Fluent Freshman - Part 17
PREVIOUS
1. You do not talk about the Speakeasy in the basement 2. You DO NOT TALK about the Speakeasy in the basement
Those are two of the three cardinal rules of Eden’s Twilight both as a VIP customer and as an employee. The rest are more suggestions or requests that are fairly malleable depending on the night and the patron.
Andrew himself had broken the latter half of ‘Don’t be a dick or try anything with your dick on the club premises’ multiple times with Roland and then he’d broken it even further and with more vigor with Neil.
Roland had tried to bill them for the furniture in the break room and Andrew had been more than happy to use some of the blackmail he’d been holding onto to make it go away despite Neil’s repeated attempts to try and pay for it. “It’s my fault Andrew, I asked you to lay me there.” And “Allison didn’t warn me that it could stain fabric, she said it transferred really easily onto skin.” Had been waved away as Roland was happy to have those particular bits of blackmail out of play.
That being said Roland had come in despite the clear ‘occupied’ signs on the door and interrupted some of Andrew’s finest work a few weeks ago (His from? Excellent. His pacing? Excellent. His angle? Excellent. The noises Neil had been making? Perfection.)
Roland still couldn’t look at Neil without his eyes wandering where they shouldn’t so Andrew had a guest pass for the speakeasy waiting for him at the bar to make up for that wandering eye.
Which meant that he could take FF down to the speakeasy tonight. He was sure that FF would pass muster and be able to come without a pass after the night, he was just the kind of guy that they liked to have down there.
It would all be so simple if it weren’t for the third cardinal rule of Eden’s Twilight.
3. Nicky Hemmick is not allowed to know about the Speakeasy.
When Nicky had worked at Eden’s he’d been popular but he’d also talked about all sorts of secrets. He spilled tea like Aaron had spilled drinks.
So the club had done what it had to do in order to protect the incredibly select and private feature of their club:
They lied about what was down there and then they committed to that lie.
So the day came and Nicky was looking at the door with a guard next to it, “Where does that go?” He asked.
“It’s an exclusive club for straight swingers to meet and swap.” The lie rolls off of Roland’s tongue like the truth.
Nicky made a disgusted face. “Straight people.” He said shaking his head and then Roland swiftly made some purchases to sell his lie and offered the guard Frank an additional $5 an hour if he was willing to change his uniform.
Nicky Hemmick has never gone near the door since then and it is considered a success for the record books by all of the staff and VIPs in the know.
Which is why Andrew had needed a plan to pry Nicky off of FF for the night.
Nicky and FF had spent the entire time at Sweeties elbowing one another and laughing (well Nicky laughed and FF tolerated all of Nicky’s jokes and implications stoically), Nicky had been sticking with FF like he was one of the various flecks of glitter that stuck to FF after the freshman had slept in Nicky’s bed.
Before he’d gotten FF dressed up Nicky had made a solemn oath, “You and me Smithy, we’ll dance the night away!” Nicky had exclaimed.
“I’m good thanks.” FF said, “You know what will happen if I dance.” He says and Nicky grimaces as if remembering something painful. He wonders if FF just isn’t a good dancer or if the consequences of someone bumping into him were as painful as they were when someone bumped into Andrew on the dance floor.
“Well, then you and me will just have to spend the entire night chatting in the booth Smithy!” Nicky had smiled as if he wasn’t fucking up Andrew’s plans to take FF down to the speakeasy where they could sit without the headache inducing music that Nicky, Aaron, and even Kevin (he claims Stockholm syndrome) claim to love.
So, Andrew had needed to find a way to get Nicky to a state where he would be compelled to dance and leave FF alone for the night.
There are exactly three sure-fire ways to get Nicky Hemmick to become a slave to the dance floor.
1. You have to play his favorite music and Andrew doesn’t know if there’s enough blackmail in the world to get Roland to force a DJ to play nothing but Nicki Minaj’s Super Bass, Gasoline by Daddy Yankee, or Usher’s DJ’s Got Us Fallin’ In Love (his three current obsessions) on a loop for the entire night. (Bust)
2. You are Erik Klose and you want to dance. This option was unlikely due to Erik currently (as far as Andrew knew) being in Germany. (Bust)
3. Nicky has taken some party drugs. (Feasible)
So, Andrew may have been the one that had reminded both his brother and Nicky about Cracker Dust on their way to the car. Neil shoots him a look he ignores because Andrew hasn’t really pushed or mentioned Cracker Dust in almost a year.
It was something that they had all gotten off of for various reasons the year prior.
Neil had never started, Andrew had his deal with Neil, Kevin wanted to cut back on the substances he was abusing and he was not going to be giving up alcohol anytime soon, Aaron had needed a squeaky clean image for the trial, and Nicky had given it up in solidarity.
Aaron had been bemoaning that he had forgotten to get any the last four times they had gone to Eden’s so, really, Andrew was just being a thoughtful brother when he’d reminded his cousin.
So when they park the Maserati and head into the club it is no shock that after the first round of drinks (Neil & FF both had bottled waters) Nicky whips out the sandwich baggy he had gotten from FF and hands Aaron his share.
In a turn of good luck a bass heavy remix of Flo Rida’s Club Can’t Handle Me started playing and the only thing Nicky did was squeal, kiss FF’s cheek, and drag Aaron out onto the dance floor.
And then there were three.
***
FF had NOT been able to figure out where the hell the bathrooms were.
It might be due to the fact that his stomach is trying to stage a revolt against him but he’s pretty sure he’s forgotten how to read English. There are no other languages around  for him to see if this illiteracy has spread to other languages.
He wonders it he brought out his katakana flashcards if the lines would blur or if his brain would be so filled with the unrelenting desire to go to the bathroom that his Professor would wonder how he ever got full marks on his midterm.
Maybe clubs didn’t have signs that pointed to the bathroom? Was he supposed to go up and ask that bartender that Andrew kept going to? Was it like a gas station where he had to ask for keys?
Oh god Captain Neil just asked him something.
When the hell did Nicky lea-
Oh Dj’s Got Us Falling In Love is playing. Nicky is definitely on the dance floor. FF has yet to escape Nicky grinding on him whenever this song happens to come on the radio he is sure that someone right now out on the dance floor is suffering the same fate that he has 3-4 times a week.
He wonders if Nicky will call Erik like he usually does when it comes on outside of the club.
At least it’s super hard to hear in this club if Nicky takes a seat next to him and starts gushing to Erik in German.
Oh god Captain Neil just asked him something and he just remembered that this would be the second time Captain Neil has asked him something.
If there was one weakness in FF’s foreign language arsenal it is that he has a hard time processing language when surrounded by loud sounds. If he knows what language they’re talking in he can sometimes get by on reading lips (does that count as another language? Probably not) but Captain Neil speaks like four languages fluently and his Spanish is getting better and better every-
Oh god Captain Neil and Andrew just asked him something and he still hasn’t answered the other two times.
“I can’t hear you!” He calls out and hopes they can at least understand HIM.
Andrew rolls his eyes and bumps Captain Neil’s shoulder with his own. He sees Andrew whisper something to Captain Neil before pointing somewhere in the distance.
OH
They had noticed his obvious plight and were going to show him to the bathroom!
That was nice.
Maybe Nicky had asked them before his songs came on.
Andrew and Captain Neil are out of the booth and Andrew juts his chin off in a certain direction. FF does NOT need to be told twice, he’s more than happy to follow Andrew to the bathroom like some pre-schooler following their mom. These are desperate times.
So Andrew and Captain Neil guide him across the dance floor and…sure enough Nicky is grinding on some other guy who looks like he’s in heaven and he thinks he can see Aaron’s pale arms flying uncoordinatedly all over the place somewhere in the middle distance.
FF finds himself with Captain Neil and Andrew in a hallway. There’s a guard in front of the door with a bizarre pineapple shirt (why are they all upside down?) on but FF hadn’t even dressed himself tonight so he really shouldn’t judge.
“Minyard, Josten, and one guest.” He can hear Andrew say now that they’re away from the loud thrum of the music.
How fancy is this bathroom?
The man looks at Andrew, Captain Neil, and then FF. There is a visible head-to-toe inspection when he hits FF and whatever the man sees must past muster.
“Acceptable. You know the rules.”
Rules?
Wash your hands?
Don’t piss on the floor?
Let staff know if the urinal is low on ice?
FF hoped the rules would be posted in easy to understand pictures because his ability to read the English language was still heavily hampered at the moment.
Why is the handle to the door an upside pineapple too? Did someone install it wrong? Also Eden’s does not give off a very tropical vibe so why would they pick that?
The door opens and-
Oh.
Those are stairs.
Oh.
Andrew’s taking him to the basement.

