#CATS Chicago 2005
best friends to lovers destiel au fic recs list for @thetiredstuff :D
A Tale of Two Tropes by Amelia_Clark (E, 7k)
“Am I going to regret this?” Cas asked from the passenger seat.
They’d just pulled up outside Dean’s grandmother’s house, a tidy Craftsman bungalow painted a cheerful yellow. It didn’t look threatening; there was a porch swing with crocheted cushions and a cement statue of a goose on the porch. The goose was wearing a rain slicker and hat the same color as the house.
In this fic: fake dating, bed-sharing, the doting grandmother Dean Winchester never had, a cement goose with a wardrobe, a contemptuous cat, and a lot of sexual tension that's unresolved until it isn't.
As You Walk On By by MercyBraavos (E, 23k)
Dean and Castiel grew up together. Fell in love together. Lost their virginity together. Made plans for the future, their future, together. There’s only one problem:
Castiel doesn’t remember any of it.
Are We Any Different? by LeviathanBlue, SerpentCountess (T, 41k)
Cas adopts (steals) a cow.  Dean helps.
“Cas… There’s a… There’s a cow.  In my room.” “Yes, Dean.” “Why?” “Because.” "Right."
More Than Kisses by  FriendofCarlotta  (E, 29k)
1996: Dean joins his high school’s pen pal program as a last-ditch effort to keep from repeating the eleventh grade. But soon, the letters he trades with Castiel, a fellow high schooler from Chicago, become the most important constant of his life.
2005: Castiel has been in love with his pen pal Dean for years now. But he’s reluctant to upset the balance of their relationship, so when a new work opportunity takes him to Dean’s city, he keeps it a secret. Will these two ever find their way to each other?
things i knew when i was young by stormwarnings  (T, 16k)
Ok, so Castiel's in love with his best friend.
Which is what puts them here, in Dean’s car, eight hours into a nine and a half hour drive up north to bury Castiel’s mother on the grounds that he grew up on. Because it’s been eight years since Castiel cut ties with his family and left, supposedly for college, and there hasn’t been a word of communication since. Because Dean is, at his core, a good person and a better friend, and when he heard that Castiel’s mother had died and that he would need to return to his childhood home over Thanksgiving break, he knew enough to say he’d go with him.
This is, for sure, not helping Castiel get over his inappropriately persistent feelings.
(more under the cut)
Alright  by  turningthepages  (T, 46k)
Dean is a good kid living in a good town surrounded by good friends and good family. Castiel is the new kid in town and has never truly had a friend before.
Dean comes along and starts to change things for him.
To Build a Home by intothesilentland  (M, 383k)
Twenty-three years of head-over-heels, devastating devotion and love, love, love for the man with bright eyes and dark hair. Fourteen years of friends, best friends, of always together. One moment of rejection.
Nine years of apart. Nine years of heartbreak, nine years of continents away, of not speaking, of no acknowledgement, no interaction, no closure, no peace. No happiness. Nine years of Dean’s life entering motions, going through them, constant, cold and mechanic, like clockwork. Nine years of alone.
God. Nine years. A lot has changed. And yet Dean still loves Cas just the same. Even if his heart hurts all kinds of different.
On the day of Jimmy Novak's funeral, Dean sees Cas for the first time in nine years. He adored Castiel the moment he met him, at only four years old. But after fourteen years of friendship destroyed by one moment of heartbreak, and after nine years of silence, Dean is convinced Cas will want nothing to do with him. And it's killing him.
When In Vegas  by  Dmsilvis, TobytheWise (E, 16k)
Dean has figured out the most perfect prank. The prank to top every other prank. Ever. Getting his best friend drunk and then convincing him they’d gotten married in their drunken stupor was easy. Dealing with Castiel telling him he’s been in love with Dean for years? Well, that’s a different thing entirely.
Castiel wakes up married to the love of his life who he’s been secretly pining over for years. Now he just has to convince Dean that he’ll be the best husband ever, making sure Dean will never regret the decision he made that night.
Things take a terrible turn when Castiel finds out everything was a lie in the name of a prank just as Dean realizes how much he truly loves Castiel back. Will they be able to overcome this misunderstanding or was their relationship doomed before it even started?
