Not quite finished yet, but let's start the new year with a slayin'
Brother Falk Schwarzwald, youngest Imperial Fists Company Champion in five hundred years. He earned several commendations during two tours with the Ordo Xenos' Deathwatch Chapter, under the command of Lord Inquisitor Marion herself. There, he became extraordinarily skilled at executing the hated greenskin, leading assassination raids against Ork Warbosses. He also became close friends with several squadmates, a smiling Raven Guard who gifted him a white Aquila Rosary, a kind-hearted Space Wolf who taught him to always keep a loaded pistol close, and a young Black Templar named Mordred who showed him the value of chaining his sword to his wrist, explaining simply; " You can't loose your weapon if you can't loose your weapon... cousin."

More of "The Poisoned Chalice"
Arthur: Do you want to see what you'll be wearing tonight?
Merlin: (thinking) Not those ridiculous ceremonial robes again! (says) My clothes, obviously.
Arthur: (smiling brightly) No, the official ceremonial robes of the servants of Camelot!
Merlin:(fakes excitament) Oh, I can't wait to see them.
Arthur: (pulls out a very nice and elegant robes, nothing to do with the buffon custome he wore in his timeline)
Merlin: (mouth open) You... you can't be serious.
Arthur: (frowns in confusion) You don't like them?
Merlin: Are you kidding? Arthur, they're gorgeous! They look more like noble's clothes than servant's clothes. I... I can't use that.
Arthur: Too bad. You're using them. (throws robes at Merlin, who catches them in reflex) In fact, Keep them. They're now yours.
Merlin: What?! Wait! Arthur-
Arthur: You're welcome (leaves before Merlin can't give him the clothes back)
Merlin: (in shock for a few seconds, but then puts the robes on and smiles) Uhm, they fit perfectly. Just like the other ones. (processing) Wait, how did he know my measures? 😧
Time skip. Just after the revelation the cup was poisoned.
Uther: (furious) Who dare to try to poison my son!
Merlin: (raises his voice) I know who did it!
Arthur: Merlin don't-
Merlin: (points at Nimueh) It was her! I saw her entering the room were the ceremonial goblets were at night!
Nimueh: (surprised pikachu face)
Uther: (suspicious, to Bayard) Doesn't she work for you?
Bayard: (unsure) I don't recall her face.
Merlin: (mumbles a revelation spell to undo the glamour Nimueh put on herself)
Arthur: (subtly stands infront of him, so nobody sees Merlin's eyes turn gold, thinking) Has he always being this careless for gods' sake!
Uther: (livid, shouts) Nimueh! (to guards) Seize her!
Nimueh: (Runs)
Arthur: (tries to go after her)
Uther: (stops him) Don't. She's too dangerous.
Arthur: Do you know her? Who is she?
Uther: Nimueh. She's a very powerful sorcerer. No one you should mess with.
Arthur: (thinking) And yet you messed with her (turns to Merlin) Merlin, we have to-
Merlin: (already gone)
Arthur: Merlin! (thinking) He did not go into danger alone again! He did not just go to confront a powerful sorcerer all by himself. This motherfu- (shouts, between furious and concerned) Merlin! (leaves where the guards went)
Uther: Arthur! (sighs and turns to his knights) Go with him.
Meanwhile, somewhere in the woods.
Nimueh: (stops running to take a breath)
Merlin: (appears) I must say that was a really intelligent plan. Pretending to be some innocent maiden and trying to make me believe Bayard poisoned the goblet. But you won't fool me. (thinking) Not twice.
Nimueh: (laughts dryly) I understimated you. I'll give you that.(straightens up, smirking) Come now. We are too valuable to each other to be enemies.
Merlin: (dryly) I share nothing with you.
Nimueh: Don't you want Arthur to become king?
Merlin: You just tried to poison him!
Nimueh: No, I was trying to poison you. You keep interfiring in my plans when we have the same enemy. I have nothing against Arthur. It's Uther I want to destroy.
Merlin: By killing innocent people? Sorry if I'm not okay with that.
Nimueh: Sacrifices must be made for the greater good.
Merlin: You just seek revenge, not justice. Nothing justifies what you've done. (Steps forward) I'll make Arthur king when the time is right. But you won't see that day. (extends his hand) Astrice! (strikes her with light of energy)
Nimueh: (traps energy in her hand) Your childish tricks are useless against me, Merlin. It's a shame, you could've been a powerful sorcerer, perhaps, if you had the time, the training and the experience, but you are no more than a newly hatched chick that hasn't learned how to fly. I, on the other hand, have been practicing magic for decades. I'm a Priestess of the Old Religion. I am an opponent you could face but not defeat Forbearne! Akwele! (Throws fireball at him)
Merlin: (stops fireball midair without moving a finger)
Nimueh: (utterly confused) ... What? 😨
Merlin: You're right. Immature talent can't overcome decades of experience. But an experienced talent can. Akwele! (Throws fireball back with more force and bigger)
Nimueh: Scildan! (makes a invisible shield so the fire doesn't touch her) Forbairn ypile! (Makes a circle of fire around Merlin)
Merlin: Cume þoden! (Makes a whirlwind that blows the fire and then strikes Nimueh against a tree) Fire is not the only element you can work with, you know?
