We got the earth and the sky, but has anyone asked about what you think of Abzu?

i love abzu!!! another one i have watched the gdc talk for which you can watch here!!

the two big things in abzu are the fish animations and the overall environment lighting - lets start with fish!! there are a lot of them. and when you want to animate a lot of things, your computer will explode. this is specifically when you animate things with bones, how a lot of computer things are animated

luckily one thing that gpus can be really good at is drawing a tonnnn of the same object really fast, using something called instancing. as long as its the same mesh and material, it can be rendered a ton with just a single draw call (like i am talking hundreds of thousands). so lets make 10 thousand fish. unluckily this doesnt work with skeleton animations. luckily you dont need them! especially with fish

even though all the objects need to be the same mesh and material, doesnt mean they cant have different input. not only that but shaders let you modify individual vertexes, so, what if you just take all 10000 fish and wiggle them along an axis, like this

and give them all slightly different inputs so they arent all doing the exact same animation, maybe by giving them each their own unique number. now you have 10 thousand fish swimming around, wiggling, at almost zero rendering cost

these are all individual 3d models and all their animations are running in the shader !

the other way they animated fish without giving them bones was through something called blendshapes - these are usually used for stuff like facial animations, where you move vertices around to your desired "shape" (so like maybe your default face is :| but you edit the vertices so your character goes :> etc), and keep track of the difference between each vertex's position and its original position so you can move it whenever you want

that doesnt need any bones so they used this for things like fish going CHOMP and fish making sharp turns

for the actual environment, they experimented with a bunch of things like using actual volumetric lighting, but in the end they found that just using fog worked best!! they did tweak it a bit though - they had a "zone" between where the fog started to get thick and when the fog just ended up being a solid color where they dimmed any lighting - this really helped the background geometry stick out and give that underwater feel (left is without dimming the lights, right is with dimming the lights!! fun to think about how firewatch did something similar but changing the fog color based on depth rather than literally dimming the lighting)

they also let different volumes have their own fog value, so if there was say a cave off in the distance, it could have less fog than the surrounding area for clarity & also made the fog look a bit more volumetric

and the other huge thing that helped was "portal cards" - not an official term but its what they called them, basically just quads they could stick in any place where they needed to make something "stick out", like a cave, or a hilltop that blended with the background too much. the card sampled the depth of objects behind it, and used that 0 to 1 value to map a color to it. and then the closer youd get to these cards, the more transparent theyd get, until youre right on top of it and you dont need the objects to stick out of the background anymore!! here you can see a Me, but very dark, and then i slide the card over it. the black and white is the camera depth of all objects behind the card, minus the depth of the card. and mapping that to a color makes me stick out way more than i was initially!! then as you swim closer to me, the card fades away, until you pass the card completely

these portal cards were also used to make the light beams poking out from the surface, theyre just animated a bit!! you can see how the portal cards affect the look of things in this frame breakdown

and one other thing thats pretty prominent that wasnt touched on in the talk is all the caustics on the ground, those little wobbly light things you see underwater. but those were probably? just added to every shader as a "add this caustics texture on top based on the with the texture mapped to the world x and z position and only if the object is facing up"

Yknow its funny to me that I think it was most people's instinct - including my own - that the ot3 would happen between Sean and Jean first before approaching Marion to bring him into the fold. But thinking on this episode, it's looking more like Jean and Marion would bring Sean into the fold and him being very confused about it. Confused in a way that he feels undeserving. Might even take it more like 'oh im here to supply more fun, not to have the fun' and perform as a service top or bottom depending on the circumstance. I am scrubbing back through the VOD right now and absolutely reeling at how exceedingly bisexual it is that it takes one minute of game time after regaining consciousness in Jean's arms before Marion calls for Sean and they make a let's-hold-Marion sandwich

this episode rocked the axis of all three of them in my mind. like. the interactions Jean and Marion had in episode one had this almost schoolkid innocence to them, and I think a lot of the bottom table trio shippers, including me, wanted to play with the chemistry of Jean and Sean first and toss in the sweet romantic secret sauce of Marion after.

the angles of care here? episode two started what, a handful of days after the first episode? Jean still has a funeral to plan, but taking care of Marion is clearly a welcome distraction and when she's not actively doing that, she's looking out her window for EONS surveillance and having flashbacks to her dad dying. (to talk about later: the decision to have Zehra play Jinnah's father in Marion's dream, holy shit)

the fact that she now has a skill on her character sheet that lets her detect the "ailment, stress, or loss a person has in their life"??? oh boy, oh god, detecting sure isn't the same thing as fixing, is it? :))))))))))))))

and Sean?? the isolation? "I don't have anything. I don't have anything." "the last thing I need is anyone to come fucking take care of me." so let's give a quick overview of all of them! let's start with the classic

Hephae Canestus! She's a mechanic at Xen with unhealthy loyalty issues. She likes to stare at people a lot, and she's got a fairly thick southern accent. She comes from Unova and got her love for automechanics from her father.