The Ocean Between Us  by  noxsoulmate  (E, 27k)
Living a hermit life, Dean Winchester didn’t need much. The only things important to him were his position in the business that was once owned by his family, his boat, and his friendship with Castiel, Charlie, and Gabriel. If only there wasn’t a whole ocean between them, then maybe he could even give his feelings for Castiel a chance …
Room for Two (The Mattress AU) by  almaasi  (E, 14k)
✔ College roommates ✔ Buying a mattress together ✔ Faking a relationship to get a discount ✔ Sharing a bed ✔ Roleplaying as a couple to "test the bed" ✔ Fake kissing becomes real kissing ✔ Fake sex is Way Too Real ✔ Cuddling ✔ Wet dreams ✔ "Oh no I thought I was dreaming but it was real life" ✔ Matchmakers Sam & Charlie ✔ Cas seems kinda clueless but actually understands everything ✔ Mutual respect, support, and understanding ✔ Friends to lovers ✔ Mutual pining ✔ Go౦ԁ sHit
Honey-Baked  by  mishaminion69, sydkn3e (E,  89k)
There's no ifs, ands, or buts about it...Cas is a weird, tactless, ornery guy. His idea of a job is selling weed out of their shared cabin, his idea of fun is occasional orgies, and he has more creepy dolls and crystals than anyone of their age ever should.
But he's also Dean's childhood best friend, and now he's the star of all Dean's wildest fantasies.
Then there's the whole "being in love with him" thing.
The Ones We Choose  by  lightmyway  (E, 82k)
After telling his family he’s gay, Castiel winds up homeless.   With the help of his best friend, Cas finds himself a home and a new family.  He also finds himself in love with his best friend.  A love that endures no matter the circumstances of their lives, even in the wake of Dean’s rejection.
Despite knowing how Cas feels, Dean clings to his best friend through the years.  In high school and college.  As roommates.  Through Cas becoming a firefighter and his own journey to become a business owner.  With shared time and space, Dean begins to see Cas in a new light.  His attraction grows, along with his feelings.
Letting those feelings spill out one night, Dean changes the trajectory of their lives.  As their relationship grows, they are confronted by Cas’s past and must relive a painful and damaging event in Dean’s life.  But it is the life-changing fire, which is their greatest challenge, making them face their deepest fears and test the strength of their love.

Broadway Divas Tournament: Round 3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aw, they're wearing matching glasses.
Two-time Tony-winning dancer-extraordinaire Bebe Neuwirth (1958) is best known for her winning role as Velma Kelly in Chicago (1996) alongside her beloved Annie Reinking. After playing Velma off-and-on for some years, she then took on Roxie, and later Matron "Mama" Morton. Bebe has also won for Sweet Charity (1986), and is a two-time Emmy winner for, of course, Lilith in Cheers. Other credits include Here Lies Jenny (2004), Fosse (2001), and Cabaret (2024), opening this week. In addition to her beloved stage, Bebe is a devoted cat-lover, and activist. She founded the Dancers' Resource program to provide support for injured and/or aging dancers.
THE Baker's Wife, Joanna Gleason (1950) is a Tony-winning legend who set a standard that has yet to even be approached. Her Baker's Wife in the original Into the Woods beat out Patti's Reno Sweeney, and Patti is still a little pissed off about it. She was also in infamous flop Nick & Nora (1991), Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (2005), and I Love My WIfe (1977). Nowadays, she devotes her focus to directing and screenwriting and her film The Grotto won Best Narrative Premiere at the Heartland Film Festival.

*years later* thanks so much for the tag @lovelybeautifulpretty!! cant recall if i warned u before but i tend to go buckwild with these, sorry and your welcome :D
Here are top 10 fav films and surprise surprise, im just a hot mess of eclectic tastes 🤷‍♀️ in no particular order:
Tumblr media
Robocop
This 80s masterpiece is a smart political satire/social commentary disguised as a comic book/action revenge movie that interweaves hilarious dark humor, ultraviolence and science fiction in a simple yet seamless plot. It will honestly SHOCK you just how much it has to say on American evolutions in capitalism, media influence, desensitization to violence, gentrification, and our perception of heroes, each in service of a greater conversation about identity and culture.
Tumblr media
Atonement
I consider this film the pinnacle of an angsty/doomed romance executed perfectly on-screen: the performances, the cinematography, the music, EVERYTHING!! Funny story, me & the girlfriends went to see this in theaters expecting a typical period romance; left completely snot-dripping, bawling our eyes out. I shit you not, i felt the utter devastation from this film for WEEKS
Tumblr media
Amelie
If there was a film to define the term "whimsy" then this is it!! Its so creatively rich, with such a fun and sweet art style in the characters, the way its filmed, the music, the romance- it'll make your heart ache for days.