Nimueh: (smiles) Oh, I know. Gewican ge eorðe (makes a hole in the ground and Merlin falls there while he screams. Then she stands up and starts walking to the hole, limping a little, and says to herself, rubing her back) Oh, that hurt.
Merlin: (emerges floating in a piece of earth and stone, eyes golder than ever) This is going to hurt more. Eorðe, stanas, hiersumaþ me. Akwele! (Jumps from the rock and it goes to strike Nimueh)
Nimueh: Stanas tobrytan! (manages to break the rock into pieces but she's still hit by them and is severely injured)
Merlin: (stands over her with a somber expression)
Nimueh: (recoiling in fear, weakely) How...? How can this be? You shouldn't be this powerful! You manipulate magic as if you've been practicing it for a life time!
Merlin: (coldly) You don't have to know. (Starts to create a fireball in his hand, about to make the final blow)
Lancelot: (appearing in the distance, meters behind Merlin) Hey! What's happening?
Merlin: (the flame dies as well as the gold in his eyes and he turns around, wide eyed, whispering overcome with emotion) Lancelot?
Nimueh: (takes advantage Merlin is distracted and pulls out a dagger hidden in her leg)
Lancelot: Look out! (Runs to them)
Merlin: (moves away just in time so the dagger cuts his neck superficially)
Knight 1: (far away, but getting closer) I think I heard something!
Knight 2: (far away, but getting closer) This way!
Nimueh: (runs away as fast as she can with all her body hurting)
Lancelot: (goes to Merlin) Did she hurt you?
Merlin: I... (falls)
Lancelot: (catches him before he hits the ground) By the gods! She did! (Checks him, full panic mode)
Merlin: (thinking in Lancelot's arms, only able to move his eyes) No, she did not. The wound is barely a scratch but she put a paralyzing poison on the blade, the sneaky bitch. 😑
Lancelot: (sees Merlin's neck is bleeding, worried) There's so much blood.
Merlin: (Thinking) No, there isn't. 🙄 Honestly, Lancelot, have you seen a serious wound before? (Analysing his symptoms) Hum... It's not a letal one, the effects should go in an hour or so.
Lancelot: (checks his vital signs and sighs in releaf) He's still alive.(shaking Merlin) Hey! Can you hear me?!
Merlin: (Thinking) Yes I can! I just can't talk or move, damn it! 😠 I did miss you though 🥺. Why did we have to meet again like this? 😖
Arthur: (arrives with his knights) Merlin! (raises his sword, furious) Stay away from him!
Lancelot: (puts Merlin on the ground gently and steps back, hands up) I was just helping him! The girl. She did something to him. He's seriously hurt! He needs help!
Merlin: (thinking) No I'm not! I'm just... ugh, never mind 😒.
Arthur: (finally sees Lancelot's face and his features harden due to the resentment he feels towards the man he once considered a friend but then betrayed him by getting involved with his soon to be wife in his other timeline) Arrest him.
...
Before you ask why doesn't Arthur know Gwen was echanted and Lancelot was a shade that time if he's from the future, well the only one who could've told him that was Merlin and he was a tree so... And I don't recall Merlin ever mentioning any of this to Gaius. But even if he did, I think Gaius just focused on telling Arthur everything Merlin did for him with his magic, and the man is old, he could easily have forgotten to tell him a couple of things.

2024 Weeks 1-8 Reading List
My book picks for the next few weeks!
Tumblr media
The Constant Gardener - John Le Carre: "The novel opens in northern Kenya with the gruesome murder of Tessa Quayle -- young, beautiful, and dearly beloved to husband Justin. When Justin sets out on a personal odyssey to uncover the mystery of her death, what he finds could make him not only a suspect among his own colleagues, but a target for Tessa's killers as well."
The Bloody Chamber - Angela Carter: "Subversively dark and sensual versions of familiar fairy tales and legends like “Little Red Riding Hood,” “Bluebeard,” “Puss in Boots,” and “Beauty and the Beast,” steeped in the romantic trappings of the gothic tradition."
A Mother's Reckoning - Sue Klebold (not pictured): "On April 20, 1999, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold walked into Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado. For the last sixteen years, Sue Klebold, Dylan’s mother, has lived with the indescribable grief and shame of that day. She chronicles with unflinching honesty her journey as a mother trying to come to terms with the incomprehensible. "
Heart of Darkness - Joseph Conrad: "The story is narrated by Charles Marlow, recalling his obsessive quest to locate the ivory trader Kurtz, who has become ensconced deep in the jungle managing a remote outpost. As he ventures further and further down the Congo, Marlow finds himself and his surroundings become increasingly untethered."
The Pale Blue Eye - Louis Bayard: "At West Point Academy in 1830, the calm of an October evening is shattered by the discovery of a young cadet's body swinging from a rope. The next morning, an even greater horror comes to light. Someone has removed the dead man's heart. An ingenious tale of murder and revenge at West Point, featuring a retired detective and a young cadet named Edgar Allan Poe"
Between Two Fires - Christopher Buehlman: "The year is 1348. Thomas, a disgraced knight, has found a young girl alone in a dead Norman village. An orphan of the Black Death, and an almost unnerving picture of innocence, she tells Thomas that plague is only part of a larger cataclysm—that the fallen angels under Lucifer are rising in a second war on heaven, and that the world of men has fallen behind the lines of conflict."