The King's Men - Chapter Eleven
Day: Friday, February 23rd Time: 1:30 AM EST
Neil didn't want to know how far back Andrew's memory stretched. "So California and South Carolina. You've really never been anywhere else except when traveling for a game?" Andrew only shrugged in dismissal. Neil thought it over for a bit, then said, "Spring break's coming up. We could go someplace." "Go someplace," Andrew echoed, like it was a foreign concept. "Where and why?" "Anywhere," Neil said, and amended, "Anywhere at least three hours from campus. There's no point in going someplace closer than that. It won't feel like a vacation. The only trick is figuring out how to pry Kevin away from the court." "I have knives," Andrew reminded him. "That doesn't answer the 'why'." Neil couldn't explain where the idea had come from, so he said, "Why not? I've never traveled just for the sake of it, either. I want to know what it's like." "You have a problem," Andrew said, "wherein you only invest your time and energy into worthless pursuits." "This," Neil flicked his finger to indicate the two of them, "isn't worthless." "There is no 'this'. This is nothing." "And I am nothing," Neil prompted. When Andrew gestured confirmation, Neil said, "And as you've always said, you want nothing." Andrew stared stone-faced back at him. Neil would have assumed it a silent rejection of Neil's veiled accusation if Andrew's hand hadn't frozen midair between them. Neil took the bottle from Andrew's other hand and set it off to one side where they couldn't knock it over. "That's a first," Neil said. "Do I get a prize for shutting you up?" "A quick death," Andrew said. "I've already decided where to hide your body." "Six feet under?" Neil guessed. "Stop talking," Andrew said, and kissed him.

