The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant was one of the largest in the Soviet Union and the poster child of the Soviet nuclear power industry. As such, little expense was spared on details like these windows.

The Soviet Union often used motifs in abstract art to promote Communism and laude their successes.

In the early evening of December 4th, 1951, 52 Royal Marine cadets, aged between nine and 13, were being marched the short distance from their own barracks to the Chatham Naval Barracks, via Dock Road, to watch a boxing match. They were marching three abreast, actually on the roadway owing to the narrowness of the footpath which abutted a high wall, and with the traffic. They had no torches or safety lighting, other than what was provided by the overhead streetlamps. The cadets were under the supervision of a regular Royal Marines Officer, Lieutenant Clarence Carter.

Just before six pm, in conditions of poor visibility worsened by fog and defective streetlighting, a double decker bus operated by the Chatham and District Traction Company hit the marching column from behind. Twenty four cadets were killed and a further 18 were injured, at that point the highest loss of life in a road traffic accident in the UK.

The bus was being driven by an experienced and highly regarded driver, 57 year old John Samson, who had worked for the company for 40 years and was about to be officially commended for his safety record, long service and good conduct. He stated that he did not see the cadets ahead of him prior to the collision. He was driving using sidelights only, despite the poor visibility, which was common practice at the time. Estimations of the speed of the bus by witnesses varied between 20 and 40 mph. There was no mention of any passengers aboard, it appears that the bus was returning to depot.

There was some thinking at the time that using sidelights only under street lighting reduced dangerous glare for other traffic. It was also to save power, as batteries under load could drain even when mobile.

Accounts of the accident and immediate aftermath are, not surprisingly, horrific. The conductor, Dorothy Dunster, initially thought the bus had run over a pile of ‘loose rocks’. The dead and injured were, according to witnesses, 'spread out from one side of the road to the other'. Several cadets were trapped beneath the bus and died before they could be rescued. Lieutenant Carter, who had attempted to marshal the cadets toward the side of the road upon hearing the bus approaching, was struck and injured, although it would appear not seriously. A number of cadets died in the arms of three Royal Navy sailors who had rushed to the scene having heard the cries and screams of the injured cadets.

Mr Samson was present for the Coroner’s inquest which was held at the Royal Naval Hospital, Chatham, during which parents had to sign off on the identification of their deceased sons, but he collapsed after the final identification was complete. The Coroner recorded verdicts of Accident Death, however Samson was charged with dangerous driving, fined 20 pounds at the Old Bailey, and was disqualified from driving for three years.

There was considerable sympathy for Mr Samson at the time and for many years afterwards. The jury, upon finding him guilty, urged the judge to show as much leniency as possible. The judge noted that no amount of punishment could be worse than Samson's own utter devastation at what had happened.

A number of injured cadets, recovering in hospital, organised a whip-round to buy Samson some chocolates to cheer him up. He continued to live locally, never spoke publicly, and was shielded by friends and neighbours whenever media interest in the crash rekindled from time to time.

According to the website of Historic Medway;

"...A huge amount of money was collected by public appeals after the crash. Some was spent on memorials for the boys who died, and some was spent on the boys who were disabled. The mayors, who were looking after the money, could not agree what to do with the rest and, after a court case, it was decreed that as it could not be returned to the donors (a lot of it was collected on the streets) it had to be kept in an account. It wasn't until the 1990s that some of the money was spent restoring the cadets' graves..."

3 years after the Titanic, another ship, the SS Eastland, sank killing even more people, most were young women and children. Where did it sink? The Chicago river. While still tied to the dock. Why have you never heard of this? That's a good question.

The video above was made by Caitlin Doughty and her team on the Ask a Mortician YouTube channel along with bunches of experts, historians, etc., and shows both how and why the ship sank, who the victims were, and why both they and the entire incident has been almost completely forgotten by history.

Spoiler Alert: It's because the victims were poor, working class families. As apposed to the rich and famous victims of the smaller tragedy of the Titanic.

