✍️ NEW BLOG POST! ✍️
As we’ve been working our way through The Running Grave week by week, we’ve noticed that it can sometimes be a bit tricky to keep track of the huge cast of characters who lived at Chapman Farm over the decades—and we’ve heard from our listeners that many of you have the same problem!
So, we decided to put together a timeline of every important character who resided at Chapman Farm (or Forgeman Farm, as it was previously known) in the time span relevant to The Running Grave. The infographic below shows the complete timeline: who was at Chapman Farm, when, and for how long, as well as the important events that occurred there.
We hope you enjoy - big shoutout to Pools for putting this together!

Strike Walk #4
All around Barrow-in-Furness
Career of Evil chapters 24-27
This is Part Five, there's a link to earlier parts at the end.
Although they can see her through the glass door of The Bakery, Strike and Robin decide not to try to speak to Holly Brockbank at her place of work, but to try and catch her later at the pub. Strike mourns the pie he could have bought was it not for Labor Omnia Vincit, but I'm on holiday so I had a nice chat with the owner in her new premises and bought a meat and potato.
Tumblr media
Strike follows Holly while Robin drives to a deserted stretch of road by a marshy wasteland (take your pick) changes out of her jeans and acquires some fake business cards at an unspecified shopping centre.
Tumblr media
They meet at The Crow's Nest - "a large, drum-shaped building of red brick" which stands "where Ferry and Stanley Roads met and formed a hairpin bend".
Tumblr media
Robin goes in as Venetia Hall and, as we know, aces it. I was a bit nervous of going in because it looked like a locals place, but it was the nicest pub and the best pint of lager I have had in years. If you're on your own take some cash though because there's a minumum spend on a card. I had to buy two packets of crisps and a Starbar.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After the triumph Strike and Robin celebrate with fish and chips from the Olympic Takeaway, eaten in the Landy. The Olympic's "bright windows intensified the surrounding darkness."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After being serenaded by old Barrovians (no-one serenaded me, sadly) they check into the Travelodge, where they are placed upstairs, five rooms apart.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Robin, unsettled and self-conscious, opens her window, and notes that the view is of the same industrial warehouses they passed at the start of their visit. I don't know how she'd see that in the dark - I had to wait until the morning after to see anything.
Tumblr media
Footnote: there's no restaurant at the Barrow-in-Furness Travelodge, so Strike can't have filched pastries and Robin can't have filled their flask from the urn in the morning. Personally I feel they shouldn't give planning permission to budget hotels with no breakfast buffet. 😁
That's the end of Strike Walk #4, thanks for reading!

I really like the Cormoran Strike DETECTIVE series. I started reading the books at CAREER OF EVIL, thinking it was a DETECTIVE series. I went back and read the earlier books and joined groups to discuss STRIKE among like-minded people. To my horror: most other people had started at book one and bc "R was there from the beginning" [and they have the brains of 12 year olds] were treating the series like a romance with a bit of detective stuff instead of the other way round 🤦‍♀️
And despite all her BS interviews where JKR said just wanting....to have it be about the writing [maybe she did] I think she MEANT it to be a romance, disguised as a detective story, the whole time. Especially after ploughing through 🖤. The fandom in 🖤 is so similar to Tom Burke and STRIKE fandom. Not as viciously harmful but just as toxic. Twatter is JKR favourite platform. Her worst fans are there. All the rest of the fandom promote the romance. If you go against the narrative, you are vilified. I'll finish 🖤 and try the next one. But I've been sold a pup. The books evolve, sure. But I was sold a dodgy bill of goods, from the outset. I thought I was getting a detective series with 2 good friends. Not a romance whose tedium I would have to navigate between cases. And a junior partner [with a genuine knack for the work] that has gone from temp to making life threatening and agency threatening decisions in such a short period of time. Especially given her actual life experiences are abysmally lacking for someone her age. Plus, she is taking over a lot of Cs' actual work in the TV adaptations. 🤦‍♀️

I spent the last couple of weeks *obsessed* with Strike after discovering it on HBO Max. Just finished watching the fifth series, so now I’m going to give the books a try while I wait for series 6 to be made. I hope they scratch the itch!

Days 1 - 10 of editing teddy bears into Cormoran Strike screencaps until news about Troubled Blood comes out.
Was reminiscing about a time I edited a teddy bear into a few screencaps + made a cover for a fan fic, have accidentally turned it into a full blown series that I've managed to stay on top of.
Will be sharing them in chunks of ten here so I don't overwhelm the tag <3

PETITION: BRING THE TRENCH COAT BACK, BBC!!!
Tumblr media
We don't know where it went nor why (specially since in the BBC's Cuckoo's Calling Robin wraps Strike's wound not with her coat, like in the book, but with her scarf) BUT WE WANT THIS BEAUTIFUL COAT BACK.

I notice trolls are letting loose on another blog of mine. They don't like the fact that I dare to actually say something less than praiseworthy about C.B. STRIKE books. That makes me a "traitor" who doesn't "really like STRIKE at all". Yeah, that makes sense. 🤦‍♀️ I don't always praise my dog either; I still love him. They've warned people off "their" tags, like they own all the STRIKE related tags. 🤦‍♀️ GOOD. Hopefully it means less moronic comments.
Anyhoo, I'll continue to make appropriate comments [positive, negative and neutral] as I see fit. And anyone who wishes to have a look and wander along is welcome. I don't think JKR is transphobic and I support her right to free speech: take it or leave it. JKR is a good writer of thrillers but I haven't read another thing she has written.