Tumblr media
Inglorious Basterds
I'm a big whore for Tarantino ever since Reservoir Dogs, but I consider film his ABSOLUTE masterpiece. The comedically distinct characters, the sharpness of dialogue, how he builds up the tension of scenes to the point of explosion with just a simple conversation- *CHEFS KISS*
Tumblr media
Children of Men
This dystopian sci fi drama was made in 2005 but with all the social commentary woven into the background of the story, it is eerily topical in today's tumultuous political & social climate (which is very telling about us as a society I suppose). The director Alfonso Cuaron is a master at "show don't tell" filmmaking and it SHOWS. Also the tracking long shots in this film are something to witnessed, beheld even. Masterpiece.
Tumblr media
Bridget Jones' Diary
My absolute FAV romantic comedy, i totally relate to this bumbling, epic disaster of a woman, even more so now that i'm 30+ like her. Fun fact, the plot is heavily inspired by Pride & Prejudice which is probably why i love it so much. Also Colin Firth 🥵 (which leads me to another fun fact- he was cast as Mark Darcy mainly due to the author's crush on him from his portrayal of Mr. Darcy in the 1996 BBC miniseries which put him on the map, and rightly so. I know the film adaption is super popular, but any P&P fan NEEDS to watch this version, so so good)
Tumblr media
Chicago
This musical ruined all theater musicals for me forever- the film adaptation is THAT good!!! The spectacle, the numbers, the PERFORMANCES- Catherine Zeta Jones slayed as Velma Kelly (also my ovaries), i love it so much that i watched it 3 times back to back on a flight i honestly couldnt get enough lol
Tumblr media
Kung Fu Hustle
This film is Stephen Chow's magnum opus- an action comedy that blends kung-fu and all sorts of historical chinese references and homages of the directors favorite films, you can tell the passion and the fun that went into making this film and it really REALLY shows. I consider this a perfect execution of what a live-action anime could be, this film is an absolute blast and classic
Tumblr media
Annihilation
I've got a bit of a cosmic/existential horror kink (where a form of media makes you question the world/life as we know it or triggers an existential crisis) and this film gets it RIGHT. It's a philosophical sci-fi thriller but is so much more with its themes of pain and identity, exploration of humanity's disposition for self destruction but also its unsettling visuals and soundtrack. Funny story, the sound design is so alien/unsettling that it spooked my cat from her nap and got her staring at the screen with wide eyes and an arched back trying to figure out what the eff was going on (me as well).
Also love how its an all female cast but its never mentioned in-film; just a bunch of capable women going to take care of business (i didnt even notice until my 2nd watch)- im a fan of this approach as it in effect "normalizes" this scenario whereas calling it out as if its special just highlights how it's an exception...anyway, its a horrifically beautiful film.
Tumblr media
Sicario
Denis Villeneuve can do no wrong in my eyes (nor cinematographer Roger Deakins), a beautifully shot thriller that serves as a social commentary on how laws are meant to be broken, lines are drawn and then erased when convenient, as long as it serves a so-called greater purpose, that keeping a moral code is a futile effort. Brilliant performed and written, nuanced characters, glorious cinematography and a killer soundtrack (RIP Johan Johansson), A+++++
alright sorry for the long rambling post, cant help myself! Tagging a bunch a folks that seem alive per my notifs, no pressure of course!!!

The complete list of films featured on this blog’s 2023 “31 Days of Oscar” marathon
Hello everyone,
Thank you once more for allowing me to present the annual marathon of Oscar-nominated films to your dashboards. This year, the films were grouped by genre or subgenre in primetime (5 PM Pacific into the night). This is the most exclusive period on this blog, as the selection of films that I can post and queue about is at its most limited. But at the same time, the blog is at its most accessible as this yearly marathon’s selection skew to more popular fare. I hope you enjoyed this year’s presentation of 31 Days of Oscar.
What follows is the exhaustive list of all 380 short- and feature-length films featured on this blog over the last thirty-one days for the 31 Days of Oscar marathon. This is down from last year’s record of 420. But that count remains only a fraction of the 5,019 films that have been nominated for Academy Awards since 1927.
Of those 380, 37 were short films (53 short films is the record, which was set last year). 343 were feature films.
