Watching Through My Collection: Day 3/36

Hellraiser IV: Bloodline (1996)

Day 2 / Day 4

An inevitability of getting through this backlog of movies via random wheel is that any franchises in the list are gonna get shuffled out of order. So, here's the first one we got!

Luckily, I've already seen the first two Hellraiser movies so I know most of the lore already attached to Pinhead and the Cenobites, and any references to the third movie weren't blatant enough for me to notice, so this was still a pretty good watch.

There's so much to say about this movie...

Adam Scott's there! He plays a non-insubstantial part and gets to skin a woman and have really funny hair. I kinda wanted him to hang out for longer but he did eventually die, cause if you're willing to skin a person alive then you may get killed before the movie ends.

He also got to live 200 years without aging, so he was probably bored anyway.

The fact that this movie decided to cover 3 different generations of a family line was pretty neat, and having the same actor play his own descendants is one of my favorite tropes, so I was willing to forgive some of the lamer moments in the middle.

Obviously, since the movie opens in the future setting of 2127, and the first flashback goes to 1796 to when the Lament Configuration was first created, by the time the story gets to 1996 you know the stakes can only get so high.

Pinhead doesn't show up until the 1996 setting, really. Technically, he appeared in the beginning set in the future, but this is when you really get see him! When he does finally get to interact, he brings the elegance we all know and love him for. Even while being a catty bitch to the other Cenobite, Angelique, that's been the main antagonist up until then.

He even pets a dove and feeds it to his dog, he's amazing.

There is the most random character establishing conversation I have seen for some monster fodder in a movie to this day, though.

A pair of identical twin himbo night-security guards checking around the empty building the Cenobites are in talk about whether they'd fuck a transwoman.

While, yeah, this was 1996, we've all seen a 90's film where guys talk about whether they'd fuck a transwoman, I certainly did not expect it to get slipped into my Hellraiser movie.

Good news is; they would 👍

Honestly, the only things that really stuck out from the 1996 storyline was that conversation, Pinhead's dog, and a bit of plot explained about the final box to destroy the Cenobites involving lazers. The rest of the human conflict just can't suck you in when you know that the Cenobites don't take over the world (no one believes the Lament Configuration is dangerous in the future) and the kid survives because the bloodline needs to carry on in order for the future to even happen.

(The flat acting also doesn't help sell the arc. Best actor in there was the kid playing with his K'NEX. So relatable.)

Thankfully, once the movie gets back to the future it's all about that climax and hot Cenobite body horror goodness!!

Everyone looks amazing and Pinhead flexes his stuff a lot more, them all getting a turn to kill someone in a fun way. Angelique decapitates a guy via mirror magic, the dog gets a guy while he's hiding, the Taffy Twins separate and then fucking absorb a dude in between them, and while Pinhead doesn't get any kills at the end, he does get to chew the scenery and get blown the fuck up by the giant box space station they finally built right to kill the Cenobites.

Of the weird trend of sending horror icons to space around the turn of the millennia, this is my favorite by far. I cannot wait to be sad and disappointed at all the other movies that'll barely have anything to do with the Hellraiser story beyond Pinhead showing up.

Inmate 44671-E-8: Alastair Kirkland is the eldest of the Kirkland brothers. As they grew up, he set a terrible example for his brothers. He still gets himself in trouble but is slowly trying to better himself. He’s in the middle of a four year sentence for an armed B&E, where he also injured three officers while resisting arrest. Prison isn’t very fun but he’s learning to mellow out and control his inner rage. He tries to keep in contact with Arthur but he usually refuses to see him. Ali also tried to hire Art to defend him in court but he refused then too. Ali was prosecuted by Natalya Braginsky two years ago. Arthur sat in the public viewing area with a coat and hat on so he wouldn’t be recognized. Alastair has a girlfriend who he met through a prisoner dating site but when he gets out, he plans on dumping her and moving far, far away.

