down at the drive-in ch 2 sneak peek
I originally had dreams of finishing and posting this investigative bughead story on riverdale series finale day but life got away from me. so, in honor of the end of the ridiculous show that brought us bughead and the beautiful fandom space we’ve all created together, here’s a sneak peek. I love you all and personally, I plan to keep writing rvd fanfic so this isn’t goodbye to our bughead family—it’s just farewell to canon, whatever the hell that even means anymore.
Tumblr media
It’s strange to admit, but the creepy, bigoted mystery she’s been investigating with Jughead has turned Betty’s attitude around. Each day she wakes up with a spring in her step. The hunger she feels to solve this mystery is new and exciting, like nothing she’s ever done before. (And yes, she’s counting the time she streaked with Cheryl and Veronica.)
Every day that week, Betty and Jughead spend their once-quiet lunch hours in the Blue and Gold office examining evidence and talking out theories. They keep the door shut in an unspoken ritual, something sinister about the case lending itself to confidentiality.
On Tuesday, they spend the lunch hour poring over the Riverdale section of 4chan, even following a couple offshoots and more obscure right-wing forums in the area, but come up with no leads. Betty leans over Jughead to see his laptop screen, and there’s a moment when their eyes lock and she knows neither of them are thinking about the case. But the moment passes unacknowledged, and when the bell rings, they go their separate ways.
On Wednesday, they come up with the idea to put up a flier for a Young Republicans club, hoping to bait the bigot into bragging about their crimes. They even consider going shopping for more conservative looking clothing, but then….
…On Thursday, the members of Toni Topaz’s militant feminist club spend their lunchtime meeting phone banking the number on their flier in protest, flooding Jughead’s voicemail inbox with angry messages.
“We should’ve invested in a burner phone,” Jughead murmurs, his phone to his ear as he empties his voice mailbox, one by one.
“I just don’t think the Blue and Gold has a burner phone budget,” Betty insists, and after realizing what she’s said, they both burst out laughing.

It’s so funny to go into CWRiverdale instagram comments. You can still find a bunch of people going “we need bughead endgame” like girl they haven’t even really interacted this entire season.
And actually did you even watch the previous seasons? She cheated on him (but god says it’s ok) and then they fell out of love and then he sent her a horrible voicemail and they didn’t talk for years and she didn’t even give a shit when he disappeared like 😭. Sure they became friends again but they have progressed past the point in their lives where being together would work.

Hi Ashton! I saw in your tags that Barchie is a notp for you and would love to hear why. I shipped Bughead but gave up in the show before Barchie ever got together :)
Oh god. Where to begin? I acknowledge that based on the pilot and the first couple of episodes of season 1, the idea of Betty and Archie together was fine. It wasn't particularly interesting, but at first they seemed to have a solid friendship that could have realistically developed into more if Archie only reciprocated Betty's feelings. Unfortunately, Riverdale basically handled every fucking aspect of their relationship poorly. For one thing, the friendship between Betty and Archie was rarely ever on display unless they were interacting during group scenes or their possible romance was being teased to create drama for the Bughead and Varchie pairings. So in spite of the fact nothing concrete happened between Betty and Archie until the end of season 4, there was nothing to lean on once the writers finally started to head in the BA direction. While the lack of on screen friendship should be blamed on both, Archie in particular showed little interest in Betty's life.