I apologize for not posting in a while, as an apology allow me to introduce Baelaius Vex, Chapter Champion of the Heralds.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I hadn't really been able to find much on chapter champions within the blood angels lore, however with the release of the Bayard's Revenge model, I wanted to make an Emperor's champion look awesome in my collection as well. And if I'm being honest, I think I managed to do that pretty well. Although that chest piece was an absolute pain to customize, as the champion model is a tad bit bigger than first bourn size, and has a unique pose.
BUT HAIL TO THE ANGEL TITTY, I did it. He got the fancy artistic armor of the Angels of Baal.

Here is my entry for the @shatteredbrushawards I started work on it right after the announced Bayard’s Revenge but I didn’t think I would have the time to get that one done. I took quite a bit of time with the base and really tried to work outside my comfort zone with it. This also marks the first time that I have a solid photo taking setup. #blacktemplars40k #shatteredbrushawards #warhammercommunity #paintingwarhammer #hobby #minipainting #miniaturepainting #spacemarines #emperorschampion #primarismarines #warhammer40k #painting #warhammerpainting #drybrushing #artisopus https://www.instagram.com/p/Cl_pLM4OBNh/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Parvathirax V.S. Virago
Tumblr media
Blue Dragon by Sandara Tang
NPC: Parvathirax
Sailors tell tales of storms that come on faster than seems possible, of rain that comes down hard enough to flood the decks and lightning that seems almost malicious, and of a dragon whose very presence is enough to sink ships. This is the legacy of Parvathirax the Flood Bringer. - Leovold Marrow, scholar and maritime specialist for the Infinite Arcanum
The ancient blue dragon who once made her home among the mountains of the Stormblight Canyons is a well-known threat not just to those who trek too close to her home, but to seafarers as well. While her lair may be in the canyons, the oceans are her hunting grounds. Sailors speak of her in hushed tones whenever a storm seems to be moving just a little too fast, and many ships have met their end thanks to her scraping claws and electric maw.
Parvathirax’s fury only seems to have grown in the last century. Before, she would spend months, maybe even years, resting at her home in the Stormblight Canyons before resurfacing again. For the past one-hundred years though, the Flood Bringer has routinely terrorized every ocean and settlement within 10000 miles of her lair. It appears as if she is desperately searching for something or someone, but no one who encounters her has lived to tell of it.
The only place safe from this ancient blue dragon’s wrath appears to be the very place she used to call home. The storm over the Stormblight Canyons has almost entirely disappeared in her prolonged absence. Some scholars are even calling for a name change considering, with Parvathirax gone, the canyons actually get less rainfall than would be expected for the area.
Tumblr media
Ms. Orc- Last Stand by Bayard Wu
NPC: Virago
I first saw her at the pub in Svenali’s Retreat. She looked gorgeous! Hair curled, tusks shined, brows plucked, not what you normally see in the pub, so I knew I had to take my shot. But something was off. While she may appear to be a young woman, there was something about her eyes that spoke of age. Was it wisdom? Or trauma? Or was she just tired of me talking to her? Either way, I didn’t buy her another drink after the look she gave me. – Polanch Trichavik, exasperated tavern goer.
Virago was a talented wizard from a very young age. The nomadic orc tribe she grew up in scraped together as much gold as possible to send her to be trained at Vanistrom Academy when she was just 12. It didn’t take long for her to rise up through the ranks and become a prodigy at the academy. She had a knack for spellcraft, particularly transmutation, and was easily able to alter formulas and manipulate circles in order to improve effects or even create brand new ones.
After graduating from the academy at 28, Virago worked briefly as a researcher before feeling the pull of homesickness. She left the academic life behind and returned to her tribe to act as an advisor and a teacher. While she was away though, the land had turned against her tribe. What was once lush plains full of game and food had been replaced by cracked dirt and a starving people.
Knowing that something had to be done to save her tribe, Virago convinced them to travel with her to a new land she had found during her time as a researcher. It had everything her people could need, game to hunt, fruit to forage, an abundance of water, and, best of all, no other people. The only downside were the blue dragons that made their home among the mountains.
It took two years of prolonged travel through unknown wilderness, but Virago’s tribe finally made it to the Stormblight Canyons. They thrived in this new land for over a decade before they drew the attention of Parvathirax. One of their hunting bands encountered a young blue dragon while chasing down a giant elk. Instead of allowing the creature to steal their catch, one of the young hunters thrust her spear into its belly. Its cry brought the wrath of Parvathirax down upon the whole tribe.
In less than a week, every last orc had been hunted down and killed. Every orc except Virago. She wept with fury and guilt at what had befallen her family. She swore, if it was the last thing she did, she would get her revenge.