Peter Kirkland: Peter’s a freshman in highschool who’s been to juvie twice, both for assault. He thinks Arthur is a kiss-ass and he thinks his delinquent brothers are awesome. He goes and sees Alastair in prison every other week and calls him from home if Ali’s alllwed to have phone time. Arthur rents a car to drive up to his family’s house every month or so just for peter, to check in on him. Peter’s an ass though. Last time Art went to see him, he hotboxed Art’s rental car and left burn marks in the car seats...on purpose. Deep down, Peter is afraid of being sent to prison for real but he craves attention. So he acts out. He’s gonna get a taste of reality soon enough...cause once he turns 16 he can be tried as an adult...Uh oh. Arthur is very worried but he doesn’t show it, instead he just yells at Peter or lectures him endlessly with his lawyer talk. Lammmeeeeee

Łukasiewicz, the magician: Feliks ‘Ken Ka-Dazzle’ Łukasiewicz is a traveling magician who won an American talent television show. He travels around Europe and the Americas to perform his act with various circuses or (occasionally) a cirque show. He had his own show in Las Vegas for a summer and performed in another casino for a few nights in the fall while another act fell ill. Feliks was suspected of robbing and killing another magician! He hired defense attorney Herdarvey(did not spell that right lmaoooo) to defend him!! His case was all over the news and people still believe he committed that murder despite the judge and jury ruling him ‘Not Guilty’ after a gruesome full three day trial. Because Eliza defended him so greatly, Feliks pays the rent for her law firm and the rent for her house! He also sends her flowers and cards often despite her husband hating it.

Firefighter Oxernstina: Tino is a firefighter! I talked about him a bit before! He was a firefighter in Finland before moving to LA with his parents! He went though the fire academy there (again) and was quickly hired by the Los Angeles fire department! He was welcomed in without a hitch!! His coworkers love working with him. Tino loves his job too, he works seven nights a month and gets paid very nicely. He loves saving people, it just!!! Makes him feel so good. He met Berwald at a city worker event and married him about a year and a half later. They’ve been married for a little over six years now and they’ve got an adopted son, Oscar, from Sweden! Tino’s side job is coaching the highschool hockey teams! He loves those kids! Berwald comes to every match he can to be supportive. He also brings Oscar to hopefully spark an interest in hockey for him

Eduardo Sousa-Carriedo: Eduardo is Antonio’s step brother. The two do NOT get along but when they’re forced to go to a family gathering, they act very friendly. Eduardo is a private investigator who works out of San Francisco. He lives there but he isn’t around much, he spends a lot of time in Brazil working for big businessmen there. It’s all under the table of course! He makes a pretty penny doing that but he doesn’t live like a rich guy. He has an average house, a nice car...he flaunts his wealth subtly. Diamond earrings, expensive watches, custom briefcases, sleeve tattoos, designer sunglasses. That kind of stuff. He has a handful of clients in Los Angeles so he’s forced to go sometimes and avoids his brother like the plague. And speaking of avoiding, he also has his ex-wife to worry about. She isn’t really tbag important though. After their bitter divorce, she’s been after him trying to get more and more money. Ugh. What a pest. Eduardo plans on moving to Brazil eventually, disappearing without a trace so she can’t find him. That’s how badly he wants her out of his life.

Angelique Dieudonne: Angelique is a casino chain owner! She has multiple locations, the biggest being in Monaco, Vegas, LA, Madrid and NYC. She’s never in one place for too long, she hops locations constantly. Many believe that she’s hosting a huge money laundering scheme but no one talks. She’s practically untouchable. She’s got a team of lawyers, social media managers and advisors on her side. She strikes down videos about her, she refuses on-the-spot interviews, makes employees sign contracts to keep them quiet. All kinds of stuff!!! She’s very powerful. She buys out casinos in popular areas and makes them her own. Her casinos are large and glamorous! Casino goers are usually too busy being drunk and feeling like royalty to realize how much money they’re REALLY spending on games. But that’s all a part of her plan. The prosecutors have a blast talking conspiracy, Ivan gets especially heated about it. He can’t wait for her downfall and claims that he’ll throw a party when she goes to prison