This relationship destroys Betty. The crux of Betty's feelings for Archie, as inconsistent as they are, is that Betty views Archie as this beacon of light that can never be extinguished due to him being pure of heart or some other thing that I disagree with. She romanticizes the idea of how things were before life got so complicated. In her eyes, these childhood memories that we never saw were untainted and good. As a child, Betty always imagined she'd end up with Archie, marrying him at eighteen years old. Teen Betty held on to this dream for a very long time, but was forced to face the truth that Archie didn't feel the same way. If I'm being generous, I'd say Archie considered Betty as a backup plan, but not much more beyond that. But by the end of season 1, Betty realized she wanted so much more for her life than being a power couple with Archie. Betty found real love with Jughead, someone who saw all of her, embracing both the lightness and darkness. Betty discovered a love for investigating mysteries and going down the rabbit hole in the name of justice. Betty likes making murder boards and searching the woods in the middle of the night. Part of the reason for this is that Betty is inherently attracted to darker aspects of life. Betty struggles a lot to accept these sides of herself as her awful, abusive family tells her over and over that she's the problem and the one bringing misery to everyone's lives as she strives to help and improve things for her family. Based on the way she was written during seasons 1-4 prior to the cheating, it came across like Betty was beginning to accept these sides of herself, proud of the person she was with Jughead by her side.
But the moment things with Jughead seemed as though they were uncertain, as flimsy as the issue was (Jughead not doing his homework), Betty turned to Archie to escape from the reality of life. That basically sums up what Archie is to Betty during the adult years as well. When Betty finally confesses to Jughead what happened with Archie, it breaks them. The communication seems to die then and there with both remaining together passively until Betty leaves for college. We later see that Betty and Jughead reconnected to some degree during their freshmen year of college, talking and texting while in relationships with others, essentially engaging in an emotional affair. The timeline from there is confusing because the show could never decide when exactly Jughead left Betty the voicemail, but it seems clear that Betty's life kind of fell apart after that? She ends up having an affair with a married man (who might have turned out to be a serial killer? Seasons 5-7 are kind of a blur for me) and is eventually held captive by the Trash Bag Killer. From there, we see that Betty has trauma over this. She refuses to deal or properly feel her emotions. Jughead is off limits. They still aren't talking and the divide between them has only grown bigger after the voicemail where Betty was led to believe Jughead hated her and thought she was a terrible person, not realizing he'd spiraled into alcoholism and drug use. Archie could never be alone and teenage Betty wanted to fuck Archie once upon a time, so why not? So they enter a friends with benefits relationship that ends up being much more about the benefits and filling a void than it is being actual friends to one another. Betty doesn't want Archie to be this person for her. He makes her feel good and comforted in the moment, but ultimately she's aware the two of them don't work. Not only that, but Archie verbalizes to his army friend that he does NOT want to be there emotionally for Betty. Much like in season 2 after their kiss, Archie went back to Veronica because that's where his heart led him.
Betty continues to emotionally spiral and doesn't seem to improve much over the course of the season. Archie doesn't seem to notice or care. Jughead does. Their interaction is limited, but there's a semblance of a rebuilding phase where the two renew their friendship and go back to investigating together. While Betty's feelings for Jughead are kept ambiguous because again, her emotions are being kept close to her chest and there's a lot she isn't saying or dealing with. Jughead, on the other hand, makes it clear multiple times throughout the season that he hasn't moved past his breakup with Betty and had already forgiven Betty by the time he returned to Riverdale even if he wasn't saying it. Then, completely out of nowhere, Jughead is singing about how he's "perfect" for Tabitha, a song that Bughead fans have frequently said fits Bughead far better. Due to Veronica breaking things off with Archie because she wanted to return to New York, something also totally random that never came to pass, a day drinking Archie decided that he wanted to sleep with his old pal Betty again so they basically get back together at the end of season 5 with zero build up. We don't know why Betty defaults back to Archie. Cheryl did some sort of spell that blatantly had an effect on the plot, though that's never addressed. Then, the characters are in Rivervale, and Betty murders Archie twice and shares a big moment with Jughead where they almost fuck to save the world. Back in regular Riverdale once the universes have been separated, Betty and Archie enter an official relationship. Everything is always about Archie. If there's ever any sort of conflict, Betty will be the one to sacrifice and to change her stance to make things easier for Archie. There's at least one scene where Betty is ranting