And I do mean families. It was a company outing. Entire families died while sitting feet away from dry land.

I had never heard this story before, and I'm glad I was able to learn about both it, and the efforts people in the Chicago area are taking to get it back into the history books. BUT…

For some reason, this over 40 minute long historical documentary, got a strike from YouTube against its community standards and is no longer being suggested to anyone on the platform. Because it's not educational???

Caitlin Doughty and her team are a fantastic resource for all things related to the death industry (funerals, mortuary, bodies, and the like) and have been in the business of educating people on YT for over 10 years. Now after putting out one of the most complete looks at a tragedy that has been mostly forgotten, in a video that handles the issues with both in-depth research and full respect for the victims and their living descendants, YT has decided it's not up to "their standards". (As you can see from the preview above). :/

Not only is that a slap in the face to this team of people that worked for months to do this forgotten piece of history and it's forgotten victims justice, it also takes away the ability for others to learn about it and help keep the memories of those lost alive.

You can learn more about YT's decision in the video below. And if you've not heard of this disaster before you need to see the video on the Eastland. It's an impressive piece of media, and an incredibly sad story. But one that despite YT's feelings, deserves to be told.

Peristiwa memilukan kembali terjadi di tanah air. Pertandingan sepak bola Derby Jatim yang mempertemukan tim Arema dengan Persebaya Surabaya harus berakhir tragis. Diperkirakan ada 131 orang yang meninggal dunia dalam insiden di Stadion Kanjuruhan, Malang pada hari Sabtu tanggal 1 Oktober 2022. Diduga banyaknya korban jiwa dalam peristiwa ini disebabkan oleh kepanikan dan aksi saling berdesakan setelah petugas keamanan menembakkan gas air mata untuk menghalau kericuhan yang terjadi di dalam stadion. Sontak, peristiwa ini menjadi perhatian banyak pihak dan menjadi sorotan media. Aksi solidaritas serta ucapan bela sungkawa hadir dari segala penjuru dunia. Presiden FIFA, Gianni Infantino, menyebut peristiwa itu sebagai sebuah hari yang kelam bagi sepak bola dunia.

Hal yang paling memilukan dari peristiwa ini adalah adanya korban dari anak - anak dan perempuan. Sungguh betapa sakitnya hati ini melihat mereka yang tidak bersalah harus menjadi korban dari peristiwa ini. Menonton sepak bola yang seharusnya seru dan menyenangkan, berubah menjadi tragedi yang merenggut banyak nyawa. Banyak orang tua yang larut dalam kesedihan karena ditinggal pergi selama - lamanya oleh anak nya begitu pula ada anak yang harus kehilangan kedua orang tuanya di usia yang masih belia. Tak terbayangkan bagaimana kalutnya perasaan mereka yang ditinggalkan melihat orang yang dicintai pamit untuk pergi menonton pertandingan sepak bola kemudian pulang hanya tinggal nama. Dan bayangkan juga, ada sekelompok supporter yang pergi ke stadion dan mungkin sempat bergurau bersama kemudian saat kekacauan itu terjadi, mereka menyaksikan sendiri kepergian sahabatnya ke pangkuan Ilahi.

Desakan untuk mengusut tuntas tragedi ini datang dari banyak pihak. Presiden Joko Widodo juga menginstruksikan agar tragedi ini harus diinvestigasi dan diusut tuntas. Menyambut instruksi presiden, Menkopolhukam, Mahfud M.D., kemudian membentuk Tim Gabungan Independen Pencari Fakta (TGIPF) yang terdiri dari kalangan akademisi, praktisi dan jurnalis. Diharapkan tim ini mampu bekerja secara cepat untuk menginvestigasi kasus ini. Selain dari pihak pemerintah, beberapa media ternama juga membentuk tim investigasi sendiri. Mereka berupaya untuk mengumpulkan bukti berupa dokumentasi dari para saksi yang ada saat tragedi itu terjadi. Hasil investigasi ini diperlukan untuk menilai siapa yang bertanggung jawab atas tragedi ini dan bila perlu sanksi apa yang akan diberikan kepada pihak yang bertanggung jawab itu. Selain itu, hasil tim investigasi ini diperlukan sebagai rekomendasi perbaikan bagi penyelenggaran kompetisi sepak bola nasional selanjutnya.

