Dracula finding a new home on Tumblr is both ironic and beautiful cause for like a solid century no one has given Jonathan Harker a fair shake. He’s the stuffy 1800s misogynist who hates Mina’s independence, the weak-willed coward who faints over vampires, the “boring one” compared to Van Helsing or Lucy or Arthur. He’s overacted and underplayed, so disdained that despite being one of the novel’s main heroes some adaptations cut him out completely cause they can’t find anything compelling about him. And yet somehow we are in the right time and the right place to look at this heavily traumatized guy, and say “No, you are not a coward and you are not weak, you were stuck in a living hell for months on end and you held on and got away.”

Me, before finishing Renegades Trilogy: Oh okay! This series shows complexities on both sides but over all it echos anti police brutality shown in the "heroes"
Me, after basically reading "the anarchists were completely in the wrong and being a renegade was the 100% path the whole time": I'm sorry w h a t

Every time Draco called Hermione "Mudblood" when speaking to her
So I wanted to compile here all the times Draco calls Hermione a "mudblood" as a follow-up to this post.
Not referring to her in third person as one but actually using it while speaking to her individually. And how Hermione responded. This is mainly for my own fun.
I did this examination by searching for "mudblood" in all the pdf files of the books.
Philospher's/Sorcerer's Stone
Chamber of Secrets
Chapter 7 - MUDBLOODS AND MURMURS
“At least no one on the Gryffindor team had to buy their way in,” said Hermione sharply. “They got in on pure talent.” The smug look on Malfoy’s face flickered. “No one asked your opinion, you filthy little Mudblood,” he spat.
Note: He only acknowledged Hermione's presence on the field when she insulted him.
“He did,” she said. “But I don’t know what it means. I could tell it was really rude, of course —”
Note: It's weird how no focus is put on Hermione during this debacle. All of the focus is on Ron's rage. Even after Hermione learns what the slur means, there is no description of a reaction even several paragraphs later. This is the most I see of a reaction which is kind of nice but disappointing at the same time if JKR truly wants me to feel the plight of mugglebornes in her story.
Prisoner of Azkaban
Goblet of Fire
Chapter 18 - THE WEIGHING OF THE WANDS
“Want one, Granger?” said Malfoy, holding out a badge to Hermione. “I’ve got loads. But don’t touch my hand, now. I’ve just washed it, you see; don’t want a Mudblood sliming it up.”
Note: Draco was harassing Harry. Hermione entered the exchange by snarking at Pansy and her female gang. Then, in a continuation of humiliating Harry, Draco engages her.
“Harry!” Hermione said warningly.
Note: Once again, no reaction from Hermione. Here, she tries to prevent Harry from escalating by attacking Draco. And once again the reactive party is someone else - this time Harry, a guy. Yay, feminism!
Order of the Phoenix
Chapter 28 - SNAPE’S WORST MEMORY
“The Inquisitorial Squad, Granger,” said Malfoy, pointing toward a tiny silver I upon his robes just beneath his prefect’s badge. “A select group of students who are supportive of the Ministry of Magic, handpicked by Professor Umbridge. Anyway, members of the Inquisitorial Squad do have the power to dock points. . . . So, Granger, I’ll have five from you for being rude about our new headmistress. . . . Macmillan, five for contradicting me. . . . Five because I don’t like you, Potter . . . Weasley, your shirt’s untucked, so I’ll have another five for that. . . . Oh yeah, I forgot, you’re a Mudblood, Granger, so ten for that. . . .”
Ron pulled out his wand, but Hermione pushed it away, whispering, “Don’t!”
Note: Same note as above. But this time it's Ron instead of Harry.
Fun fact: Most of the mudblood usage comes from Kreacher in this book.
Half-Blood Prince
Deathly Hallows
Final Count! In direct conversation with Hermione, Draco called her a mudblood...3 times...over 7 years? Is that it?? Gasp! I thought Draco was such a big bad meanie to poor defenceless queen Hermione 😭. She's oh so hurt and traumatized!
Tumblr media
All jokes aside, I do admire Hermione's almost utter lack of regard for Draco's taunts. She does not walk around acting like a victim so her fans need to do the same. And as for the Draco antis, there's no need to overblow Draco's bullying to make your point. When you look at it, Draco was not that great of a bully. He's honestly mostly bark and his bite always seems to backfire on him in the end instead of his intended victims.