It took years of research and contact with an entity not of this plane, but Virago was able to craft a spell that would punish Parvathirax for what the dragon had done to her family. The orc woman set up the ritual site atop a mesa in the canyons. She carved sigils into the stone, sacrificed creatures, spilt her own blood, and chanted for a solid seven days before a blinding flash of lightning told her that it had been a success. All of Parvathirax’s children were blinded and their wings would all wither and slowly fall away. The same would be true for any children she may have in the future.
This was just over one-hundred years ago.
Since then, Virago has used her transmutation magic both to hide herself and to extend her lifespan. Parvathirax has been searching for her for the past century, all the while she has been hidden in canyons, changing her body every few decades. Her newest form most resembles her original. An orc woman with yellow-green skin, flowing brown hair, and cheek bones that could stab a man. Despite appearing to be about twenty-three, her eyes are still unchanged. They bear the markings of someone who has lost everything, of someone who has obtained vengeance, and of someone who has lived much longer than she should have.

This Moment
Written for @time-is-fading for the @plancesecretsanta! The ask was for fluffy and fun! I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed writing it!
The first to arrive for an all-Paladin get-away in the mountains over the holidays, Pidge and Lance find themselves in for the long haul when a blizzard strikes. Without power, they'll have to make due - its not as if they've never cuddled before.
Read on Ao3
~~~~~
Arms numb and muscles strained with the weight he holds both in his hands and his heart, Lance leans his shoulder into the door, one foot anchored a step below the other. It swings open and he staggers into the kitchen, letting out a terrified squeak as he nearly drops the precious - and very heavy - portable generator.
He nearly trips over a rug in the near complete darkness. With a final heave, he lifts the precious machine onto the kitchen table, wrinkling the perfectly ironed tablecloth. Dust plumes all around him, built up from the years the machine has spent in storage. Lance coughs, waving his arms - that honestly feel like wet noodles at this point after the heavy lifting - in a futile attempt to stop any more dusty particles from reaching his throat.
Short strides and light feet scamper into the kitchen. Lance squints in between coughs just in time watch Pidge’s eyes light up in delight when she crosses the threshold, the lights of the Christmas Tree on the front of her sweater blinking on and off through the dust like Rudolph’s nose on that foggy night, giving off just enough light to see in front of them in the cold, dark kitchen.
“You found it!” she exclaims, jogging over to him. Pidge wastes no time in rolling up the sleeves of her sweater, examining the generator for functionality as she grips it possessively. Her face contorts, nose wrinkling as she begins to sort out whatever problem she’s found. Lance’s heart does a little leap, finding the action so quintessentially Pidge and therefore endearing and adorable.
He coughs, the dust still scratchy against his throat. “Does it have enough juice?” he wheezes.
Pidge frowns, eyes still on the machine. “It’s been over a decade since I was last here with Mom, Dad, and Matt,” she admits. “Only one way to find out how deteriorated it is.”
Lance whines at the thought of cold showers and canned food for a week (or longer, who knew how long this snowstorm would last). To distract himself from the possibility of such a dismal future, he watches her delicate fingers dig into a mess of cables. They’re so tiny, fitting into small spaces and rearranging components with calming ease. Speckles of dust and grime fall onto them, though Pidge pays it no mind, focused as she is on her task. Dirty or not, he has the sudden, inexplicable need to hold them - but he does not reach. Pidge’s work is far too important to interrupt right now, just as imperative as any mission they went on as Paladins.
Licking his lips, Lance frets. Had he sized the ring too large?
With a grunt, Pidge flips the switch and to Lance's extreme relief, it hums to life.
“Oh thank goodness,” Lance sighs, slumping to a squat, arms hanging onto the table. “I don’t think I could have lived with a cold shower.”
The window pane above the kitchen sink rattles, strong winds swirling both the falling and newfallen snow. Though the snow shines brightly in the dark of the evening, he still can’t see Pidge’s car, parked on the gravel road only feet from the cabin.
Pidge switches the generator off. “Dad must have modified this one if it’s lasted this long.” Gently, she brushes off some lingering dust around the manufacturer label. “We’d better save power regardless, I’m still not sure how much is left in this one.” She lifts her eyes to the window, mouth a thin, concerned line. “I don’t think the others are going to be able to make it in time for Christmas.”
Disappointment laces her tone, and Lance is upset too. They all needed this break from their various duties across the universe. Lance had genuinely been looking forward to it being just the seven of them again, recounting the insanity of the beginning of their tenure as team Voltron. It was Matt who’d reminded them of the Holt family cabin in the mountains, and at the time it seemed like an idyllic getaway from media and duty alike.
Except now it would just be him and Pidge in a near powerless cabin in the middle of nowhere until the blizzard subsided, both simmering with frustration at the weather and all traces of joyous holiday spirit gone.
Lance drops a hand into his jacket pocket, fingering the small black box. He’d missed his chance on the car ride here. He’d missed his chance after the Galaxy Garrison holiday party and during numerous lunchtime walks on the Galaxy Garrison grounds. No opportunity had seemed right. Maybe the universe was telling him now to just suck it up and do it - gifting him this unplanned time alone with her. It wasn’t as if they hadn’t discussed getting married so many times before - he and Pidge were ready (or at least as ready as they thought they could be).