BREAKDOWN BY DECADE 1927-1929: 6 1930s: 52 1940s: 53 1950s: 50 1960s: 37 1970s: 31 1980s: 25 1990s: 25 2000s: 27 2010s: 31 2020s: 50
TOTAL: 380
Year with most representation (2022 excluded): 1940 (11 films) Median year: 1967
Time for the list. 62 Best Picture winners and the one (and only) winner for Unique and Artistic Production that I featured this year are in bold. Asterisked (*) films are films I haven’t seen in their entirety as of the publishing of this post. Films primarily not in the English language are accompanied with their nation(s) of origin.

See ya, 2023. You were... a lot.
I'm equal parts delighted and horrified that this year is coming to a close. To be honest, I'm still mentally trapped in late August-September...
2023 was a huge year of change:
The Baxter dlc wrapped and launched early in the year.
People assumed I was under 18 the entire day I was celebrating my 30th birthday. It was insane. Culminated with the friendly's waitress asking if I wanted the children's menu and my friend nearly hit the floor laughing.
My scared of heights ass got on an airplane for the first time! I only had a mild wave of panic once.
I went on an incredible trip with two of my most dear and important friends and we all experienced Chicago for the first time together.
And we saw Fall Out Boy kick off their tour at Wrigley Field. It was an extra special show too:
I was in the audience for episode 1 of AEW Collison.
I went back to my seasonal job from before the pandemic and helped my boss with projects she couldn't juggle on her own.
My mum's car officially broke for good. The body was so rusted and fragile that the steering was severed. And since I don't know how to drive and rely on that car... we were fucked. For months. And by that, I mean that we had to still use that car to get groceries, medicine, appointments. Not fun...
Our cat, Petey, just made it to his 21st birthday at the end of September. He began to decline at the end of August and his heart simply gave out. He was loved dearly, and treated like a king. He was happy and full of personality up until the very end.
I'm yet again reminded of these silly drawings of him <3
Tumblr media
I bought my mum a car! It's a clunker that was new in 2005, but it runs and passed inspection! So we are back and legal on the road again.
Though, it took the majority of my bank account... so after taxes I'm expecting to be rebuilding my savings from scratch in the New Year.
There's a family member that caused a lot grief this year and I'm coming to terms with the fact that I'm done with them. There are actions I refuse to let pass by. I'm deeply hurt and I will not forget this feeling.
I finally pushed through my doubts and fears, and opened up more in game dev spaces online. Imposter syndrome was horrifically strong, but I love all the new people I've been able to connect with. I'm growing more confident (some days), and I can't wait to see how these friendships grow.
There are exciting projects in the works that I can't wait to not shut up about!!!
I gave editing scripts a shot this year, and I love it a lot!
I participated in two game jams and I'm so proud of both teams.
My website went through several updates. I finally decided to move the blog aspect to tumblr. It feels so much better than what I was fighting with before! I ended up removing this part of my About Me page... shortly after Petey passed. It's still saved on a hidden page. I just needed to move it while I process life without him.
Tumblr media
If the clock was turned back to this time last year, I can tell you for a fact that I couldn't have predicted any of this. This year has been a mixed bag.
I wish I was stronger. There are too many instances where I dropped the ball, and I still am. All I can do is try. And I do. Every day.
And I'm so proud of every good moment and success. I hope 2024 is a kinder year. For me, and my loved ones.
My Current 2024 Goals:
Read more books.
Laugh harder.
Turn any of my rough ideas/concepts into something.
Join more game jams!
Build back some of my move out money.
Keep working on my website: I want to try out a testimonial page. Maybe? I'm still somewhat embarrassed by that thought, but it could be beneficial for applying to jobs. If... when that comes up. I also just want a reason to slip in this comment from one of my friends:
Tumblr media
I want to make a better writing portfolio and craft an editing one too!
I might look into if there's any interest in doing more editing & proofreading work for smaller game projects in exchange for a few dollars. And figure out real rates for projects with actual budgets. (For game jams, please just ask if I have time because more than likely I'll be thrilled to volunteer some hours!)
Learn to drive a car. Maybe this year I won't feel terribly paranoid behind the wheel...
I can't thank the incredible people in my life enough for their kindness, wisdom, strength, and support over the course of 2023. I wouldn't be here without any of you.
And a huge thank you to all the new people 2023 brought into my life. I hope our friendships grow, or at the very least pass with only good memories attached. I hope many of us are able to make many wonderful games in the future!