Jika bisa dirangkum dalam sebuah kalimat, tragedi ini disebabkan oleh bobroknya sistem penyelenggaraan dan pengamanan dalam pertandingan sepak bola di negeri ini. Sebelum saya coba ungkap pihak mana saja yang harusnya bertanggung jawab dalam tragedi ini, mari kita urai dulu kronologi kejadiannya. Dalam beberapa rekaman video yang beredar, masalah mulai muncul ketika ada beberapa penonton yang masuk ke dalam lapangan setelah pertandingan yang mana tim Arema dikalahkan oleh Persebaya. Entah apa motivasinya, ingin melampiaskan amarah atau sekedar memberi motivasi kepada pemain Arema, kehadiran penonton di lapangan memicu reaksi dari petugas pengamanan untuk mengusir mereka dari lapangan. Semakin lama, jumlah penonton yang turun ke lapangan semakin banyak. Situasi mulai kacau. Banyak aparat keamanan yang lari mengejar para penonton ini dan kemudian ada yang menendang serta memukuli penonton. Dirasa situasi sudah tidak terkendali lagi dan entah siapa yang memberikan komando, gas air mata ditembakkan oleh polisi ke hampir seluruh penjuru tribun di Stadion Kanjuruhan. Kekacauan dan kepanikan tidak dapat dihindarkan. Banyak penonton yang berusaha untuk lari keluar dari stadion untuk menghindari asap gas air mata tetapi pintu keluar terkunci. Terjadi penumpukan manusia di sekitar pintu keluar. Dan di sana lah banyak korban berjatuhan yang disebabkan oleh aksi berdesakan dan kehabisan nafas. Kekacauan juga terjadi di luar stadion di mana ada mobil milik aparat keamanan yang dibakar dan aksi pelemparan terhadap kendaraan yang ditumpangi oleh tim Persebaya.