But it seems wrong to do so here, during a winter storm, when he could take her to see the sun set on the waters of Varadero Beach, dining with spaghetti, garlic knots, and peanut butter cookies for dessert.
If he could just be patient a little longer and create the perfect moment for her. It’s the very least Pidge deserves.
He looks up at her, flashing his most flirtatious and cheesy of grins. One thing he can do at the moment, is lift their spirits and make the most of this and make up for the fact he won’t have the others to help keep things festive. “Well, just you and me isn't so bad, Pidge. Alone in a cabin, cut off from the rest of the universe.” He waggles his eyebrows to sell it further. “I can think of a few things to keep us entertained.”
Pidge’s face alone looks as if it could heat the entire cabin for the whole two weeks they'd be here. It entertains him for all of three seconds before she grins wickedly right back at him, his face falling in slight fear that she might actually be willing to indulge in the innuendo.
“You’re right, Lance,” she says with a sly smirk. “Alone in the middle of the mountains and a snowstorm that won’t let us see what kind of spooky creatures are out there.” She shrugs smugly. “We'll do what the old song says and tell a bunch of scary ghost stories. A brilliant idea to keep us entertained,” she continues, with a smile that tells Lance she knew exactly what he meant and pulled the rug from under him on purpose. “I’ll grab the blankets and we can camp out in the living room.”
She splits off and Lance falls to his back on the kitchen floor, just now finding the breath he’d been holding. He’d nearly ruined something else that he wanted to be absolutely perfect and romantic on their wedding night over a joke to keep her mind off the lack of the rest of the team.
She’d quiznaking had him in the first half.
He loves her so much.
Telling stories was a great idea, though, he decides as he arranges the throw pillows on the floor of the living room in front of the crackling stone fireplace and Pidge drops the blankets and pillows gathered from the bedrooms on top of them. Telling the absolute scariest story will surely have Pidge clinging and cuddling against him! The perfect opportunity to use his arm-over-the-shoulder technique - tested and perfected years before he arrived at the Galaxy Garrison for his first class. Just the thought of cuddling with Pidge makes his toes tingle despite his fuzzy wool socks, eager to bask in the known warmth of her arms wrapped around him.
The promise of cuddling perks him up and clears his senses like a brisk December morning. It feels festive now, and Pidge's sweater looks right at home with shiny bobbles on the Christmas tree - illuminated by the fire on the wood - the silver tinsel strewn about the shelf lining the room, and the folding table ready to hold his mother's famous punch recipe that he can't wait for Pidge to try and pair with whatever delectable snacks Hunk brings. Just being among the trappings of the holiday, doing something fun with Pidge, makes his heart feel much lighter.
Like a well-oiled machine, honed from years of sharing the Voltron bond and heightened in the years of courtship, the two of them layer the pillows together between the two pronged corner couch and loveseat and drape bed sheets on top of them for a roof. They squish as many comforters and blankets and pillows inside the three-sided fort as they possibly can, making a cozy tent for two. It could be a scene from the outside, with this tent a recreation of a cabin and the evergreen by the large window filled with ornaments and topped with a star just a normal part of the forest. The only thing needed was the seven of them participating in the most epic snowball fight known to the universe - where he’d finally enact his sweet revenge on Keith for the hit in the Squishy Asteroid Fight.
But, he realizes as he eyes Pidge making sure their bedsheet roof was secure, he could practice.
With a childhood full of playing baseball in the schoolyard behind him, Lance launches the circle shaped throw pillow at Pidge. It hits her square in the back of the head and falls limply to the ground. Pidge straightens from being bent over to her full height. Then, just as fast as if it were her bayard, Pidge lunges at him with a body pillow - the spark of competition the last thing he sees before nothing but white fluff.
“I had an older brother too, Lance,” Pidge says devilishly. “I know how to pillow fight.”
All nervousness surrounding the ring in his pocket forgotten, Lance picks a pillow up off the floor. “You had one sibling, I had four,” he retorts. “I have the stamina and the awareness to win this one. And,” he adds, pointing smugly to her sweater, “mine doesn’t light up like a target.”
Still, fighting a group wasn’t the same as fighting one-on-one, as Lance found out. Pidge was just as fierce (and far more used to hand-to-hand combat than he) as he remembered during training sessions on the Castle. Not that he minded in the least, the distraction was welcome.
Lance lands on his side first, head resting on the pillow he’s designated as his own near the back of the fort, breath heavy, but laugher from the utter silliness they’d partaken in not far from his lips. His heart beats with a delighted trill as Pidge falls to her side next to him, nearly bouncing on top of the layers of pillows and blankets, mouth formed into a wide, contented smile
She opens her eyes, their faces so close together it would be so easy to kiss her.
So he does, a simple peck right on her nose.
“I love you,” he tells her.
Pidge snorts at his action, her mouth curling up adorably in amusement. “What brought this on? The brilliance to conserve energy by making a pillow fort?”
“That too,” Lance admits with a laugh. “Can’t I just say it for no particular reason?”
Thick brown eyebrows raise in curiosity. “What are you buttering me up for, Lance?”