Gianni Vargas: Feli and Lovi’s younger brother. He’s a highschool student who works at the shop with Feli on weekends! He is not allowed to go to work with Lovi because he’s ‘hazardous’ and ‘inattentive’...which may be true. He has little interest in Lovino’s job cause he thinks working with dead people is gross. He looks up to Feliciano though! He wants to be stylish and suave like him! He plans on going into art school after he graduates. He wishes he could drop out of highschool to work in the clothing store with Feliciano but that would never be allowed!!! He goes with Feli to deliver suits so he’s a familiar face at the prosecutors office!! Francis is especially kind to him when he comes around “Awww! There’s my favorite style icon!!” It’s embarrassing but he thinks that Francis dresses cool so he puts up with it. When he turns 18, Gianni’s gonna get his own custom suit from Feli and their grandpa!! Only four more months!! He dreams of his soon to be suit every night!! The fitted pants...the padded shoulders....the fancy buttons...oh boy!!

what are your favorite icons for each muse? (I don't actually know what this question means. So, I am curious to see how you will interpret it! lol)

In some fandoms, roleplayers use icons (i.e. small cropped images) when doing Tumblr RP. I’m not sure if that’s a relic from LiveJournal, where a single blog could have several avatar icons which could be changed between posts, but as I haven’t done much Tumblr RP - and especially not in a while - I don’t have any icons for my characters.

Instead, I’ll list the anime/game characters whom I could use as icons for my FF characters, whether due to their looks, personality - or sometimes a bit of both!

Cain: Ren Amaki (The Rising of the Shield Hero)

I like to think that Ren Amaki is pretty much what Cain would be like if he'd been given a sword and told that he was a hero a few years before his adventures actually began. They give me similar vibes, as vague as that might sound.

//Edit: In hindsight, Alto Saotome (whom I've gushed about separately) from Macross Frontier might be an even better option despite the different colour schemes.

Lumien: Julious (Angelique)

While Julious is quite a close match to Lumien when it comes to looks and colour scheme, their personalities are fairly different due to Julious being self-assured and somewhat stiff and Lumien being timid and a bit sensitive.

Storm: Doppo Kunikida (Bungou Stray Dogs)

Kunikida’s appearance bears (at least some) similarities to Storm’s (original) character design, and while Kunikida has no chill and Storm has a lot of chill, both of them have a strong moral code which others may consider naive.

Narangelel: Rei Ayanami (Neon Genesis Evangelion) & Zelgadis Greywords (Slayers)

Nara gets two characters because although Rei feels somewhat similar to Nara (acting rather quiet and subdued despite being a soldier), I haven’t actually watched enough Evangelion to make proper judgement. Zelgadis, on the other hand, is much more familiar to me; he acts differently and is male... but he was a notable source of inspiration for Nara’s looks, admittedly.

Merces: Allelujah Haptism (Gundam 00)

Very serious? Check. Backstory which involves questionable scientific shenanigans? Check. More or less considers himself a human weapon? Kind of check. They also look somewhat similar.

Haldswys: Faris Scherwitz (Final Fantasy V)

Haldswys was partly inspired by Faris, which can probably seen from her purplish hair colour and the pirate-related bits of her backstory (although Haldswys herself isn’t a pirate; her mother was).

Chaz: Haseo (.hack//G.U.)

In addition to somewhat similar hairstyle, both Chaz and Haseo can be considered whiny and snarky at times - and are capable of wielding double daggers. I could also imagine them sharing the same voice actor(s).

Missing: G’ilas, Sasameru, Brenda

G’ilas’s looks were created by playing with the character creator, and his personality simply combines traits from a few OCs and things my characters usually don’t have.

Sasameru started off being a Merces expy, believe it or not, and then went on to develop in a fairly different direction.

Brenda is/was... something of a self-insert, only with white hair because Red Mages in Final Fantasy I had white hair (and I like Red Mages a lot for Reasons(TM)).