wait im sorry. ive never read past the first book of dotc and all my knowledge of it really just comes from your blogs. wh. why did the erins decide to include sexual violence in warriors? like. that seems a little. too much? like all im hearing of dotc is just. terrible shit. i like reading more angst/serious stuff (i wanna say darker but not in the way "dark media" usually means on this site) but this feels like WAYYY to much for a book series meant for kids....... what were they thinking??
I legitimately do not understand what people like about DOTC. You can go back to where I started this re-read, and you can visibly watch my charitability drain as the project goes on.
It feels like literally everything that people say they like about this arc is not there, while they've completely forgotten or misremembered SERIOUSLY awful shit
And now, listen. I'm a huge fan of xenofiction, which is a genre that is full of kid's and teen's media, but I do love more adult fiction. I love nuanced themes, dark subjects, and complicated plots.
DOTC's message is just plain odious. None of what it sets out to say is worth saying, and it's borderline incompetent at even saying it to begin with.
What they want to say with Clear Sky and Slash is that Clear Sky isn't "evil." He's a "fundamentally good person," and all of his intentions were good, so he learned a valuable lesson from all the abuse and murder. To say this, they CONTRAST him to Slash, a REAL evil person, who just loves hurting kids and harassing women. Clear Sky is good because he is not "real evil" like this fake, cartoon caricature we just made up.
There was absolutely zero need for them to write Slash the way they did. They really want you to be distressed for Clear Sky as his wife is assaulted in front of him and hauled off while kicking and screaming, and they decided the best way to do that was pregnant woman pinning face licking. Sexual violence is an easy way to disgust and anger an audience, simple as that.
As a kid you may not realize how messed up it is (though the asks I get on this blog are a testament to how many kids did, but didn't have the words to express their discomfort) but as an adult with your critical thinking on? It hits different.

I think it's interesting that in Lebanon when John tells Sam that he's really sorry and that he knows he screwed up a lot with him, this is the John who is still estranged from Sam at Stanford, like even at that time John knew that he messed up but he never had the courage to reach out to Stanford Sam and say he's sorry :((( and/or he saw late seasons Sam's sad droopy browbeaten vibes and thought 'dang I messed this kid up...'

and rereading windwitch and getting vivia's point of view and how she interacts with serafin, it's just. shit. this is such a well-written depiction of emotional abuse. vivia is desperate for her father's love and approval, and he seems to give it to her -- and then wrench it from her in turn. and she's left to make up excuses as to why, to fill in the gaps with what she must have done or said wrong. she knows he means best for her, he must mean best for her, surely he loves her and favors her, surely if she can be just like him then she can keep his favor and never disappoint him again, never lose his fickle favor again -- surely if he's angry at her it's because she failed him, that she wasn't good enough, she must have made some kind of mistake.
serafin never raises a hand to vivia. he never has to.

I think it's interesting how he yu seems completely bereft of empathy for the people around him, even and especially xie xue who he supposedly has a crush on however we see such an intense outpour from him for the people at the mental health institute to the point that he risks his life and even exposes his ability he needed to hide to save these people deemed too difficult to save.
It makes me wonder if there's more to his statement of having been 'born this way'- perhaps he was born with this psychological ebola (insane phrase, insane fictional mental illness with special abilities) similar to a form of neurodivergency but it makes me wonder what was done to him, what happened to him that the only people he can feel empathy for are other victims of mental health care?
At this point it could certainly be that he just faced the extreme humiliation of mental health treatment already described in the book so far (tied up, made to look like a madman), but..

Armand in the latter third of the vampire armand is so fucking interesting. He was like, lestat is my brambling, laughing friend. He's like a brother to me. He's deeply and excruciatingly annoying. If anybody disrespects lestat's personhood, im about to start mauling. i will tear a bitch apart for Lestat. i will lie my own life down for him. Armand drank from lestat and saw a vision of Christ and later said that Christ was like a brother to him, that Christ was a human man just as he Armand is a human man. He said Christ's an extension of his own self, a mirror holding up to his own face, and it just sounds like Armand was really talking about lestat. Lestat is the focal point through which Armand learns, unsteadily and messily, to finally become a person himself. Armand's love for lestat feels like self-love. This demonic messed-up kid, he's healing through lestat, and I'm so obsessed with this fucking shit.

A friend and I were discussing going to see the new Renfield movie when it comes out, and it got me to thinking…gosh book!Renfield deserved so much better. His character is steeped in layer upon layer of Victorian ableism, so it’s a bit difficult to understand exactly what’s going on with him, but once you peel it back, his story is so tragic. He was clearly a man of good social standing considering he knew Arthur Holmwood’s father prior to being institutionalized, but Seward just treats him like a particularly interesting science experiment, and intentionally feeds into and encourages Renfield’s psychotic episodes just to observe the results. Then when Mina is kind to him, Renfield breaks free of Dracula’s hold over him and ultimately dies to protect Mina. He was abandoned and mistreated by the very people that should have helped him, broke free of Dracula’s control due to a single measure of kindness, and died to save the one character who treated him like a person. He deserved a kinder story.

hate it when people feel the need to make every single book or movie or whatever they read into a fandom reaction even when its completely and utterly unwarranted. “omg jennette mccurdy was sooo totally an aries girlboss queen when she ignored her dying mom’s nurse begging her for a picture-” im bludgeoning you with a rock

does mickey have… children? from what i can tell it seems he does not. but either way what are his thoughts on all that. being a father, kids in general, etc.
He does not have any (not even in the book!). Mickey is not great with kids. He has no desire to have any, but he figures it's probably inevitable he might someday. However, he's also oddly protective towards children who have abusive parents. He, himself, is abused by his father, who he loves and hates in equal measure, but he doesn't want to become him. There's a whole scene where he beats the shit out of a total stranger he comes across hurting a child. Mistreating children is one of the few lines Mickey won't cross and he has no tolerance for it.
That being said, Mickey is not really good with children. He's not bad, but he's not good. He has no idea how to be gentle around them and babies are a whole other species to him 😂 He'd rather not deal with them, if he can help it