I feel like it’s not talked about enough that early in the books Kevin is the only person we see Andrew initiating any type of physical closeness/touch with at all … also thinking about how they’re described physically with each other in Son of Nefes like. so much tenderness (@ your tags about how Andrew carries himself around Kevin and Neil)
I definitely think their closeness in the beginning gets overshadowed a lot by how close Andrew and Neil get later in the series. And that's not a diss on andreil! I think it's important to Andrew's character to see that while Neil played a very large part in letting Andrew explore his boundaries and grow comfortable with physical affections, there were others that helped in that healing along the way too.
One of my favourite scenes is the one where Kevin takes his glove off for Andrew to inspect his hand for any damages. It's written in such a way that implies they weren't paying any attention to the rest of the world around them. Matt had been carded, the play was over and a fight had broken out, and during that sliver of time, either Andrew had hailed Kevin over or he'd gone of his own volition to the goal for Andrew to give his injuries a one over. Kevin knew he was going to get swapped out, and they both turned somewhat surprised when Dan called out to Kevin, as if the game being in play was an afterthought. (Which, considering it's Kevin, seems somewhat ooc since he always knows what's going on on court).
And, although we don't have the exact words regarding Andrew's deal with Kevin, it was implied in the most basic terms that Andrew would protect Kevin from Riko. (There's obviously nuance here given Andrew's bodyguard tendencies when Kevin gets into later spats with people, but for the sake of how vague most of Andrew's deals are spoken aloud, I think it's safe to assume he promised to protect Kevin from his big bad not sibling in the same way he promised to have Neil's back). All that just to say... It wasn't really in their deal for Andrew to protect or look after Kevin outside of his affiliations with the Ravens. And yet, even after threatening to break his own hand before all this, because Kevin annoyed the piss out of him so much, here he was, inspecting Kevin's hand and putting the game on hold to do so.
This injury has nothing to do with Riko or the Ravens. So, in terms of their deal, he didn't really need to dote on Kevin like that. And yet.
And yet.
And this is really only one instance of them being glued at the hip. Andrew does a lot of redirecting of Kevin's person in the same way we see him do later with Neil. Like you said as well, Kevin's the only one for some pages that we see Andrew physical with that isn't necessarily reactionary or defensive. I know Andrew was still on his meds at the time, but this line came across to me as him literally shoving Andrew down court who didn't seem to take much issue with the it:
Tumblr media
He doesn't make much mention of it, but if I had to wager a guess, these moments of familiar contact are not a new thing upon Neil's arrival.
(Also it's been a hot minute since I skimmed through son nefes (the ec and I are on cherry picking terms most days) but I know Renee saw it too.)
Like it makes me insane to think about how their deal didn't have to incorporate all that closeness. It didn't require Andrew to become intertwined with the rest of Kevin's life and daily going on's. He could have agreed to keep him on a leash from getting dragged out of the fox den by the Ravens and called it a day, but we can see clear as day that Andrew treats his relationship with Kevin far more delicately than that. In terms of canon, the best friend (platonic soul bond or whatever title floats your fancy) behaviour jumped out of Andrew so fast, I'm shocked how anyone could overlook it.
And I haven't even touched on how Wymack views their relationship, or Kathy's show, or the role Andrew plays as Kevin's other half post Evermore, or the first genuine smiles are the ones they give each other, or the pseudo threat of the butter knife scene, or whatever they had going on here:
Tumblr media
Like, there are certainly motions that can be considered varying levels of tender, but I do think it's important to remember that Andrew's gestures should not be measured with the same scale as say someone like Renee. We can obviously see in later chapters that Andrew can be incredibly gentle (ie the hip kiss that ruined my life), but I think it's a disservice to Andrew's character to understate how close he and Kevin are through the series, both physically and emotionally.