Title: Dirty Little Secret Part 2

Characters: Chris Evans x black!reader

Summary: The reader attends Ace Comic-Con with Chris

Word Count: 1331

Being out in the public with Chris had been the best decision. Sure, there were some racists trolls and paparazzi would try to photograph you two all the time, but it wasn’t as bad as you thought it would be. Chris would shut down the haters and you both tried your best to keep your whereabouts a secret. The good definitely outweighed the bad.

You even attended Chris’s high school reunion, which you had a blast there. His old classmates wasted no time telling you embarrassing stories of Chris and you ate it up. Chris was glad to bring you to his reunion. People would think he would want to brag about his Hollywood life, but all he did was brag about you and how lucky he was.

Now you were standing offstage while Chris, Don, and Jeremy were answering questions for the Ace Comic-Con. Currently, the moderator was asking about the acrylic memes of himself that was taking over social media. You thought those memes were a gift from God, especially the one that went over Civil War.

“Yeah, my girlfriend showed me them. Well, she tried to. She was too busy crying over how funny they were. Our favorite one is the recap from Civil War.” Chris explained how he found out about his new makeovers.

Excited to hear about you, Angelique, directed her questioning to the topic of you. “Speaking of your girlfriend. You broke a lot of hearts when you two publicized your relationship at the Endgame premiere. How’s everything going with you two?”

Chris instantly blushed at the mention of you and you heard the whole crowd go ‘awww’. “Great. Everything’s great. Except she got mad at me for not warning her about Cap’s ending.” Everyone in the room laughed at that.

Don butted in. “I don’t know how you didn’t tell her. Have y’all seen that video of Y/N kicking MBJ’s butt in the boxing ring. I’m scared of her. All she would have to do is raise her voice and I’d be singing like a canary.” The crowd erupted into laughter once again.

Luckily, they were able to shift the questions from you and into other things. Angelique had just asked the men what their favorite fighting scene from all of the movies and Chris accidently cussed, which caused you to palm your face, and he immediately followed it up with his iconic line ‘Language.’

Cheadle got up to point to a child, “There’s a child right here.” As he and Renner went off stage, he pointed at you, “Even your girlfriend is disappointed in you!”

The moderator had the crowd chant to bring back Don and Jeremy onstage and they also cheered for you to join them. With enough coaxing from the pair and the crowd, all three of you joined the stage.

Since there were no extra seats on the stage, Chris pulled you into his lap and gave you a kiss, causing all the women and some men in the room to swoon.

“Welcome, Y/N. Since I already got these fine gentlemen’s answer, would you please like to tell us what’s your favorite fight from the MCU?”

Why did she ask you such a hard question? You probably had more than 5 favorite fights. In response you bit your nails and a sheepish look on your face, which made everyone laugh. “Oh my God, that’s so hard! There’s so many. Obviously, there’s Chris’s elevator fight, the airport fight, the Avengers last fight, the Endgame battle, the last fight in Infinity War, and the casino fight in Black Panther.”

Chris laughed at your enthusiasm; he knew how much of a Marvel fan you really were. “Babe, she asked for one fight not all of them.”

“Y’all see how mean he is. Hmph, that’s why Anthony is my favorite Captain America.” You elbowed your boyfriend in his not so soft stomach, but he still grunted in pain. “Anyway, before I was rudely interrupted,” you cut your eyes to Chris. “I’m gonna say my favorite fight has to be the casino fight in Black Panther and it all has to do with Dani throwing that wig! I actually bought a wig for that exact reason. I wore it when I was sparring with my trainer, and I whipped it off and threw it at him and I managed to take him down in my fastest time.”

Don looked at you in awe. “See this is why I love black women. Now, I just wanna see a bunch of wigs flying throughout a fight.”

After that the questions were directed towards Chris, Jeremy, and Don. You would give your input every so often and some questions would be directed towards you. A young black girl asked if you considered being in a Marvel movie, which your response was you wished you could, but your acting skills were horrible and that there was so much undiscovered talent that you would feel guilty for taking a role.