about something bothering her and Archie is just sitting there like it doesn't matter to him. 99% of their conversations revolved around Archie wanting to fuck or save the town and get rid of Percival Pickens for good. Midway through the season, Betty had another crisis about fearing she was evil, but Archie (basically ripping off something Jughead said at the end of season 2; this also happened to be a flashback the audience had just seen during the episode where Betty and Jughead were going over Betty's past memories together, including multiple iconic Bughead moments) reassured Betty she was a good person, citing a childhood memory the audience had never seen to prove his point. And that's another thing! Rather than showing us much of anything between Betty and Archie in the present to convince us they were meant to be together or were compatible in any way, we just hear about random childhood memories. Everything Betty and Archie ever did revolved around looking back fondly on their so-called idyllic childhoods or having sex. Season 6 Betty came across as such a lesser version of herself. She was still herself, but it was as if she was holding back. It's like, maybe Betty doesn't want to get married? Can't have that! Archie has to settle down in Riverdale and recreate his father's life, meaning Betty needs to get over herself and shove her round self into a square peg so that all of Archie's dreams come true. I mean, multiple times during season 6, Archie was treated as akin to the savior of Riverdale while Betty was legitimately referred to as the "harlot of Babylon". Archie was perfect and indestructible while Betty was dark and dirty and needed to be cleansed before she could be accepted into Heaven. Basically, Archie is perfect as is and doesn't need to adjust himself in the slightest to become a better partner for Betty. But, Betty needs to change nearly everything about herself, reverting back to wanting things that only made sense to kid Betty, all to fulfill some old dream about settling down with Archie that the real Betty hadn't wanted in years. Not to mention the fact that as early as season 1, Betty resented being the perfect girl next door. Well, with Archie, that's basically all she was.
Betty and Archie were never going to work together, but the fact that Betty tried so hard to mold herself into some perfect, cookie cutter housewife, maternal figure all so Archie could have the white picket fence and the 2.5 kids makes me FURIOUS. It was incredibly misogynistic, and honestly led to me despising Archie. Betty deserved so much better. As fucked up and as gross as the "horny Betty" writing for the majority of season 7 was, I'm just relieved that Betty once again reiterated that she and Archie wanted different things and definitively didn't end up together.

when BH finally comes back together what it’s your ideal moment for the reunion? and what do you think the writers will do instated? Like – let’s say they have a big moment by the end of this season that factors into next season, how do you think it will go? and what would you like?
I know I’ll be disappointed because I wished they could’ve spoken about the cheating, archie, the book, the voicemail and just everything but the writers never gave them the chance to actually explore that. I think there’s so many things in the air for them and I don’t see how they could resolve that in a satisfactory way. I would first love a talk that encompasses all of the situations they haven’t talked about and later on, a big moment (probably when Jughead has to sacrifice himself) that pushes them to confess their love thinking it might be the last time kind of like Vale.
Oh god, pie in the sky anon, what I want is a combination:
I want a shouting to kissing reunion! We have waited two years, bring on the cliches! I want them shouting and working the crap from the last two years out, and then getting to the kissing.
And then I want soft bughead. Lots of soft bughead.
Will this happen? No, because it would be too satisfying, so Riverdale clearly can't do that. But imagine, them actually hashing out their shit and then coming back together? That's the stuff BH fans deserve!

The Jughead content was so disappointing this episode. My theory is that maybe to lean into Jabitha’s Rivervale episode and their ILY, they want to reintroduce Jughead’s trauma from his relationship with Betty. He looked so upset having to relive what they had knowing how it all ends. I loved that just as he was getting overwhelmed by the memories, he got Tabitha’s text and didn’t even hesitate to respond and tell her he missed her. Like I think these flashes of bughead are being used to finally allow Jughead to make peace with their ending in a healthy way (instead of bottling it up for years and leaving a toxic voicemail). If he was at all conflicted about being with Tabitha (which he isn’t AT ALL), he wouldn’t have answered her text. And if this was a “bughead feelings resurfacing plot”, then Betty would have had some type of reaction or POV during the memory trips, Jughead literally doesn’t exist to her. She’s all in with Archie and there isn’t even an inkling that she thinks of Jug romantically. So I really do think it’s just Jughead coming to terms with putting that relationship behind him fully and finally really moving on (which is weird, because I thought we already did that in season 5). I think it’s very telling that the episode was about Betty getting to the root of her trauma and the episode ends with Jughead doing the same.