When when you were reading the cuckoos calling, what the moments that made you go “I love Cormoran Strike”?
I don't think i went full "I love Strike" before Silkworm.
Maybe it's because I saw the adaptation of TCC first (tbh i didn't planned on reading the series before the whole drama around Troubled Blood) but i found it rather formulaic.
Silkworm is really when I got attached to the characters and where JKR's style started to shine. Then with CoE I was hooked (I like serial killer stories lol).

Strike Walk #4
All around Barrow-in-Furness
Career of Evil chapters 24-27
This is Part 4. There's links to other parts at the end.
Stanley Road terminates in a small play park.
Tumblr media
Strike knocks at the Brockbank house but gets no reply, and Robin takes a picture of some nearby workmen, thinking one of them might be Noel. This brings the police to them and they are warned to take no more photos. No-one arrived to arrest me, even though I was loitering for a good twenty minutes snapping pictures like David Bailey. Either security is too lax or they've stopped making submarines and the whole place has been secretly converted to manufacturing Weetabix.
Tumblr media
A helpful neighbour tips them off that Holly Brockbank, not Noel, lives at the address they have. Holly works at a bakery in Vickerstown "just up the road from Vengence Street" and drinks in The Crow's Nest pub a few yards away.
Strike and Robin travel to Holly's workplace, so must go over Jubilee Bridge, formerly plain old Walney Bridge but renamed in 1935 for the silver jubilee of George V. It spans "the estuary, where sailing boats bobbed on dirty-looking water or sat marooned on mudflats."
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also there's what looks like a mystery cylindrical buidling, and since TRG all mystery cylindrical buildings have to be investigated. (I don't make the rules, OK?) Can confirm it's part of the Methodist Church and it's square. So that's OK then.
Tumblr media
Strike, initially surprised that there's a "Vengeance Street" guesses (as they drive along Amphitrite Street) that the road names refer to the names of ships. According to Wikipedia, there have been seven HMS Amphitrites (including a cruiser launched in 1898 in Barrow) and eight HMS Vengeances (including a nuclear submarine built in Barrow and launched in 1998). I also saw a Euryalus Street and there's a Barrow-built ship of that name, so I think the road names are locally built ships.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Vengence Street ran up a hill" (and indeed it runs down the other side) and a good hundred yards or so away from the end of it Strike and Robin find "a little, white painted bakery". It was in this building, now pebble-dashed and a beauty salon called "Beautique".

Just watching CAREER OF EVIL again. Robin really starts showing her stupidity and immaturity in this series.
She's just been made partner in a job that she supposedly loves and wants. AND they've been sent a severed leg in the post. But clever Robin DELETES messages from the senior partner and decides to ignore him. As you do ‼️ She is so smart.
And consistently ignores warnings and guidance from a partner with a lot more experience than her. Luckily it's fiction, so the author can make it work out for her, without damage.

:o i didnt know she was against transabled! i knew about the transgender stuff! do you have any examples? i haven't read the book
Good, I would not suggest that you ever do! I'll give you some examples here, but they may be triggering or otherwise upsetting to some, so do not read further if ableism, transableism, fatphobia, thriller mystery things such as death and dismemberment, or if a scene of an angry white man yelling belligerently would trigger or otherwise just upset you.
Okay, so quick rundown: there's this girl named Kelsey, her severed leg gets sent to Robin, the mild-tempered assistant to manly detective main character Cormoran Strike (yes that is his name, this is the third book in the Cormoran Strike series). So Cormoran and Robin are On The Case, some stuff happens, they find out Kelsey would frequent some online forums for transabled people (specifically those with BIID) cause she wanted her leg off apparently.
Now Cormoran is, as mentioned, a manly detective. He is ex-military and lost a leg in Afghanistan due to an IED. However someone thought to be the murderer told Kelsey that this is a lie that Cormoran told to hide the fact that he is also A Weirdo (/s) that purposely had his leg removed. He is, of course, very offended by this.
This leads him to Jason and Tempest (not her Birth Name, btw!). Tempest is a transabled activist who owns the site that Kelsey would frequent. This is how Jason and Tempest are introduced:
Tumblr media
Very tasteful. /s
Tempest in particular is clearly set up as a strawman for a lot of traits JKR doesn't like in a person, but as we're focusing on transableism here, we'll skip most of the conversation and go to this paragraph:
Tumblr media
Notice not only the blatant transableism, but also ableism as well. Cormoran here can apparently tell who does or does not "need" to use a wheelchair based solely on his experience with soldiers who became paraplegic and quadriplegic from war injuries.
The discussion between the two parties comes to an end when Mr. Cormoran decides that has he has Had Enough and goes on this tirade:
Tumblr media
We see some common reactionary arguments here that transableists often tout. Add in a little pro-military rhetoric, and you have a Totally Justifiable Rant (/s).
Don't even get me started on how she portrayed acrotomophiliacs.
All in all, this is a very typical JKR book. I had to go digging for an e-book copy as I honestly had forgotten a lot of the specific details, but I wanted to give you a detailed-ish answer to your question. I had honestly forgotten just how bad it was and just how much of JKR's disdain for people she considers degenerates will bleed into her writing.