“Nothing!” he squeaks. His hands freeze in a heart-stopping moment; quiznak, what if she’s expecting a proposal on this trip? Will he let her down by not offering her the ring in his pocket? The howling wind outside is hardly the perfect atmosphere compared to the sun-kissed ocean waves. “I’m just… glad if I had to be stuck anywhere during the holidays, it’s with you. You make me feel like I can do anything.”
Rather than a sickeningly sweet and teasing ‘aww’, Pidge’s gaze falls to the pillow laden floor, her grip tightening on the edge of a quilt. “That means more than you know,” she says somberly. “You’re my best friend, Lance. I gave you the cold shoulder so many times back when we were a simulator crew and you never gave up trying to hang out.” A small, gentle smile forms on her face as she looks back up at him. “You - You’re all family to me. Shiro and Keith, Coran and Allura, Hunk and..” she meets his gaze and he can’t breathe or look away. “And you.”
Warmth overwhelms his heart. He’d known, of course, his persistence had paid off to gain Pidge’s friendship, but to hear it from her makes him happy beyond belief.
He never can - or wants to - replace that familial feeling between the Paladins but… he also wants to be a family with her - just the two of them.
“You definitely had us all fooled for a while,” he admits. Slowly, he curls his fingers and fully encases her hand in his free one. “But I’m forever grateful I got the chance to know the real Pidge.”
And he means it. The more he sinks into the soft blankets in comfort, the more he just wants to stay like this forever. To take Pidge into his arms and hold her through the entire storm.
Pidge squeezes the hand that holds hers. “Me too - about the real Lance,” she says laying relaxed among the blankets with eyes that are full of purpose. “Marry me.”
Lance's face is stretched so wide and like an idiot it takes him several seconds to realize what had just happened.
He shoots up, head making a dent in the bedsheet ceiling. “What?” he squeaks. “Wait. Hold on. I was going to propose to you!”
As he witnesses the myriad of emotions that pass across Pidge’s face, from fear to relief to the audacity to outright laugh at him, Lance resigns that he won’t be able to give Pidge the perfect proposal on the beach.
But he loves Pidge and as long as she says yes that is all that matters in the end. He can make up for a low-key proposal with a grand wedding.
“I figured, after our tenth talk about what to name our kids and all,” Pidge says, then rolls onto her back and chuckles a few more times at his expense.
Lance huffs. “It’s not funny, Pidge. I had it all planned. We’d go to the beach, watch the sunset and have the most perfect romantic candlelit dinner! My mom was even going to cook! You know how delicious her cooking is!” He digs into his pocket and pulls out the black box. “I even had this ready!”
Pidge stops laughing the instant she lays eyes on the box, her mouth agape in pure surprise as she slowly sits up. “You… already have the ring. You actually have it. Here. Right now.”
At Pidge’s disbelief, Lance’s own jaw drops. Planned or not, this was happening right here, right now. He clears his throat and shifts to his knees, opening the box and offering it out to Pidge. The band is green and silver with seven tiny diamonds set as low as possible - as much of a sacrifice between Pidge’s desire for nothing too flashy, easy to work with in the lab, and Lance’s desire to give her everything.
Now that the ring is out, Pidge viewing it… there is no doubt in Lance’s mind that this is the right moment.
“I’ve had it for a while,” he admits. “I’ve always wanted to give the girl I marry the most perfect and romantic proposal and… this isn’t it, but, I love you, Pidge,” he says with a fluttering heart that he hopes reflects in his smile. “I’d be more than happy to share my life with you.”
In awe, Pidge takes the ring out of the box with shaking hands, inspecting it thoroughly, still in a wave of disbelief. “I - I…”
Now it’s his turn to worry about rejection. A thousand terrible scenarios run through his mind - that Pidge hates the ring or worse, that she has second thoughts about this level of commitment. Lance knows he has none, and if he has to wait for years for her to be ready he will.
Even if - his heart thumps painfully - if she never does.
He frowns. “Are you okay, Pidge?”
She nods. She nods furiously, tears pricking at her eyes. “My heart was yours first.” With the skills of a ninja she swiftly drapes her arms around his neck, head resting on his shoulder. “Absolutely, yes.”
Lance knows she answers both of his questions. Joy in his heart and butterflies dissipating from his stomach, he takes her into the closest of hugs and enjoys the comfort of being able to hold his fiancee.
It may not have been the perfect proposal he’d envisioned, but all the same he’s overcome with all the happiness in the universe and an urge to do something. He flops back down onto their pillow-bed and laughs as Pidge both shrieks and giggles in delight when he takes her with him, kicking at him playfully and futility.
Her breath surrounds his senses and he doesn’t even mind taking a whiff of the salami she’d had for lunch. Just as their arms and legs are tangled together, their noses bump roughly. Lance snorts and chuckles as Pidge curls into his chest, still giggling softly. His lips are already on her forehead, so he takes the opportunity to kiss her. Once for their engagement, twice for how thankful he is for her company snowed-in, and three times for how much he loves her.
A flash of light and a crack of thunder tells him that the intensity of the storm won’t be diminishing anytime soon. And that’s okay by him, so long as he can stay like this.