Bila dilihat dari kronologi kejadian dan beberapa peristiwa sebelum tragedi ini, ada banyak pihak yang harusnya bertanggung jawab. Pertama dari pihak supporter. Apapun alasannya, masuk ke dalam lapangan adalah hal yang illegal. Hal seperti ini yang kemudian bisa memicu reaksi dari petugas pengamanan dan membuat situasi menjadi buruk. Kedewasaan dalam menyikapi hasil pertandingan adalah kewajiban bagi setiap suporter. Atau jika alasannya hanya ingin memberikan motivasi dan semangat kepada pemain bukan juga dengan masuk ke lapangan, tetapi disampaikan pada kesempatan di tempat yang lain dan klub seharusnya memfasilitasi itu. Kedua dari petugas keamanan. Petugas keamanan yang bertugas untuk mengamankan pertandingan sepak bola harus berkoordinasi dengan panitia pelaksana (panpel) pertandingan tentang prosedur dalam pengamanan pertandingan sepak bola. Dalam tragedi ini, beredar kabar tidak sinkronnya prosedur petugas keamanan yaitu polisi dengan regulasi dari FIFA. FIFA melarang penggunaan gas air mata dalam rangka pengamanan sepak bola sementara prosedur kepolisian memerlukan penggunaan gas air mata untuk menertibkan kericuhan. Kemudian yang menjadi sorotan adalah adanya sikap "overreacting" dari kepolisian dalam menertibkan massa. Entah seberapa besar ancaman yang dihadapi oleh polisi saat itu tetapi tembakan gas air mata ke arah tribun penonton adalah hal yang disesalkan karena itu membuat situasi menjadi kacau dan runyam. Yang menjadi catatan saya, beberapa pekan sebelum tragedi ini, sempat juga terjadi kekacauan di Stadion Gelora Delta, Sidoarjo yang disebabkan oleh Bonek, pendukung Persebaya karena kekalahan timnya. Namun, kekacauan ini tidak sampai menimbulkan korban jiwa dan hanya menghasilkan kerusakan materiil. Terlepas dari skala insiden, kenapa bisa ada cara penanganan yang berbeda ? Apakah ada perbedaan prosedur dalam kepolisian di tempat yang berbeda ? Jadi sudah seharusnya prosedur pengamanan massa yang tidak menimbulkan korban jiwa harus menjadi prioritas dalam kegiatan pengamanan pertandingan sepak bola. Ketiga adalah Panitia Pelaksana (Panpel). Ada desas - desus yang mengatakan panpel mencetak tiket melebihi kapasitas stadion. Hal ini sangat ceroboh dan membahayakan. Bila terbukti benar, sudah seharusnya panpel ini dijerat dengan hukum pidana karena abai dengan keselamatan manusia. Keempat adalah operator liga dan broadcaster (penyiar). Jadwal kick off yang terlalu malam serta adanya rumor bahwa broadcaster tidak ingin untuk memindah jadwal ke sore hari walaupun sudah ada permintaan dari kepolisian juga merupakan salah satu faktor yang memperburuk tragedi ini. Walaupun faktanya, insiden sepak bola yang terjadi di tanah air juga pernah terjadi di sore hari, tetapi menyelenggarakan pertandingan terlalu malam juga tidak ideal ditinjau dari sisi kenyamanan dan keamanan suporter serta medis. Jika ada hal buruk yang terjadi, penanganan akan lebih mudah dilakukan saat hari masih terang. Dan muara dari semua pihak yang bertanggung jawab dalam tragedi ini adalah PSSI. Sebagai otoritas tertinggi sepak bola di tanah air, mereka belum, atau bahkan bisa disebut gagal, dalam menciptakan sistem tata kelola penyelenggaraan pertandingan sepak bola yang baik dan aman. PSSI sepertinya tidak mengambil pelajaran dari tragedi sepak bola yang pernah ada serta tidak mengindahkan dan mempertimbangkan masukan dari pihak luar untuk perbaikan tata kelola penyelenggaraan kompetisi sepak bola di Indonesia. Segala bentuk pertanggung jawaban harus ditunjukkan segenap jajaran pengurus PSSI dalam tragedi ini karena dari berita yang selama ini beredar, kebanyakan dari mereka lepas dari tanggung jawab dan malah menyalahkan pihak lain.

Perubahan dan perbaikan adalah hal yang wajib dilakukan setelah tragedi ini. Perubahan harus dilakukan oleh setiap pihak yang terlibat dalam sepak bola di negeri ini. Apresiasi harus diberikan kepada beberapa kelompok suporter yang mengakhiri rivalitas tidak sehat diantara mereka. Mereka akhirnya sadar bahwa rivalitas yang dibumbui anarkisme dan kebencian hanya akan membawa derita. Kemudian PSSI harus introspeksi dan mengevaluasi diri terlebih dahulu. Ini membutuhkan komitmen yang besar dan desakan harus digaungkan oleh banyak pihak. Setelah itu, PSSI harus merubah dan merombak sistem tata kelola penyelenggaraan pertandingan sepak bola secara menyeluruh yang lebih aman. Kompetisi yang sedang berjalan seharusnya dihentikan terlebih dahulu atau dilaksanakan secara terbatas tanpa penonton sampai perubahan sistem itu dilaksanakan. Sangat disayangkan perubahan itu hadir harus menunggu jatuhya korban terlebih dahulu. Berkaca dari tragedi Hillsborough, penyelenggaraan sepak bola di Inggris kemudian menjadi lebih baik dan aman setelah tragedi itu terjadi. Indonesia juga harus begitu. Duka di Kanjuruhan harus dijadikan pembelajaran agar kejadian serupa tak terulang lagi di masa mendatang. Duka di Kanjuruhan juga menumbuhkan rasa empati dan menggugah kemanusiaan kita karena duka di Kanjuruhan adalah duka kita semua.