In Breaking Bad, season 2, Jesse confesses to Jane that his real name is Pinkman and that Walter isn't his father. He didn't have to do it, she wouldn't have cared much, but he still chose to offer her the truth. Pretty obviously because he likes her. That scene made me think about Andrew and Neil and their so-called "honesty game" their entire relationship is based on one (especially Neil) telling the other (usually Andrew) the truth to gain the latter's trust. Taylor really made some points when she said "I'll tell you the truth, but never goodbye." Being in a relationship is constantly making the same deal, over and over, everyday. Offering honesty for the price of trust.

Fanfic writer challenge (aftg edition)
1. list & explain the three lines/moments from canon that are most fundamental to how you write your fave character
2. challenge 3 more fic writers to do the same!
Tks for the idea and tag @mostlymaudlin !
I meant to sleep but couldn't stop thinking about this so here we go. ANDREW MINYARD:
1. Theres a lot under the surface (and under this break)
"How a man who viewed the world with such studied disconnect could kiss like this, Neil didn't know, but he wasn't going to complain." (TKM)
One day I'll share my essay on surface ppl versus depth ppl but just know Andrew is a depth person.
2. He knows Neil.
Neil asking Andrew how he can stand him after everything:
Neil reached for him, unwilling to let him leave without a real answer.
"No," Andrew said, and Neil's hand froze a breath from Andrew's arm. (TKM)
Maybe also indicative of his understanding of other ppl in general. Analyzes them, never forgets anything. Pretty much always knows what to expect. Neil is the only one who ever really manages to surprise him. But in this moment he knows what Neil will do, and he uses that to demonstrate his point.
Not the most important thing in this scene, which shows how Neil knows and respects Andrew's boundaries. Among other things. But still.
3. He's a self sacrificing asshole who sees things in black and white. Especially his own commitments and what it means to protect someone. Neil explaining to Aaron why Andrew killed Tilda:
"Why he—what? That isn't the same. He didn't do that for me."
"He told me he did," Neil said. "I didn't even have to ask him. He warned her to stop hitting you and she wouldn't. He had no choice but to get rid of her. ...
"Except I lied," Neil said, getting to his feet. "Unlike you, he's not angry that you interfered. I just said that because I needed you to understand." (TRK)
Andrew doesn't get angry, he gets even lol.
4. Bonus. He doesnt get angry, except when he does.... at how much he cares about Neil.
hotel scene:
"I'm sorry," Nathaniel said.
...
"Say it again and I will kill you." (TKM)
Like, is he bluffing? Is he serious? I don't think he'd hurt Neil (death threats are old hat at this pt) but I think it does make him absolutely livid that Neil would put himself in harm's way. Angry at Neil for being a martyr and making him worry, but angry at himself for worrying in the first place. Neil made him renege on his deal, which Andrew never does, but even after that Andrew still cares about him. And then Neil goes and gets himself kidnapped. How! Dare! He!!!!! And how dare Andrew for still wanting to protect this stupid little rabbit. Love him