The questions were rolling when Chris got distracted by a dog. He actually got off stage to pet the fan’s dog. “This happens every time,” you pointed at Chris. “When he sees a dog, he drops everything. I mean everything and goes to pet them. I honestly think Chris is a dog in human form and he’s tricking us all.” you explained to the crowd.

Chris finished petting the dog and awkwardly hopped back onto the stage. Then he tried to be cool by flipping his mic, but he failed when he dropped it.

“Dork,” you mumbled.

When he returned to his seat, Chris licked your face. “Since, you believe I’m a dog.”

You wiped the cheek he licked with a look of pure disgust. “You’re just mad because Dodger loves me more,” you taunted him.

The rest of the con went on with a breeze. When Chris was taking pictures with fans, some even asked you to join and you happily obliged.

By the time you left the con, you and Chris returned to the hotel and automatically prepared for bed. You didn’t realize how exhausting being at a comic-con could be.

“How do you think today went,” Chris asked from his bed while you were going through your bedtime routine in the bathroom.

“Babe, it was amazing. I don’t know why I was so worried. Is it always like this?”

Chris broke out into a smile. He knew you would fall in love with the cons, he thought it was the best part of his job. Meeting the people who loved the work he did and supported him was wonderful and Chris was glad you got to enjoy it. “Yup. It’s even more fun with RDJ there, but I’m kinda scared if you and Robert shared the same stage.”

Offended that your boyfriend didn’t want you to share a stage with one of your good friends, you poked your head through the door to peer at him. “Listen to me Evans, me and Robert would be fun on the stage.”

“That’s my point! You two you would be ganging up on me.”

Going back to your nighttime routine you manically laughed at Chris. People typically hated when you and Robert were in the same room, because you would two would team up and roast everyone in the room and Chris is usually your favorite target.

“Maybe you have a point.”

Chris and you fell into a comfortable silence while you finished getting ready for bed. You were reminiscing over the day and he was practicing his speech for you in his head for tomorrow. When you finished getting ready, you joined Chris into bed he instinctively pulled you into his embrace. He smiled against your neck and you thought he was happy at the turn of events for today, but in reality, his smile stemmed from his excitement about the ring he was planning on giving you and taking one step closer of making you Mrs. Chris Evans.

10 Underused Character Questions ~

Introduction -

Name: Angelique Candide (pronounced like candied, like candied apple)

Age: 19-20

Your favorite picture of your muse’s fc: My Icon really, because I drew it myself I was still very proud of it. I just lost the original file, but you can find it in “mun’s art” page.

Questions -

What would be their twitter name? What sorts of tweets would they tweet? Hm...I think Angelique would have the twitter name, Angelsweets, but that’s just because it’s a shortened part of her name, but she also has a pretty big sweet tooth. Angelwing would probably be taken with this day and age. Her twitter feeds would probably compose with small updates, picture diaries with her friends, plant life, photos from a trip, and stuff she would bake in the kitchen.

What’s their favorite genre of movies? Of music? Angelique’s favorite movies are a mixture, she loves romance movies, and horror during certain times of the year. However, she really loves Disney films because they were what she grew up with (also, she does know through reading that the fairy tales are different). As for music, music from the Early 2000′s and a handful of modern pop music are the kinds of things you’d find on her playlist. It ranges from having Green Day, Fall Out Boy, original Backstreet Boys, Lady Gaga, and the list goes on (including a few movie soundtracks)

What’s on their top queue on Netflix? Anything with a fantasy genre really, she’s a sap for fantasy movies because there’s just something with being taken in with the amount of hard work that can go into creating a fictional world with a brilliance of creatures. However, she’s also a bit of a sucker for watching shows that are under her age demographic, but to her as long as the story and plot is engaging, she will enjoy it.