King Caliburn! He's a grunt in Bladestar who has a hyperfixation on crustaceans. His entire team is crustacean Pokemon, and he aspires to become a veterinarian for aquatic Pokemon- but he also can't stand the way GDC is run, so he's going to help put a stop to that first.

Lusca! King's best friend and boss. A Bladestar Admin who uses mollusk Pokemon, they were the reason King got into Bladestar in the first place. He's also studying to become a veterinarian.

Queen Caliburn! King's sister. A teacher at Axis High, she has no clue what's happened to her brother. She knows he's in Bladestar, but him telling her that went worse than poorly, so now they're out of contact- after the events at the ball, she's worried he died.

Eleanor! She's a "Destroyer of Aevium" - aka the people under Vitus who use wield eleki and drago. She's the owner of Regidrago! She's a very violent and angry person, having been raised to be an aggressive weapon by Vitus since she was a baby. She has a crush on Hazuki which unfortunately leads to her death in the Sanctuary.

Raiden! The other "Destroyer of Aevium", he wields Regieleki. He's the strong, silent type, and usually lets Eleanor speak for him. He's also Eleanor's impulse control- otherwise, these two would just be getting into constant fights. He can and will beat the shit out of you, though. He manages to live into the modern day, but he's no longer a Destroyer. He's busy traveling.

Nathaniel Goode! Not much to go over with him; he's basically Zeight's antivirus system while also being a virus himself. He also coincidentally looks like a Garufan programmer also named Nathan Goode. Why he does is unknown because trying to communicate with him is impossible ( he's too busy fixing the rendering engine )

Gale Suite! She's a part of a family of travelers that extend over the rebornverse for the fun of it- she lives in Aevium and helps one of her family members hunt down Zygarde Cells. We'll only go over one of the other Suites to keep things as brief as humanly possible...

Kim Suite! She's the eldest of the Suites and the scariest. She's got a perpetual smile and a shade always over her face- this is hiding the fact she's actually a 25% Zygarde. She's the one who gathers Cells- mostly Just In Case Something Happens. She tends to go between Reborn and Aevium.

Ray and Yra! ( Yra's the one with the hat. ) Interceptor OCs based on the concept of making one different decision. Ray's paragon while Yra's renegade-- the turning point is the aftermath of Mt. Valor, where Yra decides to close herself off from everyone while Ray decides to help everyone get through it. Both are heavily committed to the Bit and tend to fail upwards in most battles.

I don’t know if you’ve already answered this but is there a reason for why you draw Viktor (pre Machine Herald) taller than Jayce? I know you aren’t drawing Arcane’s Viktor and I know Machine Herald is 6’2 while Jayce is 6’0 but I haven’t been able to find anything about his height before he evolved. Am I thinking too much about this and it’s actually just an artistic style? Or like, maybe it’s just the way you like (or are used to) to draw? him

Generally speaking: there is no Hard Canon explanation for it, Its something I've chosen because I think a lanky bodytype suits him (my leaguevik has messed about with hormones way earlier as well) and its cute, like a long flappy stringpuppet!

But on a completely different axis:

I started to get genuinely uncomfortable with the ways fandom would exaggerate arcane's height difference, more often than not babyfying or ukefying viktor (or professing him to be "Inherently More Effeminate" via stature) to make jayvik fit very limiting cishet gender role boxes. This comes paired with the "aggressor cis jayce" tropes and is Very Common and I wasn't vibing with it at all. The other thing it sidesteps is the overwhelming anorexia-chic style of vik fanart; you can draw thin people without making them look like proana adverts and I've seen a fair share of depictions of him that struck me in a *really* weird idolizing the consumption and pain way. Making him into a long rectangle gets rid of that. And tbh it also feels like people take his character more seriously when he's not something that can be easily sorted into the above categories? I dont want my fanwork to feel like it's playing into these tropes, or feeding into the cycle where they are The Only Thing Allowed To Ever Exist.