The riverdale writer for the episode airing on my birthday (🤞 that it’s good) is Aaron Allen (alliterative a name, auspicious) who wrote the episode last season with the bughead voicemail and tabetty maple mushroom musical sequence so I think I should be okay

Yeah I’m pretty sure Tabi knows a lot about what happened with Bughead. Jughead legit told her after their first almost romantic encounter his relationship with Betty had left him messed up, she heard the voicemail which pretty much laid out what Betty did. She knows all of it.
And how clearly uncomfortable both slizzy and Jess made her. To say nothing of slizzys snide, sociopathic hostility and disparagement.
Or is that epic twu wuv too?

Riverdale S5 Ep 11. (The Voicemail Episode) -  5 things I loved/ 3 Things to Consider (potentially, spoilers)
Things I Loved:
1. I loved that Riverdale, this (formerly) teen show, was blatantly making a radical commentary about both religion and male violence, but in this sneaky way with a ‘silly’ looking trippy drugged-out music video.   The statement is this: Religion = Drugs = Righteous Violence of Young Men.   Marx said that religion is the opiate of the masses, and Riverdale answered, Nah, it's more like shrooms.
And in fact, according to the show, being two sweet girls hanging out dancing and having fun is better than religion and righteous violence.  Further, violence is Archie’s drug.  I mean this is a set of pretty bold statements, people.  I will also add the crazy young man vigilantes of Riverdale making the Batman rope-slide entrance was fabulous, but I also liked that the music made fun of them, like, Y’all think you’re being heroic but this is so dumb.
2. If you read my retread of Seasons 1 through 4  (the true ending, which was “Graduation”) you’ll know that I love scenes of Jughead Jones waking up from sleep.  He’s so good at it, and I don't know if my abiding interest in this specific thing elevates this to some sort of kink but  I’m ok with that, if it is. (Please tell me in the comments if Watching a Cute Boy Wake Up From Sleep is an actual kink.)  In this episode, Jughead is startled awake by a loud noise from a fevered sleep, and then becomes gradually more alarmed at the noises outside and I loved it.
3. This is not an anti-man blog here, so I will try to tread carefully, but I mean, I absolutely loved that the women are so much better than the men at everything in this episode.
Exhibit A:
Penelope’s cult is so much better than Edgar Evernever’s!  And she is being so honest - Penelope always emotionally worshiped her son, like a lot of misogynist mothers of sons do, and now she’s literally worshiping him.  Also a religion that is founded on a deceased person is much sturdier, I feel, than a religion that is like Worship Me (which is Edgar’s religion).  Plus Penelope is echoing what Jughead used to say about Jason - that his death laid bare the sins of Riverdale!   There’s robes in Penelope’s religion, colorful ones, singing and communion and imbibing from a magic goblet. (Can you tell I was raised Catholic? I still love statuary, robes and altars SO much).
Exhibit B:
Tabitha and Betty are so much better than Jughead at everything, including getting high!  (Jughead is currently just so bad at life he can’t even get high correctly, poor lamb.)  They are better at taking care of their domestic lives and are appalled at how Jughead lives. Tabitha modeling openness and transparency for Betty was terrific:  She asks Betty for help and makes sure to  tell her, though it’s difficult, about that ‘don’t be such a Betty’ comment and the fact that Jughead made a pass at Tabitha, so that she can make her decision to participate with the full set of relevant facts.   Betty’s reaction of wtf?? followed by snorting and then moving right on - I like grown up Betty SO much. She knows it’s not true - they always had fun together, did Bughead, so she’s like, That’s a weird thing to say and then SHRUG.
Exhibit C:
Even when burly men are in a violent confrontation in this episode, the mastermind for both teams is a woman - Veronica on one side, Darla on the other.