What’s their favorite scent? Do they smell like that? Anything that has to do with the baking scenario, vanilla, cinnamon, apple, and pumpkin spice, if she’s got a candle for every season, a lot of them will either have a scent of fresh baked cookies or summer fruit, or a cake. Most of the time, no she doesn’t smell like that, she prefers to wear a mint scent from perfume, peppermint, or a clean citrus one. However, some small bit of information, she has a lot more floral scented shampoo and body wash when she gets herself clean.

Apple or Android? Android, hands down. Angelique just never understood the hype with Apple brand of products. She doesn’t need a lot of bells and whistles with her phone and devices, just the ability to have the apps she cares about and plenty of storage space for memory. The only real thing she would really like is maybe a fitbit or some kind of smart watch from them, but those are usually expensive. Usually she’s a few models behind because she uses her devices until they can no longer be used.

Favorite Season? Least favorite season? Fall and Winter are her favorite seasons at the top of the list because the warmth of cozy sweaters, fresh baked cookies with smells, and just the feeling that they bring just makes it worth while. Not to mention she’s had a lot of fun at festivals during these two times of the year. Spring is great to her in third because the weather’s not too hot or too cold, and it’s prime planting season to get fresh goods. Summer would be dead last only because of the heat, and she has a tendency to get sunburned really badly what with her complexion and hair color, while summer means a lot more fun activities, harvesting time for plants like tomatoes, she just can’t stand being outside too long during the day when the sunlight is at its strongest...even if it makes her sound like a vampire.

Are they a bottom or top or versatile? Angelique...is more of a bottom type of person, but that’s just because if she’s comfortable with her partner, she would love for them to be in control and make the feeling amazing between them. However, if her partner would like to mix it up a little, she can sometimes be a bit more on the dominant role if she is extremely frisky.

Describe their morning routine. Do they wake up early or sleep in? Do they press the snooze button a bunch of times or do they immediately get up? Day dependent, Angelique loves to stay up late so she does have a tendency to turn off the snooze button and fall back asleep until she finally has to get herself out of bed, but if she knows that there is something on a routine that she knows needs to get done, she’s usually good with getting an early start. Angelique’s morning routine is pretty simple; make breakfast, clean the dishes used from the previous night and that morning, if it’s on the list of to do’s; exercise, then shower, and go out shopping if she had to, or work, or whatever.

If they were to be compared to a canon character, who would that be? (Spirit animal) I kind of have a hard time comparing her to a canon character, because her personality is just her own. However, I think her biggest spirit animal will actually have to be Hunk from Voltron, not because he is a cook or anything, but also because she tries to be friendly with people, and in times of stress try to keep them together while trying to keep herself as centered as possible. A wonderful support person.

Batwoman Season 2 Episode 8 Review: Survived Much Worse

Batwoman Season 2, Episode 8

This season of Batwoman has focused a lot on the question posed in the season premiere title: What happened to Kate Kane? Despite what could have been an open-and-shut, neatly wrapped-up character exit where Kate Kane dies suddenly in a plane crash, the writers felt it was important to keep Kate in play and reintroduced the possibility of her survival in Episode 3 of the season, “Bat Girl Magic.”

Then, I was annoyed by the show’s choice to recenter Kate, perhaps because I suspected there would be no satisfying follow-through—like Ruby Rose making a cameo appearance—perhaps I was wrong. Ever since Safiyah told Alice that Kate was alive on the island, getting to Coryana to retrieve her has been the primary focus for Jacob and Sophie, Alice, and the Bat Team. In this week’s episode, Coryana has finally been found and Kate may be within arm’s reach. Except— surprise!!!—Safiyah lies. Kate was never on the island, and the entire thing was an unnecessarily elaborate ploy by Safiyah to get revenge on Alice and Ocean for their betrayal. Mess.