My league designs are a conscious effort to make things I don't see often. I want to make ship art without it being a determinist "so THIS is the top and THIS is the bottom" sentence. It's not how I interface with my sexuality and I personally don't think its how jayce or viktor would go about it either. Distancing myself from common fanon signifiers and their expected baggage allows my audience to embark in this beautiful wubbyland adventure with me, and also helps me not go completely insane

This morning I found myself on a bit of a crossroads more like becoming violently aware of a Clash between me making my own art to communicate myself and make myself understood and Nobody really quite getting it, knowing that’s sort of innate to the artistic process anyways. And I’m not completely sure how much I desire to be understood anymore.. I think this is one of the reasons of my slowing output, I can;t seem to find something very important to communicate. Every theme that used to be in my work that was material, or tied to our reality, that some people noticed, such as environmentalism or technologies, has come to feel very trite to me or shallow, so I evolve or fall down into these more bizarre images and mutations, my art becoming more of a parade for dancers and strange fusions of nature, animal, machines, vehicles, I think my art is much weirder, I don’t think this is a bad thing, but it is something I thought about this morning... I remember an interview I had done more than a year ago, which reading it now just feels like the desperate attempt of an autist to make himself understood. I think back then I really craved that sort of conversation, understanding. I wanted people to engage with my work on my own terms, I wanted to explain it all or at least give a few hints, a direction, anything, but I don’t really think it worked, I think it gave a few of my friends a framework with which to talk to me about my art, but that’s really the extent of it I think also that I’ve grown more detached with the inspirations I used to have for those themes, . and I think like a lot of us, I’ve just been drawn to darker things, a small feeling of hopelessness but also of a new freedom found in just accepting some truths about our current situations).This is just rambling, im sorry, but I think maybe my own personal growth as a person, how some things crystalize within me. Finally admitting I’m just an off person (Which is fine, i don’t mind it), has allowed me to explore myself a bit more comfortably in that sense. Going the extra mile. I think Del Toro said something along the lines of when you realize you’re one of the monsters, a lot of things start to make sense, you realize why you dont quite fit, or why you have a darkness inside you that can’t be silenced, and I found that quote to be very healing if you ask anyone that’s known me forever they’ll tell you i was always like this Honestly I feel my visual art, more specifically my drawings, just aren’t up to par with the things I ideally want to put out into the world. The worlds and animals and scenarios I imagine I really can’t realize them just with drawings. I need at least the axis of time in some way. It can’t just be one still image anymore. I’ve grown past that. So lately it’s just been a lot of thinking, regrouping, refining some worn talents and practicing, practicing... I hope soon you will see the fruits of it. Okay woah, starting off, these are some pretty impressive placements! just looking at them, you def could be someone who gains a lottttt in life. let's dig a lil deeper.

i place virgo on the service axis with pisces, which is cool because your moon rests in pisces. it shows me you have an internal longing to help others (moon) and you are usual able to carry this out via a practical approach (ascendant). because of this, you may come across as someone who talks the talk and walks the walk. virgo ascendants usually come across as very sure of themselves and very competent. think managerial roles. i saw this a lot, but i feel like leos get a bad rep. leos tend to be the star of the show (either in person or in their head lol), but not from a place of vanity. leos tend to find themselves as important people, but it's because of their INDIVIDUALITY that they see themselves as having a lot to offer to the world. leos tend to be very individualistic and like to encourage others to shine as well. it's likely that you're a hype-girl type of friend, and others love being around you because of this. you're able to see the good, quirky things in others even if they can't see it themselves. you are most likely pretty quirky yourself <3

i think this placement is actually really good for chan the more i think about it. chan struggles a lot with his individuality, trying to balance it with what he thinks others want from him. leos are less likely to care about what others think. you could help him embrace his uniqueness and let him shine against what the rest of the world may think.

moon in pisces in 7th:

Quackity doesn't care about Karmaland anymore and he is also stuck under Rubius house lol

He gets a weird flashbang thrown at him and suddenly he is with Luzu in a weird room that is completly black, a voice tells them that they are in the room because they have done sins that they dont regret and the way to get out is to confess the sins

Also the room has Luckity fanart, a bed, a cake and some pole's, Q keeps blaming Luzu and talking over him

Luzu tells him he did it to protect him and only for that, he tells him about the vision from Karmaland 4, so he changed the votes and was going to tell him but Quackity started doing a bunch of things, "Everything i done have been reactions of things you done because you have lost your head, you have lost yourself".