4. I loved the two voicemails from Jughead.  Yes yes, of course I would because #Jughead Stan but also - hear me out! - because they rang so emotionally true for me, and showed the difference between still-adolescent Jughead and the now-more-adult Jughead.
First, the one to Tabitha:  These mushrooms make people say & do what they really think, apparently, so Jughead hit on Tabitha because he’s really attracted to her, and his non-defensive, roll-with-punches adult-self apologizing in this abashed but not self-hating way, and the way he is still hopeful that he stands a chance, was lovely.
The weepy, upset voicemail to Betty was expert fan service for the Jughead Stans, but it was thrilling for everyone else too if  the HUGE amount of chatter about it is anything to go by. (Not all thrills are pleasant).   I think it’s because there was a lot of truth packed into both his voicemail and her reaction (while high, but again, the mushrooms make you tell your truth).
Truth 1:  It’s important to express yourself when you’re upset.  Otherwise it comes bursting out at the wrong time, like pus from a festering wound, in a way that helps no one and may hurt you the most.  Truth 2:  Having an ex hung up on you is no fun.   Truth 3: Being confronted with an utterance like, I regret THE ENTIRE time I’ve known you, can make you lose perspective, as in, Betty playing that voicemail isn’t a serve on anyone other than herself and Jughead, together, and that’s why the kind Tabitha won’t bring it up again.
There is SO MUCH discourse about that word “bitch” and a lot of it is very well argued, but I feel no urge to pick a side. What *I* have to say about that is, Jughead using that word in that way with that tone definitively marked an end of Bughead 1.0.  If there’s going to be a Bughead 2.0, it’s going to have to be really different.
5.   I love the character set ups for Reggie and Fangs. Fangs first - is this guy like the world’s most perfect ex boyfriend or what? Fangs is infinitely kind to Kevin.  And Reggie - he’s abused by his dad but he is also loyal to his dad, working for “a Lodge” which he doesn’t actually seem to like in the little that he says about it, to ‘pay off’ his Dad’s debt.   I like the adult that Reggie has become.  “This isn’t high school.”   His calm “Nah, the bad guys pay better” felt like a breath of fresh bracing cynical air but then the actor also managed to push my But I Can Fix Him buttons so kudos, to you, good sir.
3 Things to Think About
a)Veronica is told it's the DIVORCE that is making Archie not want sex but please recall that the Riverdale High School is decimated and Archie is in the process of putting his genitals  - oops sorry - THE BUILDING back together.  He doesn't have a libido without the Riverdale High School building. I've been telling you.
b)Tabitha voluntarily enters into an agreement to lie (by omission) to Jughead about the manuscript handover to Jessica and the playing of the voicemail message. She doesn't know this yet but so far a rule of Riverdale is that you must not lie to Jughead or bad things happen. Interested to see if the rule still holds for Adult Jughead.
c) The show is very much doubling down on the fact that they think using other people’s lives as fiction is absolutely unforgivable.  Riverdale absolutely hates drug dealers (which is why the Serpents are alcohol runners, and kicked out drug dealers) and yet even though Jessica is totally a drug dealer that Betty Cooper fake-FBI knows is a drug dealer, AND  SHE NON CONSENSUALLY DRUGGED TWO WOMEN WHO SAID NO ALREADY, but the fact that she didn’t want her life used in a fictional outlet trumps literally everything.

With your answer about wanting BH to scream and kiss I remember the episodes of One Tree Hill season 5 when they did a time jump. If you don’t know about this show, basically BAs think Peyton is Betty and Lucas is Archie even when they have nothing in common relationship wise, specially when we get to the time jump, but anyways. They project those delusions into endgame couples with remotely similar archetypes. Peyton and Lucas broke up when they were going to college (he proposed and she said no) and Lucas and Brooke (Peyton’s friend) dated but he cheated on her with Peyton (that’s the only thing BAs can draw from it even when both of their relationships were significantly different and actually well developed not just used as trauma value). So, time jump after 5 years. Lucas is a writer and he published a book about his love for Peyton and invited her to the book signing but she didn’t show up (except she did but then turned around but that was a plot twist) – sounds familiar? So Lucas is in a committed relationship and actually will get married but Peyton shows up to town and changes everything because he is obviously still in love with her and they gave them jealousy, pinning and this amazing scenes when they are yelling at each other and she confesses she brought ever single copy of his book when she saw it.