hi! I wanted to ask for canon compliant fics that are set after the books where neil and andrew are not trying to actively hide their relationship but the press still believes they hate each other, thank youuuuu
Tumblr media
Most Minyard-Josten rivalry fics feature Neil or, occasionally, Andrew as the instigator, but I’m sure you’ll enjoy at least some of the fics mentioned here.  The following tags may also yield more results: secret relationship, minyard-josten rivalry,* coming out. - S
*NB: this tag is not working. We are puzzling it out and don’t want to hold up this answer any longer. We’ll edit the link in here when we fix it. UPDATE - tag is working!

Part 1 of the Better Together series
Neil and Andrew aren't on the same professional teams, but that doesn't mean they're any less together. When a photograph gets taken out of context, they decide to go with it, as long as they're both having fun. And they are. Right?
heart shaped hatred by WICKEDP0WERS [Rated G, 4780 words, complete, 2021]
The Minyard VS Josten Rivalry continues once more in the latest Ducks VS Pythons Regional game. Held on February 14th, the two teams will face off after a grueling season filled with defeats and victories. These two high ranked Exy teams will battle it out on the court, filling fans of the game with excitement seeing as these two talented teams are going to give everyone a run for their money.
Josten, Starting Striker for the Colorado Ducks was asked about his thoughts on his upcoming rematch with long time rival and ex-teammate from the PSU Foxes, Andrew Minyard. “It’s not really a face off between me and Andrew. The Pythons are a great team and I could say that the Ducks are as well,” Josten said. “I would say it isn’t personal but I can’t wait to beat Andrew Minyard for the next game. I’ve got a score to settle with that angry midget. I can’t wait to see him on the court.”

My take on the Minyard-Josten Rivalry/Pro Andreil!
A long collection of sequential scenes throughout Andrew and Neil's lives, post books.
Including, but not limited to, my interpretation of the Minyard-Josten Rivalry, the old Foxes playing with kittens for a YouTube video, so much soft and sweet Andreil you will get cavities, and headcanons I have been thinking about all year.

The rise and fall of the Minyard-Josten Rivalry.
Usually when Neil starts shit in a post-game press interview, he does it on purpose. This time, he really just meant for it to be a joke.

“Great,” Neil answers, sincere. “I would love to play with Matt or Kevin again.”
“What about Minyard? Would you sign with Atlanta?”
Neil says, “Andrew? He’s a nightmare.”
He knows it’s a joke. His team knows it’s a joke. Andrew will know it’s a joke.

