during the early 60's with the tune in the link being one of them. They kept refining their formula, until they reached their apex on the song I posted. Mind you, I also did the latter thanks to me continuing to be baffled by the piece, since there is an incredible mixture of moods present, a certain part of the composition becomes quite scary. Why did they intend to do such an emotion? Were they expressing the volatility of love?

DRIFTER CHARLIE THOMAS DIES AT 85: The Drifters’ Charlie Thomas died Jan. 31 at 85 from liver cancer.

Known for such songs as “There Goes My Baby” and “Sweets for My Sweet," the Drifters were 1988 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame indictees.

“Charlie Thomas’ elegant tenor vocals helped bridge gospel with R&B and blues and laid the foundation for 1960s soul music,” the hall said in a Feb. 7 statement.

SPRINGSTEEN FAN ’ZINE TO CEASE PUBLICATION: Backstreets, the Bruce Springsteen fan ’zine, is ceasing publication after 43 years of chronicling E Street happenings.

Publisher Christopher Phillips cited the bad taste left by the “dynamic pricing” scheme for Springsteen’s latest tour as factoring into the decision.

“As difficult as it is to call this the end, it's even harder to imagine continuing without my whole heart in it,” he wrote.

“If you read the editorial Backstreets published last summer in the aftermath of the U.S. ticket sales, you have a sense of where our heads and hearts have been: dispirited, downhearted and, yes, disillusioned. It’s not a feeling we’re at all accustomed to while anticipating a new Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band tour.”

NEW DUMMIES: Crash Test Dummies will release “Sacred Alphabet,” their first new song in … forever, March 10.

“Brad (Roberts) has penned a stunner, folks,” the band said. “We can’t wait for you to hear it.”

TWEEDY WITHIN A SONG: Jeff Tweedy’s latest book, “World Within a Song: Music that Changed My Life and Life that Changed My Music,” is out Nov. 7.

“I’ll be telling stories from my life, focusing on a true-to-memory style of how it really felt to me, how I experienced things emotionally,” Tweedy said in a statement.

“And then, I want to talk about music in the same way. I want to talk about music in a way that it rarely gets talked about.”

Remember Charlie Thomas 1937-2023

Charlie Thomas one of the members of the singers in soul doo wop group The Drifters has died at 85. He was in the group from 1958-67 and re-joined from 1988-his death. They had a string of classics including “This Magic Moment”, “Save the Last Dance for Me”, “Up on the Roof”, “On Broadway”, and “Under the Boardwalk”. The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.