So goodbye, goodnight, and have a Happy New Year!!!

**GENERAL JUNK** How many people do you know with the same first name as you?
Quite a lot. My namre is common here.
What in your opinion is the best love song ever written?
The Beautiful Wound by At The Gates, althopugh I’m not even sure of it. I don’t give a crap about most love songs.
What were you doing at this time yesterday?
The same thing as today.
Have you done anything drastic to alter your physical appearance recently?
Does getting another tattoo count?
Is there anything bothering you right now?
Yeah. I’ve bitten my cheek by accident and now it’s a little bit swollen and I keep biting on it while eating. It’s both annoying and painful.
Are you wearing shoes right now?
No, I’m at home on the couch.
How old were you in 2005?
I was 15.
Pro-life/Pro-choice?
Pro-let people decide for themselves. Which is pro-choice technically.
Are you wearing anything purple?
Not at the moment.
Do you live east or west of the Mississippi River?
I live east of the whole Atlantic Ocean, on that mysterious continent called Europe. Mindblowing, isn’t it?
Have you ever been to Chicago?
I’ve never been to the US.
Do you drive a stick-shift?
I don’t drive at all, but my husband does because he prefers stick shift.

My hair is too short.

Yeah, in plenty of languages. I can even speak more than one fluently, English is not my native language.
Is there a calendar in the room you are in?
Yeah, it is. With cats as usual.
Is it possible you could be pregnant?
No. There’s no technology yet that would allow cis men to get pregnant.
How long is it until your birthday?
Two weeks.
Do you know anyone with the same birthday as you?
I used to know a girl named Eveline, she was in the same school as me. From my friends, Stefan.

What Are You Doing in My Timeline?
This is an alternate timeline I made where Chris Farley lived long enough to finish recording all of his lines for Shrek. What follows is a strange timeline. It was really fun imagining these movies because many of them actually happened.
The story starts in 1997. On December 18, 1997, Chris Farley’s brother John invites him over (so that night Chris doesn’t have the speeball that killed him). He completes the audio for a new animated movie called Shrek directed by Vicky Jensen and Adam Adamson a week later. On January 10, 1998, he’s found dead on the streets of Chicago from an overdose. His last movie Shrek, is released in April 2000 ahead of Disney’s film Dinosaur. It does fine, but not fine enough.
December 18, 1997-Chris Farely stays with his brother John.
January 10, 1998-Chris Farely dies of a drug overdose.
2000
-Shrek starring Chris Farely, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz is released before Disney’s Dinosaur. It earns $123 million on a $54 million budget. People criticize it for taking advantage of Farley’s recent death, and the animation looks too scary for children. The film will ultimately find a second life online, in the same vein as Disney’s Treasure Planet (Never becoming the meme material that it should’ve been). Chicken Run grosses more, barely keeping the company afloat.
-Disney releases Dinosaur and The Emperor’s New Groove to half-decent turnout.
2001
-Mike Myers appears in Dieter’s Day, a comedy film directed by Bo Welch which performs modestly and helps keep SNL films alive for the next few years.
-Disney releases Atlantis, to good reception.
-Pixar releases Monster’s Inc, to great success.
-Dreamworks fails to make much from El Dorado.
2002
-Pixar releases its first fairy tale film, Tam Lin, directed by Brenda Chapman. It is awarded the Oscar for best Animated film. Tam Lin becomes enshrined in the Disney hero category similar to Peter Pan and Aladdin. At the 2003 Academy Awards, a rambling John Lasseter accepts the award for Tam Lin. He says, “Eisner told me this was the year of Stitch. This time it’s the year of Lin.”
-Disney releases Lilo and Stitch and Treasure Planet. However bad blood between John Lasseter and Chris Sanders/Dean Dublois (exacerbated by the Oscar speech) results in the two leaving the company.
-Dreamworks releases Spirit of a Horse with Ben Affleck as the film’s narrator. It performs poorly.
-Blue Sky releases Ice Age, to great success. It’s directed by Don Bluth who managed to finally work with CGI.
2003
-Tim Allen stars in Universal’s Adaptation of The Cat in the Hat. It becomes another modest hit for Imagine Entertainment after The Grinch. And they greenlight plans for a rock musical adaptation of The Lorax starring Jack Black to be released on Earth Day 2005.
-Disney releases Great Bear with Johnny Depp as the titular Kenai.