These are the scenes: https://youtu.be/xW6C9Ea37yY and https://youtu.be/W-KzCtiyB-M AND THIS https://youtu.be/72PAqwMOpQI (I recommend you watch the scenes).
Riverdale will never master this level of writing because the show is so boring now and they had all the material to make memorable and dramatic scenes for BH with the whole book, voicemail and just everything but refused to do it. On OTH, they even had Peyton finally read the book almost at the end of the season (it was Lucas ex fiancé that gave it to her) like the material was there for Riverdale and nothing… the characters are emotionless and drama free in the most unrealistic way. Nothing about them on season 5 was cathartic.
Oh anon, I was never an addict, but I've seen OTH. I am familiar with the Lucas/Peyton/Brooke triangle but I always though Lucas was kind of trash.
I hope in the future, Bughead will be the Naley of Riverdale. Right now they're skewing towards Lucas/Peyton/Brooke but before they were very Naley...the steady couple to their friends' drama and while they had issues, they were couple issues that they soon resolved.
Can we get back to that please? Because dragging this out is hella boring.

This whole discussion is pointless, of course we were going to get some angst, that’s the point of the voicemail storyline for bughead. There’s a long way of rebuilding their relationship and their trust.
Trust the process, not the writers, they suck.
Without the voicemail bughead would’ve been back together at the beginning of the season. Even if their break up was a mess they love each other. There had to be a reason why they didn’t keep in touch, or even try to be together after college.
There’s no bad guy/good guy here. They both made mistakes and hurt each other. The reason why all of this is happening is because both of them left things unsaid when they broke up.
No one deserves the actions of the other, they are complex human beings who are allowed to act their feelings.
Yes, Betty cheated, but she came clean about the kiss, and apologized and even dealt with the consequences, she lost her boyfriend and her friend.
Let’s not forget Archie cheated too, but ginger Judas has his girl back and his friends too, even when he was encouraging Betty to see each other behind V and J backs and “try” to be together, HE EVEN WROTE A SONG FOR BETTY AND LET VERONICA SING THAT SONG IN FRONT OF EVERYONE. But no one is treating him the way Betty is being treated, let’s not forget she stopped the situation, not the other way round.
Of course Jughead didn’t deserve to be cheated but after learning about the kiss they both drifted apart. We never knew what he had to say. He isolated himself. And she knew what she did was wrong so she respected it, and gave him space. Of course he had every right to feel bad and angry and say something. And it’s valid if she feels hurt by his words, I mean it was bad enough to make her think he didn’t want anything to do with her anymore . Like I said they both hurt each other and this is mostly because they never talked about it when they had to. All this time that has passed is making everything more complicated.
Also we don’t know If they kept in touch and talk regularly or this call that ends in the voicemail came out of him being drunk or high or both, after a couple years of not talking to each other. Let’s not forget that everything he said was under the influence so there’s no way he would say those things sober without feeling guilty afterwards. Also the fact that when she mentioned the voicemail to him he acted so confused its most likely he doesn’t even remember what he said, but said it wasn’t his intention.
In conclusion they both made mistakes, and they will grow out of this to get back stronger, they love each other.
Also even after the voicemail he was the first person she opened up to about Polly and her family and he was ready to leave from work and help her.
Sorry for this big post/rant but this nonsense discussion and misogynistic takes are getting a annoying. Besides this whole argument comes out from pure speculation.

Dear Riverdale Writers Nightmare Children
The content of the voicemail is irrelevant in regard to Bughead not getting in contact, if the timeline doesn’t support it.
Honestly, this is 2021 all over again ...