But actually on a second thought on the AFTG Musical post I made just 5 fucking minutes ago, I am also convinced that said musical would need to have a scene in which Andrew and Neil are singing together "Lay all your love on me" from ABBA. I don't make the rules. Like imagine hearing Andrew sing:
I wasn't jealous before we met
Now every man I see is a potential threat
(never mind that in this case the boy is literally running from the mafia so every man is a threat)
And I'm possessive, it isn't nice
You've heard me saying that smoking was my only vice
(we all know how Andrew smokes and we all know this could have been a canon line in the book but instead he calls Neil a junkie, it all makes sense)
But now it isn't true
Now everything is new
(the new interest, the feeling, the want and everything new and because of a math nerd what an icon)
And all I've learned has overturned
(just the idea of Andrew having to rethink all of his sessions with Bee because of Neil makes this line hilarious)
I beg of you
(okay this part doesn't really stick but it still counts)
But wait , wait there's more because then Neil sings :
Don't go wasting your emotion
(here we see how Neil knows Andrew pretends he doesn't have emotions so like an asshole he is, Neil tells Andrew to not show so much emotion over him, that that shows how much he cares)
Lay all your love on me
It was like shooting a sitting duck
(like because how Andrew told Neil to stay)
A little small talk, a smile and baby I was stuck
(okay in this one poor Andrew had to tell Neil he would suck his dick for him to realize , but after that Neil fell faster than light)
I still don't know what you've done with me
A grown-up man should never fall so easily
(like from all the times his mother would tell Neil that love was something dangerous and bad)
I feel a kind of fear
When I don't have you near
(there's a literal canon scene in the books where Neil defines Andrew's back as something to lean on and just oh so perfect for Neil to trust so you can't fight me on this one)
Unsatisfied, I skip my pride
( Neil gutted out all his secrets from Andrew amd I know this killed Neil's pride, I know it from the idea Neil has of trusting someone as a weakness)
I beg you dear
(this is same as Andrew, that doesn't really stick but it still counts even I'd they would not beg to each other)

Okay I'm retyping this BC Tumblr deleted the original which was way better worded but whatever. Edited this a little bit to put a disclaimer to say that, although this scene annoys me I still very much love Andrew and Neil their character and all that but this scene made them feel very OOC to me and that's why I felt the need to rant about it. If you disagree with me that's fine, but let's keep it civil please 🥰
I'm just,,,, really annoyed with the way Andrew treats Kevin in the end of the kings men. Andrew made a promise to Kevin to keep him safe and Nora says Andrew isn't one to break promises so why the fuck did he choke the shit out of Kevin and threatened him with a knife over something as simple as not wanting to go on a vacation to train (I'm assuming he wanted to either train alone or with like at least one person you didn't have to make such a big fuss about it?)
Like Kevin is clearly afraid of Andrew in the later chapters (and yes I have proof of this I digged it up it's why the original, better worded version of this got deleted I'll show it later) and like? Wtf? Andrew promised to protect Kevin, to keep him safe and instead the moment Neil goes missing he pulls a 180. There is something to be said here about how much he cares about Neil, sure, but I'm going to ignore it in favour of focusing on Kevin.
Kevin trusted Andrew to keep him safe from the literal mob, trusted him enough to keep him close with him the entire time because he was afraid that if he was alone he would run back to the ravens and what does Andrew do? He breaks this immense trust Kevin gave him and hurts him. Now, the choking scene, I suppose can be chucked up to the fact that he had a case of tunnel vision for finding Neil and alright whatever sure but it's still unfair of him and the least he could have done was apologize but instead of apologising, when he is much calmer a few days later he uses a knife to threaten Kevin and you can't tell me that Riko wouldn't sometimes use knives as well to at least threaten Kevin ("You're only number two, Kevin. Don't talk out of place." A knife in his hand but never directly angled at Kevin, a silent warning of what Riko is capable of doing, not bluff, never bluff, because Kevin has seen what he can do with Jean) like, I know Andrew doesn't do "gentle" or "kind" but holy fuck even in Andrew's own way he could have done this much better like??
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The first image is of when Andrew presses a knife to him, but the second is of much earlier when Andrew does nothing but give him a shove. A shove, which I imagine is something Andrew has done a lot before so isn't something that would cause Kevin to feel afraid, but he is because he remembers Andrew's hands on his throat and he remembers that even the one person he thought he could trust with everything couldn't be trusted. Like, don't get me wrong I still love the strange relationships Andrew, Kevin and Neil have (not even necessarily romantic as Kandreil, but also in their friendship [because they are friends and they DO care]) I just wished Andrew would have apologised and not even necessarily on screen but just... An indication he knew he fucked up and hurt Kevin.
And if you read all the way to the end thank you and just keep in mind this is only how I feel about it!