Pidge’s humorous noises still to a sigh and she makes no move to leave his arms, instead taking a fistful of his sweater in her hands and snuggling closer. “You know, I’m kind of glad the storm interrupted our plans,” she hums. “Otherwise you might still be planning for that perfect moment.”
“You’re right, as usual,” Lance concedes. He doesn’t much care to be shown up, not when this outcome is a win for him too. What he’s not going to tell her, is that what was once a grand proposal, is now going to be the best and most romantic first anniversary date.
He grins into her hair, content as he equates the warmth of the beach to the warmth of her arms and the blankets.
“So how about those ghost stories?” he reminds her as mischievousness builds in his heart. Now that they’re engaged, he has even more reason to perfect his protective cuddling of Pidge. Because they have their whole lives together to look forward to now, and he’s certain there will be moments where Pidge will want the weight of his arms around her to both comfort her when she’s sad and protect her when she’s scared.
Pidge shifts to her back, head resting easy on her pillow as she gives him a smug smile. “You’re on,” she tells him as he leans back into his own pillow, staying on his side so he can keep his arms wrapped around the one of her closest to him. “Ever hear about Yeti around this area?” The confident glint in her eyes sends his heart pounding, knowing this was going to be a good one. Pidge never did things halfway.
“A local legend, huh?” Lance grins, completely sure he’ll weather this one. It’s not like any of these things were real. “I’m all ears, Pidge. Try me.” After knowing her story, he’ll be able to one-up her with one of his own and they’ll cuddle under the covers in their little tent with the warmth of each other. They’ll be able to save the generator for a nice hot shower in the morning - or whenever they thought it was morning. The blizzard will make it difficult to tell.
And Lance had no intention of leaving their little tent to check. By the vice grip Pidge had on his sweater as she begins her story, neither did she.
Keith & pidge
Pidge was tiny.
She was. It was just a fact. Lance was lanky, Shiro was buff and Pidge was tiny.
But the thing was Keith never truly realized just how small she was until he was hugging her close to his chest, his whole body wrapped around her as flames erupted everywhere around them.
The thing was, Keith wasn’t scared. Nope. He was downright annoyed.
This was supposed to be the easiest mission ever.
Get into the abandoned galran base, figure out what had chased the galra away from this sector, and leave.
A two person job. Pidge was supposed to hack into the servers and download the security cameras’ feed while Keith watched her back. Simple.
But then the ambush happened.
It was so stupid. The base had been conquered by pirates weeks ago, and when they found out voltron was planning to visit, they placed boobytraps everywhere, the traps being either tiny explosives, toxic gas or shockers (Keith had stepped on one, but the armour had thankfully stopped most of the electric current). Then they hid and waited.
It was a trap. And they had fallen right into it.
He scolded himself for not foreseeing it as he closed the door, still hearing the pirates shouting and jeering from the other side pounding at the door.
They had tried to contact the other the moment they realized their mistake, but something was blocking the signal.
Panting with his hands on his knees, he looked at Pidge, who was already working on the computer
“Now what?”
“I’m going to try to override every boobytrap from here, so that the gas ones all go off simultaneously”
After a few seconds she groaned in frustration
“What?”
“Every single trap has an access code, a 20 digit password, I would need to hack every trap, one at a time, in order to set them off” a bang from the door cut her off “and we don’t have that kind of time”
Keith thought for a second
“What if you overload the system entirely?”
She frowned “that would make the traps explode. We would basically be turning the entire base into a bomb”
“Which takes care of our pirate problem. We’ll call our lions, have them wait for us and once you overload the system, we’ll get out”
Pidge frowned as she tapped at her forearm, making a 3D map of the base appear.
“We’re currently here” she pointed to a room at the east wing “the nearest exit is through here, two corridors ahead. We could, in theory, crawl through the vents, get out in this corridor and run to the hanger” she grinned at him “this could actually work”
She turned to the computer “I’ll make a timer. We have 10 ticks to get to the hanger”
“What about the video feeds we came for?”
“The pirates deleted it all, this was pointless”
“Great” he took a deep breath “okay let’s go”
Pidge set the timer, and they ran to the vent on the wall. The moment Keith started crawling, he heard the door that led to the room slammed open. Confused shouts followed by a few animalistic grunts were heard, and the aliens ran out of the room.
Keith felt offended that they had been fooled by these idiots.
Everything seemed to be going according to plan.
Until it all came crashing down.
“One dobos left!” Pidge told him as they sneaked through the second corridor. Keith sighed in relief as the hangar door appeared as they rounded the corner. But then from the corner of his eye his saw movement, and one of the pirates raised their gun. He was pointing at Pidge. He heard the sound of a blaster charging.
Keith didn’t have time to think. He lunged and tackled the girl to the ground, pushing the girl against his chest.
For a moment, he didn’t feel anything, and he felt relief pour down his body. Pidge reacted faster than him and sat up, pointed her bayard at the pirate and a second later, the criminal was on the ground, unconscious (or dead) from the electric current of Pidge’s grappling hook
She looked at the timer “33 ticks”
Keith sat up and immediately grunted, biting back a scream. He looked at his side and immediately wished he hadn’t.