Quackity wants to talk but Luzu needs a second, the voice tells him it sees hate in their eyes. Anyways he comes back and Q starts with rules "You were the best person I knew in Karmaland" He is grateful for Luzu's help from the beginning, he said that it was hard to get used to how everything worked, that he built a persona that people heard and even if they didn't listen at least he wouldn't be the same person from before "You took something from me and i will never forgive you for it, i dont regret it"

"What's the first thing i told you in Karmaland Quackity? Trust no one in Karmaland but me"

"I'M GRATEFUL BUT I DONT CARE"

Try to kill each other another flashbang and complete darkness and another room. They are on weird glass tubes and Sapopeta is telling them he tried to make them apologize, that it was for the good of Karmaland

"Sapopeta, let me kill Luzu and then kill me"

Quackity told Luzu he doesnt regret killing Luzu's kids or anything he did (also said he prayed for L death on the mundial) and started screaming at Sapopeta for being a hypocrite, trying to be the central axis of moral and ethics in Karmaland when he has killed millions and what gives him the right to save Karmaland

Sapopeta is going to erase both of their memories and he actually does! uh they have no memory of each other and SP lied saying there was a deadly virus that they had and that he eliminated it.

They dont know who the other is anymore.

They present themselfs to each other again (Quackity keeps calling Luzu "Vlogs") and try to piece what happened together, quickly realize they havent meet each other even though they both have been there for some time, been in the same places and have the exact same friends. Luzu tries to give the same advice from the first meeting they had but Q doesn't actually trust him, he has some weird feelings about L

They keep talking and getting confused "Is your house under the ground? I'd never seen it before" "My cousins are building the white house!... Why where they building it?". SP told them Luzu is mayor and got them ever more confused, tried to convice them they where both mayors togheter but they knew it didn't make any sense, "I dont know you it doesnt make sense, how are you going to tell me i made a mayoralty with him if i don't know who he is"

Luzu gave full power to Quackity as mayor, all the keys, coins, diamonds and osito bimbo hamburger, Q freaked out about it and L tried to reassure him saying that it probably was just the name of the brand (Sapopeta suggested biting it 💀), Quackity didn't

SP left and they went to Rubius house to ask things, on the way they kept trying to piece everything togheter but well its not really working. They got there and Rubius wasn't in his house (maybe he was but didn't hear them??), they went to the town because Q was confused about the mayor's hall he saw one of Luzu's poster and took it down, they saw the head and entered the building, got confused by the photo of Luzu and fighted to get it out. Luzu then left after exploring a bit

Quackity went back to Rubius house, asked if he knew someone by the name of Vlogs, R said no and Q warned he may be a fraud, after some talking Q asked what the town hall was and that got Rubius to explain that he almost blew it up, R told him he hated L and Q said he didnt, but that he may be a fraud, Rubius then took advantage and asked for diamonds, then stole Q's diamonds, Q refused to talk without the diamonds but then said no and asked for them, R gave him one block of diamond and said he will give everything back if Q explained what was going on, he called Luzu and R got confused, tried to take advantage again but Quackity told him he wasn't anymore because the first ladies don't steal.

Made them get inside and offered something to drink, he gave a photo of Cochi and Beni in prision making him panic a little bit. Instead of helping he said Luzu and Quackity where married and had a kid 💀 they both told him he had his brain wrong after going to the moon, Q asked where his cousins where and Rubius said that with Vegetta, they went there and got inside his house but didn't find anything, Quackity and Luzu fooled around a bit and then both left

Sooo yeah they don't remember but have suspicion about it

#i hope its not weird but it was very interesting learning about your sight#i have to wear glasses#and sometimes i see spots and stuff and its annoying#those fake fix classes bullshit are such bullshit#i remember a while ago my grandma tried explaining to me that i needed to want to be able to see properly to not need glasses#i can barely make out anything more than 3 feet away from me#thats not on purpose#my grandma literally told me to eat more carrots so i didn't have to wear glasses#i cant#ableism Not weird at all! I'm glad it was interesting to read! I always say that joke from that one old contacts commercial "I have special eyes." lol my retired optometrist lOVED when i came in because my eyes are def a unique case and he told me based on my history of prescription lenses, I can detect quarter axis changes in my astigmatism. most people dont detect it usually unless it has changed at least half, if not all the way on the axis. so the fact i notice quarter changes meant that I had to get prescriptions every 6 months, but since then it seems my eyes have slowed down and i am able to retain my glasses for a year before needing new ones. I am actually due for new glasses bc my left lens' coating got messed up so there's like, splotches on the lens but i can barely see out of that eye anyway! so it hasnt been a pressing issue. i have heard the carrot thing as well many times. And YEAH SEE like some people truly believe that you have to make the decision to see, or like your grandmother, you have to WANT to see. and they will tell you even if you say youve tried everything, these coaches will basically gaslight you into thinking you just aren't trying hard enough, even if you are trying your best.