I should state now, before I get into it, that I love what this episode does for Batwoman. It gives everyone things to do, even Julia who returns just in time to deliver the bad news that Kate Kane is actually, definitively, verifiably, no longer among the living… according to her body parts what washed up in Bludhaven. This episode solidifies Sophie as a potential change-maker within the Crows organization. It allows Alice to introspect on her feelings towards her sister, and confront or at least acknowledge her victimhood at the hands of Safiyah. This episode also shifts the relationship dynamics between Batwoman and the Crows, making room for more cooperation in the future, or even potentially allyship. Luke still cares about Kate, but he also cares about Ryan, and the team feels solid. And Ryan continues to prove she is a worthy successor to the Batwoman mantle, saying iconic lines like, “I am saving them. I am saving Kate. And I’m saving my damn self.”

That said, I am miffed by choices Batwoman writers made in service of this story. First of all, a lot of good sense had to be thrown out in order for these characters to end up on Coryana in the first place. Safiyah is notoriously ruthless and self-serving, yet is immediately believed when she produces the smallest evidence of having seen Kate. The open acceptance of her premise that Kate is alive and captive goes against everything the show establishes about her, and everything characters like Alice and Julia know to be true. It forces a lot of supposedly smart people to lose all their discernment. When Alice is taken to “Kate’s” room on the island, and finds hundreds of duplicates of Kate’s necklace with the red gem, it is supposed to be A Moment. But it is obvious to the audience she was never there, and should’ve been obvious to Alice. What redeems this scene is how Alice responds, by burning the field of Desert Roses.

Second, this episode weakens Safiyah in a lot of ways I’m not sure are intentional. What made Safiyah cool, as a villain we only knew by name, was the fact that she was so powerful and present without having to be on-screen. Seeing her reach, and knowing she had the resources to be everywhere and get to anyone made her frightening. Batwoman introduced her as a ruthless, calculated, and capable antagonist but reduced her to a petty, vindictive woman. Tatiana plants the idea in Alice’s head that Safiyah took down Kate’s plane, so that Alice would respond in kind, stoking hostility between the two women. Safiyah takes advantage of the situation to orchestrate a revenge plot wherein Alice kills the man she loves, but doesn’t remember. Safiyah does the absolute most to get back at Alice and Ocean for falling in love and trying to leave Coryana, and what she sees as betrayal. Safiyah’s entire relationship with Alice is framed as “if I can’t have you no one can,” which is dull. And worse, everything she’s done this season has been to enact revenge on people who are literally over it because she’d already erased their memories and sent them into the world broken. Again, sense… where is it?

What I did love to see was Sophie challenging Jacob on the false narrative that Crows are not above the law. Like Batwoman, the Crows operate mostly unencumbered by traditional structures of authority. The difference is, the Crows get paid to do it. An exchange I find hilarious is when Tatiana reveals Safiyah’s interest in having Sophie stay on the island. Sophie asks, “why would I join an army of ruthless killers?” To which Tatiana replies, “Cause you are already part of one.” This is a thread I hope the writers follow. My favorite moment though comes when Sophie finds Batwoman dying, and stays with her because she doesn’t want to die alone. This is a beautiful, tender moment that reminds us of these characters’ humanity. There is compassion and a genuine connection between them. I hope Ryan and Sophie become close, platonically or romantically, because without their uniforms, they align in a lot of ways, and they both deserve to love and be loved by someone who sees them.

I had hoped this episode would be the final word on Kate Kane, but it seems Batwoman may not be done with her yet. At the very end of the episode we see a body wrapped in bandages wearing Kate’s necklace. Kate is alive and has been recast (with Krypton‘s Wallis Day), and it seems her story has only just begun. What this means for the show going forward is hard to say, but I’m wary of how much the focus might pivot back to Kate. My hope is that however Kate returns to Gotham, her reintroduction doesn’t take any time, energy, or focus away from Ryan. I love creative solutions to a cast member leaving but I don’t want that to come at the expense of other characters. Kate is important, but Ryan wears the Batwoman mantle now, and she has earned the right to stand on her own.

Additional thoughts.

Angelique gave Ryan a Desert Rose, unbeknownst, which Ryan has been nursing for years now. As far as we know, Ryan’s plant is one of the few that survive now, which might make her a new target of Hamilton Dynamics and Safiyah.