i think another scene where andrew gets annoyed that neil isn't being manipulative with him is that car deal scene. andrew doesn't want to be in debt to neil because he thinks neil is only scrying for opportunities to take something from him. but neil makes a deal targeting andrew's self-destructiveness. neil isn't asking anything for himself he's asking for andrew to care about himself and that must have killed him.
i don’t necessarily see this scene as you do
bcs sure neil wanted to offer something without asking anything in return to show andrew that it’s okay to do it this way and not everything has to be quid pro quo. but andrew wasn’t about that, not yet at least, so neil quickly returned to their old pattern which andrew found comfortable - and asked him to stop taking cracker dust so that andrew “wouldn’t be in his debt” or however he saw it. i liked it bcs i find the quid pro quo interactions very reasonable, especially with people who aren’t your life long friends who you trust. although andreil have said and done many thing for each other at this point - they still haven’t reached that stage. and that’s okay.
i think the definitive shift comes somewhere between the baltimore match when neil asks andrew to shut the goal and offers “anything” in return - by which he’s basically saying i trust you not to ask anything from me which i wouldn’t do plus our arrangement doesn’t matter anymore since i’d do anything for you anyway - and neil getting kidnapped and returning at which point andrew understands that the arrangement really doesn’t matter and that they’re only together bcs they want to, not bcs of some deals.
but going back to the car talk scene - there still was something for andrew to take away from it bcs neil offered to buy him a car with the money he was saving to go on a run again - which means that neil took another step closer to staying forever, staying with him
so probably this scene isn’t so much about andrew learning to lower his boundaries as about neil learning to lower his

Neil goes back into the main room and considers his locker. It doesn't take long to realize none of his teammates are moving. Matt is still frozen by the sinks. Wymack and Andrew stand in the bathroom doorway. Aaron, Kevin, and Nicky are by their lockers. Neil can feel all eyes on him. He feels like the truth is written on his skin for all of them to see. The message only said "Junior" but he expects someone to call him by his name. Neil looks around at them and focuses on the one most likely to help him salvage this. "Kevin," he says, and continues in French. "Get them moving. We've only got forty minutes until serve." "Can you play?" Kevin asks. "I'm pissed off, not injured," Neil snaps. "I'm not going to let this keep us from winning tonight. Are you?"
Kevin considered him for a moment, then turned a caustic look on their teammates. "Get moving. We have a game to win. "You're joking," Matt said, coming up behind Andrew and looking between the strikers. "You're really going to ignore the fact that this," he stabbed a finger in the direction of Neil's locker, "just happened? Neil, you look like a Carrie stunt double. You don't even want to get security up here while the scene's still fresh?" "No," Neil said. "I don't." "You're joking," Matt said again. Neil looked at him. "Riko is an egotist and an asshole. He wants us to react to this. If we do, he wins. Don't give him that satisfaction. Pretend this never happened and focus on the Terrapins." It took Wymack only a few more moments to pick his side. "No one's changing in here. Get your gear and get out. You can have the girls' room when they're done with it. I will give you one chance tonight," he said when Neil looked at him. "If I think your head isn't in the game, I will pull you so fast you'll get whiplash and Dan will take your place. Do you understand me?" "Yes, Coach," Neil said.