-Pixar releases Finding Nemo. William H. Macey’s performance as Marlin has the critics applauding.
-Dreamworks folds after the failure of Sinbad (an untitled undersea remake of Mean Streets with Chris Rock and Robert de Niro halt production, and footage of it becomes a holy grail of lost media sleuths in the late 2010s). Katzenburg decides it’s time for him to enter into the internet age, and takes a position back at Sony while working on a video-downloading platform called Quiki. Dreamworks assets are sold to Paramount, and many of the old directors and writers of the company go onto work for Nickelodeon. Films like Nome (an adaptation of the books by Terry Pratchett) and Escape from Manhattan (about a Lion, Hippo, Okapi, and a Giraffe escaping the zoo only to wind up in New Jersey) are put into production. With the dissolution of Dreamworks, Aardman then gains a contract with 20th Century Fox, with their next five films being released alongside Blue Sky.
2004
-Disney releases Cows Gone Wild with Rosie O’donnel, and it does modestly.
-Pixar releases The Supers. Blake Snyder, writer of the screenplay Nuclear Family sues Pixar and receives a portion of the film’s profits.
-Mike Myers stars as Inspector Clouseau in The Pink Panther.
-Wallace and Gromit: The Great Vegetable Plot by Aardman and Blue Sky is released to critical acclaim.
-Nickelodeon releases The Spongebob Squarepants Movie to great success.
2005
-Disney releases Mark Dindal’s The Ugly Duckling to mixed reviews. Joan Cusack earns praise for her performance as said Duckling facing obstacles in a summer camp.
-Blue Sky releases Robots to great success.
-Disney doesn’t renew Pixar’s contract due to bad blood between John Lasseter and Bob Iger, as well as diminishing returns. In the media storm rumors arise about Lasseter and possible sexual harassment (in our timeline he was let go because of this). He is ousted from the company and his successor is Pete Doctor. Lasseter goes on to work for Jeffrey Katzenberg’s new Clouding Service (in this timeline streaming is called clouding).
-Imagine Entertainment releases The Lorax with Jack Black as the Lorax and Chevy Chase as the Oncler, and despite music by Bon Jovi the film is laughed off. This is the one which causes Dr. Seuss’ widow to stop making live-action adaptations of her husband’s work.
2006
-Quiki is launched as a subscription based website where for $4.99 a month, you can download 11 or 22 minute episodes of original shows on your iPod and later Zune. Some of the shows include new sitcoms such as Penny and the Geeks produced by Chuck Lorre, and Phineas & Ferb, a flash cartoon by Dan Povenmire and Jeff Marsh. Captain Underpants is also brought to the platform starring Johnny Bravo actor Jeff Bennet as the titular captain. Katzenberg tries to acquire Homestar Runner to no avail.
-Disney releases The Robinsons, to negative reviews. Critics complain that the main villain played by Jim Carrey wasn’t scary enough.
-Pixar releases Monsters Inc. 2: Lost in Scaradise. The final scene where Sully sits with Boo as she is about to pass, music by Hans Zimmer, is acclaimed by critics as one of the most brilliantly edited montages of all time. At this time they have launched a joint venture with Robert Zemeckis to create a new studio called PIXAR LIVE, a mo-cap company, after the success of Robert Zemeckis’ mo-cap adaptation of Zathura.
-Nickelodeon releases Escape from Manhattan, now called Life’s a Jungle. It is hailed as a brilliant social satire of New Jersey’s infrastructure disguised as a goofy kids film. It features Breckin Meyer as Allen the Lion, Queen Latifah as Gloria the Hippo, Jerry Seinfeld as Benny the Okapi, and Matt Leblanc as Simon the Giraffe.
-Sony releases The Wild, with Cedric the Entertainer as a bear who gets lost in Cascadia and decides to create his own theater like the one he performed for in Yellowstone. The film is praised as an animated ‘remake’ of Werner Herzog’s Fitzceraldo.
-Chris Sanders releases American Dog for Blue Sky, the story of a successful dog actor who is forced to make his way in the world. The film is completely without dialogue. They find success and even receive the Oscar for Best Animated Feature. Debates as to whether or not this or Monsters Inc. 2 deserve the Oscar go on to the present day.
