#AbuseCrisis
Text
Once you learn that a lot of Catholic priests who are abusers were once groomed, assaulted or otherwise abused themselves while in seminary or in the first few years of their vocation as a priest, the institutionalized abuse within the Catholic Church suddenly starts making a lot more sense. It most certainly doesn’t excuse it, but it provides some sense of clarity into where the problem is coming from or at least where one of the sources of the problem lies.

So apparently Richard Sipe is a former Catholic priest and psychotherapist who became a well known activist who dedicated his life to fighting for sexual abuse survivors within the Church and advocated for change and I have never heard of him until now????? He wrote several books on the subject of the abuse crisis and celibacy and has a documentary about his work????? He was mentioned in the movie Spotlight too???? I gotta track down his books and read them for myself AND watch whatever films or documentaries he was in, I would be very interested to hear what this man had to say and knew. Maybe I'll post a little book review whenever I get around to reading his books.

The mental gymnastics that all too many Catholics will go through to justify or excuse the sex abuse crisis in their Church is mind boggling and revolting all at once. I would be able to laugh off their ignorance and apathy if real human beings weren’t being tortured and silenced. But no. Lives have been ruined or lost because of this crisis and there’s not nearly enough outrage or active change coming from Catholics in response. So no, excuse me if I don’t buy your bullshit excuses for your Church’s crimes. It’s not “a small handful of priests” nor it is the secular world trying to infiltrate or destroy your Church and its clergy, it’s the Church itself that is the problem.