The Raven King - Chapter Five
Day: Tuesday, September 5th Time: 8:55 PM EST
Andrew finished what he was doing, snapped the phone shut, and tossed it at Neil. Catching it was instinctive, but Neil froze at the next words out of Andrew's mouth. "Who is Neil going to text?" He uncurled his fingers and stared at the gray phone resting in his palm. He didn't think a small thing like this should hurt so much, but the grief that punched through him left him in pieces. The roaring in his ears sounded like the ocean. For a moment he was back there on the beach watching fire eat through the car. He remembered how it smelled, the salt of the water and the sick stench of burning flesh. He could still feel the sand on his fingers, warm up top where the sun shone and cold deep down where he'd left his mother's bones. He'd saved their phones for last. Every time they moved they got new cell phones, prepaid burners they could ditch at the first hint of trouble. He wanted to keep hers. He wanted something real to hold onto in her absence. Even then he'd known better. He threw them into the waves before leavingthe beach. He'd never gotten a new one for himself. He'd never seen a point; Neil had no one in the world he could call. "Neil." The urgent tone of Nicky's voice finally cut through the buzzing in Neil's ears. Neil dragged his stare up to Nicky's face and realized too late Nicky had been speaking to him. Nicky's expression was tight with concern. Neil swallowed hard and tried to remember how to breathe. He closed his fingers around the phone so he wouldn't have to look at it and held it out toward Nicky. "No." Nicky held up his hands. He looked less like he was warding off the phone and more like he was trying to calm a cornered animal. "Neil," he said, speaking very slowly and carefully, "we kind of need you to hold onto that. We need a way to get in touch with you this year." "You have this way of making people want to kill you," Andrew said. Nicky looked pained by that tactless explanation but he didn't take his eyes off Neil. "What if Coach needs to talk to you about something or Riko's freaky fans start causing trouble? Last year got really crazy toward the end, and this year isn't off to a good start. That's our just-in-case. You'll make us all feel better if we know we can find you." "I can't." It was too ragged and too honest, but Neil couldn't help it. If he didn't get rid of that phone he was going to be sick. "Nicky, I—" "Okay, okay," Nicky said, taking Neil's hand in both of his. "We'll figure it out."

hi I looove dashboard saints your characterization is so lovely <3 also was wondering your thoughts on Nora’s kandrew-adjacent tweet
Aaah thank you!! They're a lil rough and scrungly but I care them deeply ;;
And oh boi lmao that's a loaded question innit
I'll put under the read more in case people are trying to avoid anything new content wise!
So I saw a few of tweets and they weren't necessarily a surprise to me? Surprisingly lol
Kevin being the problem child wasn't out of my realm of thinking, but I'd never put it into those words. Though there is something to be said about her mentioning Kevin has a "homoerotic what are we" effect on people which like against also isn't a major surprise? (I'm thinking distinctly of that scene where he covers Neil's eyes because I don't know it was pivotal yes but also not the straightest thing I've read a man do.)
I am glad there was no elaboration like 'Andrew had unrequited feelings because of it' because honestly I think I would have had a meltdown if that was ever confirmed or something. Apollo do not grant me your gift of prophecy I need handled with kid gloves I am fragile.
But I mean in Most of my kandrew stuff with shipping goggles on, I always imagine Andrew being the one floundering a bit while Kevin is very blasé or unaware (or uncaring that he comes across that way). So for it to be canon, I'm like yeah alright.
The choking incident with Andrew not having and regrets also makes sense. That's a very Andrew way of considering it. (I have my own issue(1) with how that event went down but that's another story.) Kevin knowing Andrew would be mad also makes sense and it does really break my heart that he had already forgiven Andrew because he knew how he would react. Heartbreak in the 'oh god he knows Andrew so well' way. I've mentioned before that I always assumed from the moment Neil made him promise not to tell, that Kevin has resigned himself to his own grave, though. There was no way he was going to come out of that unscathed. I'm really just starry eyed over the fact that he knew it would happen and he wouldn't blame Andrew because he knew Andrew had fallen for Neil. Kevin holding onto all that remorse of not being able to do anything for Neil, to then be compounded with the knowledge that he would also be more or less playing a card in taking something away from Andrew? When Andrew had tried so valiantly to say he didn't care about anything or anyone? Kevin obviously knew that was a lie before Neil, but I imagine watching Andrew's feeling unfold for a person and knowing what was going to happen was gut wrenching. Kevin aka the boy with a heart of gold he's never been given the chance to really polish.
This all is completely, lovingly, amazingly, wonderfully rectified by the joy that is if andreil got married "Andrew would choose Kevin". Like I read that and my skin healed, my crops were watered, I never wanted for again. I dunno there was a part of me after reading that never felt a certain closure with their relationship (I mean sands the tattoo thing that helped and lives rent free) but I'd always kind of wondered if they ever got on after that. And apparently it was a no brainer if the option came up so I'm :')
This was long winded to say I'm happy to agree and incorporate these into my bank of knowledge but also please god no more angst for them I need to rest my weary heart