The blast from the gun had melted the thick undersuit and blood was steadily dripping to the floor. The few seconds he had been laying on the floor, a steady pool of blood had already former around him.
Pidge must have noticed too, because she went pale
“Oh shit”
But nevertheless, Keith stood up, swaying on the spot. Pidge immediately pulled his arm around her shoulders, supporting his weight.
“Ten ticks”
“We’re not gonna make it”
She didn’t respond. They stumbled their way towards the hangar door, already opened. 20 feet… 10 feet…
The timer beeped. Keith looked behind them at the wall of fire and blast of hot air that was coming their way.
He grabbed Pidge and hugged her close, as he had done barely a minute ago.
Please he wasn’t sure who he was praying at let Pidge be okay.
The heat seared his skin, and his injury was agony. He couldn’t breathe, he was suffocating, his was wound screaming in pain, his arms still tight around Pidge.
When he opened his eyes again, he was laying down on his side, surrounded by fire, and he thought of his father, about how he was going to die the same way he had.
And then Pidge was there, struggling in his arms.
“We have to go!” She shouted. He stared at her. She looked scared but determinate as she struggled to get him to sit up.
He struggled to stand up and she ended up half dragging him to where the green lion was waiting, her golden eyes glinting as she opened her mouth.
Then he passed out.
He came to when a hand shook his shoulder.
“C’mon bud, wake up” he groaned
“S’ro?”
“That’s right buddy. I’m gonna pick you up now, okay?”
Keith didn’t really feel like walking, so he nodded. Strong arms surrounded his back and the back of his knees and then he was being scooped up.
His side burned, and he buried his face in his brother’s shoulder to stifle the whine that rose from his throat.
“I know bud. Don’t fall asleep yet, okay?”
Too late.
He didn’t exactly fall asleep. He was in and out, seeing his surroundings in flashes.
They were on a hallway, and he was being carried by Shiro. His eyes closed
They entered the infirmary, and sound exploded, making him flinch and hide his face in his brother’s shoulder. He noticed Shiro wasn’t wearing his armour, but he was. Why? He couldn’t remember. His eyes closed on their own before he could figure it out.
He was sitting down on one of the cots, his head resting on Shiro’s shoulder as he helped Hunk manhandle him into one of the white suits. He didn’t even have the energy to be embarrassed. He let them maneuver him until some time later he was being scooped up in someone’s (probably Shiro’s) arms again and he was carried to the pods. His eyes rolled to the back of his head before he was placed into the cryopod.
He woke up, fully this time, when he started falling from the pod.
He scrambled to catch himself, but it wasn’t necessary because a pair of strong arms held him up, taking his weight as his sleep-added legs fully woke up.
“Hmmnnnggg”
The person holding him chuckled, and the sound vibrates on Shiro’s chest, pressed to his ear. It felt nice.
“You alright, Keith?”
“I hate pods”
“He’s fine then” another voice called, sounding happy but relieved.
Keith finally managed to stand on his own two feet, but Shiro stayed beside him with an arm around his waist to support him.
“What happened?”
“You were on a mission, remember?”
“No I-“
And then it all came back.
The mission. The ambush. The timer. The fire.
Pidge.
He suddenly stood up completely straight, his eyes searching frantically for something. Or someone
“Pidge” he said, looking up at Shiro “where’s Pidge?”
Shiro frowned “she’s in her room, bud. We sent her to sleep off the mision”
He had to check she was okey. He had to.
He made a run for it and was close to the door when and arm wrapped around his waist and pulled him back.
“You’re gonna make yourself pass out, man”
When had Hunk arrived?
“I have to-“
“I know” he said, and Keith had a feeling he did understand
“Just… take it easy, alright? You lost a lot of blood” he sounded kind of queasy when he said this, and Keith immediately felt guilty for worrying them. So he nodded, admitting he did feel tired, and let hunk walk him to the corridor.
They didn’t have to walk very far though.
Pidge came running from around the corner, and just sped up when he saw Hunk and Keith.
She barreled into Keith, but he was ready for it, and he wrapped his arms around her.
She was clinging to his neck, her legs wrapped around her waist. The added weight, made his knees buckle, and he landed on his knees, still refusing to let go. She stepped away first and Keith let her, but his hands stayed on her shoulders. He scanned her for injuries and found that she was okay, even though her eyes shone with tears.
“Never do that again” she sniffled, rubbing her right eye “You scared me half to death, you asshole”
He felt the ball of guilt tighten in his chest again
“Sorry”
“It’s fine” she sniffled again “But next time you try shielding me from a gun or an explosion, I’m kicking you where it hurts”
He huffed out a laugh “no promises”
“HE WHAT?!”
Shiro sounded mad, worried and alarme all at the same time. Keith's eyes widened
“You didn’t tell them?”
“Consider it revenge for getting hurt at my expense” she smiled at him.
“Thank you” she muttered a moment later “you saved my life”
“You saved mine” they smiled at each other.
“Alright” Hunk sounded close to tears as he hauled Keith to his feet “Let’s get some food into you before Shiro kills you”
Keith smiled as Hunk’s arm surrounded his shoulder and he was pulled close into his side. Pidge grabbed his hand and squeezed it. He squeezed back.