it just isnt possible lmfao I hope one of these Dumb asses actually has a vision problem one day, i wouldn't wish blindness on anyone but when their eyes start to deteriorate due to aging and suddenly they need reading glasses, what are they going to do, say no? Say that they have the willpower to see? If so, the migraines are on their part and no one else's. God forbid one of these idiots has a kid one day who needs glasses but they refuse to get them glasses because they want to try to take some sort of holistic approach to vision??? tell their own child they just have to believe to see. And force them to go through a lifetime of never having their vision checked. What if one of these people has a totally blind kid? you gonna tell them they just need to believe to see, do you know how heart wrenching it is to think that it could be that easy LOL because my eyes have had the max amount of physical surgery on my eyes and I am still half blind. The only case I have ever heard of where someone miraculously gained sight was someone who was blind due to psychosomatic reasons, but once the trauma was dealt with, they had vision again. but even in that case, if you are psychosomatically blind or deaf (hell you can be psychosomatically diabetic) it is just as real as actually being blind or deaf and cannot be controlled. Diabetic alters will actually be diabetic and may need to take insulin to maintain the body's health when other alters do not have the diabetes.

(the truth is in that case, the body is diabetic but it is psychosomatically sectioned to one alter who has to take care of it.) It only goes away if it is being caused by a particular part, or parts who work their stuff out and stop sending out psychosomatic stressors. Even then, it may not improve. Belief and willpower have absolutely NOTHING to do with the eyes and i wish these people to step off of a cliff. ... into something soft but like still.

There's a lot of people who probably shouldn't be parents.

sorry (not sorry) long ass astral guard post again, have it on my mind constantly :P

going through the folders for table talk and found these axis sprites >:)

think i remember seeing these in the famous rpgmaker 2k3 sale video but also thinking about how this might’ve been a big influence on how i draw Axis’s hair now. Always liked how it goes up to one side (cowlick?) but actually used his updated face sprites when working on that weezer parody

think i peaked on his hair with this one

idk if the cowlick is technically a canon design anymore though?

still dig his hair even if not but noticed its not as prominent in the table talk title screen/promo and some more recent axis art

think for the longest time i’ve always been drawing his hearing aids with the antenna thingy at an angle which might’ve been based on older teasers though i think its straight now

I think i also tend to draw Axis a bit chubbier now too?, and i think that might’ve been party inspired by his proportions in the 2021 teaser? Think Axis is more twinkish in actuality but idk i think a little chub suits him 😆

I really love referencing old art particularly when drawing astral guard stuff sometimes, like in the piece with Sear and Coda, Axis in the background has a headset inspired by an old rpgmakercola piece with axis in it (unfortunately cant find it right now)

and on a non axis related note, referenced sears old poncho design when doing that steel ball run parody

(the steel ball run volume cover parody is still probably my favorite astral guard fanart i’ve done so far)

Also I haven’t the faintest idea where i got it from??? I dont remember ever seeing earrings on Voleric but in that second ever astral guard fanart I did i gave him earrings for some reason??? Not a bad look i must admit but I cant remember if that was a creative choice on my part or not.

Always been obsessed with concept art and seeing the old designs for these characters and how they’ve changed over the course of its development is just so fascinating to me.

And also seeing how much punkitts artstyle has changed over the course of its development??? Its so inspirational seeing how much it has, i’ve loved their artstyle since i first saw astral guard but like just LOOK at this early piece of Axis compared to something more recent

He said all this without turning around to face him and when he did he wore exhaustion and hysteria with a sharp toothed leer.

“ I am not garbage you thought you threw away square one, Sanae. Im not gonna be his next pet either in your hyperbolic xy sub axis daydream. ”

“ Im gonna square away that promise I made when I was anointed. ”

She said it.

He's saying it.

He’ll earn that same stupid adoration he gives Joshua even if it means ripping it out of his chest between his lion’s maw.