2007
-Eric Darnell and Chris Buck direct and release Surfin’ Birds. Originally an idea Eric pitched to Dreamworks as a mockumentary with a four-penguin band similar to The Beatles. After his pitch is rejected and Dreamworks dissolves, he finds work at Sony who is working with Chris Buck on a penguin surfing sports film. EMI won’t let them have the rights to The Beatles, so the film is reworked to have the penguins be more similar to The Beach Boys or The Monkees.
-Disney releases an adaptation of Don Quixote with Wilmer Valderrama as Alonso Quijano and Cheech Marin as Sancho. Like Hunchback, it is criticized for watering down a beloved classic, but it finds a new following in the early 2020s.
-Pixar Live releases its first film 1906 featuring Al Pacino in multiple roles. Directed by Brad Bird and an adaptation of the novel of the same name by James Dalessandro, the film about the 1906 earthquake uses mo-cap, and is praised for expanding the medium.
-Nickelodeon releases A Fairly Odd Movie with Justin Long as Timmy, Wanda Sykes as Wanda, Sean Hayes as Cosmo, and Jim Carrey as Mr. Crocker. 4Chan debates Sykes’ casting, with the memes resulting in her calling out the racist ‘internet goblins’ on Conan.
2008
-Aardman’s latest film Crood Awakening is released. Originally an adaptation of The Twits by Roald Dahl, now rewritten and starring John Cleese, the story is of a caveman struggling to evolve in an ever-changing world.
-Pixar releases Toy Story 3. The film about Woody and Buzz attending Andy’s college drew criticism for too many jokes about the way that college works. The film was a box office hit, even with college students.
-Invader Zim finds a third season on Quiki.
-Blue Sky releases Jack Frost, an adaptation of William Joyce’s The Guardians of Childhood, the film has Aaron Carter as Jack and Santa Claus facing off against Bill Nighey’s Pitch Black.
2009
-Disney releases The Sleeping Beauty. A 3D film which is an epic fantasy retelling of Sleeping Beauty. With Mandy Moore as Aurora and Michelle Pfeiffer as Maleficent. The film is criticized for trying to start a franchise, but praised for its sympathetic and nuanced portrayal of Maleficent.
-Pixar releases Newt, a film about two newts who are the last of their species. The film is praised by critics, but draws criticism from Sean Hannity for being too Tree-Huggy and criticism from Greenpeace for its expansive toyline. PIXAR LIVE also releases an adaptation of Yellow Submarine directed by Robert Zemeckis. Tho the real life John and Ringo initially showed support, they retract it when seeing the final movie and its horrifying animation.
-Brad Bird and John Lasseter form a new studio named Noma Studios. Katzenberg shows interest.
2010
-Disney releases their 2D film The Snow Queen. Originally conceived as a musical before director Kevin Lima vetoed that decision, the film underperforms but with praise given towards Kristin Chenowith as the Snow Queen and John and Joan Cusack as the twins.
-Pixar releases The Bear and the Bow featuring Karen Gillian, blowing up at the box office and establishing director Brenda Chapman as one of the great Pixar directors. She sets out to adapt a film based on the fairy tale East of the Sun West of the Moon. Disney and Pixar bury the hatchet and their partnership resumes.
-Quiki in conjunction with Nickelodeon releases Zim’s Revenge, a film which is released in theaters and shortly afterwards online. It becomes a surprise moneymaker and viral hit.
-Aardman releases Tortoise vs. Hare, a story of the tortoise and the hare but about their rematch. Starring Miriam Margoles, Bob Hoskins, and an up and comer called Tom Holland. It underperforms being seen as Aardman’s first mid production.
-Sony and Happy Madison release Castle Drac, starring George Lopez as Dracula, failing to convince his daughter, played by Selena Gomez, to stay in the castle. It is a musical which takes home the Oscar for best Original Song “Little Bite of Love”.
-After the death of Bill Waterson in 2004, Blue Sky acquires the rights to Calvin and Hobbes and releases its adaptation with Robin Williams as Hobbes. The film underperforms and is praised for its ground-breaking animation but criticized by fans for not being something Bill would want.
2011
-Clouding services are starting to overtake TV, but Quiki may not be a part of it after Katzenberg decides to partner with Blockbuster. Lasseter and Bird are at Noma with Bird setting out to direct Ray Gunn and Lasseter an adaptation of Dr. Seuss’ The Sneetches. And the worst part is that there are people online who are beginning to hate Pixar for letting him go.
Katzenberg finally acquires Homestar Runner during the Chapman Brother’s Hiatus. Truly this is a disturbing timeline.